Atlanta Is Quickly Becoming A Growing Hub For Tech Companies To Find Black Talent

Major tech companies are flocking to Atlanta to grab up the city’s diverse tech workers in what is quickly becoming an “arms race” for IT talent.

Apple, Google parent, Alphabet, and Microsoft have all opened offices in the Peach State’s capital city in recent years. Additionally, CNBC reports that Visa is opening a new Atlanta office this year, where its chief diversity office will build relationships with startup companies and diverse tech workers.

“We know that our customer base at all levels includes the Black community, and we are not shy about wanting the Black community in our workforce,” Visa’s diversity chief, Michelle Gethers-Clark, told CNBC.

According to a CBRE 2021 report, Atlanta is the eighth-best city for sourcing tech talent. Additionally, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University are all based in the city and have partnerships with tech companies. Even HBCUs outside Atlanta are partnering with tech companies.

Not only does Atlanta have the IT talent and educational partnerships, but the Peach State is also emerging as a hot spot for cryptocurrency and bitcoin mining.

Fortune reports Georgia is attracting crypto miners due to its relatively low power prices and large amounts of nuclear and solar power, which allows mining companies to call them sustainable or emissions-free. Regulators in the state have also been friendly to miners, pushing the industry toward solar programs that enable companies to offset their emissions.

“At the end of the day, Georgia wants this business here,” Matt Schultz, CleanSpark’s executive chairman, told Fortune. “They’ve done everything in their power to grow Bitcoin in the state.”

Atlanta is also home to several tech incubators and innovation centers, including the Atlanta Tech Village, Atlanta Tech Park, and the Propel Center.

More than a dozen companies that were started or based in Atlanta have hit the threshold for unicorn status, meaning their valuations have reached over $1 billion, including Bakkt, Kabbage, which was purchased by American Express last year, and Calendly.

Swizz Beatz Confirms Verzuz Will Be Available On Instagram After Fans Criticize Subscription Model

Swizz Beatz had to ease tensions online after Verzuz fans blasted the brand for a move that would transform it into a subscription, pay-to-view model to watch future battles.

Last week, the Verzuz Instagram page shared a video promoting its Valentine’s Day battle between soul singers Anthony Hamilton and Musiq Soulchild. But instead of telling fans to tune in on Instagram Live, like in all of the past battles, Verzuz prompted viewers to sign up for a Triller Verzuz Pass to gain access.

“A night of amazing artists, music, and vibes!! We’re SOLD OUT for in-person tickets, but you’ll be able to watch on VERZUZTV.COM or in the @triller app!!” Verzuz captioned the post.

“To watch, sign up NOW for the #TrillerVerzPass (14-Day trial* included (*trial offer expires on 2/11!!,” they added.

But after catching wind of the potential new subscription-based model, Verzuz fans took to Twitter to vent their frustration.

“We’re fighting inflation and #Verzuz expects us to pay for a battle that’s been free for 2 years? During Black History Month?? Please hang it up,” one user tweeted.

“#Verzuz used to be for the culture now it’s for capitalism. Tsk tsk,” added someone else.

“LMAO YOU GOTTA PAY????? Baby, this is DONE,” tweeted one user.

Black Entrepreneur Creates Credit-Building App After Seeing How Credit Scores Hinder Black And Brown Americans

Black Entrepreneur Creates Credit-Building App After Seeing How Credit Scores Hinder Black And Brown Americans

Abbey Wemimo is working to close the racial wealth gap through his credit-building startup, Esusu, which was built to create equitable financial access for everyone.

Esusu raised $130 million in venture capital at a $1 billion valuation according to Forbes, making it one of the few Black-owned tech startups to ever reach “unicorn valuation. Esusu captures rent-payment data and reports it to major credit bureaus, which allows renters to use their rental payment histories to boost their  credit scores.

“No matter where you come from, or the color of your skin, your financial identity shouldn’t determine where you end up in the wealthiest nation in the world,” Wemimo told Forbes.

Wemimo has experience in being denied access to credit. Not long after his family arrived in the U.S. in 2009, it was turned down for a bank loan; his mother had to pawn jewelry to get started her. He was also turned down for a loan to start his business, forcing Wemimo to build Esusu slowly from the ground up.

