Rev. James Lawson Jr, Advisor To MLK, Dies At 95

Lawson was able to connect the principles of Gandhi to Biblical principles, which he was able to use to show the fragility and immorality undergirding the white supremacist power structures upholding the system of Jim Crow

Rev. James Lawson, a teacher of nonviolent resistance methods and an advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, died at the age of 95, his family confirmed on June 10. According to the family, Lawson had been ill and died on June 9 in Los Angeles, where he worked for decades as a pastor, labor organizer, and university professor.

As NBC News reported, Lawson and King met in 1957 after Lawson was in India for three years, learning about the methods of Mohandas K. Gandhi. King, at the time they met, had not yet engaged with Gandhi’s work. The two men, both 28 years of age, quickly bonded over their enthusiasm for the Indian leader’s work.

After their meeting, King urged Lawson to utilize the nonviolent methods in the South, where Jim Crow ruled, and Lawson would soon lead workshops in church basements in Nashville, Tennessee, that prepared future leaders like John Lewis, Diane Nash, Marion Berry, and the participants of the Freedom Rides among others, to withstand indignities that would be hurled at them by opponents of integration.

Lawson was able to connect the principles of Gandhi to Biblical principles, which he used to show the fragility and immorality underpinning the white supremacist power structures upholding the system of Jim Crow. As NBC News reported, Lawson told the Associated Press, Gandhi’s teachings taught him that “we persons have the power to resist the racism in our own lives and souls. We have the power to make choices and to say no to that wrong. That’s also Jesus.”

Tragically, Lawson organized the sanitation strike in 1968 in Memphis, where Dr. King was assassinated by James Earl Ray. Lawson later said in an interview that the murder of King both paralyzed and saddened him. “I thought I would not live beyond 40, myself. The imminence of death was a part of the discipline we lived with, but no one as much as King.” Lawson also declared during a march honoring the 50th anniversary of King’s death that the job he and King helped begin was not yet complete. “I’m still anxious and frustrated,” Lawson said. “The task is unfinished.”

Lawson’s lifelong commitment to nonviolence ironically began as the result of a moment in his childhood when he lashed out in anger at a white classmate who called him a racist slur. His mother asked him a simple question, which altered the trajectory of his philosophy. According to NBC News, Lawson told The Tennessean that his mother asked him, “What good did that do, Jimmy?”

That question would eventually spur Lawson to become a conscientious objector to the unpopular war preceding the Vietnam War and the Korean War. As a result, Lawson, similar to Muhammad Ali during the Vietnam War, would spend a year behind bars rather than serve as a soldier. Lawson’s lessons in nonviolence led to the removal of “No Colored” signs at movie theaters and lunch counters in Nashville.

Lawson would remain an active organizer well into his 90s, and as he eulogized John Lewis in 2023, he urged those who heard his voice to commit to dismantling the wrongs in American society wherever they are found. “If we would honor and celebrate John Lewis’ life, let us then re-commit our souls, our hearts, our minds, our bodies, and our strength to the continuing journey to dismantle the wrong in our midst.”

Kodak Black’s Attorney Calls For ‘Instant Mistrial’ After Young Thug’s Lawyer Given Jail Sentence

'I cannot believe the Judge thinks taking a defense atty into custody isn't a mistrial,' Bradford Cohen said

After a heated exchange in court on June 10, Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steel, was thrown in jail by Judge Ural Glanville for contempt of court. After the news of his imprisonment reached the airwaves, an attorney for recording artist Kodak Black insisted that the act of the judge calls for a mistrial to be declared in the RICO trial of the Atlanta rapper.

In a social media posting on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Bradford Cohen, who represents Florida rapper Kodak Black, feels that the actions of Glanville should be grounds for an “instant mistrial.” His reasoning revolves around Glanville’s insistence on Steel revealing how he found out about a conversation that took place in the judge’s chambers involving Glanville, a sworn witness, and prosecutors earlier in the day.

During the trial on June 10, Steel approached Glanville with the revelation that he was privy to a discussion that took place where a reluctant witness, Kenneth Copeland, was allegedly told if he did not cooperate with his testimony, he could be jailed for up to two years. Steel stated that he wasn’t told by the court of the conversation, especially since Copeland was thrown in jail on June 7 because he refused to testify against his YSL cohort, Young Thug.

“You’re not supposed to have communication with a witness who’s been sworn,” Steel told Glanville.

