Why Conservatives Are Vowing To Boycott Jeopardy Over Pronouns: Opinion

The problem that conservatives have is not with pronouns, it is with the idea that they have to respect and include people who may be different from them.

On the Feb. 26 episode of the popular TV game show Jeopardy, part of the program’s “Tournament Of Champions” competition, contestant Chris Pannulo selected a $600 clue within the category of “Speech! Parts of Speech!” The words Xem, Xyrs, and Xemself appeared on screen, to which Pannulo correctly replied, “What are pronouns?”

Host Ken Jennings replied affirmatively, “Those are pronouns, neopronouns.”

https://twitter.com/shamefulbella41/status/1762302308115677684?t=nHpkTEwEdEpCbrzSI-LvXw&s=19

This innocuous clue and response caused conservative viewers to collectively lose their minds and threaten to boycott the show, ostensibly over the view that the show was endorsing “mental illness.” In reality, the game show was just using an example of a practice of inclusion that has become more prevalent but is far from a new invention.

The list of pronouns has been consistently expanding since the concept was introduced in the 1970s, and according to the UC Davis LGBTQIA Resource Center, pronouns are “integral to who we are, and we share pronouns because we want to avoid assuming someone’s pronouns based on factors like appearance. By sharing our own pronouns routinely, we encourage others to do the same and demonstrate that we understand the importance of sharing pronouns.”

Mary Emily O’Hara, a communications officer for GLAAD, told NPR in 2021 that using someone’s pronouns properly indicates that you respect them as a human being.

“Pronouns are basically how we identify ourselves apart from our name. It’s how someone refers to you in conversation,” O’Hara said. “And when you’re speaking to people, it’s a really simple way to affirm their identity. So, for example, using the correct pronouns for trans and nonbinary youth is a way to let them know that you see them, you affirm them, you accept them, and to let them know that they’re loved during a time when they’re really being targeted by so many discriminatory anti-trans state laws and policies.”

The problem that the loud and vocal conservatives have is not with pronouns. It is with the idea that they have to respect and include people who may be different from them. For them, the use of pronouns signals an erasure of their core belief that there are only two sexes, a concept which science has not quite agreed with.

In 2015, Scientific American argued that reducing sex down to male and female is too simple to accommodate the spectrum that makes up genetic and biological sex.

According to a 2022 poll conducted by Pew Research, most Republicans (66%) claim that society has gone too far protecting trans and nonbinary people, while a minority of Republicans (14%) believe that using a person’s pronouns as they say the pronouns should be used is important to them.

Republicans are also more likely to believe that a person’s gender is determined by the sex they are assigned at birth. The poll also notes that 70% of Republicans believe that views on gender identity are changing too rapidly for their tastes.

When asked why, several respondents indicated their religious beliefs or a belief in an agenda pushed by the media. They also cited a desire to protect children, which has been a popular argument pushed by Republicans such as Florida Gov. Ron Desantis.

One respondent said of gender identity, “People now believe everyone should just forget about their birth identity and just go along with what they think they are. God made us all for a reason, and if He intended us to pick our gender, then there would be no reason to be born with specific male or female parts.”

Another responded to concerns about the media, saying, “News media, social media, and entertainment media companies are trying to change, and it seems they have been succeeding in changing public opinion on this issue for many people.”

Another person criticized schools, echoing the concerns of DeSantis, “It’s being pushed on society and especially on younger children, confusing them all the more. This is not something that should be taught in schools.”

‘Safety School’ Gave Bogus Certifications To Thousands Of NYC Construction Workers

Prosecutors charged Valor Security and Investigations for running a fraudulent safety school that falsely certified construction workers.

ABC News reports that a shocking case unfolded in New York as prosecutors charged Valor Security and Investigations and six of its executives with allegedly running a fraudulent safety school that falsely certified thousands of construction workers as adequately trained. The alleged scheme, uncovered by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, is believed to have resulted in severe consequences, including at least one fatality.

Ivan Frias lost his life in 2022 after falling from the 15th floor of a construction site on the Upper West Side. The indictment reveals that Valor Security and Investigations allegedly claimed to have trained 20,000 construction workers between December 2019 and April 2023, asserting they were fully trained in safety aspects after 40 hours of instruction. However, prosecutors argue that the company issued “thousands and thousands of safety certificates and cards without providing any training at all,” charging fees ranging from $300 to $600 for the fraudulent site safety training cards.

“Fraud has dire consequences. Fraud can mean life or death,” warned Bragg, emphasizing the gravity of the situation, especially in an industry where safety is paramount. Construction workers have been mandated by law to undergo safety training since 2017.