According to estimates by Esusu, more than 45 million Americans do not have a credit history, which holds them back from obtaining property, a vehicle, and, in some cases, even a cell phone. Wemimo said his company will help those who have no credit by validating and reporting their rental payment histories.

Typically, rental histories and payments do not count toward a person’s credit score. Renters will pay $50 to  access the platform and to interest-free loans for rental assistance if needed. Property owners meanwhile will pay $3,500 for access to the platform and $2 per unit per month, which can help manage risk when renting a property. The platform currently has more than two million rental units on its platform.

Black Americans struggle to this day when it comes to gaining access to credit and it’s mostly not their fault. According to CNBC, decades of racial discrimination in the finance and banking industry, have given Black Americans and minorities a trauma-like response when seeking credit or other financial tools, including a bank account or credit card.

An investigation conducted by the National Fair Housing Alliance found that 60 percent of the time applicants of color who were more financially qualified for a loan than a White counterpart were still offered higher priced car loans, which cost them more than $2,600 over the course of the loan.

Meet The HBCU Graduate And Educator Set To Release ‘The ABCs Of Black Wall Street’ Books

Former Wall Street analyst Claudia Walker is dedicated to educating the masses about financial literacy within the Black community.

Her new collection, The ABCs Of Black Wall Street books, empowers educators and parents to teach the youth that there is still a future for Black Wall Street.

The Oakland-based speaker, author, and teacher has made her mark in teaching kids about the value of HBCUs and investing in the classroom.

As a Spelman graduate, she continues to shed light on her experiences, while working to close the opportunity gap for Black students to learn finance and the options to apply to HBCUs. Her ambitious efforts led her to launch her publishing company HBCU Prep School, to become a part of the solution.

“I want to normalize investing within the community and give my students age-appropriate information and spark conversations that help them recognize they can be investors, even if they are still in high school,” Walker told Afro Tech.

“There are conversations they can start having with their families that open up those lines of communication around building generational wealth.”

In January 2022, Walker shared with the world that she will be releasing The ABCs Of Black Wall Street, which consists of a coloring book and board book.

According to the website, the children’s collection breathes new life into the heart of Tulsa’s historic Greenwood District. From Madam C.J. Walker and O.W. Gurley to Williams Dreamland Theater and Osborne Monroe’s Roller Skating Rink, children will learn about the innovators, activists, entrepreneurs, and establishments that helped pioneer one of America’s wealthiest Black communities.

“The story of Black Wall Street is an amazing example of community members coming together, not just for their good, or the good of their family, but for the good of an entire community and for generations to come,” Walker said regarding why she wanted to write the book.

In addition to the launch of her book, Walker has distributed free stocks to underserved communities. She hopes that the stocks will give a child an early start to their financial journey. Community members, parents, and teachers received stocks on the child’s behalf. Recipients ranged from eight-months-old to the age of six.

Walker strives to normalize conversations surrounding “wealth-building, agency, and investing.”

The ABCs Of Black Wall Street Greenwood Avenue bundle is available for preorder online.

“My great granny always said if you live long enough, you’ll realize that everything (and the best things) are on God’s time, never yours. The best Valentines ever. Been waiting for this moment my entire life. Thank you @drewsangster. 💕 I’m a #GirlDad babbbbbyyy. Song: Unchained Melody.”

New Edition Announces The Culture Tour with Charlie Wilson and Jodeci

Veteran R&B group New Edition headlines an iconic lineup with the legendary Charlie Wilson, along with special guest Jodeci, the bad boys of R&B.

The Culture Tour kicks off a 30-city tour on Feb. 16, 2022, in Columbus, Georgia, with stops in Los Angeles, New York, and New Edition’s hometown of Boston.

In 1983, New Edition released their debut single “Candy Girl” off their self-titled album, hitting Number 1 on the Billboard Hot Black Single Charts, jumping ahead of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.” Since then, New Edition has released more than six studio albums, received multiple Soul Train and American Music Awards, and a Grammy Award nomination.

In 2017, BET Network released their three-part Biopic: The New Edition Story, airing over three consecutive nights. The mini-series attracted 29 million total viewers. That same year, the network honored them with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing the group as one of the innovators of R&B. They have remained one of the most influential R&B groups of the last 30 years and counting, catapulting the solo careers of Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant, and Bell Biv DeVoe.

