Black Men At Center Of ‘Goon Squad’ Lawsuit Call For Stiff Punishment

Angela English, of the NAACP, also told reporters at the news conference that Mississippi's history is part of the fabric of the case.

For Eddie Parker and Michael Jenkins, this day has been a long time coming. Parker and Jenkins are the two Black men at the center of a federal civil rights lawsuit filed after the two men alleged that six white Rankin County Department officers tortured them for two hours. The two will testify in federal court about what they say they experienced at the hands of the group, which occasionally referred to itself as “The Goon Squad.” Ahead of this appearance, as CNN reports, they called for the men to receive the maximum sentence under the law.

At a March 18 news conference in Jackson, Mississippi, Parker, Jenkins, their families, and legal representatives called for justice. Malik Shabazz, the lead attorney for the two men, told reporters, “The day of justice has finally come for the Rankin County ‘Goon Squad,’” Shabazz said. “It’s an important day, not only for Mississippi, but it’s an important day for accountability, for police brutality all across America.”

Shabazz continued, “We want the maximum sentence. We want the sentences to match the crimes because the nation is watching, the world is watching, police officers are watching, the families are watching – and they want justice.”

Angela English of the NAACP also told reporters at the news conference that Mississippi’s history is part of the fabric of the case. “We can’t erase Mississippi’s past, but we can move forward today and set a precedent that has never been set before,” English said before adding, “This is not 1964; it’s 2024.”

As CNN reports, federal prosecutors intend to seek the maximum sentences for each of the officers who are facing charges. Hunter Elward faces the most serious charges, up to 30 years, for the discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. The others, Brett McAlpin, Christian Dedmon, Daniel Opdyke, Jeffrey Middleton, and former Richland Police Department officer Joshua Hartfield, face up to 20 years. As BLACK ENTERPRISE previously reported, the group pleaded guilty in August 2023 to charges of conspiracy against rights, deprivation of rights under color of law, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and obstruction of justice.

Shabazz believes that the sentencing of Elward is the barometer for what they can expect for the rest of the officers, he told CNN, “The sentence that’s given to Hunter Elward, in specific, will send a sign of how the rest of the defendants will be sentenced and it will send a great sign of how serious the judge is about doing justice,” Shabazz added that he believes the judge will “give out some strong justice.”

As WJTV reports, Elward was sentenced to 241 months (20 years) in federal prison, while Middleton will be sentenced on the afternoon of March 19. Dedmon and Opdyke will be sentenced on March 20, and Hartfield and McAlpin will be sentenced on March 21. The outlet notes that although the group agreed to the prosecutor’s recommended sentences ranging from five to 30 years, the judge is not bound by those limits.

Regardless of the length of time the six officers receive, Shabazz believes that the department’s rot is still present, despite Rankin County Department Sheriff Bryan Bailey’s claims that changes will be implemented. Shabazz, as CNN reports, is calling for a more thorough investigation into the department.

Shabazz said at the press conference that the attorneys for Parker and Jenkins will be petitioning the Justice Department to open a pattern or practice investigation into the misconduct they allege has taken place at the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department. “We absolutely believe that the ‘Goon Squad’ is not limited to the six officers facing sentencing,” he said. “We know it’s a lot deeper.”

Americans Evacuate Haiti Amid Turmoil, Rep. Cory Mills Facilitates Rescue Efforts

The ongoing turmoil in Haiti has prompted another wave of evacuations, with more Americans departing from Port-au-Prince.

The ongoing turmoil in Haiti has prompted another wave of evacuations, with more Americans departing from Port-au-Prince under the assistance of U.S. Representative Cory Mills, R-Fla. Amid escalating security concerns and the shutdown of Haiti’s primary airport, a group of 13 individuals successfully left the country over the weekend, marking a critical lifeline for stranded foreigners, according to NBC News.

Mills took to social media to announce the successful evacuation, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “Our team successfully conducted another rescue of 13 Americans out of PAP Haiti,” Mills stated, shedding light on the collaborative efforts to ensure the safety of citizens amidst the unrest.

Among those evacuated was Miriam Cinotti, a missionary with 14 years of experience in Haiti. Stranded in a remote village in the south of Haiti, Cinotti recounted the challenges of their ordeal. “We were safe, but then we couldn’t get out. We were there for three weeks, only supposed to be there for two,” she revealed, underscoring the critical nature of their rescue.

Navigating the logistics of evacuating from a remote location proved daunting, with limited access to essential resources such as internet and printing facilities. Cinotti credited Project Dynamo, an organization specializing in evacuation operations, for their instrumental role in facilitating their rescue.

