Waffle House Workers On Strike In South Carolina Over Security Issues

Waffle House Workers On Strike In South Carolina Over Security Issues

In the morning of July 8, workers at a Waffle House in Columbia, South Carolina walked out of the popular breakfast stop and picked up signs to protest their working conditions. The strike is set to last for three days, as employees protest a variety of issues regarding their safety and wages they feel management undermines.

The walkout is supported by the locally-founded Union of Southern Service Workers, created to uplift low wage workers across the food and service industries. They are urging for more frequent on-sight security, regulated scheduling, and the suspension of mandatory check deductions for meals eaten, or not eaten, during shifts.

Longstanding employee Marshawna Parker, who has worked for Waffle House for over two decades, told The State there’s “no excuse” for the lack of proper security to ensure safety for workers. While a security guard is present on weekend nights, Parker believes the constant shootings on the premises require security 24/7, the same as the casual food chain’s operating hours.

In regards to the meal deductions, Waffle House takes out a fee, ranging from $3 to $6, for every shift meal, whether or not the employees utilize the food option. The mandatory deductions are not fair to the workers, stating that they would like the meal deductions to be opt-in only.

The issues of pay deductions and safety are not solely the Columbia locations’ problem, as other Waffle Houses across South Carolina have been exposed to violent incidents, such as shootings, as well.

Waffle Houses across the nation have been marred by fights and shootouts, as even detailed in The New York Times, but the Columbia-based employees are taking a stand against the gaps in security that encourage it.

However, before the strike commenced, the employees did voice their concerns in a petition sent to upper-management on July 1. However, when they were met with silence, further action through direct protest had to be set.

Fortunately for those on the strike, they are being supported by fellow workers impacted in their own industry and other restaurants, as all are part of the union to enact change for better wages and safer work environments.

Alleged Scammer Ashley Grayson Faces Indictment After Murder For Hire Plot

Alleged Scammer Ashley Grayson Faces Indictment After Murder For Hire Plot

Ashley Massengill Grayson and her husband Joshua Grayson have been formally charged by the United States (that is the FBI) in connection to the murder-for-hire plot that the two allegedly hatched. They are facing charges of racketeering and murder under the RICO Act of 1970 and the expectation from many is that the pair will end up spending time behind bars as RICO charges are notoriously difficult to beat, especially without an attorney that adopts an aggressive strategy to challenge the mountain of evidence that will undoubtedly be collected by the federal government. In September 2020 it appeared Ashley Massengill Grayson was a rising star in the entrepreneurial space following her claim of making a million dollars in less than an hour as we previously reported.

According to Yahoo News, a woman named Sherell accused Massengill Grayson of scamming her out of $2,000 and claimed that the million-dollar figure she touted was greatly exaggerated. Sherell also claimed that Massengill got her money from a worker’s compensation settlement and not her actual business. Several other users also claimed that they too were scammed by Massengill Grayson and her husband. Massengill Grayson herself later confirmed that her fortunes changed following a workers comp settlement after she lost a finger working on an assembly line.

On April 4, 2023 Ashley Massengill Grayson petitioned the United States District Court in Oxford Mississippi to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought by Derricka Harwell. In the court documents, it is revealed that FBI agents informed Harwell that Massengill Grayson “on or around” September 26, 2022, that the influencer had attempted to hire a contract killer i.e. a hitman to kill her.

As a result of this very serious threat to her life, the FBI requested and then subsequently placed Harwell under their protection moving her from her home. Harwell makes a number of claims in the lawsuit, chief among them that Massengill Grayson sent her harassing and threatening direct messages on Facebook Messenger, Grayson made an attempt to doxx Harwell, and in an attempt to cover up the murder-for-hire investigation Massengill Grayson is attempting to sue the multiple victims of her alleged murder for hire plot for defamation.

