Shaquille O’Neal Says Gorillas ‘Go Crazy’ When They See Him, Miami Zoo Executive Confirms

Shaquille O’Neal Says Gorillas ‘Go Crazy’ When They See Him, Miami Zoo Executive Confirms

Even gorillas at the zoo try to square up with Shaquille O’Neal, NBA’s former ‘Big Man.’

In a recent episode of “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” the former basketball star shared his experience every time he comes across a great ape at the zoo. The discussion initially started from his contemplation about growing his gray hair out. He joked that he would be more like a “silverback” gorilla in his comedic fashion than a “silver fox.”

O’Neal explained that gorillas “go crazy” when he visits the zoos.

“True story,” O’Neil began.

“I’ve been to every zoo in the world, and every time I go to the gorilla section, they look at me like, ‘Hey man, where your fur at?’ For real. For real. That’s how they look at me. They also look at me like, ‘What am I doing in here and you out there?’ And they always go crazy when they see me.”

O’Neal wanted to confirm his story for his guests, so he called wildlife expert and photographer Ron Magill, the communications director for Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens at Zoo Miami. During the call, Magill not only validated the Big Man’s story, but he went on to explain that the male gorillas are especially intimidated by him.

The gorilla “gets intimated, and he looks at Shaq and thinks that Shaq is going to take away his girls, and he gets tight-lipped and tries to stand up and make himself look as big as possible,” Magill said. “But at the end of the day, he backs off. He knows who’s boss.”

With 42 episodes and counting, “The Big Podcast with Shaq”  features Nischelle Turner and Spice Adams as they join O’Neal every week to discuss everything from music and sports to trending topics in pop culture. You can listen on Apple Podcasts.

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Joins CNN as Political Commentator

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Joins CNN as Political Commentator

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Monday that she has joined CNN as a political commentator.

Bottoms took her excitement to Twitter, calling her new role a dream. As a Florida A&M University alumna with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and graphic communication, she recalled applying to the journalism program at the Atlanta-based network, but she didn’t get in.

“To now join the team nearly 30 (years) later is a reminder that a dream deferred is never a dream denied,” Bottoms concluded in her tweet.

Bottoms, who entered the mayoral office in 2018, completed her term in 2022 after announcing she would not run for a second term last year. While in her mayoral seat, she helped establish an office of violence reduction to develop and implement strategies to ensure a safer city. As a Democrat, she was considered a potential running mate for President Joe Biden with her emergence as a force in national politics over the last year.

In addition to her new ranking, Bottom serves as vice-chair of civic engagement and voter protection for the Democratic National Committee. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she will be the first honorary fellow of the HBCU Executive Leadership Institute, a “groundbreaking initiative that serves as an incubator for recruiting and developing future presidents for over 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).”

There has been no official date for when Bottoms will appear on the cable news network.

Protesters Demand Justice After Amir Locke is Killed by Minneapolis Police

Protesters Demand Justice After Amir Locke is Killed by Minneapolis Police

Following the deaths of George Floyd and Daunte Wright, the community of Minneapolis is outraged once again over the killing of a 22-year-old Black man during a police raid.

Amir Locke was killed by a member of the Minnesota Police Department during a no-knock warrant that his name wasn’t even included on, WFAA reported. Body camera footage shows police using a key to enter an apartment to execute the warrant last Wednesday.

https://twitter.com/MaliniBasu_/status/1490509843228250122?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1490509843228250122%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wfaa.com%2Farticle%2Fnews%2Flocal%2Famir-locke-22-year-old-killed-by-minneapolis-police-no-knock-warrant-was-moving-to-dallas%2F287-6ef24b66-d572-4048-a6e3-5fbf739df57d

During the raid, a SWAT team stormed into the apartment and kicked the sofa where Locke was wrapped in a blanket, sleeping. Video shows Officer Mark Hannaman firing at least three shots that ended up killing Locke less than 10 seconds after they entered the apartment.

Locke’s family revealed that he was actually in the process of relocating to Dallas this week to be with his mother.

“Never would I have imagined standing up here and talking about the execution of my son by the Minneapolis Police Department. He was at a sleepover at his cousin’s place,” Locke’s mother, Karen Wells, said.

