Black Teen Forced To Remove Black Lives Matter Face Mask At Graduation

The Black Lives Matter movement has become a topic of conversation across the country with more and more people becoming vocal about ending police brutality and racial injustice. This week, a young high school graduate found himself at odds with his school when he was forced to take off his face mask because it read “Black Lives Matter.”

Eighteen-year-old Dean Holmes, who attends York Catholic High School in York, Pennsylvania, was told by school administration that he had to remove the mask due to its political affiliation if he wanted to take part in his graduation ceremony. “I was so mad,” Holmes tells The New York Post. “That’s pretty much them saying ‘No, we don’t care about you at all. We don’t care about your health … and we also don’t care about you as a Black man.’”

The New York Post reports that John Holmes, father of Dean, detailed the incident in a lengthy post on his social media, describing the racist incidents his son was subject to at school. One of those things was being told that he was not allowed to read a speech about activism because it was deemed “too controversial.”

“As a parent I will not stand for my son being humiliated publicly, having his basic human dignity crushed on what should have been one of the happiest days of his young life,” he wrote. “My son literally was discriminated against in plain sight based on his race and his prior civil rights activism, and this latest action is part of a pattern and practice of discrimination at York Catholic and it cannot stand unchallenged.”

“In my opinion his health and safety were jeopardized when he was forced to remove his Covid-19 protective mask,” he continued. “Secondly, his freedom of expression was censored when he was compelled to remove his mask or face the very real possibility of not graduating.”

The school has responded to the backlash in a statement on its website saying they asked Holmes privately to remove his mask and that they have strict guidelines prohibiting caps, gowns, and masks with political messages at the ceremony.

“The graduate mentioned in the statement by the parent did not seek permission to wear a face mask in addition to the face shield, nor was the face mask worn at all during the 45 minutes prior to the processional portion of the ceremony,” the school wrote in a post. “It was not until the last minute, right before entering the church, that the face mask with writing was put on.”

Serena Williams Donates Over 4 Million Masks To Underserved Schools

Serena Williams Donates Over 4 Million Masks To Underserved Schools

The spread of COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus, has put the country into self-quarantine to protect citizens from contracting the virus. As a result, the CDC has advised people to wear face masks whenever they are outside. This week, tennis star, Serena Williams, announced that she will be making a massive donation of needed face masks for children as schools reopen.

The Grand Slam champion told her followers on Instagram that she will be working with t-shirt manufacturer Bella+Canvas, the National School Board Association, and educational brand Scholastic to donate over 4 million face masks to schools across the United States. The new partnership will also provide materials for the classroom to over 100,000 schools for 54 million children as a new school semester looms.

“I’m grateful to be able to help educate our schools about this resource, and to be given the opportunity to serve so many students,” Williams wrote in a social media post. The announcement comes as schools around the country scramble to figure out how they will reopen with a recent spike in cases among young children within the last month.

President Vladimir Putin: Russia Has Approved ‘World’s First Coronavirus Vaccine

President Vladimir Putin: Russia Has Approved ‘World’s First Coronavirus Vaccine

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the approval of a coronavirus vaccine for use on Tuesday, however, many doctors and scientists are skeptical.

According to CNN, Putin said one of his daughters has already taken it saying she had a slightly higher temperature after each dose, but that: “Now she feels well.”

“A vaccine against coronavirus has been registered for the first time in the world this morning,” the Russian president said on state TV. “I know that it works quite effectively, it forms a stable immunity.”

The vaccine was developed by the Moscow-based Gamaleya Institute and has been named Sputnik-V, a reference to the surprise 1957 launch of the world’s first satellite by the Soviet Union. Despite Putin’s excitement about the vaccine, doctors and scientists have cautioned it has yet to go through crucial Phase 3 trials where it would be administered to thousands of people.

Critics also say the country’s push to develop the world’s first coronavirus vaccine is partly due to political pressure from the Kremlin, which is trying to push Russia as a scientific force. Russia hasn’t released any scientific data on the medication’s safety or effectiveness.