The charges include enterprise corruption for Valor Security and Investigations, its president, Alexander Shaporov, and five other employees. Nineteen alleged brokers, including two master plumbers, face charges of criminal possession of a forged instrument, which led to the suspension of the plumbers’ licenses.

Prosecutors revealed evidence, including text messages and emails allegedly quoting Shaporov instructing his employees to “make one up” for 40 trainees lacking the required safety cards. The indictment cites the case of Ivan Frias, where Valor allegedly falsely certified that Frias had completed 10 hours of safety training, including eight hours of fall protection.

New York City Buildings Commissioner Jimmy Oddo expressed outrage, stating, “I think every New Yorker has a right to be a little disgusted.” The department is considering revoking Valor’s license to issue safety cards. Oddo urged construction workers who received cards from Valor to seek retraining, highlighting the importance of addressing the potential risks associated with fraudulent certifications.

All defendants were arrested Wednesday morning, with court appearances expected later that day.

Black Workers Can Now Sue Tesla For ‘Hotbed’ Of Racism At Factories

A California judge has ruled in favor of Black Tesla Workers with plans to sue the company for racism in the workplace.

A California judge has ruled in favor of Black Tesla employees with plans to sue the electric car company for racism at its factories.

Although the ruling made in the Alameda County Superior Courts is tentative, Black workers for Tesla’s factories can begin proceeding with the lawsuits. According to Time, the disgruntled employees plan to sue based on their claims that the Elon Musk-led business did not protect them from racism in the workplace.

Judge Noel Wise stated that the workers at Tesla’s Fremont plant should be allowed to pursue the legal option. Their widespread issue with Tesla’s improper handling of discrimination issues led to the heated issue, first prompted in 2017 by a Tesla worker. Named in the court documents, ex-employee Marcus Vaughn sued the company for its factory production floor being a “hotbed of racist behavior.”

Upon the current ruling, Vaughn’s lawyer, Lawrence Organ, stated that the support among employees revealed just how severe the matter was.

“I think the numerous complaints over time show how Tesla failed to prevent racial harassment of its Black employees,” wrote Organ in an email to Reuters.

In an initial response to Vaughn’s claims, Tesla released a statement entitled “Hotbed of Misinformation.” The company not only denied any culpability but also expressed how they terminated three employees who engaged in the racist action. The statement also undermined Vaughn’s claims, emphasizing that he was a contracted worker.

“Marcus was not fired, he was on a six-month temp contract that simply ended as contracted,” the company stated on its official website. “His email to Elon was about his commute and Tesla’s shuttles, which was addressed as he requested. There was no mention of racial discrimination whatsoever.”

However, the recent court decision has landed Tesla back in the “hotbed,” with Judge Wise anticipating to split a potential trial into two parts. The first would be a jury trial, with the second phase for plaintiffs to sue for damages, but only if the jury finds Tesla guilty of such negligence.

Tesla also has a growing number of racially charged legal cases to handle, including from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and California’s civil rights agency.

FBI Raids Homes Of NYC Mayor Advisor Amid Growing Investigation

Another FBI house raid has been conducted on a staffer within NYC Mayor Erica Adams' office, this time being Director of Asian Affairs Winnie Greco.

The FBI is cracking down on its allegations of corruption surrounding New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Two Bronx homes of Adams’ advisor Winnie Greco were raided on Feb. 29.

Greco started as a fundraiser for Adams during his campaign for mayor. She has since served as the director of Asian Affairs, working as a liaison between Adams and the Asian community within NYC. Swiftly following the searches on her homes that Thursday morning, Greco was placed on administrative leave.

According to CBS News, the search was prompted by reports of Greco using her public position for personal benefit. The city’s Department of Investigations first investigated the accusations in November 2023, following claims from a city contractor who alleges she requested her home renovations to be conducted for free.

Multiple employees directly under Adams have been part of a probe launched by the FBI. Lead fundraiser Brianna Suggs’ home was raided in November 2023, as was the Mayor’s Director of Protocol for International Affairs, Rana Abbasova. During the raid, Suggs was questioned by federal agents but was not charged.

Politico reported that Suggs had an unusual financial payout with the Adams campaign, working on a commission to acquire funding. She has since been removed from Adams’ fundraising team and reassigned to another department within his office.

That same month, investigators seized several of Adam’s tech devices, including multiple cell phones and an iPad. The searches stem from a warrant on Adams’ suspected collusion with the Turkish government to obtain illegal funding from foreign entities to aid his campaign.

The mayor’s office has emphasized cooperation with authorities yet refused to comment further on the mounting accusations and house raids.

