How Cambridge University’s Youngest Black Professor Didn’t Learn To Read Until Age 18

Don’t ever count Black people out.

Just ask professor Jason Arday, the youngest Black professor at the prestigious Cambridge University in England, who couldn’t read until he was an adult.

The 37-year-old told BBC that he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and global development delay when he was a child. He ws unable to speak until he was 11 and couldn’t read or write until he was 18. However, his situation never stopped him from wanting to learn or to be curious about the world around him.

“Why are some people homeless?” Arday remembers wondering. “Why is there war?”

Nearly 10 years ago, he had to almost stay in an assisted living facility. Now he is a professor of sociology of education, one of five Black professors at the institution. “As optimistic as I am, there’s just no way I could have thought that would have happened,” Arday told The Times (UK). “If I was a betting person, the odds on it were so long. It’s just mad.”

The southwest London native admitted that he had no clue what he was doing when he was first started writing academic papers. He persevered thanks to one of his idols, Nelson Mandela, and watching rugby. He says his mother played a role in him getting to where he is now.

Arday received his degree in physical education and education studies from the University of Surrey; his mentor and tutor, Sandro Sandri, encouraged him to pursue academia. He will finally start at Cambridge March 6.

“Everything I submitted got violently rejected. The peer review process was so cruel, it was almost funny,” Arday said of his advanced studies. “But I treated it as a learning experience and, perversely, began to enjoy it.” While at Cambridge, Arday hopes the school can leverage his ideas “to lead that agenda nationally and globally.”

Meet the Atlanta Woman Who Built a Luxury Tiny House in Her Backyard for $35K While Renting Out Her $196K Home

The Price is right for this homeowner.

Atlanta resident Precious Price, 26, built a tiny house in the backyard of her three-bedroom, 1,400-square-foot home for Airbnb renters.

According to her Instagram, Price’s original property that she purchased in 2019 had too much space, so she built the tiny house and set up the larger home for renters to have the complete three-bedroom house.

Price built the tiny home and added $35,000 worth of luxurious renovations. The process of building her tiny house included obtaining building, plumbing, and electrical permits, purchasing a shed, and recruiting a local contracting team to do her concrete slab foundation, which was completed in October 2020.

“Instead of taking out a bank loan, I cashed out $8,500 in stocks and put about $20,000 on my credit cards to pay for everything,” Price said, according to CNBC. “I was able to pay off this debt last year.”

Price completed her 296-square-foot home in March 2021, recovering the costs by renting in out on Airbnb.

“By charging between $89 and $129 per night and $1,300 for monthly leases, I was able to bring in almost $32,000 in gross rental income,” Price said. “And this January, I moved into the tiny home to save on living expenses.”

Price’s modern and rustic tiny house includes a queen-sized bed, located above the front door, a small desk, daybed as her a couch, and a spacious kitchen with a wooden sliding door dividing it from the bathroom which features glass shower doors.

“Having this home has given me a ton of real estate options, including rental income and backup housing for myself or aging family members,” she added.

“This year, I’m excited to fully experience the tiny home lifestyle for myself. It’s amazing what you can do with a bit of backyard space,” she said.

For both houses, Price pays $1,580 a month. That includes electricity, water, internet, and mortgage and property taxes.

George Clinton, Wiz Khalifa

George Clinton Loves Wiz Khalifa’s Portrayal Of Him In ‘Spinning Gold’: ‘It Makes Me Cool’

George Clinton had no say in the Wiz Khalifa’s casting of him in the upcoming film Spinning Gold, but the Parliament-Funkadelic frontman loves the rapper’s performance.

The famed musician was recently stopped by TMZ at Los Angeles International Airport while en route to meet with Wiz personally. He was asked his thoughts on the film, which will be released April 5.

“It’s cool. It makes me cool,” he said. “Made me look like Bootsy [Collins].”

When preparing for the role, Clinton said Wiz reached out to him. The pair exchanged ideas and life wisdom.

