Restaurateur Larry Morrow Opens ‘Sun Chong’ In The French Quarter As An Ode To His Maternal Grandmother

A 32-year-old restaurant owner has aspirations to be “one of the largest Black-owned hospitality groups in the South,” with several eateries opening up before the end of 2023; he is well on his way!

According to NOLA.com, Larry Morrow, the owner of New Orleans’ French Quarter restaurant, Sun Chong, plans to open six places by the end of this year. But he is not stopping there, as he has more expansive plans for 2024.

Sun Chong, located in the French Quarter at 240 Decatur Street, is named for his 69-year-old maternal grandmother. Morrow says that many of her Korean recipes are used on the menu at the restaurant.

He credits his business acumen to family, specifically his grandmother and mother.

“My mom’s an entrepreneur,” he states. “My grandmother’s an entrepreneur. I have strong women in my life, and that’s made me strong, too.”

Morrow told AfroTech that he started as an entrepreneur when he produced entertainment industry events under his moniker, Larry Morrow Events. He was recently featured on “Earn Your Leisure,” where he talked about some lessons he learned up to this point in his career.

At 22, he opened Larry’s Poboys & Wings. Although it lasted only a short time, that business taught him some things that helped him avoid the mistakes from the first opening.

“Learning from when I was 22, it helped prepare for when I opened up Morrow’s,” Morrow said. “I knew I needed more reserves, and I was just mentally in a better place. I was much more mature than 22 years old.

“I opened up Morrow’s, it was like a line out the door, and I’m like, ‘Oh sh-t, we on to something.”

Now, Morrow says that he has conceptualized five different restaurants and a club. Along with the burgeoning restaurants, he is also involved in real estate. He bought his first property with $39,000 in cash, so we will be seeing more of Morrow in the near and distant future.

New Jersey Graduating Senior Helps Peers By Offering Laundry Services At School

New Jersey Graduating Senior Helps Peers By Offering Laundry Services At School

Bullying has become a major obstacle for school-aged children, and with the 24-hour nature of social media, some students have no reprieve from the criticism of their peers. When 18-year-old Jimmy Tomredle of Lacey Township High School noticed many of his classmates were absent throughout the academic year due to fears of being bullied for their clothing, he decided to make a real difference.

Drawing inspiration from Newark, New Jersey’s West Side High School Principal Akbar Cook, who captured the national spotlight for installing five washer and dryer units in the football team’s locker room so that students could have free laundry, Tomredle enlisted the help of school staff and local appliance stores to do the same. After several handwritten letters went ignored, the senior class president finally received a response from Anchor Appliance in West Creek, New Jersey, saying they were willing to donate one washer and dryer to the school. According to YourTango, “Tomredle’s Terrifically Tidy Laundry Services” are now available for needy students and accessible through the school’s custodian closet.

Tomredle financed detergent for the laundry service independently to kick things off; however, he is now taking donations to further provide resources for those in need.

His generosity is more than just good karma. According to Cook, over 85% of the students at West Side High School were missing three to five days of school per month due to not having clean clothes to wear, and rather than face the possibility of being ridiculed, they’d refuse to show up. “These are kids, good kids who want to learn, that are missing three to five days a month because they were being bullied because they were dirty,” Cook said. “I even changed the school uniform to darker colors so they could go more days without cleaning them, but even with that, students were struggling to have them look clean enough to attend.”

Approaching absenteeism from a compassionate place is imperative to creating a safe environment for young people to truly thrive in school systems.

Teen Suspect Identified In Homophobic Stabbing Incident At NYC Gas Station

Teen Suspect Identified In Homophobic Stabbing Incident At NYC Gas Station

An unfortunate run-in between two groups of men resulted in the stabbing death of a Brooklyn man, a popular fixture on the LGBTQ+ ballroom scene. O’Shea Sibley’s love for the popular “vogue” style of dance collided with homophobic violence on Saturday, July 29, at a neighborhood gas station. Now, a 17-year-old suspect is said to be on the run.

According to NBC 4 New York, Sibley and the attacker fell into a dispute over his dance moves at a gas pump. After an attendant tried to intervene, the 17-year-old stabbed the 28-year-old dancer in the chest. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Law enforcement on the scene said the stabbing suspect, who identified as Muslim, was offended by the dancing of Sibley and the scantily clad outfit he was dressed in. His friends and loved ones expressed fear surrounding his safety as an openly gay Black man in the days leading up to the attack. “I texted him that morning to tell him [I] wanted to talk to him to tell him to tell his friends to be careful, you know, because you have to be careful how you present yourself,” Beckenbaur Hamilton, a friend of the deceased, said. “They don’t live in the neighborhood we live in, it’s a very homophobic neighborhood, and they were out here dancing.”

