Isabella Strahan’s Recent Vlog Offers Inside Look As She Prepares For Chemotherapy

Michael Strahan's 19-year-old daughter, Isabella Strahan, continues sharing her health journey as she prepares for chemotherapy to fight brain cancer.

Michael Strahan’s 19-year-old daughter, Isabella Strahan, continued sharing her health journey battling brain cancer.

In the latest installment of her YouTube vlog series, the college student and model prepared for surgery to implant a chemotherapy port in her chest at Duke University Hospital Cancer Center. “I’m getting my port placed today, which is a device that goes on your chest for administering chemo, getting my blood drawn, all that fun stuff,” Isabella said in a Feb. 7 video titled, “Vlog #6: Needles are no fun!”

“It’s not my fav,” Isabella admitted as she nervously awaited the prerequisite IV drip. In the video, she appears to flinch through the needle prick before she confirms with a little relief, “It didn’t hurt that bad.” Healthcare professionals faced some difficulty finding her veins, and a second try required an ultrasound guide as Isabella repeated the process of having the IV inserted.

The teen faced her day, smiling through her discomfort. Waiting for the next round of tests and procedures, the vlog cuts to Isabella playing cards with her aunt during a break in her busy treatment schedule. “I got an IV put in for this kidney thing…never fun,” she shared. “Healing from my port surgery…not fun at all. I now have a wire in my chest. They just put radioactive dye in my body, and then I have a blood draw, and then an EKG, then I have another blood draw, then I have an MRI. So it’s a busy day.”

As previously covered by BLACK ENTERPRISE, Isabella opened up about her brain tumor on a Jan. 11 episode of Good Morning America. She sat alongside her dad, who is a GMA co-anchor, as he shared her battle with a malignant brain tumor known as medulloblastoma. The teen was diagnosed in October 2023 during her freshman year at the University of Southern California. She explained that she was developing a fast-growing four-centimeter tumor in the back of her brain at the time.

The tumor was removed on Oct. 27 before Isabella began a month of rehabilitation and several rounds of radiation treatment.

Award-Winning BROWN GIRL Jane Receives $100K Sephora Beauty Grant Out Of Nearly 300 Applicants

Last year, BROWN GIRL Jane graduated from the 2023 Sephora Accelerate brand incubation program dedicated to building a community of innovative, inspirational brand founders in beauty.

Out of more than 275 applicants, fine fragrance brand BROWN GIRL Jane was recently crowned as the first-ever graduate of the inaugural Sephora Beauty Grant in partnership with The 15 Percent Pledge.

On Feb. 3, co-founder and CEO Malaika Jones was captured on video proudly accepting an achievement award at the annual star-studded 15 Percent Pledge Gala, which took place in Los Angele. She was honored with a clapping ovation before she graced the stage with Artemis Patrick, President of Sephora North America, and Danessa Myricks, Founder of Danessa Myricks Beauty. The announcement of the Sephora Beauty Grant celebrated a ‘shestory’ anchored in heritage, wanderlust, and masterful craftsmanship that is BROWN GIRL Jane.

“Some nights make this crazy entrepreneurial journey feel even more rewarding. Still floating,” Jones captioned a post on Instagram.

“Thank you to my unbelievably amazing @sephora family and the trailblazers at @15percentpledge for honoring @itsbrowngirljane with the achievement award at this year’s gala. @taibeau @niafana and I are so incredibly grateful and humbled, and we’ve only just begun. Eyes forward, hearts full.”

Founded by Jones and co-founders Tai Beauchamp and Nia Jones, BROWN GIRL Jane was bestowed with a $100,000 cash prize and a year-long mentorship program that “aims to support and empower Black-owned prestige beauty brands in the US,” according to a press release provided to BLACK ENTERPRISE.

The initiative is a rumination of Sephora’s ongoing commitment since doubling its assortment of Black-owned businesses and hitting the 15% benchmark in prestige haircare last year. The major retailer was the first of its caliber to sign the 15 Percent Pledge in 2020. Since then, the non-profit has put more than 600 Black-owned brands on the shelves with Pledge takers.

Beauchamp, who serves as chief business officer (CBO) at BROWN GIRL Jane, also expressed her gratitude to the partnering companies and emphasized the importance of the brand.

“Your commitment will shift previously normalized patterns for the better and more reflectivity. Thank you! We are so grateful to be awarded the inaugural #sephora#15percentpledge Beauty grant as we continue to bottle award-winning, mood-boosting fragrances that reflect the rich culture of the Diaspora to support our collective wellness.”

The love didn’t stop there. Beauchamp also gave a shout-out to her co-founders and Spelman College sisters for the journey up to this point.

