Supreme Court Upholds Arizona Voting Restrictions In Racial Discrimination Case

The Supreme Court upheld two Republican-backed voting restrictions in Arizona, rejecting claims they discriminate against minority voters.

The 6-to-3 decision overturned a lower court decision to uphold Arizona’s policy of invalidating ballots cast in the wrong precinct and a law criminalizing the collection of mail ballots by third party community groups or campaigns.

Arizona Democrats argued data shows both restrictions disproportionately hurt Latino and Native American voters in the state and violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act which prohibits any action resulting “in the denial or abridgment of the right to vote of any citizen on account of race.”

Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the opinion for the six conservatives said section 2 requires openness to voting, but not equal outcomes.

“It appears that the core of [Section 2] is the requirement that voting be ‘equally open.’ The statute’s reference to equal ‘opportunity’ may stretch that concept to some degree to include consideration of a person’s ability to use the means that are equally open. But equal openness remains the touchstone,” Alito wrote according to CBS News. “Mere inconvenience cannot be enough to demonstrate a violation of [Section 2].”

Justice Elena Kagan wrote in the dissent the majority committed violence to the Voting Rights Act.

“Wherever it can, the majority gives a cramped reading to broad language,” Kagan wrote. “And then it uses that reading to uphold two election laws from Arizona that discriminate against minority voters.”

The decision hands a victory to Republicans who are pushing voting restriction bills forward at lightning speed in order to suppress Black and BIPOC voters. The For The People Act is still being pushed by some Democrats, but unless the moderate side of the party including Sen. Joe Manchin (W.V.) change their minds and agree to eliminate the filibuster, it’s virtually impossible.

Some Democrats are hoping they can pass the narrower the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, but that is also considered a long shot.

The decision is also sure to affect the Justice Department’s eeeeeeeeeeee against the state of Georgia for its voting restrictions bill. Although the department appeared to anticipate Thursday’s ruling according to the New York Times, the decision also addressed discriminatory intent.

“The court today also makes it harder to prove intentional racial discrimination in passing a voting rule, making it that much harder for D.O.J. to win in its suit against the new Georgia voting law,” Richard Hasen, a law professor at the University of California, Irvine, wrote.

The Hispanic National Bar Association released a statement on the ruling ruling Congress and Biden to take action.

“In recent years, we have seen a growing trend of state-led initiatives focused on restrictive voting laws that disproportionately affect Hispanic voters and other voters of color,” HNBA President Diaz-Yaeger said in a statement. “The Supreme Court’s ruling today further weakens our federal court system’s ability to shield voters of color from such discrimination.

“We must not turn back the clock on voter access. Our democracy is only successful if every voter has full and equal access to cast their ballot. We urge President Biden and Congress to take bipartisan actions to strengthen our existing voting rights laws, and to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act so that every American is protected from racial discrimination and voter suppression.”

Rumors of Rapper Biz Markie’s Death Are False, According to his Manager

The rumors circulating about the death of Marcel Theo Hall, who we know as the rapper and celebrity DJ, Biz Markie, are NOT true.

According to Pitchfork, as the news, which was falsely reported, started circulating that the popular rapper, had died, his manager set the record straight

“The news of Biz Markie’s passing is not true,” Jenni Izumi wrote in a written statement. “Biz is still under medical care, surrounded by professionals who are working hard to provide the best health care possible. Biz’s wife and family are touched by the outpouring of love and admiration from his friends, peers, and fans alike. At this time, we ask for your continued thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Biz had hits in the late 80’s, early 90’s with “Make the Music with Your Mouth Biz,” “Just a Friend,” and “Vapors.” The human beat-boxer even had a dance named after himself called “The Biz Mark.”

The news had affected so many people, including journalist Roland S. Martin who sent out several reports via his Twitter account.

Markie was reportedly hospitalized in 2020 for an illness that was related to Type II Diabetes and reportedly suffered a stroke.

DMX’s Final Scenes in Upcoming Action Thriller ‘Doggmen’ Will Be Completed Using CGI

We lost a great, yet, troubled artist when Earl Simmons, also known as DMX passed away earlier this year.

Luckily for us, the rapper and actor was still busy working and we’ve already been blessed with hearing his posthumous release, Exodus. Now, after learning he was working on another movie, although the movie hadn’t yet wrapped, through modern technology, the role he portrayed in the film will still allow the film to be completed.

