Black and Latinx Company Uses Blockchain to House Homeless Families

Founded as a public benefit corporation, EquityCoin, Inc. created the first digital token on the blockchain backed by affordable housing. The company provides apartments for those in danger of becoming homeless while helping community-members build generational wealth through fractional real estate ownership.

According to EquityCoin founder and CEO Vernon J., “On any given night in America, there are over 500,000 people sleeping on the streets even though studies show that increasing access to permanent housing has the potential to reduce homelessness by 50%. This is the crisis of our time, and we need more public and private programs that can directly address this basic necessity.”

Vernon, a commercial real estate professional and investor with over 16 years of experience, and over $150 million in transactions, launched EquityCoin in January of 2021 after renting out one of his units in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, to a mother and son who were living in a shelter, according to a press release.

“I saw tears of joy in her eyes when I handed her the keys to her new unit. Never before that moment had I felt such fulfillment. From that point on, my purpose was clear – to help thousands of families in need of affordable housing,” says Vernon.

“When landlords step up to provide housing to the underserved, everyone wins. The tenant receives essential permanent housing, the city keeps families off the streets and property owners guarantee their cash flow through government rent vouchers.”

According to statistics from the Urban Institute, real estate is the single investment type that has created more wealth than any other asset class, while minorities in America often get excluded from this wealth-generating asset class.

“By marrying blockchain technology and affordable housing, we will revitalize urban areas from coast to coast, building a more healthy, livable and sustainable society. It’s not only important to do the work, but also to have the cultural empathy to provide a holistic approach to community-building,” states Beatriz Durant, EquityCoin, Inc.’s Director of Property Management.

“It was essential that we build a company with executives and board directors that actually represent the communities we serve”, Vernon declared. According to Deloitte’s Board Diversity Census Report, appointing women and minority directors provides benefits beyond just demographics. Diverse directors are “more likely than white men to bring experience with corporate sustainability and socially responsible investing, government, sales and marketing and technology in the workplace to their boards. These skills are on the forefront of growth in a post pandemic economy and less than 55% of board members in the Fortune 500 report having any one of these skills.”

Other core members of EquityCoin’s team include Akil Ash, a Venmo alumni who has helped develop some of the world’s most popular apps; Beatriz Durant, a leader in energy and environmental design with 14 years as a property manager; Michael McConnell, a community developer with 15 years of experience building social networks; and finally, Jey Van Sharp, a corporate strategy veteran, via MyÜberLife Consulting, who has helped grow brands like Diesel, Cartier, Pepsi, Neuehouse and UNIQLO.

“As an Afro-Nativo Venezuelan who grew up in Brooklyn, I understand the severe disenfranchisement of Black and brown people with regards to investing and homeownership. Ownership and freedom go hand in hand. More specifically, EquityCoin knows we will have no equality without equity. EquityCoin is excited to have an investment vehicle that provides a path for Black and brown people to own and have equity into the most fundamental asset in America: the home,” says board member Jey Van-Sharp.

To help streamline the tokenization process for other real estate operators, EquityCoin is also developing a secondary market called EquityShare that logically processes the terms and conditions of real estate equity contracts for execution on the ethereum blockchain. Currently, the average exchange period of real estate is 30 days, although EquityCoin aims to reduce that to 30 seconds.

Kansas City Man Awarded $900k After Wrongfully Arrested As A Teen

Kansas City Man Awarded $900k After Wrongfully Arrested As A Teen

Tyree Bell has reached a $900,000 agreement with the Kansas City Police Department after being arrested and detained for three weeks for a crime he didn’t commit.

The settlement comes nearly four years after Bell’s family filed a civil rights lawsuit in 2017 for what turned out to be an unlawful arrest against the then-15-year-old, KCUR reports.

“It was a part of a national disgrace that has been allowed to persist among white police for 40 years: cross-race identifications of Black males by white officers are often wrong,” Kansas City lawyer Arthur Benson said.

“And they are often wrong because too many police departments do not train their officers that all Blacks do not look alike and how to make an eyewitness identification that is not tainted by racial stereotypes. Tyree Bell was a victim of the Kansas City Police Department’s failure to address this national outrage.”

“It’s only money,” Bell told Fox 4 KC. “What I really want to see is for the police department to all come together and put an organization together for the Black community, for the community in general, so they can get to know everybody.”

On June 8, 2016, Bell was walking home from a relative’s house when police stopped him. The cops were responding to a call that reported three Black males playing on the corner with guns.

After police approached the suspects, they fled with one tossing his gun during the police pursuit. About seven minutes later, an officer noticed Bell walking about a mile away, talking on his cellphone. While Bell was considerably taller than the actual suspect, had on an entirely different outfit, and wore his hair differently, the teen was placed on a 24-hour “investigative hold.”