Russian officials have told CNN at least 20 countries and some US companies have expressed interest in the medication. Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which is funding the vaccine research, said interest from other countries has been received.

“We’ve seen considerable interest in the Russian vaccine developed by the Gamaleya Institute abroad. Moreover, we have received preliminary applications for over 1 billion doses of the medication from 20 countries,” he said on Tuesday.
“Along with our foreign partners, we are already prepared to manufacture over 500 million doses of vaccine per year in five countries, and the plan is to ramp up production capacity even higher. So far, countries in Latin America, the Middle East and Asia have displayed the greatest interest in the vaccine, and we are about to finalize a number of contracts for the purchase of the vaccine.”
Dmitriev told CNN phase 3 trials will begin Wednesday in Russia and other countries.
“We have already reached agreements on conducting the relevant trials of the Gamaleya vaccine with partners from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and a number of other countries,” Dmitriev said.

Beauty Content Creator Jackie Aina Launches Collection Of Luxury Self-Care Candles

Nigerian American beauty content creator Jackie Aina has made a name for herself in the beauty industry. Her popular YouTube channel has over 3 million subscribers who live for her savvy beauty tips and commentary. Now the beauty maven is using her platform to launch a collection of luxury aromatherapy candles and accessories dedicated to practicing self-care.

Forvr Mood is a collection of candles and accessories made to do what its name suggests — set the mood. The new brand debuted three candles each with a different mood in mind from “Cuffing Season” to “Left On Read” in addition to a silk pillowcase and headband.

The brand has already sold out of its products and has amassed a waitlist consisting of more than 40,000 eager customers. The candles range from $32 to $49.

“Starting a business or even doing something unconventional is probably going to garner a lot of criticism,” Aina said in an interview with Refinery29. “You need to be able to confidently still believe in yourself with or without approvals and keep going, because that’s always what I’ve had to do. Don’t ever be discouraged.”

Aina added that she wanted a collection that helped those specifically within her community to practice more self-care and take care of their mental health.

“I feel that, especially in the Black community, we’re not saying, ‘Look, sis, take care of yours,’ and I felt it was extremely important to create products that were solution-based on making people feel good inside,” she added. “It’s about reeducating how we grind. I don’t just grind with my content; I also grind with my mental health and self-care.”

Oakland A’s Coach Caught on Video Displaying an ‘Unintentional’ Nazi Salute, Quickly Apologizes for the Gesture

Last week, a symbol of hate was displayed at a Major League Baseball game when an Oakland A’s bench coach says he “unintentionally” gave a Nazi salute, according to TheRoot.

The bench coach, Ryan Christenson, issued an apology.

“I made a mistake and will not deny it,” Christenson said in a statement. “Today in the dugout I greeted players with a gesture that was offensive. In the world today of COVID, I adapted our elbow bump, which we do after wins, to create some distance with the players. My gesture unintentionally resulted in a racist and horrible salute that I do not believe in. What I did was unacceptable and I deeply apologize.”

The Oakland A’s also issued a statement via their Twitter account.

“We do not support or condone this gesture or the racist sentiment behind it,” the team said in a written statement. “This is incredibly offensive, especially in these times when we as a club and so many others are working to expose and address racial inequities in our country. We are deeply sorry that this happened on our playing field.”

ESPN reports that A’s closer Liam Hendriks could be seen trying to correctly show Christenson how to properly do it the way the rest of the team was doing it. He attempts it a second time when Hendriks tells him, “No, no straight arm, you have to bend your elbow.  To which Christenson responds, “Oh, I see what you mean, oh no, it’s like ‘Heil Hitler.'”

Trump’s Payroll Tax Cut Would Kill Social Security

President Donald Trump’s executive order calling for a payroll tax holiday would mean the end of Social Security, critics of the order warn.

According to NBC News, both employers and employees pay 6.2% of yearly wages up to the taxable maximum of $137,700 in order to fund Social Security and Medicare. Trump’s executive order will initiate a temporary payroll tax holiday for workers who make less than $100,000 per year.

The tax suspension would likely run from August through the end of the year, Trump said.

