The National Museum of African American History and Culture Our American Story Honors General Colin Powell

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is proud to present the next page from Our American Story, an online series for museum supporters. We offer these stories to honor and celebrate the African American experience, share an immensely rich history and culture, and inspire and sustain our community as we move toward the future together, according to a press release.

General Colin Luther Powell, our nation’s first African American Secretary of State, was a revered military hero, four-star general, decorated veteran and statesman. His accomplishments during his decades of military and civil service—including being a recipient of the Soldier’s Medal, the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, the Congressional Gold Medal and two Presidential Medals of Freedom, among others—serve as a powerful testament and symbol of the fulfillment of the American promise.

His is the quintessential American story—one characterized by resilience, determination and a deep love of country. In forging his own journey to success, Powell also shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for others in public service.

The son of Jamaican immigrants, Powell was born in Harlem, N.Y., in 1937 and raised to value hard work and determination above all else. He grew up in New York City’s public school system and attended the City College of New York, where he majored in geology and explored the possibilities of a military career by joining the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).

“…I saw these cadets in uniform, and I wasn’t doing well in civil engineering…I was attracted to it. I liked the structure, I liked the discipline, I liked being with a group of youngsters that were just like me with that same inclination toward military activity. And frankly, in City College and ROTC, I found another family. I was leaving family in the Bronx now back with a different kind of family, and I just fell in love with it. I was a straight A student in ROTC.”

— Gen. Colin Powell

After graduating in 1958, Powell was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Over the next decade Powell completed Infantry Officer Basic, Ranger and Airborne schools. He served as a platoon leader and commanded a company of the fifth Infantry Division before being promoted to captain in 1962. In December 1962, Powell was assigned to Vietnam as an advisor to a South Vietnamese Infantry battalion. There he was wounded and received a Purple Heart.

Returning home in November 1963, Powell completed the Infantry Officer Advanced Course and was promoted to major in 1966. In 1968, Powell returned to Vietnam. He was decorated with the Soldier’s Medal for bravery after he survived a helicopter crash and, while injured, single-handedly rescued three others.

Following his military service in Vietnam, Powell pursued a master’s in business administration from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. During this time, he accepted his first of many political positions, serving as a White House Fellow under President Nixon.

Powell served in both Republican and Democratic presidential administrations. He joined the Carter administration in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, eventually serving as senior military assistant to the deputy secretary throughout the late 1970s. During the Reagan administration, he served in the Pentagon as a senior military assistant to then-Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger.

In 1986, Powell was appointed Deputy National Security Advisor. Three years later, in 1989, he became a four-star general and was appointed by President George H. W. Bush as the twelfth chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer and principal military advisor to the President. He was the first African American chairman and the first chairman who earned his commission through the ROTC. Powell remained in this position for the first few months of the Clinton administration before retiring from the Army in 1993.

He was appointed Secretary of State by President George W. Bush in 2001, becoming the first African American to ever hold the position. Powell’s term in office was marked by the September 11 terrorist attacks and the start of the second Gulf War. He remained politically active after his retirement in 2005, notably endorsing Barack Obama for president in 2008.

The story of Colin Powell is marked by youthful initiative and outstanding public service to the military, the American people, and the country at large. He received bipartisan support throughout his public career, and embodied the determination, patriotism and democratic values that are emblematic of our nation—and in doing so cemented his legacy as an American hero.

Powell, who joined the Museum’s advisory Council in 2010, also served as one of the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s staunchest supporters. Both he and his wife, Alma Powell, are Founding Donors who provided generous personal support to both the Museum’s capital campaign and today’s Living History campaign to secure the Museum’s future. Powell also agreed to serve as one of the honorary chairs of the Living History campaign.

“[The National Museum of African American History and Culture] is filling a gap that’s existed in American history for so many years…and now it’s here and it’s beautiful, it’s magnificent, and it’s different than any other thing on the Mall…and I think the American people are going to love coming to this place and completing this part of our wonderful history of this great country.”

— Gen. Colin Powell

Powell was an invaluable member of our community. His determination, patriotism, and character inspired many—from those he led in the military to those he served in government. Powell created his legacy by “being successful every day” and, in doing so, left an immense impact on our nation’s history that will live on for generations to come.

