Reports of Pelé in Palliative Care are False, Soccer Legend’s Family Says

Reports of international soccer legend Pelé in palliative care for colon cancer are off the mark, his family says.

The Independent reported the condition of the Brazilian soccer great, who was placed in the hospital last week to re-evaluate his treatment for colon cancer, is not as grave as previously reported.

Doctors who are treating the 82-year-old have put out a statement that was posted to his Instagram account reassuring fans that he is “still undergoing treatment and the state of health remains stable.”

Pelé is being treated at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo.

The announcement stated (translated from Portuguese): “Edson Arantes do Nascimento was admitted to the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein last Tuesday for a reassessment of chemotherapy therapy of the colon tumour, identified in September 2021. He is still undergoing treatment and the state of health remains stable. He has also had a good response to respiratory infection care, with no worsening of the condition in the last 24 hours.”

Pelé also released a statement pertaining to his health status.

“My friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive. I’m strong, with a lot of hope and I follow my treatment as usual. I want to thank the entire medical and nursing team for all the care I have received.

“I have a lot of faith in God and every message of love I receive from you all over the world keeps me full of energy. And watch Brazil in the World Cup too!

“Thank you so much for everything.

The still-popular retired soccer player had surgery last year in September to remove a tumor. In an updated report from The Independent earlier today, Kely, one of Pele’s daughters, said that he had COVID-19 about three weeks ago, which led to a respiratory infection.

“He is sick, he is old, but at the moment he is being treated for a respiratory infection and when he gets better he will be back home,” Kely said. “He is not saying goodbye in a hospital right now.”

After Deion Sanders’ HBCU Coaching Stint, Lifestyle Influencer MsHBCU Calls For Continued HBCU Support

As a young publicist, Brandy Star Merriweather (socially known as MsHBCU) is always looking to support multicultural efforts that align with helping her peers at HBCUs level opportunity within their careers.

General Motors (GM) is doing just that through their 10-week immersive summer internship and talent acquisition diversity pipeline programs. As GM aspires to be the most inclusive company in the world, their support for the HBCU community continues as they are the exclusive sponsor for the largest and most popular HBCU athletic conference–SWAC.

“Working with GM to amplify the visibility of their efforts toward the electric future as they put my peers onto more opportunities is so stirring. With GM we have the educational support for EV adoption within our local communities. I see how they are authentically spreading awareness and familiarity of the General Motors vehicles brands, mission, and EV adoption education. I stan—and look forward to enjoying the football game even more knowing there’s so much more GM has planned,” says MsHBCU.

From Home Depot’s ‘Retool Your School’, to General Motor’s ‘Discover The Unexpected’, Brandy Merriweather believes that companies who provide support for HBCUs are making mutually beneficial investments into the maximized value of their brand. It’s not just the support but the consistency and internal inclusion which will only continue building the future. As an entrepreneur Brandy is continuing her career by advocating for HBCUs, content creators, and GenZ. She is trailblazing change within the creator community but continuously creating solutions. Her passion for the future matches GM’s.

Brandy was able to experience the SWAC Championship and witnessed GM’s on-site activation featuring the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 and 2022 GMC Yukon AT4. In addition to showing up at the tailgate, they presented three checks totaling over $130,000, and announced they are giving both of the school’s coaches a GM vehicle and a HBCU Mother $50,000 towards a new GM vehicle.

“This type of support should not change. What Deion Sanders has done for the HBCU community the last three years  is commendable,” says MsHBCU.

“Him stepping away as JSU’s coach gives us the unique opportunity to continue to build authentic relationships and visibility. If the mission is to focus on the players, the HBCU community, and hope for impact–then the priority of efforts should continue. It is up to the team, city, media, sponsors, and more to continue their inclusion efforts and priority toward HBCUs” says MsHBCU.

Angela Yee Makes Exit From ‘The Breakfast Club’ Gearing Up for Debut of ‘Way Up with Angela Yee’

After 12 years and many great times, The Breakfast Club will be missing perhaps the most joyous part of the team as Angela Yee departs the program to be featured on her own show — on the same station.

Earlier this year, when Yee tweeted out this message, “The breakfast club as you know it is officially over,” it caused shockwaves because it wasn’t announced that she would be departing the morning show to lead her own.

Speculation swirled that the radio program itself was over. But, she clarified her message by stating that she will have a new midday show titled, Way Up with Angela Yee.

Now, the time has come for the young radio veteran to step into her own.