Bell ended up spending three weeks in jail without ever being charged. He was only released after a detective watched the patrol car videos from his arrest and concluded his clothing and appearance did not match the suspect.

Bell credited his family for being very supportive during the drawn-out legal battle. His mom passed away in 2019, and he wishes she was here to celebrate with him.

Jay-Z Scores $4.5 Million in Royalties From Parlux Fragrances Over Dispute

Jay-Z Scores $4.5 Million in Royalties From Parlux Fragrances Over Dispute

Jay-Z just scored $4.5 million in royalties from the perfume company Parlux after they dragged him to court for allegations that he breached a contract.

In 2016, Parlux launched a $68 million lawsuit against Jay-Z, accusing him of failing to uphold his end of a 2012 contract to promote his Gold Jay Z fragrance, Page Six reports. The three-week October trial ended with a jury ruling in Jay-Z’s favor.

While Hova’s lawyer Alex Spiro attempted to request the jury grant Jay-Z’s counterclaim against Parlux seeking over $4.5 million in alleged unpaid royalties, they ruled the fragrance company shouldn’t have to pay the billionaire rapper.

However, on Thursday, The Appellate Division, First Department ruled on appeals that were still pending during the trial and found that Jay-Z and his company “are entitled to summary judgment on their royalties counterclaim.”

“The record is clear: Parlux sold licensed products after July 31, 2015, but failed to pay royalties on those sales,” Justice John Higgitt wrote in court.

During the trial, Parlux accused Jay-Z and his S. Carter Enterprises LLC of breaking the agreement after he skipped attending the 2014 Gold Jay Z launch at Macy’s and failed to make promotional spots on Good Morning America and in Women’s Wear Daily.

“Parlux invested $29 million into that venture. It upheld its end of the bargain,” Parlux lawyer Anthony Viola argued in court. “The defendants didn’t uphold their end of the bargain.”

Spiro argued that the launch wasn’t part of the contractual agreement and claimed the rapper had a year to make the promotional spots.

“Why on Earth would Jay-Z put his name on one product and only one product in his entire career if he wanted that product to fail? Why?” Spiro asked. “And that’s a question they will never be able to answer because there is no answer.”

Techstars, founded in 2006, has found success far beyond Silicon Valley and is committed to the tenet that great ideas are everywhere, and all that’s missing is access and opportunity. To date, 32% of Techstars’ portfolio company CEOs identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC).

While this marks Techstars’ first accelerator in Oklahoma, the company has invested in four Oklahoma-based startups through its nearly 50 accelerator programs around the world. In addition, Techstars has had a presence in Oklahoma since 2010, hosting 18 Techstars Startup Weekend community events with 800+ attendees across Tulsa, Norman, Stillwater and Oklahoma City.

The Build in Tulsa Techstars Accelerator will support and invest in 10 early-stage startups led by underrepresented founders each year. Startups will participate in an intensive, 13-week program, receive hands-on mentorship, curated entrepreneurial content and programming, up to $120K in funding and access to Techstars’ vast network of mentors, investors, alumni and corporates. The inaugural program will kick off Aug. 8, 2022 and culminate in a Demo Day on Nov. 3, 2022. Applications for the 2022 class will be received Feb. 22, 2022 through May 11, 2022.

“Build in Tulsa is thrilled to partner with Techstars to bring this powerhouse program to Tulsa. Techstars’ network of mentors and track record for entrepreneurial success falls right in line with Build in Tulsa’s mission to elevate Black entrepreneurs by helping them build skills, networks, and financial capital,” said Ashli Sims, managing director at Build in Tulsa.

“This is one more sign that the spirit of Black Wall Street is alive and well in Tulsa. And we’re excited to work with Techstars to develop more successful Black-led startups.”

Barbie x Harlem’s Fashion Row Highlight Black Designers In High Fashion Editorial

Mattel’s Barbie and Harlem’s Fashion Row are making a statement in the name of New York high fashion.

In a fresh collaboration, the two are celebrating the works of three Black fashion designers with a new editorial for Black History Month.

The project will shine a light on the luxurious styles of Black designers Hanifa, Kimberly Goldson, and Rich Fresh. Barbie has created doll-sized replicas of the designers’ original looks in an ongoing effort to advance diversity and inclusion.

From her Fall/Winter 2021 collection, Hanifa’s look, designed by founder, Anifa Mvuemba, combines elegance and opulence. Her doll will model her blue ‘Brooklynn’ patent leather coat with a pair of thigh-high white boots. Mvuemba describes the opportunity as a “dream come true.”

