19-Year-Old Woman Asks Federal Court To Watch Father’s Execution
A 19-year-old woman told a federal court in Kansas City that she wanted to be present at the execution of her father, Kevin Johnson. Johnson is scheduled to be executed by the State of Missouri on Nov. 29, according to NBC News.
Johnson, 37, requested that his daughter attend the execution, and Khorry Ramey told the court that she wanted to attend as well. Johnson was convicted of killing a police officer, OfficerWilliam McEntee, back in 2005 in Kirkwood.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed an emergency motion on Nov. 21 because a law prevents Ramey from attending because she is under the age of 21. The ACLU contends that the law violates Ramey’s Constitutional rights and serves no safety purpose.
Ramey told the court that her father was the most important person in her life and that being present during his death was a “necessary part” of her grieving process.
“My father has been the only parent for almost all of my life, and he is the most important person in my life,” said Ramey.
“If my father were dying in the hospital, I would sit by his bed holding his hand and praying for him until his death, both as a source of support for him, and as a support for me as a necessary part of my grieving process and for my peace of mind.”
“The harm that I will suffer because Missouri officials bar me from attending my father’s execution for no other reason than my current age is deep and cannot be fixed.”
Johnson’s attorneys have also filed appeals to spare Johnson’s life. Johnson was a 19-year-old himself when the crime occurred, and his lawyers also said he has a history of mental illness. His lawyers also claimed that race played a part in Johnson receiving a death sentence.

Ramey has been visiting her father in prison since she was a two-year-old, and she said that the two became close through visits, telephone calls and emails. Ramey also has a newborn son and was able to bring the infant to meet his grandpa in October.
Black Family Closes $1 Million Deal To Transform Mississippi Plaza Into Modern-Day Black Wall Street
After several banks turned down his loan request, this entrepreneur kept pushing through roadblocks to close on a property he wanted before it ever went on the market for sale.
Tony A. ReimonenqJr. of Reimonenq & Co. L.L.C., his wife, and three sons purchased a 20-unit strip mall in the Oak Grove community of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, with plans to transform the location into a version of the original Black Wall Street that was founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Historic Greenwood District.
According to Black Business, the establishment will be named Greenwood Plaza and provide spaces to empower and equip individuals to become entrepreneurs.
“I’ve always had a heart to help others succeed, but to do that, I first had to succeed,” said Reimonenq, CEO of the family business.
“I’ve dreamed of having a location from which others like myself can work and draw inspiration from Tulsa’s Greenwood District.”
“I want to empower the people at the bottom of the pyramid who just need an opportunity,” he added.
“They aren’t lazy. They work hard but just haven’t learned how to win yet.”
“I know how and want to link up with them to be a part of helping to not only change the trajectory of their lives and the lives of their families but of our communities as a whole. I see it as a civic duty,” he said, according to the outlet.
The Small Business Administration’s District Director, Janita Stewart, said the plaza is ideal for trade schools, supply stores, barber shops, beauty salons, insurance, real estate brokers, medical offices, lending institutions, caterers, florists, and events or corporate meetings.
“Having a resource to help someone start a business or grow an existing one situated under the same roof is a great asset,” Stewart said.
“Small businesses and entrepreneurs need various resources to do what they do best, which is to create, make, sell something, or provide a viable service.”
“When small businesses succeed, so does the economy,” she added.
New York-Based Business Incubator Announces Investment In 3 Black-Owned Spirits Companies
Three Black-owned spirits companies are sipping on success.
New York-based business incubator Pronghorn aims to help the next generation of Black entrepreneurs thrive, while expanding their brand’s investments. The Diageo-backed company has announced investments in three Black-owned spirits companies. Pronghorn’s capital investment in the three brands, Den of Thieves, Ego Tequila, and Tequila with Friends, will be supplemented with access to the company’s supercharging program.
Industry experts within the Pronghorn team will provide various consulting services to help accelerate the brands’ growth long term, as detailed on the company’s website.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to add these leaders and their brands to the Pronghorn family,” portfolio director Connor McKenna said in a press release.
