Usher Wants To Follow 50 Cent And Launch TV Content That Will ‘Give People An Escape’

Usher has his sights set on more than just music. Much like rapper 50 Cent, the R&B superstar has hopes of expanding his musical imprint into a thriving media empire.

Usher has his sights set on more than just music. Like rapper 50 Cent, the R&B superstar hopes to expand his musical imprint into a thriving media empire.

The “Bad Girl” singer is gearing up to headline the Super Bowl halftime show at Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday night. The coveted gig comes on the heels of Usher’s highly successful sold-out Las Vegas residency, which turned stars like Kim Kardashian into repeat customers.

Now that everyone is on the same page in acknowledging Usher’s undeniable talent, the Grammy Award-winning singer is pushing himself to set new “standards” for his limitless levels of creativity.

“I push myself because that’s just a choice. I want to be great. I want to set standards,” he told Apple Music‘s Nadeska Alexis. “I want to be a standard that is seen through my passion. My passion for music, my passion for creativity.”

“Rather than become something that’s artistic by way of the videos that we create or the narratives that are inside of the music that then become something else [like a] TV series,” he added.

In fact, Usher credits hip-hop/media mogul 50 Cent for helping him craft his vision for intertwining his music into visual made-for-TV content.

“You look at 50 Cent, right, he creates Power. You heard the music first then you see the visuals,” Usher explained. “I’m hoping I can do more of that with the brands I’ve created with the songs.”

He continued. “It’s a matter of managing to monetize at the same time emotionally give people an escape. When you hear a song, you relate to it. It becomes an assistant in your emotional… It’s more than just music, it’s all of those things. Most importantly, it’s a connection.”

It’s similar to what he recently outlined in his Billboard cover story, which touched on the importance of creating profitable “commerce” around R&B music and culture.

“It’s about creating commerce in other spaces,” he explained. “Lovers & Friends [where Usher will perform Confessions in full in May] is a successful R&B festival that gives you a place to go and celebrate the songs that we make.”

“We need things that you associate with R&B that you can buy into. Like with hip-hop — glasses, clothes, cars, jewelry, sneakers … ancillary things that people can access. R&B needs and has the potential to have those things as well,” he said.

NYPD Releases Video That Led To Attack Of 2 Police Officers In Times Square

The New York Police Department (NYPD) released body camera footage of migrants attacking two police officers in Times Square.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) released body camera video of the late January attack on two police officers allegedly committed by a group of migrants.

According to NBC New York, after the video was released to the press February 8, there are differences regarding how the fight started. The footage reveals what led to the alleged assault by the migrants when they were ordered to move from the section of the sidewalk where they were standing.

When the police officers approached the group, one immediately yelled at them and said, “A Vamos,” which means “Let’s go” in Spanish. The group hesitated but then proceeded to move from the spot. Yohenry Brito, who was arrested and was wearing a yellow jacket, went to push a stroller, and the group started singing in Spanish.

As Brito walked away, he said something out loud in Spanish—according to NBC New York it was “looks like Ugly Betty”). That allegedly set off the police officer who was walking right behind him. The officer grabbed Brito and threw him against the wall, which led to the police officers being attacked on the street.

PIX11 reported that NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said that the police officers allegedly went up to the group because they were blocking the sidewalk. He said, “Everybody disperses except Brito. He turned around and got confrontational with police officers.”

Yet, the video seemingly reveals that it didn’t happen in that way. The police officer grabbed Brito after he mad the remarks as he is pushing the stroller away.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said a grand jury indicted seven people in the assault on the police officer. Brito was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, obstructing governmental administration, tampering with physical evidence, and third-degree hindering prosecution.

Yorman Reveron and Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel were charged with two counts of second-degree assault and obstructing governmental administration. Kelvin Servita Arocha was charged with second-degree assault and obstructing governmental administration, while Wilson Juarez was charged with tampering with physical evidence and third-degree hindering prosecution.

The names of the two other indicted peple were not released as they have not been arrested.

White House Issues Proclamation Regarding National Black History Month

On the same day the Biden-Harris administration released a fact sheet detailing its policies and initiatives that have directly benefited Black people, it hosted a Black History Month reception at the White House.

On the same day the Biden-Harris administration released a fact sheet detailing its policies and initiatives that have directly benefited Black people, it hosted a Black History Month reception at the White House celebrating the achievements of Black Americans.

According to Live 5 News, the White House also issued a proclamation, that reads in part, “While we still grapple today with the moral stain and vestiges of slavery—our country’s original sin—we have never walked away from the fight to fully realize the promise of America for all Americans. Throughout our history, Black Americans have never given up on the promise of America.”

