Working Under the Bad Boy Banner Helped Henry ‘Hen Roc’ Polanco Rise in the Spirits Industry

Working Under the Bad Boy Banner Helped Henry ‘Hen Roc’ Polanco Rise in the Spirits Industry

Henry Polanco, known in the entertainment and spirits industry as “Hen Roc,” started his long career working with the man behind the Bad Boy brand. Like Sean Combs, Hen Roc was able to use the hustle and experience he obtained to elevate his work in the music industry and now in the spirits game.

BLACK ENTERPRISE spoke to Hen Roc about working with hip-hop visionary “Diddy” and how that experience impacted his quest to be the best and helped him succeed in music and now spirits.

How does a college computer science major become a successful executive within the entertainment and spirits industry?

Honestly, my heart wasn’t in computer science, so I decided to follow my true passion and pursue music. I didn’t know where I would land or exactly what I would do, but I knew that I needed to do something that I loved and that I had a true passion for music and entertainment.

How did you use your experience working at Bad Boy Records for 15 years alongside Sean Combs to do well in the spirits industry?

I started working at Bad Boy Worldwide at a very young age. I worked hard, listened, watched, and wanted to learn everything there was to know about the music business. Over the course of 15 years, I not only learned the music but also the business of music.

I was surrounded by the best of the best and wanted to be among that elite group of music industry professionals who shaped and preserved the culture, so I worked extremely hard and did whatever it took. I worked across as many positions as possible, so I could diversify my skill set and establish my name.

Because I wore multiple hats at “Bad Boy University,” as some of us called it, that allowed me to grow personally and professionally. I was laser-focused on winning, so when I graduated, I took some of the same principles that allowed me to successfully navigate my career in music and applied them to jumpstart my career in spirits.

What led you to take your talents to the Hennessy brand?

It was all about timing. Working at Bad Boy was an amazing and unforgettable experience that I would never change, but after 15 years there, I felt like I had hit a plateau.

I wasn’t looking for new opportunities at the time but was open to new challenges. I craved growth opportunities and wanted to learn new skills, so when I got the call from my dear friend Aria Wright, who was associate vice president of the agency of record for Moet Hennessy U.S.A., I followed through and accepted the position as key account manager for New York. The rest is history.

What attributes are necessary to navigate the entertainment and spirits industries successfully, and how much does an entrepreneurial mindset help?

In my opinion, in order to win in spirits, you need to have, at the very minimum, basic sales and marketing knowledge and skills. You need to learn quickly, embody a teamwork mindset, and be able to communicate effectively with others. It’s also helpful to understand the culture of your target audience, be agile, and know how to adapt so that you can make smart decisions under pressure.

Most importantly, you need to be creative and know how to build and maintain relationships because relationships are critical to gaining access and opening doors as you move up the ladder in your career.

Treat every relationship as a business relationship and never deviate from that.

You are in your second year as New York state manager for Camus Cognac. How do you use experience from the nightlife scene to make a brand with longevity matter, specifically to the urban audience?

I was hired by Camus Cognac because of my spirits experience and my relationships that extend beyond spirits into music, film, fashion, sports, politics, art, and even community development. Because my relationships are endless, I’m able to authentically tap into new audiences for Camus Cognac that will stimulate trial and keep the brand relevant and at the top of their mind.

As an entrepreneur who has worked with different brands throughout your career, what advice would you give someone who aspires to be successful?

Read, listen, and learn. ALWAYS LISTEN MORE THAN YOU SPEAK! Be open to new ideas, and don’t block traditional practices because that is how we got here! Respect the foundation because there is significant value in knowing how things were done before technology revolutionized the world.

Develop your own style and challenge yourself every step of the way. Be disciplined, believe in yourself, lead with integrity, establish and practice good habits, and find ways to bridge gaps that exist between generations and cultures.

What’s next for Hen Roc?

