As a leader in barbecue for more than 100 years, Kingsford remains committed to celebrating Black barbecue culture by launching its second year of the Preserve the Pit fellowship and doubling its commitment to investing in aspiring barbecue professionals.

In its inaugural year, Kingsford received more than 1,500 applications and awarded three barbecue entrepreneurs with an immersive industry fellowship. Due to the outpouring of interest and inspiring stories, the program was expanded to also include 10 small business grants. The Fellows received immersive training and one-on-one mentorship from industry leaders who share Kingsford’s commitment to honoring the history and culture of Black barbecue, according to a press release, provided to BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“We were overwhelmed by the response to Preserve the Pit last year and the incredible work done by our Mentor Network and Fellows,” said Ram Gopalakrishnan, marketing director at Kingsford.

“While the first year of the fellowship was a success, we know that many of the same systemic issues in the barbecue industry exist today which is why we’re doubling our investment in the Black barbecue community.”

In year two, Kingsford aims to name six aspiring barbecue professionals as Preserve the Pit Fellows. Ten deserving applicants will also be provided with grants to kick start their small businesses. Additionally, Pat Neely will be joining the effort as a new mentor alongside Dr. Howard Conyers, pitmaster and educator on the history of Southern barbecue, and the returning Mentor Network including Kevin Bludso, Devita Davison, Bryan Furman, Rashad Jones, and Amy Mills.

“Working with the first class of Fellows and mentors last year was incredibly inspiring and rewarding,” said Dr. Howard Conyers.

“I remain confident that through our shared passion, Kingsford, the Mentor Network, and I can continue to provide resources and business opportunities to help future generations thrive in the barbecue industry and keep them connected to the culture and history of the craft.”

To further honor the Black community’s contributions to American barbecue, Kingsford teamed up with artist-activist Brandan “BMike” Odums to create a special edition Preserve the Pit bag, which is available for purchase in Walmart stores nationwide. The bag titled “Pass it On” is inspired by the Black barbecue traditions that have been passed on from generation to generation and in hopes that the traditions continue to burn bright. The art has also been memorialized as a mural at the historic Black-owned Payne’s BBQ in Memphis, Tenn. A portion of the sales from the “Pass it On” bag will be reinvested into Preserve the Pit to continue to pave the way for future generations of Black barbecue enthusiasts.

Those interested in the fellowship are invited to review the eligibility requirements and apply now through Mar. 1, 2022, with the second class of fellows being announced in April. No purchase is necessary to apply or participate. Kingsford and its Mentor Network will select the 2022 class of Fellows based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, their connection to barbecue, contributions to the legacy of the Black barbecue community, and commitments to fueling its future. Through the immersive mentorship process, the Fellows will:

— Learn necessary skills with hands-on and immersive industry training

— Create lasting relationships with key leaders and experts in the industry

— Receive capital investment to kick-start their business

Annie Abrams, Arkansas Civil Rights Activist Honored With A Street Sign Named After Her

In celebration of Black History Month, educator and civil rights activist Annie Abrams received a special surprise from Good Morning America on Tuesday.

The front porch of her Little Rock home was filled with community members and loved ones as she was presented with a street sign named after her and a donation from Wells Fargo to the Annie Abrams Living Legacy Award scholarship at Ouachita Baptist University.

“Oh my god, I feel like a little girl having a birthday party,” Abrams said excitedly.

In 2010, Abrams was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame. This achievement recognizes her leading efforts in paving the way for generations of Black students in Little Rock. The Arkadelphia native is being celebrated for her contributions to supporting the “Little Rock Nine,” the Black students who fought to desegregate Little Rock Central High School in 1957.

As an integral part of the Arkansas Teachers Association (ATA), Abrams paved the way for generations of Black students in Little Rock. She campaigned to rename streets in Little Rock after Black leaders who made a difference in the city, including fellow activist Daisy Bates, Little Rock’s first Black Mayor Charles Bussey, and Martin Luther King Jr.

