Meet The Black Woman Entrepreneur Whose Afrocentric Gift-Wrapping Paper Brand Is Truly Making An Impression

Lorna D. Cheatham is the founder and CEO of Clera’s Creative Gifts, a Black-owned gift-wrapping paper and gift bag brand that is known for its unique Afrocentric-themed designs.

A certified Women’s Business Enterprise, Lorna started her Detroit-based company in 2018 with the goal to bring jobs back to her city for disadvantaged, abused women of color and returning citizens.

Lorna, who is originally from Nashville, Tennessee, was one of twelve siblings in her family. She comments:

“Birthdays was always a special time for her family, although they didn’t receive a lot; they cherished what they got.”

At the tender young age of nine, her mother, Clera, was unfortunately taken away. Luckily, they were left with many of her precious memories, which is why she decided to name her company after her mother; it was her way of keeping her memory alive.

Clera’s Creative Gifts’ products are proud to celebrate the diversity and empowerment of people of color, that’s why all of their products are designed in America. Additionally, the premise for the company came out of Lorna’s desire to see more African-American products on store shelves in the wrapping packaging arena. Therefore, she began to focus her efforts on designing gift wrapping paper and gift bags that represented people of color to celebrate life events and special moments.

Furthermore, since 1997, Lorna has been a successful entrepreneur. She has been operating residential facilities for the mentally handicapped. However, in 2018 she ventured into a totally different arena, wholesale distribution. The goal of that company is to eventually open their own manufacturing facility in the city of Detroit that will enable them to offer employment to disadvantaged and abused women who have been victimized by domestic violence, as well as women returning citizens.

Clera’s Creative Gifts offers many colorful, unique, and Afrocentric-themed creative designs that will easily assist you with completing your wrapping needs for all special occasions including baby showers, weddings, birthdays, graduations, and more.

The ‘Corn Kid’ Partners With Green Giant to Give Everyone the Gift of the ‘Big Lump With Knobs’

Thanksgiving just wouldn’t be complete without a side of corn.

Viral social media star Tariq aka the “Corn Kid” and Green Giant teamed up to provide 50,000 cans of corn to add to Thanksgiving meal boxes that were being prepped Monday afternoon for those who don’t have food for the upcoming holiday.

A post shared by Green Giant (@greengiant)

In case you haven’t heard of Tariq, he went viral sharing his love for “juicy” corn which he also calls a “big lump with knobs.” And he wants to spread his contagious affection for the vegetable with the masses.

According to Pix 11, trucks headed out from City Harvest yesterday night and continued today to deliver the meal boxes to food pantries and soup kitchens around New York City.

“Corn is a vegetable, and vegetables are good for you,” he said.

Green Giant donated an additional 40,000 cans of other Thanksgiving vegetables that were sent to the locations. City Harvest reported that visits to the food pantries and soup kitchens remain almost 70% above pre-pandemic levels.

Food & Wine reported that along with his donations to a food bank, “Corn Kid” will be spending a week with Green Giant prepping a couple of “corn-tastic” side dishes and making an appearance on the Green Giant float at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, Nov. 24.

“What is Thanksgiving without corn?” Tariq said in a statement.

“Thanksgiving is practically a holiday about corn. I mean, every day could be a holiday if you get to eat corn at some point—but this is the one day that we get to stay home with family, watch a big parade, and then eat corn. Lots and lots of corn. It’s my favorite day of the year!”

‘Corn Kid’ also collaborated with the company to give away 25 free limited-edition Green Giant aprons that say “I’m a Giant Fan of Corn” on the front, accompanied by a message from him. U.S. residents 18 years and older entered the contest that closed on Monday, Nov. 21.

Winners for the Green Giant giveaway are set to be notified today, Nov. 22.

New History Program Serves Up Anti-Racist Curriculum For Schools, Using Award Winning Media Unmasking Tuskegee Experiment, Tulsa Race Massacre, and More

Film director and educator Brandi Webb collaborated with veteran educator Melody Michaux, to develop the 3E Program for Social Justice and Change.

The 3E Program is a U.S History curriculum resource that provides middle and high school educators with lesson plans, resources, assessments, and video segments and uses New York state standards as a basis, according to a press release. These standards fall in line with social studies requirements in many other states. Video segments used to accompany 3E Program lessons are from Webb’s award winning documentary, Betrayal of a Nation. Film topics addressed include the American Dream, the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, the Tulsa Race Massacre, and Reparations, along with five other topics.

