Fully Vaccinated People Need Not Worry Too Much About People With COVID-19, CDC Says

Fully Vaccinated People Need Not Worry Too Much About People With COVID-19, CDC Says

A vaccinated person who is exposed to someone with COVID-19 does not need to be screened.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has new guidances that will relieve some people. Those who have their full vaccinations, do not have to be too cautious around those who become sick by the novel disease, the New York Daily News reported.

Experts say that the rules are reflective of the studies that state nearly half of Americans have received their shots once and nearly 40% are completed vaccinated.

“At this point we really should be asking ourselves whether the benefits of testing outweigh the costs — which are lots of disruptions, lots of confusion and very little clinical or public health benefit,”  professor Dr. A. David Paltiel of Yale’s School of Public Health said.

It is possible for a vaccinated person to get COVID-19. However, it would not be as severe as one who did not get vaccinated, which means that there is no need to be concerned about complications or major interruptions in the workplace, home, or school.

If even a vaccinated person were to get the coronavirus, it is shorter, less painful, and does not spread too far, which means there are no worries about quarantining and shutting down establishments, according to studies backed by CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.

However, some people in the healthcare field are worried about signaling the wrong message, as more than 30,000 still get infected with the deathly disease on a daily basis.

“The average Joe Public is interpreting what the CDC is saying as ‘This is done. It’s over,’” said Dr. Michael Mina of Harvard University, a leading advocate of widespread, rapid testing.

Black Woman Obtains Law Degree 20 Years After Facing Rejection

Black Woman Obtains Law Degree 20 Years After Facing Rejection

A 41-year-old Black woman is celebrating obtaining her law degree 20 years after she couldn’t get accepted into any law schools.

Amber Goodwin is preparing for graduation at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, in St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 6, Good Morning America reports. It was a two-decade journey after she was rejected by her schools of choice. After obtaining her master’s degree, Goodwin founded the Community Justice Action Fund (CJAF), her gun violence prevention program focused on communities of color.

But she couldn’t fight her desire to attend law school and pursue a career on Capitol Hill.

“My mentality was: I’m going to keep applying places and they have to tell me no,” Goodwin said. “I’m not going to call the question on myself. If people tell me no, then that’s on them, and I’ll just keep trying.”

After three years of hard work, Goodwin is excited about making her dreams come true.

“Sorry not sorry in advance for all the law graduation photos y’all are about to get,” Goodwin said in a tweet that included her cap and gown photo. “I’m 41, never been married, have no kids, and most days society refuses to celebrate people like me. It’s been a very rough year but this is a bright spot for many of us. It was all worth it.”

After going viral with the celebratory tweet, Goodwin shared her joy with the warm response and how she’s helped inspire other women.

“I didn’t expect that anyone outside of my family and friends would actually like it or tweet it,” she said. “I consider myself brave for going back to law school at 38 and not really going back with a plan of what I would do once I got out of law school. A lot of times people, especially women and Black women, are not celebrated while we’re doing things. We’re celebrated maybe when we’ve made it and are winning big cases as an attorney or doing other things like getting married or having kids.”

Education Inequity: The Role of Technology and Academic Service Providers

Education is one of the greatest equalizers that can lift individuals out of poverty and help provide access to an inclusive path on the road to create generational wealth. But access to vital pedagogical tools and adequate broadband is sparse at best.

The digital divide disproportionately impacts Black and brown students from grade school to higher learning. Moreover, prolonged school closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated education inequities in urban communities that cannot be ignored any longer.

Consequently, disenfranchised students have fallen further behind in the current remote learning environment, and the compounding residual effects will linger long after students return to school. In contrast, students’ learning in higher-income households accelerated, which only broadened the gaps in education and future earning potential.

Therefore, as Congress contemplates a bill to procure nationwide infrastructure investments, lawmakers must prioritize broadband expansion that achieves equitable digital access. Especially given the trends in academia toward the proliferation of distant learning options and the augmentation of virtual classrooms in America and abroad.

However, closing the education achievement gap is not solely the responsibility of the federal and state government. Corporations and other for-profit entities have a significant role in preparing students for their academic journey and careers — namely, the consortium of publishers of educational materials like Kaplan, McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and Wiley.

But how so?

As an adjunct assistant professor at New York University and an adjunct instructor at Hampton University, I have firsthand knowledge of disparities in college-level skillsets across various socioeconomic backgrounds at both academic institutions. Hence, closing the gap can be remedied, in part, by enhancing college-bound preparation from middle school onward.

Perhaps the first step by a consortium of educational service providers to ascertain new ways to invest in underserved communities would be establishing a coalition of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and a cohort of public school districts in various urban metropolis cities across America. The anecdotes, in-depth knowledge exchange, and statistical data from the respective group collaboration can provide insight into needed upgrades, the efficacy of new product development, and cultural enhancements to learning materials.

