BOLD By Wyndham Initiative Aims To Expand Support For Black Entrepreneurs In The Hotel Industry

BOLD By Wyndham Initiative Aims To Expand Support For Black Entrepreneurs In The Hotel Industry

According to Geoff Ballotti, the president and CEO of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, more than 20% of Black Americans are involved in business ownership. However, less than two percent of U.S. hotels are Black-owned.

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, the world’s largest hotel franchise company, sporting more than 9,100 hotels in 95-plus countries on six continents, is working to increase the number of Black-owned U.S. hotels through its BOLD By Wyndham initiative to engage and advance more Black entrepreneurs on the path to hotel ownership.

“We’re a public company, we want to see more Black Americans own and develop hotels, and we said as the world’s largest franchisor, with all of the resources that are out there from an industry standpoint and all of our contacts, what can we do to really expand Black hotel ownership?” Ballotti told BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“How can we expand and help whatever challenges that Black Americans that want to get into the business are having?”

Ballotti added that Wyndham created the BOLD initiative to help and support Black entrepreneurs interested in the hotel industry and accelerate those already familiar with the benefits of hotel ownership, offering the tools and guidance to help Black entrepreneurs profit and succeed.

Wyndham’s BOLD Initiative was founded on two key building blocks: attracting more Black entrepreneurs to hotel ownership by promoting it as a vehicle for wealth creation and accelerating the path to hotel ownership.

Through BOLD, Black entrepreneurs will participate in Wyndham-sponsored networking and educational events and receive resources designed to help explore hotel ownership and what it takes to be a successful hotelier. During the events, participants will have the chance to learn more about ownership, common barrier and how to overcome them, tips for securing financing, and more.

For those already in the industry, the BOLD Initiative will provide qualified members with access to enhanced capital and operational support; financing opportunities, including lender introductions; and discounts with preferred suppliers. Additionally, eligible members will be invited to participate in signature BOLD Incubator events, connecting them with committed lenders and brokers and offering the opportunity to explore partner/joint venture opportunities and package development deals that come with additional capital support.

The BOLD Initiative already has its inaugural member in Vaughn Irons, who was awarded a new 110-room TRYP by Wyndham franchise hotel in the Atlanta suburb of Stonecrest, Georgia.

Irons, who has been in the finance industry for more than two decades, including a stint at Freddie Mac and several other nonprofits, has been working on the development of the Mall at Stonecrest for five years. He told BLACK ENTERPRISE that he initially wanted to partner with Wyndham, who brought up the idea of him owning the hotel.

“I explained to Wyndham in a long email my business plan with attachments and I actually got a phone call back from Wyndham within 24 hours,” Irons told BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“So I sent the email, I think, on a Tuesday, and I got a callback Wednesday, and we actually went through the conversation, and the next Wednesday, a person from Wyndham flew to Atlanta to walk the site with me, so within eight days of me sending an email I had a Wyndham representative on the site who essentially was validating and confirming the information I shared, and they were interested in our vision enough to take that expense and make it as urgent as I needed it to be.”

The hotel will significantly enhance Stonecrest Resorts’ current $17 million adaptive reuse project, Priví, which is transforming The Mall at Stonecrest into a family entertainment and lifestyle destination that will be a Black-owned development, including a Black-owned hotel in a majority-Black city.

Priví includes a health and wellness complex, fine art gallery, bookstore, coffee shop, an incubator for creatives, a 5,000 sq. ft. events facility, a food hall, museum, fashion designer emporium, and expanded family entertainment. These elements will increase the total investment of the Priví project to $35 million, with the hotel expected to break ground in early 2023.

Snoop Dogg Launches Pet Accessory Line ‘Snoop Doggie Doggs’

What’s the use of being named Snoop Dogg if you can’t capitalize off of it?

Calvin Broadus, better known as Snoop Dogg, announced that he has partnered with SMAC Entertainment and Little Earth Productions, Inc., a leading manufacturer of licensed fashion accessories and apparel, to create a new pet accessory line.

The company is appropriately named Snoop Doggie Doggs. The line intends to pull inspiration from the entertainer’s lifestyle and will prompt pet owners everywhere to spoil their dogs, as well as their cats.

“If my dogs ain’t fresh I ain’t fresh,” said Snoop Dogg in a written statement.

