Black Quadruplet Brothers, Who All Attended Yale, Just Graduated

Black quadruplet brothers Aaron, Nick, Zach, and Nigel Wade, aka The Quad, aka The Wades, graduated at Yale together, but most importantly, developed their individuality.

The four small-town Ohio brothers did everything together and knew the same people for most of their childhood. However, when they were all accepted to Yale, their lives would be drastically changed, PEOPLE Magazine reported.

“In high school, we all knew the same people. So in a sense, that didn’t allow us to divert as much as we might’ve wanted to,” Nick told PEOPLE. “But in college, because there’s so many different types of people, and we had so many different diverse interests, I think we were able to carve our paths in our own way.”

The four siblings, all 22 years of age, were separated for four years as they pursued different majors and lived on different campuses.

Aaron earned a double major in computer science and psychology. Nick received a degree in political science and a minor in Arabic. Zach majored in chemical engineering and economics. Nigel completed his study in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology.

Since they graduated in May, the brothers were reunited at a local New Haven pizzeria with their parents as they waited to throw a graduation party at the home of a family friend.

Only on a rare occasion did the brothers run into each other. For example, Aaron and Nigel once had the same psychology course, albeit, it was a 2,000-person lecture that most undoubtedly incorporated online education.

“I wouldn’t just be walking on the street and just be like, ‘Oh hey, there’s my brother,'” Aaron said. “When that happened, I would be shook. I’d be like, ‘Oh my God, I completely forgot that you go to this school.'”

The experience away from home was a new one for the brothers. They had built a local reputation for having an inseparable brotherhood. However, the fork in the road was their different career paths.

The separation wasn’t too difficult on the brothers, as Nick put it, “knowing that family was just a stone’s throw away made their four years at the Ivy League school “feel more like home.”

“It’s a safety net that you already always know is there, and you know you’ll always have people to support you,” Nigel added. “There’s probably no one else on the planet who understands me better than my brothers. You know that there’s someone who’s going to be in your corner.”

While in college, Nick was involved in helping refugees and immigrants. Aaron was the musical director of a campus a cappella group. Zach was president of the National Society of Black Engineers, according to PEOPLE.

After college, the brothers look like they have a bright future ahead of them, though this time, they will be in different states:

Nick and Zach were hired at Goldman Sachs, but one lives in New York City and the other lives in San Francisco, respectively.

Nigel is doing a two-year fellowship studying Parkinson’s disease lab before applying to medical school.

Aaron, who attended a ceremonial graduation with his brothers, still has to complete a semester for his senior thesis before officially graduating in December. However, it is being reported that a job at Google in New York City is waiting for him.

“For a long time, it felt like we were all a singular collective unit of a protagonist in the same show,” says Aaron. “Now, oh my God. I just get to sit back and flip through the channels in each of my brother’s lives and be like, ‘Whoa, he’s doing this and this.’ It was just cool to brag like, ‘Oh, I have three brothers, and they’re all so smart and talented.'”

Ayanna Pressley Rallies Politicians of Color to Demand Investigation Into Mikayla Miller’s Death

Ayanna Pressley Rallies Politicians of Color to Demand Investigation Into Mikayla Miller’s Death

Democratic congresswoman Ayanna Pressley has put a group of Black and Brown politicians together to demand an investigation into 16-year-old Mikayla Miller’s alleged suicide.

Last month, Miller’s death was ruled a suicide after many speculated on f her hanging was a modern-day lynching, the Independent reports. But on Wednesday, thirteen Boston politicians led by Pressley sent a letter to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office asking to investigate if Miller’s death as a possible hate crime.

In the letter, the politicians said a “thorough, transparent, and independent investigation” would help “restore the trust that has been broken” by Ryan’s office and the local police, News One reports.

With Miller identifying as a member of the LGBTQ community, politicians want a review on it Miller “was driven to suicide due to bullying because of her race and sexual orientation.”

