‘So Long, Fort Bragg, Hello, Fort Liberty:’ North Carolina Military Base Renamed

‘So Long, Fort Bragg, Hello, Fort Liberty:’ North Carolina Military Base Renamed

A North Carolina military base is one of the latest to rename military posts, ships, streets, and other things that initially honored Confederate leaders.

A ceremony was recently held renaming Fort Bragg, one of the most prominent military installations in the U.S. According to The Washington Post, the military base was officially renamed Fort Liberty.

“Welcome to Fort Liberty, the center of the universe,” Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue, the commanding general of Fort Liberty, said during the ceremony. “We were given a mission to re-designate our installation, no small task with its history. We seized this opportunity to make ourselves better and to seek excellence. That is what we always have done and always will do.”

Fort Bragg, the United States Army’s Special Operations Command headquarters and home to the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, was originally named after Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg in 1918. With its new name, the base became the only one named after a value instead of a person.

“Every name was considered [and] debated,” Donahue said, noting that selecting a name for Fort Bragg was tough for the committee. “Ultimately, any of them could have been chosen. A consensus could not be reached on just one.”

The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) reported that the congressionally mandated plan was picked up in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd. A panel established by Congress recommended nine Army bases that honored Confederate military officers to be renamed, with the new titles being confirmed in September and accepted by the Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Although the initiative has run into opposing views, including from Donald Trump, William A. LaPlante, the undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment ordered the DOD to begin installing the new names in January.

Along with Fort Bragg, the other eight Army bases to be renamed are Fort Benning and Fort Gordon in Georgia; Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Lee, and Fort Pickett in Virginia; Fort Polk in Louisiana; Fort Rucker in Alabama; and Fort Hood in Texas.

NBA Legend Kevin Johnson To Open Tulsa Soul Food Restaurant On Race Massacre Anniversary

NBA Legend Kevin Johnson To Open Tulsa Soul Food Restaurant On Race Massacre Anniversary

Former NBA player Kevin Johnson is adding “restaurant owner” to his already impressive resume while doing something special for Tulsa, OK.

Johnson is opening Fixins Soul Kitchen in Tulsa on June 13, KTUL reports.

Located in the Greenwood District, Fixins will serve traditional food mixed with a modern vibe. The menu is fully inspired by soul food spots Johnson traveled to while playing in the NBA and from his grandmother’s recipes. Originally slated to open in Sacramento, where Johnson served as mayor, he decided to move the restaurant to Tulsa, his grandfather and grandmother’s hometown.

With so much Black history in the city, the restaurant is located in the former Black Wall Street community, a community that was once thriving in Black excellence until the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

Survivors of the massacre, Hughes Van Ellis, Viola Fletcher, and Lessie Randle, joined Johnson at the private ribbon cutting on May 31—the anniversary of the historic event —and were the first to eat at the restaurant.

“Fixins has become an extension of my family’s legacy, and I’m so excited to bring our new location to Tulsa, my grandparents’ hometown,” Johnson said, according to AfroTech. “I’m so honored to be joined by the remaining Tulsa Massacre survivors, descendants, and community leaders on this important day as we give back to the Tulsa community.”

Other celebrities and elite in attendance included Tulsa Mayor GT Bynum and former MTV personality and talk show host Ananda Lewis.

The restaurant will open for a short time June 6 before its full opening with proceeds going toward the Greenwood Rising and the Thunder Fellows Program. Fixins General Manager Derek Allen told News on 6 looks at the partnership as a way to uplift the youth.

“One way we do it is we keep them out of the streets, keep them working, give them a job, skillset,” Allen said.

The restaurant will provide 85 new jobs for the community and will host a Juneteenth celebration on June 16.

The People’s Party! Dr. Cornel West Announces His Bid For President of the US

The People’s Party! Dr. Cornel West Announces His Bid For President of the US

Cornel West, MA, Ph.D. is throwing in his bid for the Oval Office.

