Terrence Howard Ordered To Pay $1M In Taxes, Believes It’s ‘Immoral’ To Tax Slave Descendants

Terrence Howard has been ordered to pay nearly $1 million in back taxes after speaking out against "the descendants of slaves" paying taxes.

Actor Terrence Howard has been ordered to pay nearly $1 million in back taxes after expressing how “immoral” it is “for the United States government to charge taxes to the descendants of slaves.”

With the Oscar-nominated actor’s last known residence being listed in the Plymouth Meeting community of Philadelphia, a judge there has ordered him to pay the back taxes, interest, and penalties, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Howard, 54, is accused of rejecting IRS efforts to collect $578,000 in income taxes he failed to pay between 2010 and 2019. The Empire” star is said to have declined the collection efforts for more than a year.

Even after the Justice Department sued him in 2022 in hopes of taking the case to court, Howard is accused of only responding via a voicemail he left for the lead tax attorney in November where he denied the back owed funds and said slave descendants shouldn’t be expected to pay taxes. A transcript of the voicemail was included in the case filings.

“Four hundred years of forced labor and never receiving any compensation for it,” Howard allegedly said in the voicemail. “Now you have the gall to try and prosecute and charge taxes to the descendants of a broken people that you are responsible for causing the breakage.”

After the recording cut off midsentence, Howard called the attorney back to continue his rant.

“In truth, the entire United States should, by default, become the property of the descendants of slaves,” he said. “But since you do not have the ability [or] the courage to do it, let’s try this in court.…We’re gonna bring you down.”

Despite his threats, Howard failed to respond to the lawsuit, prompting a court hearing last week where U.S. District Judge John F. Murphy granted the government’s request to enter a $903,115 default judgment against the actor.

The Hustle & Flow star has a history of tax issues, including the $639,000 in tax liens that were recorded against the 2,450-square-foot property he owned in Plymouth Meeting in 2005 and 2006. He settled the liens, but in 2010 the IRS placed a $1.1 million lien on the property due to Howard’s failure to fulfill income tax obligations for 2007 and 2008.

In 2019, the State of California Franchise Tax Board issued an additional lien against Howard, claiming he owed $144,000 from as far back as 2010. That same year, federal prosecutors in Philadelphia launched a criminal investigation into Howard and his spouse, Mira Pak, for alleged tax evasion.

Last year, Howard was included on the board’s list of the state’s Top 500 tax delinquents, citing a total debt of $256,000 in overdue taxes, penalties, and fees. Recent reports include Howard among a star-studded cast set to appear in Peacock’s limited series Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist.

College Baseball Player Ejected From Game On A Goofy Technicality

The umpire relied on a rule that he enforced improperly.

A college baseball player was thrown out of a game after drawing a walk and walking to first base. Facing the opposing dugout, he threw his bat to the ground, prompting the home plate umpire to eject him.

According to Sports Illustrated, this incident occurred at the season-opening game for the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors versus the Ole Miss Rebels. The score was 4-3, and Jordan Donahue was at the plate, with runners on second and third base in the eighth inning. As he stood at the plate with a full count of three balls and two strikes, Donahue let the next pitch pass him for a fourth ball, allowing him to advance to first base. In a moment of joy, the player pumps his fist, looks toward the dugout, and seemingly yells in that direction before tossing his bat on the ground and proceeding to first base.

Upon viewing this, the home plate umpire walks behind him and throws him out of the game. Donahue looks back in shock and doesn’t understand why he is being ejected. As he stands in shock, the team manager speaks to the umpire, and after explaining his action, the manager walks away in disbelief.

According to the latest NCAA 2023 and 2024 Baseball Rule Book, under the “Unsportsmanlike Conduct” section, the umpire may have thrown him out of the game based on this rule: “Bat flips near or toward an opponent or umpire.”

But, it also states, “The umpire shall warn the offending individual and the coach once. If the unsportsmanlike conduct continues after the warning, the offender shall be ejected. If the unsportsmanlike conduct continues after the first ejection, the head coach shall be ejected along with any other offending personnel.”

It’s unclear from the video if it was the second time Donohue had done something to warrant an unsportsmanlike conduct warning.

The Rainbow Warriors lost the game in extra innings (13) by 5–4.

2 Brooklyn Men Arrested For Allegedly Stealing $20M In SNAP Benefits

Two people in Brooklyn were arrested and charged with trafficking and stealing millions of dollars in benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), according to the United States Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of New York.