Grayson alleged that she had to get a restraining order placed on Harwell due to defamatory remarks Harwell made on her Facebook page, a post that went viral. The court ruled that there was no merit for Grayson’s motion to dismiss Harwell’s suit and that the two sides of the story are so far apart that another court would have to decide which one of them was telling the truth and which one was lying.

“Ultimately, however, this court suspects that the competing allegations made by Ms. Grayson and Ms. Harwell will prove to be so irreconcilable with each other that it will be left to a jury to determine who is lying and who is telling the truth. This court offers no opinion on this matter, since its role in this case is not to serve as the trier of fact, but merely to determine whether triable fact issues exist. At this juncture, it rather strongly appears that they do.”

Legendary Rapper Da Brat Gives Birth To First Child

49-year-old rapper Da Brat is over the moon following the birth of her son, True Legend Harris-Dupart as she told People magazine a few days after giving birth: “I can’t believe he came out of me! Feels like a dream. He’s perfect in every way, this journey has been more amazing than we could’ve ever imagined.” Da Brat and her wife Jesseca Harris-Dupart welcomed a baby boy on July 6, 2023. In an interview with People, the star revealed she was a little scared in the beginning, but her wife was able to coax her into carrying the child. Jesseca says part of what made her want Da Brat to carry the child was seeing how nurturing her wife is “We had a little tug-o-war in the beginning… but I felt like she (Da Brat) should have the experience, she is so nurturing.” The two currently star in a reality series on WeTV, Brat Loves Judy and prior to this pregnancy, the two had suffered a miscarriage.

The couple used In Vitro Fertilization to conceive the baby, taking an egg from Jesseca Harris-Dupart and sperm from an anonymous donor. In March, the couple did a gender reveal for the baby where it was revealed that the child was a boy. Recently the pair shared photos of a Minion-themed baby shower, calling the baby their little minion to various social media platforms. Before this success, Da Brat had to have a surgery to remove fibroids and polyps prior to the surgery to transfer Jesseca’s fertilized egg into her body. According to the University of Michigan, fibroids often affect Black women at much higher rates and with more severity than they affect white women. The exact reasons for these disparities remain unclear. Black women usually have to get invasive procedures for benign diseases, such as Da Brat’s surgery, something that researcher Erica Marsh says is concerning. “Our research suggests that many women are likely undiagnosed. Fibroids are a prevalent condition that cause significant distress, and those who live with it often feel isolated, alone and in pain. It’s not acceptable for women to suffer and not know their options. We need to improve uterine fibroid awareness and education among all populations.”

Da Brat came out as a lesbian in 2020, the rapper has continually expressed that she has found nothing but love and acceptance since and credits her wife as a major inspiration. “When I came out I was like ‘Damn, if I knew it was going to be this nice and loving I’d have probably come out a long time ago!’ Most importantly, [I came out] because of her inspiring me, and wanting to scream it from the mountaintops that I found somebody that I am totally in love with and I don’t want to hide it anymore.”

Janelle Monáe Shows Her Lady Parts During Essence Festival Performance

Janelle Monáe Shows Her Lady Parts During Essence Festival Performance

Janelle Monáe ate up her performance at New Orleans’ Essence Festival. On Friday, June 30, the 37-year-old made a controversial choice on stage to lift her top to show her right breast to the audience as she sang. The memorable moment was met with both praise for her boldness and backlash for the exposing move.

Monáe was dressed in a black and white string bikini top, matching shorts, and a hat for the portion of the set. The Kansas City-born singer flashed her breast as she sang her song “Yoga” for the Essence Fest crowd. She piped, “Sometimes I’m peachy, and sometimes I’m vulgar. Even when I’m sleeping, I got one eye open. You cannot police me, so get off my areola!”

The singer’s nipple was covered with pink tape, and the playful moment sparked debate online after Essence’s official event. Twitter shared a short clip of the performance. Captioned, “YOU CANNOT POLICE @JanelleMonae.” The post was retweeted by another user who wrote: “Unnecessary on so many levels and for so many reasons.”

