Danyel Smith’s New Book, ‘Shine Bright’ Calls Attention To The Black Woman Icons In Pop

In the April 19 release of Shine Bright, author Danyel Smith chronicles a personal and detailed examination of the groundbreaking Black women who shaped American pop music.

“To say I ‘became’ editor-in-chief of Vibe in 1994—and the first woman and the first Black person to have the job, and the first woman to run a national music magazine—is a criminal abbreviation,” Smith writes in her new book, “Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop.”

(Penguin Random House)

Through her leadership of Vibe magazine and previous editor-in-chief role for Billboard, Smith’s intertwining of biography, criticism, and memoir is intentional.

Smith, who recently attended BLACK ENTERPRISE‘s Women of Power Summit as a moderator, is also the creator and host of the Spotify-exclusive Black Girl Songbook, a music and talk show that centers Black women in music. She has leveraged her pop and hip-hop culture expertise to write her book. She spotlights the intimate details of her personal journey and countless Black women who have also influenced her.

“One of the best parts about writing Shine Bright was to merge the memoir with the biography,” Smith told NPR. “I feel very much [that I don’t want] to explain things to anyone, I want to share with them — my joy, and facts and details about these women.”

The book aims to reclaim these women’s place in music history, from the 1960s hitmakers the Dixie Cups to musical icons such as Gladys Knight, Mahalia Jackson, and Whitney Houston.

“I feel a commonality with women who try to make things, women who are loud, women who say things, women who write things, [who] talk about themselves, sing about themselves,” Smith said. “I feel in league with them.”

Throughout her book, Smith parcels memories from her own life to relate to the issues or journeys these Black women in music have had to navigate themselves. According to the New Yorker, Smith talks about her mother’s boyfriend, whose stifling doubt about her writing gift reminded her of the disrespect and opposition that led these women to advocate for themselves.

“People say, ‘How can you say that Black women in pop don’t get the credit they’re due?’ Oh, they get credit. They don’t get the credit that they’re due. For everything that Beyoncé has, all the Grammys, the albums sold, the world tours, the trendsetting, the influencing, the voice, the putting in work since she was a child, she does not get the credit that she deserves. I’m up for the argument with anybody who wants to try me,” Smith said.

Late Fashion Icon André Leon Talley Left ‘Speechless’ Over ‘Finding Your Roots’ Experience

Late Fashion Icon André Leon Talley Left ‘Speechless’ Over ‘Finding Your Roots’ Experience

The late fashion icon and former Vogue creative director André Leon Talley was able to enjoy the “extraordinary” findings uncovered in an episode of Finding Your Roots that was filmed prior to his death.

Talley was known for his vibrant, outspoken personality, but the former journalist was left “speechless” while learning more about his family legacy on the PBS series, NBC News reported.

“I’m speechless,” Talley told host Henry Louis Gates Jr. “I have no words to articulate what I feel now. But it’s extraordinary to realize this history, that it is part of my history.”

Talley, who died in January at age 73, was reacting to learning about his great-great-grandfather who was bequeathed from one white owner to another. His experience on Finding My Roots shows the heartwarming experience he enjoyed prior to his death.

“I’ve often thought about them,” Talley said of his ancestors. “I’ve thought about, maybe imagine, in slavery or maybe not—but I just know that they were aware of being Black and indentured.”

“It was just the way the world was and the way the world is—and it’s a sad thing,” he added.

The episode was filmed in February 2021, nearly one year prior to Talley’s death from complications of a heart attack and COVID-19. Talley, a native of Durham, North Carolina, died in White Plains, New York, after decades of work in the fashion industry, as noted by The Chronicle, Duke University’s student newspaper.

Talley made history as the first Black creative director at Vogue. His presence in the fashion industry helped open doors for countless others while providing inspiration for future generations.

Among his firsts include being one of the first and only Black people to sit front row at Fashion Week events in the ’80s and ’90s. He also secured press coverage for designers of color, like LaQuan Smith.

Former NFL Star Marshawn Lynch Becomes Minority Owner in NHL Expansion Team

Former NFL player Marshawn Lynch and Grammy-winning rapper Macklemore are officially minority owners in the NHL’s expansion team, the Seattle Kraken.

Known as “Beast Mode,” Lynch had his best years in the NFL—and won a Super Bowl—with the Seattle Seahawks. He retired in 2019.

“On God, I’ve been a part of a lot of things, but this is something I never would have imagined,” Lynch said in a written statement. “As a young hyena, I always dreamed of playing on a professional team but owning one is something special. As I look back on some of my accomplishments–I retired before I was 30 and now being an owner of a professional club at the age of 35 -I’m [going to] continue to count my blessings. Being a part of the Seattle Kraken is something big for me.