The political activist and philosopher posted a candid video on Twitter announcing his candidacy for president of the United States under a third party—the People’s Party. “Running for truth and justice,” the tweet said. “Fighting to end poverty, mass incarceration, ending wars and ecological collapse, guaranteeing housing, health care, education and living wages for all!”

The People’s Party was founded by a former campaign staff member for Sen. Bernie Sanders and has had active ballots in Florida, Missouri, and Virginia, CBS News reports. The highly educated activist is known for his left-winged approach to politics, supporting Sanders’ last two presidential campaigns and being openly critical of former President Barack Obama.

In the video, West, 70, speaks about caring more about the people than the votes. With clips of him as a guest on Real Time With Bill Maher and The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he breaks down why voters need to be involved. “I come from a tradition where I care about you,” West said. “I care about whether you have access to a job with a living wage, decent housing, women having control over their bodies, healthcare for all, de-escalating the destruction of the planet, the destruction of American democracy.”

The progressive politician is the third non-Republican candidate to make a presidential announcement. In addition to President Biden eyeing to remain in office, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has put in a Democratic Party bid for president in 2024. Former Ohio state Sen. Nina Turner responded to the video via Twitter, expressing her support. “Elevate this thing Dr. West,” she tweeted.

Revealing Disparities: Black Americans Overlooked in National Financial Recovery, Report Finds

Revealing Disparities: Black Americans Overlooked in National Financial Recovery, Report Finds

The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies has released a report detailing the current state of the financial lives of Black Americans, concluding that there have been too few improvements even as the country’s economy has begun to recover.

In “Pessimism and Hope: A Survey of the Financial Status and Aspirations of Black Americans,” The Joint Center found that more than 57 percent of Black Americans have credit card debt, about 32 percent have student loan debt, and over 28 percent have mortgage debt, according to the NNPA/Black Press of America.

The Joint Center, founded in 1970 to “lend a hand to Black leaders as they traveled the uncharted road from civil rights activism to the political establishment,” also found that about one-third of Black Americans report having more debt than they feel is manageable, leading to increased stress and financial concerns.

“By collecting and analyzing new data on Black Americans specifically, we gain insights into the economic well-being of Black communities — and, therefore, the combined national economy — in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Jessica Fulton, vice president of policy for the Joint Center, said in a news release. “Our findings will serve public and private sector decision-makers committed to connecting more Americans to economic opportunities, especially those focused on financial well-being and wealth building.”

The research also suggests that most Black Americans’ financial goals revolve around meeting their most basic needs as well as more immediate goals, according to NNPA/Black Press of America. Eighty percent of Black adults name not living paycheck to paycheck, not worrying about monthly bills, and being able to maintain an emergency fund as part of their chief financial desires.

Also, the outlet reported, nearly half of Black Americans earning $60,000 or more annually reported having a good or very good credit score; only 16 percent of Black Americans who make $30,000 or less per year, reported having good or very good credit scores.

Virginia Military Institute’s Chief Diversity Officer Resigns Amidst Calls To End DEI Initiatives

Virginia Military Institute’s Chief Diversity Officer Resigns Amidst Calls To End DEI Initiatives

Virginia Military Institute’s first chief diversity officer Jamica Love has resigned after alumni of the college pushed back against DEI initiatives.

Love, who served as the highest-ranking Black woman across military colleges, took over the position in 2021 when VMI faced DEI allegations of structural racism by Black students and alumni, leading to an extensive investigation. Upon her hiring, Love faced criticism from cadets as well as alumni, according to CNN.

Retired Army Maj. General Cedric T. Wins, who is VMI’s first Black superintendent in its 183-year history, announced Love’s resignation in a letter sent to the school’s community.

“She has been singularly focused on preparing our cadets for the world which they will enter after graduation and making VMI an inclusive institution for any interested and qualified prospective cadet, faculty, or staff member,” he wrote. He added that Love had “served with distinction” and “has been an exemplar of professionalism and her expertise and positive attitude will be greatly missed.”

Love was brought in to help rectify DEI findings from an independent investigation into the college’s culture and racial climate which found that “institutional racism and sexism are present, tolerated, and left unaddressed at VMI”, according to The Washington Post.

