Banks Are Abandoning Small Mortgages, Pushing Customers To Risky, Poorly Regulated Alternatives

American banks are abandoning the small-mortgage market, leaving customers to navigate risky home loan alternatives that could leave them homeless or in significant debt.

The Hill reports banks are losing interest in writing mortgages for inexpensive homes. In 2003, the average home cost less than $200,000, and banks regularly approved mortgages for $100,000. Today, the average home costs $437,000 and homebuyers are having a hard time finding a bank that will write a mortgage for less than $150,000.

That has forced homebuyers to find alternative financing through property loans, lease purchase agreements, land contracts, and seller-financed mortgages. These alternative methods typically are more expensive than a traditional mortgage and don’t come with the same regulatory protections.

These financing methods can leave homebuyers vulnerable to fraud and tricks that can result in buyers losing their homes and their money. Many people use alternative methods to purchase homes due to low credit scores or to circumvent a down payment.

“People think that they are on the path to owning their own home, when in fact they are on a path to financial disaster, forfeiting all of the money that they have paid in, as well as the place that they thought was their home,” Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN.) told The Hill. “Too often, these contracts are designed to fail.”

According to the Financial Times, banks have benefited from higher interest rates throughout the pandemic. However, three years of relatively low defaults due to pandemic-era stimulus payments is starting to change and banks are feeling the brunt of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Times reports the six largest U.S. banks, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs, are predicted to write off $5 billion in defaulted loans for the second quarter of this year.

That hasn’t stopped consumer advocates from pointing the finger at the banks, saying they’re growing reluctant to approve loans in the $100,000 range because they don’t turn a significant profit. Additionally, each mortgage a bank approves now costs the banks more money than in previous years.

The abandonment of small loans is mostly affecting homebuyers in the Midwest as opposed to New York and California where the streets are littered with million-dollar homes. It’s also affecting minority home buyers who typically can’t put down as much for a down payment and have lower credit scores.

Commercial real estate loans are also hurting banks as the work-from-home revolution in large cities such as Los Angeles shows no signs of slowing down despite cities and employers desperately pushing to get workers back in the office.

Rena Queen’s ‘Potty Pillow’ Is The 1st Of Its Kind And Will Revolutionize Your Bathroom Experience

Rena Queen’s ‘Potty Pillow’ Is The 1st Of Its Kind And Will Revolutionize Your Bathroom Experience

Going to the bathroom does not have to be uncomfortable.

One flush away from having a comfortable hideout from a busy life embodies Rena Queen’s idea for her Potty Pillow brand. Queen was born and raised in Liberia before relocating to the U.S. During a 14-year war in her home country, she often sought out her bathroom as a place to have some alone time, as she had several cousins who lived with her. Once she became a mom, she found herself also “needing a little me time.” Understanding that the bathroom is not the most comfortable place in our homes, Queen was inspired to create Potty Pillow.

Queen’s life was revolutionized the day she used a pillow on her toilet to provide comfort on the typical cold and hard toilet seat. Potty Pillow is a startup in Minnesota providing a “new luxury lumbar support pillow that slides onto a toilet lid.” The pillow not only provides a comfortable seat, but it supports people who are pregnant, experiencing back pain, recovering from surgery, or elderly.

Rena Queen shared the details of her innovative idea with BLACK ENTERPRISE.

As a young girl, Rena Queen knew she was destined to become an entrepreneur. At an early age, she began selling items with her grandmother to help support her family. She went from selling fresh fish around the city to starting a rental car business with a partner that continues to flourish today.

Potty Pillow

When asked about Potty Pillow, Queen shared how this innovation provides a comfortable bathroom experience and why she feels it is a daily necessity. As a product that was designed with a focus on the consumer, the product “combines the benefits of ergonomic lumbar support and premium materials to provide unparalleled support, comfort, and well-being to users while on the toilet.” Potty Pillow enhances the traditional pillow by providing an aesthetic solution that encourages proper posture to reduce discomfort when going to the bathroom. “The ergonomic design, lumbar support, and premium vegan leather materials ensure a luxurious and comfortable bathroom experience.” The product is water-resistant, easy to clean, and provides a worry-free environment. Queen shares that Potty Pillow is compatible with most toilets making it “an ideal choice for various users.”

