Black Teen Graduates From College at 15, Plans to Pursue an MBA Next

Black Teen Graduates From College at 15, Plans to Pursue an MBA Next

Many great dreams children decide to embrace start with supportive parents who invest in their confidence and skills at home. A proud father named William Schlitz posted on Facebook about his teenage son’s accomplishment of graduating college at the age of 15, with plans to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

“So proud of my son Ian Taylor Schlitz for his hard work and dedication to his education. 15 and college graduate. Now off to an MBA program in the fall. Not sure which one yet, but that decision will come soon. Love you Ian. #IansDad,” William posted.

According to Black Media Daily, Ian’s journey to graduate early from high school and attend the University of North Texas started when his parents opted to remove him from public school to homeschool their son at the age of seven.

“There’s a lot of racist issues in these schools, especially from these teachers that no one holds accountable, and the children pay the price,” the elder Schlitz said to Black Media Daily.

Schlitz added that he and his wife (Dr. Myiesha Taylor) were unwilling to sacrifice their children’s mental health and well-being, just so they could say they lived in a good suburban district. Mediocre learning inside the traditional school setting was not an option, according to Black Media Daily. The family’s plan birthed remarkable results. Ian graduated high school at just 13 years old. He completed his undergraduate studies at 15, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Science degree.

In 2020, WFLA reported that Ian was 12 the first time he stepped onto Tarrant County College’s northeast campus. He says he was glad that he was allowed to excel.

“When I progressed on to college, it was almost like it’s where I belonged,” Ian said to WFLA.

The Dallas Morning News also said that Ian’s older sister, Haley, became the youngest person ever to attend SMU (Southern Methodist University) Law at just 16.

“I am so proud to be done with my undergraduate degree with high honors. I majored in Integrative Studies and selected Learning Technologies as my emphasis because I realize that e-gaming and electronic media can be very valuable tools to use in education. I am 15 years old, and will start my MBA Program in the fall,” Ian said on his Facebook page. “I am still deciding from where I want to obtain my Masters because, as my parents advise, I’m waiting to see what the money looks like. No sense in starting my business entrepreneurship in unnecessary debt from school. That wouldn’t be good business strategy! People often ask me “how did you do this?”

Ian shared that he certainly did not achieve his goals alone. The teenager shared that his mother outlined her educational strategy for him while highlighting one of her books called The Homeschool Alternative, and Turn On The Power.

21-year-old Makes History As First Black Female Officer at Local Police Department

21-year-old Makes History As First Black Female Officer at Local Police Department

The Livingston Parish News reported that Octavia Felder became the first African American female to ever serve in the Walker Police Department in Louisiana. Felder was approved by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen, upon the request of Walker’s Police Chief, David Addison. She was sworn in to protect and serve Walker, Louisiana’s, citizens at City Hall earlier this week, by Walker’s City Attorney, Bobby King.

Fox 44 News added that 21-year-old Felder developed a passion for policing after receiving a speeding ticket. She began volunteering and realized that working in the field was what she wanted to do. Additionally, Felder talked to Addison about being a reserve officer, according to BRproud.com. After Felder completed a series of tests, Addison remarked that they were proud to recommend her to the city council.

“My long-term goal, I want to be a homicide detective. So, hopefully, when I get the experience and training I need, I can use this along my journey,” Felder said during the FOX 44 news interview.

WGNO also reported that Addison said that it is good to help a young person Walker’s age to get started on a path that she may follow for the rest of her life.

“If one day she wishes to become full-time and we do have a full-time opening, and she completed her training, we’d be glad to have her full-time,” Addison also said in WGNO’s interview.

Felder explained that she never thought that she would be getting sworn in, but since she was standing there for that purpose, she is living proof that ‘they’ can do anything they want to do.

It is also noteworthy that WDSU News previously mentioned that Black women are blazing trails as lieutenant and sergeants within New Orleans’ Police Department’s (NOPD’s) 4th District in Algiers, although national numbers illustrate that very few women join police departments. Even fewer are Black women in command positions, according to the news station.

“The NOPD currently has 12 Black women serving in high leadership roles,” WDSU reported.

Felder took a historical step in another part of Louisiana, but it is also a meaningful one.

Youngest Person To Ever Interview A Sitting President Passed Away At 23

Youngest Person To Ever Interview A Sitting President Passed Away At 23

A brave young man, who became the youngest person in the world to interview a sitting president, has passed away at the tender age of 23.

