U.S. To Boost Climate Financing To Assist Developing Countries With Climate Change By 2024

U.S. To Boost Climate Financing To Assist Developing Countries With Climate Change By 2024

Reuters -The United States said Thursday it would boost public climate finance to help poor countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change, doubling funding by 2024 from high average levels hit during the Obama administration.

The White House said it was embracing “ambitious but attainable goals” for international aid to developing countries, given the urgency of climate change and to compensate for a sharp drop in U.S. funding during the Trump administration.

The White House said that by 2024 it would triple financing of climate adaptation, which focuses on adjustments to current or expected climate change. It said it would work with Congress to enact needed legislation.

The Biden administration released its climate finance plan in tandem with a new goal to cut emissions by 50%-52% from 2005 levels.

Leonardo Martinez-Diaz, a top aide to Biden’s climate envoy John Kerry, said total U.S. international public climate finance averaged around $2.8 billion a year during the baseline period from fiscal 2013-2017, with around $500 million going toward adaptation. That was the most recent period when U.S. climate finance was at an all-time high, he said on Twitter.

A handful of nongovernmental organizations said on Thursday the United States, the world’s second climate emitter after China, would have to contribute $800 billion in international climate finance through 2030 for its “fair share.”

“The United States has an obligation to provide finance and other forms of support to enable emissions cuts in poorer countries, and to ensure that frontline communities in those countries can survive the climate impacts that are already happening,” said Niranjali Amerasinghe, executive director of ActionAid USA.

In a fact sheet on the climate finance plan, the White House said U.S. agencies, working with development partners, would prioritize climate in their investments, expand technical assistance and increase funding for adaptation and resilience.

It said the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) would release a new Climate Change Strategy in November 2021, at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26).

USAID said it would leverage $250 million in federal funding to attract $3.5 billion in private sector financing for climate-related work over the next three years, and aimed to sharply scale up climate finance programs in 20 fast-growing economies.

The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) would change its development strategy to include climate change for the first time, and prioritize climate mitigation and adaptation.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation’s new climate strategy would focus on climate-smart development and sustainable infrastructure, aiming to put more than 50% of its funding into climate-related investments over the next five years, it said.

The U.S. Treasury, which this week named a climate czar, would direct U.S. executive directors in multilateral development banks such as the World Bank to ensure they set and applied ambitious climate finance targets and policies.

The plan also calls for ending international investments in carbon-intensive fossil fuel-based energy projects, and steering capital toward climate-aligned investments, a goal long sought by environmental groups.

Treasury, together with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, will spearhead efforts to modify guidelines for official export financing to reorient financing away from carbon-intensive activities, it said.

Ben Carson Says Calling for Racial Equity Is ‘Another Kind of Racism’

Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Ben Carson, recently wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post, while exploring his view that “moving our focus from equality to equity won’t defeat racism.” Carson stated that it is another kind of racism. In his piece, Carson remarked that ‘proponents of equity see no problem with treating groups of people differently based solely on race, as long as it serves their agenda.’

“This is what we used to call racism, and those not blinded by identity politics still recognize it as such,” Carson added.

He also discussed his thoughts about the op-ed on Fox News.

“Do we need some reforms? Absolutely. There are things that can be done, and we can do those much better if we work together rather than trying to demonize the system based on occurrences that are quite infrequent. And there are things that the police could use, for instance, that are non-lethal, that are very effective in immobilizing people. We need to move forward on those kinds of things,” Carson said on the show.

Carson added that paying less attention to external characteristics is needed.

In another Fox interview, Carson commented that he was not saying there is not a racial problem. However, it has gotten better in his lifetime, and we have to keep working on it. He remarked that racism has existed and does exist,  but it does not have to be a central focus of everything that we do.

Carson is also the founder of the American Cornerstone Institute (ACI). On its website, it partially explains that it “is dedicated to promoting and preserving individual and religious liberty, helping our country’s most vulnerable find new hope, and developing methods to decrease the federal government’s role in society and to improve efficiency to best serve ALL our nation’s citizens.”

Dallas-Based Headwrap Company Raises $2 Million in Seed Funding Round

According to Dallas Innovates, You Go Natural (YGN) announced the close of a $2 million seed funding round led by Brand Foundry Venture Partners. Other participants who are assisting the Black-owned hair company include Capital Factory, Willow Growth Partners, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Monique Little founded YGN in 2016. Her beauty brand is currently based in Dallas.