“It gives me another chance to get a ring after helping bring the first NFL one to the city. And if you thought I was goin’ somewhere, nah Seattle, I’m here! Stand up!!!!”

Macklemore and Lynch have partnered with the Kraken Investor Group led by David Bonderman, the founder and majority owner, and Samantha Holloway, chairperson of the Kraken’s executive committee. Macklemore and Lynch will lead Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena initiatives to connect with hockey fans, music lovers and community members.

“I am a Seattle sports fan through and through, have been my entire life,” Macklemore said. “I think that sports define a city. They bring people together. It gives us one common purpose to root for. It’s really the spirit of the city in so many ways, and to be a part of that new era that is the Kraken, that is the NHL in Seattle, that is the new arena, to do that was a no-brainer in terms of the opportunity. It’s just something that I can’t really even put into words.

“It’s a big moment for myself, for Marshawn—we’re both super pumped to be involved—for my family and for the future.”

The new owners were present for the Kraken’s 4-2 home win against the Ottawa Senators Monday.

Lynch attended the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft when the Kraken announced their first 30 players. Lynch will be active in Seattle’s “Hockey is For Everyone” campaign and plans to work with the team to coordinate events concentrated on young people and community activism.

A Tall Order? Master P Says With Shaq Assisting, He Can Lead Lakers to Victory As Head Coach

After probably the most disappointing season in Los Angeles Lakers history, team owner Jeannie Buss fired the head coach Frank Vogel who led the team to a championship two years ago.

Now that the LeBron James-led team is looking for their next coach, a former rapper said he’d love a shot at leading the Lakers back to the championship victory.

No Limit soldier Master P is throwing his name in the hat to vie as the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. After a disappointing losing record of 33-49 season, Master P, born Percy Miller,l believes he can get the job done. He’s even suggested bringing along another Lakers legend in Shaquille O’Neal to lead by his side as an assistant coach.

Master P is no stranger to basketball.

The music mogul was good enough to earn, not one, but two tryouts for two different NBA teams. He was on the pre-season roster of the Charlotte Hornets in ’98 and then he landed on the roster of the Toronto Raptors in ’99.

This past Sunday, the serial entrepreneur spoke to TMZ in discussing his chance to lead the Lakers, basketball team.

“This Hollywood, anything can happen out here,” he said.

He continued: “I don’t know Jeannie Buss.”

He then pans to the cameraman saying, “If you know Jeannie Buss, tell her to bring me in for an interview.”

When asked what would he say to her if given the chance, he says, “Bring me in, I can help get us some Ws, championships.”

With basketball talents like James, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Davis, how would the “Ice Cream Man” gel with those teammates, and more pressing, how would Master P make it work since it didn’t work this past season?

The quick on his toes entrepreneur stated he would bring in other successful coaches to help him.

“I’ll bring some hell of assistant coaches with me. Shaq, John Lucas. I don’t know if Shaq wanna do that, but if he do, we can take over. I can’t see another team like that,” he said.

If this does happen, Master P guarantees a championship will be brought back to Los Angeles.

Social Media in Shambles Over Zaya Wade Kissing Her Boyfriend

Social Media in Shambles Over Zaya Wade Kissing Her Boyfriend

The judgmental world of social media can’t stop talking about Dwyane Wade’s daughter Zaya Wade openly kissing her boyfriend as seen through posted pics.

The Wades shared highlights from their Easter celebration through a series of photos posted by Zaya and Gabrielle Union, Zaya’s stepmom. The two are close. Union helped Dwyane come to terms with Zaya, who was born a male, wanting to transition to living as a female.

But social media is debating over the intimate photos Zaya posted with her boyfriend, who attended the Wade’s Easter festivities.

Union was the first to share a family photo showing her and Dwyane smiling proudly next to their three kids and two plus-ones.

“Family over everything,” Gabrielle captioned the post.

Dwyane’s eldest son Zaire, 20, was seen cuddling alongside his girlfriend while Zaya, 14, did the same with her boyfriend. Little Kaavia James held onto Daddy Dwyane while beaming from ear to ear.

Zaya followed up Gabrielle’s post with her own praising how she spent her Easter surrounded by love.

“I’ve had the best weekend, spending quality time with my family and s/o for Easter,” Zaya captioned the post. “I hope everyone has had a wonderful Easter today and a wonderful Passover this week!! I love you guys.”

The Wades are well aware of all the public scrutiny surrounding Zaya’s sexuality. There continues to be great debate around Dwyane allowing his daughter to transition so young. Zaya posting affectionate photos with her partner further ignited the public to pass judgment.