His sister, Candace Hardy, told the Palm Beach Post that Damon Weaver died on May 1 from natural causes. In August 2009, a then-11-year-old boy from Pahokee, Florida, was thrown into the national spotlight when he was selected to interview former President Barack Obama as a student reporter.

Weaver, a pupil at Canal Point Elementary School, met with the commander-in-chief for 10 minutes at the White House in the Diplomatic Room.

It was Weaver’s candor and downhome charm that touched America’s and the leader’s hearts. The little boy asked Obama 12 questions ranging from education and bullying. In a touching moment, Weaver asked the president if he would be “his homeboy” after extending the charismatic man an invitation to Canal Point. Former Vice President Joe Biden had already accepted the little boy’s offer.

“Absolutely,” Obama replied, smiling and shaking Weaver’s hand.

Hardy spoke about the unforgettable moment her brother experienced, saying, “It was a one-in-a-lifetime experience. That’s the only way to describe it. … It was life-changing for him.”

She also described her brother as outgoing and well-liked.

“He was loved by everyone. No matter if it was a stranger, his mom or a family member, he was just a ball of light with so much energy… He left an impact on a lot of people.”

The experience with Obama led to Weaver interviewing other notable figures like Dwyane Wade and Oprah Winfrey.

In a 2015 interview with the  Palm Beach Post, the young man said, “Dwyane Wade was impressive, and he gave me good advice. He told me to stick with my dreams. And he told me that I’m a ‘cool’ person.”

After Weaver’s moment in the spotlight, he lived in West Palm Beach, where he graduated from Royal Palm Beach High School. He was pursuing his journalism dream via a scholarship to Albany State University in Georgia. Weaver was studying communications and was returning to the school for the fall semester.

Funeral services were held on Friday.

Thurman King Files Lawsuit Against A Michigan City and Police Force After Bogus Stop and Violent Arrest

Thurman King Files Lawsuit Against A Michigan City and Police Force After Bogus Stop and Violent Arrest

A Black driver is suing a western suburban Michigan city and its police force over a March 2019 traffic stop that landed him in jail.

According to News 8, Thurman King, 55, and his civil rights attorney Stephen Drew filed a lawsuit against the city of Rockford this past March. The news outlet reported that two years ago, King was falsely stopped by former  Rockford police officer Zachary Abbate for allegedly running a stop sign and not having lights on around his license plate.

Dashcam footage showed that King stopped at the sign, but the video didn’t show if the light was functioning.

The man realized Abbate was following him, and when he attempted to stop him, King continued to drive home, where he felt more secure.

“Mr. King, knowing he was a half a block from home, and not wanting, being an African American man, not wanting to stop in an isolated area, wanted to go to an area that was safer, which was his driveway,” Drew explained News 8.

Once the man stopped, Abbate accused the 55-year-old of smelling like marijuana.

“That’s not true,” the man can be heard saying on the video, according to News 8. “Why are you lying, man?”

King tried to enter his home, but Abbate grabbed him by the arm. A scuffle ensued, and the shady cop wrestled King to the ground. He was arrested and taken to Kent County jail, where he stayed for over 12 hours. A blood test given to King at the jail came back negative for alcohol.

“That should have never happened,” Drew said of the phony arrest.

Rockford police also tried to pin a litany of bogus charges, including felony assault, resisting arrest, obstructing a police officer, driving while intoxicated and having an open alcoholic beverage in his vehicle– on King.

The Kent County Prosecutor didn’t entertain any of the charges.

“That’s why we feel this was, number one, a false stop under false pretenses,” King’s attorney explained.

The city of Rockford issued a statement to News 8, saying, “While we do not intend to try this case in the court of public opinion, we disagree strongly with the claims as presented here. We intend to present a vigorous defense in this matter.”

Just pay the man and go.

Vanessa Bryant Accepts Late Husband Kobe Bryant’s Admission Into The Basketball Hall of Fame

On Saturday night, Vanessa Bryant, the widow of the NBA star Kobe Bryant, accepted her late husband’s admission into the Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2020, according to ESPN. The ceremony took place at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Bryant shared the honor with their daughter Natalia. After Kobe’s induction to the NBA Hall of Fame was announced, Bryant put Kobe’s jacket on her for a touching moment.

Bryant praised her husband during her poignant acceptance speech, saying that he was “still winning” even in death.

“I used to always avoid praising my husband in public because I felt like he got enough praise from his fans around the world and someone had to bring him back to reality,” she said. “Right now, I’m sure he’s laughing in heaven because I’m about to praise him in public for his accomplishments on one of the most public stages. I can see him now, arms folded, with a huge grin saying, ‘Isn’t this some s—?’”

