African American Woman Develops Unique Program to Help Level the Playing Field for 750,000 Minority Construction Firms

African American Woman Develops Unique Program to Help Level the Playing Field for 750,000 Minority Construction Firms

A decade ago, Suzanne Stantley realized that billions of dollars in construction projects were going on in communities throughout the country and that most African American businesses were not in the loop to bargain for, identify and connect with the right decision-makers.

She learned these businesses’ inability to make connections impacted their ability to participate in the American dream, and she knew exactly what she had to do. Stantley took her more than 35 years as a trained marketer and parlayed that into a venture that would bring companies, small and large, together to do business.

Her vision was to bring diverse businesses, government, project owners, large prime contractors, suppliers and buyers together where they could network and talk about building relationships. And she named that vision the Construction Industry Conference, which will host its 10th conference virtually later this year, according to a press release.

While executing and planning the conference, Suzanne launched the contractor development side of her company, BE Group, that would focus its efforts on helping these diverse firms build the capacity to bid on and win contracts. After all, the end game is to win contracts and generate revenue. She realized that in many states, and in particular her home state of Illinois and home city of Chicago, African-American firms received less than one percent of the annual revenue generated in the commercial industry.

As she expanded her firm’s services, she rebranded the concept and named it TOOLS™, Transforming Organizations’ Operations and Leadership Strategies. TOOLS™ assists diverse construction firms increase their capacity to bid on, win and manage construction contracts through business assistance, training and focused individualized support. She has provided her program to the city of Chicago, the Chicago Department of Aviation and the Illinois Tollway.

TOOLS™ can be implemented in any state, city or municipality and Stantley’s firm is for hire. Its services can be procured by government, at any level, be it an agency like a transportation department, housing department or any department that has construction projects and has mandates for the inclusion of minority firms on their projects.

“Generally, the large primes, the big firms who win the multi-million-dollar contracts, have minority participation goals. Most are unable to find a pool of candidates who understand the inner workings of the commercial industry to win contracts with them to achieve their goals. They are the key buyers of our services as they are charged with the inclusion of minorities on contracts they win. And we are for hire,” says Stantley.

“Cities across America can no longer sit by as billions of dollars of construction is taking place and not have minority construction firms involved in those projects. Even before the recently signed massive $1.2 trillion dollar infrastructure bill, many cities were slated to spend billions on roads and bridges, airports and a myriad of other types of building projects. And unless and until diverse firms gain a greater understanding of what it takes to operate in this arena, they will never gain access to even a portion of these contracts,” Stantley adds.

TOOLS™ offers its services free to minority construction firms, who are generally struggling to stay afloat, which is why the program seeks its funding from government, prime contractors, developers and philanthropists to make its services available to the minority owners. While many minority owners may have not obtained advanced degrees, their ability to perform their trade is unquestionable. Stantley believes what they need is what TOOLS™ provides, preparation so they can have a real shot at achieving the American dream.

Nationally, there are appropriately 750,000 minority firms who generate less than $500,000 of revenue annually each. These are the firms we want to support, “by expanding their capacity, we can increase their employee count 200-300% and add exponentially to the improvement of the lives of all they impact.”

BE Group, also publishes Building Entrepreneur magazine a valuable resource providing businesses information and later this year, the Group is launching a portal, Building Entrepreneurs, where businesses can promote their operations to an audience of project owners and others interested in identifying and connecting with them.

Biden Administration Briefs TikTok Influencers On War in Ukraine

Biden Administration Briefs TikTok Influencers On War in Ukraine

President Biden’s administration had a special briefing with TikTok influencers in hopes of helping inform Gen Z on the war in Ukraine.

Last week, the White House held a virtual meeting with TikTok influencers to brief them on the war in Ukraine, The Washington Post reports. During the meeting, National Security Council staffers and White House press secretary Jen Psaki educated the influencers about the US government’s aid to Ukrainians, work with NATO, and how the administration would respond to Russian use of nuclear weapons.

“The best antidote to disinformation is the truth,” Psaki told the influencers.

Among the 30 influencers invited to the meeting were self-described “Gen-Z Historian” Kahlil Greene, who has over 500,000 followers, news TikToker Marcus DiPaola, who has over 3.5 million followers, and Ukrainian-born news TikToker Jules Suzdaltsev, The Washington Post reports.

“TikTok is a really good platform for news, which is to say that there are a lot of really talented news creators on the app,” Suzdaltsev said.