“He got that new wisdom. I got that old wisdom,” he explained.

Despite not taking part in the casting, Clinton got his grandchildren to appear in the film as his bandmates.

Spinning Gold tells the story of Casablanca records, a record label that broke ground in the 1970s with a diverse mix of eccentric acts, including Parliament, Donna Summer, Bill Withers, Village People, and KISS.

Along with Wiz, the star-studded cast includes Jason Derulo as Ronald Isley of The Isley Brothers, Pink Sweat$ as Bill Withers, Tayla Parx as Donna Summer, Ledisi as Gladys Knight, Chris Redd as Frankie Crocker, Jay Pharoah as Cecil Holmes, and Jeremy Jordan as Neil Bogart.

Samuel L. Jackson and Justin Timberlake also appear in the film.

Meanwhile, Clinton has teamed up with award-winning civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump to get assistance with obtaining royalties for his 1982 hit, “Atomic Dog.” Talks about the legal case are still under wraps, so Clinton couldn’t say too much.

But Clinton recently partnered with Will Smith and T.D. Jakes to help raise $10 million for Ben Crump’s Law School. Clinton and Crump are also Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers who hail from North Carolina but reside in Tallahassee, Florida.

Michael B. Jordan Apologizes to Mom For Steamy Calvin Klein Campaign: ‘It’s Out There’

Michael B. Jordan almost broke the internet yesterday after Calvin Klein released photos from his first official campaign with the iconic fashion brand.

“The debut. @michaelbjordan Calvins or nothing,” the brand captioned the first pair of Jordan’s modeling pics.

The first photo release produced a number of strong responses from fans of the Creed actor.

“Babe, I’m a little bit jealous, please delete,” one fan wrote.

“Mother of God,” added another.

“Can you tone it down a tad?? My girlfriend is a step closer to leaving me every time she see’s this 😂😂😂,” another fan jokingly wrote.

Calvin Klein followed up with a tease of Jordan’s underwear-focused modeling pics.

“Should we drop more?” they captioned the post.

“yes please more hot tank tops,” added another.

“No. Just send em to me,” one fan wrote.

Jordan was well aware of the response the sultry campaign would receive. So, he made sure to call his mother to apologize in advance.

“I was like, ‘My mama gonna have to see this. Let me call her and be like, I’m sorry. It’s out there,’” Jordan told ET Canada at the Creed III premiere Monday. “My business all out in the streets—literally.”

The Calvin Klein campaign comes just ahead of Jordan making his directorial debut in the third installment of the Creed franchise, Us Weekly reported.

The new film follows Adonis Creed as he continues his boxing career while maintaining his family life. This time around, Creed’s childhood friend (played by Jonathan Majors) is seeking the fame and popularity the boxing champion has obtained.

1501 Certified Entertainment CEO Apologizes To Megan Thee Stallion For ‘Unfortunate’ Fallout

Megan Thee Stallion continues to be vindicated while remaining in seclusion following Tory Lanez’s guilty verdict for shooting her.

The latest foe who appears to be singing a new tune is 1501 Certified Entertainment CEO Carl Crawford. The former major league baseball player brought on Kai “Verse” Tyler to serve as the new president at 1501 while working to revamp his record label’s image.

Part of the rebrand seemingly includes calling a truce with Megan Thee Stallion after a years-long feud with the Grammy-winning rapper.

“Me and Megan, we haven’t talked since 2019,” Crawford told TMZ.

“We’ve been going through, I guess, what you guys see online, and it’s unfortunate because I never wanted to have a situation where I was, you know, going back and forth with her on the internet.”

Crawford blamed social media for instigating his drama with the superstar entertainer.

“I never had any problems with Megan Thee Stallion. It’s just the social media stuff, it turned really, really sour,” he said. “You take this social media part out of it, we don’t have a problem … I’m done with that.”

