Black-Owned Vodka Company Has the Right Spirits and Growth Outlook

Black-Owned Vodka Company Has the Right Spirits and Growth Outlook

The black-to-white racial wealth gap currently stands at $11 trillion and increases by $300 billion annually.

To close the vast financial divide, a new era of Black entrepreneurs should evolve by entering various industries and sectors to sell multiple products and services in domestic and international markets.

One example of a  Black minority-owned business venture into a product market uncommon to traditional urban enterprises is Plush Vodka — a multi-distilled premium vodka company.

The company CEO and master distiller is Malcolm R. Hale, who founded the wholly minority-owned company in April 2015. Hale and his partners operate a vodka line that includes the only premium plum-flavored infused vodka on the market. Its distillery and business operations are based in Florida and currently sell its products in 15 states.

The company promotes its vodka in unique ways, including co-branding traditional signature cocktail recipes like Plush Old-Fashioned, Plush Cosmo, and Plushjito—a plum-flavored mojito.

Its vodka is made from gluten-free, non-GMO corn grains, with one of its products containing an all-natural plum flavor. But quality raw ingredients are not the only things that set its vodka apart from other brands.

But while its products are extraordinary, the Black entrepreneurial beginner’s struggle is real and not uncommon.

Taking Flight in the Premium Vodka Space

Hale’s first challenges were raising capital and sourcing the right management team to assist him. Then, locate a strategic distribution partner to complement the company’s anticipated growth. All while balancing a home life comprised of being a supportive husband and active father of two young children.

As if these hurdles were not enough, many family members and friends told him that his dream was beyond reach and that he was assuming too much risk for his family—essentially saying that the vodka tasted great, but the business venture wouldn’t work.

However, Hale found a good use for the steady stream of doubt and negativity by leveraging it as energy to fuel his unrelenting drive to make things happen. But funding the business coupled with building a management team while fulfilling family responsibilities remained challenging.

In search of work-life balance, flexibility, and startup capital, Hale became an Uber driver. As an independent driver, he earned ~$100,000 to help fund the business while being a family provider. Hence, while some people in your network can drive a person to drink, Hale became a driver to help him make a premium libation for many to enjoy.

Hale’s hard work, persistence, and sacrifice made a dream come true. Plush Vodka has a global presence in the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Jamaica with plans to launch into more international markets, including Africa, China, India, Philippines, and Singapore, as the management team seeks to expand its footprint in America.

Another key to success is a continuum of product innovation. In early 2021, the company introduced the only plum-flavored vodka-infused cigars that are hand-rolled in Nicaragua. Additionally, other growth areas include the launch of 50-milliliter (e.g., 1.7 ounces) bottles for airlines and hotel minibars.

Hale’s business acumen is matched only by his desire to maintain a company culture that treats employees like family. Some of the senior level employees are members of several Black-Greek-lettered fraternities working together under a common goal to build a dynamic company.

“we pride ourselves on treating our employees as a family, so we focus on training, frequent communication, and team building,” Hale said.

Undoubtedly, the corporate culture and executive team’s bond helped the company navigate the pandemic that adversely impacted production and shipping costs.

The chief of events marketing, distribution, and partnerships, Kevin Bracey, stated, “we weren’t able to conduct in-store tastings or in-person events, which are essential marketing tools. But we were able to re-focus on creating more visibility in stores and via online strategies to sustain growth amid the pandemic.”

Wells Fargo Report Shows Black Americans Have Made Real Economic Progress In Recent Years

Wells Fargo Report Shows Black Americans Have Made Real Economic Progress In Recent Years

A Wells Fargo Economic Group report shows Black Americans have made significant economic progress in recent years, taking control of their financial futures.

According to Wells Fargo, 35% of Black women in the U.S. owned a business in 2019, 15% higher than the share of female-owned businesses in the overall U.S. economy.

