OpEd: Sage Steele May Not Be A Sellout But She Is Problematic, Here’s Why

*** All opinions expressed is the writer’s own and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of BLACK ENTERPRISE.

Former ESPN anchor Sage Steele has not gone quietly into the night following her split from the sports network. Furthering her commitment to proving she was wronged due to her beliefs, Steele has been outspoken about what she believes has contributed to her being ostracized, largely, by the Black community.

According to NewsOne, Steele feels the biggest gripe being held against her is the choice she’s made to identify as biracial; rather than solely Black.

In an interview with former NBC News anchor and right-wing conservative Megyn Kelly, the 50-year-old sports journalist claims she’s been labeled a “sellout” for embracing her white ethnicity. Steele seems to have drawn false equivalence between her right to identify as she sees fit and the way in which she’s distanced herself from community support by spouting problematic views on key issues. Though her issues with ESPN may have started due to her critique of their COVID-19 vaccine policy; Steele’s reputation for being on the wrong side of history began long before.

In 2017, Steele made an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show where she chastised former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the National Anthem, expressing that she supported team owners for not wanting to hire him.

“I just disagree with the whole premise of the issue that people have”, Steele said at the time.

“Steve Bisciotti and the other 31 owners in this league, they run a business and they have a right to make the decision that is best for their business.”

Steele also publicly attacked her fellow Black ESPN peers, Michael Eaves and Elle Duncan, in a Wall Street Journal article claiming she’d been pushed out of a special called Time for Change: We Won’t Be Defeated, which would chronicle Black athletes who stood up to injustice.

Attempting to railroad other Black journalists has been a recurring issue for Steele who also gloated after Jemele Hill was suspended due to her criticism of former President Donald Trump.

That same year, Steele took to her Instagram to criticize anti-Trump protestors for delaying her flight, going as far as mentioning that they’d negatively impacted the immigrants they were marching in support of.

When her comments about former President Barack Obama’s decision to identify as Black despite his African father’s “absence” in his life hit the internet, it was yet another reminder that Steele has often chosen similar talking points as those who are blatantly racist and anti-Black.

When she aligned herself alongside men accused of sexual harassment in the workplace by placing the blame on the way women choose to dress, it showed she was unable—or unwilling—to be a constructive voice of support on social issues, as well.

Perhaps her position in the court of public opinion is not a matter of identity but a matter of a problematic person receiving the exact attention she’s ordered for years.

Biden Administration Advises Americans To Get Additional Boosters Against New Covid Strains

As Covid-19 cases continue to spread, the Biden administration has announced plans encouraging Americans to get additional booster shots against the virus, Reuters reports.

Though hospitals throughout the country have witnessed a steady increase in the number of cases, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has yet to declare a state of emergency as overall infections remain considerably low. Still, following the initial outbreak in late 2019, several variants of the virus have appeared over the years, producing the most recent strains – “Eris” and “Fornax.”

Large pharmaceutical companies such as Moderna (MRNA.0) and Pfizer (PFE.N) have been concocting a more effective approach to preventing infection, according to Reuters. Moderna recently shared data revealing that its new booster vaccine can protect against the aforementioned variants. Pfizer has also released a report, showcasing its new vaccine booster’s successful neutralizing agents against the virus in mice. Pfizer’s vaccine is co-developed with Germany-based biotechnology company, BioNTech. Alongside Moderna and Pfizer, BioNTech is one of the leading companies dominating the current Covid-19 market share, according to Fierce Pharma. Each company have persistently worked to find a solution against the coronavirus’s many forms. Now President Biden’s administration has expressed hope that Americans will welcome the further protection.

An official representative for the White House spoke to Reuters about the upcoming plans, saying “We will be encouraging all Americans to get those boosters in addition to flu shots and RSV [Respiratory Syncytial Virus] shots.”

In wake of the deadly pandemic, the Biden Administration enacted a four-step preparedness plan to combat the virus and minimize its harm on American citizens. The plan, which includes widespread immunization and preventing economic and educational shutdowns, has been in the works for years now.

As health professionals await pending approval of the new booster, citizens throughout the United States and Europe are gearing up for a new round of immunization against the threat.