Megan Thee Stallion signed with 1501 at the start of her rap career. However, things went sour as she accused the label of keeping her bound by a shady contract.

Last August, Megan Thee Stallion filed to have Crawford and J. Prince deposed as part of the lawsuit. She sounded off against the duo on Twitter last year after they accused her of not being from Houston and took credit for launching her career.

“I’m so over these grown ass men trying to take credit away from the work me and my mama put into the beginning of my career,” she tweeted at the time.

“Me and my mom ‘developed’ my career I was already known for freestyling and I was already working on Tina Snow before I got to 1501.”

Deion Sanders

Deion Sanders Ripped For Controversial Comments On Recruiting Defensive Linemen on ‘Free Lunch’

Deion Sanders is still being ripped for comments he made nearly two weeks ago on The Rich Eisen Show for explaining what he looks for when recruiting players at certain positions.

Here’s what he said:

“We want smart, tough, fast, disciplined with character,” Sanders told Eisen, his former colleague at NFL Network. “Quarterbacks are different. We want mother and father, dual parents. We want that kid to be a 3.5+ GPA; he’s got to be smart. He can’t make bad decisions off the field. He has to be a leader of men. There are so many different attributes of what we look for. We would love a coach’s son. That’s what we look for in quarterbacks.”

Sanders also explained what he looks for on the defensive and offensive lines. Many took issue with his comments about the defensive linemen.

“For offensive linemen, we look for dual-parent homes with a strong father that they adhered to. They also need to be smart, have a 3.3+ GPA, and be tough and physical. Defensive line is totally the opposite. Single mother, on free lunch, and he’s just trying to make it. He’s trying to rescue momma. I want him to just go get it. We know what, and we go get it.”

The defensive line description is seemingly based on the stereotypical thought process that tends to generalize Black families who may be below the poverty level.

It’s safe to say that a couple of people weren’t too keen on what he stated.

We’ll see if this blows over anytime soon for Coach Prime, who is coming off two super-successful seasons at Jackson State.

Sotheby’s reported that Nike produced the first Air Jordan model in late 1984, naming it the Air Jordan I. The sneaker was constructed specifically for Jordan to use during his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls. The shoe was later released to the general public in 1985.

Brahm Wachter, head of streetwear and modern collectables, described the Jordan collection as the “Mona Lisa of the sneaker collecting and sports memorabilia communities,” in a statement.

“While they are two distinct communities, they converge here with the Dynasty Collection. They also represent the intersection of Jordan’s championship legacy and his style legacy, both of which have combined to make him a global icon,” Wachter said. “Because of the historical and cultural impact that they represent, as a group, they are among the most important basketball shoes a collector could own.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that the shoes were collected directly from Jordan following the championship games.

The Dynasty Collection will be on display in the Sotheby’s Dubai location from February 27 to March 3.

Cardi B Shares ‘Spiritual Journey’ of Court-Mandated Community Service on Twitter

Cardi B has embarked on a “spiritual journey” thanks to the court-mandated community service she’s been performing.

The “I Like It” rapper was ordered to community service in September 2022 as part of a plea deal she took in her 2018 strip club brawl case, ET reports. Cardi has been using social media to share updates about her community service with fans, including over the weekend on Twitter.

“Community service has been the best thing that has happened to me,” she wrote. “Almost like a spiritual journey because sometimes I leave these centers in tears.”

“Those people that we leave behind they just need somebody to talk and a lil push and YOU might be able to change their life forever,” she added.

Cardi pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment last year, which resulted in 15 days of court-mandated community service. She was initially indicted on 12 charges that included two felonies.

She’s also ordered to stay away from the two victims she assaulted during the strip club brawl as part of a three-year protection order. Since beginning her community service last month, Cardi has been posting photos of her fashionable looks while also taking accountability for her actions.

“Second day of community service,” she captioned a January post. “Obey the law.”

