Elon Musk Declares ‘DEI Must DIE’ As Tesla Owner Calls To End Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Initiatives

Musk’s comments on DEI also come as the EEOC is suing Tesla Inc., which Musk owns, over concerns raised by its employees of widespread racial harassment.

Elon Musk communicated what appears to be behind the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion backlash in business, higher education, and other sectors of American society in a post to Twitter/X, which he owns.

According to Yahoo, Musk said in a Dec. 15 post, “DEI must DIE. The point was to end discrimination, not replace it with different discrimination.” Musk’s sentiments align with the recent efforts of conservatives to eliminate DEI positions in higher education, including a recent announcement that the University of Oklahoma would be complying with an executive order issued by the state’s governor, Kevin Stitt, that eliminated all diversity, equity, and inclusion offices at the state’s public universities.

In an op-ed for Time, Eddie S. Glaude Jr., the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor at Princeton University, discussed at length the attempts of the chorus of conservative voices to silence DEI, writing “Under the guise of a commitment to a classical liberal education, right-wing critics are pursuing illiberal ends that deny the value of diversity all together. They ignore or downplay the history of exclusion that has defined much of the history of places like Princeton, Harvard, or Yale. For them, meritocracy alone resolves historical inequity.”

The calls to end DEI have gotten progressively louder the more distance we have from the Supreme Court’s ruling declaring that affirmative action, which higher education institutions had practiced since the early 1970s, was a violation of the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause.

Musk’s comments on DEI also come as the EEOC is suing Tesla Inc., which Musk also owns, over concerns raised by its employees of widespread and ongoing racial harassment. As stated in the EEOC’s press release, “According to the EEOC’s suit, since at least 2015 to the present, Black employees at Tesla’s Fremont, California manufacturing facilities have routinely endured racial abuse, pervasive stereotyping, and hostility as well as epithets such as variations of the N-word, ‘monkey,’ ‘boy,’ and ‘Black b*tch.’ Slurs were used casually and openly in high-traffic areas and at worker hubs.”

According to the press release, the EEOC is seeking compensatory and punitive damages and back pay for the workers as well as an injunction aimed at forcing Tesla to change its practices so this kind of discrimination does not happen again.

In June, Tesla released diversity numbers publicly for the first time, according to USA Today, and the numbers show a majority of the staff to be men, particularly in the upper management and executive levels of the company, where men hold nearly 70% and 80% of positions, respectively. The auto industry, however, generally suffers from a lack of diversity as a deep dive from Wired into why so few women have been principal designers of vehicles illustrates.

According to USA Today’s analysis of the diversity reports submitted to the EEOC, despite the much-publicized commitments to diversity in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in 2020, inequality with regard to gender and race persists at many of the country’s most profitable and powerful companies, which indicates that the initiatives were largely PR stunts. According to DDI’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Report 2023, organizations that actively prioritize including employees of varying demographics often are more successful at both making money and retaining their talent. In addition, they are also unsurprisingly more likely to appear on the “Best Places To Work” list.

According to the DDI report, “In organizations where HR reported that they have a high-quality DEI program, there was a significantly higher percentage of women leaders at every level. The impact on minorities is even greater, as companies with high-quality DEI programs have nearly double the percentage of leaders from minority racial and ethnic backgrounds. Furthermore, these companies have nearly triple the rate of minority leaders in their high-potential programs.”

Texas Hate Crime Reporting Falls Drastically Short: Law Enforcement Faces Tough Questions

Alarming disparities in hate crime reporting highlight urgent need for accountability and training.

In 2001, Texas enacted the James Byrd Act, named after a Black man, James Byrd Jr., who was violently dragged to his death by three white men in 1998. This law mandates that all state agencies must report hate crimes to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which subsequently shares this data with the FBI. Nevertheless, a significant problem has arisen: many of these hate crimes are not being reported due to a disparity in how police departments in Texas define and classify hate crimes compared to the perceptions of those who are typically targeted by such offenses.

