22-Year Old Protester Shot and Killed During Protest In Omaha, Nebraska

22-Year Old Protester Shot and Killed During Protest In Omaha, Nebraska

Since the death of George Floyd at the hands of law enforcement officials circulated on social media in a graphic viral video, thousands of Americans have taken ou to the streets in protest, calling for the arrest of the officers involved and justice for the victim’s family. Over the weekend, many shared videos and pictures of groups across different cities engaged in physical altercations with law enforcement. Now things have taken a violent turn with one of the incidents leading to the death of a young protester.

Twenty-two-year-old James Scurlock was fatally shot outside of a bar in Omaha, Nebraska, by a white bar owner during the city’s protest against police brutality. Local station KETV reported that police officers responded after they heard gunshots where they found Scurlock suffering from a gunshot wound on the scene. He was taken to Nebraska Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

In a press conference on Sunday, police chief Todd Schmaderer said that the suspect has been detained in police custody but nothing was revealed about any charges that would be made.

“Any charging decision on that front will come from the county attorney’s office,” Schmaderer said according to KETV. “And he tells me that will be accompanied by a press conference.” No officers were involved in the shooting and the City councilman Ben Gray hopes the U.S attorney makes a decision on charges soon.”This is one of those tragedies that should have never happened,” Gray said.

Scurlock’s father spoke to Ohama World Herald about the recent incident, mourning the death of his son. “Last night I lost a son, my wife lost a son, my kids lost a brother,” he said.“His daughter lost a father. All because he decided to protest against racism. There’s a lot of speculation and rumors about how this happened. I don’t really care to be honest. My family wants closure and peace.”

Former President Obama Praises Protests, Condemns Violence

Former President Obama Praises Protests, Condemns Violence

By Jason Lange and James Oliphant

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday condemned the use of violence at nationwide protests over racial inequities and excessive police force while praising the actions of peaceful protesters seeking reform.

The vast majority of protesters have been peaceful, but a “small minority” were putting people at risk and harming the very communities the protests are intended to help, Obama wrote in an online essay posted on Medium.

Obama, a Democrat who served two terms as president prior to Republican Donald Trump’s administration, said the violence was “compounding the destruction of neighborhoods that are often already short on services and investment and detracting from the larger cause.”

The United States has been rocked by six straight nights of tumult over the death last week of a black man in Minneapolis, George Floyd, after a white police officer pinned him to the ground by kneeling on his neck.

Obama’s latest remarks came three days after his first comments on the Floyd case, which called for justice but did not mention the violent nature of some protests. His shift in tone on Monday came as some protesters have set fires, smashed windows and looted stores, forcing mayors in large cities to impose nighttime curfews.

Joe Biden, the likely Democratic nominee for president who served as Obama’s vice president, on Sunday also called for an end to the violence. “Protesting such brutality is right and necessary,” Biden said in a statement. “But burning down communities and needless destruction is not.”

Biden will face Trump in the Nov. 3 general election.

In his essay, Obama urged those seeking reform to embrace politics, arguing that electing new leaders on the national and local levels would bring about change.

“… Eventually, aspirations have to be translated into specific laws and institutional practices — and in a democracy, that only happens when we elect government officials who are responsive to our demands,” he said.

75% of McDonald’s Female Employees Have Experienced Sexual Harassment At Work: Report

75% of McDonald’s Female Employees Have Experienced Sexual Harassment At Work: Report

Starting in the spring of 2019, accusations about the culture of sexual harassment occurring at multiple McDonald’s locations started to become public.

In November 2019, The New York Times reported that a former employee reported inappropriate sexual behavior from her manager at a location in Mason, Michigan, to upper management. In the complaint, the employee, Jenna Ries, told authorities that the manager repeatedly harassed her between 2017 and 2019; including calling her offensive names and pulling out his genitals. While the location is owned by a franchisee, it was among numerous other cases that echoed the same sentiments from other female employees.

In a new report done by The Nation, over 75% of female McDonald’s employees have experienced sexual harassment while on the job. The eye-opening survey revealed that half of the respondents have received sexual comments and suggestive looks or gestures with another third saying they were touched or fondled while working.

