Researchers Believe Social Distancing May Need To Continue Until 2022

Barring a vaccine, epidemiologists believe social distancing could be necessary until 2022 to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scientists at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health published the study Tuesday, according to Forbes.com. “Absent other interventions, a key metric for the success of social distancing is whether critical care capacities are exceeded,” the researchers wrote in the report. “To avoid this, prolonged or intermittent social distancing may be necessary into 2022.”

Researchers added it’s paramount to figure out if COVID-19 can be wiped out after this initial pandemic like the SARS outbreak. If it can’t, it’s likely the virus will re-emerge every winter like other, more common coronavirus strains.

The study also acknowledges the guidelines are likely to have “profoundly negative economic, social, and educational consequences.”

The authors say the point of the study is not to endorse their methods of beating COVID-19, but rather to spur innovative ideas and to expand the list of options to bring the pandemic under long-term control.,

The study did have some good news, saying once the number of positive cases has been reduced and testing ramps up, social distancing guidelines could be relaxed.

“New therapeutics, vaccines, or other interventions such as aggressive contact tracing and quarantine—impractical now in many places but more practical once case numbers have been reduced and testing scaled up—could alleviate the need for stringent social distancing to maintain control of the epidemic,” the study said.

The COVID-19 outbreak has effectively shut down the world. More than 150 countries have implemented quarantine restrictions. According to Johns Hopkins University, 2 million people have contracted COVID-19 worldwide, with 127,590 dying.

Scientists all over the world are currently racing to develop a vaccine. Microsoft CEO Bill Gates is essentially gambling $1 billion on seven vaccines to stop the virus.

Uncertainty Looms as Funding for PPP Business Loans Dwindles

Given the urgent need and huge demand for small businesses to obtain loans to help battle the novel coronavirus, funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) is diminishing fast.

More than 1.16 million applications have been approved exceeding $268 billion at over 4,700 lending institutions since PPP launched on April 3, the U.S. Small Business Administration reports. Those are the latest figures released as of April 14 by the SBA, which is helping to run the program.

The PPP keeps small business employees on payroll by offering critical capital. The $350 billion lending program for firms with up to 500 workers became law in late March as part of the $2 trillion coronavirus economic stimulus package.

A growing concern recently has been if some black small businesses and faith-based organizations can even access PPP before the funding runs out. With more than 75% of the funding committed, some observers believe the funding could run out in days.

And how much, when, and if more funding for PPP will come is unclear though federal government officials and Capitol Hill leaders have talked about supporting such a supplement.

Senate Democrats last week blocked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s efforts to provide another $250 billion to help restock the funding. At the same time, the GOP last week balked on a counter $500 billion plan by the Democrats, ABC News reported.

The Democrats’ fresh plan called for small businesses to get $250 billion of the money, with half intended for “community-based financial institutions that serve farmers, family, women, minority and veteran-owned small businesses and nonprofits in rural, tribal, suburban and urban communities across our country,” Courthouse News Service reported.

The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) and about 30 state banking associations last week sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Small Business Administrator Jovita Carranza essentially requesting to assure timely access to the PPP for roughly one-third of the community banking industry.

Critics have blasted some on the nation’s largest banks for not getting more aggressively involved with PPP during its launch in early April.

An uneven rollout, last-minute rule changes, and being forced to quickly adapt to the massive lending program have some small businesses and smaller banks disappointed with PPP. Some smaller firms have reportedly been left looking for lenders to accept applications given the hurdles. Others, including some black business owners, swear that have just been unsuccessful in trying to gain loans from lenders.

In addition, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. demands community banks keep a leverage ratio of over 9% when they have $10 billion or less in assets. That could mean that many smaller banks, including black-owned ones, perhaps may have less cash for lending in their communities.

Kenneth Kelly, chairman & CEO of Detroit-based First Independence Bank and board chair of the National Bankers Association (NBA), said another challenge for community banks is not having the technology of larger banks to process loans faster. A few businesses mentioned how they scored loans at SBA.gov.

Some smaller banks are supposedly processing PPP loans faster than their larger peers because they already have a lending relationship with smaller firms, or they are working extremely hard to get loans approved.

