Ewah and Jones Gibson represent two diverse female entrepreneurs being saluted today by Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, as part of International Women’s Day (IWD) and throughout Women’s History Month (WHM) over the next few weeks. Amazon reportedly invests billions each year to help drive seller success through launching their products in its store, helping them scale and reach new customers, and build brands. Amazon says in 2021, the company and third-party lending partners provided more than $800 million to invest in the growth of small businesses throughout the nation.

Through its IWD and WHM efforts, Amazon is connecting customers to a wide range of products of women-owned small businesses they can discover and purchase. This thrust includes allowing customers to read stories about inspirational entrepreneurs and shop thousands of products from nearly 200 women-owned small businesses at http://www.amazon.com/WHM2022.

Ewah and Jones Gibson are included as subjects for its “Women-Owned Small Businesses | Amazon Conversation Series,” a collection of video chats between influencers like actress Keke Palmer, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, and style blogger Chriselle Lim and other female Amazon sellers. Today, Palmer, an entrepreneur in her own right, highlights the experiences and champions the diverse leadership displayed by Ewah and Gibson for today’s segment, “Redefining who gets to be a business success story.”

Finding Success In The Personal Care Space

For Obia Naturals, the journey began in 2012 when its founder and CEO Ewah used her dual bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and biology to launch the product line to address her own sensitive skin needs. A chemist for private label cosmetic manufacturers, Ewah filled a void in the market with her formulas that used natural ingredients. She says: “In a few short years, what started out as botanical blends for friends and family blossomed into a global business.”

Due to lack of capital access, the determined entrepreneur started her venture with a $1,000 personal investment. She used a mix of reinvested revenue and personal loans from family and friends to stay in business. “When we first launched into a major retailer, we were able to accomplish that with just a $25,000 personal loan.”

She gained new customers for Dallas-based Obia Naturals in 2020 from people who supported Black-owned businesses, and its revenues rose 20% within a year, despite supply chain issues tied to the pandemic. Ewah says 2022 has started as an exceptional year and projects annual revenue of more than $1 million.

Ewah’s business was further bolstered through her participation in Amazon’s Black Business Accelerator (BBA). Amazon launched this $150 million, four-year effort last year, providing access to capital, strategic guidance, mentorship, marketing, and more to help Black entrepreneurs with physical, consumer products grow their companies and maximize selling opportunities in Amazon’s store.

Through Amazon, Obia Naturals expects to reach thousands of new customers by going global. Says Ewah: “We plan to expand to Amazon markets in Canada, France, and United Kingdom within the next year.”

Reaching Customers Through Multiple Platforms

As CEO and Chief Creative Officer at Culture Brands, Jones Gibson is making a huge splash in the marketing arena. She says her company exists to authentically celebrate, reflect, and represent African Americans in media. As such, Culture Brands has multiple platforms, including Because of Them We Can and CultureTags, which she describes as a “spirited guessing game that will test how well you know hashtags and the culture.” Other holdings for the Hyattsville, Maryland-based company include Because of Them We Can Box (Just For Kids) – and Dream Village.

After launching BOTWC four years earlier, she formed Culture Brands in 2017 to provide the infrastructure to scale the operation, enabling it to work “alongside socially conscious brands and organizations to create and amplify culturally relevant, and affirming, campaigns and products.”

Securing startup capital was no easy task, though. Jones Gibson explains: “Like most entrepreneurs who bootstrapped their companies, I leveraged personal funds, personal credit, and the assistance of family members to fund my business in the beginning.”

She developed CultureTags in late 2019 after “seeing acronyms posted online followed by hilarious commentary, and I knew that it was a game. Especially since my group chats were being overtaken by acronyms and abbreviations to express quick thoughts or sayings,” Gibson told black enterprise via email.

Elevating The Card Game With Amazon

She started a Kickstarter campaign to finance the game in late January 2020 and funded it the same day. “Altogether, we raised $35,000, which was more than double our original goal.” Citing that revenue has doubled each year, Jones Gibson is excited about the game’s growth prospects. She says her firm is creating a way for people to play CultureTags daily through a new website it plans to release this month. “We also have plans for additional expansion packs and versions, with some coming out as early as May this year.”

She maintains selling the game through Amazon “boosted sales by over 25%, and we’re just getting started. The opportunity on Amazon is massive, considering how many people engage with their site on a daily basis. I’m marching toward a goal of 1 million new customers through Amazon.” Jones Gibson says Culture Brands has been selling in Amazon’s store for the past 10 months.

So how is Amazon helping Gibson attract new customers and untapped markets? Jones Gibson says, “We are currently expanding our SKUs on Amazon, which will allow us to continue to grow our brand there as we build out our store and presence.” SKU, or stock keeping unit, represents an item used by retailers to identify and monitor inventory.