Andrew Caldwell, a.k.a. “Mr. Delivert,” was the first on Instagram to pass judgment on the Wades’ parenting style.

“I don’t care about preferences,” Caldwell wrote. “But I do know if your daughter was 14 you wouldn’t be pleased with her taking pictures of herself kissing her boyfriend at 14.”

A post shared by Andrew Caldwell (@andrew_c_caldwell)

“Respect is respect,” he captioned his post.

But there were many quick to criticize Caldwell and anyone else who took time out of their day to judge how someone else raises their kids.

“Honestly, we should let parents parent their children and move on with our lives,” one user wrote. “There’s so many ways we don’t even respect our own selves, our own bodies and our own families so I can’t match the respect part.

“Zaya lives in a world where her parents respect her actual thoughts and feelings more than their needing to over authorize, and she’s actually happy. Not sure many can say that about their own lives and their own children.”

Over on Twitter, onlookers debated what the issue was with Zaya dating another member of the trans community.

“I gotta be honest, I have never been this confused in my life,” one Twitter user wrote while reposting a few of the family’s photos.

“I am all for living your truth but this is a little wild.”

“Y’all know Zaya Wade. Dwyane Wades child who transitioned into a girl. She is like 13 and now dating a girl who transitioned into a boy,” they added.

But there were many who called out the critic telling them to mind the business that pays them.

“Ok…a teenage girl dating a teenage boy. What exactly is the issue? They’re both straight, isn’t that what y’all prefer?” one user wrote.

“What’s your point? Why are you bothered by something that has absolutely nothing to do with your life?” another user asked. “I’m sure your time would be better spent on self-reflection. Maybe you can figure out why you feel the need to criticize others’ choices.”

“You don’t think it’s weird that you have pictures of kids kissing in your phone?” added someone else.

Black Businesses Among Firms in North Carolina that Can Apply for Over $200 Million in Grants

Black Businesses Among Firms in North Carolina that Can Apply for Over $200 Million in Grants

Over $200 million in grants is available to a broad range of entrepreneurs, including Black-owned businesses in North Carolina, thanks to an expanded business recovery program.

The North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) plans to initiate the application for the second phase of its Business Recovery Grant (BRG) program on May 2, 2022, based on a news release. Changes to the program’s eligibility criteria revealed would enable many more businesses to qualify for the grants.

BRG “will issue a payment to an eligible North Carolina business that suffered an economic loss of at least 20% during the pandemic.”

It indicated the grant amount is “a percentage of the economic loss demonstrated by the eligible business or $500,000, whichever is less.” The application deadline is June 1, 2022.

Many ventures shut out of the program’s first phase can apply now. Along with “COVID-impacted businesses” like restaurants and hotels, BRG is open to other businesses struck by the pandemic. They include farmers/agribusinesses, lawyers, landscapers, tailors/dry cleaners, hardware stores, and mechanics.

“Barbers, cosmetologists, gyms, and other service providers were hit hard by the pandemic, and it’s important to expand these grants to help them too,” Gov. Roy Cooper stated.

“Our small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and strong support for them is critical.”

Plus, enterprises that gained a grant from specific federal programs are still eligible to apply for a grant in the second phase, per the news release.

The first application period ended in late January 2022. There is roughly $203.5 million left of the $500 million in funds initially approved for the program. The NCDOR says it worked with the North Carolina General Assembly to expand eligibility to certain businesses hit by COVID, but did not qualify for initial funds.

NCDOR Secretary Ronald Penny stated, “Our hope is that the expanded Business Recovery Grant program requirements will encourage more eligible North Carolina businesses to apply.”

His office, too, wants to ensure eligible businesses that incurred a “financial loss” due to the pandemic receive the funding.

Businesses can apply on May 2 and learn more details here.

Serena Williams Teams Up With Karat to Double the Number of Black Software Engineers in the U.S.

Serena Williams Teams Up With Karat to Double the Number of Black Software Engineers in the U.S.

Karat, the world’s largest interviewing company, today announced a strategic investment from Serena Williams to significantly scale Brilliant Black Minds, a program that improves access and inclusion across the technology industry. By opening the program to all current and aspiring Black software engineers and serving as Karat’s “Champion of Brilliance,” Serena will support Karat’s call on the industry to help add more than 100,000 new Black engineers to tech in the next decade.

Many Black software engineers face multiple barriers to entry for jobs in the tech industry, from structural inequities that delay early exposure to computer science to limited information about how the industry hires, fewer connections in their professional networks, and less opportunities to practice technical interviews. As a result, just five percent of all software engineers in the U.S. are Black.