“My heart is hurting. Deep pain. Deep sorrow,” Andre Locke, Amir’s father, said.

On Sunday, a car caravan gathered to protest Amir’s death, KSTP reported. Dozens of cars headed down Lake Street in South Minneapolis with their hazards on, horns blasting, and vehicles covered with “Black Lives Matter” banners.

The car caravan came one day after hundreds protested in the streets of downtown Minneapolis demanding justice for Amir. During a press conference last week, local civil rights attorney Nekima Levy Armstrong interrupted interim Minneapolis Police Chief Amelia Huffman and Mayor Jacob Frey to demand answers about why a no-knock warrant was needed in the first place. However, Huffman left without answering the question.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump and Jeff Storms are representing Locke’s family and released a statement on Friday about pursuing justice for Amir.

“Today, it was reported that the search warrant used to enter the residence where Amir was staying was changed from a ‘knock’ warrant to a ‘no-knock’ warrant at the insistence of the Minneapolis police,” the statement read.

“This inexplicable yet deliberate choice needlessly ended Amir’s life. It’s past time that the Minneapolis PD be transparent and accountable to Amir’s family and the community that they are sworn to protect. No-knock raids at the hands of law enforcement continue to take the lives of innocent Black people. We ask that just as people raised their voices for Breonna Taylor, they do the same for Amir Locke. Enough is enough.”

Black Disney Imagineer Lanny Smoot Makes History by Earning 102 Patents

Black Disney Imagineer Lanny Smoot Makes History by Earning 102 Patents

As the country celebrates the achievements of Black people throughout the month, Disney is celebrating Lanny Smoot for receiving his 100th patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

According to a Disney release, Smoot has spent 24 years at Disney and has a total of 102 patents, the most patents by anyone at the company. Smoot said his love for engineering and inventing was inspired by his father, who he describes as a jack-of-all-trades.

“Growing up, our family did not have a lot of money,” Smoot said in the release. “My dad was a bit of a jack-of-all-trades and taught himself how to make many mechanical gadgets, including several of my early toys. One of my earliest childhood memories was him bringing home an electric bell, a light bulb, some batteries, and wire. He set up the bell to ring and the bulb to light, and that light lit my career!”

Today, as a Disney Research Fellow, Smoot’s role represents the highest level of technical research achievement at Walt Disney. The inventions Smoot and his team have produced at Disney include Madame Leota’s floating head in the Séance Room at the Haunted Mansion attraction; Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure, which opened in 2009; and the virtual and interactive koi ponds at the Crystal Lotus Restaurant at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel.

Smoot, who served as a judge for Disney’s innovation challenge for HBCU schools in December 2021, also discussed how important it is to get Black students and students of color involved in STEM programs, engineering, and inventing.

“We need to give young students—especially Black students and people of color—experience in these fields. The Walt Disney Co. is digging deeply into this by making sure that we mentor diverse young people, and I’ve done that many times myself.”

Disney is celebrating Black History Month by opening the first Black-owned business in its Downtown Disney District. The animation giant has also partnered with Roots band members Questlove and Black Thought for the animated series Rise Up, Sing Out.

NBC’s Mike Tirico Leaving Beijing Olympics Due to COVID and Other Reasons

NBC’s Mike Tirico Leaving Beijing Olympics Due to COVID and Other Reasons

A popular sports reporter is cutting his Olympics coverage short for somewhat murky reasons.

NBC’s prime-time Olympic sportscaster, Mike Tirico, who was originally scheduled to be in Beijing until Thursday, will be returning to the United States after the Monday night broadcast, according to the Associated Press.

The reason given by officials from the network was that Tirico’s schedule was prone to change based on COVID-19 and other factors.

He is expected to fly from China to the NBC Sports headquarters based in Stamford, Connecticut, to host the Olympic coverage for Wednesday and Thursday shows. He will then head to Los Angeles on Friday to anchor the broadcasts for the Olympics and through Sunday’s Super Bowl. Tirico will then head back to Stamford for the final week of Olympic coverage. The Games end Feb. 20.

Deadline reported the adjustment was believed to be staff-related. There are many on-air commentators and production personnel based in Connecticut covering the games remotely. NBC Sports had said earlier that Tirico’s schedule was subject to change.