According to The Huffington Post, Yee’s last day on the team at Power 105.1 was Friday, Dec. 2, and a celebration ensued as she bid farewell after sitting down with Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy for the entirety of the syndicated radio show, The Breakfast Club for 12 years.

DJ Envy: “I’m gonna miss my sister.”

Yee’s show, Way Up with Angela Yee, is slated to start next year during the midday slot on the same station.

The talented personality had an exclusive interview with Variety and briefed the media outlet about the start of The Breakfast Club.

“When I first was coming over to iHeart it was Clear Channel at the time, me and Charlamagne and Envy all knew each other. Envy actually worked with me at Sirius and Charlamagne used to be on the ‘Wendy’ show, they both had been on my show before. It’s always a scary thing to leave something that is comfortable and certain for something unknown, especially when so many people are telling you that it’s not a good idea. Before I went there, I actually was considering moving to Philly or Atlanta to work in radio, but New York was the No. 1 market.”

As she embarks on the next chapter of her life, she does admit that waking up later will be a relief after so many years.

“I cannot wait to sleep until like 7 a.m. That’s going to be a blessing — although traffic is going to be a nightmare. For the past 18 years, I’ve been doing morning radio so it’s going to be such a relief to sleep a little later. That’s something I’m definitely not used to and I’m very excited for that. It’s going to be a life changer. Can I just start with that?”

No Surprise Here: Sale of Parler to Ye Won’t Happen

No Surprise Here: Sale of Parler to Ye Won’t Happen

The business dealings of Ye are continuing to crumble as he persists in making media appearances.

Parler, the right-wing conservative social media platform that took off after Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, announced that it will no longer sell the company to the rapper formerly known as Kanye West.

The company, which is run by the husband of Ye’s friend, conservative pundit Candace Owens, released a statement following Ye’s appearance on right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones‘ platform, Infowars. During the interview, Ye stated his admiration for Adolf Hitler several times, bringing more heat to the music producer.

Although the announcement was made after Ye’s appearance, Parler says it reached its decision last month.

“In response to numerous media inquiries, Parlement Technologies would like to confirm that the company has mutually agreed with Ye to terminate the intent of sale of Parler. This decision was made in the interest of both parties in mid-November.

“Parler will continue to pursue future opportunities for growth and the evolution of the platform for our vibrant community.”

Last month, BLACK ENTERPRISE reported that Ye had such a fascination with Hitler that he had planned to name an album after the late Nazi leader.

A business associate of Ye expressed to CNN two months ago that “the artist created a hostile work environment, in part, through his ‘obsession’ with Hitler.”

“He would praise Hitler by saying how incredible it was that he was able to accumulate so much power and would talk about all the great things he and the Nazi Party achieved for the German people,” according to the associate.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Discusses Invest South/West Inititative To Bring Investment To City’s Black, Latinx Neighborhoods

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Discusses Invest South/West Inititative To Bring Investment To City’s Black, Latinx Neighborhoods

In 2019, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced the Invest South/West Initiative; a plan meant to spur development and investment in 10 neighborhoods on the Windy City’s South and West sides.

This month, the mayor and her staff are celebrating the third anniversary of the initiative while at the same time acknowledging there’s a lot of work left to be done.

“I came into office recognizing that there were huge disparities in investment in majority Black and Latino areas all over our city. Many of these areas have seen no investment in decades, and I knew that if we were going to, frankly, heal our city, move our city forward, expand our tax base and our populations, then that disinvestment absolutely had to be addressed,” Lightfoot told BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“People talk a lot about public safety, but if you look at the root causes of crime, a lot of it arises from generational poverty, so creating a set of vibrant communities where young Black boys, in particular, could see themselves in the future of their neighborhood or city that wasn’t preordained to be part of a gang, to be part of illegal activity that was also critically important, so Invest South/West is exactly what it says if you know our city the South and West sides are majority Black and Latinx and the idea was initially to take 750 million city dollars and invest it in these neighborhoods.”

That initial $750 million investment has turned into $2.2 billion, almost evenly divided between city dollar and private-sector philanthropic dollars to bring in new businesses and support small businesses, including pharmacies and supermarkets, and beautify these communities. In addition to businesses, the Invest South/West initiative is restoring historic buildings and fostering equity and resilience through affordable housing, wider streets, green spaces for concerts and public events, and so much more.

“We took a very data-driven approach to show the business community that it’s in its best interest to invest in these communities and said, in essence “you’re leaving dollars on the table,’” Lightfoot said.