It’s Okay Not to Be Okay: 7 Tips For Talking to Your Child About Depression

It’s Okay Not to Be Okay: 7 Tips For Talking to Your Child About Depression

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 2.7 million children between the ages of 11-17 were diagnosed with depression in the period of 2016 to 2019. Another study in 2020 states that at least nine percent of African American teenagers reported having symptoms of depression and the numbers have been increasing since then, according to a press release. Unfortunately, many people in the Black community don’t discuss mental health issues and very few will ever seek help for it though these disorders can be disruptive to their lives. You can help break this cycle by talking to your children about depression and working together to manage it.

Let them know it’s a medical problem

It’s common for children to think that what’s happening with them is unique and there’s nobody who can relate. You can help dispel this myth by discussing the fact that depression is a medical condition that affects millions of people, including adults. From a health perspective, it’s no different from finding out that you have any other illness. Most importantly, let them know that a doctor can help them manage it.

Discuss other conditions

It’s possible to have more than one mental health disorder at the same time. While talking about depression, let your child know that some people experience both depression and anxiety. A few of the symptoms to look out for are being worried about the future, wanting to avoid social situations, being afraid of separation from their parents and different phobias. You should also talk about panic attacks.

Listen without judgement

While giving them information, make sure there’s room for them to share their feelings without being judged. Though there are general symptoms of depression, it’s not uncommon for people to have experiences specific to them. What’s important is that they feel safe sharing with you so you can understand what your child is dealing with.

Be patient with their questions

Understandably, your child will have a lot of questions about depression and any other mental health disorder they might have. They might want to know about seeing a doctor, if they need to tell their friends, if their school will need to know and if they’ll need to take medication.

It’s best to do a lot of research so you can answer their questions well. If there’s something you need to find out, let them know that you’ll get back to them as soon as you’ve cleared things up.

Assure them it’s not their fault

Depression can be such a misunderstood condition and many children think they did something wrong to feel the way they do. Worse yet, they don’t understand why they should feel sad when nothing bad has happened. You should let them know that nothing they’ve done is causing their depression and they’re somehow being punished for their actions or thoughts.

Keep talking about it

Depression can be an ongoing illness, so you shouldn’t have one conversation about it and drop it. Studies show that depression can worsen over time—especially if your child is going through puberty. Experts recommend checking in on them regularly and letting them know you’re ready to listen to their issues at any time. It’s also helpful to stress the importance of letting you know if their symptoms have changed.

Give them self-care tips

Once you’ve discussed the symptoms of depression and what can cause them, you should offer some suggestions for self-care. Some activities like getting regular exercise, eating properly, sleeping well and making time for hobbies that excite them can help to reduce depressive episodes.

If your child is having trouble with any of these suggestions, it might also be a decent indicator that you need to see a mental health professional.

When To See A Professional

There are different types of depression and not all of them will require medication to be managed. The best thing to do is keep an eye on your child’s symptoms.

The typical symptoms of depression include feelings of worthlessness, losing interest in things that they found fun, feeling sad, changes in their sleep or eating patterns and having difficulty concentrating. If you notice that things are getting worse or they’ve opened up to you about feelings of suicide, contact a professional immediately.

The number of African American children who are dealing with depression is increasing and it will be up to their parents and guardians to help them. If you think your child is showing symptoms of depression, talk to them as soon as possible so they can get the help they need.

7 Meaningful Ways Your Business Can Honor Memorial Day

7 Meaningful Ways Your Business Can Honor Memorial Day

Besides grilling, sitting by a lake or pool and enjoying time with friends or family, there’s one more thing many of us associate with Memorial Day: sales.

In the weeks leading up to the annual holiday, you can’t miss the constant ads for deals, discounts and promotions at businesses across the nation. It’s supposed to be a day to honor and remember those who’ve died serving in the U.S. military, so why do we even have Memorial Day sales?

Some credit it to warmer weather pushing people outdoors (and to the shops); how Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer; the three-day weekend giving millions of people more time to buy; and even just simply the tradition of it.

But the commercialization of Memorial Day is not unlike any other holiday—, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving/Black Friday and Christmas sales to name a few—and it brings in tons of revenue for businesses across the country, sometimes even more than Black Friday. However, if a business doesn’t acknowledge what the day is actually for but jumps on the chance to offer deals and promos to rake in the money, it can rub people—especially veterans—the wrong way.

