Venu Sports Venture Dissolves Before Launching

ESPN, FOX, and Warner Bros. Discovery have decided not to launch the collaborative sports streaming service.

Venu Sports, which brought together ESPN, FOX, and Warner Bros. Discovery for a joint sports streaming service is no more, the three entities said in a joint statement.

“In an ever-changing marketplace, we determined that it was best to meet the evolving demands of sports fans by focusing on existing products and distribution channels,” the statement read in part. “We are proud of the work that has been done on Venu to date and grateful to the Venu staff, whom we will support through this transition period.”

The Hollywood Reporter reported that early in 2024, the three companies announced Venu Sports anticipated to launch before the NFL season. The plan was to provide a litany of sports channels attributed to the brands involved. It would have operated like a vMVPD (virtual multichannel video programming distributor) where each streaming service would showcase the sports from their respective channels.

Shortly after the announcement, sports-focused streaming service Fubo filed a lawsuit against Venu Sports, accusing the companies of violating antitrust rules.

Venu made plans to launch the service for $42.99 per month, but U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett issued an injunction to stop the launch pending a trial.

On Jan. 6, in a surprise deal, Disney announced that it was merging Hulu and Live TV with Fubo, creating the second-biggest streaming MVPD after YouTube TV.  Although Disney would be the majority owner, it will be run by Fubo’s executive team. Fubo then stated it would end the antitrust case filed against the aforementioned companies.

According to Reuters, although Fubo withdrew the lawsuit, two other parties, EchoStar (Dish)  and DirecTV, sent letters to the federal district court judge on Jan. 10 to argue that Fubo’s withdrawing of the lawsuit still doesn’t solve the antitrust issues the former company brought to light.

tWitch’s Mom Condemns Widow’s ‘Misleading’ Claims About Her Son

tWitch's mom is no longer willing to stay quiet and will not allow her late son's wife to get away with claims of hiding drugs and "alarming" secrets.

Stephen “tWitch” Boss’s mother, Connie Boss Alexander, says Allison Holker is spreading “misleading” and “hurtful” claims about the “So You Think You Can Dance” alum, and as his mother, she will not allow the accusations to go unaddressed.

Boss Alexander says that for the past two years, her focus has been strictly focused on family healing and connection after tWitch died in 2022. However, she is speaking out on behalf of her son after Holker, the 36-year-old widow of the late dancer, spread false accusations about tWitch’s alleged drug stash in a recent interview discussing her new book, This Far: My Story of Love, Loss, and Embracing the Light.

“Our family is absolutely appalled by the misleading and hurtful claims made about my son, Stephen Boss,” Boss Alexander wrote in a Jan. 9 post on Instagram. She said the recent publications are untrue and “have crossed every line of decency.” Her statement continues, “We will not stand by while his name and legacy are tarnished. He doesn’t deserve this, and the kids don’t deserve this.” Boss Alexander concluded, “When I read these dreadful claims about my baby, our beloved Stephen, I realized I could not stay silent any longer. Our family will ensure his name and memory are protected, and we are committed to defending his honor.”

In the Jan. 7 interview with People, Holker claims that as she searched their closet for an outfit to dress her husband in for his funeral, she discovered a “cornucopia” of drugs that Boss allegedly stashed in their home. “It was a really triggering moment for me because there were a lot of things I discovered in our closet that I did not know existed,” she told the outlet. Holker went on to accuse her husband of “hiding so much” and “trying to self-medicate and cope” with feelings.

The claims have led family, friends, and fans to defend the late DJ, including “Wicked” associate choreographer and close friend, Comfort Fedoke. On Instagram, Fedoke stated that “something felt off from the very beginning ” and called out Holker’s disrespect toward tWitch’s mother and family.

As previously mentioned by BLACK ENTERPRISE, another close friend, Courtney Ann Platt, released a statement in the late DJ’s defense. In it, she calls out Holker’s behavior toward tWitch’s mother, who she allegedly treated “like garbage this entire time.” Both Fedoke and Platt noted the NDAs loved ones were asked to sign to attend the funeral. Their public statements followed posts on X from a cousin, Darielle, who addressed Holker’s claims and her alleged attempt to “tarnish his legacy.”

The former Ellen DeGeneres Show co-executive producer died by suicide in December 2022. According to a Jan. 8 post by Darielle, she was at the small funeral service for those close to tWitch. However, Holker held another service for the “others.”