On April 18, Miller’s body was found hanging from a tree in the woods near her home within a mostly white Boston community. Though Miller’s death was ruled a suicide, politicians have been blasting the district attorney for not investigating the teen’s death with speed and transparency, Boston.com reports.

The politicians are questioning if a physical altercation Miller was involved in with five other teenagers on April 17 following a fight Miller got into with her girlfriend. Miller’s body was found the next morning.

“We question whether Mikayla’s death is a hate crime, especially if the independent investigation finds that she was driven to suicide due to bullying because of her race and sexual orientation,” the letter read.

Pressley had previously requested an investigation on May 5 and though the death was ruled a suicide, Pressley and other Massachusetts politicians think the reported bullying against Miller “made closure hard to find for Mikayla’s family and the community.”

“Any loss of life, especially that of a young person, is a tragic event and must be thoroughly investigated,” they wrote. “By commissioning an independent investigation into Mikayla’s death, we can prevent the further erosion of trust and help Mikayla’s loved ones find the healing that every family deserves after a loss.”

Along with Pressley, other politicians asking for an investigation include Suffolk County Sheriff Steven Tompkins, state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz; state Reps. Nika Elugardo, Brandy Fluker Oakley, Russell Holmes, and Liz Miranda; and Boston city councilors Lydia Edwards, Annissa Essaibi-George, Michelle Wu, Julia Mejia, Ricardo Arroyo, and Andrea Campbell.

George Floyd Honored With Larger Than Life 700 Pound Statue In New Jersey

George Floyd may not have been from Newark, New Jersey, but the city is honoring his contribution to Black America with a 700-pound bronze statue of him sitting on a bench.

On Wednesday, three days before Juneteenth, a public unveiling of the statue took place outside Newark’s City Hall, which pays recognition to Floyd after four Minneapolis police officers tragically murdered him.

As BLACK ENTERPRISE previously reported, the murder of Floyd and former officer Derek Chauvin’s guilty conviction has forever changed the discourse of how Americans talk about inequality, specifically police brutality.

Last summer, massive demonstrations across the world amid a global pandemic showed that people were tired of injustice against Black people enacted by law enforcement.

In Newark, which has a 50% Black population, Floyd’s serves as an inspiration.

The life story of the murdered Floyd plays out as the following, according to Vice News: former star football player of his high school fell on hard times, but he was rehabilitating back to society as a truck driver and security guard.

He leaves behind a 6-year-old daughter.

Artist Stanley Watts brings Floyd sitting on a bench to life. Watts was commissioned by actor and filmmaker Leon Pinkney as a donation to the city, according to NJ.com.

The statue’s purpose is to serve as a constant reminder of humanity and encourage social justice.

“The world needed a peaceful George,” Watts said during the ceremony. “The world needed him relaxed and chilling on a bench and that’s what we produced and we produced him larger than life because, after death, George will be remembered. That’s what memorials are. To remember and never forget why we changed today and tomorrow and for the rest of our existence on this planet.”

“George Floyd represents a lot more than himself at this juncture in history. Hopefully, when people walk by it and they see it … hopefully it inspires them to become active in the struggles that are happening right here in Newark and right here in New Jersey,” Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, who attended the event, said.

White Couple Who Pulled Guns Out On Black Lives Matter Protesters Get Weapons Confiscated

It took long enough, but finally the white couple who went viral last year after they were seen brandishing a pistol and assault rifle at a group of peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters, have reportedly had their guns taken away.

Mark McCloskey and his wife Patricia McCloskey pleaded guilty on Thursday to misdemeanor charges in the 2020 incident, HuffPost reports.

Patricia pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment and was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine while her husband pleaded guilty to misdemeanor fourth-degree assault and was fined $750. The couple also agreed to give up the weapons they pulled out on the social justice demonstrators.