“It took years and years to arrive to a place where industry finally recognizes and accepts that inclusivity matters,” she wrote. “To my loves @browngirlmalaika and @niafana, with the highs and lows of life, business, conviction, fatigue, lessons, and joys…we are doing it, Joe! Love to each of you for the vision, fortitude, sleepless nights, and commitment,” she continued.

Last year, BROWN GIRL Jane graduated from the 2023 Sephora Accelerate brand incubation program dedicated to building a community of innovative, inspirational brand founders in beauty. The founders embarked on a six-month journey learning directly from industry experts, beauty brand founders, and Sephora leaders and gained access to a host of resources to optimize retail readiness and boost their brand. The brand is no stranger to wins, with 22 beauty awards under its name, including Innovator of the Year by Refinery29.

“At BROWN GIRL Jane, our mission has always been to shift culture’s course and give voice to every part of us, to our stories steeped in heritage. This recognition means we’ve touched lives. To anyone who feels unseen — we bottle inspiration for you. To Sephora — we are grateful to be a vessel. Thank you for reminding us that the future smells like home,” Malaika Jones wrote on the company’s Instagram page.

Don Cheadle, Chloe Bailey, Lori Harvey, And Clifton Powell Join Muhammad Ali Limited Series ‘Fight Night’

Don Cheadle, Clifton Powell, Chloe Bailey, Lori Harvey, and more have been added to the cast for Peacock's limited series on the 1970 robbery that took place after Muhammad Ali's comeback fight.

It’s looking like an A-list cast of Black Excellence is being assembled for the limited series that follows the 1970 robbery that took place after Muhammad Ali’s return fight against Jerry Quarry.

Peacock’s limited-series “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” is already set to star Samuel L. Jackson, Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Dexter Darden, and Kevin Hart. Now, more famous faces have been added to the lineup, including Don Cheadle, Clifton Powell, Chloe Bailey, Lori Harvey, and more.

Melvin Gregg, Artrece Johnson, and Jalyn Hall are also among the lineup on the Will Packer production that’s set to kick off next week, Deadline reports. The Atlanta-based film will follow the hustler and cop at the center of the infamous heist that occurred after Ali’s defeat of Quarry.

It had been four years since Ali hit the ring after he was banned from boxing for not enlisting in the military. His 1970 comeback match against Quarry occurred at the City Auditorium in Atlanta, where hundreds gathered after the fight for a soiree. It was there that they were all robbed at gunpoint in what became one of the largest armed robberies in American history.

Cheadle will play Detective JD Hudson, one of Atlanta’s first Black detectives who gets assigned to Ali’s security and to investigate the robbery. Jackson will play Frank Moten, according to IMDB. Howard takes on the role of Richard “Cadillac” Wheeler, a gangster and associate of the Council of 12. Darden will play Muhammad Ali, while Henson takes on the role of Vivian Thomas, a savvy businesswoman and mistress to Hart’s Chicken Man, an eager street hustler looking to level up.

The limited series reunites Howard with Craig Brewer, who will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the series. Howard will also work with Henson for the first time since their hit Lee Daniels series Empire. The pair also worked together in Hustle & Flow.

Henson and Hart will reunite since their work on Think Like a Man and Not Easily Broken. Bailey has been adding to her acting resume with lead roles in Packer’s 2023 gospel inspirational for Peacock Praise This and Amazon Prime’s Swarm. This will be the first time many get to see Steve Harvey’s daughter, Lori Harvey, show off her acting skills.

Nielsen Report Shows Black Audiences Watch More TV And Desire Content That Represents Them

New reports are showing the growing demand for more diverse content from the demographic that's watching the most television.

A new report shows the growing demand for more diverse content from the demographic watching the most television.

Nielsen’s Diverse Intelligence Series released a new report that found Black audiences’ unprecedented engagement and impact on media. Dubbed “The global Black audience: Shaping the future of media,” the report discovered that Black consumers dedicate more than 81 hours per week to media consumption, a figure that’s 31.8% higher than the general population.

While Black viewers account for the largest percentage of TV consumers, 43% of Black respondents across five countries (including the U.S., Brazil, Nigeria, the U.K., and South Africa) are seeking more representation of themselves on television. Black audiences also want to see themselves represented in advertising targeting them.

Within the United States, 67% of Black viewers express a desire for increased representation of their identity group when watching television. The demand continues in other countries.

When it comes to advertising, 35% of Black Americans think brands depict them in a similar manner while 66% of Black consumers consider severing ties with brands they feel undermine or devalue their community. Media is also connecting the Black diaspora with over 50% of first-generation Black Americans following a Black creator located outside the United States, while seven out of 10 Black respondents from the U.K. follow Black creators from different countries.