Jones Gibson says Culture Brands will continue to develop campaigns, content, and products that celebrate and honor Black culture. As another boon, the company secured another huge win last year when it was chosen by Hyundai to help boost the automaker’s brand presence. She asserts: “The significance of the deal with Hyundai is that we are their first African American marketing agency of record. They recognize the importance of their customers’ unique experiences and in the opportunity to ensure they are seen, represented, and celebrated along their journey.

Chris Brown’s Former Housekeeper Suing For $50 Million for Dog Attack

Chris Brown’s Former Housekeeper Suing For $50 Million for Dog Attack

A former housekeeper of Chris Brown is suing the rapper for a reported $50 million in damages for injuries she claims she suffered when Brown’s dog attacked her at his house.

Radar Online reports that the former housekeeper, who is using the pseudonym Jane Doe in court papers, is requesting that Brown pay her $20 million for pain and suffering, another $20 million for the emotional distress she suffered, and $10 million for her loss of consortium.

The woman also lists her damages as $20 million for the disfigurement the dog allegedly inflicted on her and the physical impairment from the attack. She has disclosed her medical expenses have cost her $24K so far, and she anticipates having to spend another $400K in the future.

She also states that she has lost earnings as much as $100K to date and anticipates she’ll be out another $550K when this situation is done. She asked the court to consider hitting Brown with punitive damages of $20 million.

Last July, according to TMZ, one of Brown’s dogs was suspected of viciously attacking and mauling a woman who worked on his property. She also accused him of trying to cover it up when 911 was called.

According to the filing, the housekeeper blames Brown for the injuries she suffered when his dog, Hades, a Caucasian Shepherd Ovcharka, allegedly attacked her in December 2020 while working at his house in Tarzana. The housekeeper said she was taking out the garbage when the dog approached and attacked her. Hades, it’s alleged, bit into her flesh and left her bloody on the ground.

The woman also alleges that Brown and people at his house didn’t do anything as she screamed for help, and Brown had other people gather the dogs before police officers arrived. After 911 was called, they arrived and took the accuser away in an ambulance. The woman then claims that when the authorities attempted to get to the bottom of the situation, she said Brown was evasive and misleading, allegedly telling the police officers that he didn’t know what happened or who took the dogs.

Florida Mother Pleads Guilty to Murdering Daughter She Reported Missing

Florida Mother Pleads Guilty to Murdering Daughter She Reported Missing

A Florida mother who reported her daughter missing in 2019 has been charged with the child’s murder.

Brianna Williams appeared in court on Thursday, where she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of her 5-year-old daughter, Taylor Rose Williams, WOKV reported. Williams is now formally charged for her daughter’s death and could face anywhere from more than 20 years to life in a state prison.

The mother, who worked as a naval petty officer first class at the Tactical Operations Center at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, was charged with aggravated child abuse, lying to police, and tampering with evidence related to Taylor’s death, according to WKOV

The state attorney’s office also accused Williams of torturing, maliciously punishing, or caging her daughter between April and November 2019.

On November 6, 2019, Williams reported her daughter missing. During the investigation, authorities noted that Williams was uncooperative and lied about several key facts in the timeline about her daughter’s disappearance. First Coast News reported that the mother previously faced several child abuse charges related to her daughter’s death.

“The apartment of Brianna Williams was thoroughly searched, photographed, and evidence was collected,” prosecutor Lauren Anderson said on Thursday. Anderson added that the apartment had “obvious signs of neglect and abuse,” including soiled children’s clothing.

Investigators believe Williams forced her daughter to stay inside a closet when she was not home. Neighbors reported seeing Taylor alone, wearing the same pajamas and holding the same doll. They noted Brianna’s car was nowhere to be seen when they would see the child by herself.

Police reports say Williams’ apartment reeked of bodily waste and human decomposition and had bloodstains on the carpet and walls that tested positive for Taylor’s DNA. They also found soup cans with holes punched in the lids believed to be Taylor’s only food source when she was confined.

No one reported seeing the child alive after May 2019. Records show Williams drove round-trip from Alabama to Jacksonville three times in the three days before she reported the child missing.

Taylor’s remains were found outside Williams’ Alabama hometown six days after her mother reported her missing. The child’s body appeared to have been stuffed in a garbage bag and buried in a shallow hole. Taylor’s remains were badly decomposed, with authorities locating just 10% of Taylor’s bones that were found scattered around the scene.

Brianna Williams’ sentencing is scheduled for May 11.