My personal goals will always include elevating my family and leaving a legacy for them. I will continue to strive for personal and professional growth as I search for a better version of myself. Professionally, I look forward to refreshing the roadmap that takes Camus Cognac to the next luxury level. I want to continue to open doors for new talent and breed fresh ideas for many years to come.

Survey: Black Business Owners Among Those with Average Medical Bills of $18,000

Survey: Black Business Owners Among Those with Average Medical Bills of $18,000

Medical costs have surged across the country for years and have been a major burden for small business owners overall, but even more drastically for Black entrepreneurs.

Top findings from the recent Intuit QuickBooks Black Business Health Survey showed some 27% of Black-owned businesses called their existing financial health of business “poor” or “terrible.” That is over double the 11% of other business owners.

Much of the problem appears to stem from COVID-19. Some 41% of Blacks quizzed said their finances diminished during the pandemic. The same amount is now in financial debt due to healthcare costs. Plus,   24% of Black respondents have no health insurance. That figure is a whopping, more than double the 13% of others surveyed.

Researchers questioned some 4,000 business owners, employees, and self-employed people nationally.

Further, roughly 40% of Black respondents reported they had medical debt costing thousands of dollars. More precisely, those surveyed showed Blacks, on average, had $18,000 in medical debt. Some 37% of Blacks questioned believed they would be unable to pay the medical bills during their lifetime.

While observers say past-due medical bills won’t cause a Black company to fail, it could create repercussions for the owner. Consider an unpaid bill could weaken a business owner’s credit score and make it harder to gain a small business loan or other types of credit to help finance the enterprise’s growth.

To make matters worse, medical bills and insufficient healthcare coverage can add to the list of many challenges Black entrepreneurs already face, like accessing capital to grow, having fewer business resources than their non-diverse rivals, and still rebounding from COVID-19.

Eric Woodson, founder and CEO of The Kool Source, an Atlanta-based digital marketing firm, told Forbes he is convinced health insurance barriers affect Black and white small business owners similarly. He added that chiefly occurred during the pandemic when rates rose from 10% to 20%.

According to Forbes, Woodson worked with a benefits broker and signed up for a plan before the renewal date to bypass price increases. Still, the news outlet reported, “strategies like Woodson’s might save business owners money and improve access to better benefits, but they won’t fully address racial disparities in access to and quality of care, like those reported in the survey.”

However, the survey had some uplifting news. Most Blacks remain optimistic despite the hurdles. Some 54% foresee their finances improving this year. And they reported achieving their financial and health goals as two priorities respectively for 2022.

Snoop Dogg’s Sexual Assault Case Dismissed By Accuser

Earlier this year, a lawsuit was filed against the new owner of Death Row Records, Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus Jr., accusing him of sexually assaulting a young woman nearly 10 years ago. Last week, that accuser suddenly dropped the lawsuit against the entertainer.

According to USA Today, attorneys for the young woman who made the accusations against Snoop and his associate, Bishop Don Magic Juan, filed a notice of dismissal with California’s Central District Court last Wednesday. The plaintiff asked that the court dismiss the lawsuit “in its entirety.” The next day, U.S. district judge George H. Wu ordered the dismissal as requested.

There was no documented reason why the plaintiff chose to move to dismiss the lawsuit originally filed on Feb. 9.

“It is not surprising that the plaintiff dismissed her complaint against the defendants. Her complaint was full of false allegations and deficiencies,” a representative for the Gin and Juice rapper said in a written statement to USA Today.

In February, the woman identified as Jane Doe claimed that the alleged act occurred after she went to a Snoop Dogg show in May 2013.

According to the lawsuit, the woman and a friend of hers went back to Snoop’s studio with him and Donald Campbell, also known as Bishop Don Magic Juan.

The woman alleged that she asked Juan to take her home after her friend left the studio, but he brought her back to his house. Juan supposedly convinced her to go with him to Snoop’s studio despite her not wanting to. She stated that she did not feel well, and after getting to the studio, she went to the bathroom. She then alleges Snoop came into the bathroom where he told her to place his genitals in her mouth and later masturbated on her before leaving the bathroom.