The findings come amid growing criticism against major networks that appear to be drawing back diversity pledges made in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020. Surveys released in February 2023 found a growing decline in the diversity hires made in 2020 via NBC News.

“Brands and programmers trying to connect with Black America have their work cut out for them to push beyond ‘urban’ and represent the spectrum of African American traditions as well as emerging nuance from the expanding Black immigrant and Black first-generation perspectives,” said Charlene Polite Corley, vice president, Diverse Insights & Partnerships for Nielsen.

“When considering any kind of engagement with Black audiences, it’s key to remember that Black culture is vast and expansive, and the global exchange of influence needs to be taken into account.”

Other key findings include Black millennials’ heavy reliance on social media for news content rather than television, with many even feeling local television doesn’t share reliable news. Black audiences are also consuming TV content through cable-free options like streaming apps.

Cyndi Lauper’s Rapper Son Arrested For Gun Possession After Harlem Shooting

Cyndi Lauper’s Rapper Son Arrested For Gun Possession After Harlem Shooting

The son of pop music star Cyndi Lauper was taken into police custody after a 24-year-old victim was found shot in the leg in Harlem, New York.

The son of pop music star Cyndi Lauper was taken into police custody on Wednesday, February 7, after a 24-year-old victim was found shot in the leg in an apartment building in Harlem, New York.

Declyn “Dex” Lauper, the son of Cyndi Lauper and actor David Thornton, was arrested after police responded to a shooting on West 112th Street at around 7:15 p.m, ABC 7 NY reports. After a search for evidence, police located Declyn, 26, in possession of drugs and a loaded gun nearby.

Lauper’s son was not charged in the shooting, but he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance. The victim was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and is listed in stable condition at Mount Sinai Morningside.

Declyn’s latest arrest comes two years after he was arrested in a stolen Mercedes outside another rapper’s memorial, The New York Post reports. He admitted to disorderly conduct and was ordered to complete five days of community service and stay out of trouble for one year.

Once out of jail, he boasted to reporters about making music with his “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” hitmaking mom.

“Me and my mother have a couple of songs that we recorded,” he said.

Declyn is the only son of Lauper and Thornton who met on the set of the 1991 film Off and Running, People reports. They tied the knot in a few months later and welcomed Decyln in 1997.

Cyndia Lauper admitted to keeping her at-home life with Thornton and Declyn private and explained why they weren’t included in her 2023 documentary Let the Canary Sing.

“The documentary is my life and [director Alison Ellwood’s] work; it’s her interpretation of my work,” Lauper told Vanity Fair. “There were certain things I didn’t want to talk about, my husband and my son, because that was really private. The documentary is about my career, and let the canary sing.”

Declyn’s last Instagram post came four years ago and shows him in the studio with a drill rapper who’s calling out their “opps.”

Here’s How Not To Unintentionally Set Low Expectations

In business, we seem to be taught to settle for less than we deserve. But it doesn't start there: we often believe we're capable of much less than we actually are.

Originally Published Jan. 5, 2017

The biggest challenge to getting what you deserve can be your mindset. We often don’t realize our excuses prevent us from achieving great success. Excuses come in all forms, shapes, and sizes and rob us of productivity. In business, we seem to be taught to settle for less than we deserve. But it doesn’t start there: we often believe we’re capable of much less than we actually are. The sources of these misconceptions vary, making it even more difficult to solve inaccurate mindsets and go out and get what we reserve.

Hard Work Can Pay Off

If you grew up in an environment where you were told you wouldn’t amount to anything, you are not alone. Economic pressure can deeply affect parents, too, and whether intentional or not, self-inflicted limitations tend to be a result. If your whole early skill set is based on making ends meet, you might be less likely to dream big for yourself and your business.

Industries can also be unkind. The perils of unemployment and “dead-end jobs’ may keep us operating within the status quo. After all, it’s better to have your bases covered than to risk doing something that might not be more rewarding, right?

I was fortunate to grow up in a family that believes hard work and the right mindset will take you most of the way. But when I tried out for the local Boys & Girls Club basketball team when I was nine, I was cut. I was crushed. I thought for sure I would make it.

But my dad told me not to worry. This was a learning curve: I realized I needed to work harder and smarter and challenge myself. Fast-forward a few years, and I was recruited by the varsity high school coach when I was still in junior high. Some people would’ve been crushed and given up after that initial rejection, but I took it for what it was.

I have seen great success — in my own life and at work — when people inspect these learned mindsets and consciously decide to try something outside those limitations. Didn’t go to college? That might not matter. If you were told you could never do something, try it anyway. Start small and build on your successes.