Mississippi Supreme Court Suspends Civil Rights Attorney Carlos Moore From Practicing For 1 Year

Hopefully he has learned his lesson....

Civil rights attorney Carlos Moore has been banned from practicing law for one year by the Mississippi Supreme Court, following numerous calls to have him removed, Action News 5 reported. 

The ruling was handed down on Dec. 31, 2024, after years of troubling accusations. Court documents found a complaint dated back to February 2022 accusing Moore of allegedly violating several state rules on professional conduct while handling settlement funds from a wrongful death lawsuit filed in 2017. He settled the case for $300,000 and then allegedly placed the funds in his trust account instead of the victim’s estate.

Along with being banned from practicing for 365 days, Moore was instructed to tell his clients that he could no longer handle their cases and must reimburse the Mississippi Bar $599.30 in court expenses.

Moore, who has practiced since 2002, grew in popularity after he was tapped to represent Aderrien Murry, the 11-year-old Black child who was shot by an Indianola police officer after he called the police in 2023. In 2024, Moore, who also served as a Delta municipal judge, received backlash and was recommended to be removed from the bench by the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance. Comments on past cases allegedly violated the Judicial Code of Conduct.

His social media presence caused him to be reprimanded on several occasions, including alleged comments on open cases back in 2019 on Facebook and then Twitter under his “Judge Carlos Moore” page, according to Delta News. Following the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse in 2021 for shooting people during riots in Wisconsin, Moore faced accusations of making racially-geared comments under the same social media account. 

Moore’s alleged action resulted in a private reprimand after he was accused of posting political endorsements and ads for his law firm around the same time.

He also appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show to allegedly promote his “Do Better ASAP” program. While chatting with the talk show host, the initiative resulted in his earning the title of “Rad Human,” which didn’t sit well with other judges. Commission chair Judge Ryan Bruhl said that Moore “is nothing if not consistent in his predictability in his complete and utter disdain for any professional conduct rule.”

However, it wasn’t all bad news for Moore. In the Spring of 2024, he made local headlines after preventing a devastating workplace tragedy after a client with a gun demanded large sums of money.

He calmly disputed the confrontation by telling members of his team to stay in their offices after being concerned of an outcome that resulted in the angry client not receiving $25,000 as he hoped for. “We don’t take it for granted that the Lord spared our lives yesterday,” the attorney said at the time of the incident.

Number of NYC Bus And Subway Riders Sightly Increases As New Congestion Pricing Continues  

But what will they do about the influx of public commuters?

Data shows New York City’s controversial congestion pricing has resulted in an increase of riders on public transit, ABC 7 reported. 

The measure was put in place to assist in reducing congestion formed by the hustle and bustle of Manhattan commuters. Started on Jan. 5, data reveals the number of subway riders was 3.77 million, up by 12.7% on Jan. 7 and approximately 1.28 million MTA bus riders, a 10% increase. It may be too early to determine if the program is working throughout the whole island, but it seems to be effective in certain sections. 

The city saw lighter traffic on the bridges and tunnels on the first day of the program, heading into the Congestion Relief Zone (CRZ), which is south of the busy Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, according to amNew York. Other routes have experienced mixed results. 

Other data shows that the plan isn’t speeding up traffic in the way it was designed for. In 2024, Manhattan’s average speed was roughly 11.7 mph, and at the start of the congestion program, the average speed decreased to 11.5 mph. Normal congested roads like the southbound FDR Drive rated at 28.2 mph at 5 p.m. on the same day, in comparison to 18.2 mph in 2024 — a 55% speed increase.

The big surprise came from rush hour tunnel traffic being lighter since the start of the program, according to data from traffic analytics firm INRIX. “The tunnels are pretty, you know, speedy. And yet, the downtown area shows a little bit of improvement, but not grandiose improvement. That’s the shocking thing,” INRIX’s Bob Pishue said. Commuter Filippa Grisafi, who travels into the city for her job in Lower Manhattan, confirms the decrease in traffic. “From an express bus commuter perspective, Tuesday, Wednesday, and today, we didn’t hit traffic until the approach to the Battery Tunnel all three days,” she said.

The increase in subway riders in NYC isn’t the same for commuters who rely on New Jersey transit. Governor Phil Murphy (D) says he doesn’t want to jump to conclusions just yet, as it is still early, since his goal is to keep fighting tolls. “It’s only a few days, and I don’t want to draw conclusions yet,” Murphy said. 