“They are exactly the kind of visionary entrepreneurs we look for, individuals who will lead the way as together we build a more diverse and equitable spirits industry.”
Tequila with Friends (TWF) is a spirits brand launched by four entrepreneurs and long-time friends, Brandon Scott, Curnelius Arnick, Roddrick West, and Devin Woodson. In 2018, TWF launched after beginning as a blog for Tequila lovers. The company’s brand, rooted in friendship and fun, has grown to secure in-store listings in more than 150 locations across the U.S. during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Their retail footprint exists in Texas, California, the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.
As for the bourbon brand Den of Thieves, it was founded by Jason Armstrong and created to “honor the spirit of old prohibition moonshiners’ ingenuity and camaraderie.” The company’s portfolio includes four core products that are distributed to six markets across the U.S and available online. Those core products are Straight Bourbon, 8-Year Barrel Select Bourbon, Ginger Vanilla Flavored Bourbon, and Chocolate Flavored Bourbon.
Ego Tequila, founded in 2019 by Rikki Kelly, claims to be the first Black woman-owned tequila in Texas and the third in the country. The self-taught 23-year-old launched the brand’s Blanco and Reposado flavors in 2021 with minimal experience in the category. The products are now distributed in Texas with 50 off-premises locations and sold online.
While Black Americans represent 12% of alcohol consumers across categories, they only make up 7.8% of the sector’s labor force and 2% of executives in the industry, according to research conducted by Pronghorn.
They add that there also have been zero acquisitions of Black-owned spirits brands.
As a response to address these disparities, Pronghorn’s mission is to generate $2.4 billion in economic value, fill 1,800 industry roles, and commit to 57 Black-owned brand investments by 2032.
Celebrating 10 Years of Service and Impact, The Hidden Genius Project Announces Its Expansion to Chicago
Globally recognized and award-winning nonprofit, The Hidden Genius Project has expanded its tech, entrepreneurship, and leadership mentoring program to serve young people in Chicago, Ill.
For the last 10 years, The Hidden Genius Project has focused on training and mentoring Black male youth in technology creation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills in order to transform their lives and communities across its inaugural site in Oakland, with additional sites in Richmond, Los Angeles, Detroit, and most recently Atlanta. Through a student-centered and project-based approach, they invest in young Black men, give them access to technology training, and plug them into an ecosystem of innovation and empowerment.
Named 2021 Inc’s Best in Business for Youth Entrepreneurship, and in 2022 having received both a $3 million dollar expansion grant from Google.org, and the NBA Foundation grant for the second year in a row, The Hidden Genius Project is utilizing this funding in an effort to bring its innovative programming to Chicago. In addition to support from Google.org and the NBA, Nike, Jordan Brand, and the Jordan Family Foundation have made a significant award to support this Chicago expansion: The Hidden Genius Project will partner with Chicago’si.c.stars and After School Matters, among other organizations, according to a press release.
“Over the past decade, we have been honored to engage young people across the globe to inspire them to leverage technology to reveal their genius, and we have seen some tremendous results. Even as we have expanded to establish comprehensive sites in Los Angeles and Detroit, we continue to encounter the same brilliance, bold spirit, and infectious leadership qualities among our Black male youth. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to link arms with communities in Chicagoso that we might offer our young people an even deeper array of opportunities. There is nothing of consequence that we have ever accomplished alone, and this growth moment will be no different. We are grateful to collaborate with a rich cadre of community and funder organizations, and have an even deeper impact for Chicago youth.” says Brandon Nicholson, Ph.D., Executive Director of The Hidden Genius Project.
As an Oakland-based organization, The Hidden Genius Project has created thoughtful connections; their forthcoming site location in Chicago joins their additional operating sites in Richmond, Calif., Los Angeles, Calif., and Detroit, Mich.. This expansion marks another achievement as this year the organization is celebrating their 10 year anniversary. Last month, The Hidden Genius Project also became the first U.S. non-profit to be featured on a McLaren Formula 1 racing car through Smartsheet’s Sponsor X initiative. The platform replaced its sponsorship logo with The Hidden Genius Project logo, and the nonprofit designed programming in partnership with TEAM, Inc., to connect with Austin-based youth in the first Tech Slam Formula One catalyst event.
