Actor Jussie Smollett Handed Five Months In Jail For Hate Crime Hoax

Actor Jussie Smollett Handed Five Months In Jail For Hate Crime Hoax

On Thursday, even as former Empire actor Jussie Smollett protested his innocence, he was sentenced to 150 days in jail, 30 months of felony probation, and ordered to pay restitution of more than $120,000 and a $25,000 fine for lying on police reports in a hate crime hoax in January 2019.

According to CNN, after his sentencing was read, Smollett pulled down his mask and addressed the judge by doubling down on proclaiming his innocence.

“Your honor, I respect you and I respect the jury, but I did not do this,” Smollett said. “And I am not suicidal. And if anything happens to me when I go in there, I did not do it to myself. And you must all know that.”

Judge James Linn admonished 39-year-old Smollett about his actions that cost the city of Chicago time, money and resources.

“There’s a side of you that has this arrogance, and selfishness and narcissism that’s just disgraceful,” the judge said. “You’re not a victim of a racial hate crime, you’re not a victim of a homophobic hate crime. You’re just a charlatan pretending to be a victim of a hate crime, and that’s shameful.”

He continued:

“You’ve destroyed your life as you knew it,” he said. “There is nothing any sentencing judge could do compared to the damage you’ve already done.”

As BLACK ENTERPRISE previously reported, the now disgraced former Empire star was found guilty of five counts of disorderly conduct for making false crime reports to Chicago police, saying he was a hate crime victim in 2019.

Smollett was found guilty on five of the six counts of disorderly conduct — one count for each separate time he was charged with lying to police after the attack, according to USA Today.
On the sixth count, Smollett was acquitted of lying to a detective in February, several weeks after he initially claimed he was attacked.
Two Canadian Brothers Launch NFT Sneaker Auction Years After Losing Court Battle With eBay

Two Canadian Brothers Launch NFT Sneaker Auction Years After Losing Court Battle With eBay

Inspired by sneaker culture and driven by injustice, Montreal-based brothers Kevin and Thierry Mofo are launching their first NFT sneaker, minted on the Ethereum blockchain and set to be auctioned.

The origin story behind the NFT sneaker is deeply embedded in the duo’s brand, Soles For Justice. Back in 2012, Nike released the highly anticipated Air Foamposite Galaxy 1 to coincide with the NBA All-Star Game. The limited-edition shoes, made popular by the legendary former NBA player Penny Hardaway, were in high demand and prompted the Mofo brothers to jump on the opportunity.

The pair advertised the shoes on eBay before purchasing them the following day for $280 plus tax, CBC News previously reported in 2018. After waiting 30 hours at a Montreal store, they were shocked to later see the bids increase from $50,000 to maxing out with a bid of $98,000.

However, eBay suspected fraudulence. Quebec’s Superior Court Judge ordered eBay to pay the Mofo brothers $86,700 in damages, but the award was a short-lived victory. eBay appealed, and the Court of Appeal ruled the auction site was justified in canceling the sale in order to protect the security of its customers.

Today, Kevin and Thierry are on a mission to raise awareness of user agreement policies on platforms and spark conversations about the control of eCommerce and big tech. Soles For Justice, as a brand and initiative, stands to ensure that digital creators, startups, and innovators are better taken care of.

“Consumers need to begin reading between the lines and understand the importance of user agreements taking space on these technology platforms. We now live in a world where the most valuable resource is the [in]tangible digital space. It’s our data, and we urge everyone to learn its use,” the brothers told Afro Tech.

The general mint of the NFT sneaker began on February 28. According to AfroTech, the NFT sneaker can be reclaimed for an original pair of Nike Air Foamposite One Galaxy in size 10, which was purchased back in 2012. It will come brand new with its special glow-in-the-dark features. You can find further information on  OpenSea.

