How Celebrity Chef & Bestselling Author David Rose Turned His Passion For Food Into A Profitable Career

Executive chef and TV personality David Rose has plenty of reasons to celebrate. He was able to turn his love for food into a profitable brand and career and is helping bring people together all over the world with his delicious recipes.

After releasing his first cookbook, EGGin’: David Rose Cooks on the Big Green Egg, in December 2021, Rose has earned the No.1 best-selling cookbook in the Barbecuing & Grilling category on Amazon. The book was a byproduct of Rose’s national ambassador deal with Big Green Egg.

In addition to Big Green Egg, Rose also worked with major brands like Omaha Steaks, Nissan USA, and Harley-Davidson.

Coming from humble beginnings, Rose is all about staying true to himself and knowing that success will come. Rose is a first-generation Jamaican-American and the youngest of eight children. Rose’s parents, who both worked as chefs, instilled the “self-belief” in him at an early age.

I was raised in New Jersey, come from a huge Jamaican family, and Mom and Dad were both career chefs,” Rose told BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“Growing up in the cultural melting pot, which is the tri-state area, every type of cuisine and food was readily available at my fingertips at a very early age.”

Rose recalls being enamored with cuisine from all cultures and falling in love with “all things delicious at a very young age!”

There aren’t a lot of chefs who have found success in the form of ambassadorship deals the way Rose has. But he says it’s something all can attain if they work to align themselves with brands they’re passionate about.

“When securing corporate partnerships and brand ambassador opportunities, I can’t emphasize more the importance of being true to who you are and the person you portray to media,'” he said.

“A lot of the corporations are looking for individuals who are unique and have their own original point of view.”

His grill-centric cookbook became a bestseller just ahead of the summer season when barbecues take center stage. For those looking for some ideas on the types of recipes they can whip up courtesy of Chef Rose, he shared some suggestions.

Amazon

“Jerk Chicken with Pineapple-Habanero Sauce and Korean Barbecue–Style Short Ribs are great for a backyard BBQ,” he said. “While the Birria Street Tacos and Mexican Street Corn Skewers would be a hit at taco night!”

“If you really want to impress your guests with an elevated dinner, you can always whip up my Porcini-Crusted Porterhouse with Sun-Dried Tomato Chimichurri and a Lobster Mac N’ Cheese…. it’s truly drool-worthy,” he added.

“Not to mention desserts like Smoked Sweet Potato Cheesecake and smoked cocktails such as Grilled Watermelon Sangria, your grilling options are literally endless with EGGin’.”

Living by his mantra “Good Food And Laughter,” Chef David Rose continues to take the culinary industry by storm thanks to his innovative recipes, style of cooking, positive personality, and focus on overall health and wellness.

Bulleit’s First Black Blender Sues Spirits Giant Diageo For Alleged Racial Discrimination

Bulleit’s First Black Blender Sues Spirits Giant Diageo For Alleged Racial Discrimination

A former blender at Bulleit sued the bourbon brand’s owner, Diageo, over racial discrimination and retaliation allegations.

Eboni Major was the first Black blender to work for Bulleit, Whiskey Raiders reports. However, earlier this month, she filed a lawsuit accusing Bulleit’s owner Diageo of unlawful discrimination, disparate treatment, and retaliation based on race in violation of the New York City Human Rights Law.

(YouTube)

Major’s suit accuses Diageo of subjecting her to “severe and pervasive discrimination” at work, where white women were allegedly treated better in the form of compensation and work responsibilities and being credited for Major’s work.

The lawsuit states that the discrimination “consistently resulted in a hostile work environment … which eventually led to Ms. Major’s constructive termination from her employment in retaliation,” the lawsuit states.

Major was a star at Bulleit. She made history as the first Black blender at a major distillery when she joined in 2015. In 2020, Major created Blenders’ Select Batch 001, which placed fourth on Whisky Advocate’s annual top 10 whiskies list.