The college did not admit Black male students until 1968 and failed to allow women in until 1997. The 1,500 cadets currently enrolled at the institution remain overwhelmingly white and male. Efforts to diversify the student body have been met with heavy resistance over the years.

The organization giving voice to these concerns is Spirit of VMI, which has argued that DEI is “unnecessary,” promotes racial division, and urge others to “reject the woke assault on VMI,” according to CNN.

Love’s deputy, Briana Williams, will serve as interim chief diversity officer until the position can be filled on a permanent basis, VMI spokesman Col. Bill Wyatt told CNN.

Saks Fifth Avenue Pays $9.3M To Ex-Worker For Racial Discrimination

Saks Fifth Avenue Pays $9.3M To Ex-Worker For Racial Discrimination

An Ohio jury awarded $9.3 million in damages to a Black former Saks Fifth Avenue worker who claimed that racial discrimination led to her termination in 2019.

Elizabeth Cook argued that her managers at the store, located at Columbus, Ohio’s Polaris Fashion Place, treated her unjustly and unfairly compared with her non-Black coworkers, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Cook’s lawsuit alleged that she was eventually terminated for violating a policy that had not been put into effect at the time of her firing. An eight-member jury agreed with her claims and awarded Cook $2.3 million for past and future lost wages as well as an additional $7 million in punitive damages.

Though Saks Fifth Avenue has denied any wrongdoing, the magistrate judge Elizabeta Saken felt the company’s crimes fit Cook’s asking amount.

“We do not tolerate employees violating our policies, and reserve the right to hold them accountable in all instances, including through termination,” the retailer said via a statement. “Our position remains that there was no discrimination or retaliation involved in this situation. We are disappointed in the jury’s decision and plan to appeal the outcome.”

Still, Cook’s documented instances of discriminatory punishment handed down by her superiors seemed to paint a completely different tale, one that has haunted her.

“This process helped restore the dignity I lost five years ago when I was unlawfully terminated by Saks Fifth Avenue,” she said in a statement through her lawyer. “While I can understand that rogue managers and bad employees can lead to bad outcomes like mine, I still cannot fathom how Saks’s internal racial discrimination complaint process completely failed.”

According to her lawsuit, during her time at the retail store, Cooks was one of the top sales associates; therefore, her unjust treatment was not related to her ability to perform her duties.

“During Plaintiff’s tenure at Saks, she was forced to endure a pervasive pattern of discrimination and retaliation by defendants,” the lawsuit said. “Although they were each committed to maintaining Saks’ reputation as a luxury retailer by providing stellar customer service, her managers deliberately targeted her because of her race.”

The lawsuit also alleged regular racial profiling of Black shoppers.

Black Mom and Former Golden Corral Franchise Owner, Pursues Racial Discrimination Lawsuit Against the Company

Sherrance Henderson, a single African American mom of two autistic children, has filed a lawsuit for racial discrimination against Golden Corral, one of the largest buffet restaurant chains in the country. In 2017, her company, Cornucopia Queen, Inc., bought, built and opened a Golden Corral franchise in Poughkeepsie, New York, but she says that her license was unlawfully terminated after just 52 days in business.

Just recently, in March 2023, Judge Nelson Ramon of the White Plains Southern District Federal Court granted her company an order to proceed against the franchisor for discrimination and punitive damages. Ms. Henderson first brought her case before the Southern District White Plains Federal Court House in 2018, claiming her business was discriminated against by Golden Corral Franchise Systems. The original filing of her complaint was for more than $265 million.

Ms. Henderson says that she invested her life savings of more than $3 million dollars and four years of her life to open a Golden Corral franchise in Poughkeepsie, New York. The franchisor, Golden Corral Franchise Systems of Raleigh Durham, North Carolina, terminated her license after just 52 days in business with no opportunity to cure her defaults. The inspector and regional manager of Golden Corral Franchise Systems noted in his report that he found three cigarette butts in an ashtray outside the business, a few pieces of debris in the parking lot, workers without sanitary hats and temperatures a few degrees lower or higher than standard in the buffet trays.

