LSU’s Angel Reese Tries To Calm Kim Mulkey After Coach Was Ejected From Game
"Me and coach Mulkey have similar personalities in we like to win no matter the score"
In a blowout victory for the Louisiana State University women’s basketball team over the weekend, a rare incident saw Angel Reese trying to calm down her coach after the coach was ejected from the basketball game.
According to The Daily Advertiser, in the 45-point blowout victory for the LSU Tigers, with a few minutes left in the game, Tigers head coach Kim Mulkey had to be restrained after getting heated about a call against junior forward Aneesah Morrow. Mulkey can be seen on the court yelling at the official, Timothy Green, as LSU’s star player, Angel Reese, is viewed trying to calm her coach down. Mulkey was ejected, and Reese approached her coach and said some things, even trying to grab her to get her to leave the court after being thrown out of the game.
Although there were literally minutes left in the game and the game had already been decided against the Northwestern State Demons, Mulkey reacted as if the game was tied; the ball was taken away from her team, and an uncalled foul took place that may have tied the game. The intensity the coach displayed reminds us of Reese’s court play.
After the game, during the press conference, Mulkey defended herself for disputing the call but also stated that by her reaction, the official made the right call.
“He did the right thing; I’m not questioning that. In fact, I think I helped him. I said, ‘I’m not leaving you, you better toss me,’ or something like that,” Mulkey stated. “It was like he had no choice. But I appreciate officials that know what you’re trying to do out there. I don’t appreciate bad calls but it’s part of coaching.”
Reese also spoke about going to try to calm down Mulkey during the heat of the action.
“Me and coach Mulkey have similar personalities in we like to win no matter the score,” Reese said. “Of course, she’s going to fight for us, and we all fight for her. That moment was fun, and we knew she had our back, and we had her back.”
The Tigers won the game, 81-36, making it the team’s 11th straight victory.
Entrepreneurs, 4 Tips To Help You Network Your Way Through The Holidays
Public relations expert Whitney Stringer shares four tips to help entrepreneurs expand their network during the holiday season.
Originally Published Dec. 16, 2017
The holidays are traditionally a time for giving, for family, for reflection. But for entrepreneurs, the holidays can also be an opportune time to build your network.
Whitney Stringer, founder of boutique lifestyle public relations firm Whitney Stringer PR, helps her clients elevate their business development and networking skills. She shares her advice for small business owners who want to make the season more social:
1. Start by sending a card
“Holiday cards are a great way to touch base with your extended network,” Stringer says. “You can do Christmas cards, general holiday day cards, or—my favorite—New Year’s cards! You can do them digitally or send hard copy cards, but chances are the hard copy version will make a deeper impression.”
Stringer reminds entrepreneurs to get their list together early. And to make sure to have some extra cards available for contacts you may have forgotten or in case you meet someone new.
2. Have a holiday party networking plan
Do you have a calendar full of client holiday parties, or even a stack of invites to celebrations from your personal network? The very social nature of the holidays makes them a great time for making new connections.
Remember, it’s the holidays, so don’t be pushy with your business cards, advises Stringer. But do be strategic.
“If you know someone you want to meet is going to be there and you have a mutual contact, ask for an introduction ahead of time,” she suggests. Also, “bring along a guest that can speak to your accomplishments.”
3. Take advantage of the downtime
The slower pace of work during the holidays is an ideal time to schedule catch ups.
“While many people may be traveling, that doesn’t apply to everyone. Since many offices are closed or working on modified schedules, use that time to catch up with former colleagues, business neighbors, college mates, etc. that you just didn’t get around to seeing over the year,” Stringer says.
If you can’t get face time, you can still connect digitally. “Social media is a great tool to connect with people, whether it’s someone you just met at a holiday party or a former association you want to get reacquainted with. See if they’ve shared any articles recently on LinkedIn, or check out their YouTube channel.”
If you’re usually too busy to stop and comment on postings, make the time to do so during the holidays while your workload is lighter, Stringer advises, adding, “They’ll remember that when you reach out in the new year!”
4. Build your network by shopping locally
“This one is especially important for small business owners,” Stringer says. “If you want people to support your small business, when it’s time to do your holiday shopping, be sure to shop local as well.”
This not only gives you the chance to support other entrepreneurs, and to add some good karma credits to your business. But by chatting up the team when you pop in your local boutiques, you might just walk away with a new customer or two. It’s another point of contact, Stringer says, that shouldn’t be overlooked.
“Chances are you might not have gotten that one-on-one opportunity at the big box store or shopping online.”