The Design

Queen reflected on the Potty Pillow design and how it supports pregnant and postpartum mothers. When designing Potty Pillow, Queen considered the discomfort, pain, swelling, and frequency of bathroom visits experienced by pregnant and postpartum women. She wanted to create a pillow that caters to the need of pregnant and postpartum women to “enhance comfort and support during bathroom visits” and create a “more relaxed, luxurious, comfortable and stress-free experience during this important phase of life.”

Customer Feedback

The feedback from customers about their satisfaction with Potty Pillow has been positive. Queen received feedback from one customer who said, “My elderly parents just received their potty pillow and loved it! My dad has an autoimmune disorder and is semi-disabled, and this is perfect for him to have the support and comfort.” Overall, customers have given great feedback on the product’s added comfort.

A New Approach

After successfully launching the product through a Kickstarter campaign, Queen says future marketing will focus on “a multi-faceted approach.” This will include targeting online marketing and healthcare professionals such as physical therapy and orthopedic doctors. The most important marketing strategy the team will focus on is “word of mouth from customers and supporters of the product.”

During the expansion of Potty Pillow, Queen has plans for the future involving “growth, innovation, collaboration and giving back to the community as well as the planet.” Queen is committed to reaching consumers that can significantly benefit from the product. The product also uses eco-friendly material to minimize its impact on the environment and supports initiatives such as One Tree Planted to encourage a sustainable future for the environment.

Homeless To Hollywood: Tiffany Haddish Crashed Weddings For Food Before Her Big Break

Desperate times called for desperate measures, including crashing weddings, for comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish.

According to People, Haddish used to make speeches at weddings when she was homeless and without food.

The claim to fame in Hollywood can be uncertain. Not everyone makes it; many actors and actresses have spoken about experiencing homelessness before hitting it big. Haddish knew what it was like to be homeless and hungry long before she started cashing checks.

The comedian said she spoke at weddings for the free food and beverages before her break on the big screen. The Independent reported Haddish reflected on being homeless via Instagram. According to the outlet, she said, “I look at this picture and want to cry tears of joy for this Girl. I remember that night. She [herself] was homeless, hungry, scared, and hurt.”

Haddish told People in an interview, “I would have two or three drinks, and then I would grab the microphone and be like, ‘I just want to say that you are the most beautiful couple,'” according to People.

If you thought Haddish was crashing the weddings of people she knew, think again. The actress, who played Dina in Girls Trip, said she used to crash strangers’ weddings. People reported Haddish said, “I’ve crashed weddings before, given a speech, and didn’t know anybody there.” Always the jokester, Haddish added, “Everybody would be looking at me like, ‘Who is this Black girl at our wedding?'”

The comedian is proud of how far she has come since being homeless. According to The Independent, she said, “Tiffany Sara Cornilia Haddish, I Love and Approve of you, and most of all, God does too. You are perfect enough for both of us right now and always.”

Haddish is looking at matrimonial ceremonies differently these days. She plays a detective who investigates the death of a groom in the Apple TV+ series The Afterparty, which airs on Wednesday nights.

NYU, New York

Whites Only: NYU Hosts Anti-Racism Workshop For White Public School Parents

The prestigious New York University is getting the side eye for hosting an anti-racism workshop for white people only, the New York Post reported.

The six-month-long workshop catered to parents of white public school students, and legal experts fear that the school violated civil rights laws. Costing $360 per person, the workshops were hosted by the Education Justice Research and Organizing Collaborative and, according to the website, were “designed specifically for white public school parents in New York City committed to becoming anti-racist and to collaboratively building equitable, powerful, multiracial parents communities in their schools.”

While the workshop description, now unlisted, never mentioned Black people being forbidden from taking the class, days before the workshop, organizers presented a handout entitled “Why a White Space” that listed different reasons for “white-only” discussions, coming from the nonprofit Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere. They argued that white people need spaces to “unlearn racism” without being subjected to minorities and to “undue trauma or pain.”