However, at the same time, she was breaking ground in the whiskey industry and showcased a promising future, Major was already in discussions with HR over the alleged workplace discrimination. She complained about the mistreatment “including but not limited to differential treatment due to her race,” the lawsuit states.

In June 2021, Majors developed hypertension as a result of work-related stress. When she told Diageo, she was constructively terminated. The lawsuit claims the termination caused Major to suffer “extreme mental anguish, physical injury, outrage, severe anxiety about her future, painful embarrassment among her friends and co-workers, disruption of her personal life and loss of enjoyment of the ordinary pleasures of everyday life, as well as damage to her physical health.”

Diageo has since responded to Major’s claims and plans to dispute her claims in court, NY Times reports.

“Diageo celebrates and values diversity on all levels, and our long track record demonstrates a real commitment to creating a culture that supports inclusivity,” the statement said.

The statement continued: “When we learned of Ms. Major’s concerns and allegations, we took them very seriously, thoroughly reviewing each of them with great care utilizing internal, as well as external resources, and where appropriate we have reinforced training and guidelines.”

Keke Palmer Upset That Fan Invaded Her Privacy After She Declined Taking a Photo Three Times

Over the weekend, actress Keke Palmer took to social media to call out a fan who did not respect her request for privacy after she declined to take a picture with her.

The talented performer took to her Twitter account to make a statement about an incident involving a fan asking and persisting in taking a photo with her. Palmer recalls being asked three times but says she declined three times, yet, the “fan” proceeded to film the Akeelah and the Bee star.

The episode upset Palmer so much that she continued the conversation on her Instagram account.

“Clearly I’m still upset about it cause I hated that I smiled, but that is my defense mechanism to laugh or joke in an uncomfortable situation and it misleads people every time. Literally I could be wanting to scream, and on the outside I’m still preforming. The fact that I tell people no at all is therapeutic progress for me lbvs.

“Creating boundaries can sometimes be so difficult but when you people please or always try to avoid conflict, you let yourself down every time… Goodluck to all those who also struggle with this from time to time. ♥️

“If you ever want a picture with me and I say no, let’s just let that rock.”

Judge Holds Former President Donald Trump In Civil Contempt For Failing To Comply With Subpoenas From Attorney General Letitia James

Judge Holds Former President Donald Trump In Civil Contempt For Failing To Comply With Subpoenas From Attorney General Letitia James

A New York Judge held former President Donald Trump in civil contempt after the state’s attorney general’s office said he failed to comply with a subpoena for documents as part of its investigation into the former commander in chief.

CNN reports Judge Arthur Engoron said Trump failed to comply with the subpoena order and that his attorneys failed to show that a search of materials held by Trump was conducted. The judge will fine Trump $10,000 per day until he complies.

“Mr. Trump, I know you take your business seriously and I take mine seriously. I hereby hold you in civil contempt and fine you $10,000 per day until you purge that contempt,” Engoron said at a hearing Monday, according to CNN.

Trump plans to appeal the decision, according to his lawyer Alina Habba, who added they disagree with the decision.

“We respectfully disagree with the court’s decision today,” Habba said, according to multiple media reports. “All documents, as I explained, responsive to the subpoena were already produced to the attorney general months ago.”

Habba argued she went through great lengths to comply with the subpoena, even traveling to Florida to ask Trump specifically whether he had documents in his possession that would comply with James’ demand.

Judge Engoron was unconvinced, telling Habba, “You can’t just stand here and say I searched this and that.”

The judge also asked Habba why the response didn’t include an affidavit from Trump; she noted the former president does not send emails or text messages and has no work computer “at home or anywhere else.”

James, who has been investigating the former president for more than two years, asked the court to hold the businessman in contempt after he missed a court-imposed March 31 deadline.

“Today, justice prevailed,” Attorney General James said in a statement following the ruling. “For years, Donald Trump has tried to evade the law and stop our lawful investigation into him and his company’s financial dealings. Today’s ruling makes clear: No one is above the law.”