Viewers experienced a sense of nostalgia during the American Music Awards in November 2021, when New Edition performed alongside 80s boy band New Kids on the Block. Often credited as the creators of the modern-day boy bands, New Edition will attract fans old and new. Starring all six members, Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill, this is the group’s first tour in more than five years.

With a career spanning over four decades, Charlie Wilson, also known as “Uncle Charlie,” is one of the few names in music that resonate with multiple generations of music lovers.

Beginning as the co-founder/lead singer for The Gap Band (“Outstanding, “Burn Rubber On Me,” “Yearning For Your Love,”) Wilson later embarked on a successful solo career garnering himself thirteen Grammy Award nominations, eleven NAACP Image Awards (including two wins), the BMI Icon Award in 2005 and the 2009 Soul Train Icon Award. His Number 1 solo hits include “Charlie, Last Name Wilson,” “There Goes My Baby” and “You Are,” to name a few. In 2020 and 2009, he was named Billboard magazine’s Number 1 Adult R&B Male Artist and remains the Top Adult Male Artist with the most Number 1’s in three decades.

Additionally, he was honored by BET with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 with an all-star tribute by Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, and Snoop Dogg.

Representing the sound that shaped 90s R&B, the iconic group Jodeci joins the tour as a special guest. The group debuted their first album, “Forever My Lady,” in 1991 and has sold more than 20 million records worldwide. They have been the soundtrack to many music lovers’ most memorable moments for over 30 years with hit songs “Forever My Lady,” “Stay” and “Come And Talk To Me.”

After a several-year hiatus, the group has reunited and is ready to show fans why they reign supreme as one of the most iconic R&B groups of all time.

Mary J. Blige Surprises And Uplifts Inspirational, Partially Paralyzed TikToker

Mary J. Blige Surprises And Uplifts Inspirational, Partially Paralyzed TikToker

Iconic Grammy Award-winning singer and philanthropist Mary J. Blige inspires, transforms, and empowers.

So it’s no surprise that following her highly-praised Super Bowl performance, she would dedicate her time to showing some real love to a fan who has faced many challenges.

The R&B singer teamed up with Good Morning America to surprise India Sims, who has lived with being partially paralyzed her entire life and found solace, comfort, and inspiration in Blige’s life journey as chronicled through her music.

Sims’ journey, which began in childhood, has led her to share her positive energy online, by uplifting and educating others. Her TikTok videos are full of dancing and lived experiences.

“My message is to inspire you, get up and do something different,” Sims, a mother of two, told the news outlet.

To spread her message, Sims recently posted a video with a series of photos along with Blige’s hit song and self-love mantra, “Good Morning Gorgeous.” A fan of the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul”, Sims resonates with the words and uses the affirmations to inspire her.

Mary J. Blige explains that her song is not about “vanity” but a song that encapsulates “who we are.”

While surprising Sims on a video call, Blige gave her full support.

“You’re an amazing woman. You’re what we need on this earth. Inspiration, inspiration to me.”

“You are a truly a blessing to all of our lives. You give us so much courage to keep pushing past the things that try to strain us,” she continued. “You are so beautiful, you are so powerful and we need you on this earth.”

This heartwarming surprise comes after Blige’s incredible performance at the Super Bowl, in which she wowed viewers and SoFi Stadium attendees with her 2001 hits “Family Affair” and “No More Drama.”

BLACK ENTERPRISE previously reported that Blige released her 15th studio album, “Good Morning Gorgeous” just two days before her legendary half-time show performance. The project includes 13 tracks with features from Anderson.Paak, Fivio Foreign, Dave East, DJ Khaled, and Usher.

Blige continues to be her sister’s keeper through her music and in real life.

Naomi Campbell, the multi-hyphenate British supermodel and businesswoman, is giving the world a glance into her motherhood on the cover of the March 2022 issue of British Vogue.

Campbell first announced becoming a mother on Instagram in May 2021, with a post of her daughter’s tiny feet resting in the palm of her hand. Now, the 51-year-old can be seen posing with her baby in her arms for the public to see. This move, befitting of a supermodel, speaks to Campbell’s openness about her new journey.

She also makes it known that her daughter was not adopted, but did not share the exact details around her arrival or her name.