It was in June 2020 when a group of Black Lives Matter protestors marched past their home en route to the Mayor’s house nearby. Mark and his wife came outside their homes with guns in tote out of fear for their safety they claimed.

The McCloskeys both work as lawyers and maintained themselves during their court hearing on Thursday. When asked if he recognized that his actions put others in harm’s way, Mark replied, “I sure did your honor.” After the hearing, Mark expressed his lack of regret for his actions.

“I’d do it again,” he said from the courthouse steps in downtown St. Louis. “Any time the mob approaches me, I’ll do what I can to put them in imminent threat of physical injury because that’s what kept them from destroying my house and my family.”

The couple’s lawyer expressed the same sentiments.

“Both of them understand that what they did is a violation of Missouri law,” the couple’s attorney, Joel Schwarz told NPR. “I think it was equitable and justice was served.”

“But,” he added, “if faced with a similar or same situation it’s something [Mark McCloskey] would do again.”

Last month, Mark announced his campaign to run for Senate in Missouri, CNN reports. He’s been receiving support from the Republican party with Missouri’s Republican Governor, Mike Parson previously saying that if the McCloskeys were convicted, he would pardon them.

‘March For Us 2021’ Celebrates Juneteenth In Chicago With A ‘4th of July Feel’

On Saturday June 19, March For Us will host its Juneteenth march and rally in Chicago, beginning at 10 a.m. near Jones College Prep.

A program is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Daley Plaza. According to a press release, the purpose of March For Us 2021 is meant to educate the younger generation about Juneteenth’s history, in addition to acknowledging the holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S.

Details also stated that Ashley Munson wanted to organize another event on Juneteenth to create a “4th of July” feel for African Americans in Illinois.

According to the March For Us’ website the event strives to build on what past civil rights activists previously established. Reform of systemic racism and police injustices were two mentioned topics.

The Chicago Tribune named Munson as March for US 2020’s lead organizer.

“This movement started as a result of Black people being fundamentally frustrated with how things are,” Munson said  in the 2020 interview. “You can’t address police reform without addressing the other things that affect Black people.”

Equity in Black communities was also a noted component in the first march, which was held last year on Juneteenth, according to The Chicago Tribune.

94-Year-Old Says Juneteenth Becoming A National Holiday is ‘Off The Chain’

94-Year-Old Says Juneteenth Becoming A National Holiday is ‘Off The Chain’

A 94-year-old woman is making media headlines for her ‘off the chain’ response to Juneteenth becoming a national holiday.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden signed a new bill into law that made Juneteenth a federal holiday, NBC News reports. The date commemorates the day in 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom through the Emancipation Proclamation.

Now that the entire country will recognize the significance of Juneteenth, Opal Lee, known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” is saying how “off the chain” the news is. Lee has spearheaded a decades-long campaign to make Juneteenth a national holiday, and now that it’s here, she’s using modern terminology to express her joy.

“I guess I thought it would be like this. But, to have it actually happen was, can I use the phrase the children use? It was off the chain,” Lee told CNN’s Chris Cuomo.

https://twitter.com/CuomoPrimeTime/status/1405710665046806529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1405710665046806529%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffpost.com%2Fentry%2Fjuneteenth-opal-lee-celebration_n_60cc5f7de4b0876cc93c49af

On Thursday, Biden got down on one knee to personally welcome Lee to the White House, Business Insider reports. Back in 2016, the elderly woman marched 1,400 miles from Fort Worth, Texas, to D.C. to advocate for Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday.

“I knew that the Senate had passed the bill, but I thought the House was going to take a lot longer,” Lee said. “And to find out that both of them had and I’m on my way to Washington, D.C. and going to be in the White House? I don’t know how to describe it. I’m humbled by it, I truly am. I’m so very, very grateful.”

While she appreciates all the praise, Lee made sure to bring attention to the countless others who worked to make Juneteenth a federal holiday including the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation founded by the late Dr. Ronald Myers.