“These dogs and their apparel are a reflection of Tha Dogg himself, so they gotta look the role of a Top Dog, ya dig?!?!”

The Death Row Records owner is launching the pet accessory line before the peak holiday shopping season. Snoop Doggie Doggs merchandise is available exclusively at SnoopDoggieDoggs.com and on through Amazon, with prices ranging from $14.99 to $99.99.. The products from Snoop Doggie Doggs will range in size XS-XL, but the rapper plans to have a “big dog” size as well.

You can purchase items like dog apparel, plush toys, bowls, leashes, and more, as well as a similar line of products for cats. The line includes collections such as “Off The Chain,” “Boss Lady,” and “Throw a Dogg a Bone.”

“Snoop Dogg was, without a question, the most fitting and amazing partner we could think of in the dog and pet space,” said Rob Brandegee, co-founder of Little Earth Productions, Inc.

“Snoop’s personality and authenticity are undeniably evident in our creative pet product offerings, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to share the new Snoop Doggie Doggs brand with you ahead of the holidays–it’s the perfect holiday gift for pet owners this season. Talk about a holiday treat.”

Snoop isn’t looking to rest anytime soon. Last week, he announced an upcoming movie featuring his life story, produced by Universal Pictures. Menace II Society director Allen Hughes is slated to direct the biopic, and Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole is on board to write the screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Black Farmers Equity Initiative

NMSDC and Cargill Launch New Program to Advance Agricultural Supply Chain Access for Black Farmers

According to McKinsey & Company, today just 1.4% of farmers identify as Black or mixed race compared with about 14% a century ago.

Furthermore, these farmers represent less than 0.5% of total U.S. farm sales.

Perhaps, even more disturbing, Black farmers operate at 70% of US peer-level farm revenue. Because of this extreme inequity in the U.S. agricultural industry and thanks to the support from Cargill, the National Minority Supplier Development Council Inc.® (NMSDC®) launched the Black Farmers Equity Initiative.

Cargill’s Black Farmer Equity initiative was introduced one year ago to help address racial inequity in agriculture – focusing on increasing participation, profitability and productivity of Black farmers, ranchers and growers. Working alongside its customers, Cargill is committed to supporting farmer livelihoods by improving market access, is training 10 million farmers globally by 2030 and is increasing supplier diversity by spending $10 billion with small businesses and $1 billion with certified diverse-owned businesses globally.

This collaborative initiative aims to create a pathway for emerging Black farmers to achieve parity in the agriculture industry with learning solutions, certification, lending, networking, and new contracts. The
program consists of two elements: a learning program and strategic business support. Black Farmers will receive learnings on:
• Certification as a minority business enterprise (MBE) and how it can
open opportunities for Black farmers.
• Access to capital, getting capital ready, and how to leverage micro-loans.
• How to address issues of growth specific to the farming industry such as
storage, putting acreage into production and equipment management
• Negotiation skills.
• Developing a plan for and managing growth.
• Reviewing opportunities and challenges shared by corporate members.

Kanye West Plans to Sell Adidas And Balenciaga ‘Ye2024’ Presidential Campaign Merch For $20

Kanye West is ready to sell his designer merch for an extremely low price in the wake of losing his multi-million dollar deals with Adidas and Balenciaga.

On Sunday, X17 posted a YouTube video from inside Ye’s warehouse, where he’s now storing hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars worth of Adidas, Balenciaga, and Gap merch he’s designing to sport his “YE24” logo, Forbes reports.

While Kanye could sell the pieces for hundreds, he instead says he will only charge consumers $20 for the pieces that promote his expected 2024 presidential run. The price point is an extreme drop from his Balenciaga and Gap pieces that retailed between $100 to $400, while clothing from his Adidas Yeezy line also ran customers $100 or more per item.

Fans of the rap/fashion mogul are defending the low price point and claim it’s always how much West wanted to charge for his designs.

“In case you don’t know, GAP used his name for the Yeezy Gap collection which was originally supposed to cost $20/50$ per item, but GAP ended up choosing the prices themselves,” Kanye fan page Donda Times tweeted.

“That’s one of the reasons he terminated the contract,” they added.

While Kanye did terminate his contract with Gap, Adidas and Balenciaga parted ways with the Yeezy founder following anti-Semitic remarks he made on social media and in the press.