“Defendant Snoop Dogg’s actions were sexually predatorial. Plaintiff found herself thinking about her job security if she displeased Defendant Snoop Dogg. Plaintiff felt pressured by Defendant Snoop Dogg due to his dominance, and his position of power over her, including his ability to hire and fire her and ensure that she would never be hired in his industry again.”

Saint Augustine’s University Celebrates Its First HBCU Women’s Rowing Team In The Country

Saint Augustine’s University celebrates a historical win for current students and future generations to come. In its 155-year history, the University has formed the first HBCU women’s rowing team in the country, ABC 11 reports.

The pioneering team of five scholar-athletes, approved and certified by the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA), has already begun making a name for themselves. Since the summer of 2021, they have already participated in virtual competitions and are set to compete against other schools in live water competitions as early as Fall 2022.

“ACRA is proud to do whatever we can to support our sport’s growth and encourage SAU and other HBCUs to join our organization,” said ACRA president Cam Brown in a statement, according to row2k.

“We have been working with Dr. Janas and St. Augustine’s for over a year to help them where we can with contacts, resources, information, and equipment when possible—and it is exciting to see the progress they have made and see the sport continue to grow into areas that are underrepresented.”

Dr. Mark Janas, an SAU School of Business, Management & Technology professor, coaches the indoor training sessions and virtual competitions, and he played an instrumental part in launching the new club. He plans to expand the current team by adding five students.

“We’ve had rowing in mind since the inception of our virtual sports program and suite that opened in early 2021,” Janas said. “‘Virtual sports’ in our definition are distinct from ‘esports’ in that they are real sports that require the equivalent or similar skill and fitness as the ‘real sport’ counterpart, but they can be done virtually.”

Howard University sponsored a rowing program in the 1960s as the only HBCU to do so. The origins of the Howard team motivated SAU and Dr. Janas to introduce the first women’s team to the HBCU space.

“Rowing, like cycling, hasn’t traditionally been part of the HBCU experience, and we want to change that,” Janas added. “Howard is one of the elite HBCUs in the country, and we’ve definitely used their story to help the cause.”

Team member Mikahya Hill—a junior at Saint Augustine’s— is not only excited for her team to improve with each race but to inspire other Black girls who want to row.

“I wanted to be a part of that type of movement and change a predominantly male white sport [with] a little bit of melanin magic, to have Black girls doing it,” she shared, according to NewsOne. “I want to do this so we can inspire other Black girls at other schools who want to be rowers.”

The SAU women’s rowing team is accepting donations here.

Singer Ayana George on Her Broadway Journey and Role as Katherine Jackson in MJ: The Musical

Singer Ayana George on Her Broadway Journey and Role as Katherine Jackson in MJ: The Musical

Ayana George is a walking testimony that it is never too late to pursue and manifest the life you want and to live out your dreams. At 50, George is stepping out of the background and into a lifelong dream. The songstress made her Broadway debut in MJ: The Musical, playing the role of Katherine Jackson (Michael Jackson’s mother).

Soon to be Mrs. Jackson in real-life, the newly engaged Bronx native’s textured voice and serene presence has led her to worldwide stages as a supporting vocalist for artists including John Legend, Jazmine Sullivan, Jennifer Lopez, Chaka Khan, Bishop Hezekiah Walker, Donnie McClurkin, and Kirk Franklin, to name a few.

BLACK ENTERPRISE caught up with George to chat about her journey, the road to Broadway, and how her faith has brought her to her mountaintop experience.

How does it feel to make your Broadway debut at 50?

SURREAL. This is something I envisioned as a child, and now, after the ups and downs and the ins and outs of life, I am HERE—literally, in awe every day. It also feels right on time. Not a minute too late, nor a moment too soon. I’m right on schedule, and I believe there’s more to come.