After accusing the court of coercion, witness intimidation, and ex parte communication, Steel still wouldn’t give Glanville the information of how he found out about the conversation. For refusing to do so, Glanville sentenced the attorney to 20 days in jail, and he is slated to spend the next 10 weekends at the Fulton County Jail.

TSU Athletic Director Mikki Allen Says Improved Facilities Could Generate Revenue

Dr. Mikki Allen made a case to the university's Board of Trustees that for the university’s athletic departments to generate more revenue, the university should look to renovate its existing athletic facilities.

Dr. Mikki Allen, the athletic director for Tennessee State University, made a case to the university’s Board of Trustees that in order for the university’s athletic departments to generate more revenue, the university should look to renovate its existing athletic facilities. Allen argued the university to construct buildings on campus that can generate revenue for the cash-strapped department.

As HBCU Gameday reports, Allen wants the facilities built to help ease the cost of supporting the various athletics programs the university maintains. “We need to get revenue-generating facilities on campus so we can start offsetting the brunt of institutional dollars that are going into athletics,” Allen told the board.

He also called attention to the need to refurbish Ed Temple Track, which he believes is a step in the right direction. Allen believes that the university needs dedicated athletic facilities, a central operations building, and more adequate housing on campus. In order to help make these expansions more achievable, Allen stressed to the board that facilities that can generate premium revenue have to be built so the athletic program can make money instead of losing it.

Allen stressed the importance of constructing housing, as it is a central concern of mothers and other family members who send their young people to attend the university. “When we bring young men and young ladies into our program, the first thing aunties and mama say is: ‘hey, where is my young person gonna stay?” Allen told the board.

Allen called for upgrades to modernize the Gentry Center, where the university’s basketball teams play their home games, in order to generate more potential revenue for the university. According to HBCU Gameday, Allen told the board that current-generation LED technology and media boards could help attract sponsorships for the programs, thereby enhancing their revenue generation potential.

Allen also advocated for a gradual approach to constructing a football stadium and wanted the board to keep ways to secure mixed-use of the facilities, such as ensuring the stadium is ADA compliant and potentially using a turf field to ensure the stadium could be used to host non-sports events and generate extra money for the athletic programs.

Allen understands that the changes he is calling for require a substantial and sustained investment in infrastructure from the university’s board, as well as the continued support of the TSU community. In summary, HBCU Gameday reported that Allen is fundamentally asking for the support of both the institution and the broader TSU community in order to restore the former glory of the Tennessee State University athletic programs.

Allen, who was named the university’s Athletic Director in 2020, has overseen a number of improvements and additions to Tennessee State University’s athletic programs, including naming Candice Dupree, a former WNBA All-Star and assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, the women’s head basketball coach. As Black Enterprise previously reported, Allen and TSU made history in April by naming Duanté Abercrombie the head coach of its hockey program. That move made TSU the first HBCU with a hockey program. Allen’s remarks to the board appear to be in alignment with the progress he has already made over four years at the university.

Talking About Diddy Scandal Amid Release Of ‘It Was All A Dream’ Documentary Has dream hampton ‘Mad’

dream hampton is upset that her new hip-hop-focused documentary is being scarred by questions about Sean "Diddy" Combs allegations.

dream hampton is upset that her new hip-hop-focused documentary is being scarred by questions about Sean “Diddy” Combs allegations.

The filmmaker, producer, and writer spoke at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, June 9, where she premiered her new documentary It Was All A Dream. With the new film featuring personal archive footage from hampton’s time in the studio with iconic hip-hop artists like The Notorious B.I.G., among others, she was asked about the allegations surrounding the Bad Boy founder.

“I’m kind of just mad at him that I have to talk about or be asked about it,” she told People.

As for if she thinks Combs will suffer any consequences for his alleged crimes, hampton has “no idea” since “it’s all unfolding.”

hampton is the executive producer of the Surviving R. Kelly series that aided in the charges brought against the incarcerated singer. Her newest documentary features old footage from her encounters with Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man, Mobb Deep, and Snoop Dogg, as well as Combs’ first chart-topping Bad Boy artist, B.I.G.

Combs has been under fire amid a series of lawsuits accusing him of sex and drug abuse, misconduct, and trafficking, among other allegations. His ex-girlfriend Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura was the first to file a lawsuit in November, accusing Combs of being abusive throughout their decade-long relationship.