Karat launched Brilliant Black Minds to close the Interview Access Gap that disproportionately impacts Black software engineers, according to a press release. Only 50 percent of the Black engineers Karat and Howard University surveyed have experienced a technical interview before they look for a job. However, the same research shows that confidence levels increase with more interview practice — 79 percent of respondents with three practice interviews say they are more likely to succeed. Equitable access to interview practice also has a significant impact on early career opportunities like internships. Respondents with more than three practice interviews are six times more likely to have had an engineering internship compared to those that never had one.

“The technology industry is focused on solving some of the world’s biggest challenges. My focus is ensuring the solutions to those challenges are developed by all of us,” said Serena Williams.

“There has never been a shortage of brilliance in Black America; only limits to the access and opportunities extended to our community. That is why I am proud to team up with companies like Karat who are taking actionable steps to bring more diversity and equity to the industry, as well as call on others to be part of the change.”

The Brilliant Black Minds program uses Karat’s Interviewing Cloud to deliver free interview practice, feedback, and coaching to help aspiring software engineers in this community prepare to successfully enter the tech industry. Designed to unlock engineering value and accelerate hiring, the Interviewing Cloud is a human + tech solution that delivers predictive, fair, and enjoyable live technical interviews conducted by a global network of interview engineers. The expertise and data generated from hundreds of thousands of interviews has enabled Karat to create more candidate-centric experiences, particularly for software engineers who have been previously overlooked by traditional hiring practices.

“We’re living in a world where engineering time grows more valuable every day, yet organizations are grappling with a multi-decade shortage of software engineers. The current approach is to source talent from the same talent pool over and over again, which reinforces the industry’s lack of diversity and makes it harder to find technical talent,” said Mohit Bhende, co-founder and CEO of Karat.

“The Brilliant Black Minds program helps solve this major business challenge by giving organizations access to a deeper, interview-ready talent pool. More engineers ultimately unlocks more engineering time, driving diverse and powerful innovations.”

With this investment from Serena Williams, the Brilliant Black Minds program is now open to all current and aspiring Black software engineers in the U.S. who want the opportunity to make progress on their technical interviewing skills. In Serena’s role serving as a “Champion of Brilliance,” she will teach the importance of practice and building a championship mindset to help participants land their dream job in tech.

“The tech industry is the biggest opportunity generator of our lifetime. And yet, those opportunities have not been distributed equally. People who look like me have been mostly kept out of the highest levels of tech,” said Anthony Mays, senior advisor to the Brilliant Black Minds program and former software engineer at Google.

“With Brilliant Black Minds, Black software engineers have a safe and collaborative space to learn how to crack the code on how the industry hires. All it takes is just one opportunity to change a person’s life, and the lives of those who come after.”

To get involved in Brilliant Black Minds and join the movement to double the number of Black software engineers in the U.S., visit www.karat.com.

Darren Dixon, Goldman Sachs’ Youngest Black Partner, To Start Own Fund

Darren Dixon, Goldman Sachs’ Youngest Black Partner, To Start Own Fund

In 2016, Darren Dixon was listed on Forbes‘ “30 Under 30” finance list. Four years later, the rising star in banking was named Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s youngest Black partner at 29.

Now 35, Dixon is exiting exit to start his own fund.

According to Bloomberg, Dixon is actively working on securing backers to launch an infrastructure-focused fund that would emulate his money-making group at Goldman. He most recently held the title of head of global capital solutions, a “group that structures complex deals and rescue financing for companies navigating trouble.”

Dixon’s departure from the Wall Street giant follows five other exits from the firm’s small pool of Black executives within the last year. In the executive summary of 2020 sustainability report, CEO David Solomon said there was “still a long road ahead” on improving the diversity of the bank’s workforce, adding that he would “continue to make this effort a personal priority.”

Last year, Goldman reported that 49 of its 1,548 executives were Black. The paltry 3.2% is slightly higher  than the number of Black executives in its exclusive partnership club.

Starting at Goldman as a summer intern, Dixon has devoted nearly 14 years to the firm. He rapidly rose from its principal funding and investments business, where he thrived in Latin American structured credit trading, managing, and financing assets like toll roads, film libraries, television shows, and physical gold.

Impressively, Dixon was promoted to managing director before he turned 30. After making a name for himself as a money-maker, he has had a stake in Harvey Weinstein’s film studio and a 50% interest in the blockbuster television franchise CSIBloomberg reported.

To date, only one Black partner will be left to carry the torch for diversity in the firm’s markets business, the company’s largest division with more than $22 billion in revenue.

Shortly after attaining Goldman’s highest rank, Dixon’s exit, among others, signifies that their tenure was much shorter than the average Goldman partner.