The Texas Tribune conducted an analysis of FBI data from 2022, which they used to conclude that 82% of all agencies that reported crime data to the FBI reported zero hate crimes. Compounding this underreporting issue is the fact that some departments that did report hate crimes communicated to the Tribune that they did so in error. According to the Office of Court Administration, only 36 of the thousands of hate crimes reported to the state have resulted in actual hate crime charges. Rachel Caroll Rivas, with the Southern Poverty Law Center, said this creates a larger problem for groups like the SPLC, “We can’t put resources into prevention or figure out how we can address these crimes if we don’t have the data.”

According to a report from the Anti-Defamation League, Texas led the nation in white supremacist propaganda in 2022, which goes hand in hand with the 89% increase in antisemitic attacks in the state since 2021. In addition to these attacks, the Human Rights Watch says that eight trans or gender non-conforming people were killed in Texas in 2021, which is the most of any state.

According to the Tribune, the process to report a hate crime is not cumbersome or complicated, all the police are required to do is check a box. In Texas, the two groups most likely to experience a hate crime are Black people and LGBTQ+ people, representing 35% and nearly 20% of reported hate crimes respectively according to the FBI Crime Report. As can be reasonably expected, big metro areas like Houston, Dallas, and Austin are responsible for the majority of the state’s hate crimes although they are not often associated with hate crimes in Texas. In East Texas, which encompasses Jasper, where Bryd’s life was taken from him, as well as Vidor, two towns considered by Black East Texans to be avoided if at all possible, law enforcement agencies say their reports of hate crimes were essentially clerical mistakes.

Andy Erbaugh, the public information officer for the Tyler Police Department, says that the severity of hate crimes requires additional scrutiny. “It’s a serious thing to say a crime was anti-Black when you don’t have any evidence it’s anti-Black,” Erbaugh said. “We are going to have a training for officers so they can understand when they need to put that there was a bias.”

Rural departments, like the ones in Jasper, Vidor, and Tyler, three East Texas towns, are generally less likely than departments in major metropolitan cities to report hate crimes. According to the Tribune, of all the hate crimes reported in Texas since 1991, only 7% of them came from counties with a population of fewer than 50,000 people. According to Jack McDevitt, the Director of the Institute on Race and Justice at Northeastern University who has trained police officers nationwide, “If it’s a racially motivated murder, [police] are going to investigate it that way. If it’s a minor thing and somebody says, ‘go back to your country’ and writes that on someone’s home, they’re gonna say, ‘maybe it was just kids.’”

McDevitt added, “You find that they missed a lot of the less serious events.”

McDevitt also said that hate crimes carry a specific weight and burden of proof that requires extra investigation. “If someone reports a theft like someone stole my wallet. There’s a wallet and it’s missing. That’s pretty easy,” McDevitt said. “If they say they hit me because I’m LGBTQ, then you have to find out if they really hit them and then you have to find out why they were motivated to do that. That’s harder to do.”

In 2018, the Justice Department met with law enforcement leaders and other leaders from around the country to find ways to help officers identify and investigate hate crimes. As a result of this meeting, in 2019, the Arlington Police Department expanded its hate crime reporting policy to include incidents in which no crime was reported. This simple adjustment to departmental policy led to an increase in not only documentation of hate crime incidents, but in reports of hate crimes to the Texas Department of Public Safety, as outlined in the James Byrd Jr. Act.

Cpl. Chris Holder, who developed the department’s eight-hour hate crime training course with Cpl. Jastin Williams told the Tribune that the course creates an open line of communication between the citizenry and the police, before briefly emphasizing that a hate crime is at its core, a crime against an entire community. “One of the big things that we talk about a lot when we teach this course is that a hate crime doesn’t just impact that individual,” said Holder. “It has a ripple effect.”