For Black LGBTQ+ people, there is a constant battle to truly feel safe and protected even in the neighborhoods they’ve lived in their whole lives. As new laws are passed to strip the community of its human rights, increasing concerns about homophobic people feeling justified in their hate crimes similar to this stabbing is prevalent. “There is no progress. Progress? Yes. But we here don’t see it. We have to live stifled,” Hamilton continued. “We live here in a community where we have to pretend to be somebody else.”

Charles Barkley Discusses Rift With Michael Jordan On 60 Minutes

Charles Barkley might be petty, and the same goes for Michael Jordan. That probably best explains why neither has attempted to repair the strained relationship following Barkley’s criticism of Jordan’s ownership style of the Charlotte Hornets.

When asked about any possible reconciliation during a 60 Minutes interview, Barkley tersely responded:

“He’s got my number,”

The former NBA star’s response indicates that Barkley refuses to be the first of the two men to apologize.

Barkley has spoken about it in the past, telling The Waddle And Silvy Show in 2012:

“Michael is one of my best friends. I love him like a brother. He’s always been there for me, but I do have to do my job. I do have to do my job. Like I told him I can’t get on radio and TV and say you have done a good job no matter how much I love you.”

Barkley said then that Jordan was not happy with him, and in other interviews, he has detailed that Jordan cursed him out before hanging up the phone and never calling him again.

Jordan has not addressed their falling out publicly, not even during 2020’s cultural firestorm The Last Dance, a Netflix-produced documentary focusing on Michael Jordan and his final season with the Chicago Bulls.

Barkley touches on several topics in the interview, including the propensity of journalists to ask Black athletes about anything related to race. At one point, Barkley remarks that the media does not stick a microphone in Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers’s faces but expects Black athletes to speak to the moment. Barkley regards that as unfair and says that while Black athletes should contribute financially and get involved that way, constantly asking them questions like they are supposed to have all the answers clearly bothers him. Barkley comes across in the interview as a genuine and relatable figure, which has become his trademark over the years as a basketball analyst on the TNT and CBS networks.

Barkley, 60, can take a long view of his life and beams with joy as he shows a video of his grandson, Henry. Barkley remarks that he is on the “back 9” of his life, acknowledging his mortality and desire to share as many moments as possible with his grandson.

Barkley is also preparing to host a CNN show alongside Gayle King titled King Charles, which will discuss a number of topics. Barkley says he wants the show to be non-political, but that’s unlikely. The man famous for a Nike advertisement campaign declaring that he is not a role model would love nothing more than for his grandson to eventually Google him and see what all Barkley had accomplished for however long he lives.

Roc Nation Sports Acquires Brazilian Agency Adding Two Impressive Soccer Players To It’s Roster

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports continues its venture into soccer by acquiring Brazilian sports agency TFM, adding a slew of rising soccer talent to Roc Nation’s portfolio.

Forbes reports with the acquisition, Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, who led his country Brazil in assists during the 2022 World Cup, and Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, whose current transfer value is estimated at $87 million, joins Roc Nation’s list of pro soccer players which includes Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku among the120 players the agency represents.

The acquisition signals how fast Roc Nation, which launched its international arm in 2019, has established itself in soccer. In September 2020, the agency hired soccer agent Alan Redmond as the head of football and absorbed his agency R10 Sports Management.

“Our desire was to open up our own office, start from scratch, and build,” Michael Yormark, president of Roc Nation Sports International, told Forbes earlier this month. The agency has “now decided that if we can find the right acquisition target that aligns with our goals and objectives and our overall strategy, then it’s the right opportunity to explore.”

Under Roc Nation, TFM  Founder Federico Pena will run the agency’s Brazil office, which will now give its clients a full-service agency, including the marketing of its athletes.

The agency has established itself as a top sports agency stateside as well. Its list of American athletes includes MLB players Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Dominic Smith. NFL stars Jaire Alexander, Saquon Barkley, Gabe Davis, and Leonard Fournette are signed to Roc Nation, and retired athletes Tony AllenCaron ButlerVictor CruzZach RandolphJalen RoseKenny Smith, and Michael Vick.

The acquisitions and signings have boosted Roc Nation from a boutique agency to seventh on the Forbes list of North America’s most valuable sports agencies. The agency currently has over $2 billion in active contracts and is expected to collect up to $203 million in commissions.

Is Jay-Z Eyeing Ownership Of Premier League Soccer Team ‘Tottenham Hotspur’?

