Voters Are Suing The USPS And Trump Over Changes Ahead Of Election

Four voters from different states are suing President Donald Trump, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).

According to Politico, the voters filed their suit in federal court in Washington D.C., due to changes within the agency that voters say are infringing on their right to vote. The plaintiffs believe DeJoy and Trump are conspiring to undermine the November presidential election by incapacitating the Postal Service.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, an unprecedented number of voters are expected to mail in their ballots. However, the USPS warned multiple states last week that ballots may not be delivered in time to be counted based on current service expectations and state deadlines. All four plaintiffs said they did not receive absentee ballots in time to mail in their votes for their states’ primaries.

The plaintiffs, who reside in New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Indiana, are suing to reverse several of DeJoy’s changes to the USPS., which include eliminating all overtime and removing sorting machines.

In addition to reinstating both, the plaintiffs are also seeking a court order barring Trump and DeJoy “from engaging in any further attempt to deny [the plaintiffs] the right to mail in their vote.”

Trump has been fighting mail-in voting despite having participating in multiple elections by mail. The voters, however, allege that Trump is trying to stop mail-in voting to boost his chances of reelection.

“In short, DeJoy, doing Trump’s public bidding, has ensured even greater chaos in the Fall elections, putting his thumb on the electoral scales to help ensure Trump’s reelection and/or provide grounds for an election contest–not to mention helping Trump sow doubt in the minds of Americans about the integrity of the electoral process and the outcome itself, a loathsome tactic once associated only with tin-horn dictators and banana republics,” the voters wrote in their complaint.

Voting and Living for Seniors Compromised

The plaintiffs also wrote in their suit that they believe a gutted USPS would force them to vote in person during the middle of a pandemic. This could affect those that are living with someone who may be significantly vulnerable to the coronavirus.

The plaintiffs aren’t the only ones asking questions. AARP’s top lobbyist, Nancy LeaMond, sent a letter to DeJoy on Monday urging him to suspend changes to the Postal Service that are disrupting mail delivery.

“We urge you to suspend any adjustments that could negatively affect service during the pandemic,” LeaMond said. “Further, we urge the Postal Service to be more forthcoming and transparent regarding any changes, including a more detailed cost-benefit analysis of the operational changes you have made and will be making to assure timely delivery of all mail, including election-related mail.”

LeaMond said the organization, which has 38 million members, is particularly concerned that DeJoy’s changes may be “compromising the health and safety of millions of older Americans and may unduly restrict the ability of all Americans to safely participate in the upcoming elections.”

The letter adds that many older Americans rely on the USPS  to deliver their prescriptions and other necessities so that they can avoid unnecessary trips outside of the house during the pandemic. Going out to vote poses an additional risk for seniors.

DeJoy has agreed to testify before Congress on changes to the Postal Service and the agency announced on Monday it will discontinue any changes until after the election.

Congressional GOP Candidate Kimberly Klacik: ‘Black Lives Don’t Matter To Democrats’

The fight to fill the congressional seat held by the late Congressman Elijah Cummings in Maryland’s 7th district has taken a turn.

Republican strategist and congressional GOP candidate Kimberly Klacik released an ad earlier this week blasting the Black Lives Matter movement and Democrats in a video titled “Black Lives Don’t Matter To Democrats,” according to The Daily Wire.

In the ad, Klacik states, “Democrats don’t want you to see this. They’re scared that I’m exposing what life is like in Democrat-run cities. That’s why I’m running for Congress. Because All Black Lives Matter. Baltimore Matters. And black people don’t have to vote Democrat.”

Earlier this year, Klacik, who describes herself as pro-Trump, won the Republican primary in a bid to represent the Maryland district that was once held by Cummings. She is running for the seat against Democratic candidate, Kweisi Mfume, who ran the NAACP from 1996 to 2004. He easily beat Klacik for the heavily Democratic 7th Congressional District in a special election after Cummings’ death. Mfume held the seat for a decade before resigning to lead the NAACP.

“Baltimore has been run by the Democrat Party for 53 years,” she says in the video. “What is the result of their decades of leadership? Baltimore is one of the top five most dangerous cities in America. The murder rate in Baltimore is ten times the U.S. average. The Baltimore poverty rate is over 20%. Homicide, drug, and alcohol deaths are skyrocketing in our city.

“Do you believe black lives matter? I do. The vast majority of crime in Baltimore is perpetrated against black people, who make up 60% of the population. So why don’t we care about our communities?” she asks.

President Donald Trump has thrown his full support behind Klacik.

If Klacik wins the election, she would not only become the first woman, but also the first Republican, to represent the district.

Black-Owned Title Insurance Company Closes $30 Million Affordable Housing Deal

Black-Owned Title Insurance Company Closes $30 Million Affordable Housing Deal

Previously, we reported on the success of father and son duo, Osei and Nadir Rubie, who own a title insurance agency, National Standard Abstract (NSA), known as one of the largest Black-owned companies in the industry with over a billion dollars in real estate deals.