Notably, 2 Live Crew’s front runner, raunchy Uncle Luke, commented: “What is this girl going through? She’s never been out there like this.. is it a midlife crisis?”

Despite Monáe’s image being based on body positivity and being comfortable with one’s own sexuality, the discourse on Twitter continued.

Buy Black New Bedford To Host Event Featuring Children Vendors

Buy Black New Bedford To Host Event Featuring Children Vendors

Buy Black New Bedford is hosting its second annual Dream Makers Market on July 13, 2023, featuring all children and teen vendors. The event, according to founder and director Justina Perry is “a signature vendor market featuring all children and teen vendors.” The aim of the event is to encourage Black children and teenagers to participate and thrive in a global marketplace. Jonathan Felix, Assistant to the Executive Director at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater New Bedford describes the aims of the event in a press release: “America is a mixed market/capitalist economy, but few children are offered the opportunity to learn and apply market principles at home or in school. Many become playthings of powerful economic forces we do not understand as we were never taught. The Dream Makers Market provides a  unique learning opportunity for children to dream, strategize, market, network, and learn basic principles to thrive in a global competitive marketplace which America still leads…In my 30 years of experience in education, this is the first time I’ve encountered something like this.”

According to Herald News, Buy Black New Bedford was birthed in 2020 as a free community platform dedicated to discovering highlighting, and promoting Black-owned businesses within the South Coast region of Massachusets. The group hosts year-round events featuring hand-selected, diverse groups of vendors and often works in concert with local businesses and organizations like the New Bedford Boys and Girls Club, First Citizens Federal Credit Union, and Perry’s Oshun Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health. Perry describes this year’s focus in a statement provided to Herald News. “This year we’re hosting a space devoted to uplifting 20 local, talented, young creatives…Our partner organizations for this year’s market are Our Sisters’ School and Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford. E For All Southcoast is back to do what they do exceptionally well in offering business training while First Citizens Federal Credit Union offers an interactive financial workshop to our vendors.”

According to the Brookings Institute, Black-Owned businesses saw a significant boom during the pandemic of 2019-2020. Some of this has been attributed to the loss of jobs as well as multiple rounds of stimulus checks which combined to create a high rate of Black businesses in middle-class Black neighborhoods. Predictably, PPP loans were not made available to Black business owners at the same rate they were for white business owners. This meant that they used the funds available to them, generally stimulus checks, to create and sustain their new businesses. Historically, that has always been the case, access to lines of credit and capital has generally been limited for Black people in America. This means that Black business owners have had to be creative with how they procured funding, often relying on personal credit lines or funds to finance their ventures. Buy Black New Bedford fits into this landscape both in terms of being a Black-owned venture and as a connective hub dedicated to connecting Black businesses both to each other and the larger community. According to their website, Buy Black New Bedford has been successful at amplifying the voices of Black women, fundraising for local organizations, and connecting local businesses with opportunities.

Viral Videos: Deaf TikToker Shares Hilarious Childhood Experiences

Deaf TikToker Scarlet May has gone viral on social media for sharing her unique experiences growing up deaf. In a series of videos posted on July 5, May told her fans about how it is arguing with deaf siblings and how to “shut a deaf person up.”

She began her first video by saying, “If you want to know how deaf siblings argue, that is how we do it. So growing up me and my brother were both deaf. Anytime somebody was to start an argument, they’re gonna immediately finish the argument. Cause when he comes up to me and says his piece and gets his point across, then I’m ready to say mine, he closes his eyes. Now I can’t even hit him with what I gotta say.”

The TikToker described her usual response to her brother’s antics. “Anytime that happens, I’m going to sit there, and I’m gonna have my arms crossed, and Imma wait for him to open his eyes. Then as soon as he opens his eyes again and he sees me ready to go, boom, he shuts his eyes again. Not only did he shut his eyes, but then he proceeded to like walk out of the room and like touch things as he goes and just exits. That irks me so bad y’all, and I would’ve thrown some hands, but he was way bigger than me. When I tell you we still argue like that to this day, we will probably be in like our 80s still doing that,” May said.