Take Control Over Outcomes

The “self-employment” trap can also negatively influence your mindset. What stands between you seeing yourself as self-employed and a legitimate business owner, entrepreneur, and trailblazer is a handful of fairly straightforward paperwork. Can you open a bank account? Can you navigate your local Secretary of State’s website and fill out a couple of forms? That is essentially all that separates what is essentially a freelance position from a legitimate business.

This problem exists across industries: it’s about taking responsibility and control over outcomes. This may seem scary, but it’s a skill that can be learned. This is not about setting yourself up for obligations that feel burdensome; it’s about making things happen and discovering the freedom that evolves.

The biggest problem here is in one’s mindset. The distinction might appear subtle, but think about it: there is, perhaps, a stigma in these days of serial entrepreneurship and business startups making it big, seemingly at every turn. To consider yourself self-employed robs you of some of the rewards the immense effort you have applied entitles you to. You don’t have a boss. You are the boss.

The level of responsibility is up to you. If you work for someone else, they get to decide how responsible you are. For some, that’s truly more comfortable. But for some others, it just makes better sense to be the one making those decisions. You get to decide what risks you take and how you take them. You also get to choose how to own them when they succeed or if they fail.

Getting What You Deserve

Working for what you deserve depends on whether you have the drive to pursue every avenue and discover what’s possible. It depends on whether you have an itch that needs scratching that makes you want to show your high school graduating class, your cousins, and even complete strangers that your work is legitimate, valuable, and world-changing. And it sometimes depends on whether you have a real drive to reach the top.

Your potential is more than what you believe, even as you read this. Your capabilities are likely worth 90% more than you’re earning now. Make a game plan to get yourself there. Reflect on where you are right now. Consider what might happen if you believed you could achieve anything you can think of.

After you’ve done that, take a deep breath. You do deserve to achieve your dreams in business and life. By believing in this, you’ll discover you are absolutely worthy of success.

Congrats You’ve Been Accepted To College, Here’s How To Help Fund It

Money, money, money, money! Check out these four tips to appeal for more money in your college admissions financial aid package.

Originally Published Apr. 25, 2022

It’s the time of year when students begin receiving college admissions decisions and financial aid packages. Whether this will be a student’s first time in college or they are navigating the enrollment processes as a current or returning student, the availability of financial aid will likely be a leading consideration for enrollment. What options do students have when their financial aid award may not reflect their current situation?

Many students and families may not know they can appeal for more financial aid. The four tips below will help you take the necessary steps to secure all eligible financial aid.

Why should you submit a financial aid appeal?

Submitting a financial aid appeal is an extra step in the financial aid process — but it’s worth asking and advocating for what you need to be successful in school. Without sharing that your situation has changed since submitting a financial aid application, there is no way for the school to know.

Did you know that by federal law, there are certain reasons you can request a change to your financial aid package through what’s called a “professional judgment” or “special circumstances” appeal? Simply put, it’s your right to request more aid. Reasons to appeal your financial aid award include, but are not limited to, job loss, loss of a loved one, medical expenses, and childcare costs.

Where to start when asking for more financial aid?

A financial aid appeal or request is available to qualifying students at all types of institutions (graduate, four-year, two-year and trade) offering federal financial aid. It may take the financial aid office some time to evaluate your request, so you should ask about the appeal options as soon as possible.

After you decide which school you will attend, your best first step is to review your school’s website to determine if they have a Special Circumstances or Professional Judgment form to start the appeals process.

If the school does not have an online form, there is a free tool, SwiftStudent, that offers downloadable templates for students to request adjustments to their financial aid award. Downloading a financial aid appeal template can be done in a matter of minutes, because students simply complete a form, and their responses generate an appeal letter they can use to let their school know their situation. The question prompts on the form also guide students through what supporting documentation they may need to submit with their appeal.

What do you need to request more financial aid?

Whether you are submitting your school’s online form or an appeal letter, you will be required to include supporting documentation with your appeal. Supporting documents can include bills, signed letters from caregivers, medical or service providers’ costs, court documents; termination letters, unemployment benefit,; final pay stubs, or out-of-pocket repair costs after a natural disaster. Ultimately, it’s up to your financial aid office to determine what documents are required. The goal of these documents is to confirm the change in your financial situation.

Be sure to not submit original documents, as the financial aid office will need to retain documentation for their records.

What’s next after you submit a financial aid appeal?

– Additional Documentation: Your financial aid office may need additional documents or information to make a decision.