Kelly said his bank is participating in PPP. The bank is spreading the word about how it can help black small businesses and churches in the Motor City apply for loans. One of the biggest hits on his bank’s website is a link on COVID-19. It includes information on EIDL loans, a PPP information sheet for borrowers, required documents for submission, and other details.

Kelly was a panel member on a “National C.A.R.E.S Act Community Tele-Thon” on April 9. The teleconference included educating and preparing the Detroit black business and faith community about the loan opportunity. The panel included executives from the Detroit branch of the NAACP, Detroit Economic Growth Corp., and National Business League Inc. Among the event participants were businesses, sole proprietors and non-profits.

Nationally, Kelly estimated there are approximately 20 NBA banks taking part in PPP, accounting for most of the group’s membership. “We’re trying to engage at a very high level at the National Bankers Association.” Many are on the 2019 BE Banks list.

How to Secure A PPP Loan

So what should small businesses do to help them secure PPP loans as well as aid from the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program (EIDL)?

Kelly offered suggestions on how black small businesses and black churches  can get loans easier. Spend a little time to get educated on PPP, how it works, and understand the requirements to apply for the program. Communicate with local business constituents so that your understanding is equal to the understanding of peers in your business market applying for the loan.

He added small businesses should look to state and local programs that may be available to assist with funding. For instance, Kelly noted, the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. has $4 million in grants available to small businesses impacted by the coronavirus.

Help may also come from the SBA and its resource partners that are hosting several upcoming educational webinars for the small business community, said SBA spokesperson Carol Wilkerson. New COVID-19 live webinars for small business owners include:

On April 16 at 1 p.m Eastern/10 a.m. Pacific, Brian Pifer with the Small Business Majority will present “National Resources and Policy Updates for Small Businesses Impacted by COVID-19” about the new loan programs made available by the CARES Act, resources related to COVID-19 and policy recommendations to bolster small business owners right now. Register here.

On April 28 at 1 pm Eastern/10 a.m. Pacific, Amanda Brinkman hosts “Marketing Advice to Combat an Economic Downturn.”  The webinar will provide actionable marketing strategies to help clients keep their customers engaged.

FedEx Worker Sanitizing Package for a Child with an Autoimmune Disorder Warms the Nation’s Heart

FedEx Worker Sanitizing Package for a Child with an Autoimmune Disorder Warms the Nation’s Heart

Every day, essential workers go the extra mile to make sure that Americans are able to get what they need during the COVID-19 pandemic. From grocers to deliverymen and women.

Last week, FedEx worker Justin Bradshaw went above and beyond to make sure that a child living in a home that he was delivering to was safe by sanitizing a package after reading a sign posted by the family on the door.

On April 6, Carrie Blasi who is the mother of the child referred to in the note posted on the front door of the home sang Bradshaw’s praises after home surveillance cameras captured his random act of kindness. On Twitter, Blasi wrote, “We have a sign on our door for packages/mail as our 11 year old daughter is a type 1 diabetic [and] our federal express delivery guy wrote this on our box: ‘I sanitized your box once I’ve seen the note on your door.’”

Kindness Goes a Long Way

After her tweet went out, the heartwarming story of what the man had done went viral on social media. The video of the gentleman has since been uploaded to YouTube.

People magazine spoke with Blasi who shared that she has been able to connect with Bradshaw after a friend of his reached out to her on Facebook. They spoke over video chat.

“One of the FedEx delivery guy’s friends found me on Facebook, and we were able to connect with them via video conference,” Blasi told People. “He is such a good-natured man.”

During the Zoom video call, Bradshaw shared that his daughter is also at high-risk during the pandemic as she was born prematurely. In an interview with WPTV, Bradshaw said, “It is crazy the amount of measures we have to go through to stay safe,” Bradshaw said, “The first thing I thought of was Nova, because she was a micro-preemie. And she’s very high risk.”

As essential workers show up for America, people around the country are now being asked to show up for them, too. Many essential workers are risking their health, well-being, and lives every time they clock in.

In hopes of encouraging others to be kind and intentional, Blasi created the hashtag #BeLikeJustin.

Democratic Georgia State Rep. Vernon Jones Endorses Trump for Re-Election

It looks like Diamond and Silk have a friend in Georgia!