“It’s not just one little old lady in tennis shoes who wanted Juneteenth to be a national holiday,” she said. “I have followed in his footsteps,” she said. “I’m so glad we’ve got it and so many people have worked at it, not just me. People all over have played their part to make Juneteenth a national holiday.”

Chrystul Kizer, A Black Woman Who Allegedly Killed Her White Trafficker, Can Now Claim Self-Defense

Chrystul Kizer, a Black woman who was charged with killing a 34-year-old white man who she claimed trafficked her for sex at the age of 16, has now been granted a chance to use a new defense strategy that could set her free.

A Wisconsin court ruled this week that Kizer, now 20, has been granted a chance to use an affirmative defense, which gives defendants a chance to lessen their actions or downplay the persecution. In Kizer’s case, she is taking the justification route, saying she was acting in self-defense.

Kizer was just a teen when she was charged with first-degree intentional homicide of Randall Volar III in June 2018, after she turned 17. She claimed the sex trafficking happened at age 16. Kenosha News reported that she was also charged with arson after burning his home down and grand theft auto for escaping in his car.

On June 9, Kizer was permitted to use her affirmative defense by the state District II Court of Appeals.

Previously, Kizer was denied the privileged of using an affirmative defense in March 2020 by Judge David Wilk of the Kenosha County Circuit Court.

“The state, through the Wisconsin Attorney General’s office, argued in their appeal that Kizer was not a trafficking victim and that even if she were, that the affirmative defense in a homicide case would only operate as a way to mitigate a first-degree homicide to a second-degree homicide,” according to Kenosha News. “The appellate court disagreed, saying that the affirmative defense would be ‘a complete defense’ to the homicide charge, not one that would simply mitigate it to a lesser charge.”

However, the court decision states that Kizer only may be able to use the defense, not that she can.

Prosecutors have offered Kizer a plea deal—allowing her to plead guilty to the murder charge with a  maximum prison sentence of 15 years. The alternative, if found guilty, Kizer faces the possibility of life in prison.

After her story become mainstream, more than 1 million signatures were collected to have the charges dropped, and she was released from jail in June 2020 after her $400,000 bond was paid. The funds came from the Chicago Community Bond Fund and the Chrystul Kizer Defense Fund.

Chrissy Teigen Hopes to Land Interview With Oprah Winfrey to Salvage Her Reputation

Chrissy Teigen Hopes to Land Interview With Oprah Winfrey to Salvage Her Reputation

Chrissy Teigen is reportedly doing behind-the-scenes damage control to repair her public image and looking for help from the media maven Oprah Winfrey.

The Lip Sync Battle host has been facing backlash for her past social media behavior that included wishing death on a then 16-year-old Courtney Stodden, as well as, allegedly cyberbullying Lindsay Lohan and fashion designer Michel Costello, Fox News reports.

But after seeing how well Winfrey’s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was received, Teigen is hoping the media mogul can help her regain support from the public.

Sources say Teigen is “being advised to go into hiding and lay low” but she is “in talks with Oprah to do a Meghan Markle sit-down type interview and tell her truth,” an insider claimed on the “Naughty But Nice” podcast.

While a number of outlets are hoping to secure interviews with Teigen, she reportedly has her eyes set on sitting down with Winfrey instead.

“Every news outlet in the world has contacted Chrissy about getting her first on-camera interview, but Oprah is her first choice.” The insider added. “If Oprah can forgive Chrissy, then so can the nation.”

Teigen recently issued out a lengthy apology via Medium where she opened up about the “VERY humbling few weeks” she’s had since the scandal hit the press. She admitted to being a “troll” while apologizing for her past actions.

“Not a day, not a single moment has passed where I haven’t felt the crushing weight of regret for the things I’ve said in the past,” she said in the statement.

I was insecure, immature and in a world where I thought I needed to impress strangers to be accepted,” she added.