Twenty-nine percent of respondents said they have been asked for sex by a co-worker with 22% reporting they were bribed with extra hours and even a promotion in exchange for sexual favors. Nineteen percent said they had received threats when they refused sexual advances with 12% saying the encounter ended in sexual assault or rape.

A McDonald’s spokesperson recently responded to the survey in an email to The Nation stating, “The crew and managers are the heart and soul of every McDonald’s restaurant, and McDonald’s and its franchisees are dedicated to ensuring that their work environment is free from all forms of discrimination and harassment. We’ve demonstrated our commitment to this issue by consistently offering various Safe and Respectful Workplace Trainings.”

“Without examining the Change to Win poll’s results or methodology in full, we cannot speak to it. However, considering their agenda, we must point out that the poll surveyed less than 0.1% of the individuals who work in a McDonald’s U.S. restaurants, which is hardly representative of the more than 800,000 people working at McDonald’s restaurants nationwide.”

Right-Wing Groups Are Reportedly Infiltrating George Floyd Protests To Start A Civil War

Right-Wing Groups Are Reportedly Infiltrating George Floyd Protests To Start A Civil War

The Boogaloo Bois and others are attempting to start a second civil war, egging on violence and vandalizing stores while others protest the police and their actions, according to reports.

According to Vice, the so-called Boogaloo Bois, a group of armed anti-government extremists, have reportedly shown up to protests. The term “Boogaloo” is a term used for an impending civil war or violent confrontation with law enforcement — the goal of these organizations.

The group has apathy toward law enforcement and are trying to position themselves within the protests against police brutality. The group’s approach to police brutality links the victims of the deadly standoff with federal agents at Ruby Ridge in 1992 to modern police shootings and other acts of violence against unarmed black men such as Micheal Brown and Ahmaud Arbery.

However, the group refuses to acknowledge police brutality is an issue that disproportionately impacts people of color.

Several reports of the group attending protests over the weekend were compiled by a Bellingcat investigative journalist in a thread, including an audio clip of protesters saying they wrestled a handgun from a Boogaloo Boi.

The Boogaloo hashtag has also made the rounds on social media flooding Twitter and Facebook with memes in the last couple of days. The memes support violence and discuss how the protests could result in the beginning of a civil war.

Some far-right and racist organizations are also encouraging their neo-Nazi followers to go to the protests and carry out acts of violence against African Americans to “exacerbate the ethnic tensions” and spark a “race war.”

Many of the protests that occurred over the weekend turned violent. Police shot tear gas and smoke bombs in order to disperse crowds from overwhelming them. However, many protesters fought back by burning police cars, defacing government property, and confederate monuments.

The protests are in honor of the memory of George Floyd who was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin Wednesday. Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck on for almost 9 minutes, while three officers stood by and watched.

Meet The 16-Year-Old Genius Whose IQ is Higher Than Bill Gates And Albert Einstein

Some of the most famous geniuses of our time have all had one thing in common—they all had higher IQ levels than the average person. Now, one British teenager and child prodigy is performing at levels higher than geniuses like Bill Gates and Albert Einstein. Meet Ramarni Wilfred.

Wilfred showed signs of genius potential from an early age. In pre-school, he was already able to read and write before other kids in his age group and by age 10, he had written a paper on justice theory that earned high academic acclaim and got the attention of an organization called MENSA, a high IQ society that caters to individuals whose IQ ranks in the top 2% of the global population.

!function(n){if(!window.cnx){window.cnx={},window.cnx.cmd=[];var t=n.createElement(‘iframe’);t.display=’none’,t.onload=function(){var n=t.contentWindow.document,c=n.createElement(‘script’);c.src=’//cd.connatix.com/connatix.player.js’,c.setAttribute(‘async’,’1′),c.setAttribute(‘type’,’text/javascript’),n.body.appendChild(c)},n.head.appendChild(t)}}(document);

In a report by the BBC, Wilfred scored higher than physicist Stephen Hawking and scientist Albert Einstein at just the age of 11 with a score of 162. His notable feat earned him the label of genius and is considered the smartest boy in London.

