Robert L. Johnson Calls Out Corporations’ Lack of Support of Black Business After BLM Pledges

Black businesses seem to be thriving, but is there more to the story?

Robert L. Johnson, the founder of BET, claims Black business owners aren’t reaping the benefits of the money that corporations pledged during the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, Bloomberg reported.

During an appearance on The David Rubenstein Show, Johnson said the Black community is “disappointed.”

“The sad secret of that is companies — White companies — have announced that they’re gonna put millions of dollars into diversity, in terms of Black investment and business,” Johnson said.

“It’s really not happening.”

The height of BLM protests began in 2020, after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis.

Corporations from McDonald’s to Bank of America pledged close to $50 billion to expand the movement and do their part, according to The Washington Post.

However, looking deeper into the funds, The Post found that $45.2 billion can be allocated as loans or investments that they could profit from. $4.2 billion of the total pledged is in the form of grants and only $70 million actually went to organizations with a specific focus on criminal reform.

Johnson, chairman of RLJ Companies, told the outlet that each company should be audited, to prove where their money has gone.

However, one specialist said corporations often don’t have the ability to do all they say.

“Corporations are not set up to wield their power for the greater good as much as we give them credit for, a lot of times,” Phillip Atiba Goff told The Washington Post.

Goff, co-founder of The Center for Policing Equity, also said that it’s more of an ideation. “They are constrained by things they feel they need to do to manage their brand in a world where Black liberation does not have consensus.”

The former Charlotte Bobcats owner wants corporations to remember Black businesses when making such bold promises, reminding Bloomberg of the risk Black entrepreneurs take.

“It’s just not easy” for Black entrepreneurs trying to start businesses today, Johnson said.

“It is correct to say people think about it more. But do they do more? That’s the problem.”

No Regrets: Tracee Ellis Ross Is Kid-Free and Feeling Herself

Motherhood is a journey but it’s not for everyone.

Tracee Ellis Ross may have played a mom on television but as for real life, the 50-year-old recently said “she has no regrets” about not having children.

The Root reports in a recent appearance on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast, Ross opened about her journey without kids. “My ability to have a child is leaving me, but, like, I don’t agree that that’s what ‘fertile’ means,” Ross said. “I don’t agree that that’s what ‘woman’ means.”

She’s correct. Cambridge Dictionary defines fertile as “animals or plants are able to produce (a lot of) young or fruit” as well as “mind or imagination is active and produces a lot of interesting and unusual ideas.” The Golden Globe Award-winning actress definitely has no problem in that category.

Ross admits that while she has no regrets, she does have some bouts of sadness.

Ross told podcast host Glennon Doyle that heartbreak does happen when she thinks about not having kids.

“I woke up every morning of my life and I’ve tried to do my best, so I must be where I’m supposed to be,’” Ross said, according to The Root.

The Girlfriends star went further and shared a personal journal entry, expressing her thoughts on entering menopause, calling it hilarious. “I can feel my body’s ability to make a child draining out of me,” she writes.

“Sometimes I find it hilarious, as if there’s a fire sale going on in my uterus and someone’s in there screaming, ‘All things must go.”

If you follow Ms. Ross on Instagram, you can see that she’s living her best life.

Let me see it,” Ross proclaimed, according to Prevention. “Your body now, in 10 years, you’re gonna wish you had.”

Update: All Five Cops Involved In Tyre Nichols’ Case Charged With Murder

Update: All Five Cops Involved In Tyre Nichols’ Case Charged With Murder

Memphis police officers identified in the Tyre Nichols case have been charged with second-degree murder.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith were booked Thursday in Shelby County Jail, according to ABC News.

The five officers were also charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, official misconduct, and official oppression.

National outcry is calling for police footage to be released.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David Rausch announced the footage would be available Friday evening but warned of its horrible viewing.

“In a word, it’s absolutely appalling,” Rausch warned, according to ABC News.

“Let me be clear, what happened here does not at all reflect proper policing. This was wrong. This was criminal.”

Tyre Nichols was declared dead at a Memphis hospital three days after being brought in by emergency officials in critical condition. Nichols was pulled over for reckless driving on Jan. 7 and after two confrontations with the officers, was arrested after reports claimed he was beaten.