Additionally, partnering with intermediaries to make investments in scholarships in underrepresented communities coupled with affordable access to testing materials and educational books can make a significant, long-lasting, and measurable impact.

Suppose the aforementioned is not compelling enough for education service providers to think and do differently. Perhaps recent announcements by two well-renowned university systems are an eye-opener.

The University of California system announced that it would no longer consider standardized tests like the ACT and SAT scores in the college admissions evaluation process. Also, the City University of New York (CUNY) has suspended these standardized exams through 2023. And, its statewide counterpart, the State University of New York (SUNY), may do the same as other state-run university systems, and private academic institutions may follow suit.

But for now, at the grade school level, the Biden administration is committed to continuing standardized testing, which means parents, teachers, and schools will need support in helping students in their educational development.

Completing the 5G rollout and the impending expansion of internet access are opportunities to close the academic gap. In addition, it will enable stakeholders in education to reach disenfranchised populations in a low-cost and effective way using online tools than traditional hard copy resources.

As children, teenagers, and adult learners prepare to return to school this fall, now is the time for companies to align their social responsibility goals with building an inclusive future comprised of enriching students’ academic aptitude while also serving to narrow the income gap.

America Remembers George Floyd on The One-Year Anniversary of His Murder

Tuesday, May 25 marked one year since George Floyd lost his life lying under the knee of a police officer. His death came on the heels of the fatal police shooting of Breonna Taylor and the killing of Ahmaud Arbery by so-called good Samaritans, sparking worldwide protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Today, a plethora of organizations in the U.S. and around the world are paying homage to Floyd through a number of events and rallies.

The NAACP hosted a virtual day of action while honoring Floyd on the one-year anniversary of his murder. They asked supporters to take action by contacting their local senators and demanding they get the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act passed.

“To ensure this critical bill gets passed on or before the one-year mark of the murder of George Floyd, we’re targeting state senators who are on the fence or opposed to the bill to surpass the three-fifths rule or 60 votes, which will unanimously pass the bill in congress,” their website call to action read.

Minneapolis also held rallies near George Floyd square where shots reportedly rang out nearby, CNN reports.

  • Minneapolis and New York Holds Moment of Silence for 9 Minutes and 29 Seconds

Cities in Minneapolis and New York honored the passing of George Floyd with a moment of silence that lasted for the same amount of time Derek Chauvin kneeled on Floyd’s neck, CBS Minnesota reports.

“It’s been a troubling year, a long year,” Bridgett Floyd told a crowd at a rally, via AP News. “But we made it. They say with God all things are possible and I’m a true believer in that … The love is very outpouring today. The love is here. George is here.”

  • Germany Hosts Rally for George Floyd

Worldwide, countries like Germany joined in on commemorating Floyd’s passing by hosting a peaceful rally where supporters came together to speak out against racial and social injustice.

Civil Rights Attorney Kristen Clarke Confirmed To Lead Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division

Civil Rights Attorney Kristen Clarke Confirmed To Lead Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division

Reuters – A divided U.S. Senate on Tuesday voted to confirm Kristen Clarke to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, where she will oversee two high-profile investigations into possible patterns of police misconduct in Minneapolis and Louisville.

Clarke, a longtime civil rights attorney and Justice Department veteran, was confirmed in a vote of 51-48 on the one-year anniversary of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. Nearly all Republicans opposed her nomination.

She is the first woman, and the first Black woman, to be confirmed as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division.

Senator Susan Collins of Maine was the lone Republican to back her nomination.

“This is not the right nominee for a crucial post at a crucial time,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor earlier this week, and accused her of having a history of making statements that put her on “the far-left fringe of the political spectrum.”

Clarke was a trial attorney in the Justice Department’s voting rights section and worked in several other positions before taking a job with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

She previously served as the civil rights chief for the New York State Attorney General’s Office. Since January 2016, she has worked as president and executive director for the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Clarke “is an accomplished civil rights attorney who has earned the respect of all sides,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Tuesday, ahead of the vote.

Clarke came under fire from Republicans during her April confirmation hearing for everything from articles she wrote and events she attended while she was an undergraduate at Harvard University, to her social media posts and an opinion piece she wrote in June headlined: “I Prosecuted Police Killings. Defund the Police — But Be Strategic.”

Clarke told lawmakers she does not support defunding the police and said she did not select the headline for the op-ed.

She will start her job at a busy time for the department, which is facing a spike of hate crimes against Asian Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic, a wave of Republican state legislatures passing laws that critics say will make it harder to vote, and civil probes into whether police departments in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Louisville, Kentucky, use unreasonable force and discriminate against people of color and/or people with disabilities.
