Florida Women’s Basketball Team Hires Atlanta Dream’s Rhyne Howard as Assistant Coach and Director of Player Personnel

A second-year WNBA player has recently joined the ranks of a college coaching staff during the league’s offseason.

According to the Florida women’s basketball team, Atlanta Dream player Rhyne Howard will join the Gators’ coaching staff as an assistant coach and director of player personnel. Howard has familial ties to Florida as her mother, Rhvonja (R.J.) Avery played for the university from 1987-91.

“When you really think about it, everything is full circle. My mom was a Gator herself, and I have been on this campus multiple times, but to actually be able to wear the orange and blue, I know it’s making her proud, I know it’s making everyone who thought I was originally going to be a Florida Gator proud,” Howard said in a written statement. “I always knew at some point that I would have the connection back with this school and just to be here and to be loved and to feel how much of a family it is already just confirmed all that.”

Howard is barely out of college herself, having attended the University of Kentucky and graduated in 2022. She became the first and only Kentucky player in program history to be drafted first overall by a WNBA team.

While at Kentucky, she became the basketball program’s top three-point shooter of all time and earned the SEC (Southeastern Conference) Player of the Year two times (2020 and 2021). She was also selected as the SEC Tournament MVP in 2022 and made the All-SEC First Team in all four of her years (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022).

Kelly Rae Finley, head coach of the Florida Gators, said, “It has always been important to me that we surround our student-athletes with people who can help equip them with the skills necessary to succeed as professionals on and off the court … Rhyne is humble, competitive, thoughtful, and driven … She is living many of our student-athletes dreams. Her knowledge of the game, combined with her ability to teach and connect with them on and off the court, will elevate our program.”

She had a successful second year in the WNBA. Although the Dream lost in the first round of the playoffs, she averaged 17.5 a game.

Last year, she was the first rookie in league history to record four blocks and four three-pointers in their debut. As an All-Star player, she also won the WNBA Kia Rookie of the Year and Associated Press Rookie of the Year in her first year in the league.

LeBron James’ Show ‘The Shop Uninterrupted’ Is Going On An HBCU Homecoming Tour

LeBron James, Maverick Carter, and company are taking The Shop UNINTERRUPTED on the road for a homecoming tour of HBCUs. The show will head out to Tennessee State University, Hampton University, and North Carolina A&T University during the fall. As co-creator Paul Rivera told Andscape, those universities were chosen for a specific reason to host the show’s live tour.

We selected these three schools for various reasons, including their impact and how they empower their students,” Rivera explained.

“From Tennessee State being the first HBCU to launch a hockey program, North Carolina A&T being the largest HBCU that graduates the most Black engineers in America, and Hampton’s rich history with housing the oldest museum of the African diaspora in the U.S., these schools are trailblazers in their own right.”

https://twitter.com/TheShopUN/status/1711426812251955381?t=C-p_-nVk735Sj43daPwUIw&s=19

The first stop on the tour will be Tennessee State on Oct 13, where Rivera will host and be joined by actor/comedian Kevin Fredericks, better known as KevOnStage. The taping will also feature music producer/songwriter Key Wane and actress/television producer Crystal Renee. The other stops at this point have only confirmed Rivera as a host; the guests he will share the stage with are to be announced. Tennessee State is proud to partner with the show. Tennessee State University President Glenda Glover described her excitement to Andscape, saying,

“We are pleased to be a part of The Shop’s HBCU tour and to kick off the initiative that will bring awareness to our institutions,” Glover said. “TSU has an amazing history, outstanding students and distinguished alumni, and we are excited to share this with the world, especially during our homecoming celebration.”

In addition to the taping, The Shop is partnering with AT&T to bring its Dream In Black Rising Future Makers Showcase to campus, along with Twix giveaways and a showroom model of the Toyota Grand Highlander that students can interact with.

Like Glover, North Carolina A&T Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. believes that the homecoming season is the perfect time and a perfect vehicle to showcase not just his university but all HBCUs, as he told Andscape:

“We’re excited about this project and all the great work that UNINTERRUPTED and LeBron James are doing to share HBCU excellence more significantly on a national stage,” Martin explained. “Having them here during the Greatest Homecoming on Earth will give America a chance to see what makes this celebration and our university so special.”

Rivera believes that the common thread uniting barbershops and HBCUs in the Black imagination will be evident when the show and its crew make their way to the chosen campuses. He hopes that the show will illuminate to the students who attend the live tapings that no one is truly an overnight success and that it takes work and some good fortune for people to arrive at their eventual destinations. Rivera believes in the power of HBCUs to shape brilliant minds, saying,

“HBCUs are increasingly becoming the first choice for some of the nation’s most sought-after talents,” Rivera explained. “Barbershops and HBCUs hold important roles within Black and Brown communities. Both are cornerstones in cultivating and educating the next generation of Black and Brown thought leaders.”