The Black TikToker’s other video, posted in quick succession to the first, described an experience that she had when she was at a sleepover when she was younger. In both videos, she signed, included subtitles, and spoke to make sure it was inclusive for everyone who watched.

“If you ever wanna know how to shut a deaf person up, this is how you do it. When I was younger, I was at a sleepover with like all my friends, and we was arguing over this boy, right? And we’re all deaf, so hands were being thrown ’cause we’re all signing when we’re arguing.”

She hilariously told her viewers how her friend stopped them all from fighting.

“We’re all just going on and on like back and forth, and the girl who’s hosting the sleepover is like, ‘come on guys, like let’s be for real,’ she was like ‘let’s just move on,’ and nobody is listening to it. Literally, our hands were like out there like boom boom boom, and then all of a sudden, it’s dark. She cut the lights off. It was dead silent, literally. We couldn’t even argue because we could even see each other. Soon as the lights clicked back on, we just dropped the whole thing y’all cause that was embarrassing. Honestly, I couldn’t even be mad at her cause, like, d***. She really got me there.”

WNBA Legend Nikki McCray-Penson Dies At 51 Years Old

WNBA Legend Nikki McCray-Penson Dies At 51 Years Old

One of the original Women’s Dream Team members, Nikki McCray-Penson died on July 7, 2023, following a lengthy battle with breast cancer. At this time, there has been no official cause of death determined, but she has been fighting the disease since 2013. As reported by ESPN, McCray-Penson was a basketball star at the University of Tennessee before playing in the now-defunct American Basketball League before moving on to the WNBA. McCray-Penson is remembered by many in the women’s basketball family as a warm and generous spirit, current WNBA players admired the way that she would check in with them and often tell them how proud of them she was. Dawn Staley, McCray-Penson’s 1996 Olympic Games teammate, added her to her coaching staff at South Carolina in 2008 where she remained until 2017. In 2013, while coaching the Gamecocks, McCray-Penson was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Later that year her cancer went into remission so she was able to remain on staff. It was at South Carolina that she would coach future two-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson who fondly remembered her in a Tweet: “Heart hurts like crazy over this one…Such a fighter and a warrior with the sweetest gentle soul! Coach McCray you’ve helped me in many, many ways and you were a true gift from God! Truly will be missed! No more suffering, no more pain! God got a good one.”

During her playing career McCray-Penson developed a reputation as a hard-nosed defender, routinely tasked with guarding the opposing team’s best player during her runs with the Women’s National team. She was hand-selected in 2000 by then-President Bill Clinton to become a member of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. McCray-Penson was also invited by the Library of Congress to be their keynote speaker for Women’s History Month in 1999. In 1996. McCray-Penson started her professional career with the ABL’s Colombus Quest and over her ten-year career in the WNBA, she played for the Washington Mystics, Indiana Fever, Phoenix Mercury, San Antonio Stars (Las Vegas Aces), and Chicago Sky.

Truly, the women’s basketball community is a little bit dimmer after the passing of such a beloved figure and pioneer in its game. McCray-Penson leaves behind a 10-year-old son, Thomas Penson Jr in addition to her husband, Thomas Penson. The entire community of women’s basketball poured out tributes to McCray-Penson from her alma-mater to the WNBA itself. Tennesse head coach Kellie Harper released a statement: “Our hearts are broken as we mourn the loss of a beloved Lady Vol…We also offer our love and sincere condolences to her family, friends and colleagues across the country. Nikki had a bright and loving personality and touched the lives of everyone she met. Her kind and genuine spirit will be missed.” The WNBA released a statement reading: “Our hearts are heavy as we learn of the passing of Nikki McCray-Penson…Our thoughts and prayers are with Nikki’s family and loved ones at this time.”

