Democratic Donor Convicted to 30 Years in Prison for Fatally Injecting 2 Black Men With Meth

Disclosure: This post involves mention of graphic details about sexual abuse perpetrated by Ed Buck.

Wealthy Democratic donor Ed Buck was sentenced to 30 years in prison for operating a drug den, distributing lethal doses of methanmethamine, and enticing men for prostitution Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

The 67-year-old benefactor continued to feed his fetish of inserting large doses of methamphetamine into young vulnerable Black men even after two men were found dead in his West Hollywood apartment, reports the New York Times. The deaths were deemed accidental overdoses and no charges were filed against Buck.

Twenty-six-year-old Gemmel Moore was Buck’s first victim, who died in July 2017. Timothy Dean, 55, died nearly two years later in January 2019. The predator specifically chose his victims to be suseptable gay men, oftentimes homeless or struggling with drug addiction, that could easily be controlled with his power and influence for “party and play” encounters. It wasn’t until a third victim, Dane Brown, survived the methamphetamine overdose that Buck was arrested. All three men were Black.

In July 2021, Buck was found guilty a federal jury on all nine counts, consisting of two counts of distribution of methamphetamine resulting in death, four counts of distribution of methamphetamine, one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, and two counts of enticement to travel in interstate commerce for prostitution, per a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

A prominent political figure in Hollywood, Buck would pay men to use drugs during their encounters and then inject them with meth while performing sex acts on them. Not only would he use meth, but also GHB, the “date rape” drug, and clonazepam. On some occasions, Buck would introduce the drugs intravenously.

Federal prosecutors say he would sometimes inject the drugs without consent and while the victim was unconscious. The perverse fetish was enough to keep him behind bars for the remainder of his life, prosecutors maintained.

“Ed Buck preyed on young Black males who were vulnerable, isolated and were often fighting addiction,” said Kristi K. Johnson, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. “The evidence showed that Buck, in addition to causing the death of two men, also degraded his victims with racial slurs and exploited their circumstances, including homelessness and addiction, to indulge his sexual proclivities. This sentence will effectively remove a predator and hopefully deliver a degree of justice to the families of the victims.”

The 36-year-old intends to use her athletic dexterity during her retirement to run another race for pay equity and equality for women in sports.

When she was pregnant with her daughter in 2018, Felix wrote an op-ed in the New York Times criticizing the brand for not providing additional security for pregnant athletes, according to CBS News.

“My disappointment is not just with Nike, but with how the sports apparel industry at large treats female athletes,” she said. “Athletes are told to shut up and play. We are told that no one cares about our politics. We are told that we’re just entertainers, so run fast, jump high, and throw far. And don’t mess up. But pregnancy is not messing up.”

In March, she announced the initiation of the “No” Grants program, which grants women “short-term financial assistance” if they face the consequences of establishing boundaries in their place of employment.

“This season I’m running for women,” she said, ending her post. “I’m running for a better future for my daughter. I’m running for you. More to come on that, so stay tuned, but I’ll be sharing a series of announcements that I’m hoping will make the world better for women. Here’s to my final season.”

A$AP Rocky Steps Into The Spirits Game And Releases His First Whiskey, Mercer + Prince

A$AP Rocky is an entertainer who is known to wear many hats. He has extended his boundaries beyond rapping and immersed himself in producing, fashion, modeling, acting, and becoming an entrepreneur.

He recently launched Mercer + Prince, a new blended Canadian whiskey that he established in partnership with Global Brand Equities and E. & J. Gallo, according to a press release.

His new spirit celebrates that it was created beyond the sphere of traditional whisky production and parades its unparalleled smoothness influenced by Japanese Mizunara oak. The whiskey is distilled and aged in American white oak barrels for four years and then combined in Canada, Vogue reports

“This is the only category of spirits that would allow us to have a contemporary approach,” says the rapper. “Whiskey has a reputation of being more macho and traditional, but we wanted to redefine it for everybody—taking influence from different regions and cultures, and blending it into one. The way to push culture forward is for everything to be blended.”

The amber-colored liquor presents a fruity aroma, a smoky-sweet taste, as well as caramel, cinnamon, baked apple, and vanilla notes, according to Vogue.