What was the biggest challenge taking on the role of matriarch Katherine Jackson?

I am playing Katherine Jackson, one of the most iconic matriarchs of our time. I had to wrap my head around THAT first! Mrs. Jackson is a beautiful blend of both soft and strong. Making sure I could portray that balance effectively, I might say, was the biggest challenge.

How has your faith prepared you and played a role in your career?

Even before I knew how to pray, I would sing to God. That was how I communicated with him because I felt singing was the best I could offer to Him. It was the gift He gave me that I wanted to give back. As I matured, I believed my voice was meant for more, so that is what I went after. Things didn’t go as planned, but it was my faith in God that gave me the determination to keep going. Because I knew HE had a plan—one I didn’t expect but am so thankful for. Now, I’m here expecting more of the unexpected and preparing myself for it by faith and by doing the work. Some scriptures have helped me to remain focused and encouraged throughout my journey. I now know there is greatness within me, and I am right where I belong.

None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who helped get you to where you are?

I’m happy to say there are a few people. The late Schon-Jomel Crawford called me into my first studio session singing background. The late Ron Grant opened the door for my first experience as a recording artist. Jason Michael Webb, who introduced me to the world of Broadway, and Christopher Wheeldon, who allowed me to make my Broadway debut. The level of gratitude I have for these beautiful souls is beyond words.

What advice would you give to someone who may want to give up because their dreams haven’t manifested yet?

I believe our dreams are God’s desires for us that He allows us to get a glimpse of. With that in mind, what a tragedy it would be to give up on that. Giving up is an express train to failure. You’ll never know what can happen unless you try…and KEEP trying. If one way isn’t working, find another. See yourself succeeding even before it happens. Our minds are so extremely powerful. What we feed it is what will manifest. So, mind your mind. Think well of yourself. Speak well to yourself. Do not compare your path to others, and understand this is a journey, not a race. Fall in love with the process. And always, always go back to the glimpse.

HBCU Hampton University Dissolves All Student Balances For Spring 2022 Semester

HBCU Hampton University Dissolves All Student Balances For Spring 2022 Semester

The COVID-19 pandemic is still the cause of financial hardships for many families, including those carrying the load of paying for college expenses.

Hampton University, an HBCU in Virginia, has jumped at the opportunity to provide financial and economic relief from looming costs.

Hampton University’s President, Dr. William R. Harvey, announced that the University would be dissolving all outstanding student account balances for the Spring 2022 semester and will not increase tuition, fees, room and board for the upcoming new year.

“In keeping with the University’s efforts to help our students, there will be no increase in tuition, fees, room and board for the 2022-2023 academic year,” said Dr. Harvey, according to WTKR.

“In addition, on behalf of the University, I am pleased to announce that all outstanding balances for the Spring 2022 semester will be erased.  We hope that this action will continue to assist our students and their families at our Home by the Sea.”

Last August, the University made a similar announcement to alleviate financial burdens for undergraduate students. HU paid all outstanding balances owed by continuing undergraduate students enrolled at the end of the spring 2021 semester.

To help assist with last year’s costs, Hampton also issued a $200 book scholarship to all enrolled students for the Spring 2022 semester.

In April 2020, Dr. and Mrs. Harvey made a $100,000 matching donation, which provided each student on campus $100 to assist with travel costs. In May, the University sent direct deposits to each 2020 and 2021 graduate with a federal student loan of $500 toward repayment of that loan. Students who did not have student loans received reimbursements of $150.

According to WAVY, the University also announced last year that its campus minimum wage would increase to $15-per hour in the new year. In addition, all faculty and staff were gifted an end-of-the-year bonus of $200.

“The holiday season is a time of sharing. In that spirit, I am giving every Hampton University employee an Appreciation Bonus of $200 as a Christmas gift, and the University is increasing the minimum wage from $13 an hour to $15 an hour, effective January 1, 2022,” Harvey previously announced. “It is my hope that the Appreciation Bonus and the wage increase will be beneficial to you and your family.”