Additionally, Black women have made gains in corporate board seats and even though just 4% of Black women are on corporate seats today, that is an increase of 25% from 2019, double the rate of women overall.

Black women have taken advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic, using their skills to start businesses in numerous disciplines including lingerie, beauty, and even feminine products. Additionally, a number of brands have made pledges to help Black women-owned businesses including Sephora, Target, Walmart, and other retail brands.

The Wells Fargo report also shows a growth in the Black population overall as Black Americans account for more than 25% of the population of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina. At the same time, the Black population in South Dakota and Maine have risen by 75% and 64%, respectively, as the study pointed out their low cost of living and employment opportunities.

The study, released in February, examined how Black Americans in the U.S. have faced significant structural obstacles that have kept them from full economic participation. Despite the obstacles, Black Americans have made real economic progress.

“The historical structural exclusion of the community from full engagement with the country’s economic, political and educational institutions likely have played a major role in shaping this current employment distribution,” the report states.

The Wells Fargo report also showed an increase in Black Americans pursuing higher education. According to the report, the number of Black Americans who have completed four years of college has grown 41% over the past decade, compared to just 25% for the total population.

Tech companies are taking notice too. Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Apple have all created partnerships with HBCU schools to train students and create diverse college to career tech pipelines.

LeBron James First Player in NBA History to Amass 10,000 Career Points, Rebounds, and Assists

With no signs of retiring anytime soon, Los Angeles Lakers player LeBron James has set another record as he adds to his future Hall of Fame standing.

According to NBA.com, James has become the only player in the National Basketball Association (NBA) history to have scored at least 10,000 points, some 10,000 rebounds, and racked up 10,000 assists.

He currently has 36,824 points, 10,150 rebounds and 10,004 assists.

“The King” achieved the milestone over the weekend against the Phoenix Suns when he passed the ball to his fellow “Banana Boat Crew” comrade, Carmelo Anthony, as he pulled up to connect on a three-pointer. Once the ball went through the basket, James created another record for himself and the NBA.

It was the 10,000th time he passed it to a teammate, and they scored off his pass with that assist.

According to ESPN, James, who finished the game scoring 31 points, pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out six assists, stated, “To now sit alone at a statistical category in this league that I’ve really modeled my game after, being able to score, rebound and assist. I sit alone at a stat is pretty like — I’d say ‘cool,’ but it doesn’t quite make sense to me.

“I get lost for words anytime things like this are happening to me because of where I come from,” he said.

“I automatically start thinking to my hometown of Akron [Ohio] and my upbringing and where I come from and the dreams that I had of being in this league and playing at the highest level.”

James is one of only two active NBA players who have a minimum of 10,000 assists. The other player is fellow “Banana Boat Crew” Phoenix Suns’ point guard, Chris Paul.

The future Hall of Famer is currently No. 2 in scoring this season. With a scoring average of 29.7, he is right behind Philadelphia 76ers player Joel Embiid, who is on top averaging 29.8 points per game. If he overtakes Embiid and wins the scoring title, he will go on the record books as the oldest player to win the scoring title as his idol Michael Jordan has the record at 35 years of age. James is 37 years old.

Bronx Woman Sexually Assaulted In Her Apartment Building In Broad Daylight

Bronx Woman Sexually Assaulted In Her Apartment Building In Broad Daylight

Bronx residents are left in shock after a 27-year-old woman was assaulted and raped in broad daylight inside her apartment building.

Surveillance cameras inside the apartment, located near Davidson Avenue and West 190th Street, caught the harrowing incident and the suspect on video.

The footage showed a Black man in what appeared to be a lobby or hallway of the building grabbing the woman from behind and placing her in a chokehold around 3:30 Friday afternoon. The victim reportedly fell unconscious, and then he sexually assaulted her.

After raping her, the assailant took off on foot.

A resident in the area spoke to the news outlet about the chilling assault.