The deteriorating security situation in Haiti, compounded by recent incidents of gang violence, has heightened apprehensions about the safety of foreigners in the country. The shutdown of the airport in Port-au-Prince has further complicated evacuation efforts, necessitating swift and coordinated responses.

Earlier this month, Mills played a pivotal role in the rescue of 10 individuals from the Have Faith Orphanage, including bestselling author and journalist Mitch Albom. Albom expressed gratitude to Mills and Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., for their assistance in facilitating their safe return to American soil.

Despite the challenges and uncertainties, the State Department has continued its efforts to repatriate American citizens from Haiti. A chartered flight repatriated more than 30 individuals back to the U.S., underscoring the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Americans abroad.

In response to the escalating tensions, a contingent of U.S. Marines was deployed to Port-au-Prince to safeguard the U.S. Embassy, signaling a proactive measure to maintain diplomatic presence amidst the crisis.

Amidst the chaos, Cinotti remains resolute in her commitment to Haiti, urging continued support for the country’s recovery efforts. “The people in Haiti still need the love; they need your funds to missions,” she emphasized, highlighting the enduring solidarity with the Haitian people amidst adversity.

5 Concrete Ways To Recover From A Foul Up At Work

So, you made a mistake on the job. Haven't we all? It is not the end of the world. Here's how to deal and recover from a major workplace error.

Originally Published Dec. 15, 2016.

So, you made a mistake on the job. Haven’t we all? It is not the end of the world. When mistakes are made or plans fail, it is how you recover that drives the outcome.

As a learning and development consultant, I regularly share tips and tools for professional success with my clients, and this is a topic that comes up often. How can one recover from a major error in the workplace?

Well, it’s simple. We can recover, no matter the size of the slip-up. Below are my five sure-fire tips to get you on the road to recovery:

Own it

Never hide behind a mistake. Instead, always get in front of it. Accountability is always key. Taking responsibility might be painful and uncomfortable at first, but you will increase your respect factor ten-fold, by simply being honest. People may discover that, in the face of a challenging situation, you are honest, reliable, and dedicated to the cause. Nobody is perfect, but try to avoid redirecting the blame to someone else. If it is your mistake, own the issue. Rather than comparing your blunder to those that other colleagues have made, just be available. Let people know that you are ready to take responsibility to work toward a resolution.

Learn from it

It’s more than just coming up with a solution for this mistake; it is about learning from it and creating strategies to prevent the mistake from occurring again. Key employees don’t simply react — they respond proactively. If all you ever do is react, someone can replace you. Even a mistake creates an opportunity to learn and demonstrate that newfound knowledge by creating and recommending solutions.

Communicate intentionally and strategically

Think about politicians or celebrities in the face of scandal. Many face the public with a skillfully crafted acknowledgment of wrongdoing, coupled with language that evokes human emotion. While I certainly do not have a public relations professional at my beck-and-call to address responses to my missteps, I believe in the power of sending the right message with my words and tone. So, this tip is simple: Be very intentional and careful with your words. You want to position yourself as trustworthy and dependable. If you respond to the error with a lie, empty promises, or insincere words, it will be two times as hard for you to recover and rebuild trust, when the truth is discovered.

Use your connections

So, you’re not a celebrity, and you don’t have a paid entourage that can get behind you and boost your confidence a bit. You are, however, a business professional with an extended network of power behind you. Sincerely communicate with your department, colleagues, and those within your network, who may be impacted by the error. Lean on your inner circle for support, and align yourself with people that others trust.

Get over it!

Let’s be 100% honest: every one of us has made mistakes. Once we have done what we feel is necessary to begin the recovery process, we have to forgive ourselves, and let it go. I have seen colleagues beat themselves up for weeks, months, and sometimes years over one mistake. What seems like a big deal today, may not seem as bad tomorrow. If it does seem as bad tomorrow, continue to work to rebuild the trust that may have been damaged as a result of the error. Never allow the error to consume you.

The recipe for recovery should always include accountability, effective communication, and action. Recovery is not always easy. It’s not always instant, but if managed appropriately, recovering from a mistake is an opportunity to learn, grow, and develop.

Experts Claim Bernie Sanders’ 4-Day Workweek Bill Can Cause Mental Health Issues

Experts caution against the idea of a four-day workweek championed by Sen. Bernie Sanders overlooking potential mental health drawbacks.

As the nation grapples with the idea of a four-day workweek championed by Sen. Bernie Sanders to Congress on March 13, experts caution against overlooking potential mental health drawbacks associated with such a policy shift, according to Daily Mail.