“These sneakers symbolize change, and we pursued litigation against eBay to make a statement rather than earn any profits,” the Mofo brothers said. “We weren’t rich, but we dared to stand up for our rights. We want consumers to be made aware of terms on digital platforms and for these tech giants to take better care of their users.”

Prominent Activist Says Prince William’s Comments About Ukraine-Russia War ‘Dehumanizes’ Black and Brown People

Prominent Activist Says Prince William’s Comments About Ukraine-Russia War ‘Dehumanizes’ Black and Brown People

Prince William‘s comments on the Russia-Ukraine war have drawn significant backlash from anti-racism activists and others.

During a visit in support of the Ukraine relief effort, the Duke of Cambridge said it’s unusual to see the fog of war.

“Everyone is horrified by what they are seeing. The news every day, it’s almost unfathomable to actually witness it, to see it,” William said. “For our generation, it’s very alien to see this in Europe. We’re all right behind you.”

After his comments, Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, a popular pundit on race in Britain told Newsweek the Prince’s comments were offensive.

“William says it’s alien in Europe,” she said. “This is on the back of two weeks of Western media also saying it’s alien in Europe, also saying Western countries are civilized. I’m sorry, if it’s alien in Europe, where is he referring to it as being normal?”

Others also condemned the comments Prince William made including race correspondent Nadine White and Dr. Martin Luther King‘s daughter Bernice King.

https://twitter.com/BerniceKing/status/1501935919544225814

Countries under the British Empire include Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the Bahamas, Australia, Belize, Barbados, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu.

Prince William’s remarks also came as he and Kate Middleton are set to tour Jamaica, Belize, and the Bahamas on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II as part of her Platinum Jubilee celebration. The timing of the comments are particularly embarrassing considering Barbados, which announced late last year that it would no longer pledge allegiance to the Queen

Mos-Shogbamimu continued: “If countries like Jamaica and all these other non-white countries take him to task on it, he’s going to have to open his God-given mouth and apologize. Not because we need an apology but because he must be held to account.”

And Mos-Shogbamimu continued: “This is coming out of the mouth of the future king of England. The person who sits at the very height of wealth and class.

“There is no justification for how Prince William could parrot the same language and rhetoric we’ve just spent the last week or two rebuffing.

“It dehumanizes the lives of black and brown people,” Mos-Shogbamimu said.

King didn’t stop there with her comments, discussing Britain’s history in Africa writing on Twitter:

“European people ran roughshod over the continent of Africa, pillaging communities, raping women, enslaving human beings, colonizing for profit and power, stealing resources, causing generational devastation. And European nations continue to harm Africa.”

White Arkansas Student Gets ‘Modified Expulsion’ After Video Shows Him Beating Black Student

White Arkansas Student Gets ‘Modified Expulsion’ After Video Shows Him Beating Black Student

A disturbing cell phone video of a fight between two Arkansas high school students is sparking a statewide discussion about bullying and unfair treatment from school administration.

The incident occurred at Fordyce High School between a Black student and a white student. In the widely-circulated footage, the Black student was seen getting punched, placed in a chokehold, and thrown to the ground after falling unconscious. In what appeared to be a school locker room, the white student continued to kick the victim in his back while he was down.

Fox 16 reported that both students were dealt a suspension for the same amount of time. The ruling prompted other high schoolers to protest the issue of bullying by organizing sit-ins in the high school hallways. They claimed the victim had come forward with previous reports of  being bullied.

“The same amount of punishment, like, that’s not right,” Enough Smith, an alumnus of the school who graduated in 2021, told Fox 16. “You can clearly see in the video that he didn’t want to fight the guy, and the guy still was picking on him, throwing shoes on him.”

According to the news outlet, the school district has reportedly given the white student a “modified expulsion.” But there have been no comments made on the Black student’s current status.

“This video came to light about two days ago and we can’t discuss student discipline because that is confidential information, Fordyce School District Superintendent Dr. Judy Hubbell told the Camden News earlier this month.

