Stay Ready: Grassroots Organizations In Georgia Are Keeping Black Voters Ready For Senate Runoff

Grassroots organizations in Georgia are working to keep Black and Democratic voters excited about the Senate runoff between Sen. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker.

NBC News reports voting groups and advocates supporting Warnock in Georgia are keeping Black voters excited to increase the Democrats’ majority in the Senate. If Walker retains his seat, it could have a significant impact, including allowing the party to blunt the voice of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) who has destroyed key parts of the Biden administration’s agenda.

“It is critical we get the largest margin possible, and 51 is determinatively better than 50,” Rahna Epting, the executive director of MoveOn, a progressive grassroots organization, told NBC News. “It means Republicans can’t block as much of our agenda as they could otherwise.”

In last week’s midterms, Warnock received the overwhelming majority of the Black vote as 90% of Black voters supported the reverend to Walker’s 8% according to an NBC News exit poll.

Black voters’ support of Warnock in this year’s midterms combined with Georgia turning from red to blue in 2020 has helped keep Black voters engaged in the Peach State.

According to Epting, MoveOn went back to work the day after the runoff was declared to encourage Black voters to support Warnock at the polls. The organization has been calling voters in the state as well as emailing and door-to-door canvassing.

“We have to let people know we’re in a runoff and what’s at stake between electing Warnock or Walker,” Epting said. “If we do our job to educate folks about what’s at stake, that there is a runoff election and this is the day by which you need to vote and here’s how you do it … I think we can win.”

A ton of money has also been thrown into the Georgia runoff. Walker’s campaign raised $3 million on the first day after the runoff was declared and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee announced it will invest $7 million into Warnock’s campaign.

Organizations supporting Warnock in Georgia besides MoveOn include Stacey AbramsFair Fight and Black Voters Matter.

“They say that the average voter needs to get at least five contacts in order to be reminded to go vote,” Cliff Albright, a co-founder of Black Voters Matter told NBC News. “So we’re doing text messages. We’re doing social media messaging. We’re doing radio ads. We’re doing door to door. We’re doing phone calls. We’re doing digital advertising on streaming services. … You name the kind of outreach, and we’re doing it.”

Black Arizona Man Executed For 1980 Killings Hours After Appeal Rejection From Supreme Court

Black Arizona Man Executed For 1980 Killings Hours After Appeal Rejection From Supreme Court

An Arizona man was put to death Wednesday after being convicted of murdering two people in 1980.

According to CBS News, the execution marks the state’s third since officials resumed carrying out the death penalty in May after a nearly eight-year hiatus.

The outlet reports that 76-year-old Murray Hooper died at the state prison in Florence just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his appeal.

His appeal was brought to the highest court’s attention after the Arizona Supreme Court ruled to allow Hooper’s execution to proceed in October.

Hooper was executed for his murder convictions in the killings of two people and a third victim who was shot in the head and later survived and testified against him in court at his trial. CBS News reports those deceased victims as William “Pat” Redmond and his mother-in-law, Helen Phelps, who were shot and killed at Redmond’s home in Phoenix. Marilyn, Redmond’s wife, was the surviving victim of the deadly New Year’s Eve attack in 1980.

Authorities say the killings were committed as a motive by a man who wanted to take over Redmond’s printing business. But CBS News reports that Hooper’s lawyers had hoped for the Supreme Court to review his claim that authorities had until recently withheld information they thought was key to overturning his death sentence.

The claim stated that Marilyn Redmond had failed to identify him in a photo lineup. But authorities say that assertion was based on a prosecutor’s mistake, and no such lineup was shown to Marilyn Redmond.

Previously, Hooper’s lawyers argued that no physical evidence tied him to the killings and reportedly pushed for DNA testing and the order of fingerprints since computerized fingerprint systems and DNA testing were not available for criminal cases when Hooper was convicted.

The Supreme Court did not comment on its decision to reject Hooper’s claim.

CBS News reports that two other men, William Bracy and Edward McCall, were also convicted in the killings but died before their death sentences could be carried out.

New Study Finds Blood Pressure Drug May Lower the Risk of Alzheimer’s in Black People Over 60

New Study Finds Blood Pressure Drug May Lower the Risk of Alzheimer’s in Black People Over 60

A new study has found that the new prescription hypertension drug telmisartan could lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in Black people over the age of 60.

According to Medical News Today, the study, spearheaded by Dr. Feixiong Cheng, examined data from over 5.6 million African Americans and Hispanic European Americans aged 60 years and older. The results were published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association Trusted Source.

“Considering race-specific drug responses holds potential for drastically improving patient care. Identifying these candidate drugs can also reveal more information about the disease itself through referencing the medicine’s targets,” the study shared.

According to the medical outlet, telmisartan is generally a well-tolerated medication that regulates blood pressure. The drug is identified as an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB).

“Over five years, older Black adults with moderate or high telmisartan exposure had a 2.5% incidence of AD [Alzheimer’s disease] or dementia,” according to the research team.