Detroit City Council Seeks To Establish More Gun-Free Zones In The City

According to PBS, the Detroit City Council is making big moves to attempt to stop persistent gun violence in the Michigan city. Following an April weekend that had six separate shooting events, Council members demanded a significant change to a longstanding state law that would allow individual counties to establish “gun-free zones” in their cities at their discretion.

The seemingly bold move was prompted by the increasing danger associated with formally popular Detroit areas due to gun violence. Gun-free zones seek to reduce firearm deaths in high-risk places drastically. They could involve things such as hospitals, churches, restaurants, and courthouses. Despite what the name implies, the current laws surrounding gun-free zones don’t restrict all guns in the space, as open carrying is still allowed. Concealed carrying, however, would not be permitted

Detroit police have been enforcing a curfew for unaccompanied minors and requesting people to leave their guns at home. Still, Councilmembers are hopeful that a law would be able to implement better what police are trying to do.

The proposals to the Detroit City Council were presented on May 16, and they read: “Resolution 19.13, which the council passed in an 8-1 vote, showed support for Democratic Sen. Jeff Irwin’s Senate Bill 208, which would allow municipalities to prohibit the possession of firearms on their property.”

“Resolution 19.14, which the council passed in a much narrower 5-4 vote after some debate, endorsed the idea of gun-free zones in specific public downtown areas of Detroit where large crowds gather for big events, including the city’s riverfront area.”

Democratic Senator Jeff Irwin explained, “[The bill] proposes to restore the authority that local governments used to have to maintain security in their buildings and on their properties. The current law, a broad preemption law, prevents local governments from making any rules.” Irwin added, “People can conceal carry [and] people can open carry [firearms] in public hearings where there might be a tense conversation among neighbors about zoning or about police accountability, about anything. In some places, people attempt to bring weapons in to discourage others from participating in their democracy. That’s really wrong.”

Irwin also recognized that the new proposals would allow cities to decide what’s best for those who live there. The ordinance would allow more than the current state capitols, private businesses, and federal courts to designate gun-free zones. It would turn over the current restriction on local government units from doing so.

Former Amazon Manager Gets 16 Years For Stealing Almost $10M From Company

Former Amazon Manager Gets 16 Years For Stealing Almost $10M From Company

A Former Amazon manager in Atlanta, Georgia has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison for a “scheme” that stole nearly $10 million from the online retail giant.

Kayricka Wortham was sentenced for stealing more than $9.4 million from Amazon.com while employed as a manager for the company, according to the DOJ. Wortham, along with six others, are accused of running a “brazen fraud scheme” that used “fake vendors and fictitious invoices,” to strip their employer of millions.

“She then committed new crimes while on bond, even creating a fake dismissal document purporting to be from the court and that included the forged signature of the Chief U.S. District Judge, all for the purpose of misleading a franchising company about the status of her criminal charges,” U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan said.

“Her prison sentence recognizes the magnitude of her fraud and serves to protect the integrity of our courts and justice system.”

The sentence comes after Wortham pled guilty in December along with another Atlanta resident, WSB-TV reports. Wortham and Demetrius Hines of Smyrna, Georgia were accused of using their managerial positions at Amazon to submit fake invoices for fake vendors, which led to the company paying about $9.4 million to bank accounts run by Wortham and the co-conspirators she recruited.

Wortham, who was deemed the “leader of the scheme,” and co-conspirator Brittany Hudson used the money to pay for real estate and luxury cars, including a $1 million home in Smyrna, a 2019 Lamborghini Urus, a 2021 Dodge Durango, a 2022 Tesla Model X, a 2018 Porsche Panamera, and a Kawasaki ZX636 motorcycle.

Authorities have said the sentence reflects how “seriously” they took their crimes.

“This individual stole millions from a business that employed her – exploiting not only their trust, but our nation’s financial systems,” Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Atlanta Field Office Steven R. Baisel said.

“Thanks to the hard work of our partners in the U.S. Attorney’s office, her sentence reflects the seriousness of her crimes and sends a message that this kind of fraudulent activity will not be tolerated.”