Former NFL Player Is Now A Math Professor At MIT

Nationwide —  Former Baltimore Ravens player John Urschel has made a remarkable career pivot after retiring early from the NFL at the age of 26. Urschel is now a math professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

While playing in the NFL, Urschel pursued his Ph.D. in mathematics at MIT. Surprisingly, he managed to publish six academic papers during his football career, a fact not widely known among his teammates and colleagues.

In 2017, Urschel earned a spot on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list for his outstanding work in mathematics at just 25 years old.

He was truly dedicated to both football and mathematics, demonstrating his commitment by juggling these demanding pursuits.

“I felt actually kind of guilty,” Urschel told Sports Illustrated. “I was actually kind of ashamed of myself. I was doing math while playing, but I always prided myself on doing what I wanted to do and not budging on things.”

In 2017, after three NFL seasons, Urschel retired to fully pursue his passion for advanced theoretical mathematics. In 2021, he completed his Ph.D. at MIT, focusing on matrix analysis and computations, with a strong emphasis on theoretical applications for real-world situations.

Now, Urschel was hired as one of the 16 new faculty members in MIT’s School of Science for the Fall 2023 semester. On his faculty bio page, he mentioned his interests in numerical linear algebra, spectral graph theory, and certain aspects of theoretical machine learning.

Moreover, Urschel reportedly aspires to increase diversity in the field of mathematics, where only seven percent of professors are Black. His goal is to inspire young Black students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

NBA, Michelle Beadle Says LeBron James

Former ‘NBA Countdown’ Host Michelle Beadle Says LeBron James Got Her Fired For Criticizing ‘The Decision’

Former ESPN NBA Countdown host Michelle Beadle believes Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James got her fired from the show because she was critical of “The Decision.”

In 2010, James was a free agent and deciding between signing with multiple teams, including his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat. James announced his decision during an hour-long program on ESPN titled “The Decision.”

James chose to go to The Heat, where he won two NBA Championships in 2012 and 2013 alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. James’ decision to leave the Cavaliers is regarded by many as the beginning of the Superteam Era, in which top NBA players decided to play for teams stacked with talent, seeking a championship, instead of sticking with the team that drafted them. Other super teams during that time included the 2014-15 Los Angeles Clippers, who had Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, and Blake Griffin, and the 2012-13 Oklahoma City Thunder, which sported Russell Westbrook, James Harden, and Kevin Durant.

Beadle appeared on the “Awful Announcing Podcast” earlier this month, where she said after she was fired by ESPN and replaced by Rachel Nichols, she began to hear whispers that she was fired due to James’ anger at the criticisms.

“I found out after (I was fired),” Beadle, who now works as a broadcaster for the San Antonio Spurs, said on the podcast. “In all the chaos that ensued after I left, all this other information started coming out. I kind of got wind of it as I was leaving. And then more stuff came out and I was just like, ‘What a crap show.’

Beadle followed up, saying the four-time NBA Champion is a powerful figure across the league.

“Yeah, you know, he’s (James) a powerful dude,” Beadle said. “I mean, there’s no getting around that he is an empire and an entity upon himself. All the respect for building such a powerful entity on a name and doing it well. So yeah, people are going to listen.”

This isn’t the first time Beadle has allegedly blamed James for getting removed from NBA Countdown. She made the same claims in late 2021. Beadle also added that Nichols may have had a hand in her departure from the show.

“I mean look, she’s ultimately not that powerful,” Beadle said about Nichols. “But I think some of the narrative that was being allowed to play out, specifically in the New York Post, at the time. I knew where it was coming from. We all knew where it was coming from.”

Nichols hosted the show until 2021 when she was removed after getting caught on audio making disparaging remarks about Maria Taylor after she was selected to host ESPN’s 2020 NBA Finals coverage.

Black Women-Owned Health Center In Ohio Caters To Black Mothers And Children

Black Women-Owned Health Center In Ohio Caters To Black Mothers And Children

A health center in Ohio, founded by two Black women, offers Black women a comfortable place to receive high-quality healthcare services.

Dàna M. Langford and Tenisha Gaines opened the doors to The Village of Healing to cater to the medical needs of their Euclid community.

“Our commitment is to offer healthcare solutions to our community with providers and healthcare that looks like them,” The Village of Healing website stated.

A staff of all Black women provides health services at the practice, including gynecology, obstetrics, mental health services, vaccines, and telehealth.

“It feels good to work with my people, to be able to help my people and be able to relate to my people at the same time,” said nurse practitioner Renee’ Makupson, according to Spectrum News 1.