One of the parents even questioned the seminar, arguing that not including Black people and other people of color seemed “a little counterintuitive.” NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education Justice Research group Associate Director Barbara Gross said it was for their own good. “People of color are dealing with racism all the time,” Gross said, according to Washington Free Beacon. “Like every minute of every day. It’s a harm on top of a harm for them to hear our racist thoughts.”

Lawyers said that’s not how things work. Dan Morenoff, executive director of the American Civil Rights Project, says the workshop “almost certainly” violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act — an act that governs recipients of federal funding for nonprofit schools like New York University (NYU). Another lawyer, Samantha Harris, said running a “whites only” program in the name of social justice is misguided. “I find it inconceivable that the people putting these programs together don’t see the irony,” Harris said.

Starting in February 2022 – Black History Month – this workshop just concluded its fourth year. Starting out of the Black Lives Matter movement and George Floyd’s killing, the research group claimed there was a growing interest in learning how to be anti-racist.

Viral Video Of UPS Driver Asking To Be Hosed Down Sparks Debate About Working Conditions

We all know the brown uniformed UPS delivery drivers but recently concerns have risen regarding the working conditions of the drivers responsible for keeping up the company’s good reputation.

In a recent viral video posted to TikTok, UPS driver Rakesha Sanders is seen asking a homeowner to spray her down with a water hose in order to combat the heat.

@rakeshasanders One thing im not scared to do is ask lol. Its too hot out here today. #FastTwitchContest #viral #viral #fyp #foryou #foryou #fypシ #foryoupage #xyzbca #CapCut #k18results #funny #upsdeliverydriver #ups #upsdriver #upswoman #hot #upsdrivers #upsdriverproblems #upsdrivercoolingoff ♬ original sound – Rakesha Sanders

Sanders regularly shares her experiences as a UPS driver and the vast majority of her stories are quite pleasant; however, comments posted underneath the video were full of mixed responses. While some felt the moment was a true testament to the good faith nature of the resident’s willingness to help her cool down, others pointed out the unjust and inhumane conditions many workers are subjected to. “I sure hope y’all get A/C in those trucks soon. Appreciate your hard work,” one commenter wrote. Another responded, “They need to put air conditioning in the trucks. It is unbearable in the summer.”

According to NBC, on hot days the internal temperature of UPS trucks can soar to over 140 degrees, and fear of heat stroke can cause many drivers to turn to extreme measures to remain cool as the trucks are not outfitted with air conditioning units. Many of the company’s loading facilities are also without cooling units. Since 2015, over 100 UPS workers have been hospitalized for heat-related illnesses across 23 states. There are currently no plans in place to add air conditioning units to UPS’ fleet of vehicles or their facilities and the U.S. government does not have rules in place regarding heat exposure that workers can use to plead their case.

Mondaire Jones, Chuck Schumer

Mondaire Jones Announces Comeback Bid For New York House Seat

Mondaire Jones launched a comeback bid for the New York House of Representatives on July 4, through a masterfully crafted campaign video.

Jones’ tagline for his campaign is centered around how personal this race is for him and, on his website, his announcement video featured this theme prominently. Jones emphasized his working-class background, positioning himself as someone who is interested first and foremost in the well-being of New York’s workers.

Jones came across as a relatable figure, as he discussed how important community and family and, in particular, his mother, are to him. Jones, who is the first openly gay Black congressional representative, formerly held the position in 2020.

Jones is running against the sister of Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, Liz Whitmer Gereghty, for the Democratic nomination in New York’s 17th Congressional District. Gereghty is expected to position herself as a moderate Democrat in her effort to flip the House seat from Republican incumbent Mike Lawler.

According to his website, Jones was responsible for negotiating the passage of the bipartisan Infrastructure Act as well as getting the American Rescue Plan Act passed. Both of these legislative actions helped to establish Jones as a rising star in the Democratic party and also led to him being named the most legislatively active freshman in Congress during his term.