Lawsuit Claiming Apple Watch Sensor Exhibits ‘Racial Bias’ is Dismissed

Apple on Monday won the dismissal of a lawsuit claiming that the blood oxygen sensor on its Apple Watch exhibits “racial bias” against people with darker skin tones.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan dismissed the proposed class action with prejudice, meaning it cannot be brought again. He plans to explain his reasons by Aug. 31.

The plaintiff Alex Morales, a resident of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, said he paid an inflated price for his Apple Watch based on his mistaken belief that its blood oxygen app would measure blood oxygen levels “without regard to skin tone.”

His amended complaint, filed in May, cited decades of reports that similar pulse oximetry devices were “significantly less accurate” when measuring blood oxygen levels of nonwhite people.

Morales said the real-world impact of this bias was not addressed until the COVID-19 pandemic led to “greater awareness of structural racism” in society.

Apple said Morales failed to make any allegations supporting his fraud claim, or show that it exposed him to anything misleading before his purchase.

Morales’ lawyer did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Doctors have long known that pulse oximeters, which help assess potential heart and respiratory problems, are less accurate in estimating blood oxygen of non-white patients.

The pandemic exposed some of the devices’ shortcomings, with some patients facing treatment delays or being discharged from emergency rooms too soon.

The case is Morales v Apple Inc, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 22-10872.

Remy Ma Reminisces Regret For The Purchase She Made After Her First Major Check

Have you ever felt pressured to buy something when you really don’t want to?

That’s what happened to Terror Squad rapper Remy Ma, and now she’s sharing her experience. In an interview with Footwear News, the shoe addict reminisces about what happened after getting her first big check. She recalls shopping with fellow rapper Fat Joe’s wife, Lorena Cartagena, at a Manhattan-based luxury shoe store, Petit Peton.

Cartagena put peer pressure to the test for Remy, whose real name is Reminisce Kioni Mackie, to purchase a pair of $1,500 shoes. With her Bronx, New York, upbringing, Remy remembers being hesitant. “They had purple ostrich thigh-high boots. She was like, ‘Rem, you’ve got to try them on; they’re crazy,” Remy remembers. “I flipped the shoe, looked at the price, and I’m like, ‘There has to be a decimal missing or something.’ I’d never seen a shoe cost that much in my life.”

The pressure worked as Remy left the luxury shoe store with the shoes —and a matching bag.

Now, as her career continues to skyrocket, the mom and wife realizes that her love for fashion has grown to new heights as well as some of the price tags. While she has an eye for fashion, Remy admits it’s not at the top of her priority list. “Sometimes I wish I had more of a relationship with brands so I could stop spending so much money, and they could send it to me for free,” Remy said. “I don’t get the fashion-forward credit. There are certain artists where that’s what they’re known for, but I don’t feel any type of way.”

While her shoe collection, ranging from Timberlands to Bottega Veneta thigh-high boots, is impressive how different financial challenges inspired her to adopt healthy shopping habits. Most of her purchases now are geared toward getting items she couldn’t afford growing up in the Castle Hill projects. “A lot of times, my purchases are influenced by the purchases I couldn’t make as a kid,” Remy said, according to AfroTech. “Throwbacks of certain sneakers, I’m like, ‘I’ve got to get them. For tenth grade me, I’ve got to do it.’”

50 Cent Claims BET ‘Wasn’t Worth $3B’

Paramount Global recently announced the sale of BET won’t happen. Many Black suitors were pursuing the purchase of Black Entertainment Television to return it to Black ownership. They included Tyler Perry, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Shaquille O’Neal, and Byron Allen, among others.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson was part of the ownership group that included Shaq and Kenya Barris. Sadly, no deal was struck.

50 Cent took to social media to share the news with his followers, “We will get them next time, @shaq 🤷🏽‍♂️that shit wasn’t worth 3,000,000,000. #bransoncognac #lecheminduroi

HipHopDx reported that the parent company of BET, Paramount, announced on Aug. 16 that it wouldn’t be selling the network.

“We made this decision because the benefits of maintaining a majority stake in BET Media Group creates more value for Paramount than any of the proposals we received,” a source close to Paramount said.

50 Cent has nothing to worry about, as his slate of television shows is presently doing well. Specifically, the Power series is currently airing on Starz. Earlier this year, in February, the “In Da Club” rapper signed a non-exclusive broadcast direct deal with Fox to develop scripted dramas, live-action comedies, and animated series through his production company, G-Unit Film & Television, Variety reported.