The proclamation continued, “Unbowed by the forces of hate and undaunted as they fought for centuries against slavery, segregation, and injustice, Black Americans have held a mirror up to our Nation, allowing our country to confront hard truths about who we are and pushing us to live up to our founding ideals. They have helped redeem the soul of our Nation, ensuring the promises in our founding documents were not just words on a page but a lived reality for all people. In the process, the vibrancy of Black history and culture has enriched every aspect of American life.”

The announcement also credits Vice-President Kamala Harris with taking the lead on the administration’s push to improve the maternal mortality of Black women and childbearing people and enumerates other healthcare-related initiatives.

“We are addressing historic health inequities for Black Americans by making systemic changes to our healthcare systems that increase healthcare access while lowering costs. Today, more Black Americans have health insurance than at any previous time in American history. We are working to address the Black maternal health crisis—ensuring dignity, safety, and support for Black moms.  The Vice President has helped elevate this critical issue to a national priority by calling on states to extend Medicaid postpartum coverage from two months to one year.”

It ended with a symbolic proclamation that February is National Black History Month. President Biden also called on public officials, educators, and librarians, along with the nation in general, to observe the month via programs, ceremonies, and activities celebrating the achievements of Black Americans.

The theme of the 2024 National Black History Month is African Americans and the Arts, as the Association for the Study of African American Life And History, the official organizer for National Black History Month, has acknowledged. Black History Month began as Black History Week, established in the second week of February by historian and educator Carter G. Woodson because it aligned with Abraham Lincoln’s birthday as well as the chosen date of Frederick Douglass’ birthday.

Turkey Leg Hut email firing

Turkey Leg Hut Drama Escalates As Co-Founder Fired Via Email

The email firing of Price describes the circumstances of the decision, as well as barring him from returning to the restaurant under any circumstances.

Turkey Leg Hut is embroiled in controversy around its money troubles. According to Fox 26, following a review of its financial situation, the restaurant uncovered severe financial mismanagement.

Owner Nakia Holmes gave a statement to Fox 26 explaining that moves were made to address financial discrepancies.

“Unfortunately, we quickly uncovered financial discrepancies that demanded immediate action.” The action Holmes referred to included firing Turkey Leg Hut co-owner Lynn Price, who Holmes alleged abused Holmes during their marriage in a statement.

“After gaining strength from leaving an abusive marriage, I was subsequently made aware of potential financial mismanagement at my company, The Turkey Leg Hut. This prompted me to initiate a meticulous review with my new finance team. Unfortunately, we quickly uncovered financial discrepancies that demanded immediate action. This led to a temporary two-week payroll delay and the difficult decision to lay off six valued team members, promising their reemployment in late summer.”

The statement continued, “Additionally, we made the decision to permanently terminate two employees involved in financial misconduct. Our immediate plan is to address the two-week back pay promptly and continue on the path to ensuring The Turkey Leg Hut is celebrated not just for our nationally-known cuisine but also for our exemplary business practices, cementing our commitment to a stronger, more cohesive future.”

The email firing of Price describes the circumstances of the decision and barring him from returning to the restaurant under any circumstances. It also states that Price will be compensated for his work per the labor laws observed by the State of Texas.

“I am writing to you in my capacity as Senior Change Management Consultant at Key Synergies, currently engaged with Turkey Leg Hut. Following a comprehensive review of the company’s operations and financial status, we have been compelled to make several difficult decisions to safeguard the future viability and success of the business.”

The email continues, “It is with regret that I must inform you that your employment with Turkey Leg Hut is being terminated, effective immediately. This decision has been reached in the context of an extensive restructuring effort necessitated by the company’s imperative need to align operational costs with our financial realities and strategic objectives.”

Houston Eater details more incidents relating to money, but it is Holmes who was sued in 2020 by a former minority owner of the Turkey Leg Hut, Steven Rogers. Rogers alleges that Holmes reallocated funds from the business into other side ventures, as well as encouraging customers to patronize food trucks that Rogers was unaffiliated with. Holmes responded by countersuing Rogers for embezzlement and allegations of financial mismanagement.

In June 2023, Holmes alleged in a request for a temporary restraining order that Price took both money and her car keys from the restaurant, as well as committed “family violence.” Holmes’ lawyer, Alice Bonner, also alleged that Price sent threatening text messages to her son, who was assisting the restaurant as a consultant.

According to Fox 26, an employee anonymously commented that they have gone more than six weeks without a paycheck and are owed more than $1,000 by the restaurant.

The employee said that the situation is straining their finances, “We get behind on bills like rent, light bills, water bills,” the employee said. “It’s becoming a hassle trying to get what’s owed to ya’.”

Fox 26’s legal analyst Chris Tritico says that the employees who are experiencing payment delays have a strong case, “You should not give up on the money you’re owed, regardless of the amount.” There remain various avenues for the employees to get their money, such as filing a complaint with the Department of Labor. Tritico continued, “Creditors aren’t going to be as nice as you’re asking me to be to you, and they’re not going to wait.”