“Honey, listen, you can’t beat giving to God’s children! That’s all I ever done. Just giving!” Abrams said while receiving her donation prize. “I wasn’t a millionaire, but I gave away love.”

Launched in 2020, the Annie Abrams Living Legacy Award was established to honor Black students. Ouachita Baptist University selects students involved in “Multicultural Organization Reaching Equality (MORE)” to provide financial ease.

Family of Slain Black Man Demands Resignation of Missouri Coroner After Racist Social Media Posts Uncovered

Family of Slain Black Man Demands Resignation of Missouri Coroner After Racist Social Media Posts Uncovered

The family of 28-year-old Justin King is calling for the resignation of Crawford County coroner Darren Dake for allegedly displaying “preconceived biases” towards Black people.

The family’s lawyer Rod Chapel sent out a letter Wednesday to multiple Missouri state coroner oversight boards detailing how Dake’s social media posts are “overtly racist and dehumanizing,” STL Today reports.

In the letter that called for an investigation, Chapel pointed out Dake’s 2017 Facebook posts saying that the “KKK and BLM are the same racist coin.”

Chapel wrote that Dake’s posts “demonstrate his reluctance and preconceived biases which prevent him from completing his professional responsibilities in a way required by statute.”

King was fatally shot by his neighborhood inside of a trailer park in Bourbon, Missouri on November 3. A coroner’s inquest from Dake and Crawford County Prosecuting Attorney David S. Smith agreed the white shooter killed King in self-defense.

However, King’s family has always questioned why the neighbor was never charged. After hiring Chapel, an attorney and president of the Missouri NAACP, King’s family is calling out Dake for what they say is a blatant bias towards Black people.

Chapel accused Dake of discriminating against King’s family during the death investigation, describing his treatment of them as “antagonistic, unhelpful and overtly inconsiderate.”

“I have seldom seen a coroner act with such antagonism and callous disregard for victims of murder,” Chapel wrote.

Chapel noted how Dake failed to provide a photo of King’s body to the jury performing the inquest, but still had them sign a false statement saying they had seen photos of King’s body.

After the letter was released, Dake took to Facebook to double down on his claims, The Daily Beast reports.

“I will assure you that no county official involved in this investigation did anything inappropriate or used any form of bias during this investigation,” Dake said.

Dake even claimed that Chapel has racist “bias against law enforcement and Caucasian people.”

“Close inspection of my words will show that I was calling out ALL prejudice, including that of the hate group, BLM,” Dake said.

However, when it came to addressing allegations into the handling of photos for the jury performing the inquest, Dake stayed silent on that.

Chapel’s investigation request into King’s death is the second coroner’s inquest in six months to examine the suspicious death of a young Black man in Missouri.

6-Year-Old Alabama Boy Hailed A Hero After Getting Hit By Car While Saving His Sister

6-Year-Old Alabama Boy Hailed A Hero After Getting Hit By Car While Saving His Sister

A 6-year-old boy who was hit by a car while saving his sister was hailed a hero after returning home from the hospital.

Kayden Reid was hit by a car last month in Mobile, Alabama after saving his two-year-old sister Kaycee after she ran into the street.

“My momma called me a hero because I saved my baby sister,” Reid told Fox 10 TV.

Thankfully, Reid only had a few scratches after the accident. He enjoyed a rewarding ceremony from the local firefighters celebrating his heroism.

“I had to go get her before she got ran over by the car,” he said. “But that’s when the car hit me.”

The Mobile Fire/Rescue came to the party and gave Kayden a tour of the fire truck and a front-row view from the driver’s seat. Kayden appropriately wore his Superman costume for the special event.

“Thank you everyone for watching me,” Kaylan said.

Kayden’s mother Kayla Giles, recalled the accident and how fast her 2-year-old daughter was moving when she darted into the street.

“By the time everybody else saw [Kaycee] in the street, Kayden was right there … He ran right into the street to save her. But in the process of getting her out of the way, he got hit by the car,” Giles told Fox and Friends.