Billionaire hip-hop recording artist Jay-Z has eyes on a professional football team and is ready to bid substantially on it.

According to Daily Express U.S., the Brooklyn businessman is interested in purchasing a team in the English Premier League. The team, Tottenham Hotspur, may need a new owner soon as the current one faces significant jail time after being accused of insider trading and securities fraud in the United States. The team plays its games in London.

Tottenham Hotspur’s owner, British billionaire Joe Lewis received bail last week from a Manhattan Federal Court judge after the 86-year-old pled guilty to charges of giving insider trading tips. He faces 16 counts of securities fraud and three counts of conspiracy.

The charges each carry a maximum sentence of five to 25 years in jail. Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, told the court: “He used inside information to compensate his employees or shower gifts on his friends and lovers. That’s classic corporate corruption.”

Hip-hop’s King of New York, the 53-year-old business mogul with a net worth of more than $2.5 billion, leads a group of American investors waiting to see what happens to Lewis and if an opportunity will arise from his situation.

Thirteen years ago, Jay-Z reportedly was interested in buying the Spurs’ bitter North London rivals, Arsenal. He revealed then that he had become a massive fan of the team and that Thierry Henry, who played for the team, was his favorite player. Although he was interested, the sale didn’t happen. At the time, Jay-Z remarked, “I don’t know a lot about the business of soccer, but in the future, if the right opportunity presented itself, then who knows?”

If things don’t go well for the federally charged Lewis, that time could be forthcoming for the “Streets Is Watching” lyricist. The Tottenham Hotspur team has an estimated market value of about $2.8 billion. That amount can be matched by the fortune of Jay-Z and his fellow investors.

Beyoncé And Tiffany & Co., Release Limited-Edition Collection To Fund HBCU Scholarships

Beyoncé’s Tiffany & Co. partnership has expanded to include a limited-edition collection made especially for her Renaissance tour.

On Saturday, July 29, Tiffany & Co announced “The Return to Tiffany® x Beyoncé Collection” with 100% of proceeds going to Beyonce and Jay-Z’s About Love Scholarship. Announced on the first anniversary of Bey’s “Renaissance” album, the collection includes three necklaces co-designed by Bey that reflect both sides of the partnership.

One side reads “Tiffany & Co. New York 925,” while the other shouts out Beyoncé’s seventh studio album.

“Welcome to the Renaissance Beyoncé 925,” it reads.

The three pieces aren’t cheap and range in price from $275 to $700. But all proceeds will go toward The About Love scholarship, a partnership between Tiffany & Co, Beyoncé’ Bey Good Foundation, and Jay-Z’s Shawn Carter Foundation.

The About Love Scholarship funds education for students in the creative and arts field at five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) including Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Norfolk State Universit in Virginia, Bennett College in North Carolina, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and Central State University in Ohio.

The proceeds will add to the more than $2 million Tiffany & Co. has already given to Bey and Jay’s foundations, Teen Vogue reports.

Beyoncé has been dripped out in Tiffany & Co. pieces throughout her Renaissance. The luxury jewelry allows fans to shop the pieces on their site that include the Tiffany T earrings, the Tiffany HardWear gauge links Bey’s been seen in, and a custom Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti® Mesh dress she opened her Toronto show in, among others.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s About Love campaign launched in 2021 with a luxury ad spotlighting the superstar couple. It came after Beyonce modeled more than 200 carats of Tiffany diamonds — including an iconic 128.54-carat yellow diamond necklace she was the first Black woman to ever wear. The necklace had already been worn by Audrey Hepburn and Lady Gaga.

T-Pain Turned Down 6-Figure Offers Before Signing With Akon’s Konvict Muzik For $20K

A decision based on career aspirations and not immediate finance helped propel T-Pain to have that long career he yearned to have. The recording artist turned down a couple of six-figure deals and signed for an advance significantly less than what he was offered from two major labels.

According to AfroTech, the “Rappa Ternt Sanga” gave an exclusive interview with Los Angeles-based radio station KRRL (Real 92.3). In that interview, T-Pain discussed making a business decision to take substantially less money for a sustainable career.

After the Tallahassee, Florida, resident released an independent successful single, “I’m Sprung,” which did well on the Billboard charts and immediately put him on the map, he started to get offers.

“Interscope Records offered me a $900,000 signing bonus as an 18-year-old,” T-Pain said. “That sounds crazy. Out of Tallahassee. And at this very moment, there’s no lights on in your house. At this very moment, my studio’s been run off a generator outside, and we can’t run it past 11 o’clock. I have no power in my house. We can’t pay for gas to get to the airport, to fly to Interscope Records. They’re offering us these things. And you know, we went to Atlantic, which was offering $700,000, but everybody was offering all these things for the single, just for the one record.”

