14-year-old Mother Leaves Newborn Baby In a New Jersey Restaurant

14-year-old Mother Leaves Newborn Baby In a New Jersey Restaurant

NBC News 4 New York reported that a scared 14-year-old mother of a newborn handed her baby to a customer in the El Patron restaurant located in Jersey City, NJ, before fleeing. Surveillance video captured the incident.

“She comes in. She looks me dead in the eye. I look at her, and she has these eyes of terror and like despair,” Franky Aguilar, owner of El Patron, said.

Aguilar said he knew something was wrong when the girl walked up to the counter. His father called 911, according to NBC News 4.

A good Samaritan stepped in to help the teenager and her baby. ABC7News said Alease Scott and her boyfriend were eating lunch at the restaurant when the distressed mother requested help.

“I said, ‘Do you mind if I check the baby’s vitals?’ She readily handed the baby over to me, so my focus went right onto the baby,” Scott said in the interview. She told NBC News 4 that the girl had dried blood on her leg, a sign that she was the mother.

NJ.com added that the baby girl still had her umbilical cord attached when the child’s mother handed her to Scott, who is trained in CPR and first aid.

“According to police radio transmissions, the girl fled the restaurant, but she was located a short time later at Old Bergen Road and Linden Avenue. She initially denied that she was the baby’s mother,” NJ.com reported.

Charges against the 14-year-old have been filed, according to Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione. NJ.com reported that the mother and child were in good health.

WTHR pointed out that Scott is a former therapist and preschool teacher who knew what to do. She was concerned that the newborn did not appear to be moving much, so she took action.

“I administered oxygen to the baby,” Scott told WTHR. “Within a couple of seconds of her getting oxygen, we got the most beautiful cry that you’ve ever heard. Her little feet started moving.”

Scott shared her experience on  Instagram and TikTok.

Black Lives Matter Activist Sasha Johnson in Critical Condition After Being Shot in The Head

Black Lives Matter Activist Sasha Johnson in Critical Condition After Being Shot in The Head

UK Black Lives Matter activist Sasha Johnson is fighting for her life after she was shot in the head over the weekend.

The Taking the Initiative party leader had been facing numerous death threats ahead of the violent attack in South London on Sunday morning, The Guardian reported. The 27-year-old was hit in the head by a single bullet around 3 a.m. No other injuries were reported. It is believed that the shooting occurred in an area where a house party was taking place nearby.

The TTIP released a Facebook statement confirming the accident had taken place after the activist became the target of “numerous death threats.”

“It is with great sadness that we inform you that our own Sasha Johnson has sustained a gunshot wound to her head,” the statement from ttip read. “She is currently hospitalised and in critical condition. The incident happened in the early hours of this morning, following numerous death threats.”

The Met Police released a statement saying there were no facts proving Johnson was the victim of a target attack. Detectives investigating the shooting think Johnson might have been shot by mistake and wasn’t the intended target, The Guardian reports.

In her party’s statement on the shooting, TTIP highlighted her social justice work within the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Sasha has always been actively fighting for black people and the injustices that surround the black community, as well as being both a member of BLM and a member of Taking the Initiative Party’s Executive Leadership Committee,” ttIp’s statement read. “Sasha is also a mother of 3 and a strong, powerful voice for our people and our community.”

Johnson rose to fame during the worldwide BLM protests in 2020 following the death of George Floyd. The Taking the Initiative Party has been hailed as the UK’s first Black-led political party, with Johnson serving as a standout figure within the movement.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Says Public Schools Will Return To In-Person Learning This fall

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Says Public Schools Will Return To In-Person Learning This fall

Reuters – New York City’s school system, the largest in the country, will offer no remote learning option in the fall, requiring all of its 1.1 million students to attend classes in person after more than a year of disruption, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday.

In the current school year, a hybrid weekly schedule involves students having a mix of in-person and remote learning due to the coronavirus pandemic. Most parents have also opted to keep their children home for remote learning five days a week.

Neither of those options will be offered in September, when the new school year begins, De Blasio said.

“It’s time for everyone to come back, it’s time for us all to be together, time to do things the way they were meant to be done,” the mayor said at a briefing.

“We’re going to have plenty of protections in place as we proved, even during the toughest months of COVID, that we can keep kids and staff safe with a gold standard of health and safety measures,” he added.

The decision to open schools fully comes as positivity rates for COVID-19 in New York and the country have settled into a sustained decline as more people become vaccinated.

In New York City, the share of residents testing positive for the virus on a seven-day average dropped to 0.71% on Saturday from 2.48% on March 8, according to state data.