According to NME, the project DMX hadn’t completed yet was a movie called “Doggmenand one of his co-stars of the film, Tara Reid spoke to the publication about what’s taking place now. “Doggmen” is an action thriller written and directed by Antonio Simmons and the producers plan on using CGI (computer-generated imagery) to bring DMX “back to life” to complete his scenes in the film.

“It’s a movie called “Doggmen.” It’s his [DMX’s] last film and it was really interesting because he didn’t get to finish the whole film,” Reid told columnist Allison Kugel. “They had to do what they did with Paul Walker (in 2015’s Furious 7, his last, posthumous, film). They make these facial sculptures and they put it on a face, and it looks exactly like him. It’s crazy.”

“The last couple of scenes that he has to film, that will be what they are doing. It’s incredible and it looks so real. So, that is how they are going to film his last scenes, and I’ll be in those scenes with him.”

The iconic rapper was admitted to the hospital earlier this year on April 2nd after a reported drug overdose. He then suffered a heart attack and was taken off life support while at White Plains Hospital. DMX was surrounded by family during his final days.

DMX died on Friday, April 9. He was 50 years old.

Meghan McCain Tells The Media to ‘Do Better’ After Announcing Her Exit From “The View”

Meghan McCain Tells The Media to ‘Do Better’ After Announcing Her Exit From “The View”

Meghan McCain has answered the prayers of many by announcing her exit from “The View.”

On Thursday, McCain announced on-air that she would be leaving after the season ends in late July, WGN-TV reports. McCain has been a standout on the show these last four years due to her outspoken conservative views that often ruffle the feathers of her co-hosts.

It was just a few weeks ago when McCain faced backlash after she got into a heated debate with Whoopi Goldberg about the current and former president. Now she says fans can enjoy a few more weeks of arguing until she’s gone for good.

“I will be here another month, so if you still want to fight a little more, we have four more weeks,” McCain said. “This was not an easy decision. It took a lot of thought and counsel and prayer.”

Earlier this month, McCain went viral after upsetting Goldberg during a discussion around President Biden and former President Trump.

“Well with all due respect, I don’t care if he’s apologizing. He just embarrassed himself and he looks like Trump,” McCain quipped after repeatedly cutting Goldberg off from making her point, via Decider.

“I don’t care that you don’t care, just hear what I’m saying!” Goldberg said, to which McCain clapped back while rolling her eyes, “Well I don’t care that you don’t care, Whoopi, so we’re even.”

Goldberg moved forward to a commercial break while adding that McCain, “can be how you always are.” But McCain made sure she got the last word telling the “Sister Act” star that, “You can be how you always are!”

As the lone conservative on the show, McCain was credited for sticking to her views despite the criticism she received from her co-hosts and viewers. While making her exit announcement, she sent a message to the media telling them to “do better” when it comes to covering the women-led show.

“My final note to the world watching … The media needs to do a better job of covering the women on this show,” McCain said, as noted by Fox News. “We are covered with deep misogyny and sexism by the media. If five men were doing what we do every day, I really do believe that we’d probably have a Pulitzer Prize.”

No Indictment for Georgia Officer Who Fatally Shot Black Man During Traffic Stop

No Indictment for Georgia Officer Who Fatally Shot Black Man During Traffic Stop

Former Georgia State Patrol officer Jacob Thompson will face no indictment for fatally shooting 60-year-old Julian Lewis during a traffic stop last August.

On Monday, a Screven County grand jury declined to indict Thompson for killing Lewis last summer after he was pulled over for a broken tail light, AP reports. Thompson had been arrested and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault in the Aug. 7 shooting.

Lewis was shot in the head and Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents have alleged that Thompson gave inconsistent statements regarding events leading up to the shooting, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Thompson claimed that he thought Lewis was about to run him down after he allegedly revved the engine, but authorities found that Lewis’s car was actually disabled when Thompson fired the fatal shot.

Now, Lewis’s family and attorneys are demanding that video footage of the shooting be released.

“We believe this was a very strong case,” the Lewis family attorney Francys Johnson said. “The evidence was there. We want to see the video; it has not been shown. Show us the evidence.”

Johnson is also calling for another grand jury to rule on the case and a meeting between local prosecutors and Lewis’s family.

“What happened August 7 was murder,” Johnson said. “This grand jury determined that the GBI was wrong and a superior court judge was wrong in finding that there was no probable cause to indict Thompson.”

The Lewis family is also backed by the metro Atlanta-based law firm of Davis Bozeman.

“This is why so many people have no faith in the criminal justice system when it comes to justice for Black people in this State and across the country. It is heartbreaking for this family, but not a surprise to us,” Davis said.