Recently they made headlines again by closing an affordable housing deal worth $30 million.

The new deal, overseen developed by CB Emmanuel Realty, LLC, will consist of a seven-story residential building with 71 units including 55 studios, 14 one-bedroom units, and two two-bedroom units in New York’s Brownsville neighborhood in Brooklyn. All of the residences will catering low-income families but provide upscale amenities, including a landscaped garden and a green rood with solar panels.

The partnership is working with the HPD Supportive Housing Loan Program (SHLP) to underwrite the project and offer more accessible homes for marginalized groups.

“In our five-plus years of operation, a common question posed to us is ‘How do we engage National Standard Abstract to provide title insurance for our project or transaction?'” said Nadir Rubie, partner, National Standard Abstract, in an interview with Shoppe Black. “As an MBE NYC Certified firm, our credentials are inclusive of City-funded commercial real estate projects as well as market-rate development projects.”

The Rubies are also known for the charitable efforts. Through their Osei Rubie Charitable Fund, the company has awarded over $100,000 to numerous organizations dedicated to advancing social change and justice for the Black community since 2015.

“It is our responsibility to provide opportunities for other minority-owned firms that we know engage, inspire, and empower people of African descent in the community,” said Christopher Bramwell, managing member, CB Emmanuel Realty, LLC to Shoppe Black. “National Standard Abstract (NSA) has demonstrated this philosophy in action after every transaction they complete. For that reason, we hire NSA to provide title insurance for all of our real estate transactions.”

Study: Black Newborns More Likely To Survive With Black Doctors

Study: Black Newborns More Likely To Survive With Black Doctors

A study published Monday showed Black newborns are more likely to survive during childbirth when cared for by Black doctors.

According to The Hill, the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found Black babies were three times more likely to die in a hospital than White newborns when cared for by White doctors. The mortality rate of Black newborns dropped by between 39 percent and 58 percent when Black physicians were in charge of the birth.

“Strikingly, these effects appear to manifest more strongly in more complicated cases, and when hospitals deliver more Black newborns,” the authors wrote. “The findings suggest that Black physicians outperform their White colleagues when caring for Black newborns.”

To conduct the study, researchers analyzed 1.8 million hospital birth records in Florida between 1992 and 2015 and determined the race of the doctors responsible for each infant. The researchers determined the difference in mortality rates were mostly due to “racial concordance between the physician and newborn patient.”

The study follows a separate study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released last year that showed Black babies were more than twice as likely to die before their first birthday, even when accounting for a mother’s income and education levels.

The U.S. is ahead of three other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries when it comes to infant mortality–Turkey, Mexico, and Chile.

More than 22,000 infant deaths were reported in 2017 before they reached their first birthday, and according to the CDC, Black babies died at double the rate of White, Asian or Latin infants.

Researchers did not give reasons behind the trend, but wrote: “Taken with this work, it gives warrant for hospitals and other care organizations to invest in efforts to reduce such biases and explore their connection to institutional racism.

“Reducing racial disparities in newborn mortality will also require raising awareness among physicians, nurses, and hospital administrators about the prevalence of racial and ethnic disparities.”

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Arrested and Charged With Felony Murder For Killing Black Man

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Arrested and Charged With Felony Murder For Killing Black Man

A Georgia State Patrol trooper was arrested last week and charged with felony murder after he fatally shot a Black man during an attempted traffic stop earlier this month, according to CNN.

The trooper, 27-year-old Jacob Gordon Thompson, who was arrested last Friday due to the fatal officer-involved shooting, has been fired from the Department of Public Safety, Georgia State Patrol.

In coordination with the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit, Thompson has been charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. The investigation conducted, supports the charges, and is active and ongoing.

The original press release gave details of the shooting.

“On Friday, August 7, 2020, at approximately 9:20 PM, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) to investigate an officer-involved shooting.

“Preliminary information shows that a trooper attempted to stop a Nissan Sentra for a traffic-related offense on Stoney Pond Road in Screven County. The car refused to stop and led the trooper on a brief chase down several county roads. The trooper initiated a Precision Intervention Technique (PIT) and the car came to a stop in the ditch. The trooper fired one round, striking Julian Edward Roosevelt Lewis, age 60. Lewis was pronounced deceased on scene. An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab.”

In a statement released by the shooting victim’s family, his widow Betty Lewis said, “I want justice for Julian. He was too good to die as he did. This is one step towards justice.”

“The unprecedented pace of the investigation is a direct result of years of activism on these issues along with a sea-change in law enforcement leadership at the top of the GBI. This was not business as usual. The GBI and now the FBI who have launched a separate civil rights investigation have done what was right at this stage. I rarely get to say that,” said Statesboro Civil Rights Attorney Francys Johnson.

