Survey: 75% of Women Business Owners Attribute Success to Mentorship

Survey: 75% of Women Business Owners Attribute Success to Mentorship

Inspiring others and mentorship are two significant factors driving women entrepreneurs—including Black women business owners—that feeds their passion for being their own boss.

A new survey shows that some 33% of female small business owners were compelled to start a business to encourage other women to do the same.

And 36% of those questioned report they now have “a female mentor or role model in the business world.” That was notably true with women of color, with 42% reporting having such a supporter, roughly 1.5 times higher than their white peers. Some 75% of those surveyed attributed having a mentor as a reason for their business success.

Another intriguing figure is that 61% of female small business owners “worked a day job so they could save enough cash to open their business.” That figure was even greater for women of color at 71%. The analysis consisted of 505 respondents who identified as white and 508 as people of color.

The findings emerged during Women’s History Month from a survey of 1,013 female business owners paid for by Office Depot. The survey was conducted by One Poll for Office Depot in February.

“The growing number of women who have turned their passion projects into successful small businesses is incredible,” said Zoë Maloney, executive vice president and chief human resources officer for The ODP Corp.

“Seeing female entrepreneurs come together to empower and mentor one another while developing the next generation of powerful female leaders is so inspiring and impactful.”

Office Depot is a wholly owned subsidiary of ODP.

Some 53% of the 500 female small business owners of color reported there weren’t enough resources available to them along their journey in opening their own business. Those surveyed stated helpful assets like “cash grants (38%) or marketing materials (29%)” would have helped get their business started.

Some 40% of them are confident that some of the difficulties they faced were tied to discrimination or bias against race/ethnicity, while 42% feel they were also denied opportunities that would have helped their firm.

“It’s no surprise that these survey results show mentorship, collaboration, and passion are critical to entrepreneurial success,” Maloney stated among email comments.

“Addressing such issues requires a commitment to raising awareness and then doing something about it. That’s why we’re spearheading programs like Elevate Together™, designed to help close the racial wealth gap, address systemic discrimination, and provide economic opportunities for Black- and Hispanic-owned small businesses.”

At the same time, respondents overall pointed out “lack of funds (47%) and trying to maintain a work-life balance (38%) among the top challenges when opening their businesses. The other obstacles included “marketing (35%, difficulty growing (32%, and networking (29%).”

However, some 73% believe it is “easier for a woman to “become a successful business owner today than 10 years ago.”

Of the four in 10 respondents who launched businesses in the past two years, 61% say the COVID-19 pandemic was a large factor that prompted them to take the plunge.

Kanye West Tells D. L. Hughley That He ‘Can Afford to Hurt’ Him, Hughley Responds

Kanye West Tells D. L. Hughley That He ‘Can Afford to Hurt’ Him, Hughley Responds

Kanye West may need to hire extra security as his enemy list has grown.

Ye issued a thinly veiled threat to comedian D.L. Hughley after Hughley appeared on VLAD TV and spoke candidly about Ye’s behavior in a recent social media post.

One of the Original Kings of Comedy remarked that Ye’s action against Kim Kardashian amounts to stalking. Ye caught wind of Hughley’s words and warned him that he “can afford to hurt” him.

According to XXL, in the since-deleted post, Ye says, “And DL Hughley is a pawn Yeah I know a king not supposed to address a pawn but I address everything and find addresses DL So don’t speak on me or my children I can afford to hurt u.”

In another deleted post, Ye continued his attack on the comedian by calling him a drug addict and posted a video clip of Hughley passing out on stage in 2020 due to contracting coronavirus.

He proceeds to tell Hughley, “God does not like you You have no favor Your family hates you I would hate to be related to somebody who used to be famous Now you just known as a broke pawn at least Oprah got billions ‘allegedly’ Come on leftist Y’all gotta do better than DL This Ye Bring the real smoke baby.”