“Our administration will always follow the law, and we always expect all our employees to adhere to the strictest ethical guidelines,” shared a spokesperson. “As we have repeatedly said, we don’t comment on matters that are under review, but will fully cooperate with any review underway.”

‘I Think You’re Better Than Martin Luther King’: Donald Trump Endorses Mark Robinson For Governor Of North Carolina

Despite Robinson’s strong condemnation of LGBTQ+ rights as well as his past statements denying the Holocaust, Trump called Robinson 'an incredible gentleman.'

Donald Trump endorsed North Carolina’s current Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson for governor on March 2, fulfilling a promise Trump made months ago. The Associated Press reports that the former president also compared Robinson to Martin Luther King, Jr. at a campaign rally.

Trump called Robinson “Martin Luther King on steroids” before he added, “I told that to Mark. I said, ‘I think you’re better than Martin Luther King. I think you are Martin Luther King times two. You should like it.’”

Trump also listed Robinson and several other candidates he believed North Carolina voters should vote for during the state’s Republican primary on March 12. Trump said of the group, “They have my complete and total endorsement.”

While technically not a singular endorsement, the support from Trump and Robinson’s fundraising and support among the state’s GOP makes Robinson the front-runner for the governor’s seat.

Despite Robinson’s strong condemnation of LGBTQ+ rights, notably through his inflammatory comments that trans women should use the bathroom outside, as well as his past statements denying the Holocaust and amplification of conspiracy theories about Jewish people, Trump called Robinson “an incredible gentleman.”

Aside from Trump, Robinson has received an endorsement from the NRA. Robinson spoke at the NRA’s convention in Texas in 2022, for which he received criticism because it was held mere days after the school shooting in Uvalde. North Carolina state Democrats and 760 parents signed a letter calling for Robinson to cancel his appearance, which read in part: “We demand to know—how many children do you need to see gunned down, communities torn apart, and lives upended, before you’ll finally decide to put lives ahead of the gun lobby and actually do something to stop this senseless violence?”

The letter continued, “Your thoughts and prayers are not enough. Unless proven otherwise, your attendance at the NRA convention in Texas this week makes it clear: you, and the North Carolina Republican Party, are beholden to the NRA instead of protecting North Carolina children.”

Nike Opening America’s First Michael Jordan Store In Philadelphia

Nike confirms its expansion of "World of Flight" Jordan brand stores to the U.S., with its latest installment in Philadelphia.

Nike is expanding its franchise of Michael Jordan stores in the United States. The “World of Flight” store will open at a historic building in Philadelphia.

There are already stores in London, Tokyo, and Seoul, South Korea, among other international destinations.

Nike sent an application to the Philadelphia Historical Commission detailing its plans to blend the histories of the storied Jordan brand and the city. Nike released a photo detailing its vision for the establishment, which will open at a historic two-story building originally constructed in 1921. Sole Retriever re-shared the image on its social media.

Nike released a statement on its latest inclusion in the city, expressing its intention to maintain and elevate the area’s architectural and cultural history.

“Philadelphia’s Jordan the ‘World of Flight’ will deliver a timeless, thoughtful designed store that can contribute to the neighborhood and character of the streetscape,” stated the company. “The clean design language paired with the materiality and details used throughout achieves a look/feel that will convey a sense of history and permanence.”

The facility boasts 7,000 square feet of space, giving the shoe company plenty of room to curate a unique shopping experience as it introduces the “World of Flight” to American consumers. The expanding franchise will solely feature Nike’s Jordan-branded clothing, shoes, and other apparel. The basketball legend’s ongoing partnership with Nike has remained lucrative for the company since launching the first Air Jordan 1 in 1985. According to FourWeekMBA, the brand has secured billion-dollar revenues for the sneaker business, earning $5.2 billion for 2022.

Nike hopes its extension of “World of Flight” will bring more sales and success for the Jordan brand, beginning in Philadelphia. While it will be the first in the country, the store will now be part of an international cohort, with placements in other nations such as Italy, Japan, and Dubai. The store’s official opening date has yet to be announced, but sneaker fans await further details.

‘This is America. Land Of The Free, And Home Of The Medical Bankruptcy’: Former U.S. Surgeon General Calls Out America’s Healthcare System

Dr. Jerome Adams blasted America’s healthcare system after receiving an ER bill totaling $4,896.43 for treatment for dehydration.

Dr. Jerome Adams, a former United States Surgeon General, and current Purdue University Health Equity Initiatives Director, blasted America’s healthcare system after he received a bill from an ER facility totaling $4,896.43 for treatment for dehydration.

As Fortune reported, Adams was billed the total after receiving three IV bags of fluids and one lab test. Even with insurance, Adams received a total that led him to post his indignation on social media.