“You don’t even need anything to drink it with—you can just drink it neat,” says Rocky to the fashion magazine. “I don’t know too many liquids that you could just take straight out the bottle. That was the point—it’s like instant gratification.”

A$AP Rocky took inspiration for the name from his favorite cross streets in New York City, where people of various backgrounds and cultures intersect, according to the press release.

“What I love about New York is being able to just walk around the streets and soak up inspiration like a sponge,” Rocky says. “When you think of that cross street at Mercer and Prince, you see so many different cultures and types of people walking around. It’s diverse, and that same template went into making this whiskey.”

During his ideation process, A$AP Rocky borrowed upon his sophisticated taste and ground-breaking style to envision the bottle’s sleek design, packaging, and functionality.

The mission for his whisky was to serve immediate pleasure with the inclusion of two cups on either end of the other bottle so a consumer could pour a drink for themselves and a friend. As a result, the bottle can sit vertically or horizontally on a table.

“I used my fashion eye when it came to the cosmetic and technical design of the bottle,” he says. “I first drew the design on a napkin. It’s a social bottle,” adds Rocky. “It’s quick for sharing. You can just enjoy a drink in a conversation with somebody right away.”

Mercer + Prince is available at ReserveBar and can be purchased later this summer at the suggested retail price of $29.99. For more information, please visit mercerandprince.com and follow @mercerandprince on Instagram.

Bodycam Footage Captures Moment Police Fatally Shot 68-Year-Old Man Who Was Responding to A Burglary

Bodycam Footage Captures Moment Police Fatally Shot 68-Year-Old Man Who Was Responding to A Burglary

Police have released the bodycam footage that captured the moment cops fatally shot a 68-year-old man whose family says he was just responding to a burglary.

Charles Calhoun was shot and killed by police on March 23 after officers claim he pointed a gun at them and wouldn’t drop it despite being told to, AJC reports. On Friday, Calhoun’s family held a press conference asking for transparency during a thorough investigation.

The family says Calhoun heard a noise outside his home and was responding to a possible burglary when officers, who allegedly did not announce themselves, arrived at the scene. The grieving family says Calhoun only fell in the street due to lingering effects from a bad bout of COVID-19 and would never point a gun at law enforcement, as noted by CBS 46.

“When you’re concerned that there’s a burglar that is approaching your home, you don’t know who’s who and what’s what. It’s a confusing time,” The family’s attorney, Mawuli Davis said.

Clayton County police say they were responding to multiple 911 calls about a man with a gun moving suspiciously around homes in Jonesboro just before 5:30 a.m. One caller claimed to have heard a gunshot, which prompted officers to follow department protocol and take out their rifles.

Officers claim to have seen Calhoun moving around the neighborhood with a large gun. At one point, he’s accused of pointing his gun at one of the officers which prompted one officer to fire his rifle shooting Calhoun at 5:52 am.

Police rendered aid to Calhoun until paramedics arrived. However, Calhoun was pronounced dead shortly after 6:01 am, officials said. Calhoun’s family is taking time to review the footage before releasing an official response.

“It is unfortunate that the Clayton County Police Department elected to release this information without arranging to meet with the family first,” a statement from the family said. “In the coming days, the family will review the video posted on YouTube and issue a public statement.”

Drake Places $200K Bet On Golden State Warriors Winning The Western Conference

Deep pockets Drizzy’s fingers are itching once more now that the NBA Playoffs are here.

The Toronto rapstar has recently made headlines not for hot new music drops, but for his outrageously massive gambing wagers ranging from online roulette stakes to the Los Angeles Rams winning the Super Bowl.

Soon after announcing his exclusive partnership with virtual gambling site Stake, while vacationing in Turks and Caicos with Jack Harlow, he was able to bless one lucky islander with a bag on behalf of the wager site.

Now that another major sporting event has made its way into center stage, Drake is putting all his money on the Golden State Warriors to win the Western Conference, in a $200,000 bet.

The Raptors global ambassador shared the wager on his Instagram story, having the odds presented at +500 and a potential payout of $1 million.

Since landing the multi-year deal with Stake, Drake has been exclusively using the platform for his gambling streaks, including live streaming his plays and posting screenshots of the many bets he’s got under his belt.