ABC 24 reports that each charged officer has been granted bond, but at different levels. The bond for Haley and Martin has been set at $350,000, while the bond for Bean, Mills, and Smith is set at $250,000.

Attorneys representing Mills and Beans, Blake Ballin and Bill Massey, respectively, claim the two officers were in the process of bonding out of jail.

Nichols’s family has already released a statement regarding the announced charges, according to ABC 24; however, the family told ABC News earlier this week they were looking for a first-degree murder charge.

“This tragedy meets the absolute definition of a needless and unnecessary death,” the Nichols family wrote. “Tyre’s loved ones’ lives were forever changed when he was beaten to death, and we will keep saying his name until justice is served.”

All five officers involved in the case worked under the SCORPION Unit, known for “Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace In Our Neighborhoods.”

ABC reports the unit was launched in 2021 with the goal of “addressing violent crimes in the city in a 50-person unit that operates seven days a week.”

15-year-old Sentenced for Stabbing Rival Cheerleader to Death at NY High School

15-year-old Sentenced for Stabbing Rival Cheerleader to Death at NY High School

A 15-year-old girl in Mount Vernon NY, was sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter after she stabbed a cheerleader to death.

According to ABC7NY Kayla Green, 16, died when she was stabbed in the stomach as the result of a ‘long-standing’ cheer rivalry during a huge brawl after the Mount Vernon High School basketball team won the state championship last year.

The attacker, who has not yet been identified because she’s a minor, sobbed in court as she apologized for killing the junior varsity cheer captain, with the judge sentencing her to three to nine years.

Green’s mother, Laverne Gordon, condemned the sentence as a ‘mockery.’

“Today the justice system failed my daughter once again,” Gordon said outside court on Tuesday. “

Her killer gets to get out in three years to live her life to have family, to have a career. My daughter will never see that.”

The suspect was reportedly a part of an independent cheer club that Green was also in before becoming captain of the JV cheerleading squad.

Judge Susan Cacace said Green’s death was a result of: ‘a longstanding rivalry between two cheerleading squads in the city of Mount Vernon.’

Facing the judge on Tuesday, the defendant sobbed as she read a statement expressing her remorse prior to the sentencing.

“I am sorry my actions took away a big sister. I am sorry my actions took away a daughter,’ she said.

“I think of all the different choices I could have made that day that would have left Kayla alive and saved her family this heartache. But that is why everyone is here today, because I made bad choices.”

One of Birmingham’s Brightest Entrepreneurs, Shegun Otulana, Sold His Company for $1.2 Billion

One of Birmingham, Alabama’s most skillful entrepreneurs, Shegun Otulana, sold his company Therapy Brands for a hefty sum, $1.2 billion.

According to Otulana, over the next decade, he plans to create 40 new startups in Birmingham–with an aggregate value in the billions of dollars.”

“It took us about seven and half years to take our prior startup to a company worth north of a billion dollars,” Otulana adds.

“But I project we can build 10 companies over the next 10 years with the insights we’ve learned and with the support of a lot of people in our community.”

During an interview with ComebackTown, Otulana said being capital efficient was instrumental to building his brand.

“We became very profitable very fast. We did not raise a lot of money. My company was very capital efficient and built a company that became profitable within its second year. This is certainly not the norm, but being capital efficient has become a best practice.”

He adds:  “If we can bring the capital, create the right teams, and find the right partners, we can significantly increase chances of success.”

Otulana moved to Birmingham from Lagos, Nigeria, to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he majored in engineering and management information systems.

Shortly after graduating in 2004, Otulana launched his first company, Zertis.

Then, in 2013, he created TheraNest, serving as founder and CEO of TheraNest and its parent company, Therapy Brands, which provides software solutions for mental and behavioral health providers. As of May, Therapy Brands served more than 28,000 practices nationwide.

Otulana plans to use what he learned from creating TheraNest and Therapy Brands to build Birmingham’s economy.  With his new entity, Harmony Venture Labs, Otulana’s goal is to create software as a service, specifically B2B SaaS.