In a third deleted post, he states he found out that Hughley lives in Calabasas, CA, and shared a photo of the area he lives in and exclaimed, “Wuuuuuut??? DL lives in Calabasas???????? Yoooooo God is good 😊”

But, as can be expected, Hughley hit back and levels several insults at the billionaire artist.

Arkansas Judge Who Was Left In A Shoebox As A Newborn Locates His Birth Parents After Appearing on Fox News

Arkansas Judge Who Was Left In A Shoebox As A Newborn Locates His Birth Parents After Appearing on Fox News

A Black county judge in Arkansas who was orphaned as a child located his birth parents after appearing in a Fox News interview.

Joseph Wood launched a campaign last November in honor of National Adoption Month to locate his birth parents. The Chicago native was abandoned and left in a shoebox as a newborn and lived in several foster homes before being adopted, NY Post reports.

It was after speaking with Fox News Digital to share his hopes of finding his parents when CeCe Moore, a prominent genetic genealogist on cold cases, reached out to help Wood.

“Even if you open up adoption records, it’s not going to help those people,” Moore said. “So we call this DNA-only cases. The only way to identify the birth parents in cases like that is to have their DNA tested.”

Wood struggled with his identity throughout his childhood. The Chicago native eventually relocated to Arkansas, becoming the state’s first Black county judge.

After Illinois passed a law in 2010 allowing adult adoptees to apply for their original birth certificates, Wood discovered that he had been abandoned on March 20, 1965, the day he always thought was his birthday.

Moore says it’s always “a race against time” when trying to locate family members because people can pass away in the time it takes to find them.

On Dec. 23, 2021, Wood received a call from Moore informing him that a match was found. Unfortunately, Wood’s mother passed away in 1978 at age 36. His father died in 2007 at 68, and one of his brothers passed in 2013 at 48.

Wood’s maternal grandfather died in 2020 at 98 and he hasn’t received a response from his brother and sister that are still alive.

“I want to connect with my brother and sister first,” Moore said before sharing more about his family tree.

“My dad was one of 10 or 11 brothers and sisters. My mother was one of six brothers and sisters, a number of whom are still alive. And so I don’t want to start reaching out to uncles and aunts without trying to connect with my siblings first.”

“I’m just blown away that I got this far. I thought I would not know anything for the rest of my life,” he said.

Taraji P. Henson Says Jussie Smollett’s Sentence ‘Does Not Fit the Crime’

Taraji P. Henson Says Jussie Smollett’s Sentence ‘Does Not Fit the Crime’

Last week, Jussie Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in jail, 30 months of felony probation, and ordered to pay restitution of more than $120,000. Smollett was also charged a $25,000 fine for lying on police reports in a fake hate crime hoax.

Empire actress Taraji P. Henson, Smollett’s TV mother, is the first cast member, at least publicly, to speak on her former coworker’s punishment. She does not believe that the punishment fits the crime and makes a comparison to the Emmett Till murder. Henson took to her Instagram and sent a message to her 19 million followers as she pleaded #freejussie.

I am not here to debate you on his innocence but we can agree that the punishment does not fit the crime,” Henson said.

“Emmett Till was brutally beat and ultimately murdered because of a lie and none of the people involved with his demise spent one day in jail, even after Carolyn Bryant admitted that her claims were false. No one was hurt or killed during Jussie’s ordeal. He has already lost everything, EVERYTHING! To me as an artist not able to create that in itself is punishment enough. He can’t get a job. No one in Hollywood will hire him and again as an artist who loves to create, that is prison. My prayer is that he is freed and put on house arrest and probation because in this case that would seem fair. Please #freejussie 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾.”

Smollett’s brother, Jocqui, stated on Instagram that his brother has been placed in a psych ward at Cook County Jail but denies that he has suicidal ideations.

Jocqui shared that they are concerned because a note was attached to his paperwork and placed on the front of his cell saying that he’s at risk of self-harm.

Daily Mail reported that the Cook County Sheriff’s Office in Chicago has stated that Smollett is not being held in solitary confinement. They put out a statement saying that the use of “solitary confinement was abolished” at the Cook County Jail in 2016. Any claims that he is being held in that manner are not true.