The Hidden Genius Project anticipates launching its Chicago-based Intensive Immersion Program cohorts in June 2023. The flagship program is an award-winning, 15-month youth development experience offering upwards of 800 hours of holistic mentorship and intensive training in a cohort-based environment for Black male youths in high school.
Additionally, the organization plans to provide Catalyst Programs in the community, which are free single-and multi-day introductory technical workshops. The Catalyst Programs are designed to demystify, debunk, and expose technology-centered skills and pathways for middle and high school youth, in partnership with community-based organizations, school districts, small businesses, and companies. This peer-led opportunity—facilitated by graduates of The Hidden Genius Project program—aims to ignite interest and expose young people of color to mentors, basic computer programming, and career pathways.
Safer Than Relaxers: Next-Gen Straightener and Curly Perm ‘GinaCurl’ Is Breaking the Status Quo
The link between hair relaxers and uterine cancer suggested by a recent study and lawsuit is potentially devastating news. But it highlights another problem: the scarcity of safer chemical alternatives for afro-textured hair.
Veteran hairstylist and textured hair educator, Gina Rivera, is setting a new standard with the GinaCurl—a safer, gentler, next-generation alternative to traditional relaxers, curly perms, and texturizers.
Relaxers in particular have been notorious for creating a vicious cycle of excessive touchups, hair loss, and scalp damage. “People with medium and highly textured natural hair who want a chemical service are looking for better options,” says Gina.
Inadequate textured hair training, expertise, and diversity in the industry have translated into limited choices and perpetuated the use of damaging products and techniques. Breaking the industry’s decades-old status quo was a driver for developing the GinaCurl.
Making healthy the new normal
Gina, who owns the multi-ethnic Hair’s Talent Salon, aimed to create a healthier chemical curl reformer and straightener that would eliminate chemical burns and overprocessing—hallmarks of traditional treatments—and work on multiple hair textures, including wavy, curly, kinky, and coily hair. The innovative method behind the GinaCurl (and its Straight Variation for those seeking a relaxed look) allows clients to retain moisture balance, length, and manageability with only one or two retouches per year while also giving them the freedom to discontinue without fear of hair breakage or doing the “big chop.” It’s a welcomed departure from what has become an unfortunate norm. The GinaCurl is making healthy hair the new normal for chemically treated textured hair.
A best-kept secret
Undoubtedly, however, it is the GinaCurl’s soft, smooth, shiny, and trademark natural-looking curls that have made the treatment a “best-kept secret” among some models and actors, like Loren Lott. “I love when I get a fresh GinaCurl,” says Loren. “My life is literally a wash and go without even having to touch my hair much for 2 whole months before I have to really style it. My hair is healthy and has grown tremendously. I made the best choice for my hair!”
In addition to giving clients an alternative path to hair health, length retention, and manageability, the GinaCurl has been a business-building secret weapon for stylists and salon owners, including those whose businesses were devastated by the pandemic. Certified GinaCurl Stylists benefit in part from an international waiting list of clients but also from the competitive edge they gain by offering clients more options and a unique treatment that finally delivers the results that have eluded them. A key reason the GinaGurl can so reliably produce consistent and optimal results is its customizability. In applying the GinaCurl or Straight Variation, stylists can accommodate clients who have multiple hair textures and porosity levels, allowing them to deliver uniform results. Certified GinaCurl stylists can be found on the Hair’s Talent website.
Judge Orders Russell Simmons To Pay Kimora Lee Simmons More Than $100,000
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has granted a motion brought by the attorney of his ex-wife, Kimora Lee Simmons, according to Radar Online. Simmons must pay his ex-wife more than $100,000 for attorney’s fees.
Court documents revealed that the record executive was ordered to pay a total of $100,773.37. Lee requested that Simmons pay $119,000 to cover the court costs she spent preparing the motion. Simmons has to make the payment in full within 30 days.
“The Court awards to Lee attorney’s fees and costs in the total amount of $100,773.37.”