“HVL takes a venture equity approach to building companies. Venture capitalists and private equity people take a lot of risks, so they are more interested in companies that are very capital efficient and very profitable,” Otulana told ComebackTown.

“My experience is that those companies actually have a better chance of succeeding in a place like Birmingham.”

‘The Way It Should Be!’ College Coach Blasted for Criticizing How Savannah James Protects Bronny From Recruiters

An anonymous college coach is under fire for seemingly criticizing the way Savannah James chooses to protect her eldest son from hungry recruiters.

On Tuesday, ON3’s NIL 100 released its valuation list which ranks all athletes eligible for name, image, and likeness deals. Bronny James came in at number one with a whopping $7.5 million.

https://twitter.com/On3NIL/status/1617997782329200641?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1617997782329200641%7Ctwgr%5Efea8f0ec79f5f8ae45804e0a7da745f83fa725a6%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fbossip.com%2F2223312%2Fbronny-recruiting%2F

The list followed a roundup the outlet released of interviews with recruiters who shared their experience with trying to recruit LeBron and Savannah James’ teenage son. There was one anonymous respondent who appeared to throw some subtle shade at Mrs. James for how she makes recruiters work to speak to Bronny.

“I tried to get involved, but you had to jump through a thousand hoops just to get to the mom,” an ACC coach told On3.

“You’re not allowed to talk to the kid. You have to schedule a time on Tuesday or Thursday with the publicist just to talk to the mom.”

Once the article was shared on Twitter, social media decided to call out the college coach for seemingly complaining about Savannah’s way of protecting her teenage son from pushy recruiters.

“When they can’t prey on a child’s lack of experience because their parents have given them more than you could ever promise , you can’t sell them a dream . So yeah coach, this recruit is gonna require actual work,” one user wrote.

https://twitter.com/heavystackhouse/status/1618268037890859014?s=20&t=xcUaUZYCV-MNh3OOKCHoOA

“The way it should be,” one fan said in praise of Savannah.

“She has a name, its savannah and she’s a fu*king queen,” another fan quipped.

There was one fan who shared their theory on why certain recruiters had to work so hard to get to Bronny.

“If you have to jump through hoops they probably aren’t interested lol,” they wrote.

Bronny is currently ranked #28 in ESPNs top 100 prospects with numerous colleges trying to recruit him as he heads to college.

Aaliyah

Aaliyah Fans Launch Petition to Get Her Inducted Into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Aaliyah fans have launched a petition in hopes of getting the late R&B singer inducted into the iconic Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

A Change.org petition created by Albert Tsibu is asking fans to support a new mission to have Aaliyah added among the music legends deemed worthy of a coveted spot in the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame. Tsibu pleads his case for why the multi-platinum singer deserves the accolade over twenty years after her untimely passing.

“More than 20 years after her tragic death, Aaliyah’s presence and influence is still being felt throughout the world of music, fashion, film and pop culture,” the petition states.

“As Aaliyah once stated in her 2001 episode of MTV Diary, she wanted to be remembered as a full-on entertainer and someone who did it all; which is exactly what she did within her 7-year career.”

Tsibu continues. “All of her studio albums (“Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number”-1994, “One In A Million”-1996, “Aaliyah”-2001) achieved multi-platinum status along with multiple hit singles, awards and millions of records sold during her lifetime.”

The petition goes on to highlight Aaliyah’s influence on many of today’s mainstream artists who have paid tribute to the singer posthumously.

“Everyone from Beyoncé, Rihanna & Drake to Normani, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande & The Weeknd among many other popular artists whom all have credited Aaliyah as a source of inspiration to their music and careers,” the petition says.

Tsibu ended his plea with a nod to Aaliyah’s continued influence on a “new generation” of artists who draw inspiration from the late singer’s “innovative body of work that stands the test of time to this very day.”

Support grew after the petition was shared on Twitter Monday.

“A petition is going around to get the late RNB Icon Aaliyah inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame 7,500 signatures needed,” DJ Jay Erica tweeted. “I just signed she deserves this recognition & honor as her music continues to break records and touch lives. 20 years later.”