““On my way to serve some community service time,” another post read. “DONT COMMIT CRIMES!”

“Community service ….I have to do a lot of hours today and I’m very sleepy ……..YOU DO THE CRIME YOU DO THE TIME!!!!!” Cardi tweeted.

“My brains are burning from waking up early ,community service then studio….but I did the crime “I only have myself to blame,” she wrote.

“Community service today till 4pm …..Just cause you famous it don’t mean your special …OBEY THE LAW!,” she tweeted on Tuesday.

One video clip shows the rapper dancing with fans during one of her community service stints.

Keisha Lance Bottoms

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Departs from White House Role

She had a direct line to the president, and now she’s exiting the White House.

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is reportedly handing over her role as a senior official with the Biden administration to return to Georgia.

According to an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Lance Bottoms shared that she is ready to get back to her family and focus on her future.

After serving as mayor from 2018–2021, Lance Bottoms replaced former Louisiana congressman and Biden’s first Office of Public Engagement director, Cedric Richmond, in 2022. In her role, she focused on maintaining equity as part of Biden’s political agenda and served as a public face of the administration.

“I was proud to bring a different voice and a different face to the White House: A voice from the South, an African-American woman in this White House. It was extraordinary,” Bottoms said. “Sitting across from the president in the Oval Office, he knew that whatever my response was, I was speaking for so many people.”

“I have leaned on Keisha as a close advisor with exceptional instincts, and I am grateful to her for serving our nation with honor and integrity,” Biden said. “I wish her the best as she returns home to Atlanta to be with her family.”

In 2021, Biden held a fundraiser for Lance Bottoms before her announcement to decline to run for a second term.

“We have opened up the doors to thousands of people to engage with the White House in a meaningful way,” she said. “That’s what I’m really proud of. We have been able to hear from voices of a cross-section of people.”

Lance Bottoms shared that she will continue her work with public policy and is keeping her options open regarding a return to public office.

“Never say never. I said that when I left the mayor’s office. Stay tuned,” Lance Bottoms said.

President Joe Biden announced Monday that Steven Benjamin, the former mayor of Columbia, S.C., will start in Lance Bottoms’ position as a senior adviser and Director of the Office of Public Engagement in April.

‘Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s’ Tim Norman Insists He Didn’t Order His Nephew’s Killing

Last year, a jury found that Tim Norman ordered his nephew Andre Montgomery’s 2016 death in a murder-for-hire plan, KSDK reported.

Last week, the shamed former reality TV personality took to Instagram to proclaim his innocence. Norman, who was convicted in September 2022, is scheduled to be sentenced March 2.

“Thank you for all the prayers. I’m still in disbelief. The feds know 100% I did not do those insurance policies. But the jury didn’t get to hear that. And not one person got on the stand and said that I told them to hurt my nephew. They destroyed my name and image so you guys wouldn’t search for the truth.”

A post shared by Tim Norman (@the_timnorman)

It was the first post on Norman’s Instagram since July 2020. His comments were also turned off on the recent post, which is probably for the best.

Norman is the son of Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s matriarch Robbie Montgomery, and he starred in the popular OWN network show, which ran for several years. Norman was charged with conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and was accused of orchestrating the murder to get $450,000 in insurance money.

U.S. Attorney Sayler Fleming said, “Within days of his nephew’s murder, Mr. Norman started the process of getting the insurance company to pay the claim.”

Michael Leonard, who represented Norman, claimed that he was a “concerned uncle and successful celebrity who hoped to confront, but not hurt, his nephew.”

Norman’s accused co-conspirators, Terica Ellis and Travell Hill (who shot Montgomery), pleaded guilty. They said Norman paid them thousands of dollars in the days after Montgomery’s death. Prosecutors used the plea arrangements and their testimony as evidence against Norman.

Waiel Rebhi Yaghnam, the insurance agent accuse of assisting Norman with the policies before the 21-year-old Montgomery was executed, also pleaded guilty.