With a focus on Ethics, Empathy, and Empowerment, the program offers instructors an opportunity to provide their students an in-depth examination of historical events that have impacted African Americans and People of Color. These events have been lightly touched on, distorted, or omitted altogether in conventional U.S History syllabi. The goal of the 3E Program is to build a new legacy free of racism.

Betrayal of a Nation is an experimental documentary that chronicles U.S History in the format of a trial and indicts U.S agencies on charges related to the oppression of Black and Brown citizens. The film received awards from the People’s Film Festival, IndieFilm Fest, and has screened at several festivals during 2021. After viewing the documentary, Michaux and other participants expressed a need for the film to be shown in schools as a learning resource for students. In response to the overwhelming demand to have the film’s topics integrated into school curricula, Webb and Michaux created the 3E Program.

Administrators from schools and organizations, teachers, and parents that are homeschooling, can access the subscription based program online at www.3eprogram.com. Professional development is offered to schools who wish to implement the program in their classrooms. The 3E Program for Social Justice and Change also provides virtual classes of the history curriculum for homeschooled students, taught by 3E Program educators. Virtual classes begin November 28th.

“Ms. Webb’s research and vision brilliantly takes students on a journey that fills many gaps in African American history,” stated Michael Oby, Professor at Clark Atlanta University.

Automation Workz, Seeking To Create An Inner City ‘Wakanda,’ Is The First Cybersecurity Reskilling Firm To Secure US Black Chamber Certification

HBCUs prove culturally relevant education can deliver career and mental success as they have produced 16% of Blacks with Bachelor’s degrees and 25% of Blacks with STEM degrees.

This same “Black Effect” occurs with Automation Workz, a cybersecurity reskilling firm in Detroit, specializing in IoT, network engineering, cybersecurity, software programming and soon data analytics.

Automation Workz learners, mainly Black front-liners, secure no-cost training funded by workforce development dollars. Normally, workforce development trainees have secured salaries averaging $38,000, according to a press release. “Automation Workz is turning the system on its head, assisting learners to secure positions earning an average salary of $67,250, often doubling their incomes. Just last week we had a learner begin a new job earning $130,000,” states Ida Byrd-Hill, CEO.

“Despite the many barriers our learners face, we achieve learner completion rates of 75%, a lot higher than the 15% rate of community colleges. We provide enormous support beginning with our personalized admissions process, weekend/evening instructor office hours and hands-on video gaming/digital simulation lessons.”

Ida Byrd-Hill declares, “Automation Workz secured the US Black Chamber of Commerce By Black certification to signal to potential learners we are utilizing the “Black effect” to provide a supportive HBCU- like environment for those pursuing tech certification. Front-liners no longer need to be afraid to pursue a tech career.”

“We coach them from basic tech skills through rigorous Cisco/Python/Linux certification training.”

“We are hoping the By Black certification is, also, a signal to corporations to hire our corp of highly credentialed Black tech workers as we create a real-life ‘Wakanda’ of emerging technology within the residential neighborhoods of inner cities, like Detroit,” states Ida Byrd-Hill, CEO.

McKissack & McKissack Taps Lisa Edmonds and Nijah Barley For Key Company Leadership Roles

McKissack & McKissack Taps Lisa Edmonds and Nijah Barley For Key Company Leadership Roles

McKissack & McKissack, one of the nation’s leading Black- and woman-owned architecture, engineering and construction companies, today announced the addition of two new members to its national leadership team in its Washington, D.C., office: Lisa Edmonds as vice president of human resources and Nijah Barley as director of information technology.

Each brings noteworthy core competencies and experience to the company as it undergoes unprecedented growth, according to a press release.

“I am excited about Lisa and Nijah because they will apply deep expertise and fresh perspectives to two of the most important aspects of our company’s strategic growth—our supportive people-oriented culture and our robust information technology infrastructure,” said Deryl McKissack, president and CEO of McKissack & McKissack.

“We’ve been growing quickly at McKissack and expect to maintain that momentum because of the infrastructure act, so we need Lisa for her depth of knowledge and deep networking skills to help us recruit top-notch talent.”