Kobe’s idol, NBA legend Michael Jordan, stood by her side as she spoke. Jordan presented Kobe into the Hall of Fame.

The widow also expressed that Jordan was Kobe’s inspiration as a player.

“People don’t know this, but one of the reasons my husband played through injuries and pain was because he said he remembered being a little kid, sitting in the nosebleeds with his dad to watch his favorite player play,” she said as she looked at Jordan. “He could recall the car ride, the convos and the excitement of being lucky enough to have a seat in the arena. Kobe didn’t want to disappoint his fans, especially the ones in the 300 section that saved up to watch him play, the kids with the same excitement he once had.

“I remember asking him why he just couldn’t sit a game out because he was hurting. He said, ‘What about the fans who saved up to watch me play just once?’ He never forgot about his fans. If he could help it, he would play every minute of every game. He loved you all so much.”

Bryant, primarily, spoke about her husband with respect to the man he was– not just his game.

“Thank you for being the best husband and father you could possibly be. Thank you for growing and learning from your own mistakes,” she expressed. “Thank you for always trying to be better. Thank you for never giving up on us. Thank you for all of your hard work. Thank you for our family. Thank you for our daughters: Natalia, Gianna, Bianka and Capri. Thank you for working so tirelessly to provide for us and for giving us the most amazing life together. Thank you for waking up at 4 a.m. to train, for making it home to kiss me good morning and for dropping our girls off at school only to go to practice, come home and pick up our girls from school whenever you could.

Bryant also was sure to thank his haters.

“I don’t have a speech prepared by my husband because he winged every single speech,” she said. “He was intelligent, eloquent and gifted at many things, including public speaking. However, I do know that he would thank everyone that helped him get here, including the people that doubted him and the people that worked against him and told him that he couldn’t attain his goals.

“He would thank all of them for motivating him to be here. After all, he proved you wrong.”

Philadelphia Woman Unexpectedly Lost Her Job; Paid Off $169,000 of Debt in Less Than 2 Years

Philadelphia-based financial services professional Shaquana Watson-Harkness accumulated over $169,000 of debt. In an Instagram post, she mentions that she racked up over $20,000 of debt while traveling the world.

On New Year’s Eve 2018, Watson-Harkness made a resolution to stop using credit cards to fund her lifestyle. Although she admitted that breaking longtime habits was tough, she was willing to do whatever it took to take control of her finances.

Less than two years after making a commitment to become debt-free, she paid off $169,000, according to a CNBC Grow Acorns article.

While on her wealth-building journey, Watson-Harkness received shocking news. In November 2019, her employer gave her the infamous pink slip, leaving her without a full-time job. This was the third time that Watson-Harkness experienced a layoff.

“Always prepare for the unexpected and maintain multiple streams of income outside your day job,” Watson-Harkness told Black Enterprise. “The multiple streams of income could be passive income such as investments or working on your business as a side hustle.”

Philadelphia Woman Tackles Debt

As a professional in financial services, Watson-Harkness was the person people would turn to for help with their personal finances. She was happy to give advice but she was also ashamed because she was dealing with her own financial struggles.

Watson-Harkness had her first interaction with credit cards in college, swiping her first card to cover a spring break trip. She unknowingly disregarded one of the top rules of credit card use: don’t max out your card. She also underestimated the cost of student loans which turned into a monthly payment stretched out over a lengthy time horizon. Over the next 20 years, she continued to rely on her credit card for lifestyle purchases and increased her debt load.

But what doesn’t break you only makes you stronger. These lessons became the foundation for her success today.

“I have been able to successfully build an investment portfolio worth six figures while paying my six-figure debt,” Watson-Harkness shared on Instagram. “I have made mistakes, taken learnings, and eventually perfected my process.”

Spending Less and Saving More

Her first step towards financial freedom was to acknowledge her problems and then change her habits.

In February 2018, Watson-Harkness signed up for a money management course. As she started to shift her thoughts around spending and saving, she started to make progress in her finances. She created her first budget and debt payoff plan to jumpstart her goals.

Next, she tracked her expenses. She noticed that she was overspending by $3,000 a month. She adjusted her spending habits to avoid living paycheck to paycheck. One way she reduced her expenses was through the use of coupons and savings strategies, reducing her grocery bill from $800 to $500 a month.

Two months later, she implemented the debt snowball method. This strategy focuses on paying off the smallest balances first and then scaling up to tackle the larger debts. Within 15 months, she paid down $160,000 worth of credit card debt, the mortgage on a rental property, and student loans. She even started paying herself first and funding retirement accounts.