In an article published by the Poughkeepsie Journal, Golden Corral stated that Ms. Henderson’s location store was devaluing their brand, hence the termination of her license. However, Cornucopia Queen, Inc. had no Department of Health violations or fines from the City of Poughkeepsie.

From the onset of her relationship with Golden Corral Franchise Systems, Ms. Henderson says she received contentious treatment. She was the only Black American female franchisee at the time out of more than 350 Golden Corral franchise buffet locations, which her team alleges played a significant role in the sudden closure of her business. Cornucopia Queen, Inc. experienced growing pains similar to other new Golden Corral restaurants, yet her corporation was not given the same consideration as male and non-black female franchise owners. For example, a different Golden Corral franchise owner, notably a white male, was given ample opportunities to make corrections to reopen his restaurant after the Department of Health closed the store down. Similarly, a non-Black female owner with similar growing was given over 200 days to make corrections, while Cornucopia Queen, Inc., was given zero days. Cornucopia Queen, Inc. and her legal team allege that race, gender, and disability all played a factor.

With Ms. Henderson’s life savings tied up in the franchise and no ability to earn revenue from the investment, the SBA-approved lender foreclosed on her home and the brick-and-mortar of her Golden Corral franchise in Poughkeepsie, New York. Ms. Henderson, once a multi-millionaire, was forced to resort to food stamps and other state and federal resources to survive. Ms. Henderson is also disabled and a single parent with no support from the fathers of her children.

She says that these discriminatory practices first began in 2013 when she first signed a 15-year franchise contract with Golden Corral. The franchisor allegedly would not allow her to move forward with a territory unless she brought in partners, ideally men. After complying with the demand, she worked with the City of Newark, New Jersey to purchase a license for her franchisee, where her business would benefit from considerable tax revenue breaks. However, she says that Golden Corral Franchise Systems “red-lined” the whole city and refused to honor the license agreement of her ownership. As a result, Cornucopia Queen, Inc. was strong-armed into accepting the Poughkeepsie location – one she did not purchase — and do business in a community where she had no relationships, no financial network, and no family ties.

Ms. Henderson reluctantly built the undesirable location from raw land to avoid losing her initial investment, and in January 2017, the franchise was opened for business. In March 2017, Golden Corral terminated the franchise license of Cornucopia Queen, Inc.

With approval from Judge Nelson Ramon to pursue punitive damage opportunities, Ms. Henderson will be able to bring her case before a jury to finally receive financial justice. Her company, Cornucopia Queen Inc., is being represented by Attorney Angel A. Bermudez of Bermudez Law Firm based in Miami, Florida.

Florida Pastor Charged After Leaving Infant In Hot Car For 3 Hours To Attend Church Services

Florida Pastor Charged After Leaving Infant In Hot Car For 3 Hours To Attend Church Services

Within one week, another Black mother is charged with endangering her child by leaving them in the car.

This time, the New York Post reports Bulaine Molme of Florida left her 11-month-old baby in a hot car for three hours while she officiated a church service. She was booked last week on a felony count of manslaughter of a child at the Brevard County jail. Officials were called to Mount of Olives Evangelical Church, with a predominately Haitian congregation, in Palm Bay after reports of an unresponsive infant. Molme, 37, told detectives she was late for the church service and thought a congregation member had brought her infant daughter inside.

Service was over by the time she realized the baby was never inside. The high temperature that day was 81, and according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, temperatures inside a car can reach up to 105 degrees for a 75-degree day. Children’s body temperature goes up almost five times faster than adults. Heatstroke sets in once the body temperature rises to 104 degrees.

She rushed to the vehicle to find the baby strapped in the car seat, unresponsive. The baby was pronounced dead at Palm Bay Community Hospital after several attempts of CPR were performed on her.