Last week, during the coverage of the opening ceremonies, Tirico stated that China was “the nation where COVID began,” and he also discussed the challenges of coverage due to pandemic restrictions in the country. He also brought attention to the United States diplomatic boycott of the Games, which is being joined by other western countries. While speaking on the subject, he said the boycott was attributed to “citing China’s human rights record, and the U.S. government’s declaration that the Chinese communist party is guilty of committing genocide on the Uyghur Muslim population in that Western Xinjiang region. That is a charge that China denies.”

There is speculation that these comments may be part of “other factors” NBC behind Tirico’s early departure from China.

Stacey Abrams Draws Ire After Photo Shows Her Sitting Indoors Unmasked With Schoolchildren

Stacey Abrams Draws Ire After Photo Shows Her Sitting Indoors Unmasked With Schoolchildren

Voting rights advocate and Democratic candidate for Georgia governor Stacey Abrams has come under fire after a deleted tweet featured her unmasked surrounded by masked schoolchildren.

According to CNN, the photo was taken at Glennwood Elementary School in Decatur, Georgia. It was tweeted by principal Holly Brookins, who called it an “extraordinary way to kick off the 3rd Annual African-American Read-In at Glennwood and Black History Month. Thrilled to host @staceyabrams author of Stacey’s Extraordinary Words!”

Abrams quote-tweeted the photo, thanking the principal for hosting her. Both images have since been deleted, and Brookings has deactivated her account.

The photo has angered many in the state, especially those who have repeatedly voiced frustration at masking policies in the state. The city of Decatur has an indoor masking policy that runs through the end of the month, and the city’s schools have a similar mask policy.

Abrams responded to the incident Sunday, taking aim at those who chastised her in response to the photos and outlining worse moves politicians in the state have made in response to the virus. The Abrams campaign said she did enter the school with a mask but removed it so the students could hear her.

“It is shameful that our opponents are using a Black History Month reading event for Georgia children as the impetus for a false political attack, and it is pitiful and predictable that our opponents continue to look for opportunities to distract from their failed records when it comes to protecting public health during the pandemic,” the campaign’s statement said according to CNN.

“One of Stacey’s opponents downplayed the virus while trading stock to profit off the pandemic after his private coronavirus briefings as a Senator. Another of her opponents attacked mayors seeking to protect their citizens and has failed to expand access to Medicaid even as rural hospitals close. This pathetic, transparent and silly attack is beneath anyone who claims he wants to lead Georgia.”

Among those who criticized Abrams for the photos were Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and former The View host Meghan McCain.

New York Giants Hire Black Assistant GM Following Brian Flores’ Racial Discrimination Lawsuit

Barely a week after being named in a bombshell racial discrimination lawsuit, the New York Giants have hired a Black assistant general manager.

According to Giants.com, new general manager Joe Schoen has hired Brandon Brown as the team’s assistant general manager.

Before joining the Eagles for five seasons, Brown worked two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts as an advance scout (2016) and scouting assistant (2015). The 33-year-old was promoted to the team’s director of player personnel in 2021. Brown ran the Eagles’ pro scouting department and also did some crossover work doing college scouting as well with co-director of player personnel Ian Cunningham.

“Brandon has a strong reputation around the league as a leader, evaluator and consensus builder,” said Schoen in a written statement. “He is a tireless worker who has experience in pro personnel and college scouting. He has a progressive approach to the evaluation process. Brandon will help lead the player personnel department as well as assist across the entire football operation.”

This move comes after former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores filed a lawsuit against the National Football League and three football teams accusing them of discrimination.

According to NFL.com, Flores, who is Black, sued the NFL and three teams, the Miami Dolphins, the Denver Broncos, and the New York Giants, for discrimination based on his firing from Miami and pertaining to the interview process he went through with Denver and New York. (This week, Flores was passed over for the Houston Texans’ head coaching job.)

In another move that is sure to spark discussion, Kevin Abrams, the Giants’ assistant general manager for the past 20 years, was named the team’s senior vice president of football operations and strategy over the weekend.