Though Jones was a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus during his tenure, he still voted to increase police funding and to give Israel more money for their Iron Dome project. Both of these were moves that did not sit well with leftists and seemed inconsistent with Jones’ general platform, as he supported the Green New Deal and Medicare for All. Jones seems aware of this, as he took a little time to discuss his past choice to vote for increased police funding in his announcement video.

Jones elected not to run for the position last cycle after gerrymandered redistricting shuffled the area he would be representing. Jones seemed to regret that choice as he told News 12 Westchester in an interview: “I never imagined that I would wake up one day and would have to decide against primarying a member of the Democratic party at a time when we were seeing an assault on our democracy,” Jones explained. “To that extent, yeah, I do regret not being the Democratic nominee last cycle.”

Jones talked to Intelligencer, New York Magazine‘s political arm, in August of 2022, revealing his motivations for switching from the 17th district to the 10th district. Jones remarked, “My residence was drawn into the same district where Jamal Bowman had announced his candidacy. My options were to run against a fellow Black progressive and one of the few people who fully appreciates the threats that we face as a nation in this moment or to run against the chair of the DCCC, whose primary job responsibility it is to help us keep our majority and defeat fascism in America.”
During that interview, Jones stressed many of the points that he hit in his campaign video, including the concept that for him, as an openly gay Black man, politics is personal. He also briefly addressed the distrust that some have had with the Democratic Party as a whole and communicated that the party needs more members who are willing to stand up and fight the Republican Party. Jones noted during the interview that the Republican party is full of fascists and its issues extended well beyond then-President Donald J. Trump. Jones also remarked that any serious candidate had better be prepared to deal with that reality.

Clarence Thomas

Investigation Reveals Clarence Thomas’ Aide Received Venmo Payments From Lawyers

Clarence Thomas’ name is under fire again—but this time for money dealings with one of his aides.

Investigations found several lawyers made payments using Venmo to Rajan Vasisht, who served as Thomas’s aide from July 2019 to July 2021, The Guardian reports. Vasisht’s Venmo account shows that he received seven different payments between November and December 2019 from lawyers who worked as the Supreme Court justice’s legal clerks. While the amount of each payment was revealed, each one was listed with a purpose – including “Christmas party”, “Thomas Christmas Party”, “CT Christmas Party” or “CT Xmas party” – and referenced Thomas’ initials.

The lawyers involved in the scandal are: Patrick Strawbridge, Kate Todd, Elbert Lin, and Brian Schmalzbach. Strawbridge is a legal partner who recently argued affirmative action violated the constitution, while Todd served as the deputy counsel under the Trump administration. Elbert Lin is a former solicitor general of West Virginia who was a key component in a Supreme Court case regarding the Environmental Protection Agency and Schmalzbach is also a legal partner with years of experience arguing cases before the Supreme Court.

It is unknown what the funds were for as according to Vasisht’s resume, his duties while working for Thomas included assisting the justice with the administrative needs of his chambers like personal correspondence and managing his personal and office schedule.

Several legal experts say the payments issued wave major red flags on top of the other money issues Thomas is facing, like his relationships with wealthy billionaire donors. Former President George W. Bush’s chief White House ethics lawyer, Richard Painter, says the payments are simply “not appropriate.” “There is no excuse for it. Thomas could invite them to his Christmas party and he could attend Christmas parties, as long as they are not discussing any cases,” Painter said, according to Salon. Kendric Payne, general counsel and senior director of ethics at the Campaign Legal Center, thinks the public deserves an explanation.

Black-Owned Food Brand ‘Mama’s Biscuits’ Is Changing The Game With All-Natural, ‘Unheard Of’ Flavors

For Lesley Riley, growing up in a tight-knit family, preparing food was a team effort. These cooking efforts led her to open her first restaurant in 2000 and cook up some of America’s favorite biscuits. The “biscuit darling” launched her Black-owned, women-led brand, Mama’s Biscuits, with a recipe that offered an all-natural, clean-label, ready-to-eat biscuit to the market.