Louisiana House Passes Bill Exempting Police Mugshots Until Conviction

Louisiana House Passes Bill Exempting Police Mugshots Until Conviction

The State of Louisiana could soon ban the release of mugshots of residents who have been arrested but not convicted of a crime after the state House approved a proposal Tuesday.

NBC-affiliate KPVI reports House Bill 729 will keep most mugshots from public record until a person is found guilty of a crime.

The bill was sponsored by Democratic Rep. Royce Duplessis and passed the state House by a 75-22 vote. However, it still has to be approved by the state Senate and signed by Gov. John Bel Edwards.

Under the bill, if a person is a fugitive, or if law enforcement deems that person to be an imminent threat or danger, their mugshot can be shown. Language in the bill also states a court hearing will be held for a judge to determine if a mugshot will be released to the public.

While the bill may sound good to some, several state lawmakers were quick to attack the bill. Republican Rep. Raymond Crews raised questions about whether other aspects of arrest records, including the name and sex of an individual, will be deemed prejudicial.

Rep. Mike Johnson, also a Republican, “worried this bill will shield the public from information that might impact public safety,” according to The Center Square and cited law enforcement saying the release of a mugshot can lead to additional suspects or victims.

Duplessis argued back, saying the benefit of publishing a mugshot “does not outweigh the harm that is currently happening in society where these photos are published for someone who … did not commit an offense, or they’re charged with something much less severe.”

The New Orleans Democrat also cited a federal policy that withholds the release of a mugshot until conviction and noted many newspapers across the country have adopted guidelines on whether to print mugshots before a conviction.

Others argued the bill needs additional work, saying it needs to be tailored further to allow for the release of mugshots under more circumstances, including child sex offenders, violent crimes, or public officials.

The bill will move to the Senate for consideration.

Afrozons Founder Sheila O. Brings Black Travelers Around the Globe to Dubai

Black travelers experienced a first-class taste of Dubai without the typical cost

Hundreds of people from around the world flocked to Dubai early last month for the Afrozons Dubai Soundoff, a premier travel experience powered by the Board of Dubai Tourism and Afrozons. The one-of-a-kind voyage included tours of Dubai, a welcome reception, a desert safari party, access to the World Expo 2020, and a concert featuring legendary Nigerian Afrobeat artist D’Banj.

Afrozons founder Sheila Okonji-Ashinze, a British-Nigerian media personality affectionately known as “Sheila O.,” says she partnered with the Dubai Tourism Board to curate a trip that would provide Afrobeat lovers across the globe with a first-class taste of Dubai without the typical cost.

“We were able to pull off over 500 people coming out to Dubai with us and having a great time,” she told BLACK ENTERPRISE.

The Afrozons Dubai Soundoff comes five years after Sheila O. launched the Afrozons radio show on Power 92.3 Chicago in 2017, becoming the first international female personality to host an Afrobeats show on a major U.S. FM station. The show, which is now nationally syndicated on SiriusXM HURVoices Channel 141 in addition to other markets, was created as a platform to help connect Black people around the diaspora. In a statement, RCA Records’ co-head of promotion Sam Selolwane praised Afrozons for bringing Afrobeats to the U.S.

“Afrozons has been ahead of the curve introducing Afrobeats to this side of the world for quite some time,” she said. “Sheila’s dedication to the artists and genre has helped catapult these artists and helped turn them into the household names we know today.”

The Soundoff is not only an extension of the Afrozons brand, but it also served as a new vehicle to unite people of African descent around the sound of the motherland.

“Fusing everyone together was just mind-blowing,” said Sheila O., noting that attendees traveled from Africa, the United States, the Middle East, and Europe. “All of us just meeting together in Dubai to have a good time with one agenda in mind—which is to bridge that gap—that was, for me, the highlight of it all.”