“We are in the process of investigating this case and taking care of it,” she added. “We don’t want bullying on our campus. We want to have a safe campus, but this just came to light and we are working on this, we are talking through the process.”

In response to the incident, the Arkansas Martin Luther King  Jr. Commission will be hosting a workshop for students to discuss bullying.

North Carolina Mom Speaks Out: Black Students ‘Sold’ At A Slave Auction In School

North Carolina Mom Speaks Out: Black Students ‘Sold’ At A Slave Auction In School

A North Carolina mother has revealed the details of an incident where some Black students, including her son, were sold at a slave auction at a Chatham County school. A video has even surfaced with the use of the N-word.

Ashley Palmer has been in contact with district officials regarding what occurred at J.S. Waters in Goldston last Friday.

“Our son experienced a slave auction by his classmates and when he opened up we were made aware that this type of stuff seems to be the norm so much that he didn’t think it was worth sharing,” Palmer wrote in a Facebook post Friday. “His friend ‘went for $350’ and another student was the Slavemaster because he ‘knew how to handle them.’

“We even have a video of students harmonizing the N word. Since when were children so blatantly racist?”

According to the Raleigh News & Observer, Chatham County Superintendent Anthony Jackson sent a letter to families after hearing the news of the slave auction. He said that the district had “become aware of recent incidents involving students using racially insensitive language and offensive imagery.”

On Monday, Palmer wrote in a separate Facebook post that the students who participated in the “auction” had been suspended for one day, but no action had yet been taken for the video. She also shared in the update that the student who portrayed the slavemaster “accidentally” hit her son with a baseball four times upon his return to school.

“It’s a shame my child isn’t safe at school,” Palmer wrote Monday, adding that she would be taking legal action. “Where is the staff when this is happening? Now when my son gets fed up, will they protect him the way they have protected this other child?”

Although the district has not commented on Palmer’s accusations, it thanked her in a Facebook comment to her original post, according to the News & Observer.

“We want to continue to work with you, your son, and all of our students to ensure we have an environment that is healthy, supportive, and kind,” the district said in the Facebook comment. “We are here to help you, your son, and the rest of your family through this.”

Bodycam Footage Shows Ryan Coogler Detained After Being Accused of Being A Bank Robber

Bodycam Footage Shows Ryan Coogler Detained After Being Accused of Being A Bank Robber

Bodycam footage of Ryan Coogler being detained inside of a Bank of America in Atlanta was released on Wednesday showing how the Black Panther director reacted to being mistaken for a bank robber.

Video shows Coogler was approached by police while he was standing at the bank teller counter on Jan. 7, Page Six reported. One officer pulled out a gun while detaining Coogler, who was instantly alarmed and asked,

“Whoa, whoa, what’s going on?”

Despite how surprised Coogler was by the mishap, he cooperated with the officers.

“Hands behind my back—you got it,” the Fruitvale Station director can be heard saying.

He goes on to ask, “Is there any reason y’all are doing this, bro?” However, the cops failed to provide an immediate response.

Once he was taken outside, Coogler attempted to get the officers to look at his work badge that identified who he was and possibly the major motion picture that he’s currently working on.

“If you just run my name, you’ll understand why you should take me off of these cuffs,” the famed filmmaker said, according to Page Six. “You could not do it, but it’s going to be really bad for you.”

He then advises they run his name “in Google,” but the officer appears to write it down in a notepad instead.

“I’m really trying to keep it from being a bad day on your job, bro,” Coogler adds. “Black man to black man.”

After Coogler was placed in the back of a squad car, he asked the officers to remove his sunglasses so that he could avoid having a “panic attack.”

The officers explained to Coogler that he was detained for passing a note to the bank teller asking for a large sum of money. The Creed director explained to the cops that he was seeking the money for his medical assistant who prefers to be paid in cash and only slipped the teller a note because he didn’t “feel safe.”

In the note, obtained by TMZ, Coogler wrote, “I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I’d like to be discreet.”