“But I have not gotten reports that NJ Transit trains, buses, and PATH trains are overflowing.”

While the true impact may not be seen for a few weeks, experts have their concerns about other pressing issues that correlate with the congestion pricing, such as an influx of for-hire vehicles-like Uber and Lyft. “My worry is if the city keeps increasing the number of Ubers and Lyfts, whatever gains that we get from congestion pricing will be offset by additional vehicles that stay in the traffic all day long,” transportation expert and former city traffic commissioner Sam Schwartz said.

Bozoma Saint John, Jhené Aiko, Grieve After Homes Burn In Los Angeles Mass Fire

Pacific Palisades residents are facing an "unimaginable loss" after wildfire burned their homes

Celebrities are grieving the loss of their homes and personal possessions in the aftermath of the extreme wildfires that swept through Los Angeles neighborhoods and forced residents to evacuate.

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (RHOBH) star Bozoma “Boz” Saint John is asking for prayers for her and her daughter Lael after the fire destroyed the home Saint John says she prayed and “worked in blood, sweat and tears for.” Saint John gave Instagram followers a glimpse into the beach home she fought for after a battle with racist neighbors. The reality star said she purchased the home “in a trust within a trust, so no one would know that [a] widowed, single Black woman with a teenager was buying on the exclusively-held beach.” Dreams for Saint John to share the house with her family and friends and spend her time how she wanted, are on now on hold as the former chief marketing officer of Netflix faces what she called an “unimaginable loss.”

Singer Jhené Aiko sent prayers up for everyone in the area on Jan. 9, when she shared that her home was destroyed in the wildfires.

“Me and my children’s home is gone,” Aiko shared on Instagram, adding that her home “burned to the ground” with all of their belongings inside.

“Lord have mercy,” she added, thankful to still have her family. The singer said her “heart is so heavy” after facing the damage that has forced her family to start from scratch. “God bless us ALL,” she captioned her post.

According to Forbes, other celebrities who own homes in the area include Vice President Kamala Harris, rapper Kid Cudi, and the family of Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard. The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning due to the extreme weather conditions which left at least five dead and forced over 130,000 evacuations. AP News noted that over 30 square miles and over 5,300 structures across the Pacific Palisades burned. The fire has been reported as the “most destructive” in the history of Los Angeles. Northwest of the Pacific Palisades, residents responded to evacuation orders from the Los Angeles Fire Department on Thursday after the Kenneth Fire erupted near West Hills. The new fire follows Wednesday’s Sunset Fire and Tuesday night’s Hurst Fire in Sylmar.

Tina Knowles shared a heartfelt message for those who lost their homes in the wildfires. On Instagram, she shared a video of a water view as she looked out from her Malibu bungalow. What she described as her “favorite place, my sanctuary, my sacred Happy Place” is now gone due to the disaster.

President Joe Biden committed to covering 100% of costs for fire management and debris removal, according to Governor Gavin Newsom. The funding will cover costs for 180 days. As previously mentioned by BLACK ENTERPRISE, Airbnb is offering free housing for residents of Altadena, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Sylan who were forced to evacuate, or whose homes were lost in the fires.

As of now, several events, including the Critics Choice Awards and the NBA matchup between the Lakers and the Hornets have been rescheduled as California continues to face low humidity, strong winds, power outages, and water damages. The NFL wild-card playoff game between the Rams and the Minnesota Vikings was moved to Arizona.

Harlem’s Rucker Park Designated As National Commemorative Site

'Rucker Park is known across the world as a special place that represents New York City’s rich basketball heritage, streetball culture, and authentic love for the game,' said Senator Schumer.

Harlem’s famed basketball playground, Rucker Park, has recently been designated as a National Commemorative Site after local politicians proposed the acknowledgment, leading to President Biden signing the bill into law.

New York Democratic Senator Charles Schumer and Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) announced that the popular New York City playground was recognized through the Holcombe Rucker Park Commemorative Site Act. It was passed in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, with President Biden signing it into law on January 4.