Langford and Gaines opened their practice with a mission to address racial disparities in maternal and infant health faced by Black women and children. Their Ohio center uses a patient-centric approach to enhance the well-being of Black women through specialized care that is attentive to their cultural and social needs.

The Village of Healing is committed to building strong communities for women to grow personally and professionally. Women are empowered and uplifted with mentorship and support through a variety of transformative programs. The Mother-to-Mother Mentorship Program clomid is an initiative that welcomes Black mothers experiencing maternal mental health complications to receive one-on-one support.

“We understand the unique challenges that mothers may face during this critical time, and our compassionate mentors offer guidance, empathy, and understanding to empower these women through their journey,” the program’s page stated.

The Black Professional Women’s Group is a program where women 30 years and older with bachelor’s degrees or higher are invited to connect with other professionals and share their experiences. “The focus of BPWG is on healing, nurturing a supportive community where women can embrace their journeys and uplift one another,” the page read.

The co-founders, who have extensive experience in institutions, established The Village of Healing in 2019, collaborating with other Black-led organizations. In 2020, a study published by The Institute for Women’s Policy Research named Cleveland the fifth worst city for Black women in the United States.

Social Media Shows Divided State of Black Americans On Hamas’ Attack On Israel

The conversation surrounding the United States’ support of Israel has caused a rift between Black Americans on social media.

Hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter and #PLM—for Palestinian Lives Matter —have highlighted the struggles between Palestinians and African Americans in the fight against systemic racism. However, some users have repeatedly pointed out that Israel didn’t support Black struggles.

After former President Barack Obama tweeted his stance on the issue, another user reposted it, saying that Israel never showed solidarity for Black Americans against police brutality.

According to ABC News, chaos broke out on Oct. 7 when Palestinian militant group Hamas fired surprise rockets from Gaza into Israel. Armed Hamas militants stormed into restricted areas of the Gaza Strip, shooting at Jewish settlers. Shortly after, surveillance video shows Hamas militants taking Israeli mothers, children, and elderly residents as hostages across the Gaza border.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war, “We are at war, not an operation, not an escalation, a war.” International leaders have compared the war to the 9/11 attacks, as over 1,000 people have died.

The National Newspaper Publishers Association Chair Bobby Henry and President & CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. released a joint statement, according to the Dallas Weekly, condemning the acts of violence.

“The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), representing the Black Press of America, forthrightly condemns the brutal, fatal terrorist attacks today on the Jewish people and the nation of Israel by Hamas,” the statement read.

“Terrorism against innocent civilians in Israel and in any other place in the world can never be justified, tolerated, or sanctioned. We stand firmly in solidarity with Israel.”

Former NBA All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire, who converted to Judaism, took to Instagram to call out Black Lives Matter supporters for staying silent on the matter.

“And for all y’all Black Lives Matter supporters who ain’t sayin’ nothin’,’ or ‘let me figure out exactly what happened before I say anything,’ f*** you,” he said in a now-deleted video. “Figure out what? It ain’t never been cool to kidnap kids and put ’em in cages. It ain’t ever been cool to kill women and elderly, never been, no matter where you from, what you represent, what tribe you from. Don’t matter. It ain’t never been no cool thing, never been nothing nobody supported.”

The National Basketball Players Association has made posts in solidarity with Israel, stating they “condemn these acts of terrorism.” Shortly after, fans reposted, pointing out how Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving was labeled anti-semitic in 2022 for promoting the film Hebrews To Negroes: Wake Up Black America.

Defense Attorney Makes Claim Accusing Tyre Nichols Of Theft And Having Drugs

Defense Attorney Makes Claim Accusing Tyre Nichols Of Theft And Having Drugs

An attorney representing one of the former officers charged in Tyre Nichols’ death made an unconfirmed claim in court on Oct. 5.

Investigators claimed they discovered drugs and stolen credit cards in Nichols’ car when he was pulled over. According to the Associated Press, the defense attorney’s assertion complicates an already contentious situation.

Martin Zummach, the defense attorney for former officer Justin Smith, disclosed the claims in a court filing while joining another officer’s request for access to Nichols’ cell phone records as part of the federal civil rights case against the five ex-officers. Zummach alleged that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s inventory of Nichols’ car showed the presence of drugs from psilocybin, a substance found in hallucinogenic mushrooms, when police initially stopped Nichols on Jan. 7 for an alleged reckless driving violation before the confrontation that was captured on police video. The autopsy did not mention psilocybin being in the deceased victim’s system.

Zummach further contended that Nichols had stolen credit cards, debit cards, and photo identification in his vehicle along with the drugs. It is important to note that the inventory cited by the attorney remained confidential under state law, as confirmed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Nichol’s death led to the five officers’ termination and subsequent charges in state court for second-degree murder. A federal grand jury has also indicted them for alleged civil rights violations connected to the use of excessive force and failure to provide aid to Nichols as he struggled with his injuries. The officers have entered pleas of not guilty to all charges.