Trump has called James’ investigation a “witch hunt.”

‘Cooley High’ Cast Reunite to Celebrate How The Film ‘Changed the Landscape for People of Color’

‘Cooley High’ Cast Reunite to Celebrate How The Film ‘Changed the Landscape for People of Color’

The cast of the 1975 film Cooley High reunited at the 13th annual TCM Classic Film Festival to spotlight the film’s breakthrough in Black-produced cinema.

On Friday, Director Michael Schultz and Cooley High stars Glynn Turman, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Garrett Morris, Cynthia Davis, and Steven Williams sat down for a pre-screening talk about the film’s legacy, Chicago Sun-Times reports.

The panel was moderated by TCM host Jacqueline Stewart, a Chicago native who also serves as the chief artistic and programming officer of the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.

“I grew up in Chicago, where ‘Cooley High’ was considered Black national cinema,” Stewart said. “If you were from Chicago, you knew this film.”

Cooley High has been praised by many of the greats in Black cinema, including John Singleton, Spike Lee, and Robert Townsend, who played a small role in the film.

“This film is so influential,” Schultz said. “Without ‘Cooley High,’ there would be no ‘Boyz N the Hood.'”

The film was set in 1964 Chicago and followed the teenage adventures of high school seniors Preach (Turman), an aspiring writer, and Cochise (Hilton-Jacobs), a basketball star. Highlighting their delinquent misadventures (a joy ride on Navy Pier), dating mishaps, and a sudden life-altering event, Cooley High was one of the first films to give a face to Black teenagers across the country.

The movie also helped set the stage for the cast and crew who went on to carry out promising careers in Hollywood. Schultz, now 83, continues to direct with recent credits, including episodes of the TV series All-American, Black Lightning, and black-ish.

Morris (now 85), Turman (75), Williams (73), and Hilton-Jacobs (69) all remain working actors, with Morris serving as narrator in Peacock’s newest comedy Grand Crew and Turman recently serving as the face of Beyonce’s Ivy Park denim campaign.

“I didn’t realize the significance of what I was doing,” Williams said of how the then-young actors viewed their roles in Cooley High. “It was just a gig, then it became what it is now.”

The panel discussion comes a year after Cooley High was added to the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry “for being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

3-Year-Old Philadelphia Boy Dies Years After His Father Used Him As A Human Shield

3-Year-Old Philadelphia Boy Dies Years After His Father Used Him As A Human Shield

A family is mourning the loss of a 3-year-old Philadelphia boy who passed away last Tuesday after his father used him as a human shield in 2019.

Yaseem Jenkins was just 11 months old when he was struck in the head, neck, and buttocks while seated in the backseat of his father’s car, NY Post reports. Jenkins’s father, Nafes Monroe, allegedly tried to buy drugs with counterfeit cash and decided to bring his baby boy with him.

On Friday, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said authorities are still awaiting autopsy results but believe the toddler died from injuries sustained in the 2019 shooting.

“We are awaiting a medical examiner’s report on the cause of death but we have reason to believe the cause of death is his original injury from that shooting,” Krasner said.

Francisco Ortiz, 29, shot Jenkins and Monroe. He was expecting to get charged with murder in the tot’s death if it is ruled a homicide by the coroner. However, he was hit with an attempted murder charge. Monroe was charged with recklessly endangering another person and endangering the welfare of a child, CBS Philly reports.

“Our investigation has led us to believe that he intentionally had his child with him when he was making such types of purchases with the idea or belief that if someone saw that he had a child in the car, that they would not fire upon him,” Anthony Voci of the district attorney’s office said at the time.

“A human shield is probably the term that I would use.”

Voci said that Jenkins was not rushed to the hospital after the shooting and was instead driven to a house, Today reports.

Ortiz is also connected to the 2019 fatal shooting of 2-year-old Nikolette Rivera. Police accuse Ortiz of supplying the gun used to kill Rivera to the suspects in that case.