Yet, another recording artist made a more significant offer that was more appealing to the ears of T-Pain. Akon, who had his own label, Konvict Muzik, wanted the producer-singer to sign a contract with him, offering him a career. Although Akon’s offer was much lower at $20,000 as a signing bonus, he had faith in the fellow artist’s promises when he told him he’d “make sure” T-Pain had “a long career.”

“When I went to all these companies, they was like, ‘I love this song. I love this song. What can we do? Can we get another song? Can we do this song?'” T-Pain stated. “And Akon was like, ‘I love you. I love what you’re doing, and I wanna make sure you have a long career.’ He was the only person talking like that. And I wasn’t in it for short money. I was in there trying to get the long play going. He was the only one talking about it, so I went with him… and I literally ran away from home in order to sign with Akon.”

T-Pain signed with Konvict Muzik in 2005 and has been making money ever since.

E-40 Recalls Being Rap’s First Millionaire, ‘I Taught the People That Taught You’

Before there was Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, and Diddy, there was E-40, a Bay area-based emcee noted as the first rapper to receive a multi-million dollar deal.

On Saturday, July 29, the “Tell Me When to Go” rapper reposted a clip from the “No Vultures” podcast where Cellski and host Lord Rab recalled seeing E-40 secure a $3.5 million deal in the early 90s.

“E-40 just signed for $3.5million, my n-gga,” Cellski said.

Lord Rab recalled the deal being announced back in 1994 in the now-defunct magazine “Rap Pages.”

“E-40 was the first person on the front of the magazine with the multi-million dollar deal,” Lord Rab declared.

“$3million sounds normal as fuck now — no rapper was gettin’ money like that.”

E-40 proudly shared the clip while patting himself on the back for being the “The 1st artist/CEO with a multi million dollar distribution deal.”

“I taught the people that taught you! #samesince88 based on a true story via @lordrab @cellski415,” he wrote.

In 2012, E-40 spoke with NPR about the record deal he signed in 1994 with his group members of The Click, B-Legit, D-Shot, and Suga-T.

“When we signed with Jive Records in 1994, a lot of people were like, ‘Man, they got a $3million deal! Woo, they got $3million!’ he said at the time. “You don’t get $3million up front just like that. No. As a matter of fact, it was worth way more than that over the years.”

He continued. “But I already had money. I owned a couple houses. Stayed on the golf course, had Lexuses and Rovers. I was already having it. So I didn’t want they advancement like that. I like to see the backend. And that’s what I seen.”

Earlier this month, E-40 took his credit for reigniting the West Coast scene of rap in the early 2000s when he re-emerged with hits like “Tell Me When To Go,” and “U And Dat,” among others.

“I put new life into the West Coast in 2006. And that’s no ifs, ands or buts,” he told the New York Times.

“Can’t nobody say I didn’t, with the help of Lil Jon. And it’s never stopped since then.”

Iyanla Vanzant Mourns Her Youngest Daughter 20 Years After Losing The Eldest

“It is with great sorrow that we announce the transition of Nisa Vanzant, the youngest daughter of our Beloved Iyanla Vanzant we are asking for your prayers,” stated the post written by a member of Vanzant’s team. “Please respect the privacy of her and her family at this time. Thank you.”

Vanzant is an advocate for spiritual healing, getting her start on the radio before eventually guest appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show. This led to her signature docu-series on the media mogul’s channel OWN.

Since the rise of her Iyanla: Fix My Life, the mother of three is known for helping people confront and heal from their traumas, including celebrities such as actress Karrueche Tran. The show ran for nine seasons from 2012 to 2021.
Before Nisa’s death, Vanzant lost her eldest daughter Gemmia, in 2003 after a battle with colon cancer. Iyanla shared what she learned in her grieving journey since her late daughter’s passing on the TODAY podcast Making Space with Hoda Kotb in 2021.
“Well, it changes who you are as a woman. It changed who I was as a woman, first for the worse, and then for the better,” detailed Vanzant on losing her first child. “God must’ve really, really trusted me to give me a soul to bring into life, and to trust me with the courage to send her out.”

Nisa will be remembered by her mother and brother, Damon. She was 29 years old, with the cause of death being unknown publicly at this time.

While this latest loss is heartbreaking, Vanzant is more than understanding of how life is all about the experience of love that a mother can have for her child,

“In relationships, people don’t bring you love or give you love. What they do is make you aware of the depth of love that you are.”