Federal prosecutors and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Memphis declined to comment on the recent developments. Likewise, the Shelby County district attorney and the legal representatives of Tyre Nichols’ family have not responded to inquiries regarding the accusations of drugs and stolen credit cards by Smith’s lawyer. It is a case fraught with legal complexity and social implications that continue evolving as more information surfaces.

‘The New Brownies Book’ Is A Love Letter To Black Children and Families

In celebration of its actual birthday Oct. 10, The New Brownies’ Book, a revitalization of W.E.B. Dubois’ magazine to uplift Black children, is now available to the public. Featuring an accumulation of creative works from nearly 50 Black writers and artists, the groundbreaking work is an expansive love letter to the Black community and the children who are empowered within it.

Published by Chronicle Books, The New Brownies’ Book was co-created by husband-and-wife duo, Dr. Karida L. Brown and Charly Palmer. Brown’s discovery of DuBois’ short-lived periodical sparked the new project.

It’s original title, The Brownies’ Book: A Monthly Magazine for Children of the Sun, centered its audience on Black youth, the first-ever of its kind. In Dubois’ vision, he enlisted the help of established Black authors of the time to develop a range of narratives to engage and inspire Black young readers, including Langston Hughes, who was first published within The Brownies’ Book.

Sparking a legacy of African-American children’s literature, the new rendition is a historical heirloom, complete with an excerpt from the original book, including Hughes’ poetry. The co-authors spoke exclusively to BLACK ENTERPRISE about what their hopes are for the modern collection of Black creativity, as well as expanding upon Dubois’ established work.

“We hope that Dubois would be very proud of what we’ve done here, the intentionality that this world does not evolve without us,” shared the historian and illustrator.

“We have to let our children know we’re thinking about them and they are loved, and we are doing so through reviving The Brownies’ Book.”

Upholding Dubois’ approach, the couple sought out Black creatives from all age ranges to be a part of the new imagining for the children’s novel, the youngest of which is four years old. One of the acclaimed writers featured is BE’s very own director of content, Ida Harris, who expressed her delight in being a contributor to a part of history revamped for the modern era.

“I’m extremely honored to be part of The New Brownies’ Book and to pen a love letter to youth across the Black diaspora,” shared the essayist.

“My short story ‘Mama Sick’ lands at the intersection of childhood and grief, a topic that isn’t largely addressed or covered in Black communities.”

I wanted Black girls and boys to know that I see them, I hear them, I am them.”

Filled with poetry, short stories, and fine art, with some children’s creations as well, The New Brownies’ Book: A Love Letter To Black Families is a testimony to Black creatives’ joy and genius.

To complete one’s coffee table, readers of all backgrounds and ages may purchase the collection wherever books are sold.

DOJ Opens Investigation Into Beating Of Homeless Black Veteran By Colorado Police One Year Later

DOJ Opens Investigation Into Beating Of Homeless Black Veteran By Colorado Police One Year Later

The United States Department of Justice will launch a criminal investigation into the beating of Dalvin Gadson, a year after the brutal encounter between the man and Colorado Springs police officers, Atlanta Black Star reports.

Gadson’s attorney, Harry Daniels, announced the DOJ’s plans on Monday, Oct. 9. “One year later, Chief Vasquez still refuses to hold his officers accountable after they beat and bloodied an unarmed man over a license tag infraction,” Daniels said.

“Today, we are confident that the Department of Justice will begin to correct that injustice and do what he won’t.”

The Director of the DOJ’s Office of Civil Rights, Michael L. Alston, has asked the department to review the case, considering the “nature of the law enforcement misconduct allegation,” according to reports.

Gadson, a Black veteran, was unhoused at the time of his arrest and subsequent assault in October 2022. According to reports, body cam footage from those involved in the encounter showed officers descending upon Gadson’s vehicle for “improperly displaying his license,“ a penalty for which the man would later pay a $15 fee—before ordering him to get out of the car and allegedly violently attacking him repeatedly.

In the video, Gadson’s bloody face is pressed against the concrete while his arms are restrained behind his back. He would later be charged with a litany of offenses, including driving under the influence, obstructing a peace officer, second-degree assault, resisting arrest, and driving without a license plate, all dismissed in 2023.

A federal investigation into the attack was launched last year, citing excessive force and noting that several officers laughed and joked about the brutal beating. An internal investigation by the Colorado Springs Police Department concluded that the three officers allegedly involved in the incident—Matthew Anderson, Colby Hickman, and Christopher Hummel—displayed reasonable actions at the time of Gadson’s arrest.
