Department Of Education Approves $415 Million In Student Debt Forgiveness For 16,000 Borrowers

Department Of Education Approves $415 Million In Student Debt Forgiveness For 16,000 Borrowers

The Department of Education (DOE) has approved $415 million in borrower defense claims for 16,000 former students after new evidence shows their schools misled them in obtaining loans.

According to CBS News, the latest round of student loan forgiveness brings the total amount approved by the DOE to $2 million for more than 107,000 borrowers.

“The Department remains committed to giving borrowers discharges when the evidence shows their college violated the law and standards,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a DOE press release Wednesday. “Students count on their colleges to be truthful. Unfortunately, today’s findings show too many instances in which students were misled into loans at institutions or programs that could not deliver what they’d promised.”

Approximately 1,800 students who attended DeVry University will be given more than $71 million student loan discharges after the DOE reviewed “voluminous amounts of evidence” suggesting the school continuously misled prospective students when it came to loans.

Between 2008 and 2015, DeVry inaccurately claimed 90% of its graduates who actively sought employment obtained a job within six months of graduating. According to the DOE, the actual percentage was just under 60%, which school leaders knew and continuously lied about for years.

Meanwhile, the DOE has forgiven 1,600 borrowers of more than $53 million and is identifying more cases to forgive after Westwood College falsely reported between 2002 and 2015 that its graduates have job placement rates of 80% or higher and adding that graduates “would make $50,000 or more.”

Westwood also said if a student does not land a job within six months, it would help pay their bills. However, the DOE found “no evidence Westwood made good on its pledge,” the Education Department said.

“In fact, its job placement rates were grossly inflated, and its salary promises were based upon national federal data while actual Westwood graduates often made half or as little as one-fourth of those amounts.”

This is the third time Westwood College, which is now closed, has been caught defrauding students.

The DOE also forgave 130 students of $3.1 million in student loan debt from the ITT Technical Institute after determining the school inaccurately told students its nursing program would require programmatic accreditation. ITT has repeatedly failed to obtain accreditation due to insufficient resources and unqualified faculty.

Other schools that have had debt forgiven include the Minnesota School of Business ($3 million for 270 students), Corinthian Colleges, and Marinello Schools of Beauty ($284.5 million for 11,900 students)

Indiana School Counselor Under Fire for Allowing Kids to Skip Black History Lessons

Indiana School Counselor Under Fire for Allowing Kids to Skip Black History Lessons

With CRT (critical race theory) becoming a major topic in politics and in schooling, one school has allowed its parts to let their children opt out of Black history lessons during Black History Month.

A letter sent by an Indiana elementary school guidance counselor giving parents this option went viral on social media. And, according to NBC News, the employee is facing criticism.

“In honor of Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, I will be coming around and teaching lessons related to equity, caring, and understanding differences,” Sprunica Elementary School counselor Benjamin White wrote.

“Studies show that students who have a greater understanding of diversity in the classroom and outside world will demonstrate improved learning outcomes such as improved grades, better peer relationships, and greater career success later on. These lessons can provide a great impact on students and help facilitate a better learning environment for all.

“If you would like to opt your child out of receiving these lessons then sign the form below and have your child return it to the school to give it to the teacher.”

WAFB reported that after receiving backlash from the memo, Emily Tracy, the superintendent of Brown County Schools, responded with a letter to parents condemning what White wrote.

“We do not allow students and parents to opt-out of required curriculum, including instruction on social studies and histories,” she wrote. “Any decision related to parental consent and curriculum determinations are made in accordance with the law. We are looking into the matter to determine the justification for the language included in the letter. We will respond to any parental concerns on an individualized basis.”

Administrators added that the school district supports teaching Black history.

UPS Debuts First-Ever Apparel Line Supporting Black-Owned Businesses

UPS, the official logistics partner of New York Fashion Week: The Shows, which ended Wednesday, commemorated the deal by launching its first official apparel line, Be Unstoppable.

With the debut limited-edition collection coming during Black History Month, UPS partnered with InTheBlk to present three emerging Black designers during one of fashion’s biggest events, AdWeek reported.

The apparel is the latest extension of the shipping giant’s Proudly Unstoppable initiative, aimed at amplifying and supporting minority-owned small businesses during the pandemic.