Several American media personalities made appearances during the six-night trip, including Big Tigger, Texas radio host DJ Bay Bay, and TV host Loni Love. They were joined by radio hosts from Nigeria, Angola, Tanzania, and Zambia.

“I’m so delighted that I’m part of this journey representing Zambia, of course, and also representing Kwithu FM  93.3,” said Chichi Daisy Lups, a Zambian media personality, actress, and radio host. “This interaction is bridging the gap between the United States and the diaspora and Africa,” she continued. “Afrobeats has really just broken the barriers.”

While most attendees purchased discounted travel packages, dozens of lucky winners received complimentary flight tickets, hotel accommodations, and access to the Soundoff activities through lottery sweepstakes held by local radio stations. One fortunate winner, Jason Hammond, a bus driver from Los Angeles, California, said winning a free trip to Dubai was surreal.

“My favorite part was the sand dunes and the camel ride,” he told BE.  Beyond the exciting adventures, Hammond also enjoyed meeting different people and touring Dubai. “The architecture—I really was amazed by that,” said Hammond. “That’s what caught my attention.”

Afrozons founder Sheila O. and Issam Kazim, the CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing

Issam Kazim, the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing CEO, gladly welcomed the global Afrobeat community to the “City of Gold.”

“It’s a proud moment to have Afrozons here in Dubai, celebrating here with us in a city that [has] over 200 different nationalities that call Dubai home,” he told BE.

Tolu Oniru, a Nigerian radio and talk show host popularly known as Toolz, was thrilled to participate as a presenter at the Afrozons Dubai Soundoff.

“One of the things I love doing most is traveling. You create so many amazing memories,” she said. “I think Black people need to travel more, and particularly African American people need to leave the States and the Caribbean and just go to different parts of the world.”

Kenyan media personality Mwalimu Rachel agreed, encouraging “Black people around the diaspora to travel [and] travel to luxurious places. [We need to] normalize luxury, but in this case, affordable luxury,” she said.

Rachel, the head presenter at NRG Radio, also urged Kenyans to prioritize traveling abroad. “Back at home, if we are to take vacations, for instance, it’s very short vacations like one, two, [or] three days, and we just go to the coastal area of our country,” she said. “[We] don’t plan well for bigger, more luxurious vacations because we’re always thinking about the money, like ‘oh my God. It’s going to cost me so much.’”

However, Rachel stressed the benefits of taking a break from daily routines to expand your horizons and give your mind and body the opportunity to rest and recharge. “I think we’re overworked, and we forget about the importance of travel.”

Afrozons founder Sheila O. and Sheila Eldridge, the CEO of Miles Ahead Entertainment and Broadcasting

Media and radio veteran Sheila Eldridge, the CEO of Miles Ahead Entertainment and Broadcasting and the founder of the Mocha Podcast Network, applauded Sheila O. for bringing people around the world to Dubai.

“That’s the first time that [media] personalities from around the globe and, of course, the diaspora of Africa have come together for something like that to celebrate the music, and to celebrate the art form, and to just network,” she said. “The fact that Afrozons was a platform that did that [and] brought it together is pretty amazing.”

“Sheila O. and Afrozons has really been a champion of bringing Afrobeats music to the airwaves here in the United States and bridging the gap of the music from Africa to here in the States,” Elderidge continued. “Kudos for her for being a trailblazer in bringing the music to the United States and having a nationally syndicated platform.”

During an emotional speech at the desert safari party, Sheila O. described working with the Dubai Tourism Board to bring Black travelers together as a huge milestone in her career. “I’m a girl born in Lagos, Nigeria. I grew up in London. Yes, I live in Chicago, but Dubai is a dream come true.”

However, more than that, Elderidge says the Afrozons Dubai Soundoff marks a new phase in the Afrobeat movement.

“Sheila is a pioneer,” she said. “She understands and sees how important that connection is for us globally, and for us as a people.”