While the proposal may seem like a promising solution to alleviate stress and enhance productivity, scientists’ concerns underscore a more nuanced reality.

Abigail Marks, a Newcastle University Business School professor, highlighted overlooked complexities in the debate. “The truth is that there are problems with this attractive idea that tend to be ignored by the enthusiasts,” she remarked in her article for The Conversation.

Contrary to expectations, studies suggest that condensing work into fewer days may exacerbate employee stress and burnout. Research conducted at Auckland University in New Zealand revealed that employees face heightened stress levels as they struggle to fit their workload into a compressed time frame.

Moreover, according to the US Centers for Disease Control, reducing work days could decrease social interactions, a crucial aspect of workplace support linked to better mental health outcomes.

A Gallup poll further underscored the potential pitfalls, with respondents working a four-day week reporting higher levels of burnout and disengagement compared to their counterparts on a traditional schedule.

Experts also caution against the one-size-fits-all approach, advocating instead for flexibility tailored to individual needs. They argue that reducing workdays without addressing underlying workload intensity may exacerbate existing challenges.

While some have reported positive experiences with a condensed schedule, such as an anonymous employee from a craft brewery who found it helped to reduce stress, experts stress the need for more extensive research, particularly on the long-term effects of such arrangements.

Proposals for alternative approaches, such as adjusting the length of shifts, are gaining traction among researchers like Marks, who advocates for a six-hour workday as a potentially more effective solution for managing workloads.

Wayne Brady Addresses The ‘Biggest Misconception’ Of Being Pansexual

Wayne Brady is addressing the misconceptions about his pansexual identity and how "indecisive" people think he is about his sexuality.

Wayne Brady is addressing the misconceptions about his pansexual identity and how “indecisive” people think he is about his sexuality.

The Whose Line Is It Anyway? star attended the GLAAD Media Awards on Thursday, March 14, where he addressed the confusion around the term “pansexual,” and the “research” even he had to do to better understand the sexual identity.

“I had to do research and find out what it was that I was,” Brady told People. “I think the biggest misconception — and I even make a joke about it onstage tonight — is that people think that you’re an indecisive bisexual. It’s like, no, no, no, no, no. Let me set you straight.”

“What the definition basically boils down to is, regardless of gender, regardless,” he continued. “So that means that I am happily free to fall in love with anybody here. If you’re gay, if you’re straight, if you’re non-binary, trans, I don’t care.”

Brady, 51, explained how his attraction to someone is more about “the person, which in my mind is the ultimate in acceptance and loving — so I win.”

The Let’s Make A Deal host came out as pansexual in August 2023 and initially explained his sexuality as “Bisexual — with an open mind!” Brady shares his daughter Maile, 20, with his ex-wife Mandie Taketa and serves as a co-parent to a child she welcomed with her husband Jason Fordham in 2021.

The actor and television personality credits Robin Williams’ death in 2014 for sending him on a path of self-discovery where he asked himself “Wayne, um, are you gay?” In October 2023, Brady opened up about the depression and anxiety he’s battled over the years and how coming to terms with his sexuality “goes part and parcel with the mental health piece.”

“I look at it as being able to love whomever I want no matter the vessel,” Brady shared in his only televised interview about his sexuality. “I never spoke about it before because especially in my generation, you were raised to suffer in silence. Whatever your truth is. You should be able to feel like you walk in that daily because that’s the only way to really be free.”

Amanda Seales Claims Black Award Shows Don’t ‘Recognize’ Her, But Social Media Blames It On Her ‘Energy’

Amanda Seales is getting called out online after posting a video to complain about her lack of invites to Black award shows.

Amanda Seales is getting called out online after posting a video to complain about her lack of invites to Black award shows.

The “Insecure” actress took to Instagram on Sunday, March 17 to voice her frustration with not getting a seat at the table at recent award shows like the 55th NAACP Image Awards and ESSENCE Women in Hollywood. She even called out the BET Awards despite hosting the virtual award show in 2020.

“If it wasn’t for y’all, I would really think that I ain’t doing sh*t. Because the industry I’m in does not recognize me,” she explained in a clip captured by Noir Online.

“To be clear I’m speaking about the Black spaces in the industry I’m in…which is largely in part why I realized I need to shift out of this industry…I don’t get invited to Essence Women in Hollywood. I’ve NEVER been invited to the NAACP Image Awards. I’ve been nominated for an Image award, never been invited.”

Seales continued. “Never been honored at Black Girls Rock…I literally hosted the BET Awards in 2020 in my house and I was not invited to the BET Awards since,”

The outspoken comedian concluded her rant by thanking her followers for being the ones to remind her of how “valuable” she truly is since she doesn’t feel it from her peers in Hollywood.