“This pandemic has gotten everybody shaken up … for a young lady to be done like that. It’s heartbreaking,” said 70-year-old Margaret Cotton, who has been living in the neighborhood for nearly 15 years.

The unidentified victim suffered abrasions to her face, including her mouth and nose and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The alleged rapist donned a colored durag, black hoodie and jeans with black and white gym shoes in the video. He was also carrying a red and black knapsack.

According to a Harvard study, sexual assault has increased dramatically since the onset of the pandemic. During and after Hurricane Katrina, this phenomenon also occurred where sexual assault increased by 45%.

The study also indicated that victims may not always come forward.

Bronx police are still searching for the suspect. If you have information, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visit crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, download the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app or text 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. GONE TOO SOON: Missouri Politician and Changemaker Cora Faith Walker Passes Away Suddenly At Age 37

Former Missouri House of Representatives Member Cora Faith Walker passed away on Friday morning.

KSDK reported that the 37-year-old politician and attorney was taken to a local hospital following a grave health emergency.

Walker, who worked as the chief policy officer in St. Louis County, was a staunch advocate for reproductive rights and health.

News of Walker’s passing triggered an outpouring of condolences and emotion on social media. The beloved lawmaker and people’s champion was celebrated in death for her tenacity, brilliance, and kindness.

Former Missouri Sen. Scott Sifton wrote, “Profoundly saddened by the loss of Cora Faith Walker, a dear friend to so many. My heartfelt condolences to Tim and all who cared so much about her. We will all miss her greatly.”

Congresswoman Cori Bush expressed her disbelief and sadness at her friend and colleague’s passing. She even shared a photo that personified Walker’s mission—to enrich the lives of others.

“This still doesn’t feel real. Our community is broken by the loss of Cora Faith Walker. She was a fierce leader and a relentless advocate. As a community, we are holding each other close and her memory closer. May she rest in peace and power.”

State Rep. Raychel Proudie (D- Mo.) took to Instagram to share a moving tribute to sisterhood and love for Walker. The women’s relationship went beyond policy and  procedures as Proudie affectionately called the young attorney “Toot.”

Proudie also expressed to Black Enterprise how the community “lost a true public servant.”

She also said that Walker’s work and legacy would live on through her colleagues, including herself. Proudie’s expression of gratitude for Walker’s friendship and sympathy for Walker and those whose lives she touched was poignant.

“I personally thank her for having been a close, dear friend. I humbly offer my most sincere condolence to Cora’s husband, Tim Walker, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Drew, her siblings, family, friends, students, colleagues, and associates. Cora Faith Walker will be deeply and sorely missed.”

Walker was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2016 but resigned in 2019 to take the chief policy officer position under St. Louis County Executive Sam Page.

Page also gave a statement on the 37-year-old woman’s death.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Cora Faith Walker. Cora walked into my office every day with a hundred ideas and the determination to do them. She was a passionate public servant who advocated for women, newborns, survivors of sexual violence, reproductive rights, seniors, and frontline health care workers. She will be greatly missed by her St. Louis County government colleagues and me. We offer our condolences to her husband, Tim, and her parents.”

St. Louis’ first Black woman mayor and Walker’s “sister” and friend, Tishaura Jones, wrote, “Today our region and the world lost a giant. It’s not often in life that we find friends that become members of our family. I am so grateful to have had a sister in Cora.”

She continued, “Her light and her energy is something she shared with many of us. She made it her mission to help others as a public servant, a fighter, and as a mentor. My heart aches for her parents, her siblings, and husband Tim and I’d like to ask everyone to hold your loved ones tight. Faith..the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

As a member of the house, Walker was deeply passionate about fighting for the growth of Medicaid across Missouri. She fiercely advocated for equality and equity for minority mothers concerning eliminating disparities in maternal health.

As chief policy officer, one of her most significant accomplishments was helping to secure $173.5 million in pandemic and federal aid relief to local communities, businesses, non-profit organizations, and housing assistance.