A Democratic politician from the Peach State has officially endorsed President Donald Trump for re-election for a second term, according to The Grio.

State Rep. Vernon Jones told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Trump was a transformational figure who has helped the black community. “It’s very simple to me. President Trump’s handling of the economy, his support for historically black colleges and his criminal justice initiatives drew me to endorse his campaign,” Jones said.

“This is not about switching parties. There are a lot of African Americans who clearly see and appreciate he’s doing something that’s never been done before,” Jones added. “When you look at the unemployment rates among black Americans before the pandemic, they were at historic lows. That’s just a fact.”

Democratic Party of Georgia Chairwoman Nikema Williams disagreed. She released a statement on the Democratic Party’s behalf.

“Vernon Jones is an embarrassment to the Democratic Party and does not stand for our values. Never has that been clearer than this moment, when he chose to stand with the racist president who has made an all-out assault on Black Americans, who has tried to rip away American health care, and who has failed our country in its greatest time of need during the most important election in our lifetimes. Vernon Jones doesn’t speak for Georgians, and neither does Donald Trump—which is why Georgians will send him home in November 2020.”

“A philosopher once said, ‘One courageous man in the crowd is a majority.’ I’ve got the courage to express my convictions,” Jones said. “I believe that Donald Trump is the best person to lead this country going forward.”

The endorsement is not a total shock. Jones previously voted twice for President George W. Bush and his voting record aligns more with the Republican party. He has co-sponsored bills that would crackdown on undocumented migrants.

Jones faces a primary battle with businesswoman Rhonda Taylor on May 19.

Stimulus Checks Might Be Delayed Because Trump Reportedly Wants His Name on Every Check

Stimulus Checks Might Be Delayed Because Trump Reportedly Wants His Name on Every Check

The stimulus checks Americans are expecting to receive may come a few days late because President Trump reportedly wants his name on every check.

According to Forbes, the Treasury Department finalized the decision Monday and Trump’s name will appear in the memo line of every check. In order to put the name on checks, engineers will have to make a computer programming change and then test the system in order to insert Trump’s name on the checks.

The process will take a few days and will likely cause a delay in the first batch of checks, two senior officials told the Washington Post. However, a Treasury Department official disputed the claim and said there would not be any delays.

“Economic Impact Payment checks are scheduled to go out on time and exactly as planned — there is absolutely no delay whatsoever,” a Treasury Department spokesperson said in a statement. “In fact, we expect the first checks to be in the mail early next week which is well in advance of when the first checks went out in 2008 and well in advance of initial estimates.”

A Treasury official confirmed that instead of Trump’s actual signature “President Donald J. Trump” will be printed on the checks.

However, some believe the move is just another sign of Trump’s grandstanding.

Chad Hooper, the national president of the IRS’ Professional Managers Association, told the Washington Post he was appalled by the move.

“In this time of need for additional resources, anything that takes our focus from getting those checks out the door and hampers the equitable, fair administration of the tax code is not something we can support,” he said.

Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, also criticized the president.

The checks are part of the $2 trillion coronavirus relief package. Direct cash payments of up to $1,200 for individuals, $2,400 for married couples, and an additional $500 for each child will be sent out to citizens across the country. The funds are badly needed as more than 16 million Americans are currently unemployed.

Miami Police Handcuff Black Doctor Who Tests Homeless for Coronavirus (Video)

Miami Police Handcuff Black Doctor Who Tests Homeless for Coronavirus (Video)

Racial profiling doesn’t take a day off, even during the coronavirus pandemic.

A black Miami doctor, who has been testing the homeless for COVID-19, was handcuffed outside his home by a police officer who then let him go without explanation, according to ABC News.

Dr. Armen Henderson, who has been battling the novel coronavirus pandemic in the hospital he works for and on the streets of Miami, was detained in front of his own residence by a Miami police sergeant as he was loading his van with supplies for the homeless.

The incident took place last Friday, three days after Miami-Dade Police Chief Jorge Colina announced that at least six of his officers had tested positive for the coronavirus and an additional 125 had been quarantined pending test results. In a video statement, Colina pleaded with the public to help protect his officers: “Please, stay inside, adhere to social distancing, wear a mask or a cloth face covering and be responsible. We’re here for you. Please do your part for us.”