There are other fans who called out the hypocrisy of Kanye for selling his merch at a low price after seeing his net worth drop from being in the billions to $400 million.

“Ahhhh when he rich and a billionaire he wanna sell everything high but now that he lost his billionaire status he wanna “look out” for the ppl so they can afford it…I get it…I get it,” one user wrote.

“The thing is they could have always been 20$,” added someone else.

“The other thing is, he’s doing this to get back at people. He went from no one can touch me, to I’ll touch everyone. Still the focus is him.”

Kanye appears to be on to the next stage with his newly-unveiled method of getting rid of all the pieces from his canceled deals. He appears to be focusing on the upcoming election by announcing his presidential campaign manager, Milo Yiannopolous, who appeared alongside West in the video.

Black Hebrew Israelites March Toward Barclays Center to Support Kyrie Irving’s Return to Brooklyn Nets

Black Hebrew Israelites March Toward Barclays Center to Support Kyrie Irving’s Return to Brooklyn Nets

The Black Hebrew Israelites have taken to the streets of Brooklyn in the wake of Kyrie Irving’s return to the Brooklyn Nets.

The Nets reinstated Irving on Sunday ahead of Sunday night’s game between the Nets and Memphis Grizzlies. Once Irving’s return was announced, a swarm of Black Hebrew Israelites organized a march on the streets where they shouted a chant announcing themselves as the real Jewish community.

“We are the real Jews. And that’s the good news,” the group chanted.

Video shows the Black Hebrew Israelites marching in unison while chanting en route to the Nets’ home at the Barclays Center.

The group donned purple and gold attire while standing outside the Barclays Center singing their chant.

Debates around the Jewish religion and Black Hebrew Israelites have heightened in the wake of Irving being suspended from the Nets after promoting the documentary Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America on his social media.

The film and book of the same name were created by Ronald Dalton. The book was released in 2015, and the documentary has been available on Amazon since 2018.

Dalton says the film “uncovers the true identity of the Children of Israel by proving the true ethnicity of Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Sons of Ham, Shem and Japheth. Find out what Islam, Judaism and Christianity has covered up for centuries in regards to the true biblical identity of the so-called ‘Negro’ in this movie packed with tons of research.”

However, the Anti-Defamation League and many in the Jewish community have deemed the film antisemitic, Fox News reports. Irving was labeled antisemitic and was forced to apologize after failing to apologize when initially confronted about the documentary.

ESPN reports that Irving has shut down the antisemitic criticism and has since apologized “deeply” for the controversy he stirred up.

“I don’t stand for anything close to hate speech or antisemitism or anything that is anti going against the human race,” Irving said.

“I feel like we all should have an opportunity to speak for ourselves when things are assumed about us. And I feel it was necessary for me to stand in this place and take accountability for my actions because there was a way I should have handled all of this.”

‘Keep Your Enemies Closer’: Shanquella Robinson Not First Black Woman to Die Around ‘Friends’

The death of 25-year-old Shanquella Robinson becomes a part of the list of mysterious incidents where Black women were surrounded by friends at the time of their deaths.

(Image: Facebook)

As previously reported by BLACK ENTERPRISE, the young North Carolina woman was on vacation with her friends in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. Although Robinson’s friends denied any wrongdoing in her death, leaked video footage of a fight raised suspicions and led many to assume her friends played a role in her death. Robinson’s father said his daughter was set up by so-called friends and the FBI is investigating her death.

Robinson’s funeral service was held on Nov. 19, 2022.

Friends or Foes? The Curious Case of Tamla Horsford’s “Accidental” Death

BLACK ENTERPRISE also reported on the mysterious death of Tamla Horsford, a 40-year-old married mother of five. She died while attending an adult sleepover on Nov. 4, 2018, where she appeared to be the only Black person in attendance.

https://twitter.com/ERnurse86/status/1559157250631008256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1559157250631008256%7Ctwgr%5Ef19f5face234a2c7070377a78d8e44f07272c41e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fnewsone.com%2F4451206%2Fshanquella-robinsons-death-spotlights-other-black-women-mysteriously-dying-around-their-friends%2F

The slumber party was coordinated for the mothers of children who played on a football team in Cumming, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta in Forsythe County.

Even after a reinvestigation, no criminal charges were filed by The Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office initially ruled Horsford’s death an accident, claiming that she fell from a second-story balcony at the sleepover.