Usher Won’t Get A Paycheck To Perform At The Super Bowl, Yet He Will Get Paid

The talented artist can expect to see his sales, streaming, and ticket sales increase after he takes the stage

Usher will perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show. The talented entertainer has one of the most coveted slots that any musician and/or artist from any genre dreams of because of the large audience the football championship game presents yearly. And while Usher won’t get a physical paycheck for his dance moves and silky voice, the halftime show is still one of the most beneficial gigs a recording artist could ask for.

The Super Bowl usually draws more casual fans to the game than the regular football viewer audience, in part because it is such a big event that advertisers spend millions of dollars for a 30-second commercial spot to attract the many eyes that tune into the game. This is also the time of year when the commercials are just as talked about as the game or the halftime show, so the attention brought to the game isn’t necessarily to watch it.

Still, the incentive outside of the large viewing audience can only benefit an artist who performs at halftime. Sales, music and video streams, and interest in a halftime act usually rise dramatically once the performance is done.

Forbes reported that after Rihanna took the stage at last year’s Super Bowl, her record sales went up 390%. That included a 211% increase in the number of music streams from the day before the halftime show to the Monday after.

The previous year, in 2022, according to Billboard, the numbers for the Super Bowl performers (who featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson.Paak, and Mary J. Blige) increased for most. Snoop Dogg saw an increase of 143%, and Mary J. saw her numbers increase by 132%. Even Dr. Dre had a triple-digit increase of 108%. Eminem’s numbers went up 39%, and Lamar saw his numbers go up 35%.

In a Newsweek article four years ago, the media outlet reported that after Jennifer Lopez and Shakira performed at the 2020 Super Bowl, the streaming of Shakira’s music increased by 230%. Lopez’ numbers were even higher: an increase of 335% on Spotify, according to the streaming company.

With a new album being released days before Usher‘s Super Bowl Halftime Performance and a national tour starting later this year, Usher stands to benefit based on his reputation as a great showman onstage. But if history repeats itself, the talented artist can expect to see his sales, streaming, and ticket sales increase by a large percentage after he moves his way around that stage at this weekend’s Super Bowl.

UNCF Releases Special Report On Black Teacher Pipelines At HBCU Teacher Education Programs

The UNCF released a special report detailing recruitment, curricular, and co-curricular best practices that are being implemented at HBCU schools.

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) released a special report detailing recruitment, curricular, and co-curricular best practices that are being implemented at HBCU schools as major producers for public education systems across the country.

According to a UNCF release, the 40-page paper, titled “The Heart Work of Hard Work: Black Teacher Pipeline Best Practices at HBCU Teacher Education Programs,” identifies the best practices at four participating HBCUs to strengthen the Black teacher pipeline.

The HBCUs participating in the report are Huston-Tillotson University, Alabama A&M University, Albany State University, and Fayetteville State University. All four HBCUs are listed among the top 25 four-year HBCUs that produce college graduates who become Black teachers in various K-12 education fields.

Additionally, the report notes Black teachers impact the educational development of Black students by serving as role models, improving their educational experience, improving graduation and college enrollment rates, increasing Black students reading and mathematics state scores, and increasing end-of-year grades.

“Black teachers are essential to Black students’ educational, social, and emotional development. Yet, Black teachers only make up 7% of teachers in America,” Keeley Copridge, Ph.D., senior research associate, Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute, UNCF, and one of the report’s authors, said in a statement. “To meet the diversification of America’s P-12 system, it is essential that we strengthen the Black teacher pipeline. Historically Black colleges and universities are critical conduits in the Black teacher pipeline.”

HBCUs account for just 3% of colleges and universities, yet they produce 15% of Black graduates overall and 50% of all Black educators, according to UNCF’s Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute (FDPRI) and the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

According to the report, the scarcity of Black teachers in the U.S. is the result of several factors, including desegregation, racism, and the incorporation of standardized tests that resulted in many Black teachers losing their teaching licenses. Additionally, teacher certification exams eliminated nearly 100,000 minority educators in 35 states between the late 1970s and early 1990s. The report added the verification exams are not ideal tools used to screen the effectiveness of Black teachers.

“Black teachers are knowledgeable of these barriers; however, they do not grant students pursuing teaching careers permission to fail; instead, we continue to maintain high expectations for the students to succeed,” Nadrea Njoku, Ph.D., assistant vice president, Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute, UNCF said in a statement. “The research is clear. Black teachers matter. Scholarship repeatedly illuminates how Black teachers have a deep understanding of Black students and their lives in and outside of the classroom.”