“Both my grandparents made sure that preparing food wasn’t a task left to just one individual,” Riley told BLACK ENTERPRISE. “Everyone in the household had a hand in preparing and cooking meals. It was how we bonded as [a] family. So over time, cooking [and] baking became a therapeutic activity for me.”

Riley created her unique recipe in October 2014, before launching her online store in May 2015. Facing challenges like scaling and capital to get her biscuits on retail shelves, Riley rebranded in 2019 and figured out how to produce her products on a major scale, within budget and without compromising quality.

Mama’s Biscuits, The Only Clean-Label Biscuit on the Market

Riley shared that she drew inspiration from her childhood memories of food and family meals when creating Mama’s Biscuits. “I try to recreate that feeling of innocent childhood love and nostalgia with every bite. The biscuit is like a hug from your mom or grandma. It makes you feel good. That’s the feeling I want you to leave with,” she said.

The history-making gourmet biscuits stand apart from other brands’ recipes as she has introduced “unheard-of” flavors to the market. “Our products offer convenience-driven shoppers great-tasting, ‘heat-and-eat’ options made with simple ingredients [like] real dairy and butter,” Riley said, noting the highly processed foods that traditionally fill the frozen grocery aisle.

“I love to constantly push the boundaries of balancing flavors and pairing the right ingredients with each other to create a unique, delicious experience,” she continued. Mama’s Biscuits offers flavors such as her original buttermilk flavor, Bananas Foster with Salted Caramel, Chicken Pot Pie, Spiced Mango, and Kahlua Stuffed Brie.

Mama’s Biscuits are sold in over 5,000 retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Target, Kroger, Mariano’s, and Wegmans.

Mama’s Biscuits Incubator

Riley’s brand-new Mama’s Biscuits Culinary Incubator lives on the campus of Hagerstown Community College. The newly formed partnership with the community college began in May 2022 to offer mentorship to entrepreneurs in the culinary space. Mama’s Biscuits Culinary Incubator offers hourly use of a commercial kitchen, on-site mentorship, business development, financial investment, and other support to entrepreneurs producing food and beverage packaged goods.

“This is an honor and a full circle moment for me,” Riley shared. “The Culinary Incubator mentors and inspires the next generation of food and beverage startup companies.”

She explained that the Culinary Incubator currently mentors 15 food and beverage product owners, “leveraging the commercial kitchen and mentorship to develop sustainable products consumers will value, generationally.”

Feeding Faith Initiative

Mama’s Biscuits is a brand with a mission to serve and continue to give back to the community. “Our commitment comes [with] giving back through both [of] our initiatives, ‘Feeding Faith‘ and ‘Biscuits & Blanket,'” Riley said.

Through both initiatives, the brand collaborates with local and national organizations to offer services, provide care bags, and supply other resources. “Our call to action starts with our valued community. We started ‘Feeding Faith’ because sometimes we all need a little help. We teamed up with local agencies such as the Department of Aging, Frederick Rescue Mission, Religious Coalition Shelter, Frederick Community College, and Community Action to donate hundreds/thousands of biscuits every month,” the Mama’s Biscuits website read.

“The Feeding Faith Initiative is a program based on both my and my company’s core values, Hebrews 11:1. It’s important that we meet people where they are,” Riley explained.

“When we feed you, we always remind you to keep the faith.”

Expanding the Mama’s Biscuits Team

“It’s an exciting time,” Riley shared. “We are just getting started.”

Mama’s Biscuits brand has expanded its team into the breakfast category with its newly-themed breakfast sandwich line set to launch in major retailers in late Fall 2023.

Riley will make history again through her brand following its launch of the first plant-based, soy-free biscuit sandwich on the market. “The exciting partnership between Mama’s Biscuits, JUST Egg, and Beyond Meat is a huge opportunity,” she said. The sandwich will land in major retailers and expand to coffee shops, universities, schools, hospitals, and food services.