What Happened to Kenneka Jenkins?

Another suspicious incident that caught national attention was the case of 19-year-old Kenneka Jenkins who was found dead inside a walk-in freezer in a hotel in suburban Chicago on Sept. 10, 2017, hours after she was partying with friends on Sept. 9, Investigation Discovery reports,

According to friends, Jenkins disappeared before they were able to meet her in the hallway of the hotel room in the Crowne Plaza.

In this case, investigators concluded that Jenkins was intoxicated and walked into the freezer after stumbling alone through the hotel’s hallways.

All three cases were claimed to be alcohol-related incidents, as authorities for Horsford’s case said her injuries resulted from “acute ethanol intoxication,” according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. While Jenkins’ death was determined to be a result of significant contributing factors, including hypothermia, with alcohol and a drug used to treat epilepsy and migraines, per the Cook County medical examiner.

Robinson’s friends claim that she died from alcohol poisoning, but a report from Mexican officials determined her neck and spine were broken.

Although an investigation is reportedly underway for Robinson, the deaths of Horsford and Jenkins still leave some with unanswered questions.

The Mysterious Death of Asia Maynard

While these women were reportedly in the company of friends, we cannot forget women like 29-year-old Asia Maynard who went on a date and ended up dead under mysterious circumstances after meeting a man at a gas station and going on a date with a man earlier this year.

Change Has Come After the Deaths of Lauren Smith-Fields and Brenda Lee Rawls

As BLACK ENTERPRISE previously reported, Bridgeport, Connecticut lawmakers presented changes to state law in the form of House Bill 5349, which states there will be timely reporting to next of kin by the police following a death. It will require law enforcement to inform the family of the deceased within 24 hours of identification.

The bill comes following the deaths of Lauren Smith-Fields, 23, and Brenda Lee Rawls, 53, whose families were never notified of their passing. Both women died on the same day, Dec. 12, 2021, in Bridgeport, reports the New York Times. Both families had to beg police for details pertaining to their deaths.

Both women died under strange circumstances involving a man, however, the medical examiner ruled their deaths as accidental overdose and natural causes.

The bottom line is we need better oversight when it comes to the protection of Black women.

Laurence Fishburne Admits To Seeking Therapy After Being Physically Abusive to His First Wife

Laurence Fishburne Admits To Seeking Therapy After Being Physically Abusive to His First Wife

Actor Laurence Fishburne is getting candid about the therapy he sought after being physically abusive with his first wife.

Fishburne is known for his strong portrayal of Ike Turner in the 1993 Tina Turner biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It.

He appeared on the Jemele Hill Is Unbothered podcast where she asked him how he prepared for the role. Instead of giving a vague response, Fishburne spoke candidly about the personal experience that shaped his portrayal of Ike.

“Having had some experience with that as a young man, I did a lot of counseling,” Fishburne said, in the clip captured by The Jasmine Brand.

He went on to credit the Black therapist he hired at the time, who helped him confront his “anger issues” that led to him being physically abusive in his first marriage.

“I found a great African American therapist who helped me deal with my anger issues,” Fishburne continued. “Because I had been physical with my first wife.”

“I got married when I was twenty-three years old, my first wife was twenty-one,” he explained, referring to his ex-wife Hajna O. Moss.

“And our relationship was very volatile. And I was physically abusive with my first wife, to my regret, and to my shame.”

The Matrix star spent about five years in therapy and used his past experience when tapping into the role of Ike Turner, who was physically abusive to Tina Turner during their marriage.

“So, I was very familiar with the territory and with the emotional landscape of what, you know, brings a person to that place,” he explained. “Where they feel the need to be abusive to their partner.”

When asked if he ever identified the root of his past abuse, Fishburne touched on identifying his triggers.

“I didn’t really, specifically, work on the source of my anger,” he said.

“It was really about how to recognize it when it was coming up, what my triggers were, and what were the behaviors that I could use that would counter it. That would help me to move in a different direction.”

Viewers who watched the telling interview applauded Fishburne for acknowledging his past mistakes and showing his growth from the experience.

“I respect him for him acknowledging his problems and fixing it,” one viewer wrote.

“At least he actually made a change for the better.”

“Damn, powerful message. Takes a true man to recognize their behavior, get help, break the cycle,” added someone else.