In 2004, six years after the murder of James Byrd Jr., his grave was violated. Racial epithets were discovered on his headstone. The Jasper Police Department arrested two white teenagers and charged them with criminal mischief, but declined to place hate crime charges on the teens, despite the clear use of language associated with racist hatred.

Louvon Byrd Harris, Byrd Jr.’s sister, said that their refusal to call a hate crime a hate crime amounted to disturbing her brother’s rest, saying, “To torment his grave is a continuation of hate and it should have been charged accordingly. He couldn’t walk in peace when he was alive, and now as (a) dead (man) he can’t even rest in peace.”

CBC Demands Corporate America To Fulfill Promised DEI Efforts To Close The Racial Wealth Gap

The Congressional Black Caucus has given companies a Jan. 31 deadline before they reevaluate their progress.

In a corporate accountability letter, the Congressional Black Caucus revealed that the CBC is pushing again for American corporations to “recommit” to diversify, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In the letter obtained by The Hill, they’re requesting for systemic changes to be made on account of a promised $50 billion in investments.

In the corporate accountability letter, the CBC requested that corporations send an explanatory update on their recent investments in racial equity and begin working more closely with the caucus to create more sustainable solutions to close the racial wealth gap that can be written into legislation.

The CBC wrote in the letter, “For years advocates have taken a front-row seat in this fight, working tirelessly to ensure the Black community prospers against these odds. It is past time to concentrate our efforts and equip our community with the necessary resources to close the racial wealth gap in America. The journey in front of us requires Corporate America to help drive an agenda that will power Black economic mobility.”

The CBC acknowledged that some efforts that major corporations have been making have been performative. They identified some companies hosting fake interviews for diverse candidates to give off the appearance that they’re making DEI efforts.

Due to the increase in reports concerning this, the CBC has given corporate America a Jan. 31 deadline to make marked improvements and share them before they release an encompassing report on where listed corporations are on a grade scale for how invested they are in DEI.

The persistent issue that Black Americans are facing is causing a widening in the racial wealth gap. Black people in the workforce are severely underrepresented in positions of high wages and are often not advanced up the chain as quickly as their white counterparts.

Democratic Reps. Steven Horsford (Nev.), chair of the caucus; Joyce Beatty (Ohio), first chair of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion; and Glenn Ivey (Md.), sat down in an interview with The Hill and elaborated that they hope the letter will spur companies to do better in the DEI apartment.

Horsford explained, “This is about the CBC, collectively, and the 120 million Americans that we represent, 20 million Black Americans, who are literally under assault and under attack when it comes to economic opportunity. We talk a lot about democracy and we will always fight for and uphold the provisions around democracy, including the right to vote, and one of those most fundamental rights is the right for economic justice.”

Beatty added, “When you put us in the room, it puts more diversity on not just race and ethnicity, but diversity of thought, diversity of background, diversity of experience, and it makes it better for the company.”

Chance will be a part of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts' class of 2028.

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ daughter Chance took to Instagram to celebrate a major milestone moment in her life. On Dec. 15, the 17-year-old announced that she was accepted into New York University.

Chance shared a collage onto her Instagram Story of the moment she learned she’d been accepted to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts as a student in the class of 2028, People reported. The aspiring actress shared that she was in the car with her mother, Sarah Chapman, when she received the acceptance email.

Along with the video of her reading her acceptance letter to NYU, she added several photos of herself visiting NYU and enjoying New York City. Chance posed on the campus and at the landmarks in the surrounding area.

The aspiring actress captioned the post, “NYU! Dreams do come true!! 💜💜”

In July, around college application season, 53-year-old Sean Combs shared an Instagram post where he gave his daughter a pink rose.

He captioned the post, “Words can’t describe how proud I am to watch you go after and accomplish your goals! GO CHANCE GO! I love you so much! @myfancychance.”

His daughter took to the comments and wrote, “Thank you for supporting my dreams. I love you daddy!!💖.”