Olympic Runner, Caster Semenya, Wins Discrimination Case, Still Fights Against Testosterone Rules

July 11, 2023, marked a significant victory for 32-year-old Olympic champion runner Caster Semenya.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled that the actions taken towards the runner were discrimination. Regulations enacted by World Athletics required Semenya to reduce her natural hormone levels through medical interventions such as daily contraceptive pills, hormone-blocking injections, or surgery.

This rule denied Semenya the opportunity to compete for four years, at a time when she was reaching a peak in her career. Semenya was awarded an Olympic gold medal in 2012 and 2016 in the 800-meter event. She could not participate in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games due to the rule.

Semenya has a condition known as differences in sex development (DSDs) that results in a natural elevation in her testosterone levels, according to The Associated Press. Semenya’s assigned sex at birth is female, and she has always identified as female. World Athletics, unable to attest to Semnya’s legal gender, argued her condition gives her the same XY chromosome patterns as a male, and gives her traits and an athletic edge similar to male athletes.

Upset by these claims, Semenya views her testosterone levels as a gift, similar to a tall basketball player or a swimmer with longer arms.

However, according to the outlet, the Strasbourg, France, court ruled this regulation was an encroachment on Semenya’s human rights.

The case went from the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport to the Swiss Supreme Court. Although the Swiss Supreme Court ruled in Semenya’s favor with a 4-3 decision by a panel of human rights judges, the rule remains in effect, according to the outlet.

World Athletics stated, “We remain of the view that the…regulations are a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of protecting fair competition in the female category as the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Swiss Federal Tribunal both found.”

The victory for Semenya is a small step towards having the rule removed by World Athletics. The rule to regulate testosterone levels was enacted for female athletes only. Male athletes do not have a limit for testosterone levels. According to World Athletics, the regulations affect Semenya and “a number” of athletes.

Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving’s Stepmom to Become First Black Woman Agent to Negotiate, Complete NBA Contract

Kyrie Irving’s hiring of stepmom Shetellia Riley Irving makes her the only Black woman agent currently representing an NBA player, but her stats themselves are also making waves in the league.

The former vice president of ad sales at BET is reportedly at the helm of a three-year, $126 million deal of behalf of her stepson and his move from the Brooklyn Nets to the Dallas Mavericks, according to the Associated Press.

Irving seemingly confirmed the transition, tweeting “Da11as” from his account, with his jersey number replacing letters in the city’s spelling.

https://twitter.com/KyrieIrving/status/1674933191386202113?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1674933191386202113%7Ctwgr%5E72fa832e8836b9fa6ebde99b9fe98dce49f50b43%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fafrotech.com%2Fagent-shetellia-riley-irving-kyrie-irving-nba-contract

In March 2022, Riley was appointed as Irving’s agent. Shams Charania broke the news via Twitter of her groundbreaking contract a little over a year later .

Her successful business dealings come months after her Sports Illustrated profile, which detailed how she went from stepmom to sports agent.

“We’ve built trust and consistency. I don’t want Kyrie to come back two years from now saying, ‘I signed this really bad deal and it didn’t make sense,’ because he didn’t understand it, or it was just about a money grab. That’s something that we’re really being intentional about, especially in the things that we look to align ourselves with.”

Irving went on to thank his agent and their family-led team, including his father (and Riley’s former husband) as business manager, in a tweet about their help throughout the process,

https://twitter.com/KyrieIrving/status/1674921301830426624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1674921301830426624%7Ctwgr%5E72fa832e8836b9fa6ebde99b9fe98dce49f50b43%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fafrotech.com%2Fagent-shetellia-riley-irving-kyrie-irving-nba-contract

While official confirmation is sealed until free agency is over, Riley Irving is on track to become a part of NBA history. It’s clear her business acumen speaks for itself, as well as paving the way for fellow Black women agents to take the lead on sports contracts.

“I think the only or the biggest weight on my shoulders was the fact that there were so many other people watching to see how well I did this,” the groundbreaking agent shared to SI. “Because if I do this, right, it opens the door for so many other Black women. And we get a chance to have more than a seat at the table.”