Leslie Jones Is Done Live Tweeting The Olympics Because She’s ‘Tired of Fighting’ With NBC

Comedian Leslie Jones was a hit with her live-tweeting during the Tokyo Olympics. But now Jones is having second thoughts about recapping the winter Olympics in Beijing.

On Monday, the SNL alum shared an Instagram post explaining how copycats and criticism are making her no longer enjoy recapping the Olympics.

“Leslie Jones does not stay anywhere I’m not welcomed,” she captioned the lengthy message. “#uptoyallnow,” she added as a hashtag.

Jones’s announcement comes days after the Winter Olympics kicked off. She started posting dozens of videos offering her comedic take on everything from figure skating to skiing competitions, People reports.

But after noticing the negative response from onlookers and even people attempting to recreate her original content, the Ghostbusters star is considering calling it quits with her live recaps.

“i’m starting to feel like this should be my last olympics i live tweet,” Jones said. “I’m tired of fighting the folks who don’t want me to do it.”

“They block my videos and they get folks who think they can do it like me. And I’m tired of fighting them,” she added.

Noting how much she truly enjoys watching the Olympic games and admiring the athletic ability of the players, Jones credits her passion as the reason why her commentary is so well-received.

“I love the athletes, and they love me doing it,” she continued. “And I know ya’ll love it. But now it’s gotten too hard. And no one is fighting for or with me. Soooo I guess I’ll leave it to the professionals. But thank you for all the love.”

When one fan left a comment telling Jones to “forget the hate,” the comedian replied, “It’s not the hate it’s nbc.”

During the Tokyo Olympics, comedian Kevin Hart and rapper Snoop Dogg gave their Olympic commentary for NBC’s Peacock network. Considering Leslie’s public stance, it looks like she is being held back from NBC by commentating and helping them get attention around the winter games.

Actress Holly Robinson Peete left a supportive comment for Jones, telling her she deserves the same type of platform Hart and Snoop received.

“Yeah your commentary is great and you should be doing this on Peacock like snoop and Kev!!!!!!” Peete wrote.

BLM Activist Pamela Moses Receives Six-Year Prison Sentence For Illegally Voting After Being Told Her Voting Rights Was Restored

BLM Activist Pamela Moses Receives Six-Year Prison Sentence For Illegally Voting After Being Told Her Voting Rights Was Restored

Pamela Moses, a Black Lives Matter activist and former Democratic mayoral candidate in Memphis, has been sentenced to six years in prison for illegally voting in Tennessee despite being told by the state that she could vote again.

Moses, 44, lost her right to vote when she pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence, which she didn’t know. However, after serving probation, she began working on restoring her voting rights. In 2019, the Tennessee Department of Corrections and the County Election Commission both signed off on Moses’ voter registration application restoring her voting rights.

According to a Washington Post report, the officials who restored Moses voting rights acknowledged they made a mistake saying her probation was finalized, which meant Moses wasn’t eligible to vote.

As a result, Moses was charged with illegally registering to vote when she submitted the certificate as part of her voting registration. Moses was convicted late last year and received a six-year sentence last week.

“I relied on the election commission because those are the people who are supposed to know what you’re supposed to do,” she told WREG before her sentencing. “And I found out that they didn’t know.”

Moses’ sentence has been condemned by many, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which said in a tweet Moses’ verdict is a stunning reminder that there are two justice systems in America.

Three white men, Bruce Batman, Robert Richard Lynn, and Edward Snodgrass, were all convicted of illegal voting last year. Snodgrass received the harshest sentence of the three men, a whopping three days in prison; the other two received probation.

“This case is one about the disparity in sentencing and punishment — and one that shouldn’t have happened,” Bede Anyanwu, Moses’ attorney, told The Post Friday. Anyanwu added Moses plans to appeal her sentence.

Moses has maintained her innocence in the situation, saying she thought her voting rights were restored when she received a letter from the state saying so. However, Criminal Court Judge W. Mark Ward didn’t share Moses’ view of the situation and accused her of deceiving election officials.

Ward added that he would consider placing her on probation after she serves nine months if she maintains good behavior.

Janai Nelson, the associate director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, told NBC News the situation will only stoke the flames of voter suppression and disenfranchisement that is breaking Democracy in the U.S. today.