“So I just want to thank y’all for always reminding me that I really am valuable because the game and the industry that I’ve been in has never let me know,” Seales said.

However, once the video tirade made its rounds on social media, many sounded off with their thoughts on why Seales might not be receiving any invites to the major award shows in Black Hollywood.

“Amanda Seales has a history of people not wanting her around. I used to hate that for her.. especially in the “Insecure” days. I always wanted to see more of her, but she has to work on her ENERGY,” one X user wrote. “It becomes telling when people don’t want to be around you.”

“Not being welcomed and being unbearable to be around so much that the black community thinks it’s best to keep you away from them are 2 different things,” added someone else.

One viewer even shared why they decided to unfollow Seales on Instagram after noticing how “every single day she was ranting or complaining about something. It’s exhausting.”

According to social media, Seales might want to do some soul-searching before she decides to criticize the industry for not rocking with her.

Naomi Osaka Advocates For ‘Life-Changing’ Maternity Pay On WTA Tour

Naomi Osaka is joining her former opponent Victoria Azarenka in calling on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) to introduce maternity pay.

Naomi Osaka is joining her former opponent Victoria Azarenka in calling on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) to introduce maternity pay.

The Japanese-born tennis champion, who is ranked No. 1 in singles by the WTA, is now calling on the organization to consider implementing maternity leave after giving birth to her daughter, Shai, last year.

“I think it would definitely be life-changing and I feel like having a kid shouldn’t feel like a punishment,” she told BBC.

“For most female athletes, I think there’s a discussion that your career’s going to change dramatically or going to finish because you have a kid, so just appreciating them more and giving more options is something that is very necessary.”

Osaka, who welcomed her daughter with rapper Cordae last July, had the pleasure of returning to the Grand Slam tour after the WTA changed the rules before the 2019 season. Following the rule change, new mothers can now use their previous ranking to enter 12 tournaments over a three-year period from the birth of their child.

The KINLO founder’s stance on maternity leave comes after former world No. 1 Azarenka, who welcomed her son, Leo, in 2016, called on the WTA to introduce maternity leave for its members. Osaka beat the Belarus native at the 2020 US Open, but the two have found common ground as tennis players and mothers.

“There’s a lot more that has to change and I hope that we are on the right track to do it,” Azarenka said in Brisbane earlier this year.

“I think the important part is to change the financial part of maternity leave. I think that would be a huge win for women in general, so I hope we find the resources to be able to do that. I think that would be incredible.”

While Azarenka has had financial success as a player, she’s advocating for maternity leave in hopes of helping other players without the same benefits who might welcome children.

“I have, I’m guessing, more financial security than some players who may be outside the top 100, and maybe have the same desires and ambitions to have a child and continue to do their job,” she said.

WTA Chairman Steve Simon hasn’t responded to the maternity leave requests but did write a letter revealing that “maternity coverage is a topic scheduled for review.”

University Of Michigan’s Sherrone Moore Releases Statement On Greg Scruggs’ Arrest

Recently hired defensive line coach Greg Scruggs was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated

The University of Michigan recently hired Greg Scruggs as defensive line coach. After Scruggs was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated on Saturday, March 18, Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore released a statement regarding the newly hired coach’s status with the university.

According to Sports Illustrated, the University of Michigan suspended Scruggs after his arrest, and Moore released a statement explaining why the coach had been suspended indefinitely.

“Greg made an unfortunate mistake and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated,” said Moore. “He made no excuses and has taken accountability for his actions. The football program and athletic department have suspended Greg indefinitely while we review details of the incident.”

The Detroit Free Press reported that Scruggs was arrested early Saturday morning in Ann Arbor, Michigan. If convicted, he faces up to three months in jail, a $500 fine, community service, or a driver’s license suspension.

The 33-year-old was hired on March 6 to take over the defensive line coach position, having just left his position as a defensive line coach at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 2022, he also had the same position in the NFL when he worked for the New York Jets. After his playing career ended, he began coaching with the University of Cincinnati in 2018.

Scruggs is a former NFL player who played 18 games for the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears during his four seasons in the league.

In 2011, Wave 3 reported that Scruggs was arrested and charged with driving under the influence while he was a student-athlete at the University of Louisville. A police report stated that Scruggs left the roadway on I-65 in Bullitt County and ran over a light pole. Police stated that he had red, glossy eyes and “smelled strongly of alcoholic beverages.” He did admit to going to a bar and having a few drinks. Scruggs failed a field sobriety test and blew a .117 on a breathalyzer test.