“I’m so thankful for this opportunity to connect to my childhood, and I’m happy to see that little Black girls everywhere can see themselves starting with their favorite toy.”

Sister-duo Kimberly Goldson and Shelly Powell, founders of Goldson, will be showcasing a “Mari” multi-layered dress and the copper metallic “Lizzette” shorts from the Spring 2022 collection, dubbed “Blissful Evolution.”

“It is powerful of Barbie to use her platform to help bridge the gap on the way we look at people of various shades and from different backgrounds,” Goldson explained. “That made it important for me to partner with her to wear Kimberly Goldson for Black History Month. I chose a look that personifies the KG aesthetic, which is born of our Brooklyn culture and driven by luxury. She’s ready for Bed-Stuy!”

The last-styled look is the brainchild of designer Patrick Henry, known professionally as “Fresh,” owner of Rich Fresh. Barbie is outfitted in a tracksuit from his 2021 winter collection, which he describes as “luxeleisure.” Fresh believes in the power of representation and deems it necessary for creatives and kids.

“What drew me to the Barbie project the most is the level of inclusivity I saw in the Barbie universe.

“There’s Barbies for everybody. Deliberately, I knew this would be a project I could get involved with. It’s important for kids of all cultures to see themselves. Representation is vital. Involving Black creatives gives us the opportunity to contribute to the narrative. The significance of doing this during Black History Month is important, but what’s more important is the continued efforts to involve creatives of all backgrounds to help represent themselves within the Barbie universe,” Fresh said.

Wendy Williams Reportedly Considering Legal Action After Being Replaced By Sherri Shepherd

Wendy Williams Reportedly Considering Legal Action After Being Replaced By Sherri Shepherd

Wendy Williams is reportedly having a hard time accepting that her daytime talk show is officially canceled and being replaced by an upcoming show hosted by Sherri Shepherd.

The Wendy Williams Show was finally axed after weeks of mixed reports into the host’s medical condition. Now Sherri is set to debut this fall and fill the void that Williams leaves behind.

However, according to Radar, the hot topics queen is reportedly upset over the decision and is considering legal action.

“Wendy is on sick leave and has basically been fired. This isn’t right and Wendy isn’t going to take this,” a source told the outlet.

“She is considering legal action again her producers and is also deciding on what to do about Sherri Shepherd. Sherri was supposed to be a friend filling in for Wendy while she was sick, but instead, Sherri stabbed Wendy in the back. If anyone thinks Wendy is going to disappear without a fight they are a fool.”

Insiders say Williams is still keeping her ear to the streets and is reportedly ready to go to war with all involved in dethroning her from her daytime spot.

“Wendy has been reading the news where Chris Cuomo is suing CNN for $60 million and Megyn Kelly get $60 million when she was kicked out of NBC,” the source said. “Knowing Wendy, she will think she can get the same amount too. This is going to get ugly. She was hired because of her big mouth, well now that big mouth is going to bite the hand that fed her.”

On Tuesday, Debmar-Mercury Co-Presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein announced an official transition from The Wendy Williams Show to Shepherd’s upcoming Sherri.

“We all have a great love and affinity for Wendy, who grew into a true icon during her 12 incredible seasons as the solo host of a live, daily talk show dishing on ‘Hot Topics’ and interviewing celebrities.

“Since Wendy is still not available to host the show as she continues on her road to recovery, we believe it is best for our fans, stations and advertising partners to start making this transition now. We hope to be able to work with Wendy again in the future, and continue to wish her a speedy and full recovery.”

The official social media accounts for Wendy’s show posted cross-promotion of Sherri’s show, which insiders say threw Wendy over the edge.

“It was bad enough they canceled her show and gave Sherri her own daytime talk show which is set to take over Wendy’s time slot,” an insider told The Sun. “It was a total slap in the face for it to be announced on Wendy’s show and her platforms.”

The Caucasity: Black Woman Forced to Move From Her Seat Mid-Flight For Ticketless White Delta Passengers

Camille Henderson of California was on a returning Delta flight to the Bay Area after visiting family in Atlanta when she was abruptly asked to move to a seat at the back of the plane to satisfy two white passengers.

Claiming to have purchased first-class tickets for the flight, the white passengers could not produce said tickets to flight attendants, but while Henderson boarded the flight with a window seat in Row 15, upon arrival, she would be leaving the aircraft from Row 34.

“I just want them to acknowledge that they made me feel powerless and they can’t do that to customers moving forward,” she said in an interview with ABC7 News.

In the Feb. 3 flight, it all started with two white women sitting in a row next to hers complaining that they had the wrong seats; they apparently felt entitled to first-class even though there were no more first-class seats available.

Rather than attempt to understand the situation, their objections reached their peak after more than an hour into the flight, prompting Henderson to begin recording the exchange.