“If I’m victorious on November 3rd, I plan to forgive these taxes and make permanent cuts to the payroll tax,” Trump told reporters Saturday.

If the tax holiday is instituted, it could be a death blow to a program already on its last legs. Current Social Security projections say the program’s funds will run out in 2035. However, those estimates were before the coronavirus pandemic hit the U.S. economy hard. The funds now will likely run out under current conditions, in 2032 or 2028.

Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works, an advocacy organization, said Trump’s executive order will drain the program’s funds in three years. However, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin argues that the payroll tax cut would not affect the program’s funding.

“There would be an automatic contribution from the general fund to those trust funds,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Sunday. “The president in no way wants to harm those trust funds, so they would be reimbursed, just as they’ve always been in the past when we’ve done these types of things.

Altman responded saying the idea would not work. Social Security currently has reserves of $2.9 trillion. Meanwhile, payroll taxes bring in $1 trillion per year.

“If he throws it until the end of 2023, then benefits will stop, because there’s not enough money in the accumulated reserve,” Altman said adding using general revenue would take an act of Congress.

″[Trump] certainly will make the case that he has the power,” Altman told NBC. “It’s not clear to me that he has.”

Trump said Saturday if he is reelected he will terminate the payroll tax and according to Altman, terminate is the perfect word.

“If you terminate the funding, you terminate the program,” Altman said.

Shai Akabas, director of economic policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center, noted this isn’t the first time a payroll tax holiday has been put in place. President Barack Obama’s administration also implemented payroll tax cuts around 2011, Akabas said, at which point general revenue was used to replace the money in Social Security’s funds.

Also, both sides of the aisle agreed to a payroll tax deferral for employers’ portion of Social Security taxes in the CARES Act that was passed this spring.

Black Lives Matter Protesters Attacked By Pro-Police Demonstrators in Colorado (Video)

Black Lives Matter Protesters Attacked By Pro-Police Demonstrators in Colorado (Video)

A pro-police “Back the Blue” rally turned violent over the weekend when attendees attacked some Black Lives Matter protesters in Colorado, according to The New York Daily News.

After a Black Lives Matter rally at Colorado State University on Saturday, protestors decided to head over to the “Back the Blue” rally over in Fort Collins. The rally, which was held outside of the Fort Collins police services station, featured attendees draped in American flags and some carrying Trump 2020 signs.

Here’s how The Daily News‘ David Matthews described the violence:

“In video of the incident, recorded on Saturday in Fort Collins, the protesters, who were vastly outnumbered by the pro-police group, are quickly surrounded and pushed toward an open, grassy area before they are attacked with punches and hit with various objects as the groups fall over each other on a ditch. At one point a man stabs at a man in all black with an American flag on a pole and another man strikes a man who is on the ground with what looks like a baton.”

The city of Fort Collins released a statement on the activity from that day.

“We respect everyone’s right to peacefully assemble. Our officers have consistently supported these rights in recent months as people have gathered to make their voices heard. For the safety of our community, acts of violence and other unlawful behavior have not and will not be tolerated from anyone,” said FCPS Chief Jeff Swoboda. “Truly supporting a cause means representing its values. Committing crimes in our community is not a way to support police. We stand for safety, period. We want all of our community members to feel safe here in Fort Collins and we reject any form of hate.”

Swoboda also released a video.

The police chief released another video yesterday thanking those who submitted names, videos, and more information on the incident from over the weekend. He said more arrests are imminent.

Stephanie Mills: Nick Cannon and Kanye West Are Acting Like ‘Paid Slaves’ and ‘Little Boys In a Sandbox’

Stephanie Mills may have “learned to respect the power of love” but not Nick Cannon or Kanye West.

The legendary singer shared harsh words for the two entertainers, saying, “We have no time for you two to be out here acting like little paid slaves,” according to NewsOne.

Mills, a former Broadway star and a chart-topping R&B singer, left a jarring message for Cannon, who recently lost his gig at ViacomCBS, and West, who is presently attempting to run for president. The singer took to her Instagram account to chastise the two businessmen.