In released audio of the teller’s 911 call, the Bank of America employee can be heard telling the dispatcher, “I told my manager that I didn’t feel comfortable so he told me to call the police,” the employee said before reading Coogler’s note aloud. “It just says, ‘I wanna withdraw $12,000, just be discreet.'”

The dispatcher noted that the suspect probably just wanted to be discreet about taking out the large sum of money. But the teller replied,

“Yeah, I mean, he might but he’s just being weird.”

Coogler released a statement on the bank robbery mishap.

“This situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on,” Coogler toldVariety.”

WARNERMEDIA, DC AND ALLY UNITE FOR MARKETING CAMPAIGN

WarnerMedia, DC and Ally are joining forces for a marketing campaign in effort to share meaningful stories about the experiences of underrepresented creators and foster a dialogue about the importance of allyship.

The storytelling series kicked off with “SuperFan”, a video profiling Denys Cowan, co-founder of Milestone Media, in conversation with Feon Cooper and Kareem Burton, co-owners of Black Star Collectibles, the first-ever Black-owned pop culture collectibles store in Carson, CA. The video discusses the lack of Black representation in the comic book world in the 1990s and how Milestone ignited the founders of Black Star Collectibles to become the businessowners they are today.

This month, “The Power of Representation” launched as the next installment of the year-long campaign. The branded vignette from Ally and Courageous Studios focuses on Ally’s mission to promote equity and inclusion inside and outside of its organization. The branded short film will explore Ally’s approach to increasing access for marginalized members of their communities and historically disenfranchised groups.

“Ally is focused on improving financial literacy, economic mobility and access to opportunities and products that help all communities gain financial stability and independence,” said Andrea Brimmer, Chief Marketing and Public Relations Officer, Ally. “It is critical that our marketing efforts further this cause, and we believe our collaboration with DC, Milestone Media and WarnerMedia allows us to build upon our efforts for lasting social impact that directly reaches Black and Hispanic communities with generation-changing opportunities.”

WarnerMedia is leveraging the power and scope of its media properties to distribute “The Power of Representation” content across linear, digital and social media. The WarnerMedia portfolio reaches 75% of multicultural audiences in the U.S. – a total of 68 million people – across its digital and linear platforms.[1]

“The stories we are telling as a part of The Milestone Initiative illustrate a variety of perspectives and voices in an effort to further the Milestone mission of illuminating underrepresentation in comics,” said Michal Shapira, Head of Marketing Solutions and Brand Studios, WarnerMedia. “Our studios’ wide range of storytelling capabilities – from producing documentary-style video to animated stories – along with our ability to leverage our incredible IP in meaningful ways, allows us to connect with our audiences and inspire real change, across communities and society-at-large.”

Drs. Boyce Watkins and Ken Harris Join Detroit’s Leading Black Business Organizations For State of Black Business Summit

Drs. Boyce Watkins and Ken Harris Join Detroit’s Leading Black Business Organizations For State of Black Business Summit

The National Business League (NBL) Detroit Chapter, the Detroit Black Chamber of Commerce (DBCC) and the Booker T. Washington Trade Association (BTWBA) held their 12th Annual State of Black Business Summit on Monday, Mar. 7, from 8-11 a.m.

The summit and press conference took place to announce new leadership and coming together as the Detroit United Front and addressed the current state of Black business in Detroit, including the lack of support and resources that Black businesses receive from the philanthropic, public and private sectors as well as the systemic, institutional and structural neglect and exclusion of Black businesses. World-renowned speaker and scholar, Dr. Boyce Watkins, Ph.D., founder, and CEO of Boyce Watkins Enterprises, served as the summit’s keynote speaker, according to a press release

Watkins was also joined by Dr. Kenneth L. Harris, Ph.D., CEO and national president of the National Business League.