During the briefing, influencers were encouraged to ask questions and provide “fresh ideas from you guys about how we can win the information war on social media.”

Greene reportedly wasn’t surprised that he received an invite to the briefing, Forbes reports.

“People in my generation get all our information from TikTok,” Greene said.

“It’s the first place we’re searching up new topics and learning about things.”

With the growing popularity of TikTok, popular accounts can make a living for themselves just by making videos. Accounts with over 1 million followers can earn between $1,000 to $30,000 a month.

Rob Flaherty, White House digital strategy director, said TikTok is “critically important” for sharing updates with millions of people online.

“An astonishing amount of people are learning about the invasion of Ukraine through digital creators who have begun to cover it,” Flaherty tweeted on Friday.

“We take that really seriously and are working to make sure those creators have the ability to have their q’s answered.”

St. Louis Woman Had ‘Terrified’ Call With Mom Before Being Abducted in Dallas, ‘He Won’t Let Me Leave’

St. Louis Woman Had ‘Terrified’ Call With Mom Before Being Abducted in Dallas, ‘He Won’t Let Me Leave’

A St. Louis woman is missing and hasn’t been seen since getting off a train in Dallas on March 2.

Dana Holt, 30, boarded an Amtrak train at the Gateway Transportation Center in downtown St. Louis around 7 p.m. on March 1, Fox K4C reports. She arrived at the Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station in Dallas the following day around noon. It was the last time she was seen alive.

“It’s so scary to know that she’s thousands of miles somewhere, and I have no clue where, and I cannot help her,” Dana’s older sister, Audrey Clay, said.

Video shows a man meeting Holt at the station and walking out of view with her.

“He approaches Dana and helps my sister with her bags. Then, they walked to the south end of the platform and go off-camera,” Clay said. “That was it. I haven’t seen the footage yet.”

Holt’s mother, Deborah, says she last spoke to her daughter on March 2, and Dana sounded “terrified.”

“She sounded terrified and scared,” Deborah said.

“I was like, ‘where are you?’ She was like, ‘Oh my gosh. He’s getting out of the shower. I got to go.’ That was it. I didn’t get to say I love you or anything.”

After learning about the surveillance video, Clay, her wife, and sister-in-law drove hours from Missouri to Dallas to look for Holt themselves, NBC DFW reports. They scoured the train station and surrounding areas with fliers raising awareness on Holt’s active missing person’s case.

She is described as blonde, light-skinned, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighs about 270 pounds. She has a tattoo on both her chest and neck.

Police are aiding in the search in hopes of locating Holt. Her family says she has mental illness and medical issues that add stress to their frantic search for her.

“If my sister sees this, I want her to know I love her. I never would imagine I’d be doing this. Never,” Clay said. “She’s my only sibling, and I won’t stop looking for her.”

Black Tesla Employee, a War Blast Victim, Says White Workers Tormented Him With Rocket Warning Sounds

Black Tesla Employee, a War Blast Victim, Says White Workers Tormented Him With Rocket Warning Sounds

Another Black worker is suing the tech giant Tesla, claiming white workers tormented him with ringtones set to sound like incoming-rocket warnings, among other race-based abuses.

The Mercury News reported that Marcellous Cage in his lawsuit says he was fired for racist reasons and for reporting life-threatening safety violations.

“Mr. Cage was fired for two reasons: his commitment to safety and his race,” the lawsuit filed in Alameda County Superior Court claimed

According to the suit, Cage was hired in November 2018 as a project-quality manager working in two Tesla factories. About a month into the position, he noticed a white Tesla contractor he was working with had a ringtone that was similar to the rocket-warning alert Cage experienced while he was working in Afghanistan.

Cage explained to the contractor, in front of several coworkers, why the ringtone bothered him. Caged added that he was twice injured in the country due to explosions.

The contractor refused Cage’s request to change the ringtone and instead kept it to torment Cage. Soon after, a white superintendent and other white workers set their phones to the same tone to harass Cage.

In another factory Cage worked in ,swastikas and the N-word were carved and written in the bathroom walls through Cage’s employment, which Tesla ignored .The suit also states, less than a month after Cage began working at Tesla, a white superintendent accused Cage of stealing stickers from him. Making matters worse, instead of asking Cage about it, several workers broke into Cage’s locked filing cabinet “on a vigilante mission to purportedly look for the missing stickers,” the suit claims. When Cage complained to managers, he was ignored

Cage added when he was working on a project due to regulation issues, a contractor threatened to beat him up. While questioning an expense report, Cage’s supervisor made a racist reference to barbecue.