In true Karen fashion, the white women would not let up, and succumbing to their demands, the Delta flight attendants offered a solution that would end with Henderson being pushed back to the very last row of the plane, in another case of traveling while Black

In the audio Henderson captured of the encounter, someone is heard asking her, “Are you flying by yourself?” to which she replied that she was.

“There’s a seat back there in aisle 34. It’s an aisle seat,” said the person, and then the recording stops.

Embarrassed and fearful of retaliation, Henderson abided by the change in seating.

After no help from a Delta Airlines customer service representative following arrival, Henderson contacted ABC7 News. Only then did a Delta Airlines spokesperson make the following statement:

“We are looking into this situation to better understand what happened. Delta has no tolerance for discrimination in any form and these allegations are contrary to our deep values of respecting and honoring the diversity of our customers.”

Henderson expressed that she would “Never. Never again” fly Delta Airlines.

Madea Would Be Proud: Movie Mogul Tyler Perry Says He Likes Weed Edibles To ‘Take The Edge Off’

On Wednesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, movie mogul Tyler Perry gets real about how he finds calmness and shares an adorable story about his 7-year-old son’s unconcerned attitude about fame.

While the world-renowned actor, writer, and director is currently looking forward to the premiere of A Madea Homecoming, he candidly admits that he enjoys indulging in an occasional edible to “take the edge off.”

Perry said that an edible “every now and then” makes “me a calmer and nicer person.”

In 2014, Perry revealed in a GQ interview that he was diagnosed with sleep apnea. A man with many talents and responsibilities, he’s openly shared how his rampant mind can affect his sleep. In fact, he was even introduced to weed lemonade by a friend to help him sleep better.

“The first time I tried a joint, I was 40 years old, but nothing happened,” Perry said in 2018.

“I didn’t like the taste in my mouth. But about two years ago, somebody gave me a lemonade drink with the weed in it. I drank it, and I sat there, man, and all of a sudden, my legs started growing, and I was freaking out. I was holding my legs to keep ’em from growing. Then I thought I was swallowing my tongue, so I was holding my tongue…it was just crazy. Then the room was weird, and she was calling me on FaceTime, and I was hiding behind the camera… I’ll never do it again in my life.”

Although weed lemonade won’t cut it for Perry, he is just fine with an edible at his Wyoming home.

The Sistas creator also finds comfort in his son’s attitude about his fame. With two very successful parents, Aman Tyler Perry, whom Perry shares with former girlfriend, Ethiopian model and author Gelila Bekele, seems only interested in just being a kid. Perry tells the talk show host how much he admires the way his son “grounds everything.”

“I asked him, ‘Do you know what famous is?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, it’s when a lot of people know your name,’” Perry recalls. “So I said, ‘You know, by that definition, some people think I’m famous.’ He goes, ‘Really? Can we finish coloring now?’”

Aman may not be convinced, but his father continues to cement his status in Hollywood further.

In 2019, Perry was honored by The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce with the 2,675th star on the World Famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, in the category of Motion Pictures, in Los Angeles.

Robin Roberts Taking Leave from GMA As Partner Amber Laign Enters Chemotherapy

Good Morning America host Robin Roberts will take time off from the morning show to support her partner through her treatment with breast cancer.

On Thursday, Roberts posted a video on Twitter announcing her plan.

“My sweet Amber wanted me to tell you something that she’s been facing. At the end of last year, Amber was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Roberts said. “She had surgery last month and this morning will begin chemotherapy.”

https://twitter.com/RobinRoberts/status/1496810251072557058

“She and I have been together almost 17 years and have helped each other through our challenges like my journey with cancer. It’s my turn now to be there for her like she was for me,” Roberts added. “And that means I’ll be way from GMA from time to time like this morning as she starts chemo.”

Having faced her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2007, Roberts concluded her message with encouraging words to those facing challenges.

“We know many, many are facing cancer and other challenges—like my mama said, ‘Everybody’s got something,'” Roberts concluded. “Please know that you are in our prayers and hopefully we’re in yours, too.”

Roberts did add that Laign’s “prognosis is good.”

While Roberts beat cancer five years later, she was diagnosed with the rare bone marrow disease myelodysplastic syndrome, E! News reported. At the time, she took time off from the show while she underwent surgery to receive a bone marrow transplant from her sister, Sally-Ann Roberts.

September marks 10 years since Robert’s transplant surgery, USA Today reported. Laign was by her side when she celebrated the five-year anniversary with friends and family on the show.

“If you exercise, go to the gym, find a yoga studio,” Laign said at the time. “Do something so you can just release all of this energy that you have built up from being around and being the giver and giving, giving, giving.”