– Follow Up: Make sure to check your official school email address every day so that you don’t miss a response from your financial aid office. You can also reach out to your financial aid office to check on the status of your request. SwiftStudent has a worksheet to help you keep track of your communication and conversations with the financial aid office.

– Appeal Decision: While there is no guarantee that your school will adjust your financial package, federal law allows financial aid officers to use “professional judgment” to update the information used to calculate a student’s financial aid offer. If your request is approved, the financial aid office will share how much more aid you can expect to receive, if any. If you are offered a loan, it’s important to consider the type of loan and how the amount will help you reach your educational goals. If your request is denied, it doesn’t mean you’re out of options. Ask your financial aid office why the request was denied and what other community or institutional resources are available.

‘That Is Your Judgment!’: President Biden Gets Angry With Reporters Over Age Concerns From Special Counsel Report

‘That Is Your Judgment!’: President Biden Gets Angry With Reporters Over Age Concerns From Special Counsel Report

This doesn't make anything any better....

A press conference turned confrontational after a special counsel report accused President Joe Biden of having “diminished capacities,” including memory loss, USA Today reported.

President Biden’s age has become a primary concern ahead of the 2024 election season. With the report adding fuel to the already growing rumors, Biden became visibly upset after questions about his memory took over the conversation. After CNN’s MJ Lee alluded to American voters “watching” and expressing concern over his age, things became hasty.

“That is your judgment. That is your judgment. That is not the judgment of the press,” Biden said in response.

The reporter followed up with remarks Biden made in December 2023:

“In December, you told me that there are many Democrats that could defeat Donald Trump,” the reporter said.

“So why does it have to be you now?”

Biden provided a simple response before moving on to the next media professional:

“Cause I’m the most qualified person in this country to be President of the United States and finish the job I started.”

The 46th President continued his confrontational media responses after Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked “How bad is your memory? And can you continue as president?”

Biden shot back with “My memory is so bad I let you speak.”

Shortly after defending his mental ability and age, the President continued with his press conference by mistakenly referring to the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the President of Mexico.

On Feb. 8, Biden was exonerated from charges over keeping classified documents but a report from Justice Department special counsel, Robert Hur, said in part it was due to Biden’s “poor memory.” Biden pushed back saying the accusations have “no place in this report.”

“My memory is fine,” Biden said. “Take a look at what I’ve done since I’ve become president.”

The report further attacked the President’s memory on a personal level in regards to the death of his own son, Beau Biden, who passed away in 2015. Hur referred to Biden’s in-office in the report and claimed “Mr. Biden’s memory was worse,” accusing him of not remembering his days of being a senator or Vice President.

“He did not remember when he was vice president, forgetting on the first day of the interview when his term ended (‘if it was 2013 — when did I stop being Vice President?’), and forgetting on the second day of the interview when his term began (‘in 2009, am I still Vice President?’)” the report stated.

“He did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died.”

PETA Wants Amusement Parks To Quit Horsing Around With Animal-Themed Carousels

Could this be a bit of a stretch?

Animal rights organization PETA is calling on a theme park in Kansas to stop producing and selling animal-themed carousels.

In a letter from PETA’s President Ingrid Newkirk, the organization is asking Chance Rides to stop engaging in the celebration of animal exploitation by manufacturing themed merry-go-rounds.

“Children learn through play, and teaching them to have respect and compassion for all living, feeling beings can help create a more just and merciful world,” Newkirk said. “PETA urges Chance Rides and all other carousel manufacturers to hit the brakes on old-fashioned animal-themed rides and embrace designs that engage children’s imagination and showcase human talent.”

The group has argued several cases as to why animal-themed activities add to the conversation of animal abuse, like using their likeness for amusement and transportation. According to Newkirk, differently shaped carousel objects “engage children’s imagination” and “showcase human talent.”

In a letter to Chance Rides President and CEO Aaron Landrum, PETA argues that other companies are on board as times change. In 2018, snack conglomerate Nabisco replaced the design of caged animals found on Barnum’s Animals Crackers box, and Trader Joe’s switched packaging on products that housed elephants performing.

“Millions of people worldwide are calling for an end to the exploitation of animals in entertainment, including using horses, camels, and others as if they were living taxis,” Newkirk wrote.

“Would you kindly pledge to stop promoting this abuse by no longer producing carousel figures in animal forms? Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to hearing from you.”

PETA is holding everyone accountable for the way animals are treated. They are expected to launch an intense commercial during the 2024 Super Bowl. Featuring The Sopranos star and animal activist Edie Falco, the ad is intended to make fans reconsider eating cheese with their nachos. While making a meal in her kitchen, the actress is surprised by two mean-looking men who burst into her home to take the cheese.