The Ferguson native’s service to the community and the world will never be forgotten.

Our prayers and condolences to her family and friends.

Kanye West Adds Comedian D.L. Hughley To His Ever-Growing List Of Enemies

Ye is coming for comedian D.L. Hughley’s top after the comic shared some thoughts on the celebrity couple’s messy divorce.

In a since-deleted Instagram post regarding his daughter North’s use of TikTok, which he previously expressed discontent, the rapper managed to call out Perez Hilton and threatened to hurt Hughley all in the same breadth.

“I told y’all before about this tik tok stuff Now my 8 year old on here singing she fell in love with an emo girl,” Kanye began his Sunday morning rant, referring to the TikTok in which Kim Kardashian, North and a friend sang along to Machine Gun Kelly’s “Emo Girl,” featuring Willow.

He finishes off with, “And DL Hughley is a pawn Yeah I know a king not supposed to address a pawn but I address everything and find addresses DL So don’t speak on me or my children I can afford to hurt u.”

The Donda 2 rapper then uploads another now-deleted video of Hughley passing out onstage in 2020 after contracting COVID-19.

He captioned it: “We gone stop letting practicing drug addicts be used by leftist to Willie Lynch our Future Black people with our own opinion are not allowed to speak in public.” He goes on to further insult the The Original Kings of Comedy actor.

In a third and final post, Ye posted a screenshot of the city where Hughley resides. “Wuuuuuut??? DL lives in Calabasas???????? Yoooooo God is good,” he wrote.

The rant was brought on after an interview Hughley did with Vlad TV, where he states nothing but facts.

“He’s stalking her,” Hughley said. “You can think it’s cute. If it was my daughter, I’d do something about it. I don’t think it’s funny… If you want your family back, stop doing the s— you did that made her leave.”

The legendary comic clapped back in a tweet soon after, “Hmmm! Ain’t it weird that #Kanye supposedly has all these goons who will kill for him, but not one of them will get his prescriptions filled? Here’s a thought while you’re on your way to kill me in Calabasas, how about somebody drop by CVS and pick up his Xanax! Lol #TeamDl.”

West’s Instagram has since been wiped clean.

‘Snowfall’s’ Damson Idris Will Star As Famed NBA Agent Rich Paul In New Biopic

‘Snowfall’s’ Damson Idris Will Star As Famed NBA Agent Rich Paul In New Biopic

British hunk and star of L.A.-based drama Snowfall, Damson Idris announced during a March 3 interview on The Breakfast Club, about his new role as NBA agent Rich Paul. An upcoming biopic about the 40-year-old celebrity agent is said to be in the works, with Idris as its leading man.

“It is time we start cherishing black moguls and Rich is someone that people need to know,” said the Franklin Saint actor. “This guy has completely changed the game, and I’m happy and fortunate to call him a big brother, and I can’t wait to honor his story.”

Recently making headlines after engagement rumors surfaced with British phenom Adele, Paul famously represents LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Ben Simmons, John Wall, and Draymond Green, amongst other NBA superstars.

The acclaimed story of his meeting with long-time client James stems back to an airport in James’ hometown of Akron, Ohio. A 21-year-old Paul was said to be selling vintage sports jerseys out of his car when approaching 17-year-old James. Impressed by the Houston Oilers jersey of Warren Moon that Paul sported, the two struck up a conversation on their mutual love of sports. The pair kept in contact and the rest is history.

“It is going to be amazing, man,” Idris continued. “He completely transformed the game. I am just completely inspired by those people. I am fortunate to be in some really good circles, I am learning.”

TMZ caught up with the celeb agent as he was leaving LAX Thursday night and asked about Idris’ portrayal of him.

“I like Damson a lot. He’s a great friend of mine,” Paul said. “Damson’s great man, he’s doing a great job. That’s my brother.”

While there were no more details as to the start of production on the project, Idris was gleaming when sharing the news.