The two suspects, 31-year-old Dawood Kassim (also known as “Badr al-din Kassim”) and 26-year-old Dia Alqalisi (also known as “Diaaldeen Alqalisi”), were arrested on Tuesday, Feb. 27. Another suspect has been indicted been has not been charged yet. The men are accused of siphoning $20 million from the program by allegedly engaging in thousands of SNAP transactions. The alleged illegal transactions occurred at a bodega that Kassim owns in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

“As alleged, the defendants trafficked and stole a massive amount of SNAP benefits from thousands of victims, illegally profiting from federally funded benefits intended for those in need of nutritious meals—which is especially vital in these times of high food costs,” United States Attorney Breon Peace said in a written statement. “The arrests today should be a wakeup call to those who think government programs are a piggy bank they can pillage without fear of consequences.”

The alleged fraud occurred between April 2022 through December 2022. The suspects allegedly conducted the SNAP transactions out of Throop Farm Market at the corner of Throop and Greene Avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant. They are accused of trafficking SNAP benefits by allowing customers who used SNAP to exchange those benefits for cash or for items they were not eligible to purchase with SNAP. The men kept a portion of the benefits for themselves as payment.

Kassim is also suspected of stealing SNAP benefits from unsuspecting customers when he used counterfeit and stolen SNAP EBT cards at the bodega. Some of the victims of the crimes included people who used SNAP benefits and lived in Tennessee, Virginia, and California, among other states. The transactions garnered the men over $20 million in federally funded SNAP benefits, including over $7 million worth of SNAP benefits from some people who did not live in New York.

Recipients of the SNAP Program use an EBT (electronic benefit transfer) card to purchase food and necessities for low-income individuals and families. The money comes from using federal funds from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky gave fans a glammed-out glimpse into their love life with Fenty Beauty's new short film.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky gave fans a glammed-out glimpse into their love life with Fenty Beauty’s new short film.

On Wednesday, February 28, Fenty Beauty released a short film titled Born to Steal: Yours, Mine, Ours” to promote its new Lux Balm. The nearly-two-minute short sees Rihanna and Rocky take on a 1920s-inspired love drama where the pop star steals Rocky’s clothes and his Fenty Lux Balm Ultra-Hyrdating Cherry Lip Balm.

A narrator guides viewers along the tale that shows the Fenty Beauty founder sneaking Rocky’s blazer out of his closet and hiding from him. Rihanna steals the covers during their night’s sleeping in bed together, before applying Fenty Skin’s Lux Balm to Rocky’s lips.

“The more savage of the species, the females are known to steal from the unsuspecting males,” the narrator says.

Towards the end of the short film, Rihanna nabs Rocky’s Lux Balm, but this time he catches her in the act.

“When I finally solved the case of my missing Lux Balm, I wasn’t surprised,” the voiceover concludes. “Not so fast, baby, this one’s mine.”

The new Lux Balm comes infused with vitamin E, shea butter, and Barbados cherry blended to hydrate dry lips. It’s the first time fans have seen A$AP Rocky join his spouse to help promote her thriving beauty brand.

The company teased stills from the ad on Instagram to get fans to go watch the YouTube short film and see Rihanna and Rocky display their “main character energy.”

Rihanna and Rocky share two sons: Rza, welcomed in May 2022; and Riot, welcomed in August 2023. Rihanna surprised fans when she announced her pregnancy during her 2023 Super Bowl halftime show, coming out in a red ensemble that displayed her growing baby bump.

Rocky has gushed about his happiness with fatherhood since welcoming their first son, Rza.

“It’s so unexplainable. It’s just one of those things. I’m a member of our club now, like the dad club. You see a dad, you see me. I’m playing on, I’m a full dad now,” he told People in January 2024. “Being outside and working and being creative, it drives more energy for you to obviously think and soak things up like a sponge now that I’m a dad, because I have a whole other perspective.”

“But it honestly helps you get home to your family and get home to your baby,” he continued. “And I can’t even explain it, man. You come home to heaven every day. I’m so thankful. God is good, man.”

Rihanna fans are anxiously awaiting new music from her, which Rocky recently teased that “she’s working on it.”

Georgia DA Fani Willis, Nathan Wade Affair Triggers Calls For Disbarment

The complaint states, Wade and "his incompetence poses to vulnerable members of the public requires his exclusion from the profession."

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and attorney Nathan Wade face ethics complaints alleging improprieties in their past relationship.

The American Accountability Foundation (AAF) has requested the Georgia State Bar revoke Willis’ law license and disbar Wade for allegedly lying under oath. According to Fox 5, the AAF cited Willis’ Feb. 15 testimony addressing cash reimbursements to Wade with no documented transactions.

When asked about the money’s origins, she replied: “Cash is fungible. I’ve had cash for years in my house. So for me to tell you the source of where it comes from … when you go to Publix, and you buy something, and you get 50 dollars, and you throw it in there. It’s been my whole life. When I took out a large amount of money during my first campaign, I kept some of the cash of that.”

The conservative opposition research group alleged the statement represents Willis admitting to misusing campaign finances for personal spending while Georgia Campaign Finance law prohibits candidates from utilizing campaign funds for non-campaign purposes like gifts or loans.