As previously reported, Combs has been in the media for being sued by his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura for allegedly raping, sex trafficking, and trapping her in a domestic violence on Nov. 16. Although the pair reached a settlement one day after its filing, he was then named in several more lawsuits.

Combs finally spoke out explicitly about the lawsuits filed against him. He wrote in a statement obtained by PEOPLE, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy. Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday.”

Darius McCrary, arrested, Mexican borde

Darius McCrary Again Arrested For Failure To Pay Child Support

He has outstanding balance of $52,788.04.

Darius McCrary, otherwise known as Eddie Winslow from Family Matters, was arrested in November for a second failure to pay his court-mandated child support, TMZ reports. The outlet reported that McCrary was booked on Nov. 27 on one felony count of failure to pay child support. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the actor had an outstanding balance of $52,788.04 as recently as March 2019. McCrary pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, and the judge established that to bond out, he would have to pay $13,197.01 and agree to wear an ankle monitor.

Some states are considering eliminating the interest imposed by states on child support debts because they present an undue burden for Black men, and cases like McCrary’s represent the conservative argument against adopting that as a solution. For context on McCrary’s specific situation, in 2019, as a condition of his divorce from Tammy Brawner, he was ordered to pay $1,366 in monthly child support payments, which he is now accused of not paying.

According to TMZ, McCrary has claimed in the past that he only made $500 in a year, which rendered him unable to pay child support. Assuming McCrary’s claim is truthful, this places his child support drama into conversation with data from the Urban Institute that says Black men are sometimes assigned child support payments they are incapable of paying. In addition, according to the Center For American Progress, most of the money collected for child support goes to the state and not the families it allegedly collects on behalf of.

As part of their reparations plan, the California Reparations Task Force recommended in its report that the interest that the state charges be eliminated from back child support debt for Black Californians. According to The Telegraph, California’s task force did not call for the abolition of their debts in totality but noted that the exorbitant interest rates charged by the state had a disproportionate impact on Black men.

Meek Mill Overcome With Emotion And Tears Up As Pennsylvania Governor Signs Probation Reform Bill

Meek Mill had been on probation for the majority of his adult life.

Meek Mill’s battle with the probation system in the City of Philadelphia has finally come full circle. In 2017, the rapper pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge, effectively ending a 12-year-long case that stemmed from a 2007 drug and gun charge.

As NPR reported, Meek Mill had been on probation for most of his adult life, and the ordeal prompted him to step up his involvement with the REFORM Alliance, which named him, along with fellow East Coast rapper Jay-Z, as its co-chairs in July 2019.

According to a press release shared with BLACK ENTERPRISE, the organization recently celebrated the passage of Senate Bill 838 after five years of pushing the Pennsylvania General Assembly to reform its probation system.

Complex reports that at the press conference where Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed the bill into law, Meek Mill was emotionally overcome as he delivered remarks at the event.

“I don’t want to get emotional because it’s a lot,” Meek Mill said as he wiped tears from his eyes. “You don’t have to clap ’cause I’m at a point in my life like we all grew up in the streets, and we try to be better, but they labeled us felons and sent us back to jail. I had to fight against that the whole time to gain my respect and be who I am today, and I’m proud of that.”

Meek Mill’s original probation violation, which the organization says is a non-criminal technical violation, would not result in the same prison sentence he received in 2007 due to the bill. “The victory is a culmination of nearly five years of advocacy by REFORM Alliance and leaders across the political spectrum in Pennsylvania. In 2017, REFORM Co-Chair Meek Mill was sentenced to two to four years in prison for non-criminal technical violations of his probation after a decade-long battle with the justice system in Pennsylvania,” the release stated.

According to the press release, Meek reflected the magnitude of the bill’s passing. “I can’t explain how much this bill means to me,” Meek Mill said. “My experience on probation reflected millions of other stories that go unheard. So, when the world saw my case and the absurdity of sending people to prison for non-criminal technical violations, it sparked a movement. It’s an honor and a blessing to see this change come to my home state. I am deeply grateful to the lawmakers and advocates for their hard work over many years to get this done. Thank you, truly.”