Naomi Osaka Taunted By Spectator At BNP Paribas Open And Brought to Tears

Naomi Osaka Taunted By Spectator At BNP Paribas Open And Brought to Tears

After losing the first game of her second-round match against Veronika Kudermetova at the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday night, Naomi Osaka was taunted by a spectator in the crowd who reportedly yelled out “Naomi, you suck.”

The four-time grand-slam champion, who withdrew from the French Open and then missed Wimbledon last year after revealing her mental health issues, was heckled early in the match. She lost 6-0, 6-4 to the world No 24, according to CNN.

The news outlet reported that after hearing a shout from a suite in Stadium 1 on Saturday, a distraught Osaka was shaken by the comment and asked the umpire for the microphone to address the crowd, during a break in play.

But that request was denied. There has been no comments on whether the spectator was identified or removed from the venue. After speaking to a tournament supervisor, she was allowed to speak after the match.

Addressing the crowd after the match, a choked-up Osaka referenced the 2001 incident when Serena and Venus Williams were targeted with racially charged insults at the same tournament.

“To be honest, I’ve been heckled before,” Osaka said. “It didn’t really bother me.
“But heckled here, like, I’ve watched a video of Venus and Serena (Williams) get heckled here and if you’ve never watched it, you should watch it. I don’t know why, but it went into my head and got replayed a lot.”
Before leaving the court, Osaka thanked the crowd and offered her congratulations to Kudermetova.

The tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams and their father, Richard, were booed by the Indian Wells crowd in 2001 after Venus pulled out of the sisters’ scheduled semifinal matchup at the last minute due to a knee injury, as per The Los Angeles Times. The sisters boycotted the tournament for years. Serena went on to win the final but didn’t return to the Indian Wells until 2015. Venus returned in 2016.

On November 17, 2021, Serena Williams went on the Red Table Talk Show with Will Smith and explained how she experienced anxiety when she returned to compete in Indian Wells in 2015.

“I mean, it was hard. Talk about post-traumatic stress and mental anxiety.”

Jo Marie Payton Will Only Do ‘Family Matters’ Reboot If Judy Winslow Makes A Return

Jo Marie Payton Will Only Do ‘Family Matters’ Reboot If Judy Winslow Makes A Return

The Family Matters cast is all on board to reboot the popular ’90s sitcom. However, mama Harriet Winslow, played by actress Jo Marie Payton, wants her youngest child written back into the show.

Reginald VelJohnson, Payton, Darius McCrary, and Kellie Williams reunited at 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut, this weekend and responded to a question about if they would reprise their iconic roles for a reboot, People reports.

Fans of the show remember the show’s original cast that included Carl and Harriet Winslow’s family of three children, Eddie Winslow, Laura Winslow, and Judy Winslow, played by actress Jaimee Foxworth. However, producers decided Judy no longer needed to be included in the show by season four.

Twitter

Now 30 years later, Payton is sharing her gripes with the decision and the only way she’ll return for a reboot.

“Don’t think for a minute that we did not go in,” Payton told fans while revealing how she was “personally hurt” by Foxworth’s removal.

“When I mentioned it to the producers, I said you guys need to tell me something that is not only creative but also politically correct to straighten out this situation because there’s nowhere in the world a family … You gave me three kids, you took away my baby,” Payton recalled telling producers.

“If you had taken away my oldest child, we could have always come up with [various excuses in the episodes] that she was at the mall or with her friends. You took away my baby, and when I asked you, ‘Why did you take away my baby girl?” you said, ‘Nobody would notice,'” she explained.

Payton understood her role as a star on the show and the accountability viewers held her and other cast members to.

“I said, ‘You know what, when we’re walking down the street, nobody’s gonna notice you because they’re not going to ask you, they’re going to ask me what happened to Judy,'” Payton continued.

“So for me, that’s one of the other things that I [wouldn’t be] excited about going back into it.”

