For World Mental Health Day, Here are 26 Black Mental Health Resources

It’s time to talk about mental health.

Black people in the U.S. endure the weight of racism, systemic oppression, and social injustices day in and day out. On top of that socioeconomic disparities, provider bias, and inequality of care are common barriers to mental health support for Black people. Never mind the fact that 17.3% of mental health illnesses in the U.S. each year are experienced by non-Hispanic Black or African Americans, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health.

While the stigma of mental health still exists in the Black community, many individuals and organizations are working to dismantle it.

Tensions Run High After Alabama State Coach Snubs Deion Sanders’ Embrace After Loss to Jackson State

Concerns quickly grew among the college football sports community after an awkward exchange was made at center field between Jackson State Head Coach Deion Sanders and Alabama Head Coach Eddie Robinson Jr.

Robinson shook the NFL Hall of Famer’s hand but wanted no part of embracing him in a coach hug after his team’s loss to Jackson State, 26-12 at Alabama State’s homecoming game Saturday.

The exchange left Sanders in disbelief as he walked off the field with his security detail.

Robinson later explained that Sanders had made disrespectful comments leading up to their match-up earlier in the week.

He also alleged Sanders walked through Alabama State’s offensive warm-ups in one of the end zones as opposed to taking Jackson State’s route to the sideline and attempted to run up the scoreboard in the final minute of the game instead of the team taking a knee.

“I’m going to always be respectful and respect the game,” Robinson said in his post-conference interview paying homage to SWAC conference coaches.

But many reacted to Robinson’s comment, “He ain’t SWAC. I’m SWAC, he ain’t SWAC” which was a direct shot at Sanders.

Robinson continued his press conference interview by stating, “He’s in the conference, doing a great job, can’t knock that, got a great team, his son should be up for the Heisman Trophy, I love Shedeur, great player, I love what he’s doing for the conference. … But you’re not going to come here and disrespect me and my team and my school and then want a bro hug. Shake my hand and get the hell off.”

Sanders defended his pregame routine, stating he always ran around the field before NFL games and arrived too late to greet Robinson before kickoff.

But the NFL veteran did not take too lightly towards Robinson’s comment that he didn’t reflect the SWAC conference.

“I’m not one to come back the next day and you going to pick up the phone and you going to apologize and we straight,” Sanders said during his post game interview.

In 2021, Sanders led Jackson State to 12 consecutive SWAC wins and a league title while bringing national attention to the HBCU football team.

ViiV Healthcare Aims To Reframe HIV Prevention, Care among Black Women

ViiV Healthcare Aims To Reframe HIV Prevention, Care among Black Women

ViiV Healthcare is on a mission to reframe HIV prevention for Black women amid the disproportionately high rate of those diagnosed compared to other races, according to the CDC.

ViiV Healthcare, which is an independent, global specialist HIV company, made it their duty to combat this issue by creating a report called Risk to Reasons that has released this year.

According to a release, the report highlights the need for new strategic methods to engage Black women effectively about their reasons for HIV prevention and who can exactly lead these conversations.

The company partnered with Black women advocates and experts to create a new committee called the Black Women’s Working Group (BWWG).

The committee consists of Black women living with or working in HIV to challenge existing prevention approaches and develop new recommendations for communicating and connecting with Black women about HIV.

This has also help formulate ViiV Healthcare’s Risk to Reasons initiative, which aims to create network spaces for information to circulate about HIV treatment and solutions.

ViiV Healthcare has also committed $8 million in funding through their Risk to Reasons community grant to support initiatives that focus on raising awareness about the importance of HIV prevention and care for Black women.

The program says their goal over the next three years, is to reach more than 1 million people with reasons for HIV prevention through their 17 awardees.

More than 3,500 providers are projected to be better positioned to deliver care for Black women.

According to a recent study, approximately 61% of new HIV diagnoses have been among Black women.

The study goes on to say that medicine that is taken such as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), by people who don’t have HIV to substantially lower the risk if they are exposed, has been low among U.S. women, particularly women of color.

Kanye West Claims Adidas Stole His Design After Yeezy — Partnership Placed Under Review

Kanye West Claims Adidas Stole His Design After Yeezy — Partnership Placed Under Review

Rapper Kanye West, who legally changed his name to Ye, may be parting ways soon with his retail partner Adidas after the company tried to quietly resolve various business disagreements behind the scenes.

This comes after Ye made a series of rants in the past, including claims Adidas made a fake Yeezy slide design and hosted a Yeezy Day event, which is a branded day on the re-release of various Yeezy sneakers, without the rapper’s alleged approval.