Molme and her husband, Jnmarc, have three other children. The couple started the church in 2019, with only nine people at a nearby park, before moving to a storefront property. Her bond was set at $15,000; if convicted, the pastor could face up to 30 years in state prison. However, criminal trial expert, Geoff Golub, feels this case may be hard to prove in a court of law. “If you really assume someone is taking the baby, then I think you have a good defense,” Golub told Fox 35 Orlando.

“I think sometimes you just have tragic things that happen. Obviously, she is going to be scarred for the rest of her life.” He thinks the manslaughter charge may not stick with Florida is second in the nation for hot car deaths.

Angel Reese Gets Schooled On The Court In PepsiCo’s New Campaign For The NBA Finals

Introducing “the duo that put the 3-pointer on the map,” Lem and Lime.

Louisiana State University Tiger’s basketball star Angel Reese helped better explain that through her recent NIL deal. The NCAA superstar appeared in the latest campaign for STARRY, PepsiCo’s new lemon-lime flavored soda and the official soft drink of the NBA.

The full-length advertisement for the “3>2” campaign features Zion Williamson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Matt Barnes, and of course, the animated Lem and Lime, who take the athletes through the history of the 3-pointer. The athletes gathered in a basketball gym on the bleachers, where they learned that Chris Ford made the first official swish from the 3-point line.

Reese stood to give Lem and Lime their flowers for using basic math skills to “revolutionize” the sport. “The reason you guys have any shooting range is because of these two. Give them their flowers,” she stated before one of the athletes turns and challenges her to a 3-point shootout. The LSU forward agreed to bet on one of the brand’s lemon-lime sodas and then “game on.” Reese banks a shot from half court before joining Lem and Lime to sip on the STARRY drink she won fair and square.

“STARRY is really bringing the fun to the game and we all had a great time on set shooting it together,” Reese said in a statement. “The attitude and personality of the brand shines bright, and I know fans are going to love the unique and creative STARRY take on how the 3-pointer came to be thanks to my new friends, Lem and Lime.”

“The conversations around the 3-pointer and its impact on the NBA have been debated far and wide, and we’re excited to tell the STARRY version of the history behind the shot that changed the game forever,” Michael Smith, senior director of STARRY brand marketing, said. “As a fresh new brand and the official soft drink of the NBA, we wanted to embrace hoops culture during a pivotal moment in the NBA season and give fans something fun to talk about in a way that only STARRY could.”

The “3>2: A STARRY® Story” launched during Game One of the NBA Finals.

Gov. Gavin Newsom Is Slacking On His Promise To Appoint A Black Woman To Senate

The race for a pending Senate seat is already hot, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom has a promise to keep.

Newsom recently took the stand during the state Democratic Party Convention where Vilma Dawson was present and stood in support. According to CNN, Democrats expect Newsom to keep a promise regarding selecting a successor to fill 86-year-old Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s seat in the Senate should she confirm retirement.

“I’m sure Governor Newsom has a plan to appoint an African American female,” Dawson said. “I don’t think the governorship is where he’s going to stop his political career. People have long memories as to whether they can trust someone to support, shall we say, promises that they made.”

Newsom committed to nominating an African American woman to the Senate in 2021, per an interview with MSNBC. The possibility for a new appointment comes amid Feinstein’s months-long absence due to a shingles diagnosis.

Kimberly Ellis, a Democratic strategist and activist in California, has worked with other Democratic women to ensure a qualified person is chosen to fill Feinstein’s seat if she retires. “We do believe that Governor Newsom will keep his promise. We have known him to be a man of his word.”

Black women are the margin of victory. We get it done. [Newsom] knows that just like many in the country know that. And so, we have no doubt that he will indeed appoint a Black woman. The only question that’s on the table is which Black woman.”

According to Pew Research Center, there have been two Black women to serve in the Senate: Democrat Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois, who was elected in 1992, and Vice President Kamala Harris, who was elected in 2017 as a California senator.

State Rep. Barbara Lee launched her bid during Black History Month to become the second Black woman senator from California. Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware are also prospects for U.S. Senate bids in 2024. Alsobrooks bid is to become the first Black woman elected statewide in Maryland.