Last month, CNN shared leaked 2016 surveillance footage showing Combs brutally beating Ventura in the hallway of a hotel in Los Angeles. The disgraced hip-hop mogul owned up to his behavior in the video and offered an apology.

But it came after he initially denied the “sickening allegations” that “have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday,” he wrote in a statement. Ventura is the only one who filed a lawsuit that was settled within 24 hours.

The leaked video came after Combs’ homes in Miami and Los Angeles were raided by federal agents in March. Lawyers for Ventura say the hotel video only further confirmed” Combs’ “disturbing and predatory behavior.”

NYC’s Own Cam’ron Disgusted With City Still Having Rat Problems

'I just left New York... I can’t do rats no more. I’m too old for rats.'

Harlem-raised entrepreneur and music artist Cam’ron doesn’t have that hometown warmth one comes to expect after moving away. On a recent trip to New York City, the “It Is What It Is” host still declares love for the city but also states that some things don’t change, saying, “I put my time in with them rats and roaches,” and stating that the city “was disgusting.”

Cam took to his Instagram account to state that the city, in some respects, is still the same now that he is currently a Las Vegas resident. According to HipHopDx, he posted a video letting his 3.1 million followers know that he just left the “Big Apple” but isn’t anxious to “do this s**t” anymore, although he did mention he will be back in the summer for “a week or two.” His stay was very brief as he was only out here for less than three hours and was ready to fly back out of town.

“I just left New York. That s**t was disgusting,” he said to the camera while seemingly appearing on a boat. “Out there for two and a half hours, and I booked a flight. I can’t do this s**t. I love this city. I’m coming back in the summer for about a week or two. I put my time in with them rats and roaches. They still haven’t fixed the rat problem. Still!”

Rats have always been a problem for New York City residents, and Cam apparently has put in his time in dealing with the rodents. Although dealing with rats isn’t based on how old you are, he does claim he is “too old for rats.”

Luxury Dog Airline BARK Air Sued By Westchester County Over Seat Limit Violation

BARK Air, a dog-centric luxury airline, faces legal action from Westchester County for breaching airport seat regulations following its inaugural flight from New York to Los Angeles.

A new airline designed specifically with dogs in mind is currently under fire. BARK Air, which operates out of New York’s Westchester County Airport, is being sued by Westchester County for reportedly violating a county law. The legal action came just days after the airline’s first flight.

The brand-new luxury airline’s inaugural flight from New York to Los Angeles took off on May 24, and the lawsuit was filed on May 30. According to the legal documents, Westchester County Airport has a rule that states that “the airport’s private jet section can only accommodate jets with nine passenger seats or fewer.” BARK Air uses a Gulfstream Aerospace GV jet, which includes 14 passenger seats.

In an injunction against BARK Air, Westchester County’s actions could force the airline to leave the airport altogether or move from the private jet area to a busier passenger terminal.

The “white paw experience” flight led by BARK Air that flew from Westchester County Airport to Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles on May 24 was priced at $6,000 for one passenger and dog.

“There were a mix of breeds onboard, including chihuahuas, a golden retriever, and dachshunds,” said BARK’s Chief of Staff Katherine Enos. She also described the airline’s first official voyage as a “great success.”

“Happy to report that there was no dog drama; some dogs played in the aisle while the smaller dogs took nice long naps,” she continued.

“All dogs snacked on BARK cereal treats for dogs, dog-friendly cupcakes, chicken-flavored puppuccinos, and doggie champagne (chicken broth),” Enos confirmed. “The humans onboard all got along as well and felt connected in their shared obsession with their dogs.”

At this time, BARK, which credits itself as “the world’s first air travel experience designed specifically for dogs first, and their human companions second,” currently flies between the cities of Los Angeles, New York, and London. They are considering adding more cities to their roster, reportedly eyeing Paris, Milan, Chicago, Seattle, Florida, and Arizona as new travel destinations.

Shocking Video Shows Investment Banker Punching Person In The Face Over Alleged Israel-Gaza War Dispute

The exact location of the incident is unknown but it reportedly happened in the Park Slope neighborhood of the borough hours after the annual LGBTQ+ pride parade.

The person seen and filmed allegedly punching a person in the face on the streets of Brooklyn, New York, has been identified as managing director of a global investment banking firm, Jonathan Kaye.