Here are seven ways to respectfully commemorate Memorial Day while still putting on special promotions and discounts.

Celebrate your military veteran employees

Get photos (from when they were in the service) and profiles of all veteran employees. Circulate this to the entire company with a message from leadership, and you can even consider posting the photos on social media with messages from the veterans themselves.

“This will highlight the contributions of your veterans plus reinforce the positive attributes of military service that align with your internal culture,” says Joe Beard, former  captain, West Point graduate and CEO and co-founder of CollateralEdge.

“It is also a great way for your employees to learn about each other.”

Recognize Memorial Day on your business’ social media pages and website (and do it in a meaningful way)

The first critical step: Don’t say “Happy Memorial Day.” This holiday is not the same as wishing someone a “happy holidays”—it’s a somber day to pause and reflect on the sacrifice millions of soldiers made for our freedoms.

Use your social media pages and website to share a veteran’s story or to share the history of Memorial Day and its significance. You could add icons or widgets on your website that link to community Memorial Day event information, historical facts about the holiday or national organizations for people to donate money or volunteer.

Sponsor or participate in a local Memorial Day event in your town

Cities and towns across the country observe Memorial Day with parades, fundraisers and community events. Sponsoring or  at a local Memorial Day event not only gets your business’ name out there, but it also connects you to the community in the right way.

“I believe everyone should take a day to remember why Americans can live the way we do. It is because of the fallen that we get to live in peace and comfort,” says Kyle Retter, U.S. veteran and owner of Fitness Premier 24/7 Clubs.

Volunteer at a veterans memorial cemetery

No matter if it’s a specific service project, general cleanup or even placing flags by tombstones, there are plenty of ways to participate. If there’s a veterans memorial cemetery nearby, gather your staff to volunteer for a day, or even a few hours.

“Memorial Day is about what we as a nation have achieved through the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. Not the rich, not the poor, but all of us, together,” says Zachary Malone, co-owner of EZ Elopements LLC and U.S. Army veteran.

“I think giving back is what truly honors those who have gone before us, and an organized platform such as a company or local office can do a lot of good in a small amount of time.”

Invite a veteran to speak to your team

If you don’t have any veterans on staff (or they aren’t willing to share their experiences), bringing a veteran in to talk with your team is a great way to get people focused on what Memorial Day really means.

“There are generations of veterans that are passing away, and they all have fascinating stories to tell,” Beard says.

“The inspiration and learnings could be unlimited for your team. Additionally, it’s a great way to honor a veteran.”

Donate a portion of Memorial Day sale proceeds

If you’re offering special sales for the holiday, consider donating all or a portion of the proceeds to a trusted charitable organization that helps families of fallen veterans or veterans in general. About 25,000 children have lost a parent who was an active duty member in the military in the past 35 years, according to Children of Fallen Patriots, with 60 percent of families reporting having trouble making ends meet.

Here are just a few of the thousands of organizations aimed at helping veterans and their families. Your city leaders might also have options to consider that are more local:

Hire a veteran, or initiate a program around hiring veterans

Although this is more of a long-term suggestion rather than a specific Memorial Day commemoration, it’s an effective way to honor veterans beyond the weekend.

“Transitioning from the military can be really difficult for many soldiers, especially those wounded in combat. What better way to honor veterans than by making sure you employ them and give them opportunities to continue contributing to society?” Beard says.

“Undoubtedly these employees will bring the right work ethic and cultural norms that will be additive to most businesses. This is really putting your money where your mouth is for senior executives.”

Motive Behind Fort Hood Soldier Vanessa Guillen’s Death Revealed In Leaked Affidavit

Motive Behind Fort Hood Soldier Vanessa Guillen’s Death Revealed In Leaked Affidavit

Texas officials filed a court affidavit on May 19 and unfolded a possible motive for the April 2020 death of Army Spc. Vanessa Guillen, according to the New York Post.

Cecily Aguilar, the married girlfriend of Spc. Aaron Robinson confessed to authorities that Robinson bludgeoned Guillen, 20, to death with a hammer after she saw a picture of Aguilar on Robinson’s phone based on 61-page Texas Department of Public Safety investigation. Aguilar stands alone, charged with the murder of Guillen that happened at the armory in Fort Hood, Texas, the New York Post reports.