“I always knew that one day I would be a mother, but it’s the biggest joy I could ever imagine. I’m lucky to have her and I know that,” she told the magazine.

Campbell, who is planning to write a memoir that will include more details about her daughter, continued, “I can count on one hand the number of people who knew that I was having her. But she is the biggest blessing I could ever imagine. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Her blessing comes after an incredible long-standing career in the modeling industry, which she began at the age of 15. As a career woman, Campbell tells the magazine that her daughter is a priority.

“My daughter comes first,” she told the publication. “Everything I do, I do for her – that’s it. It’s so completely selfless, isn’t it?”

Toxic Energy: Kanye West Trolls Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson, Keeps Posting Ex’s Private Texts

Toxic Energy: Kanye West Trolls Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson, Keeps Posting Ex’s Private Texts

Kanye West’s unpredictable behavior has him in the tabloids and gossip pages as the combative billionaire has gone on the warpath with his estranged wife Kim Kardashian’s current beau, Saturday Night Live’s Pete Davidson.

The erratic musician and fashion stalwart has been sending and posting private, now-deleted texts between him and his ex-wife vowing to “be back together” even though Kardashian has carved out a new path to peace.

Although the eccentric producer is no longer claiming that he can’t see his kids, as evidenced through his daddy Super Bowl date night with his children, Ye seemingly has a new mission to make amends with matrimony.

Ye, who is known for going on social media posting sprees and then deleting the posts, has picked back up on that practice. According to a recent Instagram post, the “Heartless” rapper is seriously yearning to be back with Kardashian and their children.

(Instagram)

Also, in a since-deleted Valentine’s Day Instagram post, Ye insists that he does not have beef with his estranged wife, and he does have “faith” that they will, once again, be together.

“I DON’T HAVE BEEF WITH KIM I LOVE MY FAMILY SO STOP THAT NARRATIVE. I’M NOT GIVING UP ON MY FAMILY…. I HAVE FAITH THAT WE’LL BE BACK TOGETHER”

Ye Instagram post

Yahoo has reported that Ye had a truckload of roses delivered to Kardashian on Valentine’s Day.

“MY VISION IS KRYSTAL KLEAR”

Ye Instagram post

But in the same vein, Ye launched a series of posts targeting Davidson, which has Kardashian concerned that Ye might cause one of his faithful followers to hurt the comedian.

(Instagram)

Ye took aim at Davidson in several ways, including posting a picture and making unsolicited comments about his tattoo of former first lady Hillary Clinton with the caption:

“Y’all seen that tattoo, but if I speak up, then I’m crazy. I told you not going to use that one no more. When a garbage man goes to work, he gonna smell like trash. But it’s time to take the trash out the house,” he said.

(Instagram)

He also posted a fight night poster of him and Pete Davidson, who he refers to as “Skete.”

(Instagram)

He captioned the photo, “This ain’t about Skete [Pete], people. It’s about selling y’all a narrative. Skete just playing his part in Frozen 3 — except it’s not in the theaters. This time, it’s on Daily Mail. Tell Bob and the entire Disney staff you wasted your money on Star Wars and Marvel — because even though it makes money, you will never control the high schools.”

In a series of private texts, Kardashian pleaded with Ye to stop posting the exchanges, which he refused to do and continued to out her.

Many online, including best-selling author, speaker, and digital strategist Luvvie Ajayi called out Ye’s turbulent behavior as “abusive.”

“KANYE IS A PROBLEM. He has a HISTORY of this type of harassment against the women who walk away from him. He publicly disrespected Amber Rose too. And he faces ZERO consequences for his out of pocket behavior against the women who say “I’m done,” Ajayi wrote.

Ajayi continues: “We’re being entertained by Kanye’s antics but I feel for the mother who is watching her kids’ father melt down and using her as target practice. And for the woman who sees the whole world celebrating her tormentor.”

Others are calling out Ye, and even though he has mental health issues, support for him has waned.

It has also been reported that Ye and actress Julia Fox are no longer an item but “remain good friends.”

Fox’s representative confirmed on Monday that the pair had gone their separate ways: “Julia and Kanye remain good friends and collaborators, but they are no longer together.”

In a now-deleted Instagram post, Fox also posted that she and West are “on good terms.”

“I have love for him but I wasn’t in love w the man,” Fox wrote in the message.