The conclusion of the report calls for:

  • Continued research and analysis of culturally responsive curriculum in teacher education programs
  • Examination of the validity of teacher certification exams and potential barriers promoting the exclusion of specific student populations
  • Advocating at the federal and state level for funding for HBCU teacher education programs
  • Engaging private organizations to partner with HBCU teacher education programs to assist in supporting future educators
  • Increasing funding resources for HBCU faculty to implement innovative practices
  • Continued establishment and promotion of non-traditional pathways to becoming an educator

Singer Deborah Cox Discusses Role in the Revival of ‘The Wiz’ on Broadway

Singer Deborah Cox Discusses Role in the Revival of ‘The Wiz’ on Broadway

Deborah Cox is making her return to Broadway, this time as Glinda the Good Witch in the 2024 revival of the beloved classic "The Wiz."

Award-winning singer and songwriter Deborah Cox spoke exclusively to BLACK ENTERPRISE’s Selena Hill about her upcoming dual role as star and co-producer of Broadway’s revival of The Wiz.

Throughout her decades-long career, Cox has accumulated more than 30 credits in both film and music and produced several critically acclaimed albums. Now, the Toronto-born actress is making her return to the stage as Glinda the Good Witch later this year. In her conversation with Hill, Cox spoke about excitedly jumping headfirst into her new role.

“When I got the call from our director, Shelly Williams, about my interest, I immediately said yes and was at the workshop, ready to dive in to figure out what the story is that they wanted to tell this year, what the direction was, [and] what the main goal was about to be,” she said. “I knew that we were going to be embarking on something very controversial, groundbreaking. I know the shoulders that we stand on.”

The 1978 film adaptation of The Wiz boasted the talents of legendary singers Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Lena Horne, and eventually became a cult classic among viewers over the years. Cox discussed the pressure of recreating the magic of such an already beloved film.

“I know the expectations of this show, so I knew that we all collectively have big, big shoes to fill because this was a big big hit, and we are retelling a story that is so loved by our audiences. So it was a bit scary,” she shared.

Cox’s interpretation of Glinda draws inspiration from the late Lena Horne’s portrayal of the character in the film. Cox adapted it for the stage, which is much more limited in capacity. “I knew that the impact of Glinda would have to be of the same magnitude onstage. So how do you do that in a musical with only a few moments in the show?” she said.

“For me, Glinda is an anchor. Glinda is manifested out of Dorothy’s faith and hope and trying to find her home. For many of us, home has different meanings, so I wanted to make sure that I portray Glinda to be that solid beacon of hope and light and love and security.”

Cox also discussed the unique thrill of performing on Broadway, recalling the magic of a live experience.

“It is just exhilarating,” she said. “Every single night is different. It’s a different audience; it’s a different experience. You have the opportunity to tell a story with a cast of people that are incredibly talented. You have the lighting, the crew, the musicians, the orchestra. It’s this incredible exchange of energy every single moment, every single scene, so it’s different. It’s literally a different show every single night, and that, for me, is more exciting than being in a studio, recording.”

This role will mark Cox’s third appearance on Broadway, having previously starred in Elton John and Tim Rice’s musical Aida in 2004, and as Lucy in Jekyll & Hyde in 2013.

Watch the full interview below and keep an eye out for the Broadway previews of The Wiz starting in late March.

Exclusive Air Jordan 23s Gifted To 5 Universities’ Athletic Departments

The schools that received the latest sneakers are Howard University, Georgetown University, the University of North Carolina, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

The latest addition to Nike’s ever-growing lineup is the Jordan sneakers that have just been released, representing certain institutions of higher learning.

According to Complex, the athletic conglomerate gifted athletes at several schools that Nike sponsors with the exclusive Air Jordan logo that matches the universities’ color schemes. The schools that received the latest sneakers are Howard University, Georgetown University, the University of North Carolina, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Each school’s Air Jordan 23s match the school’s colors and feature the drawing of the team’s mascot and the school’s logo. Only athletes and staff members will rock the fresh sneakers. Nike hasn’t disclosed plans to sell the Jordans to the public.

The original Air Jordan 23s were released in 2008.

And while we’re on the subject of Air Jordans, it was recently reported that a set of sneakers worn by Jordan himself was sold for a record $8 million at a recent auction presented by Sotheby’s. The collection consisted of the six Nike Air Jordans that Jordan wore in the games that clinched the championships that Jordan and the Chicago Bulls captured.

The six sneakers were dubbed the “Dynasty Collection” and included a pair that was played in for the last games of the 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 1998 NBA finals. Jordan only played in six and was undefeated in the NBA Finals.

The Air Jordans were sold to Sotheby’s by a seller who originally purchased the collection from Tim Hallam, a public relations director for the Bulls when Jordan was playing. Jordan supposedly gave Hallam the shoes.

All of the sneakers, which were either a size 13 or size 13.5, were also signed by Jordan.