“We’re just thankful that we have both kids [home and safe] today.”

Public Information Officer Steven Millhouse spoke highly of Kayden’s heroism as a first responder.

“The family reached out to us after we had responded to the scene and after we transported him (to the hospital),” Millhouse said.

“He’s definitely a hero,” Millhouse said. “He’s got the heart of a hero.”

“But as a six-year-old young man, for Kayden to be able to recognize what was happening and to react the way he did … He’s definitely a beacon for our future,”

Actor Playing Uncle Phil in ‘Fresh Prince’ Reboot Aims to Pay ‘Tribute’ to James Avery

Adrian Holmes is set to reimagine the role of Uncle Phil in the upcoming The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot and plans to pay tribute to the late James Avery.

“You can’t step into his shoes,” Holmes toldToday.” “I’m just kind of creating my own. For me, it’s a tribute to him, a way of saying thank you to him and what he did for us.”

Avery died in 2013 at the age of 68 following complications from open-heart surgery. During The Fresh Prince reunion in 2020, the original cast paid homage to Avery by spotlighting the fatherly role he took on on and offscreen while sharing clips from his memorable moments on the show.

While the original sitcom took a lighthearted approach to tackle issues related to growing up in the ’90s, the reboot takes a more serious tone while addressing more hard-hitting issues.

For example, the role of Carlton, originally played by actor Alfonso Ribeiro, was known for his signature snap dance and sweater vests. But the reboot version has actor Olly Sholotan taking on the role while grappling with race and identity.

“I mean, I would say that honestly every aspirational Black person has dealt with that on some level, ‘Oh you talk white,’ or, ‘You act white.’ And I think as a community, we’ve never really asked ourselves, like, what are we saying when we make comments like that, how does that affect people and their development?” Sholotan said.

Jabari Banks is taking on the lead role of Will and says the reboot will give fans a much deeper perspective of the show’s original characters.

“It’s like the idea if you took all of the characters from The Fresh Prince, but you dove into each one of their journals,” Banks said. “And you got to see, like, the inside life of these characters that we all know and love.”

4-Year-Old Louisiana Boy Shoots Himself in Back Seat of Car While Mom Smoked Marijuana in Front Seat

4-Year-Old Louisiana Boy Shoots Himself in Back Seat of Car While Mom Smoked Marijuana in Front Seat

A 4-year-old boy in Louisiana fatally shot himself inside a car he was sitting in with his mother, who was smoking weed in the front seat with a friend.

Jarion Walker was killed on Saturday while sitting in the car with his two younger siblings and two adults, NOLA reports. The Sheriff’s Office said the two adults were smoking marijuana in the front seat when a  firearm was discharged inside the vehicle.

The shooting happened around 10:45 p.m. Saturday in the city of Westwego, a suburb of New Orleans. Walker was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. Authorities say Walker was playing with his father’s gun and fatally shot himself in the forehead, The Independent reports.

The other two children in the backseat were a 1-year-old, and a 22-month-old, who police determined were too young to have fired the weapon. Eventually, Walker’s mother admitted that she was smoking marijuana with a friend in the front seat when the firearm was discharged.

Authorities believe the boy located the weapon under the seat. The two adults say there were not aware the gun was in the car and that the boy had accessed it until they heard a gunshot, People reports.

An autopsy determined Walker died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the front of the head.

“These kinds of deaths can certainly be prevented,” Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said. “Gun safety is something that is apparent, and we should never leave a gun inside a vehicle for various reasons, this one being one of the most tragic reasons.”

Authorities have not made any arrests as they feel it is not appropriate at this time.

“They just lost a child, it certainly wasn’t intentional by any means. When we collect all the evidence, we’ll see where it goes,” Lopinto said.