US Virgin Islands Closes Leisure Travel After Recent Spike In COVID-19 Cases

US Virgin Islands Closes Leisure Travel After Recent Spike In COVID-19 Cases

The travel sector has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in June, the U.S. Virgin Islands, among other Caribbean islands, announced plans to re-open for the summer season. This week, the U.S. Virgin Islands announced it will be closing the island again to leisure travel for at least one month, starting on Aug. 19 amid a recent spike in COVID-19 cases across the territory. The mandate prohibits hotels, Airbnb accommodations, and other short-term rentals from accepting any new reservations for 30 days.

“When we announced our COVID-19 alert system in May, I indicated at that time that we would retreat … to a more cautious state of alert if conditions warranted. Unfortunately, we have arrived at that point this week,” said Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. in a press conference, according to Travel Daily News.

“The recent infiltration of the virus into our residential institutions that house vulnerable members of our population creates an alarming level of risk. This adds to the stress of the ongoing pandemic response that seemingly has no end in sight and is wearing out our health care and public safety infrastructure.”

Business travelers will still be allowed to make reservations for travel in addition to emergency personnel, government workers, and flight crew members. Local restaurants will also only be able to open for takeout, delivery, or drive-through for the remainder of August.

“We appreciate the concerns of our tourism partners and stakeholders, however, with the recent spike in cases we are seeing, especially in the St. Thomas-St. John district, we must reset, take stock, safeguard human life, and prepare for restarting our tourism economy at a later date,” Commissioner of Tourism Joseph Boschulte tells the Caribbean Journal on the subject stating that is was a “difficult but necessary decision” to make.

‘The Real’ Talk Show Hosts Jeannie Mai and Adrienne Houghton to Introduce Black Business Shopping Hauls

‘The Real’ Talk Show Hosts Jeannie Mai and Adrienne Houghton to Introduce Black Business Shopping Hauls

In light of the protests over police brutality, many people are having conversations centered around race relations within the U.S and have decided to use their platforms to shine a light on Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.

The Real‘s Jeannie Mai and Adrienne Houghton decided it was important for influencers with large followings like themselves to use their platforms to support other creators. Both will debut their shopping hauls featuring Black businesses in partnership with entertainment company Kin.

The Emmy-winning daytime television hosts will host separate shopping hauls through their popular YouTube channels highlighting Black-owned businesses they each enjoy.

“To be very honest, it’s something I learned we as influencers should have BEEN supporting and promoting. I never really took a responsible look at my platform as a personality on social media and television. I have a privilege of speaking to an audience and influencing my fans to trust and buy into what I support,” says Mai in an email interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“My whole childhood I have been inspired by Black culture. I attribute a lot of my style and swag to the Black culture. Which is why I also need to be proactive about the need for change. I need to speak up against system oppression and injustice. And I need to be responsible as a consumer to promote Black entrepreneurs and business owners to help the community flourish.”

“I found myself purchasing [items] from Black-owned businesses throughout the last two months and [there are] Black-owned businesses that I have been a fan of prior [to these events] that I have mentioned on All Things Adrienne and I decided to bring more attention to them,” Houghton tells BLACK ENTERPRISE via email. “I thought it would be a fun way to get the messaging out there and explain why its so important to support Black-owned businesses and to continue to bring money into the Black community so we can level the playing field.”

Some of the brands to be featured on the upcoming specials will include Mess in a Bottle, the Beauty Bakerie, The Lip Bar, Eternally In Amber, and Sole’s Pickles set to premiere on August 20th on Mai’s YouTube show, Hello Hunnay with Jeannie Mai. Adrienne’s episode is scheduled for a later date in September on her show, All Things Adrienne. Both segments will also be available through Facebook Watch and IGTV.

“Supporting Black businesses is strong way to close the racial wealth gap. Big companies have a history of oppressing small businesses and putting a heavy burden on low-income communities. Take a look at Amazon’s presence in Seattle,” continued Mai. “Amazon’s dominance caused rising housing costs and pushed out local mom-and-pop shops. When we support local Black businesses, we strengthen local economies, foster new jobs within the community, and celebrate Black culture within our households and conversations. And it’s a joy for me to share the products I use on daily to look good and feel great.”

America’s Oldest Living Person is a Black Woman Who Celebrated Her 116th Birthday

America’s Oldest Living Person is a Black Woman Who Celebrated Her 116th Birthday

America’s oldest living person is a Black woman who just celebrated her 116th birthday in Charlotte, North Carolina, last week, according to WBTV in North Carolina.

Hester Ford, who turned 116 on Aug. 13, had a celebration over the weekend where she was wheeled out to the door of her home so she could be celebrated by friends, family, and her community. Due to the coronavirus, family, and friends put on a drive-by party on Saturday.