“I always remember driving him to nursery and he was telling me about something he’d seen on the news, and it was a very political subject,” his mom, Anthea Wilfred, said in an interview with BBC. “Later on that afternoon, I saw the topic on the TV and I thought, my 2-and-a-half-year-old has just been talking to me about this in the car. It was just bizarre.”

Despite his academic accomplishments, Wilfred is still a normal boy his age who mostly enjoys activities like playing with his dog and reading comic books outside of his schooling.

“It’s probably in place of me not knowing something, and from the ignorance is a desire to understand it, to know it,” he told BBC. “It’s just about finding your thing and finding what you are very interested in, what makes you excited, what you actually want to learn about.”

Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo Becomes Co-Owner of Sports Nutrition Company ‘Ready Nutrition’

Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo Becomes Co-Owner of Sports Nutrition Company ‘Ready Nutrition’

Milwaukee Bucks basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo has made his first investment by becoming part-owner of a sports nutrition startup, according to Ready Nutrition.

Ready Nutrition, which is one of the fastest-growing sports nutrition companies in America, had announced that NBA All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo has made his first brand investment with the company. He has an ownership stake and will give creative input at multiple levels of Ready Nutrition’s business, as well as having an exclusive endorsement and community role with the brand’s Ready Water and other sports nutrition products. Founder and President Pat Cavanaugh, former University of Pittsburgh basketball player and NFL football player, Los Angeles Rams’ professional football star Aaron Donald welcomed him as a co-owner.

“We are proud to have Giannis join our company as a teammate and co-owner in a role that will touch so many areas; from product development to cause marketing, community relations, and consumer engagement through our retail partners both online and in-store,” said Cavanaugh in a written statement. “As hard a worker as Giannis is, he is equally an engaged and caring person; most importantly always trying to get better and helping others get better. He’s our kind of guy. We are looking forward to combining our thoughts, interests, and activities as we grow together and build a unique, global sports nutrition brand.”

Milwaukee Public School students will receive 34,000 bottles of Ready Water and 34,000 Ready Protein Bars to be included with their daily meal program. Ready Nutrition will also be providing an additional 34,000 bottles of Ready Water donated to Milwaukee area healthcare workers to support their efforts.

“We have been presented with many, many brand opportunities over the past couple years; some from very large, well-known brands but I have found very few where I believed in the products,“ Antetokounmpo said. “I have to believe in the product. I use and believe in Ready’s Products.

“It’s also important for me to believe in the mission of the company; and Pat and Ready’s vision match my interests in health and nutrition. For me to get involved with the company at this level and build something special—it will give me the chance to learn and make an impact on a global level, not just here in the U.S. This fits everything I was looking for.”

The International Community Reacts To Police Brutality Protests Around The US

The International Community Reacts To Police Brutality Protests Around The US

Over the weekend, communities around the U.S have taken to the streets to protest the recent acts of police brutality and violence, including the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. Since then, social media has been flooded with videos and pictures of people calling out their local police department and government to arrest the officers and individuals involved and for them to be charged. While the issue of police brutality may be seen as an issue within the U.S., the global community is also reacting to the protests and showing its support for the individuals on the ground.

The world has been watching as Americans stand in protest against the acts of police brutality and it has prompted different communities to show their solidarity. In Iran, a candlelight vigil was held in honor of George Floyd who died after a police officer suffocated him by placing his knee on his neck. According to the Iranian Front Page, the candlelight tribute was held in Mellat Park of Mashhad in the capital of Khorasan Razavi province. There has also been a series of peaceful protests in large cities ranging from Auckland, New Zealand to Milan, Italy.

In cities like Tokyo, Vancouver, and London, these protests are not only in support of Americans against the recent acts of racial violence but also calling for justice against police brutality happening in their own communities as well. In Toronto, the protests coincided with the recent suspicious death of a 29-year old black woman named Regis Korchinski-Paquet who was allegedly killed when she fell from her balcony after police were called and they entered her home. The police argued they came in response to a report of domestic violence.

International governments have also been harsh in their criticism of the American government’s response to protesters. CBS News reports that Chinese government officials have publicly condemned the U.S. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian spoke out in a recent press conference about the protests stating that the protests “once again reflect the racial discrimination in the U.S., the serious problems of police violent enforcement and the urgency of solving these problems.” China hopes the U.S. will “safeguard and guarantee the legal rights of ethnic minorities.”