The family announced their intention to sue the state for $13 million back in November. They argued that Thompson acted recklessly while attempting to pull over Lewis for an alleged broken tail light. Thompson used his cruiser to push Lewis’ car off the road and shot him about a second later, authorities say.

Kamala Harris’ Office Littered With Dysfunction, Frustration

Kamala Harris’ Office Littered With Dysfunction, Frustration

Vice President Kamala Harris’s office and her team is experiencing low morale, communication issues and diminished trust among aides and officials.

According to a Politico report, much of the frustration has been directed at Tina Flournoy, Harris’ chief of staff. Aides and staff told Politico Flournoy has created an insular environment where ideas are ignored or quickly dismissed and dragged out. Additionally, aides say Flournoy  refuses to take responsibility for delicate issues and blames others when things go wrong.

Despite many pointing fingers at Flournoy, two administration officials have pointed the finger at Harris, saying the issues begin at the top.

“People are thrown under the bus from the very top, there are short fuses and it’s an abusive environment,” a person with direct knowledge of how Harris’ office is run told Politico. “It’s not a healthy environment and people often feel mistreated. It’s not a place where people feel supported but a place where people feel treated like s—.”

Flournoy is a longtime Democratic operative who worked for former President Bill Clinton’s staff and on Al Gore’s 2000 campaign

The issues have complicated the tasks Biden assigned Harris with, including dealing with the southern border.

When Harris made the decision to visit El Paso last week ahead of former President Trump’s visit this week, it blindsided many in her office and left many scrambling including those responsible for making Harris’ travel arrangements and others tasked with crafting the administration’s messaging.

Symone Sanders, Harris’ pushed back against the complaints saying Flournoy has an “open door policy” and without Tina “Black women like me would not have the opportunity to work in politics.” Sanders also called the anonymous officials cowards.

“We are not making rainbows and bunnies all day. What I hear is that people have hard jobs and I’m like ‘welcome to the club,’” Sanders added. “We have created a culture where people, if there is anything anyone would like to raise, there are avenues for them to do so. Whoever has something they would like to raise, they should raise it directly.”

Defenders of Harris also pointed to the fact that Black women are often subjected and held to higher standards than men, therefore an office that is tough and demanding to some may seem dysfunctional; to others.

Less than a year into Biden’s term, people are already leaving the Office of the Vice President to search for other opportunities. Top staffers  Karly Satkowiak and Gabrielle DeFranceschi have left recently as well as Rajan Kaur, a member of her digital team.

130 Countries Support 15% Global Corporate Tax Rate

130 Countries Support 15% Global Corporate Tax Rate

Reuters – Most of the countries negotiating a global overhaul of cross-border taxation of multinationals have backed plans for new rules on where companies are taxed and a tax rate of at least 15%, they said on Thursday after two days of talks.

The Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which hosted the talks, said a global minimum corporate income tax of at least 15% could yield around $150 billion in additional global tax revenues annually.

It said 130 countries, representing more than 90% of global GDP, had backed the agreement at the talks.

It added that new rules on where the biggest multinationals are taxed would see taxing rights on more than $100 billion of profits shifted to countries where the profits are earned.

“With a global minimum tax in place, multinational corporations will no longer be able to pit countries against one another in a bid to push tax rates down,” U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement.

“They will no longer be able to avoid paying their fair share by hiding profits generated in the United States, or any other country, in lower-tax jurisdictions,” he said.

The Group of Seven advanced economies agreed in June on a minimum rate of at least 15%. The agreement will go to the Group of Twenty major economies for political endorsement at a meeting in Venice next week.

Technical details are to be agreed by October so that the new rules can be implemented by 2023, a statement from countries that backed the agreement said.

The nine countries that did not sign include low-tax EU members Ireland, Estonia and Hungary, and South Korea.

Welcoming the deal as the most important international deal reached in a century, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said he would try to win over those holding out.

“I ask them to do everything to join this historical agreement which is largely supported by most countries,” he said, adding that all big digital corporations would be covered by the agreement.

The new minimum tax rate of at least 15% would apply to companies with turnover above a 750-million-euro ($889-million)threshold, with only the shipping industry exempted.

The new rules on where multinationals are taxed aims to divide the right to tax their profits in a fairer way among countries.

Companies considered in scope would be multinationals with global turnover above 20 billion euros and a pre-tax profit margin above 10%, with the turnover threshold possibly coming down to 10 billion euros after seven years following a review.

Extractive industries and regulated financial services are to be excluded from the rules on where multinationals are taxed.