Payton says she would only return if Judy walked down the iconic family stairs in the first episode.

“The worst feeling in the world for a parent is not to know where your child is,” Payton said, adding that “if [a reboot were to happen], and Judy comes back, I will do Family Matters again!”

Top 10 Money-Saving Tips for Your Spring Break Vacation

Top 10 Money-Saving Tips for Your Spring Break Vacation

With Spring Break fast approaching, a lot of people are planning on having days upon days of fun. If you’re on a tight budget, though, you might be wondering how to have the vacation you want. Fortunately, you can still have a fun time without tearing your budget to shreds.

Here are 10 of the top expert-recommended tips that can help.

Scope out the less popular places

Places like Cancun, Daytona Beach, Cabo, or The Bahamas immediately come to mind when you hear “Spring Break.” The popular destinations are likely to be the most expensive but they’re not the only places you can have fun. Think about finding sites with similar features like Hollywood, Florida or Samana Bay in the Dominican Republic.

Get some professional advice

It’s tempting to do all the research and book the trip yourself. Working with a travel agent, however, can give you some insight into some good deals. Agents can get better hotel rates as well as tell you about impressive packages that include free drinks or discounted meals. They can also tell you about free upgrades that will make your trip even more special.

Be picky about where you stay

Depending on where you choose to visit, you could choose among hotels, condos and resorts. It’s a good idea to check which one will give you the best rates and perks. In some cases, you may be able to bundle your stay and your flight to save more money. If you can get some reward points during your stay that would be great too.

Avoid traveling on Saturdays

Prices for travel and hotel stays can vary depending on if you’re traveling on weekdays or weekends. Check the prices to see how much lower the cost would be if you avoided Saturdays. If possible, leave on Friday evening or choose Sunday travel. A shorter Spring Break is also an option if you’d prefer to travel during the week.

Travel wisely

When you’re moving around, your options will likely be renting a car or taking public transportation. It’s a good idea to weigh the costs of taking a Lyft or Uber everywhere or renting a car. If you decide to rent a car, make sure to shop around. Websites like Priceline and Expedia can be very helpful for that. To save a little more, you can also reserve your rental car for the trip. Experts say that you can save money this way instead of paying upfront.

Be wary of extra fees

While doing research, it can be easy to miss the fine print and think you’re getting a great deal. Take your time and watch out for extra fees that are associated with booking, checking luggage, cleaning, or taxes. These little fees can really add up over time and make it harder to maintain your budget.

Consider group travel

One major benefit of traveling in a group is being able to split the cost of transportation, accommodation and entertainment. If you have friends or acquaintances who are looking for a deal, consider synching up everyone’s trip. It might be more fun to stay in a rental with everyone instead of paying for separate hotel rooms too.

Look for free activities

You might need to do a little digging for this one. While some information might be online, it helps to talk to the locals. Find out what’s happening in the area that will cost little or nothing. You can get to know the destination better than other tourists. It’s also a great way to find more affordable places to eat.

Do a little cooking

Even the most meticulous planner can forget how much food costs on a vacation. You can get a handle on this by cooking some of your meals. If this appeals to you, make sure to find accommodations that have a kitchenette. You can save a lot of money just by getting some basic groceries as soon as you arrive.

Prepare a daily budget

Since you’re on vacation, you might want to get a few souvenirs. If you’re not careful, things can get out of control quickly. You can keep this in check by setting a daily budget then being picky about what’s worth it.

Of course, there might be more ways for you to save money on your Spring Break trip when you think about it some more. The important takeaway is that you need to control your spending before and during the vacation. By doing that, you’ll only have happy memories of the trip when you get home.

Pete Davidson Texts Kanye West to Defend Kim Kardashian and Tells Him ‘Calm Down’ and ‘Grow Up’

Pete Davidson Texts Kanye West to Defend Kim Kardashian and Tells Him ‘Calm Down’ and ‘Grow Up’

Pete Davidson is no longer staying silent in his “feud” with Kanye West.