Metro Boomin Receives St. Louis’ Key To The City, Acknowledges Single Mothers In Honor Of Late Mother
"This is only the beginning of all the great things that I want to do for the city to help turn things around one household at a time"
Last week, St. Louis honored music producer Leland Wayne, better known as Metro Boomin, by giving him the key to the city. St. Louis also declared Dec. 14 “Leland ‘Metro Boomin Wayne Day” and “Leslie Joanne Single Mothers and Caregivers Appreciation Day” in honor of the producer’s late mother. The honor was given to him by St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones.
According to St. Louis Public Radio, Jones acknowledged the talent of the producer while bestowing him with the honor. “Metro has a distinct ear for music composition, creating melodic, yet percussive beats, that you can’t help but dance to. It’s a bop, ya’ll. It’s a bop!”
That same day, the seventh annual “Single Moms Are Superheroes” holiday eventwas relaunched as the Leslie Joanne Soirée, named after Metro’s mother. The event was a gala for 250 single mothers and included a performance by R&B singer and actress Brandy.
Metro said it was the start of helping the city “turn things around.”
“This is only the beginning of all the great things that I want to do for the city to help turn things around one household at a time. As far as today, the day is officially Leslie Joanne Day after my mother — and not after myself.”
Metro accepted the accolades and the key with his brothers and sisters — 27-year-old Leah, 25-year-old Landon, 13-year-old Lauren, and 9-year-old Logan — by his side.
The Leslie Joanne Soirée was created in conjunction with Rung for Women, an organization dedicated to assisting women seeking independence for themselves via career coaching, skills training, and coordinated resources. There is no cost to the women who participate in the program.
Last year, Metro collaborated with The Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation to launch the “Single Moms Are The Real Superheroes” campaign. The initiative was created to assist women who are met with struggles they may face as solo parents.
Combat Porch Piracy This Holiday Shopping Season With These 11 Steps
With the holiday shopping season unfolding, here are 11 steps consumers should take to prevent porch pirates from stealing packages
Originally Published Nov. 7, 2019
With the holiday shopping season unfolding soon, now is the time consumers should consider taking steps to prevent thieves from stealing packages or gifts off porches.
That activity tends to surge with the run-up to Christmas, law enforcement officials say. As a growing number of people buy packages online via websites like Amazon and have gifts sent to homes of family and friends, so-called “porch piracy” behavior rises.
Yet, there are many steps consumers can apply to help prevent porch poachers from taking the cheer out of their holiday shopping season:
Thick about installing security devices—maybe surveillance cameras that can be seen by would-be thieves but are untouchable—to deter package theft.
Get a smart lock. Have a courier or delivery person enter a unique code that unlocks the front door when the package is delivered. Then, they can place the package inside, close the door, and re-lock it. The passcode expires and your packages are safe and secure.
See if you can have shipments come directly to you. Perhaps your employer will allow packages to be shipped to you at work.
Check to see if neighbors or friends home during the day might be open to collecting your packages.
Set up and schedule packages when you are at home. These apps also allow you to delay or redirect packages: FedEx Delivery Manager, UPS My Choice, and USPS Hold Mail.
Examine security over convenience. Have packages kept at a delivery service store or post office where you can pick them up.
Ask those you’re sending packages to for details on the safest way for them to receive them.
Leave a note to have the package left where it cannot be seen. Remember, porch pirates look for packages that are easy to see and take.
Look into self-service pick-up lockers. Many major shipping companies provide this service. FedEx Ship & Get, UPS Access Point, and Amazon Locker are secure pick-up options.
Season 3 Of ‘BMF’ To Feature Lil Baby, Saweetie, And Cynthia Bailey
The three new guest stars will join previously announced Ne-Yo and 2 Chainz for the latest season.
Starz crime-drama series BMF will begin its eagerly awaited third season with a star-studded lineup of new guest stars, including rapper and singers Lil Baby, Saweetie, and Cynthia Bailey.
The trio joins previously confirmed guest stars Ne-Yo and 2 Chainz.
The show dropped new cast photos on Instagram on Dec. 14 with the caption, “Waddup Doe, we got new faces joining the crew. Y’all ready for #BMF Season 3?”
Baby is breaking onto the acting scene as Payne, an enforcing foot soldier out of Atlanta. Saweetie plays a former athlete named Keeya trying to make it on the streets of St. Louis. Lastly, Bailey will step on screen as Gloria, the ex-wife of Detective Bryant, who’s trying to deal with their son’s ongoing legal battles.
BMF is executive produced by 50 Cent and is set to return for season 3 on March 1. The show has previously followed the true story of the Flenory brothers, Demetrius “Big Meech” and Terry “Southwest T,” the founders of the Black Mafia Family. “Big Meech” is played by his son, Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr.