“The biggest mistake I made prior to creating my first budget was that I never paid myself first,” Watson-Harkness wrote in the CNBC article. “I always paid my bills and everyone else before I put any money in my savings or set anything aside for personal purchases.”

Helping Others Reduce Debt and Build Wealth

Watson-Harkness understands the impact that debt can have on a person’s life — especially when you lose a job. Fortunately, she was able to pay off the majority of her debt before getting laid off. Now, she’s committed to helping other women build a financial cushion.

In December 2019, Watson-Harkness decided to leverage her money management experience to start Dollars Makes Cents – – a financial education company that helps millennial women achieve financial independence.

“Today, through my side hustle business, I strive to help women understand that building wealth can be achieved with consistency, discipline, and having a vision about how you want to live your life in the future.”

Cobb County Mother Leilani Billingsley Killed At Job By Longtime Boyfriend

Cobb County Mother Leilani Billingsley Killed At Job By Longtime Boyfriend

A family in Georgia is grieving following the tragic circumstances under which its loved one died. Leilani Billingsley, a devoted mother and daughter, was killed by her boyfriend, Paul Sullivan, 38, in an apparent murder-suicide in Cobb County, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC).

Cobb County police spokesman Sgt. Wayne Delk told the news outlet Sullivan shot and killed the 27-year-old woman in the parking lot at the Riverside EpiCenter where she was employed, shortly after 11 a.m., before turning the gun on himself.

Police also speculated that the man assaulted Billingsley before he murdered her. Officers found their bodies on the scene.

“Based on eyewitnesses and video information obtained by detectives at the scene, it was determined that Mr. Sullivan had physically assaulted Ms. Billingsley before shooting her,” Delk told AJC. “He then turned the handgun on himself and shot himself.”

The investigation is ongoing.

Billingsley’s mother, Alyson-Renee Johnson, told AJC that she never expected that Sullivan would harm her daughter.

“I knew they bickered a lot, but that was it,” she explained.

Johnson confirmed that Sullivan and Billingsley had been a couple for four years. The pair lived with her in Austell, Georgia, a city about 20 miles west of Atlanta, and Billingsley’s 6-year-old daughter Queen-Archee.

Johnson alleged that she found about her daughter’s abuse too late from the woman’s friends.

Christopher Boyd, the general manager at Riverside EpiCentere, expressed his condolences to the family, according to AJC.

“Our hearts go out to the family of our beloved team member, especially the young child,” he said. “Many of our staff are grieving, and our attention now turns to loving and caring for those who remain.”

Johnson has created a GoFund Me to raise money to help pay for funeral arrangements for Billingsley. The fundraiser has raised almost $7,000 of its $15,000 goal.

The grieving mother had a critical warning for those whose family members may be in domestic violence situations.

“I’m asking all that if you or your daughter is in a bad situation– please help them. I feel like I failed my baby. My life is upside down right now.”

Billingsley’s funeral is set for May 20 in West Cobb Funeral Home.

A California Woman May Have Washed A $26 Million Winning Lottery Ticket Down The Drain- Literally

A California Woman May Have Washed A $26 Million Winning Lottery Ticket Down The Drain- Literally

An unidentified California woman may have washed a multi-million dollar lottery ticket down the drain– literally.

According to the Whittier Daily News, a woman purchased the $26 million winning SuperLotto Plus ticket in November at an Arco AM/PM in Norwalk, California. The publication reported that Thursday was the deadline to redeem the winnings. The deadline came and went, but nobody stepped forward with the ticket to claim the hefty prize.

Arco AM/PM employee Esperanza Hernandez told the Whittier Daily News that a woman who allegedly won claimed she put the ticket in her pocket and washed the pants. KTLA reported that the store manager had surveillance footage of the woman buying the ticket, and a copy of the video footage was turned in to California lottery officials.

According to the Whittier Daily News, a California Lottery spokeswoman said that the surveillance footage isn’t enough to prove who the rightful winner was. The woman was one of at least six possible people who had submitted missing lottery ticket claims in order to collect the $26 million.

“To claim a prize without a ticket, individuals need “compelling substantial proof (they) were in possession of the ticket,” the spokeswoman, Cathy Johnston, stated.

Johnston made it clear that anyone stepping forward to claim the massive cash prize would have to show and prove with evidence like a photo of the front and back of the winning ticket to collect the dough.

“Every claim of this size, if it is not turned in, will be investigated,” Johnston said.

If the winner doesn’t claim the prize, $19.7 million in cash will go back to the state’s educational fund.

It, clearly, pays to check all pockets when doing the laundry.
