Kyle Anderson, Now A Citizen Of China, To Compete In FIBA Tournament

NBA player Kyle Anderson is now a naturalized citizen of China and will compete for the country in the upcoming FIBA tournament. According to CNN, Anderson, whose Chinese name is Li Kaier, made the announcement with a video posted to his Weibo account.

There are a few ways to obtain Chinese naturalization; in Anderson’s case, since his great-grandfather was Chinese, he is eligible to become a naturalized Chinese citizen. Anderson is the first U.S.-born basketball player to become a Chinese citizen and is considered a great acquisition by the Chinese national team.

The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) posted a photo of the 6’9 Timberwolves forward standing next to Yao Ming on its official Weibo account, indicating how highly it views him and captioning the post: “Welcome Anderson! Li Kaier obtained Chinese nationality this morning and met with Yao Ming, chairman of the [CBA].”

It is unclear whether or not Anderson had to renounce his U.S. passport to become naturalized, as China does not recognize dual citizenship.

Though this is the first time a basketball player has become a naturalized citizen, China has had athletes in other sports do the same. The most notable is U.S.-born freestyle skier Eileen Gu, who won two gold medals and a silver at the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022. Gu, whose mother is a Chinese immigrant, has not shared whether she was required to renounce her U.S. passport. She raised some suspicion when she applied for the U.S. Presidential Scholarship Program in 2021, which is open only to United States citizens or permanent residents. Gu has also been guarded when answering questions about her citizenship status, often telling reporters some variation of “When I’m in China, I’m Chinese. When I’m in the U.S., I’m American.”

Dual citizenship regarding its athletes is something the Chinese government does not comment on, mostly because it has strict rules around citizenship but appears to perhaps skirt them to accommodate athletes. China’s first naturalized athlete was Canadian heptathlete Nina Schulz, known by her Chinese name, Zheng Ninali, who competed in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

There are also a few naturalized athletes who compete in China’s Super League, and the majority of China’s men’s ice hockey team is naturalized, so it seems that China is attempting to broaden its pool of athletes via naturalization.

This practice is a subject of debate in China. Charlotte Brooks, a history professor at Baruch College at the City University of New York, describes the conflict between identity and national governments, telling the South China Morning Post, “Unfortunately, nationalism tends to be very limited and monogamous in a way that it’s defined… It’s a strange way to talk about it, but people’s identities are often really much more complicated than what national governments are comfortable with or allow or recognize.”

Get Into This 18-Wheeler Turned Organic Urban Farm

When Derek Drake started his company Ditto Foods, he had one mission: to focus on social responsibility and sustainability by providing the highest quality produce to Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) groups, wholesalers, and local restaurants. Now, the 18-wheel semi-truck parked in his driveway is one of the most exciting and innovative farming companies in Chicago.

Drake is single-handedly making hydroponics—plants that grow without the use of traditional soil or soilless mixes—a more common way of producing fresh vegetables.

According to Black Business.com, Drake’s process is not only more sustainable than other agriculture practices, it is also more efficient, as hydroponic farming creates more vegetables and herbs in half the time as traditional farming. What began as a way for Drake to recover from losing his job in hospitality following the COVID-19 pandemic has turned into a purposeful method of minimizing his carbon footprint while delivering fresh food to Chicago residents. With LED lights and water, Drake can grow up to 3 acres in a 320-square-foot shipping container.

And he doesn’t stop there.

Drake, who has more than 70,000 followers on TikTok, has made it his mission to inspire people from Chicago and beyond to take food-growing into their own hands. He regularly posts content and fields questions from farming hopefuls asking how to get started, and he has no problem keeping it real about the work it truly takes.

“There are some things that can go wrong, mostly user error on my part. We had some AC issues and we lost everything and we had to start over,” he recalled. Still, “this is a viable business and it’s a great opportunity to grow local, clean produce for our local community.”

The process is becoming more mainstream, as 2,000-plus farms are now growing hydroponic farms, a more than 5 percent increase since 2020, according to Gitnux.

Diverse Representation Announces Inaugural Symposium To Increase Black Sports Ownership

Neither the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, nor the WNBA has any majority Black owners, a fact that seems unreal given the day and age. The last remaining Black majority stakeholder in the NBA was Michael Jordan who this summer relinquished his stake in the Charlotte Hornets.