According to Forbes, “Detroit has one of the highest poverty and economic inequalities rates in the country, and one of the ways to address poverty and inequality in an 80% Black city is to support Black businesses and entrepreneurship. Black businesses should be the number-one employer of Black people,” said Chad Rhodes, Detroit entrepreneur and real estate professional.

(Image: Brahkard Lawler)

Due to the severe impact of COVID-19’s economic shutdowns in the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan, as well as the country’s racial unrest ignited by the unarmed murders of Black men and women, which sparked the global Black Lives Matter Movement in 2020, corporations made a plethora of grandiose announcements, unfulfilled commitments at numerous press conferences, appeasing platitudes and Black racial equity promises, but most companies have failed to deliver measurable results and must now be held accountable. No real economic advocacy in Detroit’s present political climate is holding the philanthropic, public and private sectors accountable for such flagrant negligence and for reneging on commitments made to the Black community, which is unacceptable. Something must be done to help Black businesses not just survive but to sustain and thrive in the marketplace.

“As a successful Black business owner in the city of Detroit, it shouldn’t be difficult to find support and resources to address the wants and needs of Black businesses, but garnering access has been extremely difficult and cumbersome. I can’t imagine what the experience is like for those needing to be hand-held through the process,” said Dr. Cecil Forbes, founder, owner and operator of iCare Spine and Rehabilitation Centers, PLLC.

In the city of Detroit, according to the 2019 census, there are more than 49,000+ Black-owned businesses out of a total of 62,000+, accounting for 80 percent of all small and medium-size firms. Even though Detroit is ranked 5th in the country for Black business formation and 1st in the country for Black women entrepreneurship, institutional hurdles, economic inequities and exclusion continue to persist. Despite having an 80 percent Black population, 80 percent of small firms are locked out of city contracts, the private sector lacks adequate supplier-diversity programs to provide Black businesses with contracting and procurement opportunities, while banks and lenders fail to lend to Black business owners at an alarming rate, further increasing the significant disparity gaps in access to capital.

“It is unacceptable that [in] a city that has a supermajority Black population around 79 percent and a supermajority of small businesses [of] 80%, that Black businesses can’t access capital or ecosystems that provide resources. Detroit needs new leadership at the table that will move the needle forward, producing measurable results in the community,” said Dr. Danielle Cato-Benson, founder, and chief executive of the HealHER Virtual Spa and 1:11 The Collective mental health resorts.

This was a historic time in which three top Black business organizations joined forces to speak out against the ongoing benign neglect of Black businesses by the philanthropic, public and private sectors. The Detroit United Front will provide much-needed, real and independent representation to serve as a true economic advocate for Black businesses in the city for those who may not have a voice while simultaneously holding the systems, institutions and structures perpetuating lack of equity and exclusion accountable.

Most of the next generation in the Black community wants to own their own businesses and make their own money, providing them the economic freedom their parents and grandparents did not experience working for someone else. Entrepreneurship will be the jobs of the future in the Black community,” said Bartel Welch, CEO of Red Diamond Digital and executive director, CODE313.

The Detroit United Front swore in its new leadership body during the State of Black Business Summit by 36th District Chief Judge William McConnico. During the meeting, the new leadership unveiled the state of Black business report. The Detroit United Front serves as the NBL’s Midwest Regional Office.

Bartel Welch, president, BTWTA (CEO, Red Diamond Digital)
Crystal L. Gunn, chairman, BTWTA (founder, The Amazing Woman Network) and their
Executive Committee leadership team

Crystal L. Gunn, founder, and CEO of the Amazing Woman Network, stated, “These times call for unprecedented leadership and new voices at the old table, or by creating a table of our own. Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. Time to disrupt the insanity that produces no results for Black businesses.”

Booker T. Washington once said, The world cares very little what you or I know, but it does care a great deal about what you and I do.” It is time for the Detroit United Front new leadership to carry on that legacy and to frame the Black business agenda for the city of Detroit,” stated Orena Perry, owner of JEADL Enterprises, LLC.