Kanye West: ‘What Should I Do About My Daughter Being Put on TikTok Against my Will?’ Kim Kardashian Responds

Kanye West: ‘What Should I Do About My Daughter Being Put on TikTok Against my Will?’ Kim Kardashian Responds

Ye, formerly known as rapper and producer Kanye West, has upped the ante against his soon-to-be former wife, Kim Kardashian, with an Instagram post on Friday that took aim at the former reality TV star.

The billionaire asked his more than 10 million followers a simple question, “SINCE THIS IS MY FIRST DIVORCE I NEED TO KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO ABOUT MY DAUGHTER BEING PUT ON TIK TOK AGAINST MY WILL ?”

A post shared by ye (@kanyewest)

This is the latest salvo between the warring ex-couple as Ye called out Kardashian for allowing their daughter North to have a TikTok account where she posts funny videos, many times with her famous mom.

Although Kanye could have sent a cease and desist letter to Kim, he used the moment to use his followers as his counsel. Kardashian responded on her own Instagram Story earlier today:

“Kanye’s constant attacks on me in interviews and on social media is actually more hurtful than any TikTok North might create,” she said.

“As the parent who is the main provider and caregiver for our children, I am doing my best to protect our daughter while also allowing her to express her creativity in the medium that she wishes with adult supervision—because it brings her happiness. Divorce is difficult enough on our children and Kanye’s obsession with trying to control and manipulate our situation so negatively and publicly is only causing further pain for all. From the beginning, I have wanted nothing but a healthy and supportive co-parenting relationship because it is what is best for our children and it saddens me that Kanye continues to make it impossible every step of the way.”

This latest incident adds to the recent bizarre behavior Kanye has been displaying.

Last month, he accused his estranged wife and her clan of purposely not giving him the location of his daughter Chicago’s fourth birthday party. Several days before that incident was revealed, it was reported that Kanye was under investigation after reportedly being involved in a skirmish with a fan in Los Angeles.

Ye’s three-part Netflix documentary, jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, is set to premiere Feb. 16. The film made its world premiere at the virtual Sundance Film Festival. Right before the premiere, Ye took to Instagram to make a public request to Netflix to “get final edit and approval on this doc” before the streaming giant releases it.

Texas Woman Arrested and Charged After Killing Roommate by Sitting on Her Chest in ‘Prayer Position’

Texas Woman Arrested and Charged After Killing Roommate by Sitting on Her Chest in ‘Prayer Position’

A woman in Texas has been arrested and charged with killing her roommate after authorities say she sat on her until she died of suffocation.

According to KAUZ, Gloria Ann Jordan, a fugitive, was arrested and charged with manslaughter for killing her roommate Gloria Farmer last November. Police initially ruled she died from natural causes until a family friend thought otherwise. Authorities reopened an investigation, and it was discovered she was killed by suffocation.

The Wichita Falls Police Department alleges Jordan killed Farmer on Nov. 21. Police officers originally said A medical issue caused Farmer’s death after being summoned to Las Cruces Lane’s home. There was also a third roommate who occupied the house as well.

Law enforcement questioned Farmer’s other roommate, who allegedly told them Jordan might have been responsible for Farmer’s death. She told police officials that she did not say anything to them when Farmer died because she feared Jordan.

According to legal papers, the roommate stated that Jordan placed her hand on Farmer’s forehead and prayed while pushing her backward in an office chair until Farmer and the chair fell over.

Court documents state that Jordan then got on top of Farmer and sat on her chest as Farmer told her to get off of her because she couldn’t breathe. The roommate stated she tried to move Jordan off of Farmer, but she said that Jordan stayed in her position until Farmer stopped breathing.

The medical examiner determined that Farmer’s death was caused by mechanical asphyxia and said the manner of death was a homicide.

Jordan is facing other charges concerning another incident that took place on Nov. 25. Police allege that she slammed a woman’s head into the wall multiple times while yelling, “I rebuke you in the name of the Lord.” The woman who was attacked had reportedly refused to drive Jordan to Dallas for a medical appointment unless Jordan paid for gas.