“Aguilar later explained why Robinson killed Guillen, saying Guillen saw Robinson’s cellphone lock screen, which contained a picture of Aguilar,” the court document read. “[Robinson] told her he was worried about getting in trouble for violating the Army’s fraternization rules since Aguilar was still married to another soldier and he hit Guillen in the head with a hammer.”

The young soldier was reported missing, and her dismembered remains were found on June 30 by investigators at Leon River in Bell County, Texas, according to the Independent.

Aguilar told investigators that Robinson took her to Leon River and showed her Guillen’s body that he placed in a large black tote bag. Robinson then threatened Aguilar, putting a gun to her head and demanding she help him discard the body, according to the New York Post.

“Aguilar and Robinson placed the bones in three or four holes and thought they would not be discovered for a couple of years,” the court document states,  the Independent reports.

Aguilar had a relationship with Robinson while married to another soldier named Keon Aguilar. She eventually confessed once Guillen’s remains were found and the authorities moved to question Robinson. However, the 20-year-old soldier escaped after being placed under surveillance at Ford Hood, according to court documents. When the Killeen Police Department located him, Robinson shot and killed himself with a gun before they could take him into custody, according to the Independent.

Aguilar, faces federal charges on 11 counts: one count of conspiracy to tamper with documents or proceedings, two counts of tampering with documents or proceedings, three counts of accessory after the fact, one count of destruction, alteration or falsification of records in a federal investigation, four counts of false statement or representation, the New York Posts reports.

“Cecily Aguilar will try everything in her power to walk freely as we are being denied the truth at this very moment,” Guillen’s sister Mayra said to ABC13 News.

Mayra doesn’t believe Aguilar’s confession and the alleged reason Robinson killed Guillen.

“My sister was a very responsible person, that would not meddle into Robinson’s and Aguilar’s alleged ‘relationship,'” Mayra told ABC13 News. “We truly hope Vanessa receives justice, no family deserves to go through this. Vanessa should be here today, defending her loved ones and her country.”

DeVon Franklin Pushed Through The ‘Shame’ Of His Divorce To Become New Relationship Expert On ‘Married At First Sight’

DeVon Franklin Pushed Through The ‘Shame’ Of His Divorce To Become New Relationship Expert On ‘Married At First Sight’

Film and television producer, New York Times bestselling author, and motivational speaker DeVon Franklin announced that he, along with Dr. Pia Holec, will join Dr. Pepper Schwartz and Pastor Calvin Roberson as new relationship experts for the Lifetime’s show Married at First Sight, Entertainment Tonight reports.

The 44-year-old posted the news on his Instagram and admitted he intended to say no to the gig because he felt “shame” and believed he was a “failure” due to the dissolution of his marriage to actress Meagan Good. However, Franklin explained in his caption that he pushed back on the idea because of the need to help others, “Everything I’ve been through, I was able to draw upon to help a couple successfully sort through their issues (you’ll have to watch to find out which couple),” he teased.

A post shared by DeVon Franklin (@devonfranklin)

As Franklin disclosed to his fans that he signed on to the 15th season of MAFS before he filed for divorce from Good in December 2021, and the show’s producers said to him, “that didn’t matter to them because they still felt like I could help their couples.”

“I was going to tell them ‘No’ because I felt shame and that voice in my head said, ‘you’re a failure, how can you help anybody save their marriage when yours didn’t work out,'” Franklin wrote.

“That voice in my head also had me thinking about what would ‘people’ say? Would’ people’ approve or disapprove? And then I had to ask myself: Is this how I’m going to live the rest of my life? In fear about what ‘people’ say? And who are ‘people’ anyway? So I went back to the @mafslifetime team and told them YES, I’ll still come. I REFUSE TO LIVE IN FEAR OR SHAME!

According to legal documents, Franklin cited “irreconcilable differences” as the cause for the separation on August 21, 2021. The respected Hollywood producer and actress were often referred to as couple goals, met on the set of their 2011 movie, Jumping the Broom, and were married on June 16, 2012, although they share no children.

In January, Good, 40, dialogued with xoNecole during a Twitter Spaces conversation as she promoted her new show, Amazon Prime Video’s Harlem, and shared she is healing from what she describes as the “most painful” experience of her life.