Diverse Representation’s Black Ownership In Sports Symposium wants to change this narrative.

Founded in 2018, Diverse Representation is an organization that aims to help Black agents, attorneys, managers, publicists, and financial advisors in the sports and entertainment industries gain visibility.

One way is by hosting its first-ever Black Ownership In Sports Symposium. On September 8 and 9, 2023, leading experts will meet in Atlanta to impart wisdom about overcoming challenges and achieving professional milestones. Guest speakers will also discuss ways to become stakeholders.

One featured speaker includes former NFL player Warrick Dunn, a star with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons. Now, after buying a minority stake in the Falcons, he is offering his advice on managing the business side.

“Since joining the Atlanta Falcons ownership group when I retired in 2009, it has been important for me to set an example that others could follow. That’s why I’m proud to partner with Diverse Representation to convene this first-of-its-kind forum of minority team owners,” Dunn said in a press release.

“There are currently several initiatives focused on increasing diversity at various levels of professional sports—from the coaching level to the executive level,” said Jaia Thomas, the CEO and founder of Diverse Representation. “However, there have yet to be any initiatives or intentional focus on increasing diversity at the ownership level. My goal with this symposium is to provide some tangible tools and resources to help diversify the pipeline of owners.”

The Black Ownership In Sports Symposium is just one of many initiatives that Diverse Representation has run to help aspiring Black changemakers accomplish their goals. For more details, visit www.diverserepresentation.com.

Yeezys Are Going Fast After Adidas Puts Them Back On The Market With Sales Of $560M

After severing ties with Ye in 2022, athletic apparel company Adidas returned its Yeezy products to its website for sale. That decision proved wise, as Adidas received more orders than anticipated due to the high demand for the shoe.

According to Insider, the sports brand has received orders reportedly worth 508 million euros ($564 million). That beats any estimates the company forecasted before deciding to make the product available for sale. Adidas initially planned to write the Yeezy product off for $500 million. Shareholder pressure made the company change direction earlier in 2023.

The demand for the Yeezy product is so high that not all requests for the shoe can be processed, according to a report by Financial Times.

While no figures or percentages were disclosed, Adidas stated that a portion of the sales from Yeezys would go toward fighting discrimination, hate, racism, and antisemitism.

Organizations expected to benefit from the sale of Yeezys include the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Philonise & Keeta Floyd Institute for Social Change, among others.

The Yeezy products available on the website were existing designs that were supposed to go on sale in 2023 before Adidas terminated its agreement with the artist formerly known as Kanye West.

After being in a successful business relationship with Ye for nearly 10 years, Adidas cut ties with the controversial music producer after he made anti-Semitic statements.

In 2022, when Ye appeared on Revolt’s “Drink Champs” podcast that has since been deleted online, he dared the apparel company to act when he said, “I can say anti-Semitic things, and Adidas can’t drop me. Now what?”

Adidas did exactly that shortly after Ye’s statements were brought to light.

According to Architectural Digest, the Wild ‘N Out host bought homes for all the mothers of his children; details are unknown. Architectural Digest also found out that Cannon has a sizable real estate portfolio boasting properties for his parents, for his ex-wife Mariah Carey, and purchases from his college days.

Cannon arrived on the big screen in 2002 with the drama-romance Drumline, and bought his beloved parents and reportedly purchased his grandparents a home that same year. He also had his own pad near San Diego that he purchased for $421,000. In 2019, he sold it for $603,500, according to the Los Angeles Times.

When the television host married singer Mariah Carey, the couple purchased a home in Bel Air valued at $6.975 million In 2009. Architectural Digest said that after Cannon and Carey went their separate ways, Cannon sold the home in 2015 for $9 million. That same year, he rented to own a secluded house in New Jersey for their kids at $11,000 per month, TMZ reported.

By 2016, Cannon’s life offscreen wasn’t unlike his character’s in Drumline. Like Devon Miles, he attended an HBCU, DCist reported. The young actor added to his real estate portfolio and purchased an apartment while enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

After Sticking Beside Her, Carlee Russell’s Ex-Boyfriend Is ‘Disgusted’ By Kidnapping Hoax

A few days after Carlee Russell’s now ex-boyfriend pleaded with the internet to stop “bullying” her, Thomar Simmons is speaking out after learning the truth about her much publicized and fraudulent disappearance.