As a result of the allegations, Teigen’s houseware lines were removed from major retailers like Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and Target, Outsider reports.

California Launches Digital COVID-19 Passport But Will Not Require Residents To Have It

California Launches Digital COVID-19 Passport But Will Not Require Residents To Have It

Reuters – California officials on Friday unveiled a website to access a digital copy of COVID-19 immunization records, though they stressed the U.S. state would not make it mandatory to carry the vaccine credentials.

Businesses will be able to verify digital “vaccine cards” by scanning a QR code on them using an app expected to launch this month. The nearly 20 million immunized Californians can access their data at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov.

“This is no different from someone’s vaccine records,” said California State Epidemiologist Dr. Erica Pan. “It’s an optional tool to use.”

California opened up from COVID-19 restrictions on Tuesday, with masks, social distancing and capacity limits no longer required at most venues for those who are vaccinated. But businesses are largely operating on the honor system and not “carding” people.

Other states have barred proof of vaccination as an entry requirement at shops and offices, calling such restrictions an intrusion on civil liberties including privacy.

California’s technology department developed the new website using technology known as Smart Health Cards, which originated at Boston Children’s Hospital. Walmart Inc this week also adopted Smart to enable people who got vaccinated at its stores to have an e-pass.

The approach contrasts with New York state, which paid IBM to develop a vaccine records app called Excelsior Pass as well as companion app for verifying passes. Over a million people had downloaded their records onto New York’s app, but few businesses have required it for entry.

California’s Los Angeles County has offered digital COVID-19 vaccine records for months through startup Healthvana. Millions of users have taken advantage, said Healthvana Chief Executive Ramin Bastani.

Users may experience glitches with California’s new systems, because names, birthdates or contact information could have been entered incorrectly at time of immunization.

Candace Owens Thinks Juneteenth, The Day Black Slaves Were Freed, Is ‘LAME’

Candace Owens Thinks Juneteenth, The Day Black Slaves Were Freed, Is ‘LAME’

Candace Owens was trending on Twitter last night once again to rail against another Black movement. However, this time, she despises Black Twitter for cheering for Juneteenth as an official federal holiday.

Last Thursday, the Black conservative firebrand, best known for being the antithesis of the Black community at large to please her predominately white and older audience, made a remark that many believe was in poor taste—that Juneteenth, the day slaves in Galveston, Texas, found out they were set free thanks to  the Emancipation Proclamation, is “lame.”

Related stories: JUNETEENTH IS A STATE HOLIDAY IN MASSACHUSETTS; COMMEMORATE FREED SLAVES AND GET A PAID DAY OFF

In Owens’ own words, “Juneteenth is soooo lame. Democrats really need to stop trying to repackage segregation.”

“I’ll be celebrating July 4th and July 4th only. I’m American,” she added.

https://twitter.com/RealCandaceO/status/1405613988637986816?s=20

Her misinformed tweet caught the attention of critics, which led Owens to make five follow-up tweets for damage control.

However, her attempt to clarify her statement came off as a disturbing rant. From talking about George Floyd’s murder, Black people celebrating “segregation,” how every “race was enslaved at some point,” and America does not discriminate against Black people because certain African and Caribbean born immigrants, who were not impacted by American slavery or the Jim Crow era, are prosperous.

Many people called out Owens’ insidious self-hate, but none other than Twitter user Conscious Lee did a great job exposing her in a minute-long video.

Lee’s video, which comes with citations keyframed on his green screen, points out that Independence Day was originally a segregated celebration because there was inequality between Black people and white people.

He also mentioned that the Union soldiers that made Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrender were Republicans.

The last big counterpoint from Lee shows how former President Donald Trump wanted to sign an executive order to make Juneteenth a federal holiday while he was in office. Of course, he lost his election to current President Joe Biden, who carried out his pursuit.

After getting massively schooled online, Owens tweeted that Black people have a low “emotional” IQ because politicians easily influence the community.