Nearly half of the U.S. population has had at least one dose of a vaccine, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In New York, 52% of residents have had at least one shot, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday.

Given the declining number of new COVID-19 cases, de Blasio said he expected the CDC to relax its current guidelines that require students to maintain social distancing of three feet (one meter) before the start of the next school year.

“We have seen the CDC moving constantly with the data,” he said. “The fact is clear to me that as more data comes in, more progress, they’re going to make adjustments.”

A week earlier, Governor Phil Murphy in neighboring New Jersey declared that his state’s schools would no longer offer a remote-learning option in September, following similar moves by other states. Cuomo has also urged New York school districts to return to in-class instruction.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration this month approved the Pfizer Inc coronavirus vaccine for children as young as 12 years old, and Moderna Inc said it planned to seek approval of its vaccine for children, as well.

Nas, Fat Joe, LL Cool J Break Ground on Universal Hip Hop Museum in The Bronx

Nas, Fat Joe, LL Cool J Break Ground on Universal Hip Hop Museum in The Bronx

Nas, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, and Fat Joe were a few of the hip-hop icons present at the groundbreaking of the Universal Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx.

The rappers grabbed their gold shovels and smiled for photos as they celebrated the official groundbreaking of the forthcoming Universal Hip Hop Museum, Rolling Out reported. Local politicians and business executives were also present along the Harlem River to commemorate the first hip -hop museum within the music genre’s birthplace.

“Hip-hop made me believe that anything was possible,” LL Cool J said. “It was the first time that I heard, you know, young Black men sound empowered. Most of the time when I saw young Black men, they were, like, putting their heads down being put in a police car…This was, like, the first time where I felt like, ‘Wow. It’s possible to be powerful. It’s possible to be somebody.'”

As the first rapper to earn 10 consecutive platinum-plus selling albums, it was only right that LL Cool J be present ahead of the museum’s building process.

“Today, we broke ground on the Universal Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx NY. FOR THE CULTURE💯 We’re doing this for the people today, and the people that’ll be here a thousand years from today,” he captioned an Instagram post.

“Hip-hop came out of the Bronx like Vietnam,” said Bronx native and rapper Fat Joe. “I’m just a kid, I’m talking eight years old, and I would be listening to hip-hop. And I knew this was what I wanted to do. It was born from nothing, and it has fed millions and millions.”

It has been two years since New York state awarded the museum with a $3.5 million grant to aid in its development. Earlier this year, the museum launched a $100 million capital campaign to further construct the building and its interior.

Funkmaster Flex Resurfaces Old Rape Allegations Against Charlamagne Tha God

Funkmaster Flex Resurfaces Old Rape Allegations Against Charlamagne Tha God

Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex threw himself into the middle of Charlamagne Tha God’s ongoing feud with Wendy Williams’ ex-husband Kevin Hunter by resurfacing 20-year old rape allegations against the Breakfast Club host.

Many were shocked by the startling audio Flex played on-air Friday, May 22, where a woman can be heard tearfully accusing Charlamagne of raping her 15-year-old daughter back in 2001 and that he has been “getting away with it,” Madame Noire reports.

“If he was going to be a friend to us he came to us and said don’t worry nothing is going to happen to her and I’ll make sure she’ll be safe,” the mother of Jessica Reid said in a 2018 interview on The Star Report. “He alluded us to believe and trust in him and then he turns around and violates my daughter by raping and drugging her and then…he gets away with it.”

At the time of the case, Reid never testified against Charlamagne in court. Her mother expressed her regret about the decision.

“When I made the decision for her not to testify I was focused on her well-being and I didn’t want to put her on the stand to relive that pain and suffering,” she said.

She also accused the South Carolina native of continuing “to make mockery about it” and “joke and laugh about it like it doesn’t even matter to him.” She also claimed the best-selling author has been “covering up” the allegations with his “high-class attorneys.”

As if unearthing the audio wasn’t enough, Flex made sure to take one final dig at Charlamagne by sharing his belief that the radio host is guilty of the rape claims.

The leaked audio came after Hunter issued out a warning to Charlamagne on Instagram the day before.

“After all the talk I think it’s time to share some real scary truths about an individual y’all really still no [know] nothing about,” he captioned a post captured by The Shaderoom.

Biden Hosting George Floyd’s Family at White House On One-Year Anniversary of His Death

President Biden had plans of introducing sweeping police reform laws to commemorate the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder. However, while lawmakers work out a compromise on the new legislation named after Floyd, Biden plans to honor Floyd by hosting his family at the White House.