Tesla has made several large payouts to other former Black employees who sued the tech company claiming many of the same issues as Cage. Last year a federal jury ordered Tesla to pay Owen Diaz $137 million after he sued, claiming other colleagues repeatedly called him racial slurs. Diaz added the Tesla plant was a culture where employees drew swastikas and racist terms in bathroom stalls and left derogatory drawings of Black children around the plant.

The company also paid $1 million to Melvin Berry, who sued Tesla in 2021 because the company failed to stop his supervisors from calling him the N-word.

Racial discrimination lawsuits have become so common at the tech giant, the state of California threatened to sue it earlier this year. In addition, Valarie Capers Workman, one of Tesla’s highest-ranking Black women, left the company earlier this year.

Delta Passenger Plans To Sue Airline After Being Kicked Out For ‘Offensive’ Sweater

Delta Passenger Plans To Sue Airline After Being Kicked Out For ‘Offensive’ Sweater

A passenger on a March 9 Delta Air Lines flight to Los Angeles was kicked off the plane for wearing what was considered to be offensive attire.

Jauneil Brooks was removed from the aircraft for wearing and refusing to remove a sweater that read “F— Biden,” and in smaller print underneath, “And f— you for voting for him!” The Post Millennial reports.

After initially being difficult about wearing a face mask to board the plane, airline officials took deeper offense to the hoodie he wore as the passenger began recording the incident on TikTok.

In the video, a Delta official explains the situation and the company policy; if he did not place his hoodie inside out to obscure the profane language, he would have to disembark the flight and be placed on an indefinite “no-fly” list.

According to Delta’s contract of carriage, the airline may refuse transport and removal of any passenger from the aircraft at any point, namely “When the passenger’s conduct, attire, hygiene or odor creates an unreasonable risk of offense or annoyance to other passengers.”

Self-described as “just a kid who loves his Country & Horses,” Brooks complies and flips his hoodie inside out. “It’s off,” he says. “I’m gonna go sit down. Whatever you guys say to me will be recorded, and you guys can get sued.”

However, in another video, the same airline official comes back to his seat and kicks him off for good.

“So I’m still getting kicked off the plane?” Brooks asks in the video. “Yeah, you’re not putting… you’re not wearing the mask,” the flight attendant responded. “I’m relaying the message to you what the captain says; he said he doesn’t want you on the aircraft anymore.”

After disembarking the plane, you overhear him being told he would receive a refund for the airfare.

Brooks now plans to sue Delta Air Lines. He also told The Post Millennial that he intends to continue to stand for our freedom of speech and take back Americans’ freedoms.

‘Rich Auntie Lifestyle’: Mary J. Blige Explains Why She’s Not Having Kids

‘Rich Auntie Lifestyle’: Mary J. Blige Explains Why She’s Not Having Kids

In a recent interview during her latest hot streak, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, candidly shared why she has chosen not to have children.

Besides the luxuries of her current lifestyle, Blige’s first and foremost point was how she doesn’t “want to have to tend to someone all the time.”

Fresh off having released her 15th studio album, Good Morning Gorgeous, which encapsulates her journey into self-love, many were left wondering why this incredibly talented, independent Grammy Award-winning woman had yet to settle down and have kids.

“I’m not there yet, so I’m good,” she told E! News’ Daily Pop. “Listen, I have nieces and nephews forever. And I’m always watching how people are scrambling around for babysitters. I don’t wanna go through that. I like my freedom.”

The 51-year-old R&B superstar revealed her motherhood status just days before taking the stage and giving fans a dazzling performance alongside fellow hip-hop legends Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and Eminem at Super Bowl LVI’s halftime show.

“I like being able to get up and go and move and do what I wanna do,” she continued adamantly in the brief clip. “I don’t think it’s [having children] gonna happen.”

Blige was formerly a stepmom to her ex-husband Kendu Issacs’ multiple children from other relationships.

Following her performance at the Super Bowl and wrapping season 2 of Power Book II, the “Be Without You” singer announced the “Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit” in partnership with Live Nation Urban. The three-day festival will take place in Atlanta on Mother’s Day weekend, May 6-8, 2022.

With her success on Good Morning Gorgeous, her upcoming performance at the 2022 NAACP Awards, and executive producing a Lifetime movie based on her music, and the creation of a festival and summit, Blige’s healing journey has been nothing but abundant.

It looks like the freedom and independence necessary to live the “rich auntie lifestyle” agrees with Blige.