The video, which went viral after being posted on Twitter on June 9, shows Kaye of Moelis & Co. allegedly throwing his fist at an unidentified person’s face. The victim then fell to the ground near another person seen struggling to get up. Kaye is then seen walking off as bystanders call him out. “She f— threw shit all over me,” Kaye can be heard saying, with liquid appearing to be splashed on the back of his jacket.

The exact location of the incident is unknown, but it reportedly happened in the Park Slope neighborhood of the borough hours after the annual LGBTQ+ pride parade.

After becoming aware of the video, the investment firm confirmed Kaye’s employment and released a statement condemning his behavior. “We have become aware that one of our employees was involved in a serious incident in Brooklyn on June 8,” the statement read.

“We take this matter very seriously and are conducting an investigation.”

According to ABC 7, the assault started allegedly after Kaye at one point told a group holding a Palestinian flag, “You guys are on the wrong side.” However, several social media users feel that, regardless of the issue, he should suffer consequences. “A coward! I hope they take him for every penny,” @gunthereagleman wrote. Another person said, “he definitely needs to go to jail, but before hand he needs his ass kicked!!”

Flyers have been posted near Kaye’s brownstone apartment that he shares with his wife and three kids, as neighbors are furious about the incident. An unidentified man was seen leaving Kaye’s house yelling, “You can’t hide.”

The  New York City Police Department has been made aware of the circulating video but said there has yet to be a police report submitted. The Brooklyn Pride Board, which facilitates Brooklyn’s Pride celebration, released a statement claiming the unidentified victim hasn’t come forward but still does not condone violence of any sort. “Brooklyn Pride has reviewed the video link, and while it appears to have occurred way after the parade had ended, we have forwarded the video to the local precinct,” the Board said in a statement.

“Brooklyn Pride condemns violence of any kind, and we will continue to monitor what we believe was an abhorrent incident.”

While the event happened following Pride activities, it has not been revealed if the victim is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Four Tops Singer Sues Hospital For Accusing Him Of Being Delusional About Being In Legendary Group

The lead singer of The Four Tops filed a lawsuit against a Michigan hospital for accusing him of lying about his celebrity status.

The lead singer of the legendary Motown group The Four Tops has filed a lawsuit against a Michigan hospital for accusing him of lying about his position in the group.

Alexander Morris might not be an original member of the group that dominated the pop music scene in the 1960s and helped propel Motown to international stardom, but he has been a key figure of the quartet since joining The Four Tops as their lead singer in 2019.

However, his music career was allegedly overlooked when Morris sought treatment at Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital in Warren in April 2023, People reported. In a lawsuit filed on Monday, June 10, Morris accuses Ascension of racial discrimination over claims hospital staff deemed him as “delusional” and denied him medical care after he told them he was a member of the classic group.

According to the suit, Morris was restrained for an hour and a half and ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after hospital staffers “wrongfully assumed he was mentally ill when he revealed his identity as a celebrity figure.” Morris was experiencing chest pain and trouble breathing while on tour with the band when he sought treatment at Ascension.

The singer informed the hospital about his celebrity status and “current security concerns due to stalkers and fans.” However, upon sharing this information, hospital staff took him off oxygen and ordered a psych evaluation instead of the emergency medical treatment he was in need of.

His requests for oxygen were “ignored,” and he was put in a restraining jacket, the lawsuit states. When he asked to be removed from the restraints so that he could seek treatment at a different hospital, the hospital denied his request. He also accuses the late security guard, who is white, of telling him to “sit his Black ass down” when he asked to show ID to prove his identity.

The hospital, a nurse, and a security guard, who passed away in September, are listed as defendants in the suit seeking more than $75,000 and a trial by jury. It wasn’t until Morris’s wife arrived and showed a video of him performing at the Grammy Awards that the hospital removed the restraints and put him back on oxygen.

“When our client presented to the hospital he was racially profiled. The hospital staff and security guard were quicker to assume Mr. Morris was psychotic than successful because he was a Black man,” his attorneys Maurice Davis and Jasmine Rand said in a statement.

“Even if he was mentally ill he was still in the middle of a clear medical emergency that necessitated swift medical intervention. The hospital had no excuse to deny him emergency medical treatment.”

Morris, who has a history of cardiac issues, was ultimately diagnosed with a heart infraction that could require a heart transplant and cause pneumonia. He also suffered three seizures that day, the lawsuit states. Morris says the hospital offered him a $25 gift card “as an apology.”