Dallas Innovates also said that YGN was created when Little realized that she needed a method of protecting her hair, while looking good on the go, after giving birth. In response, Little opted to create a pre-tied and satin-lined headwrap, using her sewing machine. A demand for headwraps from her Instagram followers led to making and selling her creations online.

“You Go Natural was born out of the idea that it should not be difficult to wear your hair as it naturally grows out of your head,” Little told Dallas Innovates. “It’s an affirmation for women who dare to love themselves naturally.”

YGN has blossomed into a multimillion-dollar generating company. T-shirts turbans, headbands, open crown wraps, T-shirt buns, and T-shirt turbans are sold online, according to Dallas Innovates.

On YGN’s website, Little mentioned that she designed YGN Headwraps with functionality and beauty in mind.

“As a Black woman with naturally textured hair, I enjoy the beauty of headwraps and how they allow us to connect with our cultural roots. I also love how they allow us to protect and cover our hair when needed,” Little said.

YGN reportedly informed AfroTech that funds will be used to expand YGN’s Dallas-based production facility from 1,500 to 7,500 square feet. Staff will increase to more than 100 employees. AfroTech also said that YGN intends to explore retail options. Little added that an ambitious product roadmap is expected to be rolled out over the next year or so.

Lizzo Partners With The Dove Self-Esteem Project to Combat ‘Digital Distortion’ on Social Media

Body positive activist Lizzo has teamed up with Dove’s Self-Esteem Project to help combat a growing wave of “digital distortion” on social media that often pressures young girls into portraying flawless appearances.

The use of filters, photoshop, and video altering features allow many celebrities and influencers to fabricate their looks on social media. “Truth Hurts” singer Lizzo has worked to advocate against this growing phenomenon by frequently sharing an unedited image of herself online. Now the Grammy Award-winning singer has partnered with Dove’s Self-Esteem Project to help young girls instill more self-confidence in their natural appearance, Madame Noire reports.

“The scary thing about it is when I was their age — the girls now who are like 12, 13 — I felt the same way, Lizzo said during the Dove Global Summit on Wednesday. “I remember waking up and wanting to be someone else, change my body, changed my eye color, my hair texture, the shape of my body, the color of my skin. But I didn’t have photo retouching, I didn’t have filters or anything like that. So that feeling was already there, and it scares me to think that now there is a tool that actually cashes in on that insecurity.”

Research for Dove’s 2020 Self-Esteem Project found that “80% of girls have already applied a filter or used an app to change the way they look in their photos by the time they are 13.” Additionally, “77% of girls try to change or hide at least one body part/feature before posting a photo of themselves on social media.” As a result, a growing number of girls have developed low self-esteem at earlier ages.

Lizzo shared her decision to develop more pride and confidence in her physical appearance. “It was no choice for me. It was literal survival,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘If I’m going to continue to live in this body and survive in this body and be happy and actually enjoy life, I need to find a way to like myself.’”

As part of the Self-Esteem Project, Dove created a Confidence Tool Kit that includes a collection of articles and activities to help young people combat societal pressures.

Meet Oakland Technical High School’s First Black Male Valedictorian

Ahmed Muhammad will become Oakland Technical High School’s first Black male valedictorian. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Muhammad has also been accepted to 11 universities. Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, and Columbia are some of the 18-year-old’s top choices. Selecting one of them would allow the scholar to capitalize on his interest in math and science since he could major in engineering.

“It’s an awesome feeling to know that all the hard work I put in and all the support and love I received paid off,” Muhammad told the San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s pretty cool I was named valedictorian.”

KTVU mentioned that Muhammed will be recognized for having the highest academic rank in his class. The scholar will complete his four years of high school studies with a cumulative 4.73-grade point average. KTVU also said that after applying to 11 universities, Muhammad was accepted into each one.

“It feels amazing. I’m grateful to be accepted to any single college, but 11 of them?” Muhammad said in a KTVU interview.

Muhammad also seeks to inspire the next generation of science enthusiasts to pursue knowledge. The news station also said that Muhammed is most proud of making an impact on youth. The innovator founded a science education company Kits Cubed. KTVU explained he started it last year, shortly after the pandemic began.

According to the website, Kits Cube’s mission is to introduce youth to the wonders of science through fun, affordable, and accessible means. It is also stated that every science kit purchased online enables more kits to be provided for low-income students and communities. In conjunction, CNN reported that Muhammad’s most important goal with Kits Cubed is to teach kids that science is always within their reach. Muhammed informed CNN that Kits Cubed has reached over 2,000 young people in Oakland alone.