Young Thug’s Baby’s Mother Fatally Shot Over Bowling Ball

Young Thug’s Baby’s Mother Fatally Shot Over Bowling Ball

Atlanta police are searching for a male suspect who fatally shot a woman believed to be rapper Young Thug’s baby mama following a dispute over a bowling ball.

LaKevia Jackson, 31, was shot and killed at Metro Fun Center in southwest Atlanta, on Thursday night, CBS 46 reported. Police say Jackson was attending her best friend’s birthday celebration at the bowling alley and got into a physical altercation that resulted in gunfire.

A friend of Jackson’s mother said after LaKevia got into a fight over the bowling ball, the suspect waited in the parking lot for 20 minutes before shooting her while she was leaving.

“I didn’t know that was going to be the last time I talked to my baby,” LaKavia’s mother, Sherina Jackson, said. “I could hear her over the phone crying and screaming then her best friend said, ‘She’s not breathing!’”

“I lost my baby all over a bowling ball,” Jackson added.

Investigators say they only have one male suspect at this time, WSB-TV reported. Police are using surveillance video of the incident, ballistic evidence, and several cooperating eyewitnesses.

“This is truly an atrocity. A young lady has lost her life over a bowling ball,” APD Homicide Commander Lt. Ralph Woolfolk said.

“We talk about conflict-resolution time and time again and this is an escalated dispute so we will work this case through the night and we will find the person responsible. We know who you are, so go ahead and turn yourself in.”

Woolfolk was upset about the latest incident of gun violence as the city deals with an increase in violent crime. Last month, police said homicides were up 41 percent, as noted by Fox 5 Atlanta.

APD hasn’t released the identity or details about the suspected shooter, because they believe they are close to an arrest. Jackson is said to be the mother of one of Young Thug’s six kids, Revolt reported.

He said he plans to build his own city with the 100 acres of land in Atlanta that was gifted to him by his manager Geoff Ogunlesi when he turned 30-years old.

Arizona Police Officer Who Held Black Hotel Employee at Gunpoint While Looking for White Suspect Gives Up Peace Officer Certification

Arizona Police Officer Who Held Black Hotel Employee at Gunpoint While Looking for White Suspect Gives Up Peace Officer Certification

Nearly two years ago, an Arizona police officer held a Black hotel worker at gunpoint when he arrived at the business establishment looking for an armed white man. He has now relinquished his Arizona peace officer certification following that incident.

According to Fox 10 Phoenix, former police officer Ronald A. Kerzaya has given up his Arizona peace officer certification without admitting any misconduct or failure to meet minimum qualifications.

Based on documents Fox 10 Phoenix obtained from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, the decision made by Kerzaya will be entered into the National Decertification Index. The database is maintained by the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training. The decision will be inputted as a voluntary relinquishment.

Kerzaya will no longer be able to become a peace officer in Arizona.

The former police officer signed the document on Feb. 11, 2022, and his attorney  Dale Norris did so on Feb. 20, 2022. The decision was accepted at an Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board meeting on March 16, 2022.

Last year, Kerzaya was reassigned due to the incident that took place. He stopped and held a gun pointed at the Black hotel worker wearing a light gray shirt and black pants, telling him he matched the description of a reported gunman. But, the reported suspect was described as white, with a black shirt and tan pants.

Based on a news release from the Tempe Police Department, Officer Kerzaya had gone to the Hawthorn Suites hotel near Loop 101 and Southern Avenue on Aug. 29 on a call reporting a man there with a gun. The hotel manager told Kerzaya the suspect was a white man wearing a black T-shirt and tan pants. The manager stated that the suspect had left out of the west side of the building.

As Kerzaya went to the west side of the building, he encountered a Black employee wearing a light gray shirt and black pants as he was exiting the building and the Black man identified himself as an employee. Kerzaya then held the man at gunpoint “until he could confirm that he was an employee of the hotel.”

The body camera footage released by the Tempe Police Department shows Kerzaya holding the man at gunpoint for three minutes while confirming with dispatch that the man was an employee at the hotel. Kerzaya can be heard telling the Black employee, “I am responding to somebody with a firearm who matches your description,” although Kerzaya had just confirmed with the hotel manager two minutes before encountering the Black employee that the suspect with the gun was a white man.

Black Media Mogul Byron Allen Seeks Billions In Fraud Lawsuit Against Nielsen

Black Media Mogul Byron Allen Seeks Billions In Fraud Lawsuit Against Nielsen

Media mogul Byron Allen has filed a lawsuit against Nielsen seeking billions in damages for alleged fraudulent misrepresentation.