“The statute is unambiguous – and the facts are not in dispute – as Ms. Willis described in her testimony, she placed the money that was intended for her campaign into a “fungible” slush fund with other moneys that she would use for various other purposes, including reimbursing her boyfriend for leisure travel,” the AAF states in the complaint.

The complaint against Wade focuses on his sworn interrogatory during divorce proceedings, denying extramarital relations despite his affair with Willis. Wade claimed his marriage was already “irretrievably broken,” though not legally dissolved when he became involved with Willis. “First, it is simply not credible that Mr. Wade did not know that he had sexual relations with Ms. Willis when he replied to the interrogatories above in his divorce case,” the complaint argues.

Furthermore, the AAF alleges Wade’s flawed rationale around legal marriage demonstrates incompetence, posing risks to potential future clients. “The Bar owes the profession and the public a duty to guard the practice from charlatans and incompetents,” the complaint reads.

BLACK ENTERPRISE previously mentioned that Robin Bryant-Yeartie, a former friend of Willis, testified in a Feb. 15 hearing that the district attorney started dating Wade shortly after meeting at a 2019 conference. The date contradicted the 2021 date Wade stated in his testimony. The attorney’s ex-wife, Jocelyn, accused Willis of having an affair with Wade and allegedly using funds from Willis’ office for lavish trips.

History Documented: Meet Atlanta’s Beloved Photo Documentarian, Susan J. Ross

The Atlanta "photo-griot" describes herself primarily as "a people photographer, finding grace and dignity in the faces of our people.”

For 50 years, a petite, curly-haired photographer named Susan J. “Sue” Ross has documented Atlanta’s Black community through thousands of candid shots of leaders, artists, activists, musicians, and everyday people.

She calls herself a “cultural activist,” according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution‘s Natrice Miller, who connected with the cultural artist at a previous photo exhibition. Although Ross does not identify as an official member of the media, she has worked for the City of Atlanta supporting minority and women-owned businesses, capturing her beloved city, which she’s dubbed “Magical Atlanta.” Her website describes her as a “documentary photographer” and “photo-griot,” which in African heritage refers to the “oral historian holding the essence of African history and culture through the word.”

Ross moved from Connecticut as a child in the 1960s when her academic parents taught at Atlanta University, according to AJC . She lived among civil rights icons like the King kids, who were neighborhood friends and “regular family people,” Ross shared. “Yoki is Yolanda King, and she was the oldest of the four King children. Her younger brother Martin, who we called Marty growing up, and my brother were roughly the same age.”

The documentary photographer said she encourages young people today to “take pictures of the folks that they’re involved with, because you never know who is going to grow up to be the next leader in Atlanta or in the world.”

Observation is only a small part of Ross’ artistic eye. She also participates in the same spaces she photographs, like helping elect Atlanta’s first Black mayor, Maynard Jackson. Ross has documented key moments in Black history – from the ’96 Olympics to portraits of Nelson Mandela and former President Barack Obama. Her work resides in various collections, books, and her 2011 exhibition “Sankofa” at the National Black Arts Festival.

Now, Ross’ shots, boasting a “special connection” to everyday folks, are being preserved for future generations. The Atlanta photographer boasts an archive full of Atlanta’s young artists, campaign rallies, community discussions, and annual events. Ross is a founding member of Sistagraphy, a collective of Black women photographers who express themselves and share their passion for photography.

Jeffrey Osborne, sue, discrimination, can you woo woo woo, embarrassed, humiliated,

R&B Crooner Jeffrey Osborne Sued By 2 Fans Who Felt Shunned For ‘A White Person’

Jeffrey Osborne is being sued by two women who claim they were "embarrassed" by his "discriminatory behavior" at his concert last year.

Singer Jeffrey Osborne is being sued by two women who attended his concert last year and claim to have left feeling “embarrassed” and “humiliated” by his “discriminatory behavior.”

The Grammy-winning musician is named in a complaint filed in the Superior Court of California on Tuesday, February 27, by two women who accuse Osborne of intentionally inflicting emotional distress on them during his May 2023 concert at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, People reported. Danielle Buchanan and Maneva Currie said they were in the audience for Osborne’s concert on May 6, 2023, at the Greek Theater when the singer directed his team to find someone in the audience to help him sing his 1986 hit “You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song).”

Buchanan was selected to sing “Can you woo woo woo?” into the microphone and had the “camera directed” at her, according to the suit. She was “smiling and ready” to sing with her friend, Currie, recording the moment that was allegedly displayed on two large screens. However, the ladies claim that once Osborne saw who was selected to sing, he told the audience and his team “I want a white person.”

Buchanan claims she tried to make light of the situation by announcing on the mic, “I’m White.” However, Osborne’s team took away the mic and found someone else to sing the song. She and her friend claim they were left feeling “shocked, embarrassed and humiliated” by Osborne’s “discriminatory behavior.”