As of today, Ford is No. 21 on the all-time list of living longevity. Sarah Knauss, from Hollywood, Pennsylvania, who lived until she was 119 years and 97 days, is at the top of the list.

“We are honored and we just thank God for the opportunity to celebrate her,” said Mary Hill, one of Hester Ford’s 68 grandchildren. “She just continues to be a blessing to us. And she tells us all the time. You are here to be a blessing to someone else.”

Another remarkable feat that Ford has accomplished is living through different pandemics. She survived living through the 1918 Flu Pandemic and the current 2020 COVID-19) pandemic.

According to Ford’s family, U.S. Census Bureau documents have indicated that she was born in 1905, but another set of Census Bureau documents states that she was born in 1904. Whichever year she was actually born still places her as the oldest person on record living in the United States, based on data compiled by the Gerontology Research Group.

BET reported that Charlotte’s mayor, Vi Lyles, officially declared Aug.15 ‘Mother Hester Ford Day,’ in honor of her 116th birthday.

“We just thank God for just keeping her here for us, because it gives us hope,” Hil, Ford’s granddaughter, told CBS Charlotte. “We would never want her to be here if she was sick. … We want her to have a great quality of life in her elder years. We don’t want her to be sick or anything, and trying to hold on.”

3 Mississippi Police Officers Charged With Second-Degree Murder in Death of a 62-Year-Old Black Man

3 Mississippi Police Officers Charged With Second-Degree Murder in Death of a 62-Year-Old Black Man

Three police officers in Jackson, Mississippi, who have been accused of causing the death of a 62-year-old Black man on Jan. 13, 2019, have now been charged with second-degree murder, according to WLBT.

The three police officers, Desmond Barney, Lincoln Lampley, and Anthony Fox, who all happen to also be Black, have been charged after a Hinds County grand jury accused them of “eminently dangerous” acts. All three have been charged with second-degree murder for the killing of George Robinson, 62, according to the Aug. 5 indictment.

The indictments state that the police officers either participated or assisted in physically removing Robinson from his vehicle, body-slamming him on his head, and striking and kicking him multiple times in the head and chest.

Barney and Lampley were both given $100,000 bond and Fox was given a $250,000 bond. All three posted bond last Thursday.

Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba issued a statement on the indictments on Thursday night.

“Our administration is committed to ensuring that Jacksonians have an accountable police department. As part of our accountability process, the City of Jackson has implemented a policy to turn all cases involving officer involved deaths over to the DA for review by a grand jury,” he said. “The Hinds County grand jury indictments, issued today, begin another phase of the process. In the full spirit of transparency, the administration will continue to monitor the situation and provide information to the public throughout each phase. We ask that you keep all those affected by this tragedy in your prayers.”

The coroner, Sharon Grisham-Stewart, had ruled the death a homicide by blunt force trauma. Meanwhile, the Jackson Police Department’s Internal Affairs stated they found no evidence of wrongdoing, nor did the FBI find any evidence of civil rights violations. The police officers were cleared by the city’s civil service commission to return to active duty.

“This is something that should have never been indicted, and every police officer that works particularly in Jackson and in this county could find themselves in this position,” said Francis Springer, one of the attorneys for the trio.

Brazilian Police Officer Faces Criminal Charges After Standing On 51-Year-Old Black Woman’s Neck

Brazilian Police Officer Faces Criminal Charges After Standing On 51-Year-Old Black Woman’s Neck

A harrowing incident caught on video this spring has had lasting repercussions in Brazil. Two police officers have been suspended and face criminal charges after one stood on a Black woman’s neck, according to Daily Mail.

The incident took place on May 30 in São Paulo. The video clip shows one of the officers standing on the 51-year-old woman’s neck. It was reported that the woman was trying to break up an altercation between a friend and the police.

The woman, a bar owner, had asked the police officer to stop hitting her friend before the officer decided to take action by standing on her neck. She was treated at a local hospital for a fractured tibia and had several cuts on her face and body that required 16 stitches.

The woman’s lawyer said she passed out four times during the sustained assault. The cops argued that she assaulted them with an iron rod.

After the video was released, São Paulo Governor João Doria said he was shocked by the action of the police officers.

“I want to make it clear that the State of São Paulo does not tolerate and will not tolerate any behavior that is violence practiced by the Military Police, the Civil Police, the fire department or any other police that is under the command of the State of São Paulo,” Doria said.

‘It is unacceptable that few compromise many. In other words, condemnable actions by a few compromise an organization with more than 80,000 police officers and who do their job well.’

Due to the incident, on June 22, the governor introduced a 20-day training program aimed at the prevention of the use of unnecessary force employed against civilians by “one percent of bad policemen.”

Starting in August, at least 2,000 police officers were scheduled to have body cameras as part of the initiative.