“These are customers who want to purchase goods and services and who do but not in their neighborhoods because the amenities are not there.”

Invest South/West project includes a proposed redevelopment of 0.6 acres of space in the Bronzeville section of Chicago into a six-story building containing 12,000 square feet of commercial space and 25 mixed-income residential units.

Earlier this summer, construction began on two developments in the Auburn Gresham section, one part that will contain 28 affordable residences and 5,200 square feet of commercial space to be occupied by West African food purveyor AYO Foods.

The other site, at 757 W. 79th St., will include 30 affordable apartments and 3,300 square feet of commercial space occupied by the KLEO Community Center and The Park Supper Club. During construction, anticipated to last 18 months, both sites will feature art by Chicago muralist Rahmaan Statik.

Other communities on the South and West sides of Chicago that are part of the initiative include Austin, where a redevelopment plan is set for the former Laramie Bank building, and Humboldt Park, where a $53.9 million proposal will rehabilitate the landmark Pioneer Bank building with an entrepreneurial incubator space, Latino cultural center, and office space for the lead architect, JGMA.

To ensure that the 10 communities received the things they needed to beautify, improve, and support the neighborhoods, the city used the same data-driven approach to talk to members of each community.

Mayor Lightfoot and the Invest South/West Initiative also had to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, which hit the country and the world less than a year into the project and threatened it. Lightfoot said during that time, communication was paramount to continue the project, and when project leaders could meet in person with masks, they got right back to work.

Now the project is looking to the future to continue the development, especially in what is becoming troubling economic times, something Lightfoot said the Windy City is prepared for.

“The future of the project is multi-tiered,” Lightfoot told Black Enterprise. “We got to keep pushing forward on the vertical construction that we started, you know as well as I know that construction costs have risen about 10% on many projects, so we’re working with the developers to address those increases into the project budget and I think we’re in good shape. We’re also doing what we call infill development, the streetscape work, bike racks, sidewalks, street signs, the affordable housing, and the green spaces that work continues, and we’re going to continue delivering on that.”

Black-Owned ‘Culturs Lifestyle Network’ Aims To Bring The Beauty Of Global Culture To Your Door

Black-Owned ‘Culturs Lifestyle Network’ Aims To Bring The Beauty Of Global Culture To Your Door

The Culturs global multicultural lifestyle network activates 21st-century diversity by creating media, products and experiences that embrace hidden diversity.

A certified black-owned business with a social mission, Culturs focuses on “in-between” cultural populations, including multi-ethnic, multicultural, mixed-race and geographically mobile (like immigrants, refugees and Third Culture Kids) with a focus on people of color – because everyone should feel like they matter.

Culturs founder Doni Aldine and her team members around the globe each fit many of these in-between identities. They understand what it’s like to constantly feel out-of-place. “The beauty of growing up in so many different spaces is that one develops a breadth of understanding for many other people, cultures and ways of thinking,” she said.

“Often, however, the same understanding isn’t afforded to the culturally fluid individual.”

In this chasm, the idea for Culturs was born – a place where people can come together, create community, feel understood. Its vision is to enhance community and foster human connection for those with liminal, or “in-between” identities. A quarterly membership now can bring all of this to subscribers’ doors, so they can feel their community, even if it is not near, according to a press release.

Culturs media offers stories, research and advice from this culturally fluid point of view. Its print magazine, produced four to six times each year, is anchored by a website that pumps out cross-cultural content each weekday, includes the podcast “[cultural] Destinations with Doni,” and videos on XOTV.me. Products include stationery items like journals Hidden Diversity greeting cards, from a uniquely cross-cultural point of view, and African American Princess Affirmation Cards; CultursCELEBRATIONS! Award-winning cultural entertaining kits to throw an authentic culturally-themed dinner party for up to 10 people, and handcrafted good-for-you globally focused bath and body products, among others. Experiences include discounts for culturally immersive global trips, cross-cultural educational classes, and cultural consulting and speaking engagements for organizations and individuals from Culturs’ diversity experts.

“These media, products and experiences are curated and delivered quarterly to remind people who they are, where they come from and that they’re not alone,” said Aldine.

“Often the world tries to tell you who you are, but you know better.”

“Our goal is to provide the resources to remind you of that knowledge, so people can feel confident in their culturally “in-between” identities.”

Culturs quarterly subscription memberships cost $24.99 to $59.99 each month at CutursMag.com/Shop.

Gift certificates are available just in time for the holiday season.