Ye also alleged in an Instagram screenshot posted on Complex that the company made hiring decisions for the brand that included the general manager of Yeezy without his approval.

In 2013, the retail giant announced its partnership with Ye to manufacture and distribute products from his Yeezy clothing line.

That announcement became firm in 2016 as the Yeezy brand currently represents 4-8% of the company’s total revenue, according to Cowen’s John Kernan.

Adidas issued a statement Friday surrounding their business model and partnership with the now acclaimed fashion designer as the company says their relationship with Ye is under review.

The statements goes on to read:

“Adidas has always been about creativity, innovation, and supporting athletes and artists to achieve their vision. The Adidas Yeezy partnership is one of the most successful collaborations in our industry’s history.

We are proud of our team that has worked tirelessly throughout our collaboration with Ye and the iconic products that were born from it.

We also recognize that all successful partnerships are rooted in mutual respect and shared values. After repeated efforts to privately resolve the situation, we have taken the decision to place the partnership under review. We will continue to co-manage the current product during this period.”

Ye has also been in the news recently for wearing a White Lives Matter t-shirt with political commentator Candace Owens in Paris during a runway show apart of Paris Fashion Week, where he unveiled his YZY Season 9 collection.

Former Bus Driver Becomes MARTA’s Sole Finalist For CEO Position In Georgia

Former bus driver Collie Greenwood worked for 30 years at the Toronto Transit Commission, which is the third-largest transit system in North America, and worked his way through the ranks to become chief service officer.

Greenwood joined MARTA in 2019 as the chief of bus operations and urban planning. He was then named the deputy general manager of operations.

After serving as an interim general manager and CEO since January for MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) after the untimely death of its CEO, Greenwood has become their sole finalist for the position, the MARTA Board of Directors announced, WSBTV reports.

Currently, Greenwood carries the responsibility to improve customer experience by overseeing all bus and rail operation projects.

In his interim role, he was also in charge of leading the way for the company to purchase new railcars and the addition of electric buses, which is the largest project in MARTA’s history.

MARTA Board Chair Rita Scott issued a statement that reads:

“Since arriving at MARTA, Collie has shown a tremendous knowledge of transit and capacity for leadership and innovation, while always keeping the customer front and center. His rapid promotion to second-in-command demonstrated his ability to do the job well, and his steady, skilled leadership this year has further demonstrated that he is the best person to lead us as we navigate a post-pandemic world and embark on a historic enhancement and expansion program.”

According to state law in Georgia, MARTA must wait for a 14-day period until the Board of Directors can vote to officially offer Greenwood the position.

At its board meeting, MARTA issued a statement about the upcoming transition.

“Jeff Parker has built an incredible team of professionals to lead MARTA into its expansion phase with a renewed commitment to improving the customer experience,” the statement said. “As the head of operations, Mr. Greenwood has been central to that work and his appointment ensures continuity of our shared vision.”

The former MARTA general manager and CEO Jeffrey Parker committed suicide in January.

Texas Woman Shot To Death Reportedly Over Beating Man in Basketball

Texas Woman Shot To Death Reportedly Over Beating Man in Basketball

Authorities in Dallas, Texas are investigating the shooting death of a 21-year-old woman after she was allegedly killed over a dispute from a pickup basketball game.

Police say Asia Womack was killed Monday, Oct. 3, after playing basketball that evening at a nearby park up the street from her home.

Womack’s family told Fox 4 she was playing in a pickup game in South Dallas at T.G. Terry Park that she won against the guy who is believed to have shot her.

The alleged shooter reportedly took his kids and brother home and returned to the park, shooting Womack five times, according to the family.

They add there was reportedly trash talk involved during the pickup game.

“This was supposed to be a friend of Womack’s. She’s eaten with the man. She’s fed him, and he turned on her and killed her in a vicious way,” Womack’s mother, Andrea Womack, told Fox 4.

Local Pastor John Delley added during the interview, “This is so senseless. You become embarrassed basically because a female beat you in basketball.”

Authorities say they retrieved video from cameras at a nearby store that possibly captured the car speeding away.

“Detectives are still working the case,” said Kristin Lowman with the Dallas Police Department. “No one is in custody at this time. They’ve been working it since Monday night trying to find justice for Miss Womack.”

Womack was a former basketball player for her high school alma mater, Madison High School.

Authorities are offering $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

“If you know where he is, where his whereabouts are, please turn him in,” Andrea said during her interview with Fox 4. “Help the family out. We’re hurting.”