Latest Batch Of $1400 Stimulus Checks Includes More Payments For Those Who Filed Their Taxes

Latest Batch Of $1400 Stimulus Checks Includes More Payments For Those Who Filed Their Taxes

A sixth batch of $1,400 coronavirus stimulus checks have been sent out and includes people the IRS previously have on record.

More than $1.3 billion in checks were processed in this round after the IRS processed their 2020 tax returns. More than $300 billion has been sent to Americans via direct payments since March and the latest set of stimulus checks are worth $3.4 billion. More than 1 million payments were made by paper check while about 900,000 were directly deposited in bank accounts.

CNBC reports a recovery rebate credit has been added to this year’s tax form so people who did not get their previous stimulus checks can get them. The latest round of stimulus funds also includes additional payment for those who are eligible for more money now that their 2020 returns have been processed.

Stimulus payments have been paramount for millions of Americans who lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic. The payments have been so paramount, many workers across the country have been able to live off them while looking for better jobs and opportunities.

That has led to hiring shortages in the fast food, bar, restaurant, and hotel industries as workers hold out for better benefits such as paid time off and paid sick leave. Workers who previously took jobs with little benefits, now want companies and employers to do more for them and to protect them from the virus.

While business leaders across the country have blamed stimulus checks and government assistance for the hiring issues, University of Pennsylvania Professor Ioana Marinescu told the New York Times, it’s a bit more complicated.

“Right now what seems to be happening is that job creation is outpacing the search effort that workers are putting forth,” Professor Marinescu told the Times. “Compared to how people reacted last spring, it’s not that long ago, but the situation has changed a bit.

According to Marinescu, a decline in workers’ desire to pursue employment matters more when there are a significant number of job openings available. This is the likely situation as the economy slowly begins to reopen.

Many who received their stimulus check early in the year may be wondering if more help is on the way. It’s likely Democrats will push for a fourth stimulus check or recurring payments, while Republicans will counter,  saying the country’s debt is already too high and workers need to get back to work.

18-Year-Old Marion Lewis Arrested in Shooting Death of Seven-Year-Old Jaslyn Adams In Chicago

18-Year-Old Marion Lewis Arrested in Shooting Death of Seven-Year-Old Jaslyn Adams In Chicago

Chicago police arrested a suspect connected to the shooting death last week of 7-year-old Jaslyn Adams after gunmen fired a barrage of bullets into her father’s car in a McDonald’s drive-thru.

According to a press release from the CPD, Marion Lewis, 18, was captured on Thursday after an alleged car chase involving police ended with a crash and shoot out. Chicago law enforcement agents monitored the suspect’s activity while he was holed up in an undisclosed  Chicago suburb.

Chicago Police Department (CPD) Superintendent revealed that Lewis was a suspect in the McDonald’s shooting during a press conference and that there were other key players involved.

“You can run, but you can’t hide,” Brown said at a news conference on Saturday. He also had a message for Adams’ killers. “We are going to bring you to justice for this crime. The Adams family deserves nothing less.”

The head of the CPD did not disclose how many suspects the department was pursuing.

“We are limited in what we can say because we have other offenders to bring in on this horrific crime,” Brown said.

Following Lewis’ arrest, CPD recovered automatic assault rifles that investigators linked back to shell casings found at the McDonald’s where Adams was killed.

“Both those weapons that were on his person that were recovered, they did test positive to the murder weapons used at the scene to kill Jaslyn,” CPD Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said at Saturday’s press conference.

When asked if Jontae Adams, Jaslyn’s father, was the intended target, Brown replied, “Let’s get to the point of bringing all of the offenders to justice, then we’ll tell the full story of what happened here.”

The little girl’s grandmother, Lawanda McMullen, appealed to the suspects-at-large with a poignant message.

“Just turn yourself in,” McMullen said of the suspects in an interview with ABC station WLS-TV in Chicago. “You know a 7-year-old girl. She had nothing to do with that at all. You know if you have any heart, you know. If you have a child, just think about your family.”

Lewis has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault on a police officer, robbery, aggravated vehicular hijacking, various gun charges, unlawful restraint and possession of a stolen vehicle.

He appeared in court on Sunday and is being held without bond.

78-Year-Old Realtor Turned Powerlifting Champion Sets 19 World Records

78-Year-Old Realtor Turned Powerlifting Champion Sets 19 World Records

Former Realtor Nora Langdon had a goal to get into shape and now she’s a powerlifting champion who has set 19 world records.

“It was intimidating but I said I’m not going to look at everybody else,” Langdon told Fox 2 Detroit. “I’m just going to look at my trainer and keep going. You just have to be consistent and keep doing it and don’t let your mind or people tell you you can’t. As long as you’re consistent you can do it.”