In a statement, Gov. Shapiro said the bill proves that Pennsylvania’s state leadership cares about giving citizens second chances.

“We’re showing that we believe in second chances here in Pennsylvania – and when someone gets a second chance, that should be a real opportunity to start over and succeed,” Shapiro explained. “We’re taking common sense steps to remove unnecessary barriers for Pennsylvanians who want to rebuild their lives and meaningfully contribute to our communities. Because of this bill, more people will get to spend the holidays with their families, more parents will get that job they wanted, and more people will get back on their feet. They’ve served their time, they’ve paid their debt to society – we should do everything we can to help them succeed and thrive.”

Snapology

Former Pro Basketball Player Finds Success In Educational Franchise Industry With Snapology

The Snapology franchise, founded in 2010, provides educational play to children.

Child Enrichment programs are one of the fastest-growing franchise opportunities around. From tutoring, swimming, painting, and sports to math, robotics, and coding, parents are always looking to improve the lives of their children while entertaining them at the same time. Regarding education, S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) programs have become very popular in the past several years since the framework was introduced in 2006.

The Snapology franchise, founded in 2010, provides educational play to children using LEGO bricks, K’Nex, technology, and other interactive mediums, offering classes, camps, scouting events, birthday parties, playdates, and customized events. Ranked No. 1 in the Children’s Enrichment category and part of the Unleashed Brands family, Snapology believes that children are meant to learn through play.

Mike Robinson was born and raised in Chicago and went to school in Michigan. After school, he had the opportunity to play professional basketball in both Europe and South America for a few seasons. Following his sports career, Robinson became a financial planner with Edward Jones.

“I was a hotshot broker, but all along, I just didn’t feel like it was much of an inspiring career choice. Throughout this time, I had been working with kids at several basketball camps and programs, which was still my passion. When COVID hit in early 2020, and everything was suddenly shut down, I had no idea what to do next. It took months of prayer and reflection on my situation to realize that whatever it was I was going to do, I wanted to continue having the opportunity to work with kids,” Robinson tells BLACK ENTERPRISE.

Like many others, Robinson used the downtime the pandemic provided to explore other business opportunities.

“Franchising really appealed to me because I didn’t want to start all over again with something from scratch. There were so many choices! I narrowed down my search to franchise opportunities where I’d have the opportunity to continue working with kids. Soon, I stumbled upon Snapology,” he said. “What really got me was the affordability of the opportunity – under $50K. It checked all the boxes I was looking for at the time.”

In May of 2021, Robinson opened his first Snapology in Evergreen Park on the South Side of Chicago. In just two short years, he’s now running 25 to 30 programs every week, reaching anywhere from 400 to 5,500 children.

When asked by BE his biggest surprise regarding the business, Robinson shared his amazement at the high demand for their services from schools. Perhaps surprising to Robinson, however, statistics show that children have fallen behind in learning due to COVID-19 school closures. As cited in an ABC News report in early 2023, children lost out on about one-third of what they usually would have learned during the academic year from 2020 to mid-2022. This educational setback has prompted schools and school districts to actively seek external resources to supplement their existing curricula and help students catch up and excel. Snapology is among the programs making a substantial impact in this regard.

While building his Snapology franchise, Robinson faced and overcame challenges. “Just getting into the schools was tough. Our efforts through social media were slow, so we decided to go straight to the schools and introduce our programs.” His best advice for aspiring entrepreneurs considering starting a business or investing in a franchise is to research, have faith, work hard, and believe you offer the best service around.

Robinson is very happy with his choice of the Snapology brand. “The income is very nice. But what’s most important to me is how rewarding it is to be a Snapology owner and bring all of this wonder to kids. I get such satisfaction and joy from helping kids and watching them learn and grow. Many of the children we work with come from very underprivileged communities, which is an added benefit in the rewards category.”