In an Instagram post, Simmons said he and his family are “disgusted from the outcome of the entire situation.” “Carlee’s actions created hurt, confusion, and dishonesty,” he wrote. “I strongly feel exactly like you all—blindsided with Carlee’s actions.”

A post shared by Thomar Latrell Simmons (@tee_sims28)

During a press conference on July 24 2023,, Russell’s lawyer, Emery Anthony, read a statement announcing that Russell’s disappearance was nothing but a hoax, according to WBAL TV.

“There was no kidnapping on Thursday, July 13, 2023,” Anthony read. “My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave the Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have any help in this incident—this was a single act done by herself.”

Anthony said his client was apologetic over her actions and asked people to pray for Carlee “as she addresses her issues and attempts to move forward, understanding that she made a mistake in this matter.” Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said the Russell family was scheduled to meet with officials to further discuss what happened but instead received the statement.

Simmons previously warned people against bullying Russell, 26. “Think about her mental health. She doesn’t deserve that. She doesn’t. Nobody deserves to be cyberbullied,” he said.

After Hoover police identified suspicion in Russell’s story, including her googling things like, “Do you have to pay for an Amber Alert?,” they are now working with prosecutors to discuss potential criminal charges.

Since returning home from her quote-unquote ordeal, the nursing student has since been fired from her job at an Alabama spa.

Shuwanza Goff

Biden Administration Hires First Black Women As Director of Legislative Affairs

The Biden Administration is shaking things up with its new hire. Shuwanza Goff has been named the White House’s new director of legislative affairs, The Associated Press reports.

Goff, 38, is a veteran congressional aide who served as Biden’s main point of contact to the House at the start of his administration. This appointment will make her the first Black woman in this role. She is taking over for former director, Louisa Terrell.

In a statement, President Joe Biden, described Goff as a “proven leader and trusted voice on both sides of the aisle.” He broke down how her leadership played a key role in numerous initiatives during the first two years of his term including the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and tax and health care packages.

“Shuwanza’s close partnership with my decades-long friends in the House and Senate, and her expertise, instincts, and deep respect for the United States Congress will continue to serve our Administration and the American people well,” Biden said.

She steps into the role with her work cut out for her. Over the next few weeks, the Virginia native will be tasked with making sure Biden’s agenda stays intact while engaging with the House Republican Conference as well as working through the reauthorization process of the Federal Aviation Administration.

With her previous experience as senior aide to Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), leaders like House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) say Goff is more than qualified to get the job done. “Shuwanza is a friend and members of Congress on both sides of the aisle know that she is a policy professional with the experience and institutional knowledge of both the legislative and executive branch,” McCarthy said.

“The White House,” he added, “is lucky to have her back.”

Previously, Goff was part of the lobbying team at Cornerstone Government Affairs, according to The Hill.

Chef And James Beard Nominee Partners With Project House To Restore Houston’s Legendary Eldorado Ballroom

Chris Williams, the acclaimed chef at Houston’s famed Southern restaurant Lucille’s, plans to restore Eldorado Ballroom to its former glory.

Third Ward in Houston is home to the Eldorado Ballroom, a space that provided African American artists a safe haven to showcase their talents in the Jim Crow South. Founded by Clarence and Anna Johnson Duprree, the ballroom is noted for providing a stage for esteemed artists to perform and jumpstarting the careers of newer artists. The ballroom also served as a social hub for people to party without the stresses of segregation.

According to Essence, renowned artists that have graced the stage at Eldorado Ballroom include Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Louis Armstrong.

In 1970, after the death of her husband, Anna Johnson Dupree decided to sell the building. During this time, the condition of the neighborhood was beginning to wane. To save the building from being demolished, it was purchased by Hubert Finklestein, who donated it to Project Row Houses in 1999.

According to its site, Project Row Houses is a non-profit organization that serves to enrich communities through servicing the needs of underserved communities. When the organization began to rebuild the community, reestablishing Eldorado was a priority Project Row Houses knew whom to call.

