Mo’Nique Approaches Bonnet-Wearing Sister At Stone Mountain

Bonnet manager and actress Mo’Nique put actions to words when she reportedly stopped a sister wearing the highly-debated head covering at a park on July 3.

According to Twitter user @desfrenchy, the outspoken comedienne approached a woman wearing a bonnet as Mo’Nique hiked at Stone Mountain in Georgia. The woman posted what appeared to be a text message that read, “My dad seen Mo’nique at Stone Mountain today, and she was talking to some girl with a bonnet on.”

She then captioned the screenshot of the image with, “Not Mo’nique checking girls in bonnets in real life.”

The Twitter user also posted another video with the caption, “And she asked her to do the bonnet dance, whatever that is.”

From the looks of the video, the interaction was pleasant. Mo’Nique laughed, took pictures and danced with the women.

The woman also claimed her sister, Jade, had “given her the tea.”

Further down in the thread, Jade confirmed that Mo’Nique had the bonnet-wearing woman dancing a jig.

That didn’t stop Twitter users on the woman’s post from sounding off about Mo’Nique’s low-key obsession with respectability politics and minding other Black women’s business.

Since May, Mo’Nique has seemingly been on a crusade to rally troops on her respectability train. She posted videos and even a photo of unsuspecting bonnet wearers in an effort to persuade Black women to “do better.”

Glad to see the interaction was fun for all.

DMX’s Official Cause of Death Released, Fans Speak Out On Social Media

Fans reacted via social media following the official release of rapper DMX’s cause of death.

According to Hot New Hip Hop, an analysis of the rapper’s urine determined that cocaine was present in his body. He reportedly suffered a cocaine-induced heart attack. However, a coroner did not perform an autopsy. Police and medical professions listed a cause of death.

An identified person close to the rapper expressed that DMX was brain dead due to a drug overdose.

“His death literally happened immediately because the brain was dead,” explained the source. “So obviously, there were a number of days where he was on ventilatory support and so forth in the hospital. However, he was diagnosed brain-dead early on…He never woke up from [a coma].

The outlet also reported that despite prior speculation– DMX did not have COVID, nor was he vaccinated.

Fans on Twitter took to the social media site to express their grief. Many fans expressed that there was no need to release the results, and the rapper should be allowed to rest in peace.

DMX passed away on April 9.

Over 500,000 Sign Petition to Reinstate Sha’Carri Richardson for Tokyo Olympics

Fans outraged over Sha’Carri Richardson’s suspension from the Tokyo Olympics have signed their name to a petition.

MoveOn Civic Action,  a progressive lobbying group, launched a petition on Friday, July 2 to allow Richardson to participate in the 100-meter dash.

In less than 24 hours, the petition amassed more than 200,000 signatures, NewsOne reported. By Monday afternoon, Richardson’s support more than doubled. As of Saturday, July 10, the petition had garnered over 575,000 signatures. The goal is currently 600,000 signatures.

“The imposition of a penalty against a world-class Black, queer, woman athlete is powerfully and infuriatingly reminiscent of the way drug laws are regularly applied in the United States,” the petition reads. “Recreational marijuana use has been de facto legal for upper-middle-class white people for years—something more states are recognizing as they legalize marijuana for all people and consider how to repair the damage done to Black and brown communities by decades of the war on drugs.”

Earlier this month, the U.S Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) formally announced Richardson’s acceptance of a one-month suspension following a failed drug test. According to the news release, Richardson tested positive for THC, an active ingredient in marijuana that gets you high.

“The rules are clear, but this is heartbreaking on many levels; hopefully, her acceptance of responsibility and apology will be an important example to us all that we can successfully overcome our regrettable decisions, despite the costly consequences of this one to her,” said U.S. Anti-Doping Agency CEO Travis T. Tygart in a statement.

Sha’Carri Richardson’s Suspension from Olympics Stirs Debate

The prevailing rules for marijuana use among athletes have continued to fuel intense debates on social media. Even New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez chimed in last week to support Richardson’s reinstatement. She teamed up with other lawmakers to request that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) reverse Sha’Carri Richardson’s suspension.

“This punishment, which is not supported by any specific evidence, may prevent Ms. Richardson from competing in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics just after she inspired the country with her performance in the Olympic Trials last month,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter.

Last month, Sha’Carri Richardson became one of the fastest women in the country. She clocked an impressive 10.86 seconds during the women’ s 100-meter dash. After her victory, she informed reporters about her mother’s recent death. Her loss caused her to use cannabis as a coping mechanism.

“We urge you to reconsider the policies that led to this and other suspensions for recreational marijuana use, and to reconsider Ms. Richardson’s suspension,” the letter read. “Please strike a blow for civil liberties and civil rights by reversing this course you are on.”

U.S. President Biden weighed in on Richardson’s suspension saying  “the rules are the rules.”