“McKissack is a great place to work, and Lisa has the skillset and strategic acumen bring that message to a new pool of talent and optimize our staffing process,” McKissack noted.

“I expect Nijah to make a major impact at our company too. He’s incredibly creative and always thinking out-of-the-box to find better ways to serve us and our clients. He approaches every challenge with such positivity. His mantra is always ‘I can figure it out, I can help you’—and he always does just that,” she added.

Lisa Edmonds: Combining HR and legal background to support talent acquisition strategies

Edmonds brings to McKissack more than two decades of human resources experience, most recently as human resource manager/benefits administrator of engineering and design firm Gibbs & Cox Inc.

“Lisa is a welcome addition to our team for many reasons, but what stood out to me initially is the fact that she understands the mindset of engineers and designers,” said McKissack.

“Even though we are known for our fulfilling and inclusive culture, we are a national company with professionals from many different fields and all walks of life on staff. Her expertise in so many aspects of our expansive industry will help us strengthen and support all members of our diverse team.”

Edmonds has also studied HR and employment law, which McKissack sees as another strength. “We work in several states. They all have different approaches legally on human resources, so someone who knows these intricacies and can anticipate our needs in all settings is a key addition to our team,” McKissack pointed out.

Edmonds said, “So much of HR revolves around employment law, beginning with the recruitment process. And once someone is here, we need to make sure that we as a company are doing things the right way.”

With McKissack expanding into new sectors and growing the depth and breadth of its project portfolio, Edmonds noted, “Our main priority is recruitment and development of impressive and accomplished talent. And once we recruit that talent, we want them to stay. Retaining new talent and the great employees we already have is critical to our growth and ultimately the success of everything we do. So, we’re going to support all team members with training and development that will refine or deepen their skillsets. Our goal is to build on the culture that is already established at McKissack, which is humble, hungry and smart.”

Edmonds holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Capella University in Minneapolis as well as a master’s in legal studies from Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law in Phoenix. She is certified as a Group Benefits Administrator, a Senior Professional in Human Resources and a Project Management Professional (PMP). She lives in South Maryland with her husband.

Edmonds said, “I came to work with McKissack because I was impressed with the leadership, I was impressed with the growth, and I was really impressed with the history. I was impressed with how the company started and where it’s going. I had been with my previous employer for 10 years and I’m hoping to exceed that timeframe at McKissack. It’s a company that represents achievement, especially for women and minorities, and I hope to strengthen its reputation with great accomplishments while I’m here.”

Nijah Barley is bringing amplified tech experience back to the MWBE where he started

Barley is a seasoned IT expert with a track record of implementing new technologies and systems to improve company productivity and profit. His new position is a homecoming. He began his career at McKissack after graduating college, supporting the firm’s increasingly progressive IT systems to sustain cutting edge developments in program management and construction management, architecture and engineering.

After four years at McKissack, Barley moved to the Washington office of McKinsey & Co., where he spent three years working with teams around the world and learning largescale enterprise systems. His was there during the Covid-19 pandemic and helped transition 1,500 colleagues to virtual options for the shift to work-from-home. Throughout, he kept in touch with former colleagues and his mentor, McKissack’s former V.P. of IT Andrew Corn.

“McKissack was much more than just a job; the team and Deryl are my family. When I went to McKinsey, it was always with the intention that I would return someday to bring back what I learned,” he said.

“I knew that I needed to learn, have exposure to other industries and develop a broader skillset to bring back different tools and a growth mindset.”

Now that he oversees McKissack’s IT department, he plans to build on the company’s existing cloud infrastructure to not only maximize productivity but also embrace vanguard technologies as they emerge. Priorities include innovation, cybersecurity and adhering to industry best practice. “I’m looking to increase the odds of our success for the work we try to win and make sure that the work we’re putting forward is gold-star standard and leaves a lasting impression with clients,” he said.

Barley, who’s originally from Brooklyn and now lives in Silver Spring, Md., graduated from Howard University in Washington with a bachelor’s degree. While a student, he worked on Howard’s IT support desk. He recalled, “I’ll never forget the day when I walked in for my first interview at McKissack & McKissack. I was just astounded by a fellow Howard University grad, Deryl McKissack, having an office in downtown D.C. and being the founder and CEO of such a thriving business with so much history. That has always stuck with me.”