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan came out on Twitter to call out the U.S government calling their response a “racist and fascist” approach.

Police Officers March, Kneel, and Unite With Protesters Around the Country

Police Officers March, Kneel, and Unite With Protesters Around the Country

Police officers and protesters spent most of the weekend battling in the streets of more than 20 American cities, but some police officers chose to walk with protesters instead of patrolling them.

According to Forbes, police officers in several cities put their batons and gas masks away, choosing unity instead. Police officers in Michigan, New Jersey, California, and Missouri took a knee or walked with protesters to show their disgust with the killings of African American civilians.

In Camden, New Jersey, police officers walked with protesters holding a sign reading “Standing in Solidarity” and chanting “no justice, no peace.”

Former NBA point guard Rex Chapman posted a video of Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in Flint, Michigan, telling protesters that his staff will put down their helmets and batons to walk with them.

“Don’t think for a second that he (Derek Chauvin) represents who these cops are from all over the county and across the nation,” Swanson said in the video. “We go out there to help people, not do that nonsense.”

Police Chief Andy Mills, took a knee with protesters in Santa Cruz, California, “in memory of George Floyd & bringing attention to police violence against black people.”

Officers in Ferguson, Missouri, where Michael Brown Jr. was fatally shot by a white police officer in 2014, participated in a 9-1/2-minute kneel in Floyd’s memory, with cheers erupting from the crowd.

The protests began last Wednesday after the death of George Floyd, who was killed by officer Derek Chauvin who held his knee against Floyd’s neck for almost 9 minutes while three other officers stood by. He has since been arrested and charged with third-degree murder.

As the days have gone on, the protests have become larger and more widespread. Over the weekend protests against police brutality and racism have occurred overseas and in communities not known for protesting injustices in America.

Minneapolis Police Have Used Neck Restraints in Over 200 Arrests Since 2015, Leaving Dozens Unconscious

Minneapolis Police Have Used Neck Restraints in Over 200 Arrests Since 2015, Leaving Dozens Unconscious

According to an NBC News analysis of police records, Minneapolis police offers have a five-year history of using excessive force on hundreds of people, leaving 44 unconscious.

Since 2015, officers have rendered dozens of civilian’s unconscious using neck restraints. Meaning, the likelihood of the unfortunate case of George Floyd was bound to happen someday. As a result, people are beginning to question the legal and non-deadly ways to restrain someone.

A week after the death of Floyd, people are still searching for answers and protesting for justice to be brought expeditiously. While countless people have taken to the streets around the nation to advocate for black lives, others have begun to dig deeper into the Minneapolis Police Department.

NBC found that there was an unusually high use of excessive force. According to their research, Minneapolis police reported having used neck restraints over 237 times.

As it relates to the case of Floyd, “More than a dozen police officials and law enforcement experts told NBC News that the particular tactic Chauvin used — kneeling on a suspect’s neck — is neither taught nor sanctioned by any police agency. A Minneapolis city official told NBC News Chauvin’s tactic is not permitted by the Minneapolis Police Department. For most major police departments, variations of neck restraints, known as chokeholds, are highly restricted — if not banned outright.”

Minneapolis police records obtained by NBC also revealed, “Three-fifths of those subjected to neck restraints and then rendered unconscious were black. About 30 percent were white. Two were Native Americans. Almost all are male, and three-quarters were age 40 or under.”

While many police departments across the nation have moved away from using neck restraints while arresting people, Minneapolis officers have yet to follow suit. Ed Obayashi, an attorney and the deputy sheriff in Plumas County, California, serves as a national use-of-force expert and trains and advises police agencies.

In an interview with NBC, he shared that excessive force is bad business. “Any time you cut off someone’s airway or block blood flow to the brain, it can lead to serious injury or death as we have seen in so many of these tragedies. By using this tactic, it’s a self-fulfilling tragedy.”

As people seek justice for Floyd and others who have lost their lives, many are calling on officers to be retrained. Others are calling on departments with bad reputations to be defunded.