Instagram Just Made it Easier for Users to Locate U.S. Black-Owned Businesses

Instagram Just Made it Easier for Users to Locate U.S. Black-Owned Businesses

Let’s face it, the way most people find new brands to buy from has changed significantly.

Social media offers a fresh supply of potential customers within a sea of hashtags, retweets, tags, or shared stories. Instagram paid close attention to who is using the platform and how they are doing it. And now, Instagram is lending a hand to U.S. Black business owners with shops on Instagram by allowing them to display a “Black-owned” label on their profiles.

Per Instagram’s announcement, these businesses may even be “highlighted” in locations such as the Shop tab, to assist “potential customers” with finding them. Curated collections of Black-owned businesses will be available in the @Shop tab.

http://

Additionally, Instagram accounts such as @blackownedeverything, @ghettogastro, @alexandrawinbush, and @browniepointsforyou have partnered with Instagram to raise awareness about Black-owned businesses which have Instagram accounts.

Sprout Social, a company which builds social media software for marketers, identified Instagram as a top five most-downloaded app “in both the App Store and via Google Play last year.” According to Sprout Social, Instagram users totaled over 1 billion in 2020.

And some people still do not realize that Facebook owns Instagram.

“Facebook purposefully tries to keep the Instagram brand as separate as possible; they even operate a separate office. There’s no Facebook branding in the Instagram app. You really have to be a savvy tech insider to get that,” Josh Constine, TechCrunch’s editor-at-large said in a 2018 CBS News interview.

Although some users may not like that “photos, videos, messages, and stories” users shared on the platform can be archived, business owners may use this feature to help them repurpose content, too.

Liz Cheney, Other Trump Critics Named To Capitol Riot Congressional Panel

Liz Cheney, Other Trump Critics Named To Capitol Riot Congressional Panel

Reuters – Some of former President Donald Trump’s most prominent critics, including Republican Representative Liz Cheney and the Democrats who led the two impeachments against him, were named on Thursday to serve on a special congressional panel probing the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced eight members of the committee that will investigate the events leading up to and on Jan. 6, when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop Joe Biden from being certified the winner of last November’s presidential election against Trump.

Five people died as a result of the violence, including a U.S. Capitol Police officer. Other law enforcement officers suffered severe injuries as they battled the angry mob.

Just before the attack, Trump delivered fiery remarks at the White House and then encouraged his supporters to march to Capitol Hill.

Cheney was stripped of her House Republican leadership position in May after voting in January to impeach Trump and continuing to repudiate his false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him by massive voter fraud.

Multiple courts as well as the U.S. Department of Justice have rejected Trump’s allegation.

While Cheney did not attend the news conference with Pelosi, a Democrat, and the other seven newly-named committee members, all of them Democrats, she issued a statement saying, “Congress is obligated to conduct a full investigation of the most serious attack on our Capitol since 1814.”

Chairing the panel is Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson, who also heads the House Homeland Security Committee that has been looking into the Jan. 6 events.

Other members include Representative Adam Schiff, who took the lead in the December, 2019 impeachment of Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and Representative Jamie Raskin, the lead prosecutor in last January’s second impeachment of Trump on a charge of inciting an insurrection.

In both cases, the Senate failed to convict Trump amid strong opposition from most Republicans.

Pelosi did not comment on whether Trump would be called to testify.

‘NOT MAKING ANY THREATS’

Behind the scenes, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has threatened to strip committee assignments from any Republicans who agree to join the panel, according to a House Republican aide.

“I’m not making any threats on committee assignments,” McCarthy told reporters at a separate news conference.

McCarthy, pressed by reporters, did not say whether he will name any of the members to the remaining five seats on the panel. Pelosi noted, however, that with Thursday’s naming of the eight members, there was now a “quorum” for the special committee to conduct its work.

On Wednesday the House voted, largely along partisan lines, to establish the special committee after Senate Republicans blocked the creation of an independent commission Pelosi originally sought.

The committee will have the power to subpoena witnesses.

Republican leaders have resisted any special panel to investigate the Jan. 6 riot, noting existing congressional committees have been doing their own probes and that more than 500 people already have been charged with crimes.

A new, high-profile congressional investigation likely would keep questions alive on Trump’s activities on that day, as Republicans rev up their campaigns to win majority control of the House in the 2022 congressional elections.

But Raskin said of the new “select” committee: “We need to figure out who organized the violence on January 6. How did they organize it, and why did they organize it. What were the purposes of the different critical actors who were present on that day.”