Season 3 will be set in the 1990s and follow Big Meech’s expansion of his empire throughout Atlanta while his brother Terry continues the operation in Detroit.
“It’s going to give you entertainment and energy,” 50 Cent previously told CNN. “If those lifestyle choices weren’t there, it would still be a family drama.”
Lil Meech told the outlet, “I already knew a lot about my dad and my uncle that my father used to tell me, and I used to see growing up. But this was a whole different experience because now I had to learn about them in their childhood, when they grew up, [and] what choices they made to become who they are today.”
50 Cent produces BMF through G-Unit Film and Television alongside Starz’s Lionsgate Television.
Spike Lee’s Golden Jordan 3s Up for Auction After Ending up in Homeless Shelter
The stylish gold sneakers have been put up for auction and will likely go for nearly $20,000.
Director Spike Lee’s all-gold Air Jordans have been put up for auction in Oregon after they were anonymously donated to a shelter. Available until Monday, Dec 18, the Jordans could possibly go for $20,000.
The gold Nike shoes were found in the donation pile at the Portland Rescue Mission earlier this year. After they were dropped into the chute, a man who was formerly homeless but is now a part of the Rescue Mission’s long-term shelter program found them while they sorting through the donated materials. He brought them to the attention of the shelter staff since he recognized the iconic sneakers.
According to Apple News, the Air Jordan 3s were a size 12 1/2, and the gold Nikes were one of several custom pairs that were made for Malcolm X filmmaker Spike Lee. Legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield created them for Lee in 2019 who wore them when accepting his Oscar for writing BlacKkKlansmen‘s screenplay on Feb. 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The Portland Rescue Mission said that the donated pair of sneakers didn’t seem like Lee’s personal pair but that he had a few made to give out to his friends.
Hatfield took a trip to the shelter and authenticated the gold Jordans as real. He signed a box for the shoes to be auctioned off and even donated more Nike apparel and merchandise.
“I’m thrilled the shoes ended up here. It’s a happy ending to a really great project,” Hatfield said.
The shoes are currently on auction and listed to bid on at Sotheby’s Auction house until Dec. 18. Sotheby’s has agreed to waive the auction house fee and will donate all proceeds to the shelter to aid in its mission to help people facing homelessness, substance abuse, and hunger.
The Grammy nominated rapper released “Pink Friday 2” on her 41st birthday, Dec. 8 and within one week, the album shot up the Billboard 200 with 228,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S., Billboard reports. Nicki Minaj has now made history as the female rapper with the most No. 1s.
She also garnered the largest week for a rap album by a woman in the 2020s decade, and the biggest for an R&B/hip-hop album by a woman in 2023. The album also sold 25,000 copies on vinyl, making it the largest week for a female rap album since Luminate started tracking sales in 1991.
Her chart-topping debut includes 92,000 pure sales with 129,000 streaming equivalent album units, according to Forbes. “Pink Friday 2” received nearly 170 million plays on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
The “Big Difference” rapper was already dominating the Billboard Hot 100 with tracks from the new album including “Super Freaky Girl” which reached No. 1 in 2022 and her 2023 singles “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” which reached No. 13 and “Last Time I Saw You” which reached No. 23.
While “Pink Friday 2” is Nicki’s fourth full-studio album and third No. 1, it’s her seventh Top 10 album including 2015’s “The Pinkprint” which charted at No. 2, 2018’s “Queen” (No. 2), 2021’s “Beam Me Up Scotty” (No. 2), and 2022’s “Queen Radio: Volume 1.”
Nicki celebrated the good news by announcing her first week sales and thanking her fan club.
Black Businesses Can Now Pursue $10,000 Grant To Help Them Grow From Verizon
Growth-focused small businesses—including Black-owned firms—can pursue a $10,000 grant from wireless giant Verizon.
The Verizon Small Business Digital Ready is partnering with Next Street and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) on the effort. Verizon reports its online small business platform is geared to provide under-resourced small businesses with the needed tools to help them grow and flourish in today’s digital economy.
The Verizon-funded grant program means that 50 small businesses will receive a $10,000 grant totaling $500,000. However, applicants should act soon as the deadline for the current grant period is now through Dec. 20, 2023. Apply here by clicking on register. The winners will be announced early next year.
Further, small businesses who register on the platform could gain other backing, including personalized access to over 40 online courses, mentorship opportunities with industry experts, and one-on-one coaching, all for free.
“Since Verizon Small Business Digital Ready launched in 2021, we have been able to support over 200,000 small business owners nationwide,” said Verizon’s Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer Rose Stuckey Kirk. “We are proud to tap into our tools and resources—as well as our network of experts—to help small businesses succeed and, ultimately, help benefit their local communities.”