“This actually started with Project Row Houses when they were gifted the building nine years ago,” Williams told Essence. “They wanted to start a project to bring the Eldorado back to its former glory. Anita Smith and Hasty Johnson from Hines Development reached out to see if I had any ideas, and, for me, being a part of the project was a no-brainer.”

The new Eldorado will feature a cafe and art gallery. The cafe will cater to a broad audience and provide opportunities for chefs to gain exposure. The gallery will do more than provide artists a chance to sell their work.

“This is not just teaching kids to finger paint. We want them to know the business side of art,” Williams said.

Williams’ goal is to rekindle the culture and beauty of Eldorado from the past. The ballroom will feature stage performances from artists, book signings, as well as a partnership with KTSU Radio.

Fajr Atiya Williams

Questions Sparked After Black Special Needs Student Dies On New Jersey School Bus

A family is mourning the death of Fajr Atiya Williams after someone they trusted wasn’t paying attention.

Williams, a nonverbal special needs child, was strangled by her wheelchair harness on the way to Claremont Elementary in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and now the bus driver is facing charges, My Central Jersey reports. Amanda Davila, a school bus aide for Montauk Transit Services, was charged on July 20 with second-degree manslaughter and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

John McDonald, a prosecutor for Somerset County, says that after Davila secured Williams in her seat, the child slumped down during the bumpy ride, causing the four-point harness to tighten around her neck and block her airway. Davila, who was seated toward the front of the bus, had been using her cell phone with earbuds in her ears.

Williams’ mother, Najmah Nash, said her daughter suffered from a rare health condition called Emanuel syndrome, which causes learning challenges as well as growth and development challenges. Nash learned of her daughter’s passing after receiving a phone call from the school reporting that she was unresponsive and CPR was being performed. After being taken to Robert Wood Johnson Specialized Hospital, the child died.

“Something went very wrong today with transportation and someone needs to be held responsible,” Nash said. “This doesn’t need to happen to anyone else. We need to love on our kids and make sure they are being taken care of when we put them in the hands of the hands of any board of education.”

The Montauk Transit Services released a statement, according to CNN, regarding the tragic incident. “All of our employees know that the safety of children we transport is our top priority, which is why we are fully engaged in the law enforcement investigation and support any punishment that the justice system determines appropriate for the bus monitor who has been arrested,” the statement read.

Fajr Atiya Williams‘ family has launched a GoFundMe page to help raise $10,000 for the victim’s funeral and medical expenses.

Formerly Incarcerated Man Who Spent 42 Years On Death Row Opens Art Exhibit ‘We Are the Willing’ In Detroit

A prisoner who was falsely accused of murdering a white student in 1974 and spent more than four decades behind bars has channeled his experience into art.

Gary Tyler held his first solo art exhibition in Detroit after spending close to 42 years imprisoned at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola. The art event was sponsored by Library Street Collective, World Socialist Web Site reported. Allison Glenn was the curator.

Art often mimics or replicates things in life that impact people in big ways. Tyler’s work features self-portraits of his time in prison, Library Street Collective noted. The prisoner-turned-artist used textiles to create the images. His work, also consisting of appliqué quilts, gives glimpses of his transformation from a young teenager to a man in prison. Tyler learned appliqué patterning in prison, according to World Socialist Web Site.

The exhibition was titled “We are the Willing.” Tyler came up with the exhibition title from the Angola Prison drama club’s motto, according to the Collective. The artist was president of the club for 28 years, where he encouraged prisoners to develop literacy and self-expression. World Socialist Web Site reported Tyler turned to the arts to get through his time in prison. Now a free man, he uses his skills to fight injustice.

Tyler became Louisiana’s youngest death row inmate at age 16 for a murder he did not commit. According to The Bay State Banner, a white youth was shot among a mob of white students throwing items at a bus of Black students. The Black students were bussed over to Destrehan High School due to a desegregation order. The World Socialist Web Site reported a gunshot fired from outside the bus killed the white youth. But police framed Tyler as the murderer, even though he was inside the bus at the time of the gunshot.

The Supreme Court did away with the death sentence altogether in 1976. Still, Tyler remained in prison for 41 and one-half years until he was released in 2016.