“And everybody knows the rules going in, but whether it should remain that way is a different issue,” Biden told reporters. “I was really proud of the way she responded.”

Petition Supports Updated Marijuana Rules for Athletes

The MoveOn Civic Action petition makes it very clear where the organization stands in the marijuana debate.

“In no world is marijuana a performance-enhancing drug for runners,” the petition highlights. “And in more places in the United States and around the world, marijuana use is legal. The United States Anti-Doping Agency should drop their penalty and allow Richardson to compete!”

Richardson isn’t allowing this setback to keep her away from her dreams. She has her eyes set on becoming a world champion next year.

“I’m sorry, I can’t be y’all Olympic Champ this year,” Richardson shared in a tweet. “But I promise I’ll be your World Champ next year.”

16-Year-Old Jalen Lewis Becomes Youngest Player to Sign Million Dollar Pro Basketball Contract in American History

Rising basketball star Jalen Lewis is making history as the youngest player to sign a professional basketball contract in the country, according to The Athletic. The 16-year-old has reportedly signed a $1 million multi-year deal with Overtime Elite (OTE).

“Jalen is one of the most exciting young talents in the country, and we are humbled that he has chosen Overtime Elite to elevate his professional development on the court and academically while building his brand internationally,” said Brandon Williams, Overtime Elite executive vice president and head of basketball operations, in a statement. “This is a foundational signing for our league and another acknowledgment of the need and desire for our program.”

Jalen Lewis Signs Basketball Contract with OTE

Lewis has been gaining notoriety on the basketball scene for his five-star success.

The rising junior is a top basketball recruit from Bishop O’Dowd High School in California. He’s received recruiting interest from at least 12 schools, including Duke, Michigan, and UCLA. A 6-foot-9 center, Lewis is ranked by ESPN as No. 2 in the Class of 2021. He’s also listed as 12th overall by the 247 Sports Composite ranking.

Overtime Elite’s deal with Lewis was record-breaking. The young star’s multi-year deal with the Atlanta-based organization could be the beginning of new opportunities for high school students. So far, 10 players have already signed the dotted line. Jalen is the highest-ranked recruit to sign with the new pro league.

“I’d describe Jalen as an absolute difference-maker, a rare talent, with a combination of size, athleticism, good hands and ball skills that impact plays on both ends of the court,” said Kevin Ollie, OTE coach and director of player development, in a release. “There are no limitations to what he’ll be able to do in his career and through Overtime Elite, he’ll have the resources in place to help him reach his dreams.”

OTE Contract for High School Athletes

As part of the deal, athletes receive a guaranteed minimum salary of at least $100,000 per year. The athletes will also receive the following benefits:

  • Up to $100,000 for college tuition
  • Full health care coverage and disability insurance coverage
  • Bonuses and company shares

The New York Times noted that the players who sign with OTE will “forfeit their ability to play high school or college basketball.”

But that doesn’t sound like a deal breaker for Jalen Lewis. He’s passing up other offers to secure his spot as a professional basketball player with OTE. The league has raised capital to position top high school athletes for targeted opportunities through its robust training program.

Haitian Police Detain 17 Suspects in The Assassination of President Jovenel Moïse

Haitian police have detained almost a dozen and a half people in connection with the assassination of the Caribbean nation’s President Jovenel Moïse.

According to Euronews, it is believed that some of the assassins were made up of two Haitian Americans– James Solages, 35, and Joseph Vincent, 55. The other 15 suspects are reportedly from Colombia– with at least six of the detainees being alleged ex-military from the South American country.

During a news conference, Haiti’s Chief of National Police Léon Charles committed to bringing justice to all who participated in Moïse’s assassination.

“We are going to bring them to justice,” Charles said.

According to the law enforcement leader, three other insurgents had been killed, and eight more were still on the loose.

In conjunction with the Haitian government, the Colombian government is also investigating the involvement of its suspects.

“A team was formed with the best investigators … they are going to send dates, flight times, financial information that is already being collected to be sent to Port-au-Prince,” said Gen. Jorge Luis Vargas Valencia, the head of Colombia’s national police.

On Wednesday, the president was assassinated by gunmen who claimed to be DEA agents. Moïse’s wife, Martine, was also shot, but she was airlifted to a hospital in Miami, where she is being protected by security. The couple’s daughter hid and escaped injury.

With political unrest still prevalent in Haiti, Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph has declared a state of siege in the island nation that shares land with the Dominican Republic.

“In line with article 149 of the Constitution, I have just chaired an extraordinary council of ministers, and we have decided to declare a state of siege throughout the country,” Joseph detailed.

“They shot and killed the president and injured his wife,” he continued, assuring that their deaths “would not go unpunished.”

Moïse faced rising public outrage after the elected leader decided to forcibly extend his presidency past his five-year term, which ended on February 7.

Haitian citizens called for his resignation in February 2020 amid allegations of misappropriation of funds and accusations of making the already volatile financial affairs of the island worse.