Davidson has allegedly “requested” to meet with Ye in texts sent between the SNL regular and the eccentric music producer.

According to the New York Post, Davidson and Ye had a text exchange after the comedian reached out to Ye to tell him that enough is enough.

Saturday Night Live guest writer Dave Sirus revealed screenshots of the communication between the two on Sunday. The New York Post verified the since-deleted texts off social media but copied by many spreading the information across social media.

The conversation shows Davidson reaching out to Ye as he defends his girlfriend Kim Kardashian and asks him to calm down and “grow the f**k up.”

“Yo it’s Skete. Can you please take a second and calm down. It’s 8am and it don’t gotta be like this. Kim is literally the best mother I’ve ever met. What she does for those kids is amazing and you are so f–king lucky that she’s your kids mom. I’ve decided im not gonna let you treat us this way anymore and I’m done being quiet. Grow the f**k up”

Ye responds: “Oh you using profanity now. Where are you right now?”

To which Davidson responds, with a picture, “In bed with your wife”

As the two exchanged texts, Davidson tells Ye that he’s in LA for the day if he wants to stop being “a little internet b*tch boy and talk.” All the while telling Ye that his actions are embarrassing and it’s “so sad to watch you ruin ur legacy on the daily.”

Davidson even offers Ye help as his mental health issues after his father, a firefighter, died on 9/11 have been well-documented.

He also tells Ye that he has stopped Saturday Night Live from making fun of him and other stand-up comedians.

Davidson’s words fell on deaf ears. According to E Online, in a since-deleted Instagram post, Ye complained about Davidson “antagonizing” him, not mentioning Davidson offering to talk to him or help him.

“The boyfriend texts me, antagonizing me, bragging about being in bed with my wife,” he said in the clip, which was later deleted. “I’m like, well, who’s watching my children if he’s texting me, bragging about being in bed with my wife?”

New York Woman Sues For $30 Million After Police Put Her Photo On ‘Wanted’ Poster For Prostitution

New York Woman Sues For $30 Million After Police Put Her Photo On ‘Wanted’ Poster For Prostitution

After the New York Police Department wrongfully smeared the photo of a Queens woman on a “wanted” poster, labeling her as a thieving hooker, she is now suing for $30 million.

According to the New York Post, Eva Lopez, 31, first discovered she was wanted by police after a friend of her boyfriend’s informed the couple through text message. They were stepping off a flight from Florida at the time, per court documents.

“I thought it was something fake. I really couldn’t believe the police would put me on a wanted poster,” she recalled.

After some convincing from a friend, Lopez immediately contacted Detective Kevin Dwyer, whose name was listed on the poster. But he “knew it was an issue before she called,” according to the legal filing.

In fact, Dwyer told Lopez the poster had already been removed from the department’s Facebook page and other websites. It was then revealed to her that the actual “wanted” person had a tattoo sleeve. Lopez doesn’t.

Lopez, a fashion influencer and bartender at a club in Queens, knew the damage had already been done when the poster began to circulate.

“It was already spread around on social media. … It was still being passed around, still being talked about, still making me look like a thief and a prostitute,” Lopez told The Post, adding that her reputation was tainted.

According to the poster,  the police were looking for a suspect associated with an Aug. 3 theft at an East Village apartment where a man had booked an escort online. His $13,000 Rolex was stolen by the escort, as well as his roommates’ Chase credit card, police officials said.

However, Lopez said she wasn’t in Manhattan on Aug. 3. She was in Queens.

The detective also informed Lopez that the victims filed complaints with the police and presented her photographs to them.

“The NYPD should commit to more thorough investigations before haphazardly accusing and identifying innocent people of fantastic lies and brazen crimes,” said her lawyer Mark Shirian, who argues that the escort may have been intentionally using Lopez’s social media pictures.

“I just really want people to know that’s not me, in any way, shape or form. The girl has nothing to do with me,” she said.

As reported by The Post, Lopez’s lawsuit against the police department is currently under review by the City Law Department.