Practitioners of African Traditional Religions Stood In Solidarity With Singer Summer Walker After She Was Trolled On Twitter

Practitioners of African Traditional Religions (ATR) united on Twitter after a call to action by a popular social media personality called out trolls who were demeaning a photo of singer Summer Walker wearing all white online.

On March 10, a photo of Summer donning a simple white dress and white headscarf circulated on Twitter. The “Ex For A Reason” songstress looked radiant and happy as she shopped for healthy foods at the grocery store.

Folks with no home training began to share the photo with embarrassingly ignorant statements about her attire.

Jay Versace, a comedian, actor and musician who got his start by making hilarious videos on various social media platforms, posted a poignant tweet regarding Summer’s attire.

I know y’all are posting this hoping to make everyone laugh, but we gotta create space for black women to navigate their spiritual practice. This is a African traditional attire for a specific spiritual practice. Let’s decide who we wanna tear down and who we wanna uplift,” he wrote.

The 24-year-old priest of Obatalá upped the ante by urging Black folks who understood the significance of Summer wearing white to drop their flicks in the comments.

“Black folks wearing white thread, drop the pics.”

And did they. Although the singer didn’t directly say why she was dressed in that manner, people aware of certain practices spoke on her behalf.

Priests and non-initiates shared stunning images of themselves in white to show solidarity with the Summer and bring understanding about traditional African religions like Lucumi and Voudoun.

Many of these faiths were practiced in secret as practitioners risked their lives if they worshipped openly. As more Black people step into traditional diasporic and African practices, awareness and teaching are key.

Summer had the last word, though. She responded to naysayers and trolls on Instagram. The singer explained that she was, indeed, an iyawo who had permission to post the stunning photo from her godparents.

“Who’s the clown? The ones trying to reconnect to STOLEN practices? Or the ones who can’t see the importance of their own culture,” she wrote.

“Also, I know yawos aren’t supposed to post themselves, but I got blessings from my godparents to post myself for work. I wanna show how you can do your job and still be a yawo while still rejecting vanity. I’m doing this publicly to show how important it is to be in African religions / to de-stigmatize them.”

Former President Barack Obama Tests Positive For Covid-19

Former President Barack Obama Tests Positive For Covid-19

Former President Barack Obama posted on his Twitter page that he tested positive for COVID-19, CNN reports.

“I’ve had a scratchy throat for a couple days, but am feeling fine otherwise,” he tweeted and reassured the public that the former First Lady Michelle Obama tested negative for the disease.

“Michelle and I are grateful to be vaccinated and boosted,” read the post. “It’s a reminder to get vaccinated if you haven’t already, even as cases go down.”

Mrs. Obama posted on social media in March 2021, encouraging Americans to get vaccinated. The Obamas publicized that they both received their COVID-19 vaccines last year.

“When you can get the COVID-19 vaccine, I hope you do—Barack and I are certainly glad we did. It’s our best shot at beating this virus, looking out for one another, and getting back to some of the things we miss. Getting vaccinated will save lives—and that life could be yours,” said Michelle Obama, according to The Hill.

How the Obamas Took On Covid Precautions Previously

There’s no telling who in Obama’s orb has been around him with COVID, but he’s vaccinated and seems to be doing just fine.

The Obamas have always been cautious about the company they keep given the quick spread of the coronavirus and last year even scaled back Barack’s 60th birthday bash.

As previously reported, the Obamas were set to have a 475-person guest list, including big names such as Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney. An additional two hundred staff members were also scheduled to attend.

Prior to the cancellation, there were some health and safety protocols in place for the large party.

“This outdoor event was planned months ago in accordance with all public health guidelines and with COVID safeguards in place,” said Hannah Hankins, a spokesperson for Obama.

“Due to the new spread of the delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends.”

We can imagine how moving forward the Obamas will really have a smaller, tighter circle.