“Still grieving, still hurt. It’s going to be a long time, but at the end of the day it has made God, even more, my lover and even more my husband, and even brought our relationship to new depths and new heights so I’m in gratitude for that,” she said.

Season 15 of Married at First Sight premieres is July 6 at 8p/7c on Lifetime, according to Cheat Sheet.

Children Amid 31 Dead in Stampede During Church Service in Nigeria

Children Amid 31 Dead in Stampede During Church Service in Nigeria

Disclaimer: This post contains mention of death.

As many as 31 people reportedly lost their lives on Saturday morning during a crowd surge at an event at King’s Assembly Pentecostal Church in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

A horrific stampede claimed the lives of entire families, crushed to death before the opening of the church’s “Shop For Free Programme,” a charity program that was to provide gifts and food in celebration of its fourth anniversary. Local news fear the death toll is expected to rise.

A witness claimed a pregnant woman and many children were amongst those deceased, reports The Associated Press

The charity event was set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, but some arrived as early as Friday to secure their spot and then at 5 a.m. that morning, confirms police spokeswoman Grace Iringe-Koko.

Sources say that a sports group was scheduled to have practice at 8 a.m., opening a small gate at the premises, giving the crowd entry to force their way inside. Those at the very front immediately got trampled.

“I counted about 21 dead bodies on the ground,” a witness said. “This is not the first time the church is holding this programme, but the crowd since yesterday till this morning is much. It was said that gift items and free food would be served. It is very painful.”

Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency representative Godwin Tepikor told the outlet that the bodies of the deceased were able to be evacuated and brought to the morgue by first responders.

Videos of the horrific stampede showed the clothing and shoes meant to be given out alongside masses of dead bodies.

The “Shop For Free Programme” was canceled while police investigated the cause of the crowd surge.

Similar stampedes have occurred in Nigeria, the continent’s largest economy.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 40% of the country’s population, or about 83 million people live in poverty.

The King’s Assembly Pentecostal Church declined to comment on the tragedy.

8-Year-Old Amaria Osby Found Dead After Begging Mother To Stop Suffocating Her With Plastic Bag, Prosecutors Say

8-Year-Old Amaria Osby Found Dead After Begging Mother To Stop Suffocating Her With Plastic Bag, Prosecutors Say

Disclaimer: This post contains graphic details of child abuse and death.

Eight-year-old Amaria Osby was found dead in an Uptown Chicago apartment around 11 a.m. May 25, police say.

Prosecutors confirm her mother, Andreal Hagler, 38, suffocated the child with a plastic bag on her 8th birthday as she pleaded, “Momma, stop!” because she claimed Amaria did not love her anymore, reports CBS News.

Hagler has been charged with first-degree murder, an offense that carries a minimum 20 year sentence in the state of Illinois if convicted.

According to authorities, Hagler’s brother went to check on his sister and niece after no response to phone calls. Once he arrived, he found both Amaria and Hagler unresponsive in the bedroom.

Prosecutors say the man discovered a “comforter on the bed that was covering another body… two small legs from the shins down were visible.”

After contacting police, they found Hagler was alive after attempting to commit suicide with a plastic bag over her own head.

Amaria was pronounced dead at the scene after being discovered on the bed in her underwear, with a bloodied nose, foamed at the mouth and blood on her thigh, per prosecutors.

An autopsy later revealed the child died due to injuries sustained from assault, consisting of internal bleeding in her scalp and brain, and asphyxia.

A toxicology report determined that Hagler had PCP in her system.

When in custody, Hagler admitted to smoking PCP and drinking bleach the night before when she committed the atrocious act. The 5-year-old refused to drink bleach as well, which prompted Hagler to smother Amaria with a plastic bag.

“She said that she felt it was their time to go, because they were both born on the 24th,” read a court filing.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services established they had previous contact with the family, however never for the children, but for domestic violence involving the adults. Their last visit was one day prior to the murder, but there were “no signs of abuse, neglect or danger were noted by our investigator,” said DCFS spokesman Bill McCaffrey in an email.

Hagler’s attorney said on Friday that the mother is left in a comatose state and on suicide watch. He says she was an occupational therapist for 17 years.

Hagler was denied bond that same day.