According to Deadline, Allen’s suit claims the way Nielsen has measured television viewing was unreliable for Allen’s Entertainment Studios Networks (ESN) due to their limited distribution. Additionally, the suit claims Nielsen knew its system was unreliable but hid the fact to do business with the Allen Media Group, which paid millions in fees.

“This lawsuit is about Nielsen’s outdated, unreliable and broken television ratings service, and the resulting harm suffered by media companies who rely on Nielsen to sell ad time,” the complaint states.

Nielsen has been pushed for years to change its metrics. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed deep issues with Neisen’s systems, including its inability to get its measurement equipment out into the field. Late last year, the Media Ratings Council (MRC) suspended Nielsen’s accreditation for national ratings.

In response, Nielsen has promised to begin rolling out an enhanced set of measurement tools by the end of 2022. Allen’s networks, Comedy.TV, Recipe.TV and MyDestination.TV weren’t rated by Nielsen for years and to get rated, they were forced to pay millions. After agreeing to pay the fees in 2017, Allen’s networks, Allen said the data was far from what was expected and promised by Nielsen .

Allen’s suit, filed in the circuit court of Illinois, seeks a jury trial and is asking for a “reformation of contract” meaning a cheaper price for Nielsen ‘s services, which does not have the same standing from the MRC.

Nielsen began providing ESN with ratings reports in 2017, however, “Nielsen did not capture these viewers for much of the reporting period and for many of the primetime slots. Because advertisers condition payments for commercials on the number of viewers who watch commercials, Nielsen’s failure to capture viewership on the ESN Networks damaged Entertainment Studios,” the suit states.

“When Entertainment Studios complained to Nielsen about its failures, Nielsen dissembled, defending its panel model and boasting that it is the “gold standard” in the industry. Nielsen did not disclose what it already knew—that its rating services were fundamentally unreliable.”

Allen has sued several other well-known companies including General Motors and Mcdonald’s and Comcast Cable for their lack of advertising with Black businesses and racial discrimination.

Gospel Star Tasha Cobbs Leonard Becomes First Female Recipient of The Athlete’s Foot StAART Program

The specialty footwear and lifestyle chain, The Athlete’s Foot (TAF) announced GRAMMY-winning gospel artist turned entrepreneur, Tasha Cobbs Leonard as the first female recipient of TAF USA’s new signature program, StAART which stands for Strategic African American Retail Track. The program was founded by TAF, in the summer of 2020 at the height of the Black Lives Matter Movement to generate awareness and promote change for one of the great disparities in the footwear industry.

“Grateful is the word that comes to mind when I explore my feelings about my new venture with The Athlete’s Foot. I’m grateful that I have an opportunity to be a leader and an example that black and brown girls need in order to believe they can be whatever they want to be,” shares Tasha Cobbs Leonard about her next chapter as a franchise owner, according to a press release.

The multi-award-winning singer currently owns several successful lifestyle brands and with a passion for the fashion and clothing industry, the self-professed “sneakerhead” is now taking on the footwear world. As a new franchise owner of The Athlete’s Foot, Cobbs-Leonard is currently scouting locations for her store which will be located in her hometown of Greenville, S.C. and giving the city its first TAF.

“We sought to bring a powerful black female entrepreneur into The Athlete’s Foot community and I could not think of a better person to fill this spot than Tasha,” said Senior Director of Product and Marketing for TAF, Darius Billings.

“Everyone at The Athlete’s Foot knows firsthand what kind of impact she can provide to our business and especially the StAART program and we are excited for everyone else to witness it.”

StAART’s mission is to increase African American representation and ownership within the sneaker industry, particularly through franchising, while championing Black-owned retail and entrepreneurship within the Black community at large. Through StAART, The Athlete’s Foot directly recruits, develops and mentors Black entrepreneurs through its retail franchise model. The program provides StAART franchisees, including Cobbs-Leonard, with access to resources, systems, relationships with its strategic brand partners and a mentorship network — directly addressing many of the barriers that typically prevent Black entrepreneurs from launching and successfully sustaining their businesses.

TAF USA has curated a StAART advisory council that includes key influencers within the sneaker industry as well as professional and community organizations that can lend additional support in making StAART a success. For example, The Athlete’s Foot has strategic partnerships with several key organizations such as T. Dallas Smith & Company, the largest African American-owned commercial real estate brokerage firm in the country that focuses exclusively on tenant and buyer representation.