“Yes folks. THIS is America. Land of the free, and home of the medical bankruptcy,” Adams wrote on X before noting that he did opt for a payment plan to help manage the total cost incurred by the emergency facility.

Adams later told Business Insider, “If I’m in this situation with my knowledge and with my financial resources and with my bully pulpit, then the average Joe doesn’t stand a chance. The system is just broken.”

Adams continued, “There are many flaws in the system that would’ve caused other individuals to have gone into debt, have their credit ruined, or have to make choices about things they needed to do,” Adams said. “I’ve got three high schoolers, two kids heading to college. If I wasn’t in my income bracket, I might be making a choice as to whether or not to pay my medical bill or to pay my kid’s tuition.”

On March 1, KFF conducted a poll regarding the cost of American healthcare, asking American citizens their thoughts on their experience in the American healthcare system. According to their polling results, half of adults in America say that healthcare in America is difficult to afford, and 1 in 4 say that either they or a family member has faced difficulty in paying for healthcare in the past year. Additionally, the majority of those who are concerned about rising healthcare costs are the uninsured, low-income Americans, and Black or Latinx adults.

In 2019, as part of Nikole Hannah Jones’s The 1619 Project, a New York Times article suggested that a major reason why America has not adopted a single-payer system is because of race, or more accurately, racism. Jeneen Interlandi’s article traces the timeline of American healthcare policy from the Civil War antebellum era through the Obama era Affordable Healthcare Act. However, according to Evelynn Hammonds, a historian of science at Harvard University, “There has never been any period in American history where the health of Blacks was equal to that of whites. Disparity is built into the system.” Interlandi closes the article by noting that though the Affordable Healthcare Act helped with some of those disparities, there has never been a piece of federal policy that completely eliminated them.

For years, progressive politicians have been pushing for a single-payer system, but Axios cautions that the window to achieve sweeping changes in the healthcare system is closing rapidly. According to Democratic political strategist Chris Jennings, that is because the current political landscape will not allow it.

“The political environment does not allow for huge policy shifts,” Jennings said. “You can either deal with that by doing nothing or by taking an important step forward, and as much as you possibly can get, and laying the groundwork for larger progress when the opportunity arises.”

Jennings also said that though sweeping changes like Medicare For All will be a political impossibility going forward, that does not mean smaller, more incremental changes won’t have an effect. Jennings also called on the Democratic Party to take action to make health coverage more affordable for the average American.

“In terms of policy design, they’re not whoppers,” Jennings said. “But we should not downplay the significance of finishing the job — so wherever you live, Americans would have access to affordable health coverage. To me, that’s meaningful; it’s the long-unfilled commitment of Democrats.”

‘It’s 2024’s Equivalent To Having A Cross Burned On My Front Porch’: Black Man’s Work Truck Painted With Racial Slurs And Set On Fire

Eureka, California-based Archie Claybon lost around $60,000 when his truck was firebombed.

Business owner Archie Claybon’s work truck was spray painted with the n-word and set on fire in Eureka, California, in the early morning hours of Feb. 20.

Claybon was contacted by Eureka Police around 2 A.M. and told that his work truck was on fire. Claybon and his fiancée met officers at the end of the block.

He told the Outpost that he saw his 2004 Ford F-350 burning upon arrival. For all of his customizations on the car in advertisements for his tile business, it was more than $10,000 destroyed without considering the price of the truck itself. After the blaze began to die, Claybon and the authorities saw that racial slurs were painted onto the exterior of the car as well.

The Claybon’s Custom Tile owner said, “It’s Black History Month, and they put the n-word on my truck. I just feel like whoever did this, they’ve got some stuff wrong in their head, a whole other level of racism. I feel like it’s 2024’s equivalent to having a cross burned on my front porch.”

Claybon began considering who would want to harm him or his business, and no names came to mind. He admitted he was unsure whether it was a personal grudge against him or if it was someone who had an issue with where he had been parking his truck for the past few weeks.

Claybon explained that he’d received complaints in the past about his truck being parked in one spot for more than 72 hours but that no complaints about the location warranted what was done to his truck.

“A lot of people have asked me, ‘How would [the alleged perpetrator] know I’m Black?’ Well, my last name says it all,” Claybon said.

The small business owner took a financial hit from the fire, putting nearly $50,000 into his truck for “engine, transmission, four-wheel-drive, turbo, wrap, paint, rims, a full makeover.”

“It was basically brand new. The only original things are the leather seats.”

He has considered starting a GoFundMe because it’s unlikely that his insurance claim will cover the full value of his truck and the loss his business will take due to it being out of commission.