“It has been my esteemed honor to introduce federal legislation recognizing the tremendous impact of the Harlem community, designating the Holcombe Rucker Park as a national commemorative site,” said Congressman Espaillat. “Thank you to my colleagues, Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, for their collaborative efforts to secure passage of the bill in the U.S. Senate and to each of the community advocates who helped get this bill across the finish line. I am deeply appreciative to President Biden for signing this historic bill into law, enshrining Harlem as the mecca of Black culture, the legacy of Holcombe Rucker to America’s basketball history, and empowering New York City youth and families for generations to come.”

The Harlem park is named after Holcombe Rucker, who was a World War II veteran, scholar, mentor, and coach. Many iconic New Yorkers took to the basketball court to showcase their skills to those in attendance. Rucker, through his contributions, helped nurture some of basketball’s most talented players while helping deliver over 700 scholarships. The coach hosted numerous pro-am (professional-amateur) tournaments at the famed basketball court and assisted with helping players develop their talent through the sport.

“Rucker Park is known across the world as a special place that represents New York City’s rich basketball heritage, streetball culture, and authentic love for the game,” said Senator Schumer. “From NBA stars to local legends, Rucker Park has hosted generations of basketball icons and visionaries. Holcombe Rucker dedicated his life to serving the Harlem community and furthering the game of basketball, and I’m glad we can honor that legacy through the national commemoration of Rucker Park.”

The famed park is located on 155th Street and Eighth Avenue, steps from the Polo Grounds Housing Projects (the former site of the old Polo Grounds stadium that housed Major League Baseball’s New York Giants before they moved to San Francisco, the New York Mets, and the New York Yankees). Over the years, while the Entertainers Classic (known simply as the Rucker’s) held a summer league, many NBA players took flight on the courts, including Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Rod Strickland, LeBron James, Allen Iverson, and many others. The tournament was also known for bringing out top rappers from the New York City area, including Fat Joe and Jay-Z, among others.

White Men Charged With Shooting At Black FedEx Driver Granted Dismissal Of All Charges

Brandon and Greg Case cannot be tried again for allegedly shooting at FedEx driver.

Charges against two Mississippi men who allegedly shot at FedEx driver D’Monterrio Gibson have been dismissed, the Associated Press reported.

Gregory Case and his son, Brandon Case, stood trial for the incident in a Lincoln County court. The two men allegedly shot at Gibson as he worked for FedEx delivering packages along his delivery route. Both men were charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, and shooting into a motor vehicle for the January 2022 incident.

On Jan. 6, Mississippi Circuit Court Judge David Strong suggested that state prosecutors made “intentional errors” that violated the rights of the Cases and declared a full dismissal of all charges with prejudice.

“Having conducted a hearing and reviewed the record and all pleadings, the court finds that the investigator in the case intentionally withheld evidence from the defense, and even from the district attorney, on numerous occasions, resulting in egregious discovery violations by the state,” Strong’s order says. “These repeated intentional errors are a clear violation of the Rules of Criminal Procedure, as well as well-established case law, justifying the dismissal of the indictment with prejudice.”

The January 2025 dismissal came the same day a retrial was set to begin, as the first trial ended in a mistrial on Aug. 17, 2023.

Judge Strong agreed that Detective Fernando’s testimony of finding guns in the home of one of the defendants and his claim of discovering shell casings at the scene were contradicted by a video interview of Gibson after the event. Continuing the trial would have violated the Cases’ right to a “speedy trial” and exposed them to “double jeopardy.”

Gibson shared photos of bullet holes in his delivery truck to the Mississippi Free Press in February 2022. The Cases were indicted in November 2022, 11 months after the incident. Brandon Case’s lawyer, Dan Kitchens, and Gregory Case’s lawyer, Terrell Stubbs, declined to comment on the case.

Deion Sanders Will Coach An NFL Team Under One Condition

"The only way I would consider is to coach my sons.”

With his coaching success thus far, many are speculating that Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders could be heading to the National Football League, but in a recent interview, he revealed there is only one way he’d take a job in the NFL.

Sanders appeared on Good Morning America on Wednesday, Jan. 8, to promote his latest Coach Prime series. While discussing the Amazon Prime show, he was asked if he intended to take his talents to the league he once had significant success in. While laughing at the question as pundits tried to line him up with several possibilities in the NFL, he gave a more definitive response instead of sidestepping it.

He stated that his current path into the NFL would be if his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, who played for their father at Jackson State University and the University of Colorado Boulder, were on the team he would be coaching.

“You know what?” Sanders responded, “The only way I would consider is to coach my sons.”