Tuesday, May 25, marks one year since Floyd lost his life at the hands of former police officer Derek Chauvin. Last month, Chauvin was found guilty of Floyd’s murder and is awaiting his sentencing where he could face decades behind bars, BBC reported

During Biden’s address to Congress last month, the President shared his aim to have new police reform legislation sitting on his desk by May 25. But as senior staff within the Biden administration meets with Capitol Hill negotiators, both sides are working to draft a bill that will stand the test of time, Politico reports.

“We are not going to slow our efforts to get this done, but we can also be transparent about the fact that it’s going to take a little bit more time,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday. “The president wants to sign it into law as quickly as possible.”

Activists are in support of the slight delay as they demand a substantial piece of legislation rather than a quick one.

“My concern is, and I’ve communicated this to the White House, is that we come with a toothless bill to meet a hard deadline,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, president of the National Action Network. “I’d rather have a bill with teeth late than a toothless bill on time.”

Despite not introducing any groundbreaking legislation on May 25. Biden will spend time with Floyd’s family to honor the life he lost at the hands of a police officer.

“He’s eager to listen to their perspectives and hear what they have to say during this meeting,” Psaki said of Biden meeting with Floyd’s family.

Quincy Jones: ‘I Never Worked with Elvis Presley Because He Was Racist’

Quincy Jones: ‘I Never Worked with Elvis Presley Because He Was Racist’

It turns out Public Enemy was on to something. Legendary producer Quincy Jones said Elvis Presley was a racist.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 88-year-old music icon and famed entertainment producer was asked wanted the opportunity to work with the King Of Rock N Roll, he emphatically declined.

“No. I wouldn’t work with him,” Jones told journalist Seth Abramovitch in an interview published late last week.

“I was writing for [orchestra leader] Tommy Dorsey, oh God, back then in the ’50s. And Elvis came in, and Tommy said, ‘I don’t want to play with him.’ He was a racist mother — I’m going to shut up now,” Jones told THR. “But every time I saw Elvis, he was being coached by [“Don’t Be Cruel” songwriter] Otis Blackwell, telling him how to sing.”

Jones, who was in the music industry during times of severe inequality of the early 1950s, recalled other incidents of Hollywood racism.

“They called me to do Gregory Peck’s Mirage [in 1965] and I came out here. I was dressed in my favorite suit, and the producer came out to meet me at Universal,” Jones recalled. “He stopped in his tracks—total shock—and he went back and told [music supervisor] Joe Gershenson, ‘You didn’t tell me Quincy Jones was a Negro.’ They didn’t use Black composers in films.”

Despite the odd interaction, Jones maintains a legendary aura. Artists and actors such as Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, and Will Smith have produced career-defining work under Jones’ expertise.

Jones has been nominated for 80 Grammy Awards and has won an astonishing 28 times. He has been honored with several prestigious awards, including the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama and the John F. Kennedy Center Honors

CNN Cuts Ties With Former Republican Senator Rick Santorum After Racist Comments

CNN Cuts Ties With Former Republican Senator Rick Santorum After Racist Comments

CNN has cut ties with former Republican senator and presidential candidate Rick Santorum after he made disparaging comments about Native Americans.

Alison Rudnick, the vice president of HLN Communications and CNN Diversity and Inclusion, confirmed to Politico Saturday that Santorum is no longer affiliated with the news network.

Santorum, who served as a political commentator typically giving the Republican opinion on topics, said in a speech to the Young America’s Foundation that immigrants created a nation for a blank slate, dismissing the hundreds of Native American cultures before immigrants first arrived.

“We birthed a nation from nothing,” Santorum said in the speech. “Yes, there were Native Americans, but there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.”

Santorum’s comment received significant backlash. Fawn Sharp, president of the National Congress of American Indians called Santorum “an unhinged and embarrassing racist who disgraces CNN and any other media company that provides him a platform.”

“I was optimistic he would own it, he would recognize it and he would apologize, but he did none of those things,” Sharp said according to USA Today.

This isn’t the first time Santorum has made controversial comments. In the past he has received backlash for comparing homosexuality to pedophilia and tying Black Americans to public assistance and telling Florida teens fighting for gun control after the Marjory Stoneman High School shooting to learn CPR instead.

“How about kids instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that,” Santorum said as a guest on CNN’s State of the Union.

In a tweet Saturday, the former Pennsylvania senator expressed that he thought he would be providing commentary not typically heard by the typical CNN audience. He also thanked the network for the opportunity.