The Warriors are currently third in the west, having battled it out between first and second with the Phoenix Suns throughout the season. They finished the regular season with 111 points per game and top three on defense, with 105.5 points per game to opponents. They start the playoffs with high expectations now that the Splash Brothers are back, consisting of All-Star point guard Stephen Curry and veteran shooting guard Klay Thompson, who was out the past two years due to a torn ACL and Achilles.

The Dubs are determined to regain the championship title, led by Curry, Thompson, and power forward Draymond Green, per the Bleacher Report. This MVP-caliber team has what it takes to back the 6 God rapper’s bet, having formed close ties to the team since their 2015 NBA Championship.

Today marks Game 1 against the Denver Nuggets in the Golden State’s attempt at a seventh championship ring and a major bag for Drake.

Virginia Tech Athletics Leading Force in NIL Space for Student-Athletes

Virginia Tech Athletics is going the extra mile for student-athletes to secure the bag when it comes to monetizing their name, image, and likeness (NIL).

VTA has announced a new collaboration with INFLCR, a software platform for elite athletics to track and deliver content in their network. This partnership would make NIL deals more accessible to student-athletes through their Hokies Exchange platform, which connects students to businesses, per a press release

After a business registers and is approved for Hokies Exchange, they will be placed into a database available for student-athletes to connect with organizations. Organizations will be able to filter and make selections on student-athletes based on chosen specifications.

Per director of athletics Whit Babcock, three NIL collectives consisting of Commonwealth NIL, Hot Route Marketing, LLC, and Triumph NIL, LLC, have extended their services to Virginia Tech student-athletes, businesses, and donors.

“I’m thrilled that Virginia Tech and our administration have provided our athletes with numerous opportunities in the NIL space,” Virginia Tech women’s basketball head coach Kenny Brooks said, according to the press release. “From education and the Hokies Exchange platform to these new NIL collectives, we are doing everything that we can to ensure our student-athletes have the resources to make informed decisions and have the confidence to approach NIL opportunities in a manner that will benefit them. Our mission is to support student-athletes in all of their endeavors on and off the court. This is another step in the right direction for our department and I’m delighted to see this put together with our athletes in mind.”

Additionally, the school revealed on Thursday that financial aid will be awarded to those in good academic standing.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this financial incentive for our student-athletes to make the type of academic progress that will benefit them for years to come after graduation,” Babcock said. “We are currently finalizing our criteria for this program and plan to roll out the details to student-athletes, their families and our coaching staffs this summer. We anticipate beginning this financial reward package beginning in Fall 2022. Thanks to the tremendous success of our Drive for 25 campaign and the generosity of our Hokie Club donors, we intend to be very competitive in this space to ensure Virginia Tech remains a very attractive destination for the nation’s top student-athletes.”

KFDX News Anchor Shatanya Clarke Dies At 27 From Brain Tumor

KFDX News Anchor Shatanya Clarke Dies At 27 From Brain Tumor

Shatanya Clarke, a treasured news anchor for KFDX, passed away from a brain tumor after being diagnosed two years ago, Fort-Worth Star-Telegram reports

Clarke died in her home on Thursday, April 14. Many described the 27-year-old as having a “bigger-than-life spirit.”

“Shatanya was a bigger-than-life spirit,” said News Director Adam P. Bradshaw to Texoma’s Homepage. “Her wit and personality could brighten anyone’s day. She had a passion for telling stories in a way that really hit home. To say our family and this community will miss her is the understatement of the year.”

Clarke signed on as a reporter for the Wichita Falls station in 2018 and eventually became a news anchor in the last year of her life, said the news station.

She assisted local charities by leading fundraising efforts by featuring a “Help for the Helpers” segment during her newscast to provide help to community members through the coronavirus pandemic and lent her time to various other volunteer opportunities, according to Star-Telegram.

Clarke documented her health battle with the Myxoid Mesenchymal on her YouTube Channel Shatanya’s Journey.

The Jamaica native endured brain surgery, chemotherapy, and other treatments after she began experiencing extreme headaches. Despite her obstacles, she maintained an optimistic outlook and continued to work, according to KFDX, the Star-Telegram reports.