“Across the global economy—talent, intelligence, ideas, and vision are equally distributed. Unfortunately, resources are not. With this campaign, we saw an opportunity to change that,” UPS’ CMO Kevin Warren said.

“Through the proceeds from our Be Unstoppable gear and our partnership with InTheBlk, we have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference for emerging Black fashion brands and their unstoppable spirit.”

In an effort to connect the company with a younger, more diverse audience, UPS released a line of modern streetwear consisting of T-shirts, jogger sets, caps, water bottles, wireless speakers, and backpacks ranging from $28 to $98, WWD reported.

The collection was inspired by the creativity of Black creatives across art, music, and fashion and pays It pays homage to Black designers and creatives like Olivier Rousteing and late fashion icons Virgil Abloh and André Leon Talley.

All proceeds from the 14-piece collection and an additional $50,000 in grants will go to InTheBlk, a nonprofit dedicated to uplifting emerging Black fashion brands.

“This is important because entrepreneurs of color—including fashion designers—operate more than eight million businesses, generate $1.4 trillion in revenue, and employ more than seven million people,” Warren said.

“We believe an intentional focus on diversity, equity and inclusion not only leads to better outcomes throughout our business but helps lift communities and the wider economy. When small businesses win, we all win.”

Slam Dunkin’: College Basketball Star Deja Kelly’s Big-Time Endorsement Deal

Student-athlete Deja Kelly, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been added to the roster of Dunkin’ Donuts endorsers.

Consumer brands are now swarming to college sports after the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced last June that student-athletes were cleared to profit off their name, image, and likeness, or NIL. While Dunkin’ is  no stranger to the sports world—former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, for example—it is one of the first to recruit college athletes in spokesperson deals.

“I am so excited to announce that I am officially the captain of Team Dunkin’! I am a longtime Dunkin’ fan so this is truly a dream come true—stay tuned to see how Dunkin’ fuels me on and off the court,” the 20-year-old guard  posted on Instagram.

As part of the deal, Kelly must “promote the coffee and doughnut brand on social channels and have their own co-branded meals in their college towns,” according to Dunkin’.

Her new deal of monetizing her NIL comes after signing with talent agency William Morris Endeavor (WME) Sports in September.

In high school, Kelly became a top 10 recruit before choosing to hoop at UNC, which has storied a men’s basketball program. She turned down multiple offers. “With me, I was really strategic in my recruiting process, and I wanted to go to a school where I could build my own name, I could build the program up, I could set my own legacy at the school eventually and win some championships of my own, instead of going to a school that was already established,” she said.

Dunkin’ Donuts has confirmed plans to scout more student-athletes throughout the year, taking full advantage of the new NCAA guidelines.

This is a great opportunity for student-athletes to shine on their grind.

New York City Mayor Struggles With NYC Vaccine Mandate That Allows Visiting Athletes to Play But Does Not Allow Local Players That Privilege

The coronavirus vaccination mandate in New York City has left Brooklyn Nets point guard, Kyrie Irving off the basketball court due to the talented, yet controversial player refusing to innoculate himself with the vaccination. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is hoping that the current New York City mayor, former police officer Eric Adams, will take a look at possibly altering that protocol to allow Irving back on the courts in New York.

According to NBA.com, earlier this week, Silver said he believed Mayor Adams should look at the coronavirus mandate that was put in place by Adams’ predecessor, former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. The former mayor mandated that athletes playing in the city of New York had to be vaccinated against the coronavirus to be able to play in public venues.

Appearing on ESPN, Silver feels that “It just doesn’t quite make sense to me that an away player who’s unvaccinated can play in Barclays, but the home player can’t.” He also points out that out-of-town visitors playing for opposing teams are actually allowed to play in New York City with no penalty.

“I mean, I think if ultimately that rule is about protecting people who are in the arena, it just doesn’t quite make sense to me that an away player who’s unvaccinated can play in Barclays but the home player can’t,” Silver said.

The New York mayor was approached about what Silver said about the city’s vaccine protocol.

“I think the rule is unfair. I believe that we are saying to out-of-town athletes that they can come in and not be vaccinated. Yet New York athletes, you have to be vaccinated,” Adams stated.

“But I am really, really leery about sending the wrong message. Having this city close down again keeps me up at night. And the message was put in place, the rule was put in place. To start changing it now, I think it would send mixed messages. So I’m struggling with this, just to be honest with you.”