Simmons and his ex-wife went to court over a countersuit filed by Lee’s estranged husband, Timothy Leissner, after Simmons sued him. The Def Jam founder filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife and the investment banker in 2021. Simmons accused the couple of stealing stocks that he owned to pay for Leissner’s bond stemming from a criminal case.
Simmons and the couple collaborated in an investment company called Nu Horizons Investment Group, and Leissner reportedly used stock from the company’s energy drink Celsius to secure his bond after he was arrested.
Leissner was implicated in a money-laundering and bribery scandal in 2018 and reportedly diverted billions of dollars from Malaysian State Fund 1MDB. After pleading guilty, he was ordered to pay the victims $43.7 million. Simmons contends that Leisner used 4 million shares of Celsius as collateral for his bond.
Lee admitted to using the shares for collateral but claimed that because Simmons had quit as manager of Nu Horizons in 2018, she did not have a duty to inform him about using the stocks as collateral for her husband’s bond.
“At the time [Tim & Kimora] used the Celsius shares for purposes of the bond in connection with the federal case, [Kimora] understood and believed that [Tim & Kimora] were authorized to use the shares for the bond.”

Deon Cole Talks Rocking the Mic as Host of 2022 Soul Train Awards and His Full Circle Moments
The legendary Soul Train Awards, presented by BET, is back with a star-studded evening celebrating Black entertainment and the power of music and culture on Saturday, Nov. 26.
Deon Cole, Emmy-nominated comedian, actor, and writer, will be bringing the laughter as host of this year’s 2022 Soul Train Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada. His presence onstage during Soul and R&B’s biggest night is a special opportunity to honor Don Cornelius’ legacy and all of the Black talent showcased on the iconic TV show.

For the Black-ish star, his early memories of Soul Train were empowered by the groundbreaking commercials represented by Black people during the 1970s.
“Those are the very first commercials that I saw that represented me. And that’s why it stuck in my head. I’m like, ‘Oh. I look like him. He acts like me. We the same,'” ColE told BLACK ENTERPRISE.
Fast forward, Cole is the mastermind behind the pen, lending his writing expertise to previous Soul Train Awards hosts, including Wendy Williams and Erykah Badu. It’s a full circle moment now that he has the privilege to rock the mic.

“I used to write for the Soul Train Awards, so that’s kind of surreal to me,” Cole said. “And writing for them, I just always sat there and thought to myself, ‘This is what I would do if I was a host.’ And so, when the opportunity came around I was like, ‘Man, locked and loaded. Let’s go.'”
The comedic genius himself is expected to bring his unique skills in between the heavy hitting lineup of performances.
“I just bring the funny, man. That’s what it’s all about, bringing the funny, keeping it fun, not being afraid to fail, using those failures as funny moments, and just keeping it real,” Cole explained.
“What’s one thing about Black people? You can’t be fake with them. You got to be real with them. They going to know. And so, when it comes to funny, that’s what I try to do. I try to stay grounded, try to stay in a pocket where we could all relate together. And that’s what I think I did with this.”

Ahead of the awards, Cole returned to Netflix to remind us of the golden age of comedy in his second and latest stand-up special “Charleen’s Boy.” Dedicated to his late mother, Charleen Cole, the special wholeheartedly embraces her memory with the opening of a raw conversation between the two. Cole also acknowledges the “50 Club” who continue to move and shake despite the loss of their parents.
“My mom lives through me, and that was my whole reason for dedicating the special to her,” Cole said. “I shot it on the day she passed, a year later, when I wasn’t supposed to, but I had to because that was the only date they had available.”
“And so I dedicated it, and I felt like she did it and she made me go, ‘Don’t mourn. Go out there and make people happy.’ And that’s what I did. And I just feel like she will forever live on, right now.”
In light of his accomplishments, Cole encourages others to stay true to themselves.
“You got to look in the mirror every morning. And the one thing that’s going to make you un-fireable is you,” he said. “Once you apply yourself to it, makes you un-fireable, it makes you different, it makes you unique, and they can’t do what you do. Stop going out there being what they want you to be, and just being this and just being that. You put yourself in it so they can’t get rid of you.”