“I’ve come to accept that my life turned out exactly as it was designed, or destined to be,” Clarke said in her final moments in a YouTube video. “Whether I like it or not, whether I understand the reason or not, I cannot change the things in my past. I can only control my present, and possibly make choices that positively affect my future.”

The vigil for Clarke will occur at 7 p.m. Monday, April 18, in Park Central on Scott Avenue, located in downtown Wichita Falls, the Texoma’s Homepage reports

Brittney Griner’s Months-Long Detainment in Russia ‘Because of a Gender Issue’ Says WNBA Players Union President

Brittney Griner’s Months-Long Detainment in Russia ‘Because of a Gender Issue’ Says WNBA Players Union President

The WNBA Players Association’s president, Nneka Ogwumike, maintains that Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner remains in custody in Russia due to “a gender issue.”

As previously reported, the 31-year-old Olympic champion was detained by police in Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport heading to New York after finding cannabis vape cartridges in her luggage. She is facing drug smuggling charges with a possibility of 10 years in prison for having the cannabis oil pen, according to officials.

Ogwumike made an appearance on Good Morning America Tuesday to shed some light on Griner’s situation.

“We move intentionally and given the nature of Brittney’s situation — it was very important for us to be intentional about doing the best thing to ensure that we don’t compromise her coming home,” Ogwumike told host Robin Roberts.

“A lot of that had to do with educating ourselves about the details of what was going on. As much as we could know. But then understanding how important it was for us to be strategic about when and how we speak about her.

The WNBA Players Union president then stated that Griner is being held on pre-trial lockdown because of her gender.

“When is it not? It’s disappointing that the question of it being a gender issue is top of mind now when it comes to this type of circumstance but the reality is she’s over there because of a gender issue, pay inequity,” Ogwumike said.

“I played in Russia for four years and played in Poland for one year and China for two years. We go over there to supplement our incomes and quite frankly to maintain our game. Our teams encourage us to keep up with our game by going over there and being more competitive. There’s so much that’s at play that, you know, we live politically intrinsically.”

The interview ended with Ogwumike continuing to uplift Griner’s community engagement by working to resume with “BG’s Heart & Sole Shoe Drive,” created to help benefit those affected by homelessness in Phoenix.

“She’s our sister and as a league we do everything together, we mobilize and energize each other and for us to be able to do that until she gets back is top priority for us. We have to continue to be one and move as one.”

Last month, Griner requested to be released on house arrest in Russia but was ultimately denied.

South Carolina Death Row Inmate Opts for Firing Squad Execution Over Electric Chair

South Carolina Death Row Inmate Opts for Firing Squad Execution Over Electric Chair

A Black man serving a death row sentence in South Carolina since 1999 has decided to die by firing squad rather than lethal injection or electric chair as his execution date looms closer, making him the first in the state to do so.

Fifty-seven-year-old Richard Bernard Moore was sentenced to death at the turn of the millenium for the murder of a convenience store clerk, James Mahoney, during a robbery in Spartanburg, and is set to be executed on April 29, reports CNN.

The state of South Carolina however, scheduled for a man to die but is unable to carry out the execution by lethal injection due to their last dose of the drugs having expired since 2013, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC).

This left Moore with the unimaginable decision of choosing his own fate, opting for death by firing squad, a capital punishment method the Southern state has not seen before.

In a court filing yesterday, Moore made his decision but added that he still has faith for two pending court challenges deeming the unconstitutionality of the state’s death penalty procedures.

“I believe this election is forcing me to choose between two unconstitutional methods of execution, and I do not intend to waive any challenges to electrocution or firing squad by making an election,” he said in a statement.

Moore’s attorneys filed a stay of execution with the state Supreme Court to delay his being put to death, under a “veil of secrecy midst a global pandemic.” It was denied.

South Carolina has not executed an inmate since 2011, but after revamping its capital punishment facility as of last month, is ready to resume with executions.

In a press release, the SCDC described the procedure, stating the firing squad is to stand in an opening of the death chamber’s wall, facing the inmate. The inmate will then have the chance to speak their last words before being strapped to the metal chair and hooded. Finally, an “aim point” is set over the inmate’s heart at which point the execution squad will fire.

South Carolina is one of eight states that continues to use the electric chair and one of four to allow a firing squad, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