This summer, the prominent television producer and hip-hop entrepreneur signed his first multiyear partnership with an NHL team. Jackson agreed to bring his Sire Spirits to the Vegas Golden Knights. Jackson already has partnership deals with NBA teams, the Houston Rockets and the Minnesota Timberwolves, for his liquor products. He also has one with an NFL team, the Houston Texans.

With a start in hip-hop, the rapper has returned to his first love and is on the road for “The Final Lap Tour.”

The tour is slated to end on Sept. 22 in Toronto. From there, he will go overseas starting Sept. 28 in Amsterdam, with the final show taking place n New Zealand on Dec. 14.

Dealer Who Sold Fentanyl-Laced Heroin That Killed Michael K. Williams Sentenced To 10 Years In Prison

The man accused of selling the fentanyl-laced heroin that factored in the death of The Wire actor Michael K. Williams has been sentenced.

According to the Department of Justice, Irvin Cartagena was handed his fate on Aug. 18 to serve 10 years in prison. Once he is released, he will have supervised probation for five years. The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, said Cartagena, also known as “Green Eyes,” was sentenced for conspiring to distribute heroin, fentanyl, and fentanyl analogue. He initially pled guilty earlier this year on April 5.

Williams died nearly two years ago, on Sept. 6, 2021, after ingesting the fentanyl-laced heroin. He was found dead in his apartment by his nephew.

In a written statement, United States Attorney Williams said: “On September 5, 2021, Irvin Cartagena sold Michael K. Williams a fatal dose of heroin laced with fentanyl and a fentanyl analogue. Michael K. Williams tragically lost his life after using the drugs Cartagena sold him. Although their product had already claimed one life, Cartagena and his co-conspirators continued to sell potentially lethal fentanyl-laced heroin. This Office will tenaciously continue our enforcement efforts against unscrupulous drug dealers who distribute poison and exacerbate the scourge of the fentanyl epidemic.”

Williams was a well-received actor who was revered for the various roles he played during his career.

The venerable actor had a breadth of work that has received critical acclaim. Before the beloved actor passed away, he received a 2021 Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actor in HBO’s Lovecraft Country and a 2019 Emmy nod for When They See Us, where he played the father of Antron McCrayone of the Exonerated Five, who was coerced into signing a false confession. He is probably most famously known for playing the notorious Omar Little, the rogue stickup robber of drug dealers in the hit HBO series “The Wire.”

The Platform Formerly Known as Twitter Removes Images Between 2011-2014

There’s something off about the X, formerly known as Twitter, content posted in the early 2000s.

On Saturday, technologist and X platform user Tom Coates revealed some interesting information about the Twitter platform, which has been renamed X. Coates alleges that photos on then-Twitter posted between 2011 and 2014 have been removed from the server. “Thats—so far—almost a decade of pictures and videos from the early 2000s removed from the service,” Coates wrote with an example of his discovery.

“This is what Twitter pre-2014 looks like—every image and video removed and replaced with a dead link. Epic vandalism by Musk. Another cost-saving exercise presumably—and one which 100% should make you trust his statements Twitter is just about to make money,” Coates wrote.

According to The Verge, an image of Ellen’s famous ‘most retweeted’ selfie from the 2014 Oscars was restored on Saturday afternoon. The error message has prompted speculation that the platform may be experiencing a bug of some kind.

Another discovery included an old tweet still visible from President Barack Obama’s account that was posted in 2012 after the reelection. The image shows the former U.S. president embracing his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, with a tight hug, after winning his 2012 campaign for reelection. As previously reported by BLACK ENTERPRISE, Obama’s victory post became the most retweeted tweet in Twitter history in 2012.

Reportedly, the errors could possibly be linked to the updates to the platform made in 2016 that added “enhanced URL enrichment.” The previous changes introduced” ‘native attachments’ where a trailing shared link is not counted against the 140 Tweet character limit.”

“In March 2012, the expanded URL enrichment was introduced. Before this time, the Tweet payloads included only the URL provided by the user. So, if the user included a shortened URL, it can be challenging to match on (expanded) URLs of interest,” as stated by the X Developer Platform Data Dictionary.