From Realtor to Powerlifting Champion

Langdon started her powerlifting at age 65. She joined the Royal Oak Gym in Michigan and began her training regimen with Art Little.

“She watched us getting ready for a powerlifting meet and asked a question I’ll never forget it; ‘Do you have any old broads doing that?’ And I said ‘Yeah,'” Art Little shared with Fox 2 Detroit. “She came and watched us at the meet and said she wanted to do it.”

Every since Langdon stepped foot into Royal Oak Gym, she’s been attending several times a week to break her own records. It all started with the basics, using a broom as a barbell. She worked her way up to heavier weights and now she’s one of the best in her state for her age range. Lifting her become her passion. Now, she bench presses up to 185 and deadlifts around 400.

“I never went to a gym or picked up anything before the age of 65,” Langdon told Good Morning America. “On the first day I started, I went home that night and told myself that I’m never going back again because it was too much for me. Then I heard a voice saying, ‘go back.’ So, I went back and here I am today.”

Langdon has experienced a complete transformation in the last 15 years. She weighed over 210 pounds in 2007 and struggled to maintain good fitness levels for her age. Now, she competes in competitions under the American Powerlifting Federation and has earned state, national, and world records. Langdon proves that fitness success is possible at any age if you have a coach and commit to your goals.

Master P Says He Negotiated $2.5 Million Product Deal For Son Hercy Miller; Waiting for NCAA Student Athlete Rules to Change

Master P says he has a $2.5 million dollar deal on the table for son Hercy Miller if NCAA changes the payment rules for college athletes. The No Limit Records founder and business mogul negotiated a product deal that could make his son a multi-million dollar college athlete.

This deal is all dependent on the NCAA rule changes that may take place in August. Current rules for the National Collegiate Athletic Association prohibit student-athletes from making money off their name, image, or likeness (NIL). Third-party endorsements have not been allowed for college students. But that could all change in a few months.

“I told Hercy he’ll probably be the highest-paid college player in college basketball history if he do this deal,” says Master P during an interview with TMZ Sports. “Guys that are going to the G League, they’re not even getting that type of money.”

He adds, “I made $400 a month and that’s what the players are making right now. This kid get a chance to make $2.5 million right out the gate and be at an HBCU.”

Master P Believes NCAA Rule Changes Could Be a Game-Changer

Historically, the perks associated with being a college athlete were limited. Over the years, there have been changes to increase the privileges for student-athletes in the NCAA.

“Throughout our efforts to enhance support for college athletes, the NCAA has relied upon considerable feedback from and the engagement of our members, including numerous student-athletes, from all three divisions,” said Michael V. Drake, chair of the board and president of Ohio State, in a statement released last year. “Allowing promotions and third-party endorsements is uncharted territory.”

The NCAA rules require student athletes to maintain amateur athletic status. They are barred from receiving payment for playing the sport, endorsing commercial products, and gaining representation by an agency, just to name a few restrictions.

In December, a comprehensive bill of rights was introduced by Senators Cory Booker and Richard Blumenthal. It’s called the College Athletics Bill of Rights. This would allow more athletes to reap the benefits of their athletic prowess and personal brand by opening doors to more revenue-generating opportunities.

“I work hard so I want to be able to make money off of my own name,” says Miller. “That’s going to be a blessing.”

If the NCAA rule changes, Master P will also have a deal ready for his other son, Mercy Miller, who is one of the top high school Freshman basket players in the nation.

“We have a lot of deals on the table, not only for Hercy, but for Mercy,” P told TMZ. “In August, the league is changing… the NCAA. You’ll be able to make money off your likeness. You’ll be able to do marketing deals.”

Hershey Miller On Track To Earn Millions at HBCU If NCAA Rule Changes

Last month, Master P announced that Hercy Miller made the decision to attend Tennessee State University (TSU). Founded in 1912, TSU is an HBCU located in Nashville. Famous celebrities who attended the university include media entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey and Olympic sprint champion Wilma Rudolph.

Prominent schools had their eyes on Miller. Vanderbilt, LSU, USC, UCLA were all Division I college programs that were on the table. Despite the prestige associate with these universities, Miller wanted to show athletes that there are more quality options available.

“I want to be a leader and a dream of mine and a goal of mine is to change the narrative,” Miller told the Tennessean. “I want to show people you don’t have to go to one of these big schools, Power Five conference schools, just to be great. There are a lot of great people who came out of HBCUs or mid-major schools. I want to be the next one.”