A Long Shot: Sherri Shepherd Wants Wendy Williams As A Guest On New Talk Show

A Long Shot: Sherri Shepherd Wants Wendy Williams As A Guest On New Talk Show

Imagine being a guest on the show of the person who replaced you. That could be the case if Sherri Shepherd gets her way.

After being named the host of the new talk show replacing The Wendy Williams Show, Shepherd revealed her hopes of having Wendy as a guest on Sherri.

Shepherd is currently the permanent guest host on Williams’ daytime talk show amid her hiatus and is set to take over the throne when her talk show premieres this fall. When asked if she would want Williams as a guest on her upcoming show, Shepherd said “of course.”

“I’m so thankful to Wendy for letting me fill in for her and letting me fill the gap to support her as all the other co-hosts have also done,” Shepherd told Deadline.

“I’m thankful because if it wasn’t for Wendy, the eyes wouldn’t have been on me. I’m so thankful to her. We’re all praying for her.”

She admits to not having a personal relationship with Williams that warranted a conversation since taking over her post.

“It’s not like everybody thinks that in Hollywood, we all have each other’s phone numbers,’ Shepherd explained. “Wendy knows me because I’ve sat in as a guest and I guest hosted for her two years ago. So it’s not like she doesn’t know me but we’re not friends. I am glad that she trusted me when they asked if I could come in and trusted that I could do it.”

In addition to having Wendy as a guest, Shepherd shared the lineup of first-week guests she’s hoping to have.

“For the first week, I am wondering what Oprah is doing? I want to know what Idris Elba is doing and if his wife could part with him for one hot minute,” she said.

“Come on, Regé-Jean Page. Hey, Method Man! I want him to come on. ‘Michelle Obama, we’re both from Chicago. Are you and your husband doing anything that week?’”

Sherri Shepherd sounds like she’s ready to rise to the occasion.

Trump Backed Congressional Candidate Vernon Jones Throws Tantrum — Storms Out Of Event Because Of Speaking Order

Trump Backed Congressional Candidate Vernon Jones Throws Tantrum — Storms Out Of Event Because Of Speaking Order

Georgia Congressional candidate Vernon Jones angrily stormed out of a political event in Jackson Country Saturday frustrated by the speaking order.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Greg Bluestein uploaded a video on Twitter showing Jones talking before arguing with someone off-screen about the speaking order of the event before walking out.

According to Newsweek, Jones was told he would be speaking second at the event but was instead slotted to talk before his GOP opponent Mike Collins.

Jones did not take the change well, commenting on the situation as soon as he hit the stage.

“I came here because I’m sincere, I came here because I’m a fighter, I came here to earn your support,” Jones says in the video. “But I’m not going to be subjected to politricks. Now I was selected to be the second person; Mike Collins was supposed to go first; you are now trying to change it.”

The host, who is off-camera, cuts Jones off before the two begin speaking over each other. Jones eventually stops, and the host says he’s more than an hour behind and urges Jones to speak.

“As I said, they’re playing politricks because Mike, he wants to go second, everywhere he goes, he attacks me after the fact, and I never get a chance to respond, I’m not going to play that game.”

Jones went on to say that the event’s organizers tried to persuade his campaign manager to draw names out of a hat to determine the speaking order. After reiterating his point several times, Jones put the mic down and left.

In an email he sent to Newsweek after the event, Jones claimed Collins “is the Democrats and liberal Atlanta Journal & Constitution [sic] Greg Bluestein’s preferred candidate.”

Jones has made several headlines over the past year. Last year, he was in the Georgia House of Representatives as a Democrat when he announced he was changing his party affiliation to Republican at an event on Jan. 6, the same day as the Capitol Riot.

Last month, Jones announced he was dropping out of the governor’s race to run for Congress in Georgia’s 10th District. Several hours after making the announcement, Trump endorsed him.

Desirée Walker is Solving Golf’s Inclusivity Problem

By Desirée Walker

Because I run a golf social events company called Road2Par here in Washington, many people are surprised to learn that I did not begin playing golf until relatively late in life. As an African American woman, I wasn’t exposed to golf growing up. But now that I have been bitten by the golf bug, I’ve become passionate about bringing golf to people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play or be exposed to the game I’ve fallen in love with. That is why Road2Par’s mission is to bring underrepresented populations to the game.

So as someone dedicated to growing the game at a grassroots level, I was disappointed to hear that the PGA Tour, the most prominent face of golf in America, had threatened to prevent American players, including some of golf’s biggest superstars, from competing in tournaments on the Asian Tour. Not only does this go against the Tour’s mission to promote and grow the game, but it ultimately makes it even harder for people like me to be exposed to golf in the first place.