He decided there was another way that he wanted people to help.

“If anybody wants to help, tell your friends [about my business],” he expressed, “I tile, you smile. I’ve had so many bumps in the road; this is nothing a little blood, sweat, and time, and cars can’t fix,” Claybon said.

The Eureka Police Department is currently still investigating the firebombing.

Military Wife Arrested With Newborn In Car, Allegedly ‘Manhandled’ By Police Amid Medical Emergency Due To Name Mix-Up

Jacqueline A. Smith says she was initially denied medical attention while actively bleeding in custody.

Jacqueline A. Smith, a 33-year-old woman, is working hard to clear her name after she says she was allegedly wrongfully arrested due to a name mix-up while in Virginia Beach.

According to WAYV, Smith is the wife of a military member and mother of two young kids and was moving her family to another military base. The Feb. 16 incident occurred when Smith was stopped by law enforcement on the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. She was arrested while in the car with her newborn baby.

She told a news outlet that the police “manhandled” her so roughly while she was being arrested that her postpartum incisions began bleeding. She wasn’t told why she was stopped, and nothing indicated what prompted their alleged violent behavior.

“I just can’t even imagine how [it] went from a traffic stop to this,” Smith said. “All I kept saying out loud was, ‘Is this how you treat a service member’s wife? Is this how you’re treating a new mother?’”

Smith’s arresting officer was K. Brewer, and he transported her to Virginia Beach Correctional Center. She was checked in under the wrong name, Jacqueline Renee Smith, instead of Jacqueline Alcita Smith.

Smith recalled, “The whole ordeal was literally a nightmare. Every wrong turn that could have been taken, was taken. Three different agencies failed me. The Navy Police, the Virginia Beach Police Department, and the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office. Each one had an opportunity to operate in good faith, identify me, and use the systems they had in place. Instead, they were picking and choosing when to use my correct name.”

She continued, “They fingerprinted me. They took mugshots of me under this person’s name.”

Her father and husband had to work for two days to try to clear up the mistake. She was booked and held in lock up the entire time, actively bleeding.

“The actual process was so humiliating, so degrading. To have to strip naked, to have to spread and cough, all while I’m experiencing a medical emergency,” Smith told the outlet. She said that despite asking correctional officers multiple times for medical assistance, she was ignored for a long time.

“When I close my eyes, I’m just imagining what could have happened to me, just to be there alone and bleeding,” Smith said.

She was taken to the hospital eventually, where she claims that she was coerced into signing a medical release form after treatment. After being taken back to VBCC, she says she was put into the detox unit.

After being released, she must now work to correct all of the legal documents related to her arrest to get it expunged from her record. She attributed her strength to those willing to listen to her and be understanding. Smith said, “I’m just thankful that there are people who are willing to listen to my story and that if this does happen to you, don’t be silent about it.”

Rihanna Racks Up Millions After Wedding Performance In India

The wedding was held for the son of Mukesh Ambani, an Indian tycoon with a net worth over $100 billion.

Rihanna is still all about her dollar bills. After performing for a wedding event in India, the billionaire racked up millions and some pricey party favors.

Although the “Diamonds” singer has already dipped out of the country, she left not only in style but a few million bucks richer. According to TMZ, she was paid around $6 million to perform. The wedding was held for the son of Mukesh Ambani, an Indian tycoon with a net worth of over $100 billion. Of course, the legendary artist put on a show fit for a king–or the wealthiest man in Asia.

The Fenty Beauty founder was spotted ahead of the show with huge crates for equipment, preparing to sing again after returning to the stage at last year’s Super Bowl. The large shipment clearly paid off from the footage shared on social media, in which Rihanna donned a bright green dress as she began her set with lights, dancers, and a stage to captivate her audience. Baller Alert posted the clips to its Instagram.

Rihanna performed at the pre-wedding festivities for Anant Ambani and his now-wife Radhika Merchant with a massive crowd of 1,200 attendees. The privileged guests were able to hear her sing 17 of her classic hits, including “We Found Love.” Some other VIPs at the exclusive event were Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, Ivanka Trump, and Bill Gates.

Upon leaving South Asia, Rihanna posed for photographers at the Jamnagar Airport in Western India, holding a gift for her hard work. The interesting party favor depicted a close-up of an animal’s, assumed to be a reptile, eye alongside bold white text that stated, “Thank You.” What exactly the farewell present contained was left undisclosed to the public, but given the assumed budget for the billionaire family nuptials, it’s sure to be priceless.

The tabloid even speculates that Rihanna could have been paid over $10 million for her involvement. No matter the exact amount, one can assume the mother of two made sure they had her money.