The lawsuit says the two friends were “even more emotionally disturbed,” by the incident and were unable to “enjoy” the rest of the concert.

“[Buchanan and Currie] left the concert emotionally disturbed,” the complaint states. “Based on the public humiliation, [they] were afraid to engage socially in their lives for months and eventually as a result of the pain and suffering, they had to seek psycho-therapy.”

Buchanan and Currie are suing Osborne and the Greek Theater, claiming the venue displayed negligence and violated the Unruh Civil Rights Act, which protects from discrimination by all business establishments in California. Buchanan claims to have contacted the Greek Theater about the incident after the concert and never received a response.

They are seeking punitive damages of over $2 million and a jury trial.

“As a result of Osborne’s negligent and discriminatory behavior, he has caused [the plaintiffs] damages,” the suit reads.

Jeffrey Osborne is a singer, songwriter, and musician who got his start in 1970 serving as the drummer and lead singer of the American R&B/soul group L.T.D. He is best known for hits throughout the 70s and 80s including “Love Ballad,” “Back In Love Again,” “You Should Be Mine,” “On The Wings of Love,” and many more.

How To Plan A Wedding On A Budget

You can have a memorable wedding on a budget. Here's how.

Originally Published Nov. 18, 2014

As my fiancee and I were planning our wedding, one recurring idea continued to undergird our wedding decision: “‘I do’ doesn’t have to mean ‘Go broke.'”

I know you may think the aforementioned is commonsense, but let me remind you that emotions tend to take over when it comes to matters of the heart.

Where is the money coming from to pay for modern-day weddings?Unlike what was experienced historically, where parents absorbed a large amount of the wedding expenses, today’s couples are having to bear responsibility for the entire cost of the wedding, reception and the honeymoon.

Do you have thousands set aside and allotted for your wedding? If not, all is not lost with being able to plan a classy, fun, and enjoyable wedding.

You just have to think creatively and be willing to develop a simple but comprehensive wedding budget. People tend to hate the “B” word, but it’s an absolute necessity to keep from going broke for your one-day celebration. As with most matters of the heart, you have to be willing to communicate and make decisions to help keep in alignment with your long-term goals. Don’t let “I do” cause you to “Go broke.”

Consider the following to manage the total expense of your wedding:

1. Wedding Venue

As you plan your wedding, you will learn very quickly that the word “wedding” automatically adds a premium to the normal cost of goods and services. There are non-traditional options that offer a nice ambiance for you and your guests. Consider outdoor locations like a park or other public location. Also, destination weddings are becoming more popular because they allow you to manage overall cost, while providing you and your guests with beautiful scenery.

2. Manage Your Guest List

As a general rule of thumb, people enjoy sharing in the marital celebration of a new couple. The question you need to ask yourself is, “Are we in a position to accommodate the expense of having business associates, old elementary school teachers and family we may not regularly interact with, etc.?” Don’t be afraid to reduce your guest list, because $30-$125 per plate can become costly.

3. Food

As mentioned above, the reception celebration has the ability to turn your budget upside down. A $20-$30 reception dinner becomes $30-$125 just because it’s associated with a “wedding.” As you plan your reception, consider options that allow you to select your own caterer instead of having to use the in-house provider. You can save hundreds or thousands of dollars by using an outside caterer.

4. Dress

Generally one of the most expensive line items on a wedding budget, the wedding dress focus can take you out of budget if you get caught-up on name brands and celebrity associations. Don’t be intimidated by boutiques, discount providers, and secondhand stores.

5. Photography/Videography/Music

You cannot afford to skimp on the photography investment. Pictures are the keepsake you retain for a lifetime. Photos allow you to remain connected to the special moments before, during and just after saying “I do!” Videography is an area that you may be able to live without if you are on a tight budget. Chances are you will only watch the wedding video a handful of times before it takes residence in your attic. Music is an area you can get creative with. You may be able to create the fun atmosphere you desire by using a playlist instead of hiring a DJ or live band. Choosing the playlist option may save you $500-$1,500 depending on the DJ or band selection.

6. Miscellaneous

There are a number of miscellaneous services and products you can become enamored with and overwhelmed by while planning your wedding. However, if it doesn’t fit within the budget, leave it out. Save the Date cards can be replaced by e-mail or website notifications. Wedding favors typically get tossed out by guests after the event, so don’t get too focused on having them as part of the celebration. The list goes on and on.

The above only represents a handful of the various components of wedding celebration. As you can see the costs add-up and can become overwhelming. Remember, there are couples who have opted for a courthouse ceremony and are still married today. Don’t allow the infatuation of “I do” cause you to “go broke” in the process. Make smart money decisions that will allow you to save for your long-term future instead of a 4-10-hour event.