I am the perfect example of the type of person that the PGA Tour should be doing more to reach out to. I had never touched a golf club until a friend of mine suggested we try going to a Top Golf to celebrate my 30th birthday, and I was immediately hooked. The more I played, I found that golf was not only a great way to exercise and reduce my stress levels, but it became a way to challenge myself to always improve and grow as a person. I became determined to make golf a bigger part of my life.

Within six months, I started taking courses at the Golf Academy of America, where I learned how to play, how to teach others, and the basics of golf course management. I also became certified by the Titleist Performance Institute to help people improve their fitness through golf. I started Road2Par, a blog that chronicled my golf obsession as I transitioned to working in the industry, where I’ve since held a variety of positions at public and private courses.

I quickly realized the biggest obstacle to getting friends to join me was the intimidation they felt about simply going to the golf course. Let’s face it; golf is very male, very white, and not always very welcoming. It can be intimidating for a new golfer to go to a course for the first time and can be even more daunting for people of color. To make golf more accessible, I turned Road2Par into a golf events company that brings people to the golf course in a social setting to introduce them to the game.

Unfortunately, not only are minorities under-represented at the participant level, but on the professional level as well. There are only two African American men currently playing full-time on the PGA Tour and one African American woman playing full-time on the LPGA Tour, further contributing to a lack of representation for people of color both on our hometown courses and when we watch golf on TV, which doesn’t help bring new participants or fans to the game.

Which is why I also don’t understand why the PGA Tour would try to prevent players from competing in Asian Tour events – and threatening to fine or ban them if they do – that would help to expose even more people to golf. I know firsthand how big an untapped golf market Asia is, as evidenced by how well the LPGA has grown with a strong influx of Asian players over the past few years. If I were running the PGA Tour, I’d want to promote the game with my best players as much as possible in as many tournaments as possible around the world. We have great examples of this through Tennis with stars like Naomi Osaka.

To me, the PGA Tour’s stance on these issues shows it is less an organization dedicated to promoting and growing the game of golf and more a group determined to maintain their control over the game and serve as its gatekeepers. For a sport that has struggled with inclusion for decades, the Tour unfortunately reflects the “members only” exclusionary attitudes many golf newcomers face, especially if they are people of color. I know the PGA Tour is part of the “Make Golf Your Thing” industry campaign to encourage more people to participate, but simultaneously threatening to fine or ban players for playing in other tournaments around the world doesn’t send a welcoming message to prospective golfers and fans.

For now, I remain an outlier: a woman of color who became so obsessed with golf as an adult that I’ve made it my life. I know firsthand from my events that there are others like me who would fall in love with the game if given the opportunity, and I encourage the PGA Tour to focus on creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for new golfers rather than taking actions that do anything by grow and promote this great game.

Desirée Walker started Road2Par, LLC in 2016, after completion of the Golf Course Management Program at Golf Academy of America, located in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Mary J. Blige Announces Inaugural Atlanta-Based Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit

Mary J. Blige Announces Inaugural Atlanta-Based Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit

After slaying the Super Bowl halftime stage and wrapping season 2 of Power Book II last month, Mary J. Blige keeps the iconic moves flowing by announcing her inaugural music festival for women.

On Monday, Mary and Pepsi announced the “Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit” in partnership with Live Nation Urban. The three-day festival will take place in Atlanta on Mother’s Day weekend from May 6–8, 2022.

Described as “unapologetically curated for and by women,” it will include a jam-packed lineup of music, wellness, tech, beauty, and financial literacy, as well as live concerts, workshops, and other gatherings taking place at several venues across the city, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Joining Mary on the list of performers is Ella Mai, Chaka Khan, Xscape, City Girls, Queen Naija, Kiana Lede, Kierra Sheard, Omeretta The Great, and more.

SOAW Festival

“These are some of my favorite singers. They move the culture and have made us dance all of our lives,” Blige said.

“It’s about women who want to elevate and keep moving forward.”

She explained how a recent listening party she hosted helped inspire her to launch a music festival.

“All the women from the streaming services were coming in stressed. They were picking up their wine and talking about the songs,” Blige said.

“It became this big session about how each song made them feel and how it related to their lives. Just seeing that over and over and over again sparked an idea.”

Local minority and women-owned businesses will also be highlighted throughout the festival as they come together to put on a memorable event for the community.

“Atlanta has been doing this for a while. It’s a big Black entertainment hub. If we’re doing it for the culture and we’re doing it for us, do it there,” Blige said. “Atlanta was always the most fun place to party and still is for me. I remember Jack the Rapper, and don’t get me started on Freaknik.”

“Get dressed. Get decked out. Let your hair down,” she said. “The Strength of a Woman is about us coming together to heal, to be examples for each other and to do some partying.”

Presale tickets go live at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2022, with general on-sale beginning on Thursday, March 10, at 10 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at soawfestival.com.