He continued, “These programs are literally enriching their lives, giving them opportunities they may not otherwise have had. And that’s something I know a little bit about because that was my own story, too. I was raised very similarly. You know, when I was a broker, the reward was simply financial in nature, not emotional. But with Snapology, it’s both financially and emotionally rewarding. A real win-win. It’s meaningful, and that’s something you can’t assign a dollar value.”

With Robinson’s success so far, he’s already making plans to grow.

“The amount of training and support we get from Unleashed Brands is unmatched. And, it inspired us to expand our business ownership by adding another Unleashed Brands concept to our portfolio – Class 101, which opened earlier this year in June,” he said.

He added, “Class 101 is a national college planning franchise that helps high school students get into colleges that are perfect for them and qualify for higher amounts of scholarships and financial aid while doing so.  Now, our help, coaching, and mentoring of kids will go well past their early years into college preparation.”

IRS Sets Standard Mileage Rates For 2024 Tax Year

IRS Sets Standard Mileage Rates For 2024 Tax Year

The IRS has announced its standard mileage rates for the use of a car, van, pickup, or panel truck during the 2024 year.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced its standard mileage rates for the use of a car, van, pickup, or panel truck during the 2024 year.

According to IRS Notice 2024-08, beginning Jan. 1, 2024, the standard mileage rate is .67 cents per mile driven for business use, up 1.5 cents from 2023. The standard rate is 21 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes for qualified active-duty members of the Armed Force, which is down one cent from 2023 and 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

The standard mileage rate for business is calculated using an annual study of the fixed and variable vehicle operating costs, including depreciation, insurance, repairs, tires, maintenance, gas, and oil. However, the rate for medical and moving purposes is based solely on variable costs.

Meanwhile, the charitable rate of 14 cents has remained the same since the Clinton administration.

Tax reform changes made by the Trump administration in 2017 mean taxpayers can no longer claim a miscellaneous itemized deduction for unreimbursed employee travel expenses, making reimbursement plans more critical than ever.

Additionally, only members of the armed forces on active duty can claim a deduction for moving expenses under orders of a permanent change of station.

These are the 2024 tax year rates for the returns that will be filed in 2025. The 2023 standard mileage rates for tax returns submitted in 2024 can be seen here.

Under the Biden administration, the IRS has sometimes mentioned aggressively pursuing wealthy taxpayers and large corporations likelier to skirt tax regulations.

Earlier this year, the IRS announced it’s looking to hire 3,700 employees, including experienced accountants from across the country, to expand enforcement work focusing on large corporations and complex partnerships.

“This is another important step for the IRS as we work to transform the agency and make improvements,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a release.

“Our first wave of hiring focused on taxpayer service positions to help improve our phone and in-person assistance. This next wave of hiring will help the IRS add key talent like tax accountants to help reverse a decade-long decline of audits for the wealthy as well as complex partnerships and corporations. These new employees will be focused on higher-income and complex tax areas like partnerships, not average taxpayers making less than $400,000.”

How To Protect The ‘Happy’ In Your Holidays

Maintaining a healthy, happy spirit during the heist crucial

Originally published Dec. 27, 2017

’Tis the season of Christmas trees on every corner and a flood of sentimental sensory overload designed to fill your head with visions of sugarplums (or the stocking stuffers of your wildest dreams).

Yet on any given day we awaken to unsettling, sometimes devastating, news: missile test-launches with their threats of mass destruction; murders of churchgoers, schoolchildren, and music lovers; computer hacks that put your financial security and very identity at risk, even as you fret over how the latest news on healthcare insurance and tax reform might impact your ability to live your best life. This is not the stuff that “Joy to the World” is made of.

All the lights, tinsel, and merry-making in the world can’t put a shine on the dull ache that grows heavier with every miserable prompt from your newsfeed.