Mills first went at West although she expressed empathy toward him and his mental health before she criticized his presidential bid, which may help President Donald Trump get reelected. She also lashed out at Cannon for supporting West’s run.

“First, I know that Kanye is suffering mentally. I know that he’s swinging high and low and I really pray and hope that he gets help,” the singer said. “But I must say that I’m disappointed because if he’s trying to help our community by running for president, it’s not helping our community. He’s not qualified to be president. Neither is the person at the White House at this time.”

And, based on a current clip shown on TMZ, when Cannon was asked about West’s run for president, he replied, “I love it! Yeah. We need another black man in power.” Mills had a response to that.

“Nick Cannon, now you? I don’t understand, because I saw you at Pops’ when he gave his speech at his talk, in Chicago not long ago. And then for you to come out and do what you did, like supporting Kanye. What is that? What is that? I don’t understand it. Kanye’s being paid to do what he’s doing, now are we to believe that you’re also being paid to be a distraction? You guys are acting like little boys in a sandbox with toys.”

Facebook Launches Initiative to Highlight Black-Owned Businesses For National Black Business Month

Facebook Launches Initiative to Highlight Black-Owned Businesses For National Black Business Month

August is officially National Black Business Month and social media giant Facebook has unveiled a series to support and highlight Black entrepreneurs this month.

The virtual events and programs are designed to highlight Black businesses throughout the month in addition to providing resources ranging from wellness programs to virtual training. One features a partnership with the U.S Black Chambers for virtual programs Black entrepreneurs can use to help their business as the COVID-19 pandemic rages.

“This year’s National Black Business Month is pivotal for countless Black entrepreneurs enduring the pandemic-induced recession coupled with historical Black business closures and unemployment,” U.S. Black Chambers President Ron Busby said in a press statement. “We know first hand Black entrepreneurs need targeted business support. In honor of National Black Business month we’ve partnered with Facebook to execute a month-long series of trainings and programs that targets topics and issues impacting Black business owners.”

“With 145 Black Chambers of Commerce and 326,000 members across the country, USBC provides leadership and advocacy to empower Black business owners through resources and initiatives,” said Facebook in a blog post. “The topics we’ll cover range from building a thriving online community to adapting in uncertain times to getting access to capital and professional networks.”

In addition to the virtual resources, Facebook will launch Facebook Elevate, a community focused on health and wellness for Black entrepreneurs.

“Each week, Elevate will connect with Black business owners, who will share stories of their business journeys,” the company wrote in a blog post. “They’ll also host weekly chats with different creators and influencers, like Kyle Dendy and Kelly Augustine, and host activities ranging from a workout by Ariel Harris Belgrave of Gym Hooky to a cooking exercise from The Spice Suite.”

The company also announced a partnership media company, The Shade Room, to help provide resources to small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with a new Facebook Live series.

U.S COVID-19 Cases In Children Spike 90% As Schools Begin To Reopen, Report Says

COVID-19 continues to keep the country in quarantine and practicing social distancing to prevent the spread of the virus. With the dawn of a new school season, many schools have started to reopen in different states despite concerns from parents and warnings from various experts. This week, a new report shows that within the last four weeks, young children have seen a 90% increase in overall new cases as a result.

According to a report by The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, over 380,000 children have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic started and represented 9.1% of all cases across the country. The new data also showed that between July and August there has been a 90% spike in COVID-19 cases in children. States like Illinois, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Arizona, and California have reported high increases in new COVID-19 among school-aged children. The new report counters President Trump’s previous statements saying children were nearly immune to the virus.

Other states like New York have opted to provide more remote learning options for parents to protect kids without disrupting their learning. According to ABC7 News, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this week that over 700,000 students will be participating in a blended in-person and online curriculum with 26% of students opting for digital-only remote learning.

“Our numbers reflect the work of everyone in this state, and the number of ICU patients and hospitalizations have reached new lows again,” Gov.Andrew Cuomo told ABC7 News. “That is extraordinary given where we were just a few months ago. We are fighting on two fronts to protect our progress: We are fighting against the rise of cases across the nation, and we are fighting against lack of compliance within our own state.