“The health, safety and well-being of our patients, associates and community members remains our top priority,” an Ascension spokesperson said in a statement. “We remain committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all persons and the community. We do not condone racial discrimination of any kind. We will not comment on pending litigation.”

Lily Gaddis Fired After Refusing To Apologize For Using N-Word On TikTok

Her now-ex-employer, Rophe of the Carolinas, issued a statement on June 11 which did not mention her by name, but declared that a newly hired employee had been fired for inflammatory commentary on social media

Lily Gaddis, a TikTok user who used to post a lot of “trad-wife” (traditional wife) content on the platform, has been removed from TikTok and fired from her job as a result of a pair of videos she posted. In one of the videos, Gaddis used the N-word in reference to who her circle of friends were married to.

As Dextero reported, the original video Gaddis posted, in which she used the N-word, received backlash, so she posted a second video to purportedly address the backlash. Gaddis referred to the husbands of her friends as “broke ass n***s” in the first video that received widespread backlash. During the follow-up video she posted, Gaddis addressed the criticism with a non-apology, “So a recent video of mine seems to have upset members of a certain community. All the backlash made me do a soul search. After all that, I still couldn’t find a care.” Gaddis declared.

Her now-ex-employer, Rophe of the Carolinas, issued a statement on June 11 which did not mention her by name but declared that a newly hired employee had been fired for inflammatory commentary on social media. “We at Rophe of the Carolinas want to address a recent incident that has caused concern and upset among our stakeholders. A newly hired employee made inflammatory remarks on social media that do not align with the values and beliefs of our company. We want to make it clear that these sentiments are not representative of our organization, and we do not condone or support such behavior.”

https://twitter.com/mcbc/status/1800684717584593332?t=dQZYIGUtk4EAgm22mg4a0w&s=19

The statement continued, “As soon as we were made aware of the situation, we took immediate action to pull the employee from her assignment, which is not directly with any client of ours, and the employee in question is no longer with our company. We are owned and operated by (an) African American female and immigrant-owned business and handled this situation as quickly as we could. We want to assure you that we are committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and respectful work environment where all individuals are valued and respected.”

In contrast to her Tik-Tok accounts, Gaddis’ Facebook and Twitter/X accounts are still active, and she, in particular, used her Twitter/X account to amplify support from right-wing accounts. As The Daily Beast reported, she argued that her First Amendment rights were under attack, posting, “If my freedom of speech taken, they’ll be coming for yours next.” Gaddis also followed up that post sarcastically thanking Black people for helping to launch her next career. “Thanks, Black community, for helping to launch my new career in conservative media! You all played your role well like the puppets you are.”

Oprah Winfrey Down Bad Due To ‘Serious’ Stomach Flu, Gayle King Reveals

Gayle King didn't hold back when revealing the graphic details of the stomach flu Oprah Winfrey recently experienced.

Gayle King didn’t hold back when revealing the graphic details of the stomach flu Oprah Winfrey recently experienced.

The media mogul was set to appear on CBS Mornings on Tuesday, June 11, to speak with her best friend King and author David Wroblewski about his new book Familiaris, which is featured in her book club. However, Winfrey was noticeably absent during the live taping and King took it upon herself to let everyone know why.

“She had some kind of stomach thing, stomach flu,” she said, as captured by TMZ. “Stuff was coming out of both ends. I won’t get too graphic.”

Winfrey’s condition was so severe she ended up in the hospital and “had to get an IV” for dehydration. “It was a very serious thing,” King shared.

Reps for Winfrey confirmed her stomach flu and said she’s on the mend.

“Ms. Winfrey is recovering following a stomach virus and received an IV due to dehydration at the recommendation of her doctor,” a spokesperson told E! News. “She is resting and feeling better every day.”

The OWN founder was set to chat with Wroblewski about Familiaris, the prequel to 2008’s The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. But her health got the best of her.

CBS Mornings opted to pull the detailed reveal from its YouTube but TMZ had already captured the moment and shared it online. King says her best friend will be “okay” and seemingly had second thoughts about revealing so much about her health condition on national television.

“I hope she’s not mad at me for sharing the detail,” she told Wroblewski. “I wanted to make it clear, though, that it mattered to her and it really bothered her that she couldn’t be here for you today.”

Wroblewski might eventually get his moment with Winfrey considering his status as one of only a few authors to make her coveted book club twice. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle made the list in 2008.