Dr. Henderson, an internal medicine physician at the University of Miami Health System, said he is very concerned about the up-close encounter as the Miami-Dade police sergeant was not wearing a protective mask. The doctor told ABC News that the sergeant got “all up in my face.” Henderson feels that the sergeant detained him because he is black.

“He put me at risk,” Henderson said. “Now I feel like I should get tested, honestly. Most likely I will because he definitely was spitting in my face. I could feel it while he was yelling at me.”

“He just said, ‘Are you littering over here? Do you live here? Do you work here?’ And I was like, ‘Yes, I live here. This is where we put our bulky trash and the city comes to pick it up every week at this same place,'” Henderson said.

Colina said he has ordered an investigation of the incident.

ESPN Asks Top Commentators to Take a 15% Pay Cut Due to the Coronavirus

ESPN Asks Top Commentators to Take a 15% Pay Cut Due to the Coronavirus

The results of sports being at a standstill has reverberated across many businesses, especially at television sports networks. ESPN has asked its highest-paid sports commentators to take a 15% reduction in salary over the next three months to help cope with the losses attributed to the coronavirus pandemic, according to CNN.

“We are asking about 100 of our commentators to join with our executives and take a temporary salary reduction,” ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said in a statement. “These are challenging times and we are all in this together.”

ESPN executives are taking a 20%-30% salary reductions as part of cost-cutting measures instituted throughout Walt Disney Corp. The cuts that are being applied amounted to 30% for executive vice presidents, 25% for senior vice presidents, and 20% for vice presidents.

The pay cuts, which are voluntary, are designed to help deter additional furloughs that would directly affect lower-paid network employees who might be more financially vulnerable. The network has already furloughed employees who work on live events.

According to the New York Post, commentators Stephen A. Smith, Scott Van Pelt, and Dick Vitale are among those who have already agreed to the salary reduction. Endeavor president Mark Shapiro, whose sports agency represents Smith and other ESPN talent, said he understands the network’s position.

“Unprecedented times call for unprecedented sacrifices and like our global workforce has demonstrated, the sports talent we represent intellectually understands that and are embracing the request,” Shapiro told the Post.

The 15% voluntary pay reductions are not expected to affect ESPN’s lower-paid talent, who have salaries in the low six figures.

With the NBA suspending its current season, the National College Athletes Association canceling the men and women’s college basketball tournament, and Major League Baseball delaying Opening Day, ESPN has been scrambling to fill the gaps in sports programming left due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Don Lemon Calls Out Donald Trump After Losing a Close Friend to COVID-19

Don Lemon Calls Out Donald Trump After Losing a Close Friend to COVID-19

On Monday, Don Lemon shared a heartfelt message where he revealed that he lost his close friend, Robby Browne, due to complications with COVID-19. He also called out Donald Trump for claiming that he has “total authority” to dictate when states reopen during a press briefing.

The outcomes due to the spread of the coronavirus have made it clear that no single person has control as it relates to the crisis. Not the healthcare providers, banks, scientists, or those who practice social distancing. Not even the president. For those reasons, Lemon called out Trump on CNN saying, “I lost a very good friend this weekend. I wanted to hear from the president how he is going to stop that from happening. “Instead, I got a campaign video. What do I need a campaign video for?”

He went on to say, “I want to know how you’re going to stop my loved ones from dying. I don’t need a campaign video, Mr. President. How are you going to keep friends and loved ones from dying? It is crystal clear from what happened today what the president’s top priority is, defending himself rather than focusing on the health and well-being of the American people.”

In a tweet, Lemon paid tribute to his friend:

Don Lemon Calls out Trump

Lemon isn’t the only person calling out Trump. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo weighed in on Trump’s statement during an appearance on CNN and reminded people about the Constitution—and that Trump is not above it.

“We don’t have King Donald Trump, we have President Donald Trump. The states created the federal government, not the other way around. And, that is explicit. Certain responsibilities are state responsibilities. Health, welfare, quarantine — those are state responsibilities. So, the president should not even think of going there.”

Like Lemon and Cuomo, many Americans are eager for Trump to work with those in leadership as they seek to flatten the curve.