It’s enough to make you call foul-la-la-la-la as your peaceful, silent nights give way to anxious, sleepless nights.

“Disturbing things are going to happen in the world. They always have, but we didn’t always know. Our brains are not equipped to absorb relentless chaos,” says psychiatrist Dr. Janet Taylor. “Stress on the brain can have a cumulative traumatic effect, leading to depression, sleeplessness, anxiety, and addiction.”

So, what’s a not-so-happy holiday seeker to do? ”You can’t control what happens in the world,” says Taylor, who is also a self-care strategist, “but you can control the flow and quality of information you’re getting.”

Start by getting a jump on next year’s shopping, which will make your shopping far less stressful and way more satisfying. But before you load up the shopping cart for others, Taylor suggests that you take a page from the personal finance gamebook and give to yourself first. Here are her favorite gifts for the soul:

Put down your smartphone and think about how you really feel. You can’t get what you need if you don’t know what you need.

Seek more face time, then smile. “Our parents had more clubs and Sunday dinners where you could sit around the table together and unpack stuff, or get face-to-face comfort,” says Taylor. “Even if you look into the faces of strangers as you walk down the street and smile, you’d be amazed at the positive responses, and the positive feelings you get from them.”

Know when you’ve had enough and tune out, without feeling any guilt or shame. “Not knowing about another murder is not ignorance,” says Taylor.

Treat yourself—with care. Go ahead and indulge, but in moderation. Have the ice cream sundae, not the whole gallon; get a massage, but don’t max out your credit card on a spa trip you can’t afford. There can be a fine line between self-soothing and self-medicating. Do what’s going to make you feel genuinely good in the moment, and the day after, and the week after that.

“Be the change” can feel like a tall order, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be as simple as responding to a mean comment with a kind one, or to a selfish act with a generous one. If you want to change the conversation, just do it. Refuse to tear others down or share useless negative information. Or counter all the negativity you can’t control around you by making a positive change in yourself. Eating healthier, retooling your résumé, cleaning your junk drawer, and even making your bed can give you a sense of control and accomplishment when you feel overwhelmed.

“We are accepting that the world is uncertain and unpredictable,” says Taylor, “but our bodies aren’t built to be always on edge, and we don’t have to accept that constant stressfulness and anxiety.” Especially when comfort and joy are available for free.

Nicki Minaj Spreads Holiday Cheer With $50K Donation To Toys For Tots

Nicki Minaj announced the financial donation on a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live.

Nicki Minaj is ringing in the holiday season by giving back. In a Dec. 14 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the “Pink Friday” rapper donated toys and $50,000 to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.

Minaj expressed her gratitude to host Andy Cohen for allowing her to make the donation on WWHL, as all the toys would be distributed to children all across the county, People reports.

The 41-year-old presented a pink check to foundation representatives. She said, “Thank you to you guys for allowing me to do this on your show. It was something that meant a lot to me. I would like to donate $50,000 to Toys for Tots because I love this organization. I love what it stands for. It means the world to me, and God bless all the children in the world.”

The “Roman’s Revenge” artist handed over the check on WWHL to the three Toys for Tots representatives who appeared with her.

Toys for Tots’ N.Y.C. Coordinator Raul Pillco said, “I am incredibly speechless, especially for a program like this with Toys for Tots. It means the absolute world to be able to give back to the New York City community and just for the children across the nation. So, with somebody with such a superstar status like you, it means the absolute world.”

Later, during her WWHL appearance, Minaj opened up about her upcoming Pink Friday 2 World Tour, which will kick off next year. She expressed that her focus would be shifting to prepare for it. She said, “My focus on this tour will definitely be the new album — creating a world of that album and then sprinkling everything else around that. But of course, we’re going to still have the same fun with our throwbacks, you know, how we always do.”

She concluded, “I always make sure and perform my rap stuff, my pop stuff — everyone enjoys themselves. I make sure that all of my fans feel like they are well-fed at the show.”