“The AAs [African Americans] with low or no telmisartan exposure had a 3.8% incidence of AD.”

Cheng conducted the study at his laboratory at Cleveland Clinic’s Genomic Medicine Institute, where the team used artificial intelligence and a range of statistical analyses. The objective was to test for “causal relationships between telmisartan’s target and AD.” Additionally, human genome sequencing data from the Alzheimer’s Disease Sequencing Project was harnessed.

“The ‘take homes’ for me were that it’s exciting to see this kind of work that looks at things at a population level like this, […] being able to look at the big picture and then focus in on control trials that can be better targeted so that we can [find] effective treatment and preventive strategies of AD and related dementias.”

Subjects in the study included 115,394 Black ARB users and 583,941 non-Hispanic European American ARB users enrolled in their insurance plans for three or more years.

Biking While Black: Charges Won’t Be Filed Against L.A. Deputies In Fatal Shooting of Black Bicyclist

Biking While Black: Charges Won’t Be Filed Against L.A. Deputies In Fatal Shooting of Black Bicyclist

Los Angeles prosecutors announced Tuesday that two Los Angeles County deputies will not face criminal charges for shooting and killing a Black bicyclist in 2020.

According to ABC News, prosecutors believed the deputies, Christian Morales and Michael Garcia, acted in self-defense as they tried to stop 29-year-old Dijon Kizzee who was reportedly riding a bicycle in the wrong direction.

A review by the Justice System Integrity Division of the county district attorney’s office determined that Kizzee was holding a pistol when he was shot by deputies in South Los Angeles who attempted to stop him for a traffic violation on Aug. 31, 2020.

Officials say Kizzee dropped his bicycle and ran away, carrying a bundle of clothing that contained a firearm.

According to ABC News, the deputies told investigators they were unaware that there was a gun in the bundle of clothing and fired at Kizzee after he picked up the handgun that fell out during a struggle with one of the officers.

An autopsy revealed that the 29-year-old was struck 16 times in the front and back by bullets which family members described as “an execution,” CBS News reported.

The two deputies were not wearing body cameras; several surveillance cameras and one cell phone captured video of the incident.

The incident sparked a number of South Los Angeles protests seeking answers for the event.

In a 19-page memo issued last Thursday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office concluded the deputies “reasonably believed, based on the totality of the circumstances, that force was necessary to defend against a threat of death when they initially fired their weapons.”

The memo stated there wasn’t sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the deputies’ final shots weren’t fired in defense of themselves or others in a criminal court.

“My heart goes out to Mr. Kizzee’s family for the loss of their loved one,” District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

Attorneys for Kizzee’s family have questioned why he was stopped in the first place. The family has filed a $35 million claim against the county, which signals a potential lawsuit.

U.S. International Trade Commission Report: People of Color Disproportionately Hurt by Global Trade

U.S. International Trade Commission Report: People of Color Disproportionately Hurt by Global Trade

A new report issued by the U.S. International Trade Commission says people of color and service workers have been disproportionately hurt by the economic disruptions caused by global trade.

The report gathered academic literature and worker testimonies to show that non-white workers have fared worse than their counterparts when it comes to trade shocks, which eliminated jobs and lowered wages for American workers.

The New York Times reports the study was drafted at the request of Katherine Tai, the U.S. trade representative, as politicians on both sides are backing away from policies that push toward more open global markets, which they believe is damaging to U.S. workers. Tai told the Times she intends to use the findings to craft a trade policy that would provide benefits to underserved workers and communities.

“Through the development and publication of new research, data, and analytical tools, we can ensure that U.S. trade policy can be equitable, inclusive, and help boost the competitiveness of our economy in the 21st century,” she said.

Past research shows that changes in trade policies have both pros and cons. Workers with higher educations have benefitted as the U.S. economy opened up to foreign markets. That has resulted in U.S. corporations bringing in more highly skilled workers and industries while moving less-skilled positions— including assembling auto parts, sewing clothes—and other manufacturers outside of the U.S.

The move has been especially apparent during the tech boom, which has fed gentrification in New York and  California, where lifelong residents are being pushed out of their homes and communities by highly skilled workers earning more money.

Meanwhile, people of color with fewer skills and a lack of higher education have struggled to find quality jobs and to shift into new positions and industries. Even when less-skilled workers found new positions, those without a college education earned less than workers with higher education. When controlling for education level, white workers still did better during trade-related disruptions than non-white workers.

Additionally, the report shows the negative impacts of discrimination and racism when it comes to job training, access to technology, and transportation.

“The limited literature shows that, in the face of trade shocks, Black and other non-white workers fare worse than their white counterparts,” the report concluded.

The report warns that many of the implications of trade across the world remain under-researched, especially when it comes to the positive impact of increased experts on U.S. workers.

CIARA, CO PARENT, FUTURE

Singer Ciara Says Clarity in Her Life Forced Her To ‘Level Up’

Ever since Ciara entered the music game, she has experienced success.

She released her Goodies album back in 2004 and has been on the public scene ever since. In an exclusive interview with Women’s Health, she talked about what placed her on the right path and how she was able to free herself to become the woman she is today.