Ending all speculations that he would join any NFL team looking to utilize his expertise. He added that he is enjoying his time in Colorado.

“I love Colorado,” Sanders stated. “Now I love my Buffaloes. I love everything that we’re building. I love everything that we’re doing, and I love Boulder, Colorado. I do, immensely.”

With the success of the football programs he’s headed at Jackson State and Colorado, three of his players could play in the NFL next season. His quarterback son, Sheduer, is projected to be the No. 1 quarterback picked in the draft, while two-way player Travis Hunter is anticipated to be a Top 5 pick. His other son, Shilo, could also be drafted.

Nearly 1,000 Incarcerated Firefighters Are Battling California Wildfires For $10 A Day

Prison firefighters are four times more likely to sustain injuries than trained firefighters.

A number of incarcerated individuals from California state prisons are working for up to $10 per day to battle the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, ABC News reports. 

People who sign up with the Conservation (Fire) Camps program have been seen working alongside members of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection crew members (Cal Fire). The incarcerated firefighters have been working nonstop to assist with cutting fire lines and getting rid of fuel from behind structures in hopes it will slow the spread of the fire. 

Their pay: between $5.80 to $10.24 a day.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) labeled the 800 incarcerated firefighters as “crucial support” during emergencies. The Fire Camp Program operates within 35 minimum-security facilities in 25 counties, including two camps for incarcerated women.

“CDCR Fire Camp Program firefighters are proud to be embedded with CAL FIRE personnel to protect lives, property, and natural resources in Southern California,” the agency said in a statement.

The five wildfires have destroyed homes, businesses, and iconic landmarks throughout the LA area. The largest of the fires in the Pacific Palisades has destroyed more than 19,000 acres, setting ablaze thousands of structures

This isn’t the first time incarcerated people have been called on to battle fires. 

They have have been fighting fires since the program’s establishment in 1915. However, the program progressed during World War II once forestry staff left to fight in the war, according to NPR. Imprisoned people were tapped to volunteer and 41 camps were created.

While some enjoy the work, claiming to have a true calling as a first responder, data “it comes at a pretty steep cost,” said Bianca Tylek, executive director of criminal justice advocacy organization Worth Rises.

An investigation from 2018 found that prison volunteers are four times more likely to sustain cuts, bruises or broken bones compared to trained firefighters. Data also show they are eight times more likely to struggle with injuries as a result of inhaling smoke, ash, and debris. 

The programs have been listed as controversial to advocates and state lawmakers across the country due to the lack of payment prisoners receive. California and Nevada voted on whether to ban the use of the imprisoned as unpaid labor in 2024. Nevada voters approved the measure, but California rejected it.

“The ongoing Southern California wildfires really illustrate why that effort was so important,” Tylek said. “As hundreds of incarcerated people take to the front lines of these wildfires to defend the personhood and property of people around the Los Angeles area and California, I hope that Californians can start to realize their value.”

Marcus Freeman Becomes First Black Head Coach To Lead Team To National College Football Championship Game

Notre Dame beat Penn State, 27-24 to advance to the College Football Championship

History was made on Thursday, Jan. 9 when Notre Dame beat Penn State to advance to the College Football Championship, making the Fighting Irish coach, Marcus Freeman, the first Black man to lead his team to the championship at the FBS level (NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision).

According to CBS Sports, the No. 7 seed, Notre Dame, with a record of 14-1, narrowly defeated the No. 6 seed, Penn State, who ends the season at 13-3, with a game-ending field goal to make the final score, 27-24. The victory propelled the team to the championship game, which will be led by Freeman, whose father is Black and whose mother is South Korean, giving him the distinction to not only be the first Black head coach to make it to the championship game but also the first Asian as well.

“I’ve said this before: I don’t ever want to take attention away from the team,” Freeman said. “It is an honor, and I hope all coaches — minorities, Black, Asian, white, it doesn’t matter, great people — continue to get opportunities to lead young men like this. But this ain’t about me. This is about us. We’re going to celebrate what we’ve done because it’s so special.”

With the victory, Freeman’s team is also the first team in history to win two bowl games in a single postseason, as they compete for the national championship for the first time in more than a decade, since last playing in the national championship in 2012.

Since becoming the head coach in 2021, Freeman has won 34 games against nine losses in three full seasons leading the Fighting Irish.