LISC, one of the nation’s largest community development nonprofits, will distribute the grants to the winners. It will also promote the grant program to the nonprofit’s community partners and small business network.
The initiative is tied to Verizon’s goal to support 1 million small businesses by 2030 and is aligned with its responsible business plan, Citizen Verizon. Some 99% of respondents agree that courses from Verizon’s online small business platform helped their business, based on a survey of current users earlier this year.
For Black entrepreneur Diedre Mathis, the Verizon funding could be helpful. She opened Wanderstay Houston Hostel in Texas in 2018. She recently expanded by opening a second location, Wanderstay Boutique Hotel. Verizon’s Small Business Digital Ready Program is among her resources to help her gain skills as a business owner.
Mathis’s vision is to hire more staff and continue to support her current staff with training opportunities. She wants to boost her investment in marketing on social media to spread the word about both of her Wanderstay properties. That makes the $10,000 Verizon grant truly timely for Mathis.
Insufficient or expired capital is among the largest operating obstacles for budding and mature small business owners. A recent report showed that 76% of Black entrepreneurs disclosed that access to capital was a challenge. Based on those who have never earned money for their business, about 80% stated they either could not find the right support or could not pay for services connecting them to the capital.
The uplifting news is the Verizon platform offers several courses that help small business owners acquire funding. Some include choosing the best SBA loan, navigating online loans, and finding the right financing for your business.

Master The Art Of Salary Negotiation: 4 Tips To Secure Your Financial Future
Black people are more likely to receive lower salaries in hiring negotiations when racially biased evaluators believe they have negotiated too much, a recent study found.
Whether you’re establishing your career, feeling stagnant, or advancing onto bigger and better skills, there is often an opportunity to seize or tank salary negotiation. Yet, for Black job candidates and workers, research supports that there are numerous factors stacked against us for negotiating what we’re worth.
Black people are more likely to receive lower salaries in hiring negotiations when racially biased evaluators believe they have negotiated too much, a recent study found. The risk of bargaining while Black coupled with the staggering pay gap between Black men and women sheds light on the differences in how salary negotiations unfold.
What common fears do candidates have about salary negotiation?
Fears of rejection.
Fears of being stereotyped based on gendered racial identity.
Fears about not having enough experience.
Fears surrounding economic uncertainty.
If you’re gearing up for the next line of interviews, there’s no need to fret. A prepared mind is just as essential as planning. Here are four salary negotiation tips that can help you prepare for the upcoming interview or performance review and leave with confidence.
1. LEARN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF NEGOTIATION
Salary negotiations are never predictable. So, it’s imperative to understand the basics of negotiation 101. From setting expectations and anchoring high to maintaining appropriate body language, the mental psychology of negotiation can be complex.
“The goal is to learn how to get to a place where you are happy with the negotiation outcome, and your partner is also happy with the outcome and wants to negotiate with you further in the future. This is an invaluable skill in the dynamic business environment, in which reputation builds very quickly and is very important to maintain,” according to Rellie Derfler-Rozin, associate professor of management and organization at University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.
2. BE CONFIDENT IN YOUR OWN FINANCIAL HOUSE
There is power in walking away from a negotiation when your financial house is a priority. Many people are operating out of fear because the economy is seemingly vulnerable. However, according to Forbes, a path towards being debt-free gives you the confidence to seize better opportunities. Don’t settle for less when you can make a change now. Open a high-yield savings account with at least three months of expenses, be responsible for consistent budgeting, pay down high-interest credit cards or debt, and file your taxes on time and as close to owning zero dollars to the IRS.
3. RESEARCH ECONOMIC TRENDS
Over the past several months, the growth of advertised wages for new hires is slowing, according to a report from job-posting service ZipRecruiter. Companies are now posting lower pay ranges. Recent PYMNTS Intelligence shows that 72% of employed consumers say their wages have barely kept pace with inflation or have simply not kept up. But don’t let the face of uncertainty hinder you from asking for what you deserve in the position you’re applying for. Research today’s economic trends to give you a clearer approach to negotiation.
4. UPDATE YOUR BRAG BOOK
“Make sure you have your brag book so you can organize all your accomplishments as you prepare for interviews and annual reviews,” Niani Tolbert, founder and CEO of HIREBLACK said during a panel at the BLACK ENTERPRISE Women of Power Tech. If you’ve exceeded your past employer’s expectations or achieved a major project goal, do not hesitate to have fun jotting these down in a form you can refer to during interviews or performance reviews.
To reduce the insidious impact of racial and gender negotiation biases and fear-based salary negotiation, researchers call on broader organizational and societal changes. Preparedness is an advantage for those looking to bring prowess to a salary negotiation.