Before the singer and entrepreneur married Denver Broncos quarterback and Super Bowl champion, Russell Wilson, she was in a relationship with the rapper Future (Nayvadius DeMun Cash). The couple started dating in 2013, but broke up a year later. The union brought the birth of their son, Future Zahir.

However, the breakup was not a friendly one, nor was it private, and their drama played out in the public eye.

Ciara told Women’s Health that after the separation from her son’s father, clarity started to set in and she hasn’t looked back since. “I told myself I’ve got to figure out how to navigate in the next chapter of my life,” said.

“All the things I was aspiring to have at that time, even thinking about love, I was like, It’s going to happen when it’s supposed to. But I can’t love anybody to the best of my ability if I’m not loving on myself. I can’t be the best mom if I’m not loving on myself.”

“So I put more focus on me, taking care of me; it was the best thing I could have done.”

After experiencing the trials and tribulations during her time with Future, she gained the wisdom and clarity needed to build with her husband, Russell. They have maintained several businesses, and the mother of three is restarting her singing career, recently releasing two singles from her upcoming album.

As Ciara is taking that 1,2 Step path to her music career, she says, “It’s knowing what gives you a release, knowing what gives you joy. Go to that.”

The star-studded event took place on Sunday at the Hudson Loft in Downtown Los Angeles and was hosted by director and award-winning actress Niecy Nash-Betts.

The Black-owned media company and home of the highly-acclaimed BLACK LOVE docuseries launched the awards brunch to honor the contributions of culture-shifting figures who are dedicated to championing love in all its forms across six categories.

The inaugural list of honorees included Triple Crown of Acting winner Viola Davis and her husband of 19 years Julius Tennon who received the Icon award, Erica & Warryn Campbell who accepted the Partnership award, actor and activist Kendrick Sampson who received the Community Impact award, author and producer Devon Franklin who took home the Wellness award, and Lauren London, recipient of the Self-Love award.

Niecy Nash was also surprised with the Love Ambassador award and made sure to praise her wife Jessica Betts all throughout the event. Speaking with BLACK ENTERPRISE, Nash-Betts championed the Black love she shares with her wife that came after two previous marriages.

Nash and Betts tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in 2020. While it’s the Claws star’s third marriage, it’s her first time being married to her “best friend.”

“I’ve been to the big show a couple of times,” she said. “But this is the first time I’ve ever married my best friend.

“And love and friendship go hand in hand. I don’t know how I missed it all these years but I’m glad I had a chance to experience it.”

Franklin moved the room when he took to the stage to accept his award and spoke openly and honestly about his recent divorce from actress Megan Good.

“Originally when we first did Black Love, Meg and I were in the first season, originally my gameplan was ‘I want to get through life perfectly,'” he shared.

“Everybody talks about Black Love, but nobody talks about Black divorce,” Franklin said. “So what do you do when a picture you created falls apart?”

He went on to address the tearful photo he shared in wake of his divorce announced last December and said he continues to remain transparent as he navigates this journey of life post-divorce. His words were one of many that encompassed honesty, vulnerability, and all things Black love.

Later in the event, Viola and Julius accepted their Icon Award where The Woman King star shared how hard her husband fought to let her know he was for her and no one else. 19 years later and he’ll be right by her side if she wins her first Grammy and becomes an EGOT recipient.

Others in attendance included Jay Ellis who presented Kendrick Sampson with his award, couple Ryan Destiny and Keith Powers, and the cast of Peacock’s Bel Air.

University Of Virginia Shooting Survivor Asked Mom About Teammates While On Ventilator

One of the victims of the deadly shooting at the University of Virginia on Nov. 13 in Charlottesville is alive and woke up to ask about his fellow teammates who were killed, according to his mother, Brenda Hollins.

University of Virginia football players Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry were killed after their former teammate Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. allegedly shot them after they returned from a field trip to Washington, D.C.

A report from CNN noted that Jones allegedly shot Chandler as he slept on the bus. Two others students were also shot but survived, Marlee Morgan and Michael Hollins.

Hollins’ mother told CBS News on Nov. 15 that her son is in critical condition and can’t speak. However, he asked about his teammates in a handwritten note.

“He can’t talk, but he has written D’Sean’s name,” she said. “He has written Devin’s name. And then I believe it was an L — I don’t know what he was writing at the bottom, but he was taking the marker and beating on it because he wants to know.”

She added that Hollins had gotten off the bus safely but returned to help his friends.

“What I’m hearing is Mike made it off the bus, but went back to help his friends and was shot,”  she said. “So, that’s my baby. I could absolutely see him doing that.”

Hollins was shot in the back and the bullet exited through his abdomen. His mother said that he’s had two surgeries so far as the doctors worked to repair the damage.

Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney James Hingeley said that an eyewitness identified Jones as the shooter. A 12-hour manhunt for Jones ensued before he was arrested and taken into custody. Jones was charged with three counts of second-degree murder for killing Davis, Chandler and Perry.

More charges are expected.
